RESUMO

Genetic variations in the ovine ovulation rate, which are associated with the FecB mutation, provide useful models by which to explore the mechanisms regulating the development of mammalian antral follicles. In order to study the effects of the FecB mutation on cumulus cell differentiation, preovulatory follicles were aspirated and cumulus cells were isolated from three FecB genotypes (homozygous, heterozygous and wild type) of Small Tail Han (STH) sheep superstimulated with FSH. Transcriptome information from tens of thousands of cumulus cells was determined with the 10 × Genomics single-cell RNA-seq technology. Under the superovulation treatment, the observed number of preovulatory follicles in the ovaries of FecB carriers was still significantly higher than that in the wild-type (P < 0.05). The expression patterns of cumulus cells differed between FecB carriers and wild-type ewes. The screened cumulus cells could also be further divided into different cell clusters, and the differentiation states and fates of each group of cumulus cells also remained different, which supports the notion that heterogeneity in gene expression is prevalent in single cells. The oxidative phosphorylation pathway was significantly enriched in differentially expressed genes among the cell differentiation branch nodes of cumulus cells and among the differentially expressed genes of cumulus cells from the three genotypes. Combined with the important role of oxidative phosphorylation in the maturation of COCs, we suggest that the oxidative phosphorylation pathway of cumulus cells plays a crucial role in the differentiation process of cumulus cells and the mutation effect of the FecB gene.

Background: Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) can regulate the synthesis of 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and melatonin (MT). In a previous metabolome analysis, we found that 5-HTP is an effective ingredient in yeast culture for regulating rumen fermentation. However, research on the effect of this microbial product (5-HTP) as a functional feed additive in sheep production is still not well explained. Therefore, this study examined the effects of 5-HTP on sheep rumen function and growth performance using in vitro and in vivo models. Methods: A two-factor in vitro experiment involving different 5-HTP doses and fermentation times was conducted. Then, in the in vivo experiment, 10 sheep were divided into a control group which was fed a basal diet, and a 5-HTP group supplemented with 8 mg/kg 5-HTP for 60 days. Results: The results showed that 5-HTP supplementation had a significant effect on in vitro DMD, pH, NH3-N, acetic acid, propionic acid, and TVFA concentrations. 5-HTP altered rumen bacteria composition and diversity indices including Chao1, Shannon, and Simpson. Moreover, the in vivo study on sheep confirmed that supplementing with 8 mg/kg of 5-HTP improved rumen fermentation efficiency and microbial composition. This led to enhanced sheep growth performance and increased involvement in the tryptophan metabolic pathway, suggesting potential benefits. Conclusion: Dietary 5-HTP (8 mg/kg DM) improves sheep growth performance by enhancing ruminal functions, antioxidant capacity, and tryptophan metabolism. This study can provide a foundation for the development of 5-HTP as a functional feed additive in ruminants' production.

The preservation or removal of apical meristem in Leymus chinensis is contingent upon grazing intensity and has a significant impact on above- and belowground biomass, nutritive value, and sustainability of L. chinensis grassland. However, this topic remains understudied. Therefore, a manipulative trial was conducted to induce grazing defoliation through mowing, where two post-grazing heights (preservation or removal of the apical meristem) and four pre-grazing plant heights (i.e., 18, 24, 31, and 35 cm) are combined factorially to create gradients of grazing intensities, resulting in a total of eight treatments. Additionally, two identical control treatments are also incorporated. Our results showed that apical meristem removal at various pre-grazing heights resulted in varying degrees of increased grazing intensities, thereby enhancing the nutritive value of L. chinensis. However, this practice also led to detrimental effects on the plant's carbohydrates reserve as well as herbage mass. The results indicated that although defoliation in treatments involving apical meristem removal resulted in the highest number of frequent cuttings, it did not confer any advantages in terms of herbage mass and nutrient preserves, except for herbage nutritive values when compared to treatments involving apical meristem preservation. The apical meristem preservation treatments demonstrated the highest CP yield over a 2-year period compared to the apical meristem removal treatments. Furthermore, within these apical meristem preservation treatments, only when the pre-grazing height is 35 cm and post-grazing height is 17 cm, there is no significant decrease in above- and belowground biomass. This establishes this specific defoliation regime as an optimal and effective management strategy for L. chinensis grassland.

