OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present prospective study was to evaluate the colour stability of 3D-printed non-invasive restorations after 24 months in vivo. METHODS: The study included 29 patients, who received 3D-printed restorations made of a computer-aided design (CAD) / computer aided-manufacturing (CAM) hybrid material (n=354). Restoration colour of 190 restorations was measured using a spectrophotometer. By applying the CIELAB system, *L (lightness), a* (red-green) and b* (blue-yellow) values were recorded. An evaluation of the colour differences (ΔE) after 6, 12 and 24 months was conducted. RESULTS: Analysis of colour differences of 3D-printed restorations showed continuous discolouration of the restorations. After one year 34% and after two years 18% of the restorations were rated alpha or bravo, indicating no or hardly visible colour change. After two years, 54% of the evaluated restorations yielded a colour difference with ΔE > 6.8 (delta). More than 82% of the evaluated restorations showed values between ΔE 3.8 - 6.8 (charlie) and ΔE ˃ 6.8 (delta) after two years. CONCLUSIONS: 3D-printed non-invasive restorations showed an overall reduced colour stability after 24 months in vivo. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The present study provides first clinical data regarding 3D-printed restorations. These restorations are recommended for a wearing time of about 6 months.

BACKGROUND: Indirect restorations are a staple restorative option in dentistry due to their versatility, exceptional aesthetics, and desirable strength and longevity. Metal ceramics and all ceramics are the material of choice for permanent restorations but come with certain disadvantages, such as chipping, fracture, and wear of the antagonist tooth or restoration. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and indirect composite resins are commonly used materials due to their favourable properties for temporary restorations, but lately, they have been chosen as the restorative material of choice for implant-supported full-mouth rehabilitations. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the colour stability and surface roughness of PMMA and indirect composite resins under both ageing and non-ageing conditions. This would greatly help a clinician in choosing materials depending on the clinical scenarios. AIM: This study aims to evaluate the colour stability and surface roughness of PMMA and indirect composite resins with and without ageing. METHODS: Specimens of PMMA and indirect composite resins were fabricated and subjected to an ageing process involving thermocycling in the TW-C4.4 (Tae-Won Tech, Incheon, Korea) and immersion in a staining solution. Colour stability was assessed using a spectrophotometer (SpectraMagic NX, RM2002QC, Konica Minolta Corp., Ramsey, Japan), and surface roughness was measured using a stylus profilometer (Mituyoto, Mituyoto Corporation, Kawasaki, Japan). Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 24 (Released 2016; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York) to determine significant differences between materials and ageing effects. RESULTS: PMMA exhibited significantly higher colour changes and increased surface roughness post-ageing compared to indirect composite resins. The findings underscored PMMA's susceptibility to discolouration and surface degradation under thermal stress conditions. CONCLUSION: PMMA demonstrates inferior colour stability and increased surface roughness following thermocycling compared to indirect composite materials, suggesting careful consideration in material selection for provisional restorations. Further research should explore additional ageing processes and materials to enhance understanding and improve clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Identifying the best strawberries to produce colour stable nectars is a priority for the juice industry. Although riper strawberries produce nectars with better colour stability, variability between cultivars means that surface colour cannot be used as a single quality attribute to determine stability. Conductivity and bio-impedance measurements can be used to differentiate ripeness of strawberries. The commercially available PEF Control System (ELEA) can measure cell disruption by measuring conductivity at different frequencies. Updated software measured strawberry conductivity at 121 frequencies between 100 Hz and 1 MHz to determine whether conductivity at these frequencies could differentiate ripeness, and be compared with the colour acceptance and stability of nectars produced from these strawberries. RESULTS: A high-low ratio (HLR) was calculated by dividing the conductivity at frequency 1 MHz by conductivity at 1 kHz. HLR could be used to separate five strawberry ripeness stages, with decreasing HLR associated with increasing ripeness. HLR was then compared with the colour of nectars produced from these strawberries. Although there was a good correlation between HLR and an acceptable colour to consumers on initial production (r = -0.823, P < 0.001) and after 12 weeks of storage (-0.759, P < 0.001), cultivars differed greatly in both HLR and colour stability. Additionally, HLR had a strong correlation with firmness. CONCLUSION: The PEF Control System could be used to differentiate ripeness of strawberries by HLR, and therefore was associated with colour stability. However, no additional information on colour stability was gained from conductivity beyond what could already be deduced from differentiating ripeness based on surface colour. © 2024 The Author(s). Medium voltage electrical stimulation and wet ageing periods effects on the carcasses and meat quality of Australian rangeland goats were investigated. 64 rangeland goats were slaughtered as 2 equal consignments, wherein half were exposed to post-dressing electrical stimulation (300 V, 500 ms pulse width, 45 s) and half were not (control). Carcass and pH decline parameters and glycogen concentration were recorded. At 24 h post-mortem, fresh colour was measured and longissimus lumborum muscles (LL) removed. Within carcass, paired LL were halved and allocated to each of 4 ageing periods (1, 2, 4, or 21 d). There were no significant effects from electric stimulation on LL pH at 18 °C, LL temperature at pH 6, LL pH at 24 h post-mortem, semitendinosus pH at 24 h post-mortem, and LL glycogen concentration. There were no significant interactions between stimulation and ageing period on cooking loss, particle size, purge loss, sarcomere length, shear force, and ultimate pH. Independent to stimulation, shear force, particle size, and cooking values declined as ageing period increased. Purge loss was highest after 21 d of ageing. Colour stability was unaffected by ageing, although all CIE colour coordinates varied across the 74 h total retail display period. There were negative linear relationships found between LL glycogen concentrations and LL temperature at pH 6, ultimate pH, and sarcomere length. These findings suggest there to be little benefit to post-dressing electrical stimulation of rangeland goat carcasses, when applied independent to or in combination with ageing.

