RESUMO

Clinical outcomes for total-pancreatectomy followed by intraportal islet autotransplantation (TP-IAT) to treat chronic pancreatitis (CP) are suboptimal due to pancreas inflammation, oxidative stress during islet isolation, and harsh engraftment conditions in the liver's vasculature. We describe a thermoresponsive, antioxidant macromolecule poly(polyethylene glycol citrate-co-N-isopropylacrylamide) (PPCN) to protect islet redox status and function and to enable extrahepatic omentum islet engraftment. PPCN solution transitions from a liquid to a hydrogel at body temperature. Islets entrapped in PPCN and exposed to oxidative stress remain functional and support long-term euglycemia, in contrast to islets entrapped in a plasma-thrombin biologic scaffold. In the nonhuman primate (NHP) omentum, PPCN is well-tolerated and mostly resorbed without fibrosis at 3 months after implantation. In NHPs, autologous omentum islet transplantation using PPCN restores normoglycemia with minimal exogenous insulin requirements for >100 days. This preclinical study supports TP-IAT with PPCN in patients with CP and highlights antioxidant properties as a mechanism for islet function preservation.

RESUMO

Neonicotinoids (NEOs) are the most widely used insecticides globally. They can contaminate or migrate into foodstuffs and exert severe neonic toxicity on humans. Therefore, lots of feasible analytical methods were developed to assure food safety. Nevertheless, there is a lack of evaluation that the impacts of food attributes on the accurate determination of NEOs. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of sample preparation methods regarding 6 categories of plant-derived foodstuffs. Currently, QuEChERS as the common strategy can effectively extract NEOs from plant-derived foodstuffs. Various enrichment technologies were developed for trace levels of NEOs in processed foodstuffs, and multifarious novel sorbents provided more possibility for removing complex matrices to lower matrix effects. Additionally, detection methods based on liquid chromatography were summarized and discussed in this review. Finally, some limitations were summarized and new directions were proposed for better advancement.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate factors that may influence humoral immunity post-vaccination with a COVID-19-inactivated vaccine (SC2IV). METHODS: A total of 1596 healthy individuals from the Seventh Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University (1217) and Shenzhen Baotian Hospital (379) were enrolled in this study among which 694 and 218 participants were vaccinated with two-dose SC2IV, respectively. Physical examination indices were recorded. The levels of neutralizing antibody (NA), Spike IgG, receptor-binding domain (RBD) IgG, RBD IgG + IgM + IgA, and nucleocapsid IgG of SARS-CoV-2 were measured by a non-virus ELISA kit. Multiple statistical analyses were carried out to identify factors that influence humoral immunity post-vaccination. RESULTS: The two-dosage vaccination could induce NA in more than 90 % of recipients. The NA has the strongest correlation with anti-RBD IgG. Age is the most important independent index that affects the NA level, while basophil count, creatine kinase-MB, mean corpuscular hemoglobin, the ratio of albumin to urine creatinine, and thyroglobulin antibody have relatively minor contributions. Indices that affect the NA level were different between males and females. Antibodies targeting other epitopes of SARS-CoV-2 were detected in recipients without anti-RBD. CONCLUSIONS: The factors identified in association with the NA level post-vaccination may help to evaluate the protective effect, risk of re-infection, the severity of symptoms, and prognosis for vaccine recipients in clinical.

