BACKGROUND: The majority of primary, intraocular tumors in cats originate from the uvea and include feline diffuse iris melanoma, lymphoma, and iridociliary epithelial adenoma or adenocarcinoma. In this case report, we describe for the first time the clinical, histological, and immunohistochemical findings of a rare myxoid intraocular neoplasm arising from the ciliary body in a cat. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old, female, spayed domestic shorthaired cat was presented for evaluation of discolouration of the right eye. Upon examination, a clear to light whitish-tan, bubble-shaped intraocular mass adherent to the inferior ciliary body and extending into the anterior chamber was noted. Within five weeks, the tumor was significantly larger and the eye had developed secondary glaucoma so was enucleated. Light microscopic examination of the globe revealed a multinodular, hypocellular neoplasm arising from the ciliary body composed of interwoven spindle cells embedded in abundant amounts of a lightly basophilic myxoid matrix. Neoplastic cells exhibited strong immunoreactivity for cytokeratin while also showing moderate to strong immunoreactivity to vimentin. A diagnosis was therefore made of an unusual intraocular myxoid epithelioid sarcoma arising from the ciliary body. CONCLUSIONS: Although apparently exceedingly rare, epithelioid myxosarcoma should be included as a differential diagnosis for intraocular tumors in cats and they represent a clinical, histologic, and immunohistochemical diagnostic challenge. Early surgical intervention should be considered to prevent local invasion and ascension to the brain.

BACKGROUND: Small-bore wire-guided thoracostomy tubes (SBWGTT) are commonly used in cats to manage pleural disease and generally have a low complication rate. Our study aimed to explore the correlation between recumbency of cats, placement method, and the occurrence of insertional complications to identify risk factors during SBWGTT placement. In this experimental cadaveric study, SBWGTT placement using a modified Seldinger technique was conducted in 24 feline cadavers. Cats, euthanized for reasons unrelated to the study, were randomly assigned to pleural effusion (EFF; n = 12) and pneumothorax (PNEU; n = 12) groups. Each cadaver was intubated and ventilated with a peak inspiratory pressure (PIP) of 10 mmHg, and sterile saline or air was instilled into the thorax over a 5 mm thoracoscopic trocar in the fourth intercostal space (ICS). Instillation was stopped when the lateral thoracic wall to lung distance (TWLD) reached 10 to 12 mm, measured with ultrasound in the favorable position. Sternal recumbency was the favorable position for the EFF group, and lateral recumbency for the PNEU group. Following the placement of the first SBWGTT in each group, the cadavers were positioned unfavorably (lateral recumbency for EFF group, sternal recumbency for PNEU group), and a second drain was introduced contralaterally. A bilateral 8th ICS thoracotomy was then performed to visually assess intrathoracic structures and drain integrity. A binary logistic regression mixed model was conducted to determine interaction between the induced condition and body position. RESULTS: A total of 48 SBWGTTs were placed, with complications observed in 33.3% (8/24) of cases. Five of these were major complications consisting of lung lacerations. Complications were more common in the unfavorable position, accounting for 75% of cases, although this result was not statistically significant. The odds of complication rates were > 70% in the unfavorable position and decreased with an increase in TWLD (< 30%). CONCLUSION: Complications associated with SBWGTT placement are influenced by recumbency, although the data did not reach statistical significance. Placing cats in lateral recumbency for pneumothorax treatment and sternal recumbency for pleural effusion treatment may reduce insertional complications.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence and severity of intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration (IVDD) throughout the spine of young, middle-aged, and old asymptomatic cats; identify differences between the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine; and investigate the influence of sex and neuter status on the prevalence of feline IVDD. METHODS: 60 cadavers were collected from asymptomatic cats and subdivided into 3 age groups: young (≥ 1 to < 6 years), middle aged (≥ 6 to < 12 years), and old (≥ 12 years). T2 weighted sagittal MRI studies of the spine were obtained. Each IVD was graded according to the modified Pfirrmann grading for feline IVDD. Cumulative link mixed models were used to analyze the significance of spinal region, age, sex, and neuter status on the degenerative state of the IVDs. RESULTS: A total of 1,544 IVDs were evaluated; 884 (57.3%), 425 (27.5%), 147 (9.5%), 82 (5.3%), and 6 (0.4%) were graded Pfirrmann 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, respectively. Irrespective of spinal region, middle-aged cats (OR, 4.03; P < .01) and old cats (OR, 12.5; P < .01) had significantly higher odds for IVDD compared to young cats. For old cats, thoracic (OR, 4.44; P < .01) and cervical IVDs (OR, 2.76; P < .01) had significantly higher odds of degenerating compared to lumbar IVDs. No significant effect of sex (P = .81) and neuter status (P = .61) was found. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The prevalence of feline IVDD significantly increases with progressive age, with the thoracic and cervical IVDs showing the highest odds for degeneration. However, extreme stages of IVDD were only occasionally observed.