This study compared carcasses as well as the quality and mineral concentration of meat from lambs extensively grazing perennial wheat with clover (PW + C), serradella (PW + S), lucerne (PW + L), or a mineral salt supplement (PW + Min). A split-plot design was used, wherein 3 crossbred ewe lambs (n = 72 in total) (sub-plots) grazed each of 4 forage types (plots), that were replicated across 6 locations (blocks). The feeding study concluded after 96 d, when all the lambs were slaughtered. The left longissimus lumborum muscles (LL) were collected and wet aged for either 5 or 56 d post-mortem. Lambs grazing PW + Min were found to produce carcasses with lower dressing percentage values to those grazing the other forage types (P = 0.037). The LL of lambs grazing PW + L had the lowest crude protein values (P = 0.015). Forage type by ageing period interactions did not affect meat quality. The 56 d ageing period resulted in higher purge loss (P < 0.001) and TVB-N values (P < 0.001) and a decline in shear force (P < 0.001) compared to the 5 d ageing period. The other carcass and meat quality parameters were not affected by forage type; including hot carcass weight, pH decline parameters, eye muscle area, cooking loss, intramuscular fat, sarcomere length, colour stability, and concentrations of calcium, iron, magnesium, sodium, and zinc in the LL. These findings confirm that perennial cereal production systems, that include legume forages with contrasting protein, energy, and micronutrient profiles, can deliver comparable lamb carcasses and meat quality.

