RESUMO

The rapid growth of the global population has led to an unprecedented demand for dietary protein. Canola seeds, being a widely utilized oil resource, generate substantial meal by-products following oil extraction. Fortunately, canola meals are rich in protein. In this present review, foremost attention is directed towards summarizing the characteristics of canola seed and canola seed protein. Afterwards, points of discussion related to pretreatment include an introduction to pulsed electric field treatment (PEF), microwave treatment (MC), and ultrasound treatment (UL). Then, the extraction method is illustrated, including alkaline extraction, isoelectric precipitation, acid precipitation, micellization (salt extraction), and dry fractionation and tribo-electrostatic separation. Finally, the structural complexity, physicochemical properties, and functional capabilities of rapeseed seeds, as well as the profound impact of various applications of rapeseed proteins, are elaborated. Through a narrative review of recent research findings, this paper aims to enhance a comprehensive understanding of the potential of canola seed protein as a valuable nutritional supplement, highlighting the pivotal role played by various extraction methods. Additionally, it sheds light on the broad spectrum of applications where canola protein demonstrates its versatility and indispensability as a resource.

Portal vein gas accumulation and intestinal pneumatosis are uncommon signs indicating a high mortality risk in cases of intestinal ischemic necrosis. However, the widespread use of computed tomography has led to an increase in detection of benign lesions. We report a case of portal vein gas accumulation resulting from organophosphorus pesticide poisoning. A male patient was brought to the hospital in a comatose state with bilateral pupils that measured 1.0 mm, and he showed shortness of breath and wet rattles in the lungs. A cholinesterase concentration of 214 U/L was detected on an auxiliary examination. The patient was diagnosed with organophosphorus pesticide poisoning and underwent mechanical ventilation, hemoperfusion, and continuous renal replacement therapy according to the poisoning guidelines. On the fifth day, considerable abdominal distension was observed. An abdominal computed tomography scan revealed dilation of the small bowel and ascending colon with fluid and gas accumulation, as well as gas within the intestinal wall and hepatic veins. Although portal vein gas and intestinal pneumatosis are a sign of mortality requiring immediate surgical intervention, an increasing number of benign cases suggests potential benefits of conservative treatment approaches.

The porous materials (PM) were prepared by the Pickering high internal phase emulsion (PHIPE) template. Firstly, the nanoparticles named as ZHMNPs or MZHMNPs were fabricated based on zein, Hohenbuehelia serotina polysaccharides and Malus baccata (Linn.) Borkh polyphenols without or with Maillard reaction, the average particle sizes and zeta potentials of which were distributed in a range of 718.1-979.4 nm and -21.6-25.2 mV. ZHMNPs possessed the relatively uniform spherical morphology, while MZHMNPs were irregular in shape. With ZHMNPs or MZHMNPs serving as the stabilizers, the PHIPEs were prepared, and exhibited the good viscoelasticity and excellent storage and freeze-thaw stabilities. Based on above PHIPEs template, the constructed PM possessed the large specific surface area and uniform pore structure. Through the investigations of adsorption performances, PM showed the outstanding adsorption capacities on Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions regardless of dissolving in deionized water or simulated gastrointestinal digestive fluid. Furthermore, the results also showed that the pH, temperature and adsorbent dosage had certain impacts on the adsorption performances of PM on Pb2+ and Cu2+ ions.

The aim of this study was to construct the nanoparticles based on Hohenbuehelia serotina polysaccharides and mucin for encapsulation of the polyphenols from Malus baccata (Linn.) Borkh (MBP-MC-HSP NPs), and investigate their effects on intestinal function and gut microbiota in mice. The results showed that MBP-MC-HSP NPs did not have any toxic and side effect by determining organ indexes and hematological parameters. The colonic index, colonic length as well as colonic histology were significantly improved by treatment of MBP-MC-HSP NPs. Moreover, MBP-MC-HSP NPs could increase the fecal moisture (84.71 %) and accelerate the intestinal peristalsis (77.87 %), thus reducing the defecation time (1.68 h) of mice at certain extent. Through production of acetic acid, propionic acid and n-butyric acid, MBP-MC-HSP NPs remarkably decreased the pH of colonic feces to maintain intestinal health. 16S rRNA sequencing analysis showed that MBP-MC-HSP NPs could improve the abundances of Lactobacillus, Butyicicoccus and Ruminococcus and suppress the richness of Prevotella, Bifidobacterium and Desulfovibrio, thereby optimizing the structure and composition of gut microbiota. Furthermore, the metabolic profiles of gut microbiota were influenced by MBP-MC-HSP NPs based on prediction of KEGG and COG databases. Overall, this study suggests that MBP-MC-HSP NPs can be developed and utilized as probiotics in the nutritional food field.

