RESUMO

Dragon's Blood (DB) serves as a precious Chinese medicine facilitating blood circulation and stasis dispersion. Daemonorops draco (D. draco; Qi-Lin-Jie) and Dracaena cochinchinensis (D. cochinchinenesis; Long-Xue-Jie) are two reputable plant sources for preparing DB. This work was designed to comprehensively characterize and compare the metabolome differences between D. draco and D. cochinchinenesis, by integrating liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry and untargeted metabolomics analysis. Offline two-dimensional liquid chromatography/ion mobility-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (2D-LC/IM-QTOF-MS), by utilizing a powerful hybrid scan approach, was elaborated for multicomponent characterization. Configuration of an XBridge Amide column and an HSS T3 column in offline mode exhibited high orthogonality (A0 0.80) in separating the complex components in DB. Particularly, the hybrid high-definition MSE-high definition data-dependent acquisition (HDMSE-HDDDA) in both positive and negative ion modes was applied for data acquisition. Streamlined intelligent data processing facilitated by the UNIFI™ (Waters) bioinformatics platform and searching against an in-house chemical library (recording 223 known compounds) enabled efficient structural elucidation. We could characterize 285 components, including 143 from D. draco and 174 from D. cochinchinensis. Holistic comparison of the metabolomes among 21 batches of DB samples by the untargeted metabolomics workflows unveiled 43 significantly differential components. Separately, four and three components were considered as the marker compounds for identifying D. draco and D. cochinchinenesis, respectively. Conclusively, the chemical composition and metabolomic differences of two DB resources were investigated by a dimension-enhanced analytical approach, with the results being beneficial to quality control and the differentiated clinical application of DB.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To determine the utility of virtual-monoenergetic imaging (VMI) at low energy levels from contrast-enhanced dual-layer dual-energy (DLDE) computed tomography enterography (CTE) in the preoperative assessment of internal penetrating lesions of Crohn's disease (CD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-eight patients with penetrating lesions of CD by surgery undergoing contrast-enhanced DLDE CTE were retrospectively included. Polyenergetic imaging (PEI) and VMIs at low energy levels [40-70 kiloelectron volts (keV)] with 10 keV intervals were reconstructed. The objective parameters of image quality [noise, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR)] and the subjective parameter of image quality [diagnostic performance of lesions (DPL), overall image quality(OIQ)] of PEI and all VMIs at the low energy level were compared to determine the VMI on the optimal energy level. The lesion detection capability between PEI and the optimal VMI was compared. RESULTS: VMI40 was determined to be the optimal VMI among all VMIs at the low energy level for owning the best image quality. No significant difference was found in the detecting capability in penetrating lesions between VMI40 and PEI (p = 1.0), whereas a significant difference was found in the detecting capability in the bowel origin of the penetrating lesions (p = 0.004), the involved organ or structure by the fistula (p = 0.016) and the orifice of the fistula connected to the involved organ or structure ( p = 0.031) between them. CONCLUSIONS: Compared to conventional PEI, VMI40 improves the detection capability in anatomical details of penetrating lesions of CD, helping colorectal surgeons rationalizing preoperative plans of internal penetrating lesions of CD.

