RESUMO

Introduction: Attaining a commendable level of quality in an educational program is not just important but imperative. Hence, this study was undertaken to assess the quality of the general dentistry program for students in Iran, utilizing the comprehensive Context, Input, Process, and Product (CIPP) evaluation model. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out among dentistry students in the 5th to 13th semesters at Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences in Ahvaz, Iran. Data collection for this research utilized a questionnaire designed in alignment with the CIPP Evaluation Model. The perspectives of students were sought in assessing the four domains of context, input, process, and product. Statistical analysis of the data was conducted using ANOVA and T-test methods. Results: The mean scores of the educational program were as fallow: Content (2.76 ± 0.58), input (2.71 ± 0.65), process (2.51 ± 0.68), and product (3.31 ± 0.68). Overall, the quality of dentistry program was undesirable in all dimensions. Among these dimensions, "product" had the highest mean, while "process" had the lowest mean score. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that the general dentistry educational program were Undesirable in all domains. The CIPP evaluation framework assists decision-makers and policymakers in determining the continuation or renewal of a training program by identifying its strengths and weaknesses.

RESUMO

This study was designed to evaluate the concentration of heavy metals (HMs) in the north of Ahvaz, southwest Iran. The soil samples were collected from the agricultural farm and riverside in Karun, for the investigation of the environmental impacts of the selected HMs in the soil of the Weiss and Arab Assad regions. For soil sampling in a period, nine farms were selected from each region, and 10 samples were taken from each agricultural farm. Zoning was done using GIS. The highest of Contamination Factor, Enrichment factor and geo-accumulation index of HMs for Cd (7.84, 73.92 and 2.38), and the lowest value of this index for Cr (0.21, 1.98 and - 2.82), respectively. Furthermore of the farm soil showed that the most toxic effect is related to Cd. The HMs contamination indices of the soil samples showed that the studied HMs had contaminated the agricultural fields. Moreover, the zoning maps of the Co, Cu, Pb and Cr showed that they had not contaminated the soil of wheat fields, but Cd and Zn revealed high contamination levels. The zoning of Ni concentration distribution showed that this metal contamination came from both anthropogenic aspects and geological activities in the region. According to our findings, the EF illustrated high levels of pollution for Cd, Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni, Fe, Mn, Co, and Zn, which seems to be in accordance with the accumulation of agricultural fertilizers (phosphate and nitrate), industrial and human activities in the region.

RESUMO

Heavy metals biomonitoring was performed using the Conocarpus erectus tree in Ahvaz city. Composite leaf and soil samples were collected from 23 selected stations. The concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Fe and Mn) in leaf and soil samples, and bioavailability of metals in soil samples were determined. Examination of soil physicochemical parameters proved neutral to slightly alkaline nature, and low organic matter content in the soil samples. The mean concentration of heavy metals in soil was: Fe > Mn > Zn > Pb > Cu. Ecological risk assessment of heavy metals was in the range of safe to low risk (RI < 150). Although the concentration of metals in the more polluted areas was higher in both leaf and soil samples, there was no significant relationship between the concentrations of metals in the leaf and soil samples. This relationship is even lower between the bioavailable component of metals in the soil and the concentration of metals in the leaves. Transfer factor values based on total contents of metals in soil samples indicated that Conocarpus erectus is mostly contaminated with Zn and Cu. The results of Accumulation factor of plant revealed that Pb, Zn, and Fe were mostly enriched in the plant by anthropogenic activities. MAI values in heavy and light traffic, and industrial areas were 11.88, 8.01 and 8.15, respectively. In general, it is evident that the Conocarpus erectus leaves accumulate heavy metals in polluted areas, so it can be used as a bioindicator of air pollution with heavy metals in regions with similar conditions.