With the aid of 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpee), a nitrogen-donor ligand and 1,3,5-tris(carboxymethoxy)benzene (H3TCMB), a tripodal ether-connector tricarboxylate ligand, two novel transition metal coordination polymers (CPs) have been synthesized via the reaction of Zn(NO3)2·6H2O or Cu(NO3)2·3H2O with the ligands of H3TCMB and bpee ligands with similar reactions under slightly distinct temperatures (80℃ for 1 and 120℃ for 2), and their chemical formula are [Cu4(TCMB)2(bpee)2(µ3-OH)2(H2O)2]n·12nH2O (1) and [Zn4(TCMB)2(bpee)2(µ3-OH)2(H2O)2]n·12nH2O (2). Complex 2 can be utilized as a super sensitive fluorescence quenching sensor to determine the Fe3+ ions. The effect of these two compounds on the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into the cells of vascular endothelial was further explored.

Non-invasive micro-test techniques (NMT) were used to analyze NaCl-altered flux profiles of K+, Na+, and H+ in roots and effects of NaHS (a H2S donor) on root ion fluxes in two contrasting poplar species, Populus euphratica (salt-resistant) and Populus popularis (salt-sensitive). Both poplar species displayed a net K+ efflux after exposure to salt shock (100 mM NaCl), as well as after short-term (24 h), and long-term (LT) (5 days) saline treatment (50 mM NaCl, referred to as salt stress). NaHS (50 µM) restricted NaCl-induced K+ efflux in roots irrespective of the duration of salt exposure, but K+ efflux was not pronounced in data collected from the LT salt stress treatment of P. euphratica. The NaCl-induced K+ efflux was inhibited by a K+ channel blocker, tetraethylammonium chloride (TEA) in P. popularis root samples, but K+ loss increased with a specific inhibitor of plasma membrane (PM) H+-ATPase, sodium orthovanadate, in both poplar species under LT salt stress and NaHS treatment. This indicates that NaCl-induced K+ loss was through depolarization-activated K+ channels. NaHS caused increased Na+ efflux and a corresponding increase in H+ influx for poplar roots subjected to both the short- and LT salt stress. The NaHS-enhanced H+ influx was not significant in P. euphratica samples subjected to short term salt stress. Both sodium orthovanadate and amiloride (a Na+/H+ antiporter inhibitor) effectively inhibited the NaHS-augmented Na+ efflux, indicating that the H2S-enhanced Na+ efflux was due to active Na+ exclusion across the PM. We therefore conclude that the beneficial effects of H2S probably arise from upward regulation of the Na+/H+ antiport system (H+ pumps and Na+/H+ antiporters), which promote exchange of Na+ with H+ across the PM and simultaneously restricted the channel-mediated K+ loss that activated by membrane depolarization.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have examined risk factors of nosocomial bloodstream infections. However risk factors of nosocomial bloodstream infections in surgical intensive care unit have never been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate this topic. METHODS: Retrospective surgical intensive care unit patients' data were collected in a tertiary hospital from January 2010 to August 2014. Infected and non-infected patients were compared with univariate analysis of categorical variables to obtain statistical significance risk factors. Then multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to acquire the final risk factors. RESULTS: 98 patients were diagnosed with nosocomial bloodstream infections in total. Mortality rate was 29.6% (n=29). The data indicated gram-positive cocci were the main pathogens (64.3%; n=63). Multivariate logistic analysis indicated that age (>65 years old) (OR, 2.297; CI95, 0.870 to 6.062), acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II score (>18) (OR, 6.981; CI95, 2.330 to 15.865), multiple organ dysfunction score (>8) (OR, 9.857; CI95, 6.395 to 19.505), mechanical ventilation (OR, 4.583; CI95, 2.134 to 10.956), central venous catheter (OR, 5.875; CI95, 2.212 to 13.456) and selective surgery (OR, 3.455; CI95, 3.442-9.235) were risk factors of nosocomial BSI. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with nosocomial bloodstream infections in surgical intensive care unit setting often have a poor prognosis. Age (>65 years old), chronic health evaluation II score (>18), multiple organ dysfunction score (>8), usage of mechanical ventilation, central venous catheter and selective surgery can be regarded as risk factors.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness and short-term outcomes of endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) combined with pinhole high ligation (PHL) in the treatment of great saphenous varicose veins. METHODS: From February 2011 to May 2012, 200 patients with great saphenous varicose veins were treated using combined EVLT and PHL. Sixty-eight of them had concurrent TriVex suction. There were 118 men and 82 women with a median age of 61 (range 28-82) years. All patients had more than one of the following presentations, including lower extremity heaviness, pain, edema, varicose vein, skin changes, or ulceration. Based on the CEAP clinical classification, 20 patients had C2, 85 had C3, 48 had C4, 23 had C5, and 24 had C6 chronic venous disease. Ninety patients had VV involving the left lower extremity, 56 involving the right lower extremity, and 54 involving the bilateral lower extremities. Duplex ultrasound (US) was performed for all the 200 patients, and showed great saphenous valve dysfunction and reflux in 148 patients. Fifty-two of the 200 patients had concurrent mild femoral vein reflux. Deep venous thrombosis (DVT) was ruled out in all the patients. RESULTS: Technical success rate of PHL and laser ablation was 100%. Median follow-up was 9 months, ranging from 3 to 20 months. Symptoms were resolved or significantly improved in all patients after surgery. The ulcers healed in 23 of the 24 patients (96%) within 3 months. Ten patients developed subcutaneous hematoma, and 8 had slightly worsening edema. Ten patients with complications of numbness due to saphenous nerve burning injury were treated with mecobalamin, and the numbness sensation improved within 1 month and disappeared within 3 months. Nine patients sustained saphenous vein thrombophlebitis postoperatively and were treated with ibuprofen and a heating pad. There was no recanalization of the great saphenous vein, deep venous thrombosis (DVT), or deaths in this group of patients. CONCLUSIONS: Combined EVLT and PHL are less invasive and are effective in the treatment of symptomatic great saphenous varicose veins. PHL prevents DVT, and significantly decreases recanalization of the great saphenous vein after endovenous laser ablation. Short-term outcomes have been satisfactory, but long-term follow-up is needed.