RESUMO

Polygonatum odoratum is appreciated for its edible and medicinal benefits especially for lung protection. However, the contained active components have been understudied, and further research is required to fully exploit its potential application. We aimed to probe into the beneficial effects of Polygonatum odoratum polysaccharide (POP) in lipopolysaccharide-induced lung inflammatory injury mice. POP treatment could ameliorate the survival rate, pulmonary function, lung pathological lesions, and immune inflammatory response. POP treatment could repair intestinal barrier, and modulate the composition of gut microbiota, especially reducing the abundance of Klebsiella, which were closely associated with the therapeutic effects of POP. Investigation of the underlying anti-inflammatory mechanism showed that POP suppressed the generation of pro-inflammatory molecules in lung by inhibiting iNOS+ M1 macrophages. Collectively, POP is a promising multi-target microecological regulator to prevent and treat the immuno-inflammation and lung injury by modulating gut microbiota.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to monitor, identify and evaluate severe cutaneous adverse reactions (SCAR) induced by antibiotics in patients. METHODS: Disproportionality algorithms were performed in data mining to screen suspected SCAR after using nine categories of antibiotics based on the FDA's Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) from January 2004 to December 2022. The drug information and demographic characteristics of antibiotic-associated SCAR were also investigated. RESULTS: The FAERS database received 12,212 antibiotic-associated SCAR cases. Approximately half of the SCAR patients were females, the majority of them were adults aged 18-65 years (48.35%), and 47.68% of SCAR patients required hospitalization. The highest SCAR signals RORs (95% CI) for antibiotics were: sulfonamides 23.30 (22.05-24.62), glycopeptides 21.27 (20.26-22.33), penicillins 16.00 (15.44-16.59), carbapenems 10.46 (9.57-11.44), and cephalosporins 13.27 (12.57-14.00). Cefotaxime, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, cefixime, vancomycin, piperacillin, ceftriaxone, amoxicillin, and meropenem had stronger associations with the SCAR than the other antibiotics. However, sulfonamides-associated SCAR cases had the lowest fatality rate (6.23%), penicillin-associated SCAR cases had the highest hospitalization rate (54.16%), and carbapenem-associated SCAR cases seemingly resulted in the highest risk of death (19.03%). CONCLUSION: Data mining of FAERS identified 30 antibiotic-associated SCAR signals, and provided a referable evidence of the occurrence, characteristics and prognosis of antibiotic-related SCARs.

RESUMO

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with a one-dimensional (1D), ribbon-like structure have the potential to serve as both model compounds for corresponding graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and as materials for optoelectronics applications. However, synthesizing molecules of this type with extended π-conjugation presents a significant challenge. In this study, we present a straightforward synthetic method for a series of bis-peri-dinaphtho-rylene molecules, wherein the peri-positions of perylene, quaterrylene, and hexarylene are fused with naphtho-units. These molecules were efficiently synthesized primarily through intramolecular or intermolecular radical coupling of in situ generated organic radical species. Their structures were confirmed using X-ray crystallographic analysis, which also revealed a slightly bent geometry due to the incorporation of a cyclopentadiene ring at the bay regions of the rylene backbones. Bond lengh analysis and theoretical calculations indicate that their electronic structures resemble pyrenacenes more than quinoidal rylenes. That is, the aromatic sextets are predominantly localized along the long axis of the skeletones. As the chain length increases, these molecules exhibit enhanced electronic absorption with a bathochromic shift, and multiple amphoteric redox waves. This study introduces a novel synthetic approach for generating 1D extended PAHs and GNRs, along with their structure-dependent electronic properties.

RESUMO

For quality control of Chinese patent medicines (CPMs) containing the same herbal medicine or different herbal medicines that have similar chemical composition, current ″one standard for one species″ research mode leads to poor universality of the analytical approaches unfavorable to discriminate easily confused species. Herein, we were aimed to elaborate a multiple heart-cutting two-dimensional liquid chromatography/charged aerosol detector (MHC-2DLC/CAD) approach to quantitatively assess ginseng from multiple CPMs. Targeting baseline resolution of 16 ginsenosides (noto-R1/Rg1/Re/Rf/Ra2/Rb1/Rc/Ro/Rb2/Rb3/Rd/Rh1/Rg2/Rg3/Rg3(R)/24(R)-p-F11), experiments were conducted to optimize key parameters and validate its performance. A Poroshell 120 EC-C18 column and an XBridge Shield RP18 column were separately utilized in the first-dimensional (1D) and the second-dimensional (2D) chromatography. Eight consecutive cuttings could achieve good separation of 16 ginsenosides within 85 min. The developed MHC-2DLC/CAD method showed good linearity (R2 > 0.999), repeatability (RSD < 6.73%), stability (RSD < 5.63%), inter- and intra-day precision (RSD < 5.57%), recovery (93.76-111.14%), and the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) varied between 0.45-2.37 ng and 0.96-4.71 ng, respectively. We applied it to the content determination of 16 ginsenosides simultaneously from 28 different ginseng-containing CPMs, which unveiled the ginsenoside content difference among the tested CPMs, and gave useful information to discriminate ginseng in the preparation samples, as well. The MHC-2DLC/CAD approach exhibited advantages of high specificity, good separation ability, and relative high analysis efficiency, which also justified the feasibility of our proposed ″Monomethod Characterization of Structure Analogs″ strategy in quality evaluation of diverse CPMs that contained different ginseng.