The quality of meat can differ between grazing and feedlot yaks. The present study examined whether spectral fingerprints by visible and near-infrared (Vis-NIR) spectroscopy and chemo-metrics could be employed to identify the meat of grazing and feedlot yaks. Thirty-six 3.5-year-old castrated male yaks (164 ± 8.38 kg) were divided into grazing and feedlot yaks. After 5 months on treatment, liveweight, carcass weight, and dressing percentage were greater in the feedlot than in grazing yaks. The grazing yaks had greater protein content but lesser fat content than feedlot yaks. Principal component analysis (PCA) was able to identify the meat of the two groups to a great extent. Using either partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) or the soft independent modeling of class analogies (SIMCA) classification, the meat could be differentiated between the groups. Both the original and processed spectral data had a high discrimination percentage, especially the PLS-DA classification algorithm, with 100% discrimination in the 400-2500 nm band. The spectral preprocessing methods can improve the discrimination percentage, especially for the SIMCA classification. It was concluded that the method can be employed to identify meat from grazing or feedlot yaks. The unerring consistency across different wavelengths and data treatments highlights the model's robustness and the potential use of NIR spectroscopy combined with chemometric techniques for meat classification. PLS-DA's accurate classification model is crucial for the unique evaluation of yak meat in the meat industry, ensuring product traceability and meeting consumer expectations for the authenticity and quality of yak meat raised in different ways.

Microplastics (MPs), recognized as an emerging environmental menace, have been extensively investigated in both marine and terrestrial fauna. This study is comprehensive to investigate how polystyrene (PS) affects ruminant animals. The experimental design comprised 24 individually housed lambs, divided into a CON group (diet without PS) and three PS-exposed (25 µm, 50 µm, 100 µm) groups, each with six lambs, the exposure of PS was 100 mg/day, and the duration of exposure was 60 days. The study yielded noteworthy results: (ⅰ) PS leads to a decrease in average daily gain along with an increase in feed conversion rate. (ⅱ) PS decreases rumen ammonia nitrogen. The rumen microbiota diversity remains consistent. However, the relative abundance of Bacteroidetes and Actinobacteria increased in the PS-exposed groups, while the relative abundance of Coriobacteriales_incertae_Sedis and Prevotellaceae_YAB2003_group decreased. (ⅲ) PS leads to decrease in hemoglobin, thrombocytocrit, and albumin levels in lamb blood, thus triggering oxidative stress accumulation, along with swelling of the kidneys and liver. (ⅳ) PS inflicts severe damage to jejunum, consequently impacting digestion and absorption. (ⅴ) PS reduces meat quality and the nutritional value. In conclusion, PS-exposure inhibited lambs' digestive function, adversely affects blood and organs' health status, reducing average daily gain and negatively influencing meat quality. PS particles of 50-100 µm bring worse damage to lambs. This research aims to fill the knowledge void concerning MPs' influences on ruminant animals, with a specific focus on the meat quality of fattening lambs.

FecB (also known as BMPR1B) is a crucial gene in sheep reproduction, which has a mutation (A746G) that was found to increase the ovulation rate and litter size. The FecB mutation is associated with reproductive endocrinology, such mutation can control external estrous characteristics and affect follicle-stimulating hormone during the estrous cycle. Previous researches showed that the FecB mutation can regulate the transcriptomic profiles in the reproductive-related tissues including hypothalamus, pituitary, and ovary during the estrous cycle of small-tailed Han (STH) sheep. However, little research has been reported on the correlation between FecB mutation and the estrous cycle in STH sheep oviduct. To investigate the coding and noncoding transcriptomic profiles involved in the estrous cycle and FecB in the sheep oviduct, RNA sequencing was performed to analyze the transcriptomic profiles of mRNAs and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the oviduct during the estrous cycle of STH sheep with mutant (FecBBB) and wild-type (FecB++) genotypes. In total, 21,863 lncRNAs and 43,674 mRNAs were screened, the results showed that mRNAs had significantly higher expression levels than the lncRNAs, and the expression levels of these screened transcripts were lower in the follicular phase than they were in the luteal phase. Among them, the oviductal glycoprotein gene (OVGP1) had the highest expression level. In the comparison between the follicular and luteal phases, 57 differentially expressed (DE) lncRNAs and 637 DE mRNAs were detected, including FSTL5 mRNA and LNC_016628 lncRNA. In the comparison between the FecBBB and FecB++ genotypes, 26 DE lncRNAs and 421 DE mRNAs were detected, including EEF1D mRNA and LNC_006270 lncRNA. Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes functional enrichment analysis indicated that the DE mRNAs were enriched mainly in terms related to reproduction such as the tight junction, SAGA complex, ATP-binding cassette, nestin, and Hippo signaling pathway. The interaction network between DE lncRNAs and DE mRNAs indicated that LNC_018420 may be the key regulator in sheep oviduct. Together, our results can provide novel insights into the oviductal transcriptomic function against a FecB mutation background in sheep reproduction.

