RESUMO

The time-efficient nature of HIIT using bodyweight exercises can facilitate the application of exercise programs at home by encouraging more people to perform regular physical exercise. However, there are no studies investigating the influence of the distribution/order of exercises during HIIT training sessions using this method. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of different exercise orders on training load indicators during HIIT sessions using body weight. Twenty male participants performed three 20-min sessions of HIIT using whole body exercise, consisting of 20 sets with 30 s of activity performed at maximal intensity, followed by 30 s of passive recovery. Three designs of exercise protocols were randomly performed according to the following exercise distribution: A: jumping jack, burpee, mountain climb and squat jump); B: jumping jack, mountain climb, burpee, and squat jump) and C: burpee, squat jump, jumping jack and mountain climb. No differences were found between protocols for relative heart rate, perceived exertion, and lactate concentrations. Significant differences (p < 0.001) were found for the number of movements (A:712 ± 59, B:524 ± 49, C:452 ± 65). No differences were observed for the area under curve when examining perceived exertion between protocols. However, the values for perceived recovery significantly differed (p < 0.001) between protocols (A:64 ± 19; B:52 ± 11; C:17 ± 13). Interestingly, protocol B and C induced a displeasure perception compared to protocol A. Our findings suggest that exercise distribution/order using HIIT whole body exercise promotes alterations in psychophysiological responses in HIIT using whole body exercises.

PURPOSE: The effects of medium to long-term continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or physical activity in decreasing oxidative stress, inflammatory, and cell-free DNA markers in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) have been explored. Here we evaluate oxidative stress markers (TBARS, AOPP, SOD), proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-8), anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IL-10), and cell-free DNA levels before and after 8-week CPAP treatment or moderate-intensity aerobic training in moderate to severe OSA. METHODS: Thirty-nine patients diagnosed with OSA were randomly divided into CPAP (N = 18), with or without humidifier, and exercise groups (N = 21). Excessive daytime sleepiness and sleep quality were assessed by the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and the Pittsburgh questionnaire, respectively. Biomarkers for lipid and protein oxidation, pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines, and cell-free DNA were quantified in blood samples, before and after 8 weeks of both treatments. RESULTS: After 8 weeks of either CPAP or exercise, no significant differences were observed in the levels of cell-free DNA, oxidative stress, and inflammation markers, except for an increase in AOPP and IL-17A levels in individuals who went through CPAP, which were higher when the CPAP device was used without the humidifier. We have also observed that CPAP significantly decreased the Pittsburgh scores and improved sleep efficiency and hours of sleep, while ESS scores remained unaffected. CONCLUSIONS: Short-term treatment for OSA, be it CPAP therapy or moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, was not sufficient to alter either the oxidative stress and inflammatory profiles or the cell-free DNA levels of moderate to severe OSA patients. Short-term CPAP did, however, improve self-reported sleep quality.

BACKGROUND: OxyElite Pro (OEP) is a dietary supplement to increase metabolism which contains as key stimulant the ingredient 1,3-dimethylamylamine (DMAA). Serious adverse effects have been reported after OEP consumption however, these effects are related to poisoning or overdose. To our knowledge, no one studied the effects of OEP at controlled doses. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate acute and chronic OEP affects, at controlled doses in Wistar rats, on physical performance, metabolic parameters, liver injury markers and oxidative stress markers and mitochondrial biogenesis in skeletal muscle. METHODS: Rats were divided in control, 4.3 mg OEP/kg, 12.9 mg OEP/kg and 25.8 mg OEP/kg. All groups were submitted to supplementation with OEP for 4 weeks and the experimental protocols were performed 30 min after the first OEP administration (acute response) and 30 min after the last OEP administration at the end of the forth week (chronic response). RESULTS: Running distance and running time increased after acute administration of 12.9 mg OEP/kg (2.6-fold) and 25.8 mg OEP/kg (2.8-fold). Since no effect on the exercise tolerance test was observed at the lower OEP dose (4.3 mg OEP/kg), this group was removed from further analyzes. On other hand, running distance and running time decreased after daily supplementation for 4 weeks also in both groups (64% in 12.9 mg OEP/kg and 72% in 25.8 mg OEP/kg). Chronic supplementation at both 12.9 and 25.8 mg OEP/kg decreased TBARS levels in soleus muscle (36 and 31%) and liver (43 and 25%). AOPP was also decreased by both doses in the liver (39 and 45%). Chronic administration of the highest dose, 25.8 mg OEP/kg, was able to reduce mRNA expression of PGC-1α in soleus muscle (25%). No effect was found in other analyses such as spontaneous physical activity, body weight, food and water intake, hepatic toxicity, cardiac oxidative stress and mitochondrial DNA amount. CONCLUSION: Maximum and not recommended doses of OEP ingested acutely presented stimulating effect on the ability to exercise. However, its daily consumption for 4 weeks showed antioxidant effects in soleus muscle and liver which may have decreased the PGC-1α mRNA expression on soleus muscle and contributed to the impaired performance in the exercise tolerance test.