Objectives: The aim of this article was to compare the colour stability of short fibre-reinforced computer-assisted design/computer-assisted manufacturing (CAD/CAM) composite (SFRC CAD) to commercially available CAD/CAM materials following prolonged immersion in a variety of beverages. Furthermore, the influence of the polishing technique was evaluated. Materials and methods: A total of 120 rectangular specimens (10 mm length × 14 mm width × 2 mm thickness) were prepared from SFRC CAD, IPS e-max, Cerasmart 270, Celtra Duo, Enamic, and Brilliant Crios. The specimens underwent polishing through either a laboratory polishing machine equipped with 4000-grit silicon carbide paper or chairside polishing using Sof-Lex spiral. Twenty specimens of each tested CAD/CAM material were randomly divided into four groups (n = 5) based on the staining solution used in order to evaluate the colour stability of the materials. Group 1: distilled water, Group 2: coffee, Group 3: red wine, Group 4: coke. Using a spectrophotometer, the colour changes (∆E) of all CAD/CAM materials were assessed at baseline, and after 1 and 12 weeks of staining. Three-way analysis of variance was used to analyse the data (α = 0.05). Results: The staining solution and material type showed a significant influence on the CAD/CAM specimens' colour stability (p < 0.05), while polishing method had no significant influence (p > 0.05). The average ∆E values for specimens submerged in wine were considerably higher (p < 0.05) than those for the other solutions. SFRC CAD, Cerasmart 270, and Enamic displayed the highest ∆E values in wine (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The colour stability of tested SFRC CAD was comparable to other composite-based CAD/CAM materials, while IPS e.max exhibited the highest level of colour stability.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate and compare the chemical and optical stability of four restorative composite materials: two injectable resins, one flowable resin and one compomer. METHODS: Two injectable nano-filled composite resins: G-aenial Universal (GU) and Beautifil Injectable XSL (BI), a flowable composite resin: Filtek Supreme Flowable (FS) and a compomer: Dyract Flow (DF), in A2 shade were tested and compared. Water sorption and solubility were conducted according to ISO4049:2019 standard; ICP-OES and F-ion selective electrode were used to test the elemental release; Degree of conversion (DC) was obtained by using FTIR; water contact angle was obtained by static sessile drop method, and a spectrophotometer was used for optical properties (ΔE⁎, ΔL⁎ and TP). SPSS 28.0 was used for statistical analysis and the significant level was pre-set as α = 0.05. RESULTS: GU performed the best in water sorption and solubility, FS had the lowest elemental release, the best colour stability, and the highest DCIM and DC24-h. DF, the compomer had the lowest, and GU and BI, the injectable composites had the largest water contact angle, respectively. Correlations were found between water sorption and water solubility. CONCLUSIONS: The four composite restorative materials showed different chemical and optical behaviours. Overall, composite resins performed better than compomer, while additional laboratory and in vivo tests are necessary to obtain a more comprehensive comparison between injectable and flowable composite resins. Wsp and Wsl are influenced by many common factors, and the values are highly positively related. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: A comprehensive understanding of materials is crucial before selecting materials for clinical practice. Composite resins rather than compomers are recommended because of their exceptional properties, which make them eligible for a wide range of clinical applications and an elongated lifespan.

OBJECTIVE: Colour stability is important in the long-term aesthetic success of restorative materials and is affected by both internal and external factors. Internal discolourations are due to the properties of the restorative materials. External discolourations can be associated with frequent consumption of food and beverages and the use of suspensions or syrups containing colourants/additives. Fluoride varnish application has an important place in preventive dentistry. The purpose of the research was to examine the protective effect of fluoride varnish application on the colour change on polyacid-modified composite resin restorative materials caused by the use of various paediatric drugs. METHODS: Two hundred ten discs were prepared from polyacid-modified composite resin material and divided into two groups: flouride varnish was applied to one group and flouride varnish was not applied to the other group. The groups were further divided into seven subgroups and the samples were kept in artificial saliva, amoxicillin + clavulanic acid, cefuroxime axetil, clarithromycin, paracetamol, ibuprofen, and iron supplement drug solutions. The colour change values of the discs were measured using a spectrophotometer device before immersion in the drug solutions and on the 7th, 14th, 21st, and 28th days after the immersion. The obtained data were calculated and statistically evaluated using IBM SPSS V23 software. RESULTS: It was found that the application of fluoride varnish in the iron supplement drug group prevented the colour change of the polyacid-modified composite resins for 28 days. In the amoxicillin + clavulanic acid, cefuroxime axetil, and paracetamol groups, the fluoride varnish did not prevent colour change in the polyacid-modified composite resin restorative materials at the end of the 14th day. CONCLUSION: It is thought that fluoride varnish application may be beneficial as a preservative in the colour change of polyacid-modified composite resins due to the use of various paediatric drugs, and this protective feature may be effective for a specific period of time.

AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the discolouration resistance of attachments made of composites having different physical properties, filler ratios and viscosity through the simulated environment and conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seventy-two extracted human teeth were aligned to simulate upper and lower dental arches. The attachments were prepared according to the guides determined by ClearCorrect. Three different composite groups were used for attachments preparation: Aligner Connect, G-Aenial Universal Injectable, and Tetric Prime and Tetric Evoflow combination. Dental models and aligners were kept in artificial saliva throughout the experiment of 96 weeks. The aligners were also subjected to 2308 thermal cycles and insertion and removing procedures 840 times for each period of 12 weeks. Afterwards, the models were kept in coffee and red wine solutions. Colour measurements were made with Vita Easy Shade 4.0 at 12th, 24th, 48th and 96th simulated weeks. RESULTS: No significant difference in discolouration was observed during thermal cycle application of 12th and 24th week experimental periods. In the later periods, discolouration was observed in the composite materials, and G-Aenial Universal Injectable was less coloured than the other samples. The composite samples were more coloured in proportion to their residence time. The G-Aenial Universal Injectable was more affected by wine solution, and Tetric Prime and Tetric Evoflow combination were more affected by coffee solution. CONCLUSIONS: Viscosity, resin matrix content and nature of inorganic filler particles of the composite materials significantly affect the colour changing properties of them due to the long-term ageing and exposure to colouring agents.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of mouthwashes on the optical properties of resin cement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and 60 resin cement discs (6x2mm) were produced from 4 different brands of resin cement (Panavia V5, Estecem II, RelyX Veneer, NX3) with the help of a Teflon mould. The discs were divided into 4 subgroups, 1 of which served as the control group, to be immersed in mouthwashes after measuring the initial L, a, and b values on white and black backgrounds. Colour measurements were repeated after the 1st and 7th days. The collected data were used to calculate the ∆E00 value to measure colour stability, the translucency parameter (TP00), and the contrast ratio parameter (CR) to compare translucency change. Data were statistically analysed using mixed-design analysis of ANOVA and the Bonferroni-Dunn test. Repeated measures ANOVA was used for dependent results (α = 0.05). RESULTS: On the ∆E00, TP00, and CR parameters; the joint effect of resin groups, mouthwash groups, and measurement times were found to be statistically significant. The ∆E00 (colour difference) parameter; the joint effect of resin groups, mouthwash groups, and measurement times was found to be statistically significant. The TP00; the joint effect of resin groups, mouthwash groups, and measurement times were found to be statistically significant. The CR parameter; the joint effect of resin groups, mouthwash groups, and measurement times was found to be statistically significant. In the Estecem II (Tokuyama) group, the means of Listerine Cool Mint (Johnson & Johnson) was above acceptable limits in both time periods. In the Panavia V5 (Kuraray Noritake) group, the color change was above acceptable limits in all time periods and in all mouthwash groups. Among the resin materials used, Estecem II (Tokuyama) shows the most color change. Listerine Cool Mint (Johnson & Johnson) caused more color change than other mouthwashes at all times. CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this study; the colour stability and translucency value of resin cement depend on both the resin cement content and the mouthwash. Long-term use of mouthwash may adversely affect the optical properties of the resin cement. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Clinicians should take into account the fact that mouthwash use and the composition of the resin cement employed will have an impact on the colour of laminate veneers.

AIM:  To investigate the color stability of light-cured (LC) restorative material in different pediatric drug formulations. METHOD:  Two distinct restorative materials, specifically LC resin and LC glass ionomer cement (GIC), were employed to create 88 disc-shaped specimens. These comprised 44 specimens fabricated from each material. Each specimen had a diameter of 5 mm and a height of 3 mm. To conduct the experiment, specimens were randomly allocated into four experimental groups, each containing 11 specimens made of each material. This division was accomplished through the use of a stratified random sampling method. The five experimental groups and their respective liquid medications were as follows: Group 1 - montelukast sodium and levocetirizine dihydrochloride syrup, Group 2 - cefixime, Group 3 - sodium valproate, and Group 4 - metronidazole. To ensure thorough exposure to the medications, all samples underwent a two-minute agitation cycle, which was repeated every 12 h over the course of one week. Following the immersion period, the color stability of all specimens was assessed using a spectrophotometer. The data obtained from the color stability measurements were subjected to statistical analysis using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by a post hoc test. The aim was to determine whether significant differences in color stability were observed among the groups studied. RESULTS:  The mean values and standard deviations of ΔE were calculated. The highest values of ΔE were observed in Group 3 (4.70 ± 1.89), followed by Group 4 (4.04 ± 2.10). Conversely, the lowest ΔE values were observed in Group 2 (3.23 ± 2.02) and Group 1 (3.24 ± 2.31). The calculated p-value was 0.298, and the F-value was 1.269. CONCLUSION:  This study concludes that both restorative materials, LC composite and LC GIC, are susceptible to discoloration. Sodium valproate exhibited the greatest staining effect on both materials. Conversely, cefixime had the least impact on the color of the LC composite, whereas montelukast had the least effect on the color of LC GIC.