BACKGROUND: Bartonella species are fastidious, intracellular bacteria responsible for an expanding array of human pathologies. Most are considered to be transmitted by direct inoculation with infected bodily fluids from a mammalian reservoir species or vector-transmitted through a variety of arthropod species and their excrement. However, there are mounting reports of infection in the absence of documented animal or vector contact. A variety of Bartonella species have been documented in conditions affecting both the peripheral and central nervous systems. More common conditions, including neuroretinitis, are often associated with Bartonella henselae. However, Bartonella quintana, the agent of trench fever, as well as emerging pathogens related to rodent reservoir species, B. grahamii and B. elizabethae, have also been documented. Encephalitis and encephalopathy, also most often associated with B. henselae, have been reported with B. quintana, B. washoensis (ground squirrels) and B. vinsonii subsp. vinsonii (voles) infections. Bartonella infections have also been associated with peripheral neuropathies, such as cranial nerve paresis and neuropathic pain, including infection with less commonly encountered species such as Bartonella koehlerae. Recently, molecular diagnostic testing revealed that DNA from Bartonella spp. was found to be more prevalent in blood of patients with neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and psychoses compared to healthy controls. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted on PubMed, Google Scholar and Web of Science. Search terms included Bartonella and specific neurological conditions and focused on peer-reviewed case reports published after 2012 pursuant to a prior review, with limited exceptions for conditions not previously covered. Published diagnostic testing, serology, molecular testing or pathology, were necessary for inclusion, except for one case which had clinical and epidemiological evidence consistent with diagnosis along with follow-up. RESULTS: Neurobartonelloses included neuralgic amyotrophy, complex regional pain syndrome, chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, cranial nerve paralysis, Guillain-Barré syndrome, peripheral vasculitic polyneuropathy, acute transverse myelopathy, neuroretinitis, encephalitis/encephalopathy, cerebral vasculitis/aneurysm and neuropsychiatric conditions. CONCLUSIONS: The breadth of reported symptoms and clinical syndromes associated with an increasing number of Bartonella species continues to expand. Increased clinical awareness of this important zoonotic pathogen is necessary to advance One Health among the medical and veterinary communities.

The enteric protozoan parasites Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. are common cause of diarrhea in pet dogs and cats, affecting primarily young animals. This comparative study evaluates the diagnostic performance of conventional and molecular methods for the detection of G. duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. infection in dogs and cats.The compared diagnostic assays included merthiolate-iodine-formalin (MIF) method, lateral flow immunochromatography rapid test (ICT) and real-time PCR; using direct immunofluorescence assay (DFA) as golden standard. The study included the analysis of 328 fecal samples from different dog (n = 225) and cat (n = 103) populations.According to DFA, the overall prevalence of G. duodenalis was 24.4% (80/328, 95% CI: 19.8-29.4), varying from 11.6% (12/103, 95% CI: 6.2-19.5) in cats to 30.2% (68/225, 95% CI: 24.3-36.7) in dogs. The overall prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. was 4.0% (13/328, 95% CI: 2.1-6.7), varying from 2.9% (3/103, 95% CI: 0.6-8.3) in cats to 4.4% (10/225, 95% CI: 2.1-8.0) in dogs. MIF was only used for the detection of G. duodenalis, which was identified by this method in 22.7% of dogs and 7.8% of cats, respectively. DFA was the most sensitive technique for detecting G. duodenalis in samples from dogs and cats (p-value: < 0.001), followed by real-time PCR. Identification of Cryptosporidium infections was most effectively accomplished by the combination of DFA and PCR technique (p-value: < 0.001). In addition, epidemiological (sex, age, origin) and clinical (fecal consistency) variables were collected to assess their potential associations with an increased likelihood of infection by G. duodenalis and/or Cryptosporidium spp. Breeder dogs were more likely to harbor G. duodenalis infection (p-value: 0.004), whereas female cats were significantly more infected with Cryptosporidium (p-value: 0.003).In conclusion, DFA (alone or in combination with PCR) has been identified as the most accurate and cost-effective method for detecting G. duodenalis and Cryptosporidium spp. in fecal samples from pet dogs and cats. This highlights their importance in both veterinary and clinical settings for enabling prompt treatment and preventing potential transmission to humans.