Using 3-month-old seedlings of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) Savigny and Kandelia candel (L.) Druce, we compared species differences in ionic homeostasis control between the two non-secretor mangrove species. A high salinity (400 mM NaCl, 4 weeks) resulted in a decline of the K(+)/Na(+) ratio in root and leaf tissues, and the reduction was more pronounced in K. candel (41-66%) as compared with B. gymnorrhiza (5-36%). Salt-altered flux profiles of Na(+), K(+), H(+) and Ca(2+) in roots and effects of exogenous hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), nitric oxide (NO) and Ca(2+) on root ion fluxes were examined in seedlings that were hydroponically treated short term with 100 mM NaCl (ST, 24 h) and long term with 200 mM NaCl (LT, 7 days). Short term and LT salinity resulted in Na(+) efflux and a correspondingly increased H(+) influx in roots of both species, although a more pronounced effect was observed in B. gymnorrhiza. The salt-enhanced exchange of Na(+) with H(+) was obviously inhibited by amiloride (a Na(+)/H(+) antiporter inhibitor) or sodium orthovanadate (a plasma membrane H(+)-ATPase inhibitor), indicating that the Na(+) efflux resulted from active Na(+) exclusion across the plasma membrane. Short term and LT salinity accelerated K(+) efflux in the two species, but K. candel exhibited a higher flux rate. The salt-induced K(+) efflux was markedly restricted by the K(+) channel blocker, tetraethylammonium chloride, indicating that the K(+) efflux is mediated by depolarization-activated channels, e.g., KORCs (outward rectifying K(+) channels) and NSCCs (non-selective cation channels). Exogenous H(2)O(2) application (10 mM) markedly increased the apparent Na(+) efflux and limited K(+) efflux in ST-treated roots, although H(2)O(2) caused a higher Na(+) efflux in B. gymnorrhiza roots. CaCl(2) (10 mM) reduced the efflux of K(+) in salinized roots of the two mangroves, but its enhancement of Na(+) efflux was found only in B. gymnorrhiza. Under ST treatment, sodium nitroprusside (SNP) (100 ∝M, an NO donor) increased Na(+) efflux at the root apex of the two species; however, its inhibition of K(+) loss was seen only in K. candel. Of note, NaCl caused an obvious influx of Ca(2+) in B. gymnorrhiza roots, which was enhanced by H(2)O(2) (10 mM). Therefore, the salt-induced Ca(2+) benefits B. gymnorrhiza in maintaining K(+)/Na(+) homeostasis under high external salinity.