RESUMO

Background The Ovarian-Adnexal Reporting and Data System (O-RADS) has limited specificity for malignancy. Contrast-enhanced US can help distinguish malignant from benign lesions, but its added value to O-RADS has not yet been assessed. Purpose To establish a diagnostic model combining O-RADS and contrast-enhanced US and to validate whether O-RADS plus contrast-enhanced US has a better diagnostic performance than O-RADS alone. Materials and Methods This prospective study included participants from May 2018 to March 2021 who underwent contrast-enhanced US before surgery and had lesions categorized as O-RADS 3, 4, or 5 by US, with a histopathologic reference standard. From April 2021 to July 2022, participants with pathologically confirmed ovarian-adnexal lesions were recruited for the validation group. In the pilot group, the initial enhancement time and enhancement intensity in comparison with the uterine myometrium, contrast agent distribution pattern, and dynamic changes in enhancement of lesions were assessed. Contrast-enhanced US features were used to calculate contrast-enhanced US scores for benign (score ≤2) and malignant (score ≥4) lesions. Lesions were then re-rated according to O-RADS category plus contrast-enhanced US scores. Receiver operating characteristic curves were constructed and compared using the DeLong method. The combined system was validated in an independent group. Results The pilot group included 76 women (mean age, 44 years ± 13 [SD]), and the validation group included 46 women (mean age, 42 years ± 14). Differences in initial enhancement time (P < .001), enhancement intensity (P < .001), and dynamic changes in enhancement (P < .001) between benign and malignant lesions were observed in the pilot group. Contrast-enhanced US scores were calculated using these features. The O-RADS risk stratification was upgraded one level for contrast-enhanced US scores of 4 or more and downgraded one level for contrast-enhanced US scores of 2 or less. In the validation group, the diagnostic performance of O-RADS plus contrast-enhanced US score was higher (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUC] = 0.93) than O-RADS (AUC = 0.71, P < .001). Conclusion Contrast-enhanced US improved the diagnostic performance for malignancy of the O-RADS categories 3-5. © RSNA, 2023 Supplemental material is available for this article. RESUMO

Background: Obesity is a common and highly convincing risk factor for many cancers, including liver cancer. Sex disparities in the body composition and regulatory mechanisms involved in energy homeostasis may contribute to the difference in the incidence of cancer. However, evidence on the gender-specific association between body composition and liver cancer incidence is limited. We performed this study to investigate the linear and non-linear associations of body composition with liver cancer risk by gender. Materials and methods: This prospective analysis included 4,75,659 participants free of cancer, based on the UK Biobank. We used Cox proportional hazard models to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) after adjusting for potential confounders. Restricted cubic spline was performed to investigate the potential non-linear associations. Results: During a median follow-up, 275 cases (174 male patients and 101 female patients) of liver cancer were identified. Male patients in the highest body fat percentage group are more likely to develop liver cancer (HR = 1.89, 95% CI: 1.17-3.03) compared with those in the lowest group. The one-unit increase of whole-body fat mass, arm fat mass, and trunk fat mass was associated with 1.03-, 1.14-, and 1.05-fold increased risk of liver cancer in male subjects, respectively. U-shaped associations of body composition with liver cancer risk were observed in the female subjects. Both high and low levels of whole-body fat-free mass, particularly in the arm and trunk, were associated with an increased risk of liver cancer. Conclusion: This study found a gender-specific association between body composition and liver cancer risk and provided evidence for individualized weight management for the prevention of liver cancer.

RESUMO

Dinotefuran (DNT) belongs to the third-generation neonicotinoid pesticides, which are among the most common residuals in a variety of food commodities. To guarantee accurate quantification and traceability of results in food samples, certified reference materials (CRMs) are the indispensable benchmark. In this work, a DNT CRM was characterized and its purity was assessed by two independent methods, including mass balance (MB) and quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (qNMR). The mass fraction of moisture was 0.33 mg/g, the inorganic impurity was 0.01 mg/g, and no detectable organic solvent was detected. Benzoic acid was chosen as the internal standard for qNMR. Its mass fraction was 997.9 mg/g and 992.9 mg/g by MB and qNMR, respectively. Eventually, the DNT CRM was assigned a mass fraction of 995 mg/g, with expanded uncertainty of 5 mg/g (k = 2). This CRM can be used to prepare calibrant solutions and is applicable to national routine monitoring of DNT residuals in agro-products and food.