Increasing numbers of dogs and cats with cancer are treated with stereotactic radiosurgery, stereotactic radiation therapy or stereotactic body radiotherapy (SRS, SRT or SBRT). We provide a systematic review of the current data landscape with a focus on technical and dosimetric data of stereotactic radiotherapy in veterinary oncology. Original peer-reviewed articles on dogs and cats with cancer treated with SRT were included. The systematic search included Medline via PubMed and EMBASE. The study was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews (PRISMA) statement. We assessed the manuscripts regarding outcome reporting, treatment planning, dose prescription, -delivery and -reporting as well as quality assurance. As of February 2024, there are 80 peer-reviewed publications on various disease entities on SRS, SRT and SBRT in veterinary medicine. Overall, we found often insufficient or highly variable technical data, with incomplete information to reproduce these treatments. While in some instances, technical factors may not impact clinical outcome, the variability found in protocols, outcome and toxicity assessments precludes accurate and reliable conclusions for a benefit of stereotactic radiotherapy for many of the treated diseases. In line with the extensive recommendations from human stereotactic radiotherapy practise, we propose a draft of reporting items for future stereotactic radiation treatments in veterinary medicine. SRS, SRT and SBRT have specific clinical and technological requirements that differ from those of standard radiation therapy. Therefore, a deep understanding of the methodologies, as well as the quality and precision of dose delivery, is essential for effective clinical knowledge transfer.

Background: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe mental disorder that is characterised by a pervasive pattern of instability of interpersonal relationships, self-image, and mood as well as marked impulsivity. BPD has its peak incidence and prevalence from puberty through to emerging adulthood. BPD is a controversial diagnosis in young people. Commonly, young people with BPD are under-diagnosed, untreated, are not in employment or training and are estranged from their families. Yet, they have complex needs and are at high suicide risk. Aim: To assess the feasibility of conducting a randomised controlled trial (f-RCT) of a BRIDGE, a brief intervention programme for young people (age 14-24) with BPD symptoms (sub-threshold or threshold) in a community sample from Scotland, UK. Method: Forty young people (age 14-24) meeting criteria for BPD symptoms, will be randomised in a 1:1 ratio to receive either a) the BRIDGE intervention plus service-as-usual or b) service-as-usual alone. Follow up will be 12 weeks and 24 weeks post-intervention. The study is carried out between 2021 to 2024. Outcome: The two primary outcomes of the MQ funded, BRIDGE project (f-RCT) are i. recruitment rates and ii. retention rates. The study will present the acceptability and appropriateness of our putative outcome measures for a future definitive randomised controlled trial (d-RCT). Impact: Young people with BPD benefit from good clinical care and targeted intervention, however are regularly missed or mislabelled. The community based feasibility trial would provide initial evidence of variable needs of young people with complex needs, who maybe missed or excluded from services as they don't "fit" a model/diagnosis. Workable multi-agency service model proposed in the trial would be a major advance in understanding care pathways regardless of trial outcome. KEY MESSAGE: Hydrogen peroxide promoted leaf senescence by sulfenylating the magnesium chelating protease I subunit (CHLI1) in the chlorophyll synthesis pathway, and inhibited its activity to reduce chlorophyll synthesis. Leaf senescence is the final and crucial stage of plant growth and development, during which chlorophyll experiences varying degrees of destruction. It is well-known that the higher ROS accumulation is a key factor for leaf senescence, but whether and how ROS regulates chlorophyll synthesis in the process are unknown. Here, we report that H2O2 inhibits chlorophyll synthesis during leaf senescence via the I subunit of magnesium-chelatase (CHLI1). During leaf senescence, the decrease of chlorophyll content is accompanied by the increase of H2O2 accumulation, as well as the inhibition of catalase (CAT) genes expression. The mutant cat2-1, with increased H2O2 shows an accelerated senescence phenotype and decreased CHLI1 activity compared with the wild type. H2O2 inhibits CHLI1 activity by sulfenylating CHLI1 during leaf senescence. Consistent with this, the chli1 knockout mutant displays the same premature leaf senescence symptom as cat2-1, while overexpression of CHLI1 in cat2-1 can partially restore its early senescence phenotype. Taken together, these results illustrate that CAT2-mediated H2O2 accumulation during leaf senescence represses chlorophyll synthesis through sulfenylating CHLI1, and thus inhibits its activity, providing a new insight into the pivotal role of chlorophyll synthesis as a participant in orchestrating the leaf senescence.