RESUMO

Transmission of fungi in the air and its impact on health are regarded as important public health issues. Bioaerosols play an important role in causing or exacerbating infectious diseases, acute toxic effects, allergies, and cardiopulmonary symptoms. As many people use the public transportation system daily, it is necessary to determine the type and manner of dispersal and abundance of airborne fungi in public transport places. Three public transportation systems including a bus station, a train station, and an airport in Ahvaz city (Iran) were examined. At each of these stations, the air samples were taken from inside and outside the hall stations, and in-vehicle. A bio-stage Anderson sampler was used by suctioning air and passing it over a Petri dish containing culture medium Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA). Relative humidity (RH, %), temperature (T, ◦C), and mass concentration of particulate matter (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10, µg/m3) at the sampling points were measured. The highest concentration of airborne fungi was observed in the airport. The concentration of fungi in the ambient air was higher than that in the indoor air of halls and in-vehicle. In all sampling points, the ambient predominant airborne fungi were Cladosporium and Alternaria, while the indoor predominant airborne fungi were Cladosporium, Aspergillus, and Penicillium. The indoor to outdoor ratio showed that the fungi were of an external origin. Due to the influence of the ambient air on indoor air, it is recommended to use proper ventilation and enhance the hygiene level of vehicles in public transportation systems to reduce exposure to environmentally pathogenic bioaerosols.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Balantidium coli, is a protozoa that can infect humans. Balantidium coli infection is mostly asymptomatic, but can cause of diarrhea, abdominal pain and sometimes perforated colon. There are only few previous reports regarding the infant balantidiasis and there is a little information about its clinical signs and treatment. In Islamic countries pig farming and consumption is prohibited and reservoir host is unknown. METHODS: 1.5 years old boy showed sever anorexia and diarrhea. The affected infant was depressed. The evaluation of fecal examination revealed a large number of B. coli trophozoites and cysts leaded us to an uncommon presentation of B. coli in the infant. RESULTS: A few reports of human balantidiasis from Iran seems quite extraordinary. Wild boars have been proposed the responsible for transmission of human infection in Iran. CONCLUSION: However, this report as the first report of infant balantidiasis in Iran supports the role of other sources and domestic or wild animals as reservoir hosts for B. coli in Iran.

RESUMO

Social vulnerability and society's resilience are two concepts frequently used to examine the capacity of social systems to prepare, absorb, and adapt to environmental hazards and shocks. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the role of social vulnerability in dealing with risks has gained renewed attention. Assessing social vulnerability can help managers and planners prioritize budgets, develop prevention programs, and enhance risk preparedness. This study aimed to determine the association between social vulnerability and COVID-19 in the neighborhoods of Ahvaz, Iran. To assess the social vulnerability of Ahvaz neighborhoods, decision-making techniques (best-worst method and weighted aggregated sum product assessment method) and geographic information systems were applied. Moreover, to investigate the relationship between social vulnerability and COVID-19 cases, the Pearson correlation test was used. The results showed that the '20-meteri shahrdari' neighborhood has the highest level of social vulnerability, and the lowest level of social vulnerability among the neighborhoods of Ahvaz belongs to the neighborhood of 'Shahrak Naft'. There is a low inverse association between the integrated index of social vulnerability and the incidence of COVID-19 per 1000 people in Ahvaz. By revealing the most important details at the neighborhood level and levels of vulnerability, the results can inform effective planning actions at the neighborhood level.

RESUMO

Airborne particulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic size cutoff of 10 µm (PM10) has been collected using a high volume air sampler at two locations (urban and residential) in the city of Ahvaz, Iran, for sixteen 24-hour periods over four months (late summer to early winter). Microplastics (MPs) in the PM were isolated after sample digestion and were subsequently characterised by established techniques. All MPs sampled (n = 322) were of a fibrous nature, with polyethylene terephthalate, nylon and polypropylene being the dominant polymers and consistent with textiles and fabrics as the principal source. Despite a distinct seasonality (temperature and wind) over the study period, the abundance, size and colour of the fibres exhibited no clear temporal trend, and no clear differences were observed between the two sites. Concentrations of MPs ranged from none detected to about 0.017/m3 (median = 0.0065/m3) and are at the low end of ranges reported in the recent literature for various urban and remote locations. While some MPs may have a local origin, the weathering of other MPs and their acquisition of extraneous geosolids and salts suggests that long-range transport is also important. Back-trajectory calculations indicate that regional sources are mainly to the north and west of Ahvaz, but a southerly, maritime source is also possible in late autumn. Although concentrations of MPs in the atmosphere are well below those encountered in indoor air, further studies are required to elucidate their potential ecological impacts.