Our objective was to determine effects of feeding lamb's peony byproducts, including stem and leaves (PSL), root (PR), and seeds meal (PSM), on growth, rumen fermentation, slaughter parameters, and meat quality. Sixty-four lambs (14.0 ± 2.1 kg) were allocated into eight treatments based on BW: no additives (CON), 0.15% aureomycin (CONA), low/high levels of PSL (5%/10% PSL replaced 5%/10% Chinese hay), PR (basal diet with 0.5%/1.0% PR), PSM (5%/10% PSM replaced 5%/10% soybean meal). Growth, digestibility, and rumen fermentation had dose responses whereas slaughter parameters, meat quality, or amino acids indexes were not. Peony byproducts increased DMI (p < 0.001) compared to CON, but higher levels were more advantageous (p = 0.003). However, low levels of peony byproducts decreased the NH3 -N concentration, but increased total volatile fatty acids mole percent more than high levels of that (p < 0.001). All peony byproducts increased dressing percentage (p < 0.05), increased pH and tenderness than CON (p < 0.05). In addition, PSL and PSM improved amino acid profiles of meat compared to CON, and were even better than CONA (p < 0.05). Therefore, peony byproducts not only improved animal growth but also reduced the frequency of antibiotic use in animal feeding.

RESUMO

Cold-adapted enzymes, produced in cold-adapted organisms, are a class of enzyme with catalytic activity at low temperatures, high temperature sensitivity, and the ability to adapt to cold stimulation. These enzymes are largely derived from animals, plants, and microorganisms in polar areas, mountains, and the deep sea. With the rapid development of modern biotechnology, cold-adapted enzymes have been implemented in human and other animal food production, the protection and restoration of environments, and fundamental biological research, among other areas. Cold-adapted enzymes derived from microorganisms have attracted much attention because of their short production cycles, high yield, and simple separation and purification, compared with cold-adapted enzymes derived from plants and animals. In this review we discuss various types of cold-adapted enzyme from cold-adapted microorganisms, along with associated applications, catalytic mechanisms, and molecular modification methods, to establish foundation for the theoretical research and application of cold-adapted enzymes.

Infection with the nematode Haemonchus contortus causes host malnutrition and gastrointestinal injuries. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of H. contortus infection on gastrointestinal contents of free amino acids (AA), the expression of AA transporters and microbiota with a focus on amino acid metabolism. Twenty-four Xiangdong black goats (13 ± 1.5 kg, 6 months old) were randomly assigned into the control group (n = 8) and the infected group (n = 16). The results showed that H. contortus infection increased (P < 0.05) the free AA contents in jejunum and ileum digesta. The concentrations of blood threonine, phenylalanine and tyrosine were lower (P < 0.05) in the infected group as compared to the control group. In the jejunum and ileum epithelium, H. contortus infection significantly (P < 0.05) down-regulated the expression of AA transporter b0,+AT/rBAT and B0AT1, but up-regulated (P < 0.05) the expression of transporter CAT2 and xCT. Furthermore, microbiota in both jejunum (Bifidobacteriaceae, Lachnospiraceae, Bacteroidaceae, Enterobacteriaceae, and Micrococcaceae) and ileum (Acidaminococcaceae, Desulfovibrionaceae, Bacteroidaceae, and Peptostreptococcaceae) were also altered at the family level by H. contortus infection. The  commensal bacteria of jejunum showed a close correlation with amino acids, AA transporters, and amino acid metabolism, especially cystine. In conclusion, H. contortus infection affected the intestinal AA contents and the expression of intestinal AA transporters, suggesting altered AA metabolism and absorption, which were accompanied by changes in the relative abundances of gut bacteria that mediate amino acid metabolism.