OBJECTIVES: Stress associated with manipulation during electrocardiography (ECG) recording in cats potentially limits the assessment of autonomic function through heart rate variability (HRV) in the feline population. This study proposed an alternative, cat friendly, stethoscopic approach to evaluate HRV with an easily acquired vasovagal tonus index (VVTI). METHODS: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate whether VVTI derived from heart sound signals could distinguish between relaxed and stimulated states. A total of 29 cats with 56 recordings of heart sound and ECG on 31 occasions were included. In 25 cats in their home environment, a stethoscope connected to a digital recording device was used to record 2 mins of heart sounds twice - with the cats in a relaxed state and immediately after stimulation. The VVTI was calculated from 20, 60 and 120 consecutive beat-to-beat intervals on the heart sound spectrogram (stethoscopic-VVTI 20, 60 and 120), using the natural logarithm of the variance of the intervals based on previous literature. A 2-min ECG recording was obtained at home with the intention of avoiding strict restraint. To demonstrate the feasibility of the stethoscopic approach in a hospital setting, six cats (two of which were also recorded at home) underwent heart sound and ECG recordings during planned veterinary visits. RESULTS: Stethoscopic-VVTI 20 (5.43 to 4.79, P = 0.001), 60 (6.20 to 5.18, P <0.001) and 120 (6.24 to 5.60, P = 0.02) all significantly decreased after stimulation, indicating a reduced vasovagal tone as expected. Calculations of stethoscopic-VVTI from different sections of the recording yielded statistically similar results. Stethoscopic-VVTI showed a negative correlation with the corresponding heart rate. Bland-Altman analysis revealed a mean bias for the differences between stethoscopic-VVTI and ECG-VVTI of 0.50 and 1.07 at home and in the hospital, respectively. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: VVTI can be successfully detected through a stethoscopic approach, serving as a less stressful tool for HRV evaluation in cats during routine auscultation.

Staphylococcus pseudintermedius has been isolated from dogs, cats, and horses and is also known as an emergent zoonotic agent. We administered orbifloxacin, a fluoroquinolone, to treat bacterial infections of cutaneous wounds caused by excessive grooming of the skin in contact with the subcutaneous port of the subcutaneous ureteral bypass (SUB) system in a cat. However, after 80 days of treatment, a severe abscess was observed in the wound and fluoroquinolone-resistant S. pseudintermedius was isolated from the abscess. The isolate was identified as a novel sequence type (ST) 2660 and contained genes for leukocidins (lukS and lukF), exfoliative toxin (siet), and biofilm regulation (icaA and icaD). The isolate was resistant to macrolide, lincosamide, fluoroquinolone, and tetracycline classes. In addition, the isolate had strong biofilm-forming ability which significantly increased with culturing at 39 °C compared with that at 37 °C, suggesting that the isolate prefers a cats' body temperature as the optimal biofilm growth condition. Notably, the biofilms were increased in the presence of doxycycline with culturing at 39 °C. This study is the first report in Japan on the new sequence type of S. pseudintermedius isolated from a companion animal and clarifies the distinctive virulence of S. pseudintermedius.