RESUMO

To accurately identify the metabolites is crucial in a number of research fields, and discovery of new compounds from the natural products can benefit the development of new drugs. However, the preferable phytochemistry or liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry approach is time-/labor-extensive or receives unconvincing identifications. Herein, we presented a strategy, by integrating offline two-dimensional liquid chromatography/ion mobility-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (2D-LC/IM-QTOF-MS), exclusion list-containing high-definition data-dependent acquisition (HDDDA-EL), and quantitative structure-retention relationship (QSRR) prediction of the retention time (tR), to facilitate the in-depth and more reliable identification of herbal components and thus to discover new compounds more efficiently. Using the saponins in Panax quinquefolius flower (PQF) as a case, high orthogonality (0.79) in separating ginsenosides was enabled by configuring the XBridge Amide and CSH C18 columns. HDDDA-EL could improve the coverage in MS2 acquisition by 2.26 folds compared with HDDDA (2933 VS 1298). Utilizing 106 reference compounds, an accurate QSRR prediction model (R2 = 0.9985 for the training set and R2 = 0.88 for the validation set) was developed based on Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM), by which the predicted tR matching could significantly reduce the isomeric candidates identification for unknown ginsenosides. Isolation and establishment of the structures of two malonylginsenosides by NMR partially verified the practicability of the integral strategy. By these efforts, 421 ginsenosides were identified or tentatively characterized, and 284 thereof were not ever reported from the Panax species. The current strategy is thus powerful in the comprehensive metabolites characterization and rapid discovery of new compounds from the natural products.

RESUMO

Modern baleen whales are unique as large-sized filter feeders, but their roles were replicated much earlier by diverse marine reptiles of the Mesozoic. Here, we investigate convergence in skull morphology between modern baleen whales and one of the earliest marine reptiles, the basal ichthyosauromorph Hupehsuchus nanchangensis, from the Early Triassic, a time of rapid recovery of life following profound mass extinction. Two new specimens reveal the skull morphology especially in dorsal view. The snout of Hupehsuchus is highly convergent with modern baleen whales, as shown in a morphometric analysis including 130 modern aquatic amniotes. Convergences in the snout include the unfused upper jaw, specialized intermediate space in the divided premaxilla and grooves around the labial margin. Hupehsuchus had enlarged its buccal cavity to enable efficient filter feeding and probably used soft tissues like baleen to expel the water from the oral cavity. Coordinated with the rigid trunk and pachyostotic ribs suggests low speeds of aquatic locomotion, Hupehsuchus probably employed continuous ram filter feeding as in extant bowhead and right whales. The Early Triassic palaeoenvironment of a restrictive lagoon with low productivity drove Hupehsuchus to feed on zooplankton, which facilitated ecosystem recovery in the Nanzhang-Yuan'an Fauna at the beginning of the Mesozoic.

RESUMO

Spent mushroom substrate (SMS) is the by-products of mushroom production, which is mainly composed of disintegrated lignocellulosic biomass, mushroom mycelia and some minerals. The huge output and the lack of effective utilization methods make SMS becoming a serious environmental problem. In order to improve the application of SMS and SMS derived biochar (SBC), composted SMS (CSMS), SBC, combined plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR, Bacillus subtilis BUABN-01 and Arthrobacter pascens BUAYN-122) and SBC immobilized PGPR (BCP) were applied in the lettuce seedling. Seven substrate treatments were used, including (1) CK, commercial control; (2) T1, CSMS based blank control; (3) T2, T1 with combined PGPR (9:1, v/v); (4) T3, T1 with SBC (19:1, v/v); (5) T4, T1 with SBC (9:1, v/v); (6) T5, T1 with BCP (19:1, v/v); (7) T6, T1 with BCP (9:1, v/v). The physicochemical properties of substrate, agronomic and physicochemical properties of lettuce and rhizospheric bacterial and fungal communities were investigated. The addition of SBC and BCP significantly (p < 0.05) improved the total nitrogen and available potassium content. The 5% (v/v) BCP addiction treatment (T5) represented the highest fresh weight of aboveground and underground, leave number, chlorophyll content and leaf anthocyanin content, and the lowest root malondialdehyde content. Moreover, high throughput sequencing revealed that the biochar immobilization enhanced the adaptability of PGPR. The addition of PGPR, SBC and BCP significantly enriched the unique bacterial biomarkers. The co-occurrence network analysis revealed that 5% BCP greatly increased the network complexity of rhizospheric microorganisms and improved the correlations of the two PGPR with other microorganisms. Furthermore, microbial functional prediction indicated that BCP enhanced the nutrient transport of rhizospheric microorganisms. This study showed the BCP can increase the agronomic properties of lettuce and improve the rhizospheric microbial community.