Facial prostheses are created from special elastomers modified for their specific physical and mechanical properties; however, they also show two common major clinical problems: gradual discolouration of the prosthesis over time in service environment and deterioration of static, dynamic, and physical properties. As a result of external environmental factors, facial prostheses may become discoloured and discolour by changing colour from intrinsic and extrinsic colouring, and this is associated with the intrinsic colour stability of elastomers and colourants. Thus, in this in vitro study, a comparative evaluation of the effect of outdoor weathering on the colour stability of A-103 and A-2000 room-temperature vulcanised silicones used for maxillofacial prosthesis was conducted. To accomplish this study, a total of 80 samples were fabricated, 40 samples of each material were grouped as clear (20) and pigmented (20). These samples were mounted on wooden board and the assembly was placed on the roof of the dental school from October 2021 to March 2022. To maximise the amount of sunlight on the specimens, the exposure rack was set on five 68° angles from horizontal and also to prevent standing water. The specimens were left uncovered during exposure. The testing of samples was conducted with the help of a spectrophotometer. The colour values were recorded in the CIELAB colour system. It describes the three colour coordinates (colour values) x, y, and z in three new reference values of L, a, and b, aiding in numerically classifying colour differences. After 2, 4, and 6 months of weathering, testing was conducted using a spectrophotometer and the colour change (ΔE) was calculated. The A-103 RTV silicone group with pigmentation showed the maximum change in colour after six months of environmental conditioning. The data for colour difference within groups were analysed using a one-way ANOVA test. Tukey's post hoc test assessed the pairwise mean comparison's contribution to the overall significant difference. The nonpigmented A-2000 RTV silicone group showed the maximum change in colour after six months of environmental conditioning. After 2, 4, and 6 months of environmental conditioning, pigmented A-2000 RTV silicone showed better colour stability than A-103 RTV silicone. The patients requiring facial prosthesis do need to work on outdoor fields, and thus weathering will have deleterious effects on such prosthesis. Hence, the selection of appropriate silicone material with respect to the Al Jouf province region is crucial, which includes economic, durable, and colour stability.

Objectives An ideal restorative material should be capable of supplanting the biological, functional, and aesthetic qualities of a healthy tooth structure. There has always been a search for optimal and aesthetically pleasing restorative materials. This study aims to evaluate the surface roughness and colour stability of three nanohybrid composite resins post-exposure to mouth rinse and colouring beverages. Methods One hundred and twenty specimens of dimension 10 mm x 8 mm x 1 mm were randomly allocated into three equal-sized groups and fabricated using three different nanohybrid composites (Group A: Filtek Z250 XT, Group B: Tetric N-Ceram, and Group C: Solare Sculpt). Sixty samples, comprising 20 from each group, were examined for colour stability and 60 for surface roughness after exposure to chlorhexidine and coffee. Baseline and post-exposure readings of the surface roughness and colour absorbance of the specimens were obtained by atomic force microscopy and spectrophotometer, respectively. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test followed by a post hoc Tukey's test and an independent t-test were used for data analysis, considering a p-value<0.05 as significant. Results Irrespective of the composite, the surface roughness and colour change were substantially higher in the samples exposed to coffee (p-value<0.01). Filtek Z 250XT showed significantly minor changes in colour and surface roughness, followed by Solare Sculpt and Tetric N-Ceram (p-value<0.05). Conclusion Coffee caused more surface roughness and colour changes compared to chlorhexidine. Filtek 250 XT showed minor changes in colour and surface roughness on exposure to both solutions.

Edible films were obtained from the aqueous binary 75/25 blends of polysaccharides (carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), gum Arabic (GAR), octenyl succinic anhydride starch (OSA), and water-soluble soy polysaccharides (WSSP)) and gelatin (GEL) supplemented with increasing concentrations (0, 0.25, 0.5, and 1% w/w) of water-soluble AstaSana (AST) astaxanthin. The AST-loaded films were red and exhibited a grainy microstructure and reduced transparency. The CMC- and WSSP-based films were the best UV-C blockers. After the incorporation of 1% AST, the antiradical activity of the films increased by 1.5 times (~25 percentage points) compared to the controls. The tensile strength (TS) of the CMC-containing films was much higher than those of the other films (36.88-43.04 vs. 2.69-15.62 MPa). AST decreased the TS of the CMC/GEL film (by ~11-14%) but improved the mechanical cohesiveness of the GAR/GEL film (by ~50%). The storage test (at 25 °C and 60 °C, no light access) revealed that the CMC- and GAR-based films exhibited the lowest colour change. Furthermore, at the elevated temperature, the films with higher AST concentration exhibited a better ability to maintain their colour. The WSSP/GEL films were the most prone to darkening and yellowing, possibly due to the Maillard reaction. Moreover, these films had the weakest antiradical activity.