BACKGROUND: Feline blood transfusion is required for the treatment of various illnesses in cats, and the safety of donor cats is vital. Donor adverse reactions can include cardiorespiratory, venepuncture-related, and behavioral abnormalities. HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: To describe a large number of feline blood donation events and document use of sedation and anxiolysis, record volume of blood collected and describe the frequency, type, and risk factors for, adverse reactions. ANIMALS: The study included 7812 individual cats and 29 201 donation events at a blood banking center over 5 years. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of donation event records with signalment, donation volume, sedation status, donation number, and adverse reactions (acute and caregiver reported) recorded. Risk factors for adverse reactions were examined by stratifying data according to groups exposed to relevant predictors and calculating odds ratios with 95% and 99% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: Adverse reactions were uncommon (0.29%, 2.88/1000 donor events) and most commonly were cardiorespiratory (0.08%, 0.75/1000 donor events) or behavioral (0.06%, 0.62/1000 donor events). The only risk factor significantly associated with adverse reactions was conscious donation, with conscious donors 4.4 times more likely to have an adverse reaction (95% CI, 2.5-7.9, P ≤ .0001). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Feline blood donation is associated with a low rate of adverse reactions. Sedation should be considered to reduce adverse reactions, and the environment and interactions optimized to reduce donor stress. Caregiver education on care postdonation could reduce behavioral adverse reactions.

Nocardia infections in cats most commonly present as subcutaneous wounds, or less commonly, as pneumonia, purulent pleurisy and disseminated disease. Abdominal involvement is rarely reported, and to date, localised retroperitoneal infection has only been reported in people. This report describes a five-year-old domestic shorthair cat living in Canberra, Australia, that presented with a two-month history of pyrexia and inappetence progressing to anorexia. Ultrasonography showed a large retroperitoneal mass incorporating both ureters. Euthanasia was elected because of the guarded prognosis. Necropsy examination revealed the mass to be comprised of extensive pyogranulomatous inflammation with fibrosis, Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon and filamentous Gram-positive bacteria. Culture and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry identified the causative agent as Nocardia brasiliensis. N. brasiliensis is commonly diagnosed as a cause of cutaneous nocardiosis in Australian human patients, but to date has only been reported in one cat from the United States and one dog from Australia. A treatment approach that might have been used in such a case is provided even though the cat's owners elected not to proceed with surgical intervention.

A 2-year-old female Bengal cat was referred for acute right forelimb lameness one month after ovariectomy. Physical examination revealed multifocal pain on bone palpation and fever. Radiographs showed mixed lytic-proliferative polyostotic diaphyseal osteopathy of multiple bone segments. Histopathologic evaluation of bone biopsies showed severe chronic pyogranulomatous osteomyelitis and multidrug-resistant Serratia marcescens was cultured. Antibiotic therapy with piperacillin-tazobactam was administered for 60 days, based on susceptibility testing. Lameness and bone pain resolved within 15 days, and radiographs after 30 days showed decreased bone lysis. At a 6-month recheck, the cat recovered completely, and only bone remodelling was evident on radiographs. Multifocal bacterial haematogenous osteomyelitis (HO) caused by Serratia marcescens was diagnosed in an adult immunocompetent cat. HO is infrequently reported in dogs and cats with young and immunocompromised patients being most at risk. Prior ovariectomy and anaesthesia may have predisposed the cat to the development of a hospital-associated infection (HAI), as other aetiologies or predisposing causes for osteomyelitis were reasonably excluded. Serratia marcescens is a gram-negative bacterium recently reported as responsible for human and veterinary HAIs, although it has never been stated for HO in small animals. Early recognition and antibiotic therapy led to good outcome in this case.

