RESUMO

This study investigated the performance of the full-scale unit over a two-year period to enhance nitrification efficiency and provide operational strategies. Results indicated that raw water quality from Donggan River was notably influenced by seasonal variations, particularly during dry and wet seasons, impacting the nitrification efficiency of the biological pretreatment process. Factors such as influent concentrations of ammonia and total Kjeldahl nitrogen were found to have significant effects on nitrification, with temperature and conductivity also showing correlations. The specific rate of ammonia removal was calculated to be approximately 0.1 kg-N/m3/d under the existing operational setup. Moreover, elevating dissolved oxygen levels above 4 mg/L was proposed to potentially boost ammonia oxidation based on findings from experiments conducted in lab-scale bioreactors. In times of increased influent ammonia levels, the elimination of about 1-3 mg-N/L of total nitrogen signified the activation of denitrification processes. This observation was corroborated by results from next-generation sequencing techniques, verifying the existence of denitrifying microorganisms. The real-time PCR analysis results indicated that the abundance of comammox amoA gene was comparable with the abundance of the AOB amoA gene, indicating the presence of comammox Nitrospira and their potential role on nitrification in the system.

RESUMO

In this work, a novel polyurethane carrier modified with biochar and tourmaline/zeolite powder at ratio of 1:1 and 1:2 was developed to promote the formation of biofilms and the synergy of overall bacterial activity for Partial Denitrification/Anammox to treat low-nitrogen contaminated surface water. Based on the batch experiment, the modified biocarrier, BTP2 (biochar: tourmaline = 2: 1), exhibited the highest total nitrogen removal efficiency (83.63%) under influent total nitrogen of 15 mg/L and COD/NO3- of 3. The dense biofilm was formed in inner side of biocarrier owing to the increased surface roughness and various functional groups suggested by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared analysis. The EPS content increased from 200.15 to 220.26 mg/g VSS in BTP2 system. Besides, the rapid NH4+ capture and organics release of the modified carrier fueled the growth of anammox and denitrification bacteria, with the activity of 2.13 ± 0.52 mg N/gVSS/h and 6.70 ± 0.52 mg N/gVSS/h (BTP2). High-throughput sequencing unraveled the increased abundances of Candidatus_Competibacter (0.82%), Thauera (0.60%) and Candidatus_Brocadia (0.55%) which was responsible for the synergy of incomplete reduction of NO3- to NO2- and NH4+ oxidation. Overall, this study provided a valid and simple-control guide for biofilm formation towards rapid enrichment and great collaboration of Anammox and denitrification bacteria.

RESUMO

In this study, modified polyamide fibers were used as biocarriers to enrich dense biofilms in a multi-stage biological contact oxidation reactor (MBCOR) in which partitioned wastewater treatment zone (WTZ) and bioaugmentation zone (BAZ) were established to enhance the removal of methyl orange (MO) and its metabolites while minimizing sludge yields. WTZ exhibited high biomass loading capacity (5.75 ± 0.31 g/g filler), achieving MO removal rate ranging from 68 % to 86 % under different aeration condition within 8 h in which the most dominant genus Chlorobium played an important role. In the BAZ, Pseudoxanthomonas was the dominant genus while carbon starvation stimulated the enrichment of chemoheterotrophy and aerobic_chemoheterotrophy genes thereby enhanced the microbial utilization of cell-released substrates, MO as well as its metabolic intermediates. These results revealed the mechanism bioaugmentation on MBCOR in effectively eliminating both MO and its metabolites.

