RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to identify and analyze the tendencies and types of studies published in Brazil and abroad, involving elders aged>80 years, living in the community. A systematic review of national literature was performed using the LILACS and SciELO databases, and PUBMED and EMBASE for international literature, covering publications of the last two decades. Twelve national and 162 international references were selected. Biological sciences were the prevalent area both at the national (50%) and international (74.1%) levels. All national studies were observational, 91.7% of which were cross-sectional. Of the international studies, 93.3% were observational, 48.1% of which were cross-sectional and 37.6% were cohort studies. The United States were the country responsible for 41.4% of all international publications. Brazil and China were the only developing countries with international publications. Despite the significant number of international scientific publications as of 2005, this fact has not been observed at the national level.

RESUMO

Study conducted with secondary data from cross-sectional population-based studies developed in three regions of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), which aimed to compare the level of dependency for activities of daily living (ADL) of 155 older persons aged 80 years and over. Demographic data and the ADL scale from the 3 studies were used and a multinomial multivariate logistic regression analysis was carried out. The older persons from the urban region of Porto Alegre/RS and from the Northern region of this state presented significantly higher severe dependency than people from the countryside. The results illustrate the heterogeneity of the aging process. Health policies and actions should be planned for the elder elderly in this state.

RESUMO

Cross-sectional study, conducted with 34 elder people from a rural community of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, in 2008. The objective is to evaluate their functional capacity and to compare interest variables between sexes. The household survey addressed social, economic and demographic variables, aspects related to health/disease, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and the Scale of Activities of Daily Living (ADL) of the Older American Resources and Services (OARS). Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. Compared to men, women were more likely to be more educated, have less community activities, have similar MEEM scores, worst health perception and were more dependent to perform ADL. The peculiarities of rural elder persons are highlighted, as well the need to tailor actions to promote their adaptability in this context and allow the minimization of disabilities.

RESUMO

This epidemiological and exploratory-descriptive study aimed to identify the socioeconomic and demographic features, as well as the health and disease condition of elderly people from a Family Health Program in Porto Alegre, Brazil, with the purpose of contributing to the planning of health actions for this population. Data from 98 elderly people were collected through a home survey by means of a semistructured instrument. The mean age of the interviewed subjects was 69.5. Sixty-one participants (62.2%) were women; 40 (40.8%) were married and 77 (78.6%) did not have remunerated work. Most men (64.9%) had a companion, against 26.2% of women with a partner. As to health, 80.6% reported suffering from some pathology, especially diseases of the circulatory system, reported by 55.1% of the interviewees. Although the collected data are in line with other studies, knowledge about them is important to adapt health actions by the Family Health Program team under study, in order to offer better care to these elderly people.