RESUMO

Purpose: To investigate the diurnal variation in subfoveal choroidal thickness (SFCT) during the waking period over three consecutive days in different degrees of myopia and emmetropia. Methods: A total of 60 adult volunteers were grouped into low, moderate, high myopia, and emmetropia subgroups. SFCT, axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), and intraocular pressure (IOP) were measured every 2 h from 8 AM to 8 PM for three successive days. Results: The mean values of daily change amplitude were 3.18 mmHg (IOP), 0.05 mm (AL), 0.17 mm (ACD), and 13.51 µm (SFCT). The values of AL and ACD increased simultaneously with spherical equivalent refraction (SER), but SFCT was the opposite. IOP had a diurnal variation, and there was no difference among the four groups. AL of the high myopia group, ACD of the emmetropia group, and SFCT of each myopia group had diurnal variation over three consecutive days. AL had a high mean value at noon every day, and SFCT had a low mean value at noon every day. Conclusion: The choroid thickness of subjects with different degrees of myopia had a significant diurnal variation. The change of diurnal variation between emmetropic and myopic subjects may be one of the causes of myopia.

RESUMO

Capillary zone electrophoresis ultraviolet (CZE-UV) has become increasingly popular for the charge heterogeneity determination of mAbs and vaccines. The ε-aminocaproic acid (eACA) CZE-UV method has been used as a rapid platform method. However, in the last years, several issues have been observed, for example, loss in electrophoretic resolution or baseline drifts. Evaluating the role of eACA on the reported issues, various laboratories were requested to provide their routinely used eACA CZE-UV methods, and background electrolyte compositions. Although every laboratory claimed to use the He et al. eACA CZE-UV method, most methods actually deviate from He's. Subsequently, a detailed interlaboratory study was designed wherein two commercially available mAbs (Waters' Mass Check Standard mAb [pI 7] and NISTmAb [pI 9]) were provided to each laboratory, along with two detailed eACA CZE-UV protocols for a short-end, high-speed, and a long-end, high-resolution method. Ten laboratories participated each using their own instruments, and commodities, showing excellence method performance (relative standard deviations [RSDs] of percent time-corrected main peak areas from 0.2% to 1.9%, and RSDs of migration times from 0.7% to 1.8% [n = 50 per laboratory], analysis times in some cases as short as 2.5 min). This study clarified that eACA is not the main reason for the abovementioned variations.

RESUMO

Background: Kandelia obovata is an important mangrove species extensively distributed in Eastern Asia that is susceptible to low-temperature stress. NAC (NAM, ATAF1/2 and CUC2) domain proteins are transcription factors (TFs) that play various roles in plant growth and development and in the plant response to environmental stresses. Nevertheless, genome-wide analyses of K. obovata NAC genes (KoNACs) and their responses to chilling stress have rarely been studied. Methods: The KoNAC gene family was identified and characterized using bioinformatic analysis, the subcellular location of some NAC proteins was confirmed using confocal microscopy analysis, and the KoNACs that responded to chilling stress were screened using RNA-seq and qRT-PCR analysis. Results: A total of 79 KoNACs were identified, and they were unequally distributed across all 18 chromosomes of K. obovata. The KoNAC proteins could be divided into 16 subgroups according to the phylogenetic tree based on NAC family members of Arabidopsis thaliana. The KoNACs exhibited greater synteny with A. thaliana sequences than with Oryza sativa sequences, indicating that KoNACs underwent extensive evolution after the divergence of dicotyledons and monocotyledons. Segmental duplication was the main driving force of the expansions of KoNAC genes. Confocal microscopy analysis verified that the four randomly selected KoNACs localized to the nucleus, indicating the accuracy of the bioinformatic predictions. Tissue expression pattern analysis demonstrated that some KoNAC genes showed tissue-specific expression, suggesting that these KoNACs might be important for plant development and growth. Additionally, the expression levels of 19 KoNACs were significantly (15 positively and 4 negatively) induced by cold treatment, demonstrating that these KoNACs might play important roles during cold stress responses and might be candidate genes for the genetic engineering of K. obovata with enhanced chilling stress tolerance. Coexpression network analysis revealed that 381 coexpressed pairs (between 13 KoNACs and 284 other genes) were significantly correlated. Conclusions: Seventy-nine KoNACs were identified in K. obovata, nineteen of which displayed chilling-induced expression patterns. These genes may serve as candidates for functional analyses of KoNACs engaged in chilling stress. Our results lay the foundation for evolutionary analyses of KoNACs and their molecular mechanisms in response to environmental stress.