RESUMO

The Alternaria genus has pathogenic, endophytic, and saprobic characteristics. Alternaria genus causes respiratory diseases, fungal allergenicity and the production of mycotoxin in food. Ahvaz city is one of the areas where the presence of dust and high humidity cause the growth and spread of fungal species in the air. Identification of Alternaria species is difficult based on morphology solely. For the first time in Ahvaz, the classification of this fungus was performed using ITS region, alta1 gene, and morphology. For the identification of Alternaria isolates in the Ahvaz city air using morphological and molecular characteristics, potato dextrose agar (PDA) media were used to culture 40 Alternaria isolates recovered from the Ahvaz city air. Afterward, the appearance of the colonies was examined. The DNAs of the isolates were extracted and amplified using the specific primers of the ITS and, Alt a1 regions. The amplified DNA products were sequenced. Then, they were compared with the sequences in the NCBI GeneBank. Based on the morphological results, the isolates included four different species and A. alternata had the highest frequency. Alt a1 gene was present in all the isolates of Alternaria species recovered in our research. Finally, identifying the varieties of Alternaria species based on morphological characteristics as well as ITS or Alt a1 regions is useful but difficult.

RESUMO

Air pollution is one of the most pressing issues in populated Middle Eastern cities, in particular for the city of Ahvaz, Iran, imposing deleterious effects on the environment, public health, economy, culture, and other sectors. In this study, we investigate the relationship between meteorological parameters, PM10, AOD, air mass source origin, and visibility during severe desert dust storms (Average3h PM10 > 3200 µg m-3) between 2009 and 2012. Six of seven such events occurred between February and March. Interestingly, for the seven cases there was always an alarming PM10 mass concentration peak (137-553 µg m-3) between 12:00-18:00 (local time) that was 18-24 h before the dominant peak of the storm (3279-4899 µg m-3). The maximum wind speed over the multi-day periods examined for the dust storms is usually observed 6 h before the alarming PM10 peak. The minimum relative humidity, dew point temperature and air pressure occurred ± 3 h around the time of the alarming PM10 peak. Wind speed was the meteorological parameter that was consistently higher around the time of the first peak as compared to the second peak, with the reverse being true for sea level pressure. Based on four years of daily data in Ahvaz, PM10 was positively correlated with wind speed and air temperature and inversely correlated with sea level pressure and RH. An empirically-derived equation with R2 = 0.95 is reported to estimate the maximum PM10 concentration for severe desert dust events in the study region based on meteorological parameters. Finally, AOD is shown to correlate strongly (R2 = 0.86) with PM10 during periods with severe desert dust storms in the region.

RESUMO

After the early rainfall in the autumn of 2013, respiratory syndromes spread in the Khuzestan province of Iran with the most severity in Ahvaz. There have been recurring outbreaks in recent years. Considering that pollen-derived airborne allergens are regarded as key aeroallergens and the main cause of allergic rhinitis and asthma, this work aimed to forecast total pollen concentration in Ahvaz through an artificial neural network (ANN), followed by evaluating the pollen spatial distribution across the city and the association between pollen concentrations and environmental parameters. The utilized ANN in this work included an input layer with 13 parameters, a hidden layer of five neurons, and an output layer. Data were classified into training, validation, and testing sets. The ANN was implemented with 70% and 80% of data for training. The value of the correlation coefficient for the data validation of these two networks was 0.89 and 0.92, respectively. The results also indicated that despite the difference in the mean concentration of the pollens in various areas of Ahvaz, this difference was not statistically significant (P > 0.05). Furthermore, there was a negative correlation between the concentration of total pollen and relative humidity, precipitation, and air pressure. However, it had a positive correlation with temperature. Consequently, considering the logistical challenges of monitoring bioaerosols in the air, the ANN approach could predict total pollen concentrations. Therefore, in addition to measurements, the ANN technique can be a good tool to enable authorities to mitigate the impact of airborne pollen on people.

