Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) confined concrete is regarded as an innovative and economical approach for structural repairation. Two typical materials [carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP)] are selected in this study to investigate the concrete strengthen effect in a severe environment. The resist ability of FRP-confined concrete is discussed when subjected to coupled erosion between sulfate erosion and freeze-thaw cycles. Electron microscopy examines concrete's surface and interior degradation during coupled erosion. The corrosion degree and principle of sodium sulfate are analyzed using pH, SEM electron microscope, and EDS energy spectrum. The axial compressive strength test is used to evaluate the reinforcement of the FRP-confined concrete column, and the stress-strain relationship for various FRP-confined techniques in a coupled erosion environment is obtained. The error analysis is performed to calibrate the experimental test result using four existed prediction models. All observations indicate that the deterioration process of FRP-confined concrete is complicated and dynamic under coupled effect. Sodium sulfate initially increases the initial strength of concrete. However, subsequent freeze-thaw cycles may aggravate concrete fractures, while sodium sulfate further degrades the strength of concrete through the cracking development. A precise numerical model is presented to simulate the stress-strain relationship, which is critical for the design and life cycle assessment of FRP-confined concrete.

Cementitious materials can be reinforced by adding different fibers. However, the effect of different fiber reinforcements on the mechanical properties of cement-based materials remains to be further studied. This paper studies the influencing factors of different fiber cement-based materials by combining experimental and theoretical methods. The tests used carbon fiber, glass fiber, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber-reinforced cement-based materials. The addition ratios of fibers are 0%, 0.5%, and 1% by volume respectively. The compressive strength, bending strength, and drying shrinkage are studied for 3 to 28 d. The relationship between bending strength, compressive strength, dosage, and shrinkage is analyzed. The test results show that carbon fiber cement-based materials' bending, and compressive strength increase the fastest, followed by glass and PVA fibers. The presented mathematical model accurately predicted the strength of the three fiber cement-based materials at different curing times. Compared to glass fiber and PVA fiber, carbon fiber shrinks less. It can be shown that the fiber significantly affects the early strength change of the fiber cement-based material by changing the shrinkage size of the fiber-cement-based material. The bending strength of carbon fiber, glass fiber, and PVA fiber increases with the increase of fiber volume fraction. On the other hand, the compressive strength increases and then decreases. Mechanical tests show that carbon fiber has the best reinforcement effect. The number of fibers, center spacing, and ultimate tensile length are all important factors that affect the strength of different fiber cement-based materials. Moreover, applied ABAQUS software established compression and bending finite element models of fiber-cement composites. It can predict the mechanical performance concerning fiber cement-based materials' different types and volume fractions.

BACKGROUND: The seminar-case learning (SCL) method is a case-oriented teaching model, with teachers and students as the main body of teaching, characterized by communication, interaction, and mutual inspiration. This study explored the effects of the SCL method versus traditional lecture-based learning (LBL) in the statistics curriculum for undergraduate students majoring in preventive medicine. Research questions were: 1) whether the scores of students in the experimental group (the SCL model) were higher than those in the control group (the LBL model); 2) whether the students' satisfaction in the experimental group was better than that in the control group; and 3) whether the self-report benefit of students in the experimental group was better than that in the control group. METHODS: We conducted a two-armed cluster-randomized education intervention trial in practice teaching of health statistics among undergraduates majoring in preventive medicine. Two administrative classes (classes 1-4 and classes 5-8) were divided into the experimental group and the control group according to the principle of drawing lots. The students in two groups received the same statistical theory course. For the arrangement of statistical practice course, the experimental group adopted the SCL model, and the control group used the LBL model. The teaching effect was evaluated via an examination and an anonymous questionnaire survey. RESULTS: Scores for noun explanation questions in the experimental group showed no statistical significance with that of the control group(U = 2911.0, P = 0.964). The scores of single choice, calculation, and case analysis questions, and the total scores were significantly higher than that of the control group (P < 0.05). Students' satisfaction with arrangements of the practice course in the experimental group (92.41%) was significantly higher than that of in the control group (77.03%), the difference was statistically significant (χ2 = 7.074, P = 0.008). The self-report benefit of students in the experimental group was better than that in the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: As an effective method of high-quality education, the SCL model is worthy of further promotion in the practice teaching of preventive medicine.