RESUMO

Algal membrane bioreactors (algae-MBRs) and advanced hybrid biocarrier algal membrane bioreactors (hybrid algae-MBRs) have been investigated to improve the performance of conventional MBRs (C-MBRs). Maximum chemical oxygen demand and nutrient removal efficiencies, similar to the maximum biomass growth rate, chlorophyll-a concentration, and balanced microbial growth, were achieved in the hybrid algae-MBR inoculated with polyethylene biocarriers and algal cells. During the 90 days of operation, the hybrid algae-MBR demonstrated lower membrane fouling without membrane washing, whereas the C-MBR and algae-MBR were washed seven and four times, respectively. Compared to the C-MBR, both the algal MBR and hybrid algal MBR exhibited higher levels of nitrification, with 6 and 10 % greater rates, respectively. In addition, they displayed significant improvements in ammonium biomass uptake compared to the C-MBR, with increases of 30 and 37 %, respectively. In the algae-MBR, the chlorophyll-a results showed proliferation of algae over time. However, biocarriers that provide an additional surface for microbial growth, particularly algal strains, inhibit algal proliferation and result in balanced microbial growth (based on chlorophyll-a/MLVSS) in the bulk solution of the hybrid algae-MBR. In addition, the oxygen mass balance estimated that photosynthesis provided 45 % of the dissolved oxygen required in the studied algal reactors, whereas mixing provided the remainder. Additionally, microbial sequencing results indicated that the microbial communities (e.g., Candidatus, Cloacibacterium, and Falavobacterium) were altered by introducing microalgae and biocarriers that affected the activity of different microorganisms, changed the sludge and fouling layer properties, and improved the performance of the C-MBRs.

RESUMO

Moving bed biofilm reactor combined with membrane bioreactor (MBBR-MBR) constitute a highly effective wastewater treatment technology. The aim of this research work was to study the effect of commercial K1 biocarriers (MBBR-MBR K1 unit) and 3D-printed biocarriers fabricated from 13X and Halloysite (MBBR-MBR 13X-H unit), on the efficiency and the fouling rate of an MBBR-MBR unit during wastewater treatment. Various physicochemical parameters and trans-membrane pressure were measured. It was observed that in the MBBR-MBR K1 unit, membrane filtration improved reaching total membrane fouling at 43d, while in the MBBR-MBR 13X-H and in the control MBBR-MBR total fouling took place at about 32d. This is attributed to the large production of soluble microbial products (SMP) in the MBBR-MBR 13X-H, which resulted from a large amount of biofilm created in the 13X-H biocarriers. An optimal biodegradation of the organic load was concluded, and nitrification and denitrification processes were improved at the MBBR-MBR K1 and MBBR-MBR 13X-H units. The dry mass produced on the 13X-H biocarriers ranged at 4980-5711 mg, three orders of magnitude larger than that produced on the K1, which ranged at 2.9-4.6 mg. Finally, it was observed that mostly extracellular polymeric substances were produced in the biofilm of K1 biocarriers while in 13X-H mostly SMP.

RESUMO

The addition of biocarriers can improve biological processes in bioreactors, since their surface allows for the immobilization, attachment, protection, and growth of microorganisms. In addition, the development of a biofilm layer allows for the colonization of microorganisms in the biocarriers. The structure, composition, and roughness of the biocarriers' surface are crucial factors that affect the development of the biofilm. In the current work, the aluminosilicate zeolites 13X and ZSM-5 were examined as the main building components of the biocarrier scaffolds, using bentonite, montmorillonite, and halloysite nanotubes as inorganic binders in various combinations. We utilized 3D printing to form pastes into monoliths that underwent heat treatment. The 3D-printed biocarriers were subjected to a mechanical analysis, including density, compression, and nanoindentation tests. Furthermore, the 3D-printed biocarriers were morphologically and structurally characterized using nitrogen adsorption at 77 K (LN2), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The stress-strain response of the materials was obtained through nanoindentation tests combined with the finite element analysis (FEA). These tests were also utilized to simulate the lattice geometries under compression loading conditions to investigate their deformation and stress distribution in relation to experimental compression testing. The results indicated that the 3D-printed biocarrier of 13X/halloysite nanotubes was endowed with a high specific surface area of 711 m2/g and extended mesoporous structure. Due to these assets, its bulk density of 1.67 g/cm3 was one of the lowest observed amongst the biocarriers derived from the various combinations of materials. The biocarriers based on the 13X zeolite exhibited the highest mechanical stability and appropriate morphological features. The 13X/halloysite nanotubes scaffold exhibited a hardness value of 45.64 MPa, which is moderate compared to the rest, while it presented the highest value of modulus of elasticity. In conclusion, aluminosilicate zeolites and their combinations with clays and inorganic nanotubes provide 3D-printed biocarriers with various textural and structural properties, which can be utilized to improve biological processes, while the most favorable characteristics are observed when utilizing the combination of 13X/halloysite nanotubes.