RESUMO

Ginseng extracts are extensively used as raw materials for food supplements and herbal medicines. This study aimed to characterize ginsenosides obtained from six Panax plant extracts (Panax ginseng, red ginseng, Panax quinquefolius, Panax notoginseng, Panax japonicus, and Panax japonicus var. major) and compared them with their in vitro metabolic profiles mediated by rat intestinal microbiota. Ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography/ion mobility-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC/IM-QTOF-MS) with scheduled multiple reaction monitoring (sMRM) quantitation methods were developed to characterize and compare the ginsenoside composition of the different extracts. After in vitro incubation, 248 ginsenosides/metabolites were identified by UHPLC/IM-QTOF-MS in six biotransformed samples. Deglycosylation was determined to be the main metabolic pathway of ginsenosides, and protopanaxadiol-type and oleanolic acid-type saponins were easier to be easily metabolized. Compared with the ginsenosides in plant extracts, those remaining in six biotransformed samples were considerably fewer after biotransformation for 8 h. However, the compositional differences in four subtypes of the ginsenosides among the six Panax plants became more distinct.

RESUMO

The research on aromaticity has mainly focused on monocyclic [n]annulene-like systems or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. For fully π-conjugated multicyclic macrocycles (MMCs), the electronic coupling between the individual constitutional macrocycles would lead to unique electronic structures and aromaticity. The studies on MMCs, however, are quite limited, presumably due to the great challenges to design and synthesize a fully π-conjugated MMC molecule. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of two MMCs (2TMC and 3TMC) in which two and three thiophene-based macrocycles are fused together by employing both intramolecular and intermolecular Yamamoto coupling reactions of a properly designed precursor (7). The monocyclic macrocycle (1TMC) was also synthesized as a model compound. The geometry, aromaticity, and electronic properties of these macrocycles at different oxidation states were investigated by X-ray crystallographic analysis, NMR, and theoretical calculations, which disclosed how the constitutional macrocycles interplay with each other and lead to unique aromatic/antiaromatic character. This study provides new insights into the complex aromaticity in MMC systems.