Fibers used as reinforcement can increase the mechanical characteristics of engineering cementitious composites (ECC), but their frost resistance has received less attention. The mechanical properties of various fiber cementitious materials under the dual factors of freeze-thaw action and fiber dose are yet to be determined. This study examines the performance change patterns of cementitious composites, which contain carbon fiber, glass fiber, and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber at 0%, 0.5%, and 1% volume admixture in freeze-thaw tests. Three fiber cement-based materials are selected to do the compression and bending testing, and ABAQUS finite element modeling is used to assess the performance of fiber cement-based composite materials. The microscopic observation results show that the dispersion of glass and PVA fibers is higher than that of carbon fibers. As a result, the mechanical characteristics of the fiber-doped cementitious composites increase dramatically after freeze-thaw with increasing dosage. The compression test results show the frost resistance of carbon fiber > PVA fiber > glass fiber. In addition, the bending test results show the frost resistance of carbon fiber > glass fiber > PVA fiber. The 3D surface plots of the strength changes are established to observe the mechanical property changes under the coupling effect of admixture and freeze-thaw times. ABAQUS modeling is used to predict the strength of the cementitious composites under various admixtures and freeze-thaw cycles. The bending strength numerical equation is presented, and the bending and compressive strengths of three different fiber-cement matrix materials are accurately predicted.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension in children and adolescents is on the rise worldwide, especially in China. The prevalence of hypertension is related to many factors, such as obesity. In the era of smart phones, it is important to study the negative health effects of mobile phones on blood pressure. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of hypertension and its association with smartphone addiction among junior school students in China. METHODS: A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted, including total 2639 junior school students (1218 boys and 1421 girls), aged 12-15 years old (13.18 ± 0.93 years), enrolled in the study by random cluster sampling. Height, weight, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were measured following standard protocols, and the body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Overweight/obesity and hypertension were defined according to sex- and age-specific Chinese children reference data. The Smartphone Addiction Scale short version (SAS-SV) and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used to assess smartphone addiction and sleep quality among the students, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to seek associations between smartphone addiction and hypertension. RESULTS: The prevalence of hypertension and smartphone addiction among participants were 16.2% (13.1% for females and 18.9% for males) and 22.8% (22.3% for females and 23.2% for males), respectively. Obesity (OR = 4.028, 95% CI: 2.829-5.735), poor sleep quality (OR = 4.243, 95% CI: 2.429-7.411), smartphone addiction (OR = 2.205, 95% CI: 1.273-3.820) were significantly and independently associated with hypertension. CONCLUSIONS: Among the junior school students surveyed in China, the prevalence of hypertension was high, which was related to obesity, poor sleep quality and smartphone addiction. These results suggested that smartphone addiction may be a new risk factor for high blood pressure in adolescents.

Prenatal caffeine exposure (PCE) can induce testicular developmental toxicity. Here, we aimed to explore the underlying mechanism of this process in reference to its intrauterine origin. Pregnant rats were intragastrically administrated caffeine (30 and 120 mg/kg/day) from gestational days 9 to 20. The results showed that the male fetuses exposed to high dose of caffeine (120 mg/kg/day) had a decreased bodyweight and inhibited testosterone synthetic function. Meanwhile, their serum corticosterone concentration was elevated and their testicular insulin-like growth factor 1 (Igf1) expression was decreased. Moreover, the histone 3 lysine 14 acetylation (H3K14ac) level in the Igf1 promoter region was reduced. Low-dose (30 mg/kg/day) caffeine exposure, however, increased steroidogenic enzymes expression in male fetuses. After birth, the serum corticosterone concentration gradually decreased in the PCE (120 mg/kg/day) offspring rats, whereas the expression and H3K14ac level of Igf1 gradually increased, with obvious catch-up growth and testicular development compensation. Intriguingly, when we subjected the offspring to 2 weeks of chronic stress to elevate the serum corticosterone concentration, the expression of Igf1 and testosterone synthesis were inhibited again in the PCE (120 mg/kg/day) group, accompanied by a decrease in the H3K14ac level in the Igf1 promoter region. In vitro, corticosterone (rather than caffeine) was proved to inhibit testosterone production in Leydig cells by altering the H3K14ac level and the expression of Igf1. These observations suggested that PCE-induced testicular developmental toxicity is related to the negative regulation of corticosterone on H3K14ac levels and the expression of Igf1.