RESUMO

Dust storms and particulate matters had been increased due to climate change in the Middle East. On the other hand, urbanization and industrialization raised levels of gaseous air pollutants in all big cities. In the current study, air pollution information collected from Environmental Protection Agency of Khuzestan and Tehran containing hourly O3, NO2, CO, SO2, PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations between 2014 and 2015. This study evaluated the air quality of these two cities by Air Quality Index (AQI). As a result, mean concentrations of O3, NO2, PM10 and PM2.5 were higher in Ahvaz than Tehran while Tehran was more pollutant in terms of CO and SO2. Diurnal variations of O3 in weekend were the only trend located above weekday variations along the daytimes. Hourly variations of all pollutants changed with a wider range of concentrations in Ahvaz. Diurnal peaks of all pollutants showed their highest level on Monday as the busiest day in mega city, Tehran with the exception of SO2. PM2.5 was the worst and limiting pollutant for both cities. Accordingly, winter was the most polluted season by 77 and 33 µg m-3 in Ahvaz and Tehran, respectively. Number of clean days was significantly lower in Ahvaz (no-day) than mega city, Tehran (<17 days). The number of unhealthy days was also presented significantly higher in Ahvaz (>186 days). Although, annual PM2.5 concentrations were more in Ahvaz, the higher at-risk population in Tehran caused more health endpoints in the capital of Iran. Consequently, both cities should have their own especial pattern to control air pollution and attributed health damages.

RESUMO

Although Candida albicans is a part of the mycoflora of healthy individuals, it is causing mild to severe forms of candidiasis in patients with underlying diseases. The recent molecular investigations were classified three genotypes, A, B and C for C. albicans. The aim of the present study was to detect different genotypes of C. albicans complex species in a normal population in Iran. Saliva was randomly collected from a normal population, homogenized and cultured on CHROMagar Candida. Classical and molecular methods were used for the detection of isolates. Candida 25S rDNA gene was amplified using the primer pairs of CA-INT-L and CA-INT-R for ABC genotyping of C. albicans. Candida albicans complex was recovered from 103/194 (53·1%) normal papulation. Genotype A with a frequency of 41·7% was the most common isolate, followed by genotype C (34%), genotype B (20·4%) and genotype D (3·9%). Genotyping of C. albicans species complex from healthy individuals showed the presence of three A, B and C genotypes of C. albicans and one D genotype of C. dubliniensis.

RESUMO

Manure-inhabiting Mesostigmata mites are important biological control agents of pest flies. However, the biodiversity of this mite community is mainly known from Europe and America, and especially from cattle manure. This study examined the diversity and abundance of Mesostigmata mites associated with various types of manure in an (intensive) agricultural region of the Middle East, i.e., the city Ahvaz and its suburbs, in southwest Iran. Mite samples were extracted from manure of cattle, buffalo, sheep, horse, poultry and quail in 30 livestock and poultry farms. In total, 40 species belonging to 24 genera and 16 families were identified. The most diverse families were Laelapidae with eight species, Macrochelidae with seven and Parasitidae with six. Macrocheles muscaedomesticae and Uroobovella marginata were the most widespread species, recorded in 28 and 27 out of 30 collection sites, respectively. Two species, M. sumbaensis and U. marginata, were found in all studied manures. Simpson's diversity index recorded the highest diversity in buffalo and sheep manure. Real and theoretical species richness (rarefaction curves) were congruent in number of individuals. The presence of seven species of Macrochelidae in the manure confirms that these are important predators of the house fly for the region of Ahvaz and its suburbs. Members of the Parasitidae were highly prevalent, with one species known as a specialized predator of house fly eggs. This work aims to encourage further studies on the diversity of Mesostigmata in these agricultural settings, and further continue assessing the feasibility of these mites as effective biocontrol agents of filth flies in different types of manure and from different corners of the world.

