RESUMO

Omphalitis is the third most frequent disease in newborn calves after neonatal diarrhea and bovine respiratory disease (BRD), but limited data on the prevalence and risk factors are available in the literature. Failure of passive immunity transfer (FPIT) is recognized as a major risk factor for diseases and mortality in calves. However, the association between omphalitis and FPIT remains poorly described. To assess this association, 964 suckler beef calves from 22 farms were included in a longitudinal cohort study for 5 months. Each calf was examined twice (mean ages: 4.4 and 11.1 days old) to diagnose omphalitis through clinical examination and ultrasonographic evaluation (USE) if necessary. Measurements of the total solids percentage (TS-%Brix) and total protein (TP) were performed on the serum during the first visit to evaluate the calves' passive immunity status. FPIT (fair and poor) was defined as serum %Brix < 8.1 or TP < 5.1 g/dL; among calves with omphalitis, 14% had FPIT and among calves without omphalitis 12% had FPIT. The omphalitis prevalence was 32.3% in calves without any other disease (overall prevalence of 30.9%). No statistical association between the prevalence of omphalitis and FPIT was observed. Further research is needed to identify the risk factors and promote the prevention measures for omphalitis in cow-calf systems, such as calving difficulty, hygiene of housing, and navel disinfection.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Cow-calf production plays a significant role in the beef production chain. However, bacteria in these systems are not typically monitored for antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We determined the baseline level of AMR in fecal bacteria collected from preweaned calves prior to feedlot entry and evaluated the effects of type of graze and age on AMR occurrence. Two grazing experiments (16 cow-calf pairs each) were conducted on tall fescue or wheat. Fecal samples were cultured for the detection of tetracycline-resistant (TETr), third-generation cephalosporin-resistant (3GCr), and extended-spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli. Isolates were characterized for resistance to other antibiotics and resistance mechanisms. Concentrations (P < 0.001) and prevalence (P = 0.007) of TETrE. coli isolates were significantly higher in the calves (5.1 log CFU/g and 93%, respectively) than in the cows (4.4 log CFU/g and 80%, respectively). Wheat grazing did not affect TETr isolates phenotypically; however, it significantly expanded (P = 0.005) the resistant population carrying tet(A) over that carrying tet(B). Fecal prevalence of 3GCr and ESBL-producing isolates was 31.3 and 3.4%, respectively, with no significant effects of age (P = 0.340) or wheat grazing (P = 0.597). All 3GCr and ESBL-producing isolates were multidrug resistant (resistant to at least three antimicrobial classes). 3GCr isolates were positive for blaCMY-2 (73%) or blaCTX-M (27%), and blaCTX-M-15 was the most prevalent gene (94%, n = 17) among the CTX-M-positive isolates. Wheat grazing significantly expanded (P < 0.001) the 3GCr population carrying blaCTX-M and reduced the population carrying blaCMY-2. Five of the seven ESBL-producing isolates were positive for blaCTX-M. Our study revealed age-dependent occurrence of TETrE. coli and that wheat grazing expanded the resistant population carrying certain resistance genes. Cow-calf production is a significant reservoir for antibiotic-resistant bacteria of significant public health importance such as 3GCr and CTX-M ESBL-producing E. coli.

Many farms located in milk-producing regions in Brazil have turned from dairy to beef production systems. These business migrations have been done with no particular care or any use of technical assistance. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the economics aspects, such as viability and risk assessment of different cow-calf systems established in those regions. The work consisted of a multiple case study using three farms. The economic horizon lasted 36 months, with data collection obtained in periodic visits, using a pre-designed survey. Net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR) on investment were estimated. Further analysis of sensitivity was made for these indicators. All cow-calf systems were economically viable with positive NPV, with a discount rate of 6.0% per year. The economic viability of the cow-calf systems was more sensitive to investments in land and animals - sires and cows). The assessment of risks in these cow-calf systems showed them to be low, despite the possibility of changes in the market. The cow-calf systems, when submitted to technical assistance, may be an attractive option of investment compared to investing in saving account.(AU)