Prenatal ethanol exposure (PEE) could affect offspring's testicular development. This study aimed to illuminate its intrauterine origin and the programming mechanism caused by PEE. Pregnant Wistar rats were given ethanol (4 g/kg.d) by gavage administration during gestational days (GD) 9-20. Serum samples and testes of male offspring rats were collected on GD20, postnatal week (PW) 6, and PW12. We found that PEE induced testicular morphological abnormality, low serum testosterone levels, expressive suppression of 3ß-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3ß-HSD), and low acetylation levels of histone 3 lysine 14 (H3K14ac) of 3ß-HSD before and after birth. In utero, when fetal rats were overexposed to corticosterone by PEE, the expression levels of testicular glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and histone deacetylase 2 (HDAC2) were increased, while that of steroidogenic factor 1 (SF1) was decreased. In vitro, corticosterone (rather than ethanol) at 500 to 2,000 nM concentration decreased testosterone production and 3ß-HSD expression in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, corticosterone downregulated SF1 and upregulated HDAC2 via activating GR, accompanied by a low H3K14ac level of 3ß-HSD; SF1 overexpression could reverse the increased HDAC2 expression, and knockdown of HDAC2 could partially reverse the inhibitory effects of corticosterone on H3K14ac level and 3ß-HSD expression but not on SF1 expression. Taken together, PEE caused testicular dysplasia in male offspring rats, which was associated with corticosterone-induced low-functional programming of 3ß-HSD through the GR/SF1/HDAC2/H3K14ac pathway. This study provides new academic perspectives to illuminate the theory of 'Developmental Origins of Health and Disease.'

We theoretically investigate the strong coupling phenomenon between a quasi-single molecule and a plasmonic cavity based on the blue-detuned trapping system. The trapping system is made up of a metallic nanohole array. A finite-difference time-domain method is employed to simulate the system, and the molecule is treated as a dipole in simulations. By calculating the electromagnetic field distributions, we obtain the best position for trapping a molecule, and we get the strong coupling phenomenon that there are two splitting peaks in the transmission spectrum when the molecule is trapped in the structure, while only one peak is observed in the one without the molecule. We also find that only when the molecule polarization parallels to the incident light wave vector can we observe a strong coupling phenomenon.

Prenatal dexamethasone exposure (PDE) could induce testicular developmental toxicity in adults. The present study aims to confirm its intrauterine origination, and to explore its potential intrauterine programming mechanism. The pregnant rats were respectively injected subcutaneously with 0.2 and 0.8 mg/kg d dexamethasone during gestational days (GD) 9 to 20. The testes and serum of offspring rats were collected on GD20 and postnatal week (PW) 12. In vivo, PDE significantly induced the abnormal testicular morphology in offspring from GD20 to PW12. Moreover, the serum and intratesticular testosterone levels and the expression of testicular steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) were reduced by PDE. The expression levels of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and histone deacetylase 7 (HDAC7) were increased in fetal testes. Furthermore, the histone 3 lysine 9 acetylation (H3K9ac) level in the StAR promoter was decreased by PDE from GD20 to PW12. In vitro, mouse Leydig tumour cell line (MLTC-1) cells were treated with dexamethasone (20, 100 and 500 nM), and the testosterone production and StAR expression were reduced. Moreover, dexamethasone increased the expression of HDAC7 by activating GR, which decreased the H3K9ac level in the StAR promoter. Taken together, PDE caused testicular dysplasia before and after birth in male offspring rats, and its mechanism was related to the low-expressional programming of StAR mediated by decreasing H3K9ac level.