RESUMO

Objective: The aim of this review is to provide guidance on the selection of approaches to the screening and assessment of enthesitis in patients with spondyloarthritis (SpA). Methods: Twenty-four questions regarding the approaches to the screening and assessment of enthesitis and the implementation details were devised, followed by a systemic literature review. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation methodology was employed in the development of this guideline, with modifications to evaluate non-interventional approaches under comprehensive consideration of costs, accessibility, and evidence strength. A consensus from the voting panel was required for the inclusion of the final recommendations and the strength of each recommendation. Results: Seventeen recommendations (including five strong recommendations) were included in this guideline. The voting panel expressed unequivocal support for the necessity of screening and assessment of enthesitis in patients with SpA. It was agreed unanimously that symptom evaluation and physical examination should serve as the initial steps to the recognition of enthesitis, whereas Maastricht Ankylosing Spondylitis Enthesitis Score is a reliable tool in both clinical trials and daily medical practice. Ultrasound examination is another reliable tool, with power Doppler ultrasound as an informative addition. Notwithstanding its high resolution, MRI is limited by the costs and relatively low accessibility, whereas radiographs had low sensitivity and therefore should be rendered obsolete in the assessment of enthesitis. PET/CT was strongly opposed in the detection of enthesitis. Conclusion: This guideline provides clinicians with information regarding the screening and assessment of enthesitis in patients with SpA. However, this guideline does not intend on dictating choices, and the ultimate decisions should be made in light of the actual circumstances of the facilities.