RESUMO

This study investigates the concentrations of PM10-bound PAHs and their seasonal variations in three cities of Ahvaz, Abadan, and Asaluyeh in Iran. The mean concentrations of PM10 in two warm and cold seasons in Ahvaz were higher and in Abadan and Assaluyeh were lower than the national standard of Iran and the guidelines of the World Health Organization. The Σ16 PAHs concentration in ambient air PM10 during the cold season in Ahvaz, Abadan and Asaluyeh was 244.6, 633, and 909 ng m- 3, respectively, and during the warm season in Ahvaz, Abadan, and Asaluyeh was 242.1, 1570 and 251 ng m- 3, respectively. The high molecular weight PAHs were the most predominant components. The most abundant PAHs species were Pyr, Chr, B [ghi] P, and Flt. The results showed that the total PAHs concentration in the cold and warm seasons was dependent on industrial activities, particularly the neighboring petrochemical units of the city, vehicular exhausts, traffic and use of oil, gas, and coal in energy production. The total cancer risk values as a result of exposure to PAHs in ambient air PM10 in all three cities for children and adults and in both cold and warm seasons were between 1 × 10- 6 and 1 × 10- 4, and this indicates a potential carcinogenic risk. Therefore, considering the various sources of air pollutants and its role on people's health, decision makers should adopt appropriate policies on air quality to reduce the ambient air PAHs and to mitigate human exposure.

RESUMO

In this work, a sand and dust storm vulnerability mapping (SDS-VM) approach is developed to model the vulnerability of urban blocks to SDS using GIS spatial analysis and a range of geographical data. The SDS-VM was carried out in Ahvaz, IRAN, representing one of the most dust-polluted cities in West Asia. Here, vulnerability is defined as a function of three components: exposure, sensitivity, and adaptive capacity of the people in the city blocks to sand and dust storms. These components were formulated into measurable indicators (i.e. GIS layers) including: PM2.5, wind speed, distance from dust emission sources, demographic statistics (age, gender, family size, education level), number of building floors, building age, land surface temperature (LST), land use, percentage of literate population, distance from health services, distance from city facilities (city center, shopping centers), distance from infrastructure (public transportation, main roads and highways), distance from parks and green spaces, and green area per capita. The components and the indicators were weighted using analytical hierarchy process (AHP). Different levels of risks for the components and the indicators were defined using ordered weighted averaging (OWA). Urban SDS vulnerability maps at different risk levels were generated through spatial multi-criteria data analysis procedure. Vulnerability maps, with different risk levels, were validated against field-collected data of 781 patients hospitalized for dust-related diseases (i.e. respiratory, cardiovascular, and skin). Results showed that (i) SDS vulnerability map, obtained from the developed methodology, gives an overall accuracy of 79%; (ii); regions 1 and 5 of Ahvaz are recognized with the highest and lowest vulnerabilities to SDS, respectively; and (iii) ORness equal to 0 (very low risk) is the optimum SDS-VM risk level for decision-making to mitigate the harmful impacts of SDS in the deposition areas of Ahvaz city.

RESUMO

Dust storms not only affect the quality of life but also pose a serious health and social problem. The main source dust events include central and west Asia, the Taklimakan desert, and Middle East, carrying out high volume of particulate matter, which increased the level of PM10 as representative of dust storm. The purpose of this study was to investigate the number of mortality (TM), hospitalizations due to cardiovascular diseases (HACD) and respiratory diseases (HARD) among the people of Bishkek and Ahvaz. Data validation was performed using the WHO criteria. The average time PM10 in outdoor air was calculated, and its health effects were obtained by entering its annual data and population at risk, baseline incidence (BI), and relative risk index (RR) for IHD outcomes. In our study, AirQ software was used. The number of excess cases in Bishkek and Ahvaz for total mortality and cardiovascular mortality was 63 and 758 and 35 and 478 persons while for HARD and HACD was 84 and 2054 and 33 and 560 persons, respectively. The survey requires the need to enact and enforce permissible PM10 levels/standards due to dust storms to reduce the health effect on humans by relevant environmental authorities both at federal and state levels.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Medical education is a dynamic process, which needs to be improved to meet the new expectations of medical practitioners, health workers, and communities from different countries. An important part of medical students' education is to select an appropriate assessment method. In this regard, the objective structured practical examination (OSPE) can evaluate practical capabilities in a suitable step-wise, scientific, targeted and scheduled manner with direct consideration of student's performance during programmed test stations. The purpose of this study is to investigate the outcomes of the OSPE utilization versus traditional practical examination (TPE) for evaluating students in experimental physiology. METHODS: Totally, 120 medical students were chosen as the participants of this study: 1. TPE group (TPE used as a final exam; n=40); 2. TPE + OSPE group (TPE applied for half of topics and OSPE for another half; n=41); and 3. OSPE group (OSPE performed as a final exam; n=39). In order to evaluate the effect of OSPE, the average final grade of studied groups was compared. In addition, a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire, consisting of 10 questions was used to evaluate the students' attitudes toward using this method. RESULTS: The obtained results showed that the total grade in TPE group was significantly higher in comparison to TPE+OSPE and OSPE groups (respectively, P<0.01 and P<0.05), while according to students' expression, the average score for all of the items in feedback questionnaire was increased significantly in TPE+OSPE and OSPE groups compared with TPE group (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: In summary, feedback from students showed that they were in favor of OSPE compared with the TPE, and according to their statements in a feedback questionnaire, OSPE can improve learning in physiology as well as increasing students' satisfaction.