This study investigated the colour stability of three dimensional (3D)-printed and conventional denture teeth after immersion in different colourants. A total of 60 artificial maxillary central incisors were selected from three types of materials: 3D-printed dental resin (NextDent, 3D Systems, Soesterberg, The Netherlands), prefabricated acrylic teeth in Ivostar Shade (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), and SpofaDent Plus in shade A2 (SpofaDental, Jicín, Czechia). These were immersed in four types of colourants at room temperature (23 °C ± 1 °C), including artificial saliva (pH = 6.8) as a control group, coffee, red wine, and Coca-Cola (n = 5). The temperature and the pH of the colouring agents were maintained throughout all immersion periods. After 7 days (T1), 14 days (T2), and 21 days (T3), the ∆E values were measured with a SpectroShade Micro (SpectroShade, Oxnard, CA, USA) spectrophotometer. Their means were then calculated and compared by two-way ANOVA. The independent factors, immersion time and different staining solutions, as well as the interaction between these factors, significantly influenced ΔE. The highest and the lowest mean ∆Es were recorded for prefabricated teeth in red wine, and 3D-printed teeth in artificial saliva, respectively. All the specimens demonstrated an increased colour change at T1 compared to T3, and the difference in mean ∆E was statistically significant.

This study aimed to evaluate the colour stability of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) denture base reinforced with ZrO2 nanoparticles, E-glass fibres, and TiO2 nanoparticles at various concentrations over 180-day storage in Steradent™ (STD) denture cleaner or coffee (CF). A total of 130 disc-shaped specimens were fabricated at various filler concentrations and divided into four main groups to measure the colour changes. Groups Z, T, and E consisted of PMMA reinforced with ZrO2 nanoparticles, TiO2 nanoparticles, or E-glass fibre, respectively, while Group C consisted of PMMA specimens without filler served as the control group (n = 10). The three reinforced groups were further subdivided according to the filler content (n = 10) added to the PMMA (1.5%, 3.0%, 5.0%, and 7.0% wt.%). Half of the specimens were stored in STD, while the other half was stored in CF for 180 days. A Minolta Chroma Meter was used to measure the colour changes (ΔE) at 7, 30, 90 and then 180 days. The results were assessed using two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (RM-ANOVA) along with Bonferroni post hoc tests at a p ≤ 0.05 significance level. Significant different colour changes (ΔΕ) were observed between all tested groups and across different time points. TiO2-reinforced PMMA in STD/CF showed the lowest colour stability, while the E-glass fibre-reinforced PMMA in STD/CF showed the highest colour stability. Furthermore, coffee appeared to have the greatest impact on the colour change in comparison to the SteradentTM. The results indicated that the filler type and concentration, type of solution, and length of storage all affected the colour stability of the tested specimens.