RESUMO

Large graphene-like molecules with four zigzag edges are ideal gain medium materials for organic near-infrared (NIR) lasers. However, synthesizing them becomes increasingly challenging as the molecular size increases. In this study, we introduce a new intramolecular radical-radical coupling approach and successfully synthesize two fused triangulene dimers (1 a/1 b) efficiently. X-ray crystallographic analysis of 1 a indicates that there is no intermolecular π-π stacking in the solid state. When the more soluble derivative 1 b is dispersed in polystyrene thin films, amplified spontaneous emission in the NIR region is observed. Using 1 b as the active gain material, we fabricate solution-processed distributed feedback lasers that exhibit a narrow emission linewidth at around 790 nm. The laser devices also exhibit low thresholds with high photostability. Our study provides a new synthetic strategy for extended nanographenes, which have diverse applications in electronics and photonics.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to analyze the carbon sink effect under natural vegetation restoration and the influence of changes in vegetation community characteristics on ecosystem carbon density in ecologically fragile areas of the Loess Plateau. In this study, the changes in carbon sequestration of a vegetation-soil system under eight successional stages[slope cropland, abandoned cropland for 10 years, abandoned cropland for 20 years, Sophora davidii (Franch.) Skeels., Betula platyphylla Suk., Pinus tabulaeformis Carr., Quercus wutaishanic Mary+P. tabulaeformis Carr mixed forests, and Q. wutaishanic Mary] in Ziwuling area over 150 restoration periods were investigated using the common method of spatial and temporal substitution. This study also discussed the relationship between changes in vegetation community characteristics and vegetation-soil system carbon density. The results showed that the community coverage of the investigated vegetation fluctuated from 85% in the slope cropland stage to 100% in the arbor stage. The number of species, Margalef index, Shannon-Wiener index, Pielou index, and Simpson index initially increased rapidly, then declined slowly until becoming stable, and reached a peak in the middle of the succession (B. platyphylla Suk.). The biomass and carbon density of vegetation components (above-ground biomass, below-ground roots, and litter) increased exponentially during the succession, i.e., increased slowly before B. platyphylla Suk. but increased significantly in B. platyphylla Suk. and P. tabulaeformis Carr.(P<0.05). The biomass and carbon density reached the maximum values of 27858.08 g·m-2 and 13232.51 g·m-2, respectively, in Q. wutaishanic Mary+P. tabulaeformis Carr mixed forests and tended to be stable in the late succession stage. Soil organic carbon density showed a power function relationship with vegetation restoration, with the greatest increase in the stages of abandoned cropland for 10 years and B. platyphylla, but no significant changes in the subsequent stages (P>0.05). In the early succession stage, the carbon density of the farmland ecosystem was the lowest (4395.70 g·m-2), whereas the other seven stages increased by 55.54%, 40.37%, 69.96%, 202.48%, 326.35%, 357.43%, and 351.07%, respectively, compared with the farmland ecosystem. Community coverage, Margalef index, Shannon-Wiener index, above-ground biomass, root biomass, and litter biomass were significantly positively correlated with vegetation-soil system carbon density (P<0.05). The carbon sink effect of long-term natural restoration in Ziwuling Region was significant, and the carbon density of the vegetation-soil system under interspecific competition tended to be stable in the late succession stage. Dynamic changes in the vegetation community structure and plant diversity during the succession process increased vegetation carbon density and soil carbon density. This study helps to clarify the carbon sink effect of natural vegetation restoration in ecologically fragile areas of the Loess Plateau and provides a theoretical basis for promoting natural forest conservation and achieving carbon neutrality.

RESUMO

Circumcoronene, a hexagonal graphene fragment with six zigzag edges, has been the focus of theoretical studies for many years, but its synthesis in solution has remained a challenge. In this study, we present a facile method for synthesizing three derivatives of circumcoronene using Brønsted/Lewis acid-mediated cyclization of vinyl ether or alkyne. Their structures were confirmed through X-ray crystallographic analysis. Bond length analysis, NMR measurement, and theoretical calculations showed that circumcoronene mostly follows Clar's bonding model and exhibits dominant local aromaticity. Its absorption and emission spectra are similar to those of the smaller hexagonal coronene due to its six-fold symmetry.