RESUMO

Circular RNAs (circRNAs) play critical regulatory roles in cancer biological processes. Nevertheless, the contributions and underlying mechanisms of circRNAs to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remain largely unexplored. Dysregulated circRNAs between cancerous tissues and matched adjacent normal tissues were identified by circRNA microarray in PDAC. The biological effect of hsa_circ_007367 both in vitro and in vivo was demonstrated by gain- and loss-of-function experiments. Further, dual-luciferase reporter and RNA pull-down assays were performed to confirm the interaction among hsa_circ_007367, miR-6820-3p, and Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1). The expression of hsa_circ_007367 and YAP1 were detected by in situ hybridization (ISH) and immunohistochemistry (IHC) using tissue microarray (TMA) in 128 PDAC samples. We first identified that a novel circRNA, hsa_circ_0007367, was markedly upregulated in PDAC tissues and cells. Functionally, in vivo and in vitro data indicated that hsa_circ_0007367 promotes the proliferation and metastasis of PDAC. Mechanistically, we confirmed that hsa_circ_0007367 could facilitate the expression of YAP1, a well-known oncogene, by sponging miR-6820-3p, which function as a tumor suppresser in PDAC cells. The results of ISH and IHC demonstrated that hsa_circ_0007367 and YAP1 were upregulated in PDAC tissues. Furthermore, clinical data showed that higher hsa_circ_0007367 expression was correlated with advanced histological grade and lymph node metastasis in PDAC patients. In conclusion, our findings reveal that hsa_circ_0007367 acts as an oncogene via modulating miR-6820-3p/YAP1 axis to promote the progression of PDAC, and suggest that hsa_circ_0007367 may serve as a potential therapeutic target for treatment of PDAC.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the feasibility and usefulness of transabdominal color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) technology and the high-definition flow imaging (HDFI) technique in detecting fetal pulmonary veins (PVs) in the first trimester (11-13+6 weeks). METHODS: From December 2018 to October 2019, 328 pregnant women with 328 normal singleton fetuses (crown-rump length: 45-84 mm) who had undergone CDFI and HDFI scans for fetal heart and vessel examination were enrolled in this study. The cases were divided into three groups according to the gestational age: group A, 11+0 -11+6 weeks; group B, 12+0 -12+6 weeks; and group C, 13+0 -13+6 weeks. Baseline sonograms and CDFI and HDFI images were analyzed by two senior radiologists independently and blindly. The abilities of CDFI and HDFI to display PVs were compared. RESULTS: Successful PV display rates via CDFI and HDFI were 2.3% and 68.2% (P<0.01), 22.4% and 82.4% (P<0.01), 41.5% and 91.2% (P<0.01) for group A, group B, and group C, respectively. The total successful display rates for the two methods were 28.9% (CDFI) and 84.8% (HDFI) (P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The HDFI technique is more valuable than CDFI for detecting PVs in early pregnancy (11-13+6 weeks). HDFI can detect at least one PV in all cases and may be used to detect pulmonary venous anomalies early.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate prenatal manifestations of Emanuel syndrome (ES) by retrospectively analyzing the results of prenatal diagnosis. METHODS: Thirteen fetuses were collected from five hospitals, of which six were confirmed with 47,der(22)t(11;22; ES) by karyotype and chromosomal microarray analysis (CMA). Seven were diagnosed with 46,t(11;22) balanced translocations by karyotype, including one de novo mosaic 46,XX,t(11;22). In 3/7, CMA was performed but did not identify chromosomal imbalances. The results of prenatal diagnoses were reviewed, including ultrasound examinations and genetic testing. RESULTS: In ES fetuses, the derivative 22 was consistently inherited from the mother, while in the balanced translocation group, the t(11;22) chromosome was of paternal origin in 3/6 cases, All ES fetuses presented with multiple abnormalities by ultrasound examinations. Diaphragm hernia (3/6), Dandy-Walker complex (3/6), and kidney aplasia (3/6), were the most common ultrasound findings. Sonographic soft markers such as increased nuchal translucency, increased nuchal fold thickness appeared in 3 cases and all of these were associated with other anomalies. However, none of the ultrasound findings differentiated ES from other genetic syndromes during fetal period. CONCLUSIONS: In this series, in fetuses with a der(22), the derivative chromosome was consistently of maternal origin. In contrast, 46,t(11;22) balanced translocations were of maternal or paternal origin. The results contribute to the literature regarding the fetal phenotype of ES. Due to the absence of specific features distinguishing ES from other genetic syndromes, confirming the diagnosis through invasive genetic testing is necessary.