RESUMO

The intensification of biochar into fluidized bed membrane bioreactor was investigated to mitigate membrane fouling. Different biochars from algal biomass were produced and used as biomaterials for wastewater treatment. In this study, different macroalgal biochar was synthesized at different pyrolysis temperatures and characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Brunauer Emmett-Teller (BET) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques to implicate their effect on membrane fouling reduction in fluidized bed membrane bioreactor. The combined effect of macroalgal biochars and biocarriers with gas sparging was evaluated for fouling mitigation. Macroalgal biochar curtailed membrane fouling effectively at low gas sparging rate. Transmembrane pressure (TMP) was reduced to 0.053 bar; under the fluidization of biochar-650 and biocarriers with gas sparging; from 0.27 bar (gas sparging only). Combined effect of gas sparging, biocarriers and biochar-650 instigated 92.1% fouling reduction in comparative to gas sparging alone. Mechanical scouring driven by biocarriers could reduce fouling due to removing surface deposit of foulants from membrane surface effectively and biochar can efficiently adsorb foulants because of its active functional groups resulting in reduction of colloidal fouling. The addition of divalent ions (Ca2+) further enhanced the fouling reduction in fluidized bed membrane bioreactor.

RESUMO

Selection of biocarrier type is an essential element for successful bacterial cells immobilization. The present investigation aimed to evaluate a novel application of Cress and Chia seeds as biocarriers for immobilization of mixed bacterial cells. Being an environmentally friendly, non-polluting, inexpensive, and non-toxic substances makes them promising biocarriers. On the other hand, there is an increasing concern about contamination by surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is among the most commonly used surfactant. The Cress and Chia seeds were cross-linked with PVA to prepare two types of beads; CrE-PVA and ChE-PVA, respectively. The beads were utilized for the SDS biodegradation in four kinds of actual SDS-bearing wastewaters originated from; carwash garage (CWW), laundry facility (LWW), and household detergent industry (HWW), in addition to domestic wastewater (DWW). The results revealed that maximum efficiencies of SDS elimination in DWW, LWW, HWW, and CWW were 98.12, 94.32, 93.04, and 99.08%, respectively, using CrE-PVA and 99.04, 94.96, 94.71, and 99.27%, respectively using ChE-PVA. Finally, both types of beads were recycled for five times without losing their stability and efficiency for SDS biodegradation. Four kinetic models were adopted which were Blackman, Monod, Haldane, and Teissier. Results revealed that Teissier model well fitted the experimental data.

RESUMO

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nanoparticles released from various cell types that have emerged as powerful new therapeutic option for a variety of diseases. EVs are involved in the transmission of biological signals between cells and in the regulation of a variety of biological processes, highlighting them as potential novel targets/platforms for therapeutics intervention and/or delivery. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate new aspects of EVs' biogenesis, biodistribution, metabolism, and excretion as well as safety/compatibility of both unmodified and engineered EVs upon administration in different pharmaceutical dosage forms and delivery systems. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of essential physiological and pathological roles of EVs in different organs and organ systems. We provide an overview regarding application of EVs as therapeutic targets, therapeutics, and drug delivery platforms. We also explore various approaches implemented over the years to improve the dosage of specific EV products for different administration routes.

RESUMO

The aim of this work was to study the effects of the magnetic microparticles (MMP) on nitrogen removal under low C/N conditions. A 30-day anaerobic/oxic progress illustrated that nitrification and denitrification were promoted in the presence of MMP. MMP could facilitate the production of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and act as pH buffering in aerobic conditions. The high-throughput sequencing displayed that, compared with the sludge without MMP, the relative abundance of Dokdonella and Comamonas which are capable of both nitrifying and denitrifying were 8.7% and 1.29% higher in anaerobic sludge and 7.11% and 0.97% higher in aerobic sludge with MMP, respectively. The relative abundance of Pseudomonas with the excellent capability of EPS secretion was also observed 4.33 times higher than that without MMP in the aerobic sludge. Based on the superior performance above, MMP is a promising additive to enhance nitrogen removal efficiency for low C/N wastewater.