BACKGROUND: Trans-fatty acids (TFAs) occur in small amounts in nature but became widely produced by the food industry. The hazardous effects of different TFA subtypes to human health are controversial. We aimed to evaluate the association of plasma TFAs levels (elaidic acid, vaccenic acid, palmitelaidic acid, and linoelaidic acid) with mortality. METHODS: Utilizing 1999-2000 Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and linked mortality data, we performed a cohort study with 1456 participants and used Cox proportional hazards models and penalized smoothing spline plots to elucidate the relationships between TFAs and all-cause, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and cancer mortality. RESULTS: During 16,034 person-years of follow-up, a total of 221 deaths occurred. In the multivariate model, including mutual adjustment for the 4 TFA subtypes, elaidic acid associated with higher all-cause mortality (hazard ratio (HR) = 2.00, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.18 to 3.40, fourth quartiles versus second quartiles) and CVD mortality (HR = 1.64, 95% CI = 1.07 to 2.50, per 10 units increase). Higher palmitelaidic acid levels were associated with increased cancer mortality (HR = 2.91, 95% CI = 1.09 to 7.81, fourth quartiles versus second quartiles). A J-shaped pattern was observed in the regression curve of elaidic acid and all-cause mortality, as well palmitelaidic acid and cancer mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Plasma elaidic acid levels are associated with higher risk of all-cause and CVD mortality, and palmitelaidic acid levels are associated with higher cancer mortality in later life. Further studies are needed to investigate current inconsistent results in this field and the possible underlying mechanisms.

Conventional three-dimensional (3D) structure determination methods require either multiple measurements at different sample orientations or a collection of serial sections through a sample. Here we report the experimental demonstration of single-shot 3D structure determination of an object; in this case, individual gold nanocrystals at ~5.5 nm resolution using ~10 fs X-ray free-electron laser pulses. Coherent diffraction patterns are collected from high-index-faceted nanocrystals, each struck by an X-ray free-electron laser pulse. Taking advantage of the symmetry of the nanocrystal and the curvature of the Ewald sphere, we reconstruct the 3D structure of each nanocrystal from a single-shot diffraction pattern. By averaging a sufficient number of identical nanocrystals, this method may be used to determine the 3D structure of nanocrystals at atomic resolution. As symmetry exists in many virus particles, this method may also be applied to 3D structure studies of such particles at nanometer resolution on femtosecond time scales.

Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) is high-resolution lensless microscopy that has been applied to image a wide range of specimens using synchrotron radiation, X-ray free-electron lasers, high harmonic generation, soft X-ray lasers and electrons. Despite recent rapid advances, it remains a challenge to reconstruct fine features in weakly scattering objects such as biological specimens from noisy data. Here an effective iterative algorithm, termed oversampling smoothness (OSS), for phase retrieval of noisy diffraction intensities is presented. OSS exploits the correlation information among the pixels or voxels in the region outside of a support in real space. By properly applying spatial frequency filters to the pixels or voxels outside the support at different stages of the iterative process (i.e. a smoothness constraint), OSS finds a balance between the hybrid input-output (HIO) and error reduction (ER) algorithms to search for a global minimum in solution space, while reducing the oscillations in the reconstruction. Both numerical simulations with Poisson noise and experimental data from a biological cell indicate that OSS consistently outperforms the HIO, ER-HIO and noise robust (NR)-HIO algorithms at all noise levels in terms of accuracy and consistency of the reconstructions. It is expected that OSS will find application in the rapidly growing CDI field, as well as other disciplines where phase retrieval from noisy Fourier magnitudes is needed.