Feline chronic enteropathy is a poorly defined condition of older cats that encompasses chronic enteritis to low-grade intestinal lymphoma. The histological evaluation of lymphocyte numbers and distribution in small intestinal biopsies is crucial for classification and grading. However, conventional histological methods for lymphocyte quantification have low interobserver agreement, resulting in low diagnostic reliability. This study aimed to develop and validate an artificial intelligence (AI) model to detect intraepithelial and lamina propria lymphocytes in hematoxylin and eosin-stained small intestinal biopsies from cats. The median sensitivity, positive predictive value, and F1 score of the AI model compared with the majority opinion of 11 veterinary anatomic pathologists, were 100% (interquartile range [IQR] 67%-100%), 57% (IQR 38%-83%), and 67% (IQR 43%-80%) for intraepithelial lymphocytes, and 89% (IQR 71%-100%), 67% (IQR 50%-82%), and 70% (IQR 43%-80%) for lamina propria lymphocytes, respectively. Errors included false negatives in whole-slide images with faded stain and false positives in misidentifying enterocyte nuclei. Semiquantitative grading at the whole-slide level showed low interobserver agreement among pathologists, underscoring the need for a reproducible quantitative approach. While semiquantitative grade and AI-derived lymphocyte counts correlated positively, the AI-derived lymphocyte counts overlapped between different grades. Our AI model, when supervised by a pathologist, offers a reproducible, objective, and quantitative assessment of feline intestinal lymphocytes at the whole-slide level, and has the potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy and consistency for feline chronic enteropathy.

Locomotion in mammals is directly controlled by the spinal neuronal network, operating under the control of supraspinal signals and somatosensory feedback that interact with each other. However, the functional architecture of the spinal locomotor network, its operation regimes, and the role of supraspinal and sensory feedback in different locomotor behaviors, including at different speeds, remain unclear. We developed a computational model of spinal locomotor circuits receiving supraspinal drives and limb sensory feedback that could reproduce multiple experimental data obtained in intact and spinal-transected cats during tied-belt and split-belt treadmill locomotion. We provide evidence that the spinal locomotor network operates in different regimes depending on locomotor speed. In an intact system, at slow speeds (<0.4 m/s), the spinal network operates in a non-oscillating state-machine regime and requires sensory feedback or external inputs for phase transitions. Removing sensory feedback related to limb extension prevents locomotor oscillations at slow speeds. With increasing speed and supraspinal drives, the spinal network switches to a flexor-driven oscillatory regime and then to a classical half-center regime. Following spinal transection, the model predicts that the spinal network can only operate in the state-machine regime. Our results suggest that the spinal network operates in different regimes for slow exploratory and fast escape locomotor behaviors, making use of different control mechanisms.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA) in dogs and cats by veterinary anaesthesiologists. STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional online, voluntary, anonymous survey. POPULATION: Data from 153 answered questionnaires. METHODS: An anonymous questionnaire was sent via e-mail to diplomates, residents and residency-trained individuals from the American and European Colleges of Veterinary An(a)esthesia and Analgesia, to gather information on the use, perceived advantages, reasons for the use or not of TIVA and attitudes towards this technique in dogs and cats. Descriptive statistics and logistic regression analysis to detect significant associations were performed. The effect size was estimated using the odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). A significance level of p < 0.05 was used. RESULTS: We obtained 153/703 responses (66% diplomates, 34% residents; overall response rate of 21.7%). Although 99% and 94% of respondents used TIVA in dogs and cats, respectively, only 14% used it frequently (several times a week) in dogs, and < 1% in cats. Most respondents used propofol (97%, dogs) and alfaxalone (85%, cats), mostly combined with opioids. Reasons for not using TIVA more frequently included prolonged recovery (49%, dogs; 61%, cats), higher cost (46%, dogs) and concerns about drug accumulation (44%, cats). Frequent TIVA use was driven by clinical indications (100%) and greater haemodynamic stability (87%). A higher proportion of respondents using TIVA frequently reported the high stability of the anaesthetic plane (20%; OR = 5.0; 95% CI: 1.4-17.8; p = 0.013) and disagreed with using TIVA only when a specific clinical indication existed (OR = 3.3; 95% CI: 1.4-10.0; p = 0.013). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although occasional, TIVA use is reported among veterinary anaesthesiologists. Clinical indications for TIVA are the most likely reason for its use, whereas factors such as a prolonged recovery or higher cost might limit its use.