Microplastics (MPs) pollution may be harmful to terrestrial ecosystems and is receiving increasing attention. A microcosm study on the uptake of MPs in maize (Zea mays) seedling roots exposed to small polystyrene (PS) beads (0.2, 0.5 and 1.0 µm) and large PS beads (2.0 and 5.0 µm) at 50 mg L-1 for 7 d was performed. Additionally, the absorption ability of different parts of the roots was also investigated after 10 d of exposure with 0.2 µm PS beads. The results showed that root and shoot biomass remained unchanged under different particle sizes of PS beads. The small PS beads markedly increased the accumulation and distribution of PS beads in roots more than large ones. Confocal laser scanning micrographs confirmed that strong fluorescence signals from small PS beads (0.2 µm) were seen in all tissues, as compared with the control. Large PS beads (2.0 µm) were mainly distributed in the xylem, and no PS beads were detected in any root tissues when treated with 5.0 µm PS beads. More PS beads were absorbed by the root maturation zone than by the root tip zone. Fluorescence intensity values of PS bead accumulations measured across the tissues further confirmed these results. As seen in scanning electron microscopy images, small PS beads assembled on the cell wall of the xylem, while large PS beads (2.0 µm) were scattered on the cell walls of root xylem. The present study revealed the effects of different PS bead sizes on accumulation and distribution in maize roots, as well as the absorption ability of different positions of the roots. Moreover, fluorescence intensity could be a useful method to evaluate the uptake and distribution of MPs accurately.

Increasing production of synthetic plastics and poor management of plastic wastes have dramatically increased the amount of plastics in the environment. In 2014, at the first United Nations Environment Assembly, marine plastic waste pollution was listed as one of the 10 most pressing environmental issues. In addition, there is much plastic waste in terrestrial ecosystems due to substantial residues from agricultural mulching and packing. As a recently recognized pollutant, microplastics (MPs) have attracted significant attention from the public and various governments. Concentrations of MPs in the environment vary among locations, from <100 to >1 × 106 particles per cubic meter. Many studies have addressed the impacts and potential mechanisms of MPs on the environment and organisms. Humans and other organisms can ingest or carry MPs in a variety of passive ways and these MPs can have a range of negative effects on metabolism, function, and health. Additionally, given their large surface area, MPs can sorb various pollutants, including heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants, with serious implications for animals and human wellbeing. However, due to their complexity and a lack of accurate determination methods, the systematic impacts of MP pollution on whole foodwebs are not clearly established. Therefore, this review summarizes current research advances in MP pollution, particularly the impact of MPs on soils, plants, and animals, and proposes potential future research prospects to better characterize MPs.

Simulated cattle manure deposition was used to estimate nutrient transfer to soil and oats and to investigate changes in microbial community composition and functional groups in oat rhizospheres. Nutrient absorption and return efficiency were calculated as a series of standard calculation formulas, and total nutrient transfer efficiency was nutrient absorption efficiency plus nutrient return efficiency. In total, 74.83% of nitrogen (N) and 59.30% of phosphorus (P) in cattle manure were transferred to soil and oats, with 11.79% of N and 7.89% of P in cattle manure absorbed by oats, and the remainder sequestered in the soil for 80 days after sowing. Cattle manure increased oat root length, surface, and volume under 0.2 mm diameter, and improved relative abundance of the microbiome known to be beneficial. In response to cattle manure, several bacteria known to be beneficial, such as Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, and Firmicutes at phyla the level and Pseudoxanthomonas, Pseudomonas, and Sphingomonas at the genus level, were positively related to oat biomass and nutrient accumulation. For fungal communities, the relative abundance of Ascomycota is the predominant phylum, which varied in a larger range in the control treatment (81.0-63.3%) than the cattle manure deposition treatment (37.0-42.9%) as plant growing days extend. The relevant abundance of Basidiomycota known as decomposer was higher in cattle manure deposition treatment compared to that in control treatment at 15 days after sowing. More importantly, cattle manure deposition inhibited trophic mode within pathotroph like Alternaria and Fusarium fungal genus and promoted saprotroph and symbiotroph.