RESUMO

A 19-year-old man complaining of anuria for 1 day was presented. A ureteral stent was indwelled 3 months ago for preventing ureteral obstruction and protecting kidney function. Abdominopelvic computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a solitary pelvic ectopic kidney (PEK) and severe hydronephrosis. And the ureteral stent was covered by encrustations which caused ureteral obstruction. The stent had been retained in his ureter for more than 3 months until he was admitted. It couldn't be removed after shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) or flexible ureteroscope laser lithotripsy (f-URS). Finally, we had to conduct open surgery which was an alternative option. The stent was replaced by a new one successfully. The patient was discharged safely without postoperative complications. After 2 months of follow-up, the patient's renal function remained stable.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate International Endometrial Tumor Analysis (IETA) ultrasonographic characteristics simple scoring method and tumor biomarkers for the diagnosis of uterine cavity and endometrial lesions. METHODS: We classified and scored the normalized description of IETA ultrasonic characteristics, according to IETA expert consensus literature, previous IETA-related research articles, and the previous research experience of this project group. We conducted a retrospective analysis of the ultrasound images of 594 patients enrolled from January 2017 to June 2020, scored them item by item, and finally calculated the total score of each case. Meanwhile, we combined the results of seven tumor biomarkers. The objective was to evaluate the sensitivity, specificity, coincidence rate, and the area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of IETA ultrasonographic characteristics simple scoring method and tumor biomarkers for benign and malignant uterine cavity or endometrial lesions. The diagnostic efficiency between the combined method and the single method was compared. RESULTS: A total of 594 cases were confirmed by postoperative pathology or surgery records, including 475 benign lesions and 119 malignant lesions. In the simple ultrasound scoring method, the average score of benign lesions was 3.879 ± 1.279 and that of malignant lesions was 9.676 ± 4.491. If ≥6.5 points was taken as the cutoff value for the judgment of malignant lesions, the sensitivity, specificity, coincidence rate, and the area under receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) were 76.5%, 96.0%, 92.1%, and 0.935, respectively. The difference in tumor antigen 19-9 (CA19-9) and human epididymal protein 4 (HE4) between benign and malignant lesions was statistically significant (all p ≤ 0.01). The other five tumor biomarkers (CA125, CA15-3, SCC-Ag, AFP, and CEA) showed no statistically significant difference in benign and malignant lesions. If the value of CA19-9 ≥13.96 U/ml was taken as cutoff value, the sensitivity, specificity, and coincidence rate of the diagnosis of endometrial benign and malignant lesions were 54.8%, 74.7%, and 70.7%, respectively, and the AUC was 0.620. If the value of HE4 ≥ 39.075 pmol/L was taken as cutoff point, the sensitivity, specificity, coincidence rate, and AUC were 77.4%, 67.9%, 69.8%, and 0.796, respectively. The sensitivity was increased to 97.6% and the AUC was 0.939 when IETA ultrasound characteristics simple scoring method combined CA19-9 and HE4 in parallel test. CONCLUSIONS: In IETA ultrasound characteristics simple scoring method, with ≥6.5 points as the cutoff value, it could quickly and accurately assess the benign and malignant in uterine cavity and endometrial lesions, with high diagnostic value. The diagnostic efficacy of seven tumor biomarkers was all mediocre. Combining with these two methods, the comprehensive diagnosis could improve sensitivity and accuracy and reduce the risk of missed diagnosis.

RESUMO

Talipariti tiliaceum is an evergreen mangrove associate species distributed throughout the world. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome sequence of T. tiliaceum was assembled and characterized using high-throughput sequencing data. The chloroplast genome was found to be 161 766 bp in length, consisting of large single-copy (LSC) and small single-copy (SSC) regions of 89 273 and 19 551 bp, respectively, which were separated by a pair of 26 471 bp inverted repeat (IR) regions. The genome contained 129 genes, including 84 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. A phylogenetic tree including 66 chloroplast genomes from various species revealed that T. tiliaceum was most related to T. hamabo of the same genus.