RESUMO

Background: Thalassemia is a hereditary blood disease resulting from globin chain synthesis impairment because of α- and/or ß-globin gene variants. α-thalassemia is characterized by non-deletional and deletional variants in the HBA gene locus, of which rare deletional variants are difficult to detect by conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based methods. Case report: We report the case of a one-month-old boy, who and his mother had abnormal hematological parameters, while his father had normal hematology. Conventional PCR-reverse dot blot (RDB) was performed for all family members to analyze the 23 most common thalassemia variants in China, but did not identify any pathologic variants. Single-molecule real-time (SMRT) long-read sequencing (LRS) technology was then performed and identified an unreported 14.9-kb large deletion (hg38 chr16:168,803-183,737) of the α-globin gene locus, which disrupted both HBA1 and HBA2 genes in the proband and his mother. The exact breakpoints of the deletion were confirmed by gap-PCR and Sanger sequencing. Conclusion: We have detected a novel large deletion in α-globin gene locus in China, which not only enriches the variant spectrum of thalassemia, but also demonstrates the accuracy and efficiency of LRS in detecting rare and novel deletions.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Liver tumor remains an important cause of cancer-related death. Nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs) are advantageous in the treatment of melanoma and pancreatic cancer, but their therapeutic application on liver tumors need to be further studied. METHODS: Hep3B cells were treated with nsPEFs. The biological behaviors of cells were detected by Cell Counting Kit-8, 5-ethynyl-20-deoxyuridine, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) assays. In vivo, rabbit VX2 liver tumor models were ablated by ultrasound-guided nsPEFs and radiofrequency ablation (RFA). Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) was used to evaluate the ablation effect. HE staining and Masson staining were used to evaluate the tissue morphology after ablation. Immunohistochemistry was performed to determine the expression of Ki67, proliferating cell nuclear antigen, and α-smooth muscle actin at different time points after ablation. RESULTS: The cell viability of Hep3B cells was continuously lower than that of the control group within 3 days after pulse treatment. The proliferation of Hep3B cells was significantly affected by nsPEFs. TEM showed that Hep3B cells underwent significant morphological changes after pulse treatment. In vivo, CEUS imaging showed that nsPEFs could completely ablate model rabbit VX2 liver tumors. After nsPEFs ablation, the area of tumor fibrosis and the expression of Ki67, proliferating cell nuclear antigen, and α-smooth muscle actin were decreased. However, after RFA, rabbit VX2 liver tumor tissue showed complete necrosis, but the expression of PCNA and α-smooth muscle actin did not decrease compared to the tumor group. CONCLUSIONS: nsPEFs can induce Hep3B cells apoptosis and ablate rabbit VX2 liver tumors in a non-thermal manner versus RFA. The ultrasound contrast agent can monitor immediate effect of nsPEF ablation. This study provides a basis for the clinical study of nsPEFs ablation of liver cancer.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To test the feasibility of objective assessments using the TekScan MatScan pressure mat plantar pressure measurement as a time-effective screening service for Parkinson disease (PD) with and without freezing of gait (FOG) history. DESIGN: Prospective cross-sectional study. SETTING: Largest medical center in southern Taiwan. INTERVENTIONS: Not applicable. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Plantar pressure measurements including average peak pressure (PP), contact area (CA), and pressure-time integral (PTI) in static and dynamic conditions as well as clinical scores during off-medication states. PARTICIPANTS: A total of 103 patients with PD and 22 age- and sex-matched volunteers without PD (N=125). RESULTS: Plantar pressure assessment including PP, CA, and PTI on the total foot areas between participants with PD and controls without PD in the static conditions are similar. Patients with PD presented higher PTI on total foot areas as well as hallux, midfoot area, and medial and lateral heels during dynamic conditions than controls without PD. The PP, CA, and PTI during the static condition and CA during the dynamic condition on the hallux showed statistical significance between PD with and without FOG history. Stepwise logistic regression after controlling with age and body mass index showed only PTI on hallux (static conditions) was significantly associated with the presence of FOG. The receiver operating characteristic curve analysis in diagnostic accuracy for FOG in PTI was statistically significant (P=.002; area under the curve, 0.71). CONCLUSIONS: FOG screening using the TekScan MatScan pressure mat plantar pressure measurement could serve as a time-effective screening service at the outpatient clinic. Based on our study, PTI may be valuable in auxiliary diagnosis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Due to the high prevalence of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in China, the incidence of HCC in China is high, and liver cirrhosis caused by chronic hepatitis also brings great challenges to treatment. This paper reviewed the latest research progress on minimally invasive treatments for HCC, including percutaneous thermal ablation and new nonthermal ablation techniques, and introduced the principles, advantages, and clinical applications of various therapeutic methods in detail. DATA SOURCES: The data of treatments for HCC were systematically collected from the PubMed, ScienceDirect, American Chemical Society and Web of Science databases published in English, using "minimally invasive" and "hepatocellular carcinoma" or "liver cancer" as the keywords. RESULTS: Percutaneous thermal ablation is still a first-line strategy for the minimally invasive treatment of HCC. The effect of microwave ablation (MWA) on downgrading treatment before liver transplantation is better than that of radiofrequency ablation (RFA), while RFA is more widely used in the clinical practice. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is mainly used for the palliative treatment of advanced liver cancer. Electrochemotherapy (ECT) delivers chemotherapeutic drugs to the target cells while reducing the blood supply around HCC. Irreversible electroporation (IRE) uses a microsecond-pulsed electric field that induces apoptosis and necrosis and triggers a systemic immune response. The nanosecond pulsed electric field (nsPEF) has achieved a good response in the ablation of mice with HCC, but it has not been reported in China for the treatment of human HCC. CONCLUSIONS: A variety of minimally invasive treatments provide a sufficient survival advantage for HCC patients. Nonthermal ablation will lead to a new wave with its unique advantage of antitumor recurrence and metastasis.