Although crop-livestock integration recycling systems improve nitrogen (N) utilization in agroecosystems, there are limited studies regarding impacts of residual antibiotics in livestock manure on N transformation in entire recycling system. The objective was to evaluate effects of feeding monensin on N recycling during "straw feeding-substrate fermentation-mushroom cultivation". This experiment contained 3 steps. During straw feeding, beef cattle were allocated into 2 groups and fed diets with or without monensin, respectively. During fermentation, beef cattle manure (with or without monensin) and straw (corn or wheat) and were co-fermented for 35 d to produce substrates. During cultivation, Agaricus bisporus was cultivated on 4 substrates to recycle N in the form of mushrooms. Rates of N retention during fermentation were significant higher for monensin and corn straw treatments and there was an significant interaction between straw and antibiotic on N retention rate during cultivation. However, residual monensin significantly reduced amount of recycled N during entire recycling system, due to changes in N transformation-associated enzyme activity, ammonification and denitrification plus microbial community structure and succession. Specifically, residual monensin inhibited growth of dominant bacterial phylum Bacteroidetes and fungal phylum Neocallimastigomycota, and increased bacterial phylla Actinobacteriota and Firmicutes. These alterations in functional microbes increased N retention rates but reduced mushroom yields in antibiotic treatments during cultivation. In conclusion, monensin decreased the N recycling rate in recycling system, but also reduced N losses during fermentation by inhibiting ammonification and denitrification, so, avoiding antibiotics usage is an effective strategy to improve the efficiency of recycling systems.

Composting is suitable for recycling livestock manure into valuable organic fertilizer, which can improve soil quality while mitigating potential risk of heavy metal pollution. Humic substances (HS) in compost have been demonstrated to play a key role in regulating the redistribution of heavy metal fractions. However, limited direct information have been reported on how different components of HS complexes with heavy metals to affect their bioavailability during composting. In this study, sequential extraction procedures (H2O, KCl, Na4P2O7, NaOH and HNO3) were used to assess the characteristics that HS bound with Cu and Zn during composting of swine manure and straw added either 5% boron waste (BW) or 5% phosphate rock (PR). Organically complexed fraction extracted by Na4P2O7 contained only 33-41% of the Cu but most of the Zn (81-87%). During composting, initially mobile fractions of Cu and Zn (extracted by H2O or KCl) changed into more stable fractions (extracted by NaOH and HNO3), and both organic matter and fulvic acids (FA) were identified as critical factors to explain this redistribution based on redundancy analysis. Over 80% of Cu and Zn were complexed with FA of HS. However, exogenous additives (phosphate rock and boron waste) enhanced Cu conversion by promoting humification (Humic acid/Fulvic acids, HA/FA) whereas they had limited influence on Zn, due to the relatively weak binding relationship between Zn and HA.

Theoretical interpretation of IR spectra relies on ab initio calculations may be very costly in computational resources. Herein, we developed a neural network (NN) modeling protocol to evaluate a model dipeptide's backbone amide-I spectra. DFT calculations were performed for the amide-I vibrational motions and structural parameters of alanine dipeptide (ALAD) conformers in different micro-environments ranging from polar to non-polar ones. The obtained backbone dihedrals, C = O bond lengths and amide-I frequencies of ALAD were gather together for NN architecture. The applications of built NN protocols for the prediction of amide-I frequencies of ALAD in other solvation conditions are quite satisfactory with much less computational cost comparing with electronic structure calculations. The results show that this cost-effective way enables us to decipher the polypeptide's dynamic secondary structures and biological functions with their backbone vibrational probes.

Alfalfa silage is one of the main roughages in the production of dairy cow, which can provide nutrition with high quality to improve milk quality and production. Sucrose additions have been widely used to improve the silage quality. In this study, the effects of sucrose on the fermentation quality and bacterial communities of alfalfa silage were investigated here using 0, 0.5, and 1% sucrose ensiling treatments for 15, 30, and 60 days. The ensiling time significantly decreased the crude fiber content and increased the ammonia nitrogen, acetic acid content, and the relative abundance of Enterococcus in the silages. The 1% sucrose-treated silage at 60 days had the lowest neutral detergent fiber acid, acid detergent fiber, and crude fiber content and the highest relative feed value. Moreover, sucrose-treated silage contained less acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid, and had a lower pH than the controls for each duration. Enterobacteriaceae, Klebsiella, and Enterococcus were the dominant genera in all groups, and the relative abundance of Enterococcus and Lactobacillus was higher in the 1% sucrose-treated group than in the control. These results suggested that sucrose supplementation could improve alfalfa silage quality and increase its beneficial bacterial content.