BACKGROUND: Cat eye syndrome (CES) is a rare congenital disease frequently caused by a partial tetrasomy of the proximal long (q) arm of chromosome 22, due to a small supernumerary marker chromosome (sSMC). CES patients show remarkable phenotypic variability. Despite the progress of molecular cytogenetic technology, the cause of phenotypic variability and the genotype-phenotype correlations remain unknown. METHODS: We analyzed clinical and genetic data of a new patient with CES together with 27 previously reported ones with a confirmed genomic gain in the PubMed database between 2012 and 2023. RESULTS: We reported a boy with CES carrying a 22q11.1-q11.21 duplication of 1.76 Mb tetrasomy (16888900_18644241, hg19) who presented currently rare or unreported clinical findings such as congenital aural atresia, hearing loss, PLSVC, and IVC. The results of the whole exome sequencing (WES) showed a heterozygous mutation of the GJB2 gene (NM_004004.6: exon2: c.109G > A). In addition, the results of our literature review showed that the presence of a classical sSMC was the most frequent cytogenetic abnormality in CES (82%). 63% of cases were in a homogenous state and 37% of cases were in a mosaic state. 72% of cases had a 1-2 Mb duplication. In the majority of CES patients the breakpoints in chromosome 22 are localized to a 50 kb region (18610000_18660000 bp). The CES critical region (CESCR) may be further delimited to a 0.3 Mb region (17799398_18111588 bp). Within this region CECR2, SLC25A18, ATP6V1E1, and BCL2L13 are strong candidate genes for causing the main CES phenotype. The ear anomalies are the most frequent features in CES patients (89%) and hearing loss was present in 36% of CES patients. CONCLUSIONS: The phenotypic features in CES are highly variable. Our findings expand the symptom spectrum of CES and lay the foundation for better delineating the clinical phenotype, molecular cytogenetic features associated with CES and genotype-phenotype correlations. We recommend performing WES to rule out the involvement of other genetic factors in the patient's phenotype. In addition, our findings also highlight the need for genetic counseling and recurrence risk assessment.

Hepatozoonosis is a tick-borne infection caused by protozoan species of the Hepatozoon genus in the family Hepatozoidae. This study aimed to determine the presence and prevalence of Hepatozoon spp. in domestic cats and their ticks, to characterize the genotypes, to reveal phylogenetic relationships, and to assess the risk factors associated with infection. Blood samples were collected in EDTA tubes from 311 cats that were brought to the Veterinary Faculty, Animal Hospital for treatment or routine control purposes. Smears were prepared from the buffy coat and examined microscopically for the presence of Hepatozoon spp. gamonts. Ticks were collected during the clinical examination of the cats and the species were identified. Genomic DNA obtained from buffy coats and ticks were analyzed using PCR analyses targeting the 18S rRNA gene region of Hepatozoon spp. The results showed that Hepatozoon spp. gamonts in neutrophils were determined in five samples as 1.6 % (5/311). A total of 58 (18.64 %, 58/311) were positive for the PCR analyses. Twelve ticks were collected from the cats, and all were identified as Rhipicephalus turanicus. Hepatozoon spp. were found in seven (58.3 %) ticks by molecular analyses. Sequence analysis of the 18S rRNA gene region of 58 positive isolates revealed the presence of H. felis (n = 25, 43.1 %) and H. silvestris (n = 33, 56.9 %) species in cats and H. felis in Rh. turanicus (n = 7). This study also presents the first report of H. silvestris in domestic cats from Türkiye. Phylogenetic analyses showed that our H. felis isolates clustered in H. felis genotype I and our H. silvestris were stated in the same cluster with Italian isolates.