Biocompatibility is important for the 3D printing of resins used in medical devices and can be affected by photoinitiators, one of the key additives used in the 3D printing process. The choice of ingredients must be considered, as the toxicity varies depending on the photoinitiator, and unreacted photoinitiator may leach out of the polymerized resin. In this study, the use of ethyl (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phenylphosphinate (TPO-L) as a photoinitiator for the 3D printing of resin was considered for application in medical device production, where the cytotoxicity, colour stability, dimensional accuracy, degree of conversion, and mechanical/physical properties were evaluated. Along with TPO-L, two conventional photoinitiators, phenylbis (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phosphine oxide (BAPO) and diphenyl (2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl) phosphine oxide (TPO), were considered. A total of 0.1 mol% of each photoinitiator was mixed with the resin matrix to prepare a resin mixture for 3D printing. The specimens were printed using a direct light processing (DLP) type 3D printer. The 3D-printed specimens were postprocessed and evaluated for cytotoxicity, colour stability, dimensional accuracy, degree of conversion, and mechanical properties in accordance with international standards and the methods described in previous studies. The TPO-L photoinitiator showed excellent biocompatibility and colour stability and possessed with an acceptable dimensional accuracy for use in the 3D printing of resins. Therefore, the TPO-L photoinitiator can be sufficiently used as a photoinitiator for dental 3D-printed resin.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different polishing systems on the colour stability of different laminate veneer blocks for chair-side CAD-CAM after ultraviolet (UV) ageing. METHODS: About 240 sample (13 × 13 × 0.7) were prepared from four different CAD-CAM blocks IPS e.max CAD (IP), IPS Empress CAD (IE), Mark II (M) and Lava Ultimate (LU)) with A1 shade. Each group was divided into five subgroups (n = 12) according to the control (C) and four different polishing system: Sof-Lex (S), Edenta (E), Identoflex (I) and Zircon Brite (Z). Surface roughnesses (Ra) were measured by a profilometer before and after polishing. The baseline colour values were recorded according to the CIELab system. The colour coordinates (L*, a* and b*) of the samples were measured before and after UV ageing, and colour differences (ΔE00) were calculated by using the CIEDE2000 colour difference formula. A two-way ANOVA and Tukey test methods were used to analyse the data (α = 0.05). RESULTS: A significant interaction was observed between CAD-CAM blocks and polishing system (p < 0.001). The higher Ra and colour difference was calculated in LU in the Z group after polished and the lower Ra and colour difference was calculated in the IP in the S group after polished. For the IP group, the glazing procedure showed higher Ra and ΔE values with Z group than polished S system, whereas there is no statistical differences. CONCLUSION: It is concluded that polishing with the Sof-Lex system improves significantly smoothness and colour stability. However, there is no success in using the Zircon Brite polishing system.

This study investigated the CIELab colour, water holding capacity, texture and oxidative stability of sheep meat from different breeds, finishing feeds, and retail packaging methods. Leg primal cuts from a subset of Composite wether lambs (n = 21) and Merino wether yearlings (n = 21) finished on a standard diet containing grain and cereal hay, a standard diet with camelina forage, or a standard diet with camelina meal, were used in this study. Semimembranosus and Vastus lateralis were packaged in vacuum skin packaging (VSP), or modified atmosphere packaging with 80% O2 and 20% CO2 (HioxMAP), or with 50% O2, 30% N2, and 20% CO2 (TrigasMAP). Packaging had a greater effect (p < 0.001) on L*, a*, b*, hue, and chroma than the effects from breed and finishing feed. Purge loss was affected by packaging. Cooking loss was affected by breed for Semimembranosus and packaging for both muscle types. HioxMAP and TrigasMAP increased WBSF and Texture Profile Analysis hardness of the meat compared to VSP. Lipid oxidation, assessed by TBARS, were lower in camelina forage or camelina meal supplemented diets and TrigasMAP compared to standard diet and HioxMAP, respectively. Total carbonyl and free thiol content were lower in VSP. Thus, supplementing feed with camelina forage or meal and lowering oxygen content in retail packaging by TrigasMAP or VSP are recommended to ensure optimal sheep meat quality.

OBJECTIVES: This in-vivo clinical study provides subjective and objective documentation on colour stability of enamel after resin infiltration at a mean observation time of six years after treatment. METHODS: 76 teeth previously treated with ICON® due to hypomineralized lesions of enamel were recalled for a follow-up at the 1st Observation Unit of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Sciences, "Sapienza" University of Rome (Italy). Colour stability was assessed: i) subjectively by patients using FDI-colour matching criteria; ii) objectively by calculating CIEDE2000 colour differences between the affected/treated and sound enamel in each tooth at T0 (baseline), T1 (one year) and T2 (six years) based on spectrophotometric data. Analysis of correlation between FDI and CIEDE2000 data was performed. RESULTS: Two teeth were lost to follow-up prior to 72 months. No unwanted effects were reported by patients. Number of FDI scores 1 and 2 were 13.5%, 90.6% and 93.2% at T0, T1 and T2, respectively. ΔE00 was evaluated at 6.8 (SD3.8) at T0. ΔE00 was 5.8 (SD3.1) between T0 and T1 and 1.3 (SD0.6) between T1 and T2. ΔE00 reduction (T1-T0) was significantly but only fairly correlated with FDI scores at any follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that caries infiltration satisfactorily masks aesthetically relevant lesions after longer follow-up. Subjective and objective outcomes showed a fair correlation mainly for the initial masking effect. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This prospective clinical trial demonstrates the excellent subjective and objective colorimetric stability of enamel treated with ICON® 6 years after treatment.