RESUMO

This randomized clinical trial (RCT) is aimed at exploring the best nebulizer position for aerosol delivery within the mechanical ventilation (MV) circuitry. This study enrolled 75 intubated and MV patients with respiratory failure and randomly divided them into three groups. The nebulizer position of patients in group A was between the tracheal tube and Y-piece. For group B, the nebulizer was placed at the inspiratory limb near the ventilator water cup (80 cm away from the Y-piece). For group C, the nebulizer was placed between the ventilator inlet and the heated humidifier. An indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure salbutamol drug concentrations in serum and urine. The serum and urine salbutamol concentrations of the three groups were the highest in group B, followed by group C, and the lowest in group A. Serum and urine salbutamol concentrations significantly differed among the three groups (P < 0.05). It was found that the drug was statistically significant between group differences for groups B and A (P = 0.001; P = 0.002, respectively) for both serum and urine salbutamol concentrations. There were no significant differences observed among the other groups. It was found that the drug concentrations were the highest when the nebulizer was placed 80 cm away from the Y-piece, while the location between the tracheal tube and the Y-piece with the higher frequency of nebulizer placement was the location with the lowest drug concentration.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To compare perioperative outcomes and long-term renal function changes between prior stenting (PS) and not prior stenting (NPS) before flexible ureteroscopy lithotripsy (f-URS) for solitary kidney patients. METHODS: Solitary kidney patients with 10-30 mm renal stones were enrolled in this historical control study. Perioperative parameters and complications were compared. Stone-free was defined as the absence of any residual stones on a CT scan. Renal function changes were evaluated by estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and adjusted for body surface area. A decrease in the eGFR over 20% was identified as 'deterioration' in renal function. The follow-up period was at least 6 months. Logistic regression was used to identify risk factors of renal function deterioration. RESULTS: Of the 76 patients included, 40 cases experienced prior stenting before f-URS. The average stone diameter was 16.8 ± 4.7 mm, ranging from 10.0 to 28.4 mm. Initial SFR was 85.0 and 83.3% in the PS and NPS groups, respectively (p = 0.842), while SFR after the second procedure was 97.5 and 94.4% (p = 0.926). Seven PS and 5 NPS patients developed complications (p = 0.666). At the postoperative 6 months, seven patients showed a deteriorated renal function. Surgical time in minutes was identified as a risk factor for renal function deterioration after the operation (OR = 1.061, 95% CI: 1.015-1.109, p = 0.009, per minute). CONCLUSION: It appears that one-stage f-URS without PS could be feasible for 10-30 mm renal stones in solitary kidney patients, and less surgical time might be beneficial to protect renal function.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess and report the feasibility and efficacy of electronic follow-up in patients after mid-urethral sling (MUS) operation. METHODS: All 235 patients after MUS operation for stress urinary incontinence (SUI) were divided into the WeChat follow-up (WFU) and the outpatient follow-up (OFU) groups. Patients completed electronic or paper-validated questionnaires. Demographic and clinical characteristics, questionnaire scores, loss to follow-up rate, patient satisfaction, and complications were compared and analyzed. RESULTS: Overall, 189 patients completed the follow-up assessment. The OFU group showed a higher rate of loss to follow-up (25.6% vs. 13.2%, p = 0.016). The mean preoperative International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Urinary Incontinence Short Form (ICIQ-UI SF) scores were 18.22 ± 2.64 and 18.06 ± 2.75 in the WFU and OFU groups, respectively (p = 0.672). The mean postoperative ICIQ-UI SF scores were 3.70 ± 1.65 and 3.86 ± 1.48, respectively (p = 0.489). There were 84.8% of WFU patients and 80% of OFU patients reported "very much better" or "much better" on the Patient Global Impression of Improvement (PGI-I) scale (p = 0.381). Patient satisfaction rate was higher in the WFU group than in the OFU group (87.9% vs. 74.4%, p = 0.018). Seventeen patients reported postoperative complications (9 and 8 patients in the WFU and OFU groups, respectively, p = 0.961). CONCLUSIONS: It appears that electronic follow-up using a mobile phone application is feasible and efficient for patients after MUS operation, and may be associated with improved rates of satisfaction and retention.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Type II diabetes mellitus (DM) is a risk factor for urinary stones, but the pathogenesis remains unclear. The aim of our study was to present the distribution of stone components between DM and no DM group from a local stone center in China and to help the prevention department in decision-making. METHODS: We reviewed the records of patients with upper urinary stones attending our hospital from January 2015 to September 2018. The patients with complete information were divided into 2 groups: type II DM group (DM group) and without DM group (no DM group). The distribution of stone components was analyzed. RESULTS: Two hundred twenty-two patients were complicated with DM, whereas 1,894 (89%) were not. Significant difference was found in the distribution of hypertension and BMI (p = 0, p = 0, respectively). Distribution of sex, age, and stone components did not differ between the 2 groups. By the binary logistic analysis, increasing age and sex seemed to be the main risk factors influencing the stone components. Only the calcium stone seemed to be free of the -impact from age and sex. Occurrence of hypertension is a single risk factor for calcium stone from our analysis. Presence of diabetes and increasing BMI was not found to be significantly associated with the risk for any stone component. CONCLUSIONS: In a local district, DM might not be the main factor associated with an increased risk for uric acid stone formation or any stone component. We should also consider the local characteristics of the stone distribution.