Grazing Swan geese (Anser cygnoides) have good meat quality but grow slowly. This study aimed to study whether supplemental feeding could improve growth performance of grazing Swan geese and investigate a suitable dietary metabolizable energy (ME) level of supplemental diet for grazing Swan geese. Naturalized healthy male Swan geese (n = 144; 42 ± 2.0 days and 1.21 ± 0.17 kg) were randomly allocated into 4 groups and grazed on pasture alone (control, CON) or offered supplemental diets with ME of 9.5, 11.5, or 13.5 MJ/kg of DM after grazing. Growth performance and body-size measurements (including bone development) were lower (p < 0.05) in CON versus supplemented geese, as well as slaughter measurements on days 28 and 56. The DM intake linearly decreased (p < 0.01) with increasing dietary ME from day 29 to 56. Slaughter, semi-eviscerated, eviscerated, and thigh muscle yield linearly (p < 0.01) decreased with increasing dietary ME on day 56. Lightness (L*) and yellowness (b*) for breast and thigh muscle on days 28 and 56, and breast muscle shear force on day 56, were lower (p < 0.01) in supplemented versus CON geese. In conclusion, supplemental feeding improved growth performance and carcass characteristics of grazing Swan geese, and supplemental feed with ME of 9.5 MJ/kg of DM could be offered to improve growth and meat quality of grazing Swan geese.

The bioavailability of heavy metals in compost is critical for their agronomic value. The effect of inorganic additives (rock phosphate, PR and boron waste, BW) on Copper (Cu) and Zinc (Zn) bioavailability during co-compost of swine manure and rice straw was assessed using sequential extraction procedure (European Community Bureau of Reference). The result showed that both additives, applied at rates of 2.5%-7.5% (w/w) could promote the change of exchangeable Cu and reducible Cu into oxidizable Cu, thereby reducing their bioavailability factor (BF) by 15.5%-47.2%. While additives provided no significant reduction in BF of Zn, the shift from exchangeable Zn into reducible Zn can still reduce the mobility of Zn. Based on redundancy analysis (RDA), organic matter (OM) and electrical conductivity (EC) were identified as the most important controlling factors for redistribution of Cu and Zn fractions during composting. The inorganic additives strengthened the passivation of Cu and Zn bioavailability by stimulating OM degradation. The 7.5% (w/w) rock phosphate showed best passivating effect on the bioavailability of Cu.

Chlorotetracycline (CTC) is one of the most antibiotics present in cattle manure. In present study, three levels of CTC (0, 20 and 40 mg kg-1) were added to cattle manure composting systems to investigate its effects on the distribution of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) and succession of bacterial community. Adding CTC hindered the removal of ARGs during composting; the high level of CTC significantly increased the relative abundance (RA) of 9/11 ARGs and four MGEs. The bacterial community could be clustered according to the composting time under various treatments, with the high level of CTC having a more persistent effect on the bacterial community. Based on redundancy analysis, bacterial community explained the most variation in ARGs (50.1%), whereas based on network analysis, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria were the main hosts for ARGs. In conclusion, the presence of CTC increased the risks of spreading ARGs in compost products.

The objective of this study was to investigate associations between gastrointestinal microbiota and protein metabolism of lambs infected with Haemonchus contortus. Sixteen male Ujumqin lambs (initial body weight = 32.4 ± 3.9 kg) were dewormed and randomly assigned to 2 equal groups, to be infected or not infected with Haemonchus contortus (GIN and CON, respectively). The experiment lasted 77 days. The GIN lambs had lower packed cell volume (PCV) and increased wormegg count (WEC) after 14 days. Furthermore, in infected lambs, there were decreases in apparent digestibility of dry matter (P = 0.011), crude protein (P = 0.004) and ether extract (P = 0.007), as well as decreased ruminal pepsin (P < 0.001) and lipase (P = 0.032) activity but increased ruminal α-amylase (P = 0.004) and cellulase activity (P = 0.002), and decreased jejunal α-amylase activity (P = 0.033). In addition, infection with H. contortus decreased alpha diversity of the gastrointestinal microbial community in the rumen, abomasum and duodenum, although microbiota associated with carbohydrate and proteolytic metabolism were increased and up to 32 KEGG pathways in the duodenum were predicted to be significantly affected. In conclusion, H. contortus infection in lambs altered the gastrointestinal microbial community composition and disturbed protein digestion and allocation of absorbed amino acids. These results provided insights into consequences of H. contortus infection in lambs and could facilitate development of novel nutritional strategies to improve animal health.