RESUMO

It is essential to study spatial distribution of Potentially Toxic Elements (PTEs) in surface soil, and separate PTEs geochemical background from their human sources, and also determine their correlation with other environmental factors in order to assess their impacts on humans, provide realistic environmental geochemical maps, and carry out soil management. For this purpose, this study was designed to investigate the surface soil in Ahvaz, Southwest of Iran. The applied methods were exploratory data analysis (EDA), including boxplot, Q-Q plot, probability plot (PP), concentration-area (C-A), number-size (N-S) fractal model, and singularity index (SI) model. The obtained results revealed that the fractal models led to a more realistic distinction among the geochemical population compared to the EDA methods such as probability plot. Furthermore, the C-A model was found to be more effective on the separation of subpopulation compared to the N-S and PP models. The studied elements exhibited a similar pattern implying that pollution is a function of geochemical dispersion regarding the surface soil in Ahvaz (Zn â‰« Pb > Cu > As). The studied metals-major elements plot also indicated that there was no meaningful relationship between Pb, Zn, Cu, and major elements in the study area. Plots of association of Pb, Zn, Cu, and As distinctly showed two general geogenic and anthropogenic populations. Moreover, the results of SI revealed that the highly contaminated area was consistent with the main defined hotspots and anthropogenic sources of elements as well as places affected by the contaminated area that have not been reported in previous studies. Furthermore, a combination of geochemical and geographical model comprising different statistical models was developed to more effectively separate geogenic from anthropogenic sources. Also, the geochemical background for the studied elements (Pb 180 mg/kg; Cu 200 mg/kg; Zn 90 mg/kg; As 65 mg/kg) was shown to be higher than the Iranian soil quality guideline with Pb, Zn, Cu, and As of 100, 80, 200, and 18 mg/kg, respectively.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Pregnant women and fetuses are sensitive to air pollution due to physiological changes in pregnancy. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between exposure to air pollution, low birth weight and preterm labor in Ahvaz. METHODS: This research was a time-series study. The research sample consisted of all data about low birth weight and preterm labor pregnant women from Imam Khomeini Hospital and Razi Hospital in Ahvaz city. Air pollutant data including O3, NO, NO2, SO2, CO, PM10 and PM2.5 and climate data were collected from the Environmental Protection Agency and the Khuzestan Province during a 10-year period from 2008 to 2018. The generalized additive models (GAMs) with different air pollutant lags up to 6 days were used. RESULTS: The results of multiple GAM model have shown that there is a direct and significant relationship between exposure to PM10 at 0-6-day lag, SO2 at 2- and 3-day lag and low birth weight. In addition, there was a direct and significant correlation between exposure to NO2, NO, CO and PM2.5 at 0-6-day lag and preterm labor. CONCLUSION: The results indicate the effect of air pollutants on low birth weight and preterm labor. Therefore, pregnant women should be informed about the negative consequences of air pollution and avoid exposure to polluted air during pregnancy.
