RESUMO

Chronic recurrent itch and skin inflammation are prominent features of atopic dermatitis (AD), which is closely related to the immune response driven by T-helper type 2 (Th2) cells. The expression of interleukin 31 (IL-31) is positively correlated with the severity of dermatitis. Anti-IL-31 receptor α (IL-31RA) targeted drugs have been used to treat AD, however, they are expensive and have side effects. Fraxinellone (FRA) is one of the main limonoid components in the dried root bark of Dictamnus dasycarpus Turcz.; however, its anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effects on atopic dermatitis (AD) have not been previously reported. In this study, we investigated the anti-dermatitis effect of FRA and its potential mechanism of action using a 2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB)-induced AD-like mouse model and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated HaCaT cells. FRA significantly inhibited chronic pruritus, epidermal thickening, and inflammatory infiltration in AD mice. FRA not only inhibited the levels of IL-31 in the serum and lesioned skin of AD mice but also significantly downregulated the mRNA expression and protein levels of IL-31, IL-31RA, transient receptor potential (TRP) V1, and TRPA1 in the lesioned skin and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) of AD mice. In LPS-stimulated HaCaT cells, FRA inhibited the production of iNOS and COX2, as well as the protein levels of IL-31, IL-31RA, TRPV1 and TRPA1, showing significant anti-inflammatory effects. In summary, our findings suggest that FRA exerts antipruritic and anti-inflammatory effects in AD by regulating the IL-31 pathway, and may hold promise for the clinical treatment of AD.

Background: Eczema is a common inflammatory skin disease with a significant global health burden. Eczema has a significant impact on quality of life. Objective: We aimed to estimate the prevalence, severity, and risk factors associated with eczema among schoolchildren in Saudi Arabia. Methods: The standardized Global Asthma Network questionnaires and methodology were used to conduct a nationwide cross-sectional study across 20 regions in Saudi Arabia between March and April 2019. Data were collected from 137 primary schools and 140 intermediate schools by using a multistage stratified cluster sampling method. Results: The study included 3614 young children aged 6 to 7 years and 4068 adolescents aged 13 to 14 years. Current eczema was prevalent among 4.5% of the children and 5.1% of the adolescents. Severe eczema was reported in 0.8% and 0.9% of the young children and adolescents, respectively. Several factors showed significant association with eczema. Among the children, eczema was linked positively to having a history of chest infections and wheezing in early life, as well as to ever attending day care and current exposure to cats. Among the adolescents, the main potential risk factors included paracetamol use in the previous year, adherence to a lifestyle of vigorous physical activity, and current exposure to cats. Conversely, high consumption of nuts was found to be negatively associated with eczema. Conclusion: The prevalence of eczema in schoolchildren in Saudi Arabia is lower than the global average but within the average range for the Eastern Mediterranean region. Further studies in Saudi Arabia should be conducted to identify variation among different regions.

We present a case of iodine-induced allergic contact dermatitis in a 10-year-old child. The child had a superficial wound on the left knee from an injury and was treated with daily applications of povidone-iodine (PVP-I) ointment for three to four days. The child subsequently developed a worsening skin lesion that increased from an initial 2 cm to 10 cm, spreading over the upper part of the leg, accompanied by pain and scanty discharge. Referred to the dermatology department, the dermatologist diagnosed iodine-induced allergic contact dermatitis based on the clinical presentation and the absence of other oral or topical medications, as well as no history of allergy to any substances or medications. Discontinuation of the suspected PVP-I ointment led to complete healing within 10 days with the use of only an emollient. This case underscores the importance of recognizing iodine allergy as a potential complication when used in wound care, particularly in pediatric patients.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory-allergic skin disorder that causes pruritic and eczematous skin lesions. Effect of Codium fragile extract (CFE) on AD has not been reported yet. In this study, inhibitory effects of CFE against skin severity scores, skin lesions, AD characteristics, and histological features of BALB/c mice with AD caused by 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) were investigated. Results indicated that AD effects of CFE reduced body, skin, ear, spleen, thymus, and lymph node weights. Histopathological changes in skin reactions on the back and ears showed that CFE inhibited thickening of the epidermis and ear. Moreover, CFE reduced epidermal swelling and ear thickness compared with the DNCB group. These results suggest that CFE might be effective in alleviating AD with potential as a promising candidate for therapeutic and cosmetic treatment of inflammatory dermatitis. CFE may be useful in alleviating AD and could be a potential treatment for inflammatory dermatitis.

Background Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by intense itching and recurrent eczematous lesions. Important factors in the etiopathogenesis of AD include genetic predisposition, epidermal barrier dysfunction, immune dysregulation, and gut and skin dysbiosis. Probiotics could be a potential preventive strategy for allergies including AD through immune system modulation as well as enhancement of the epithelial barrier integrity. To further understand the role of probiotics in the management of AD, a Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices (KAP) survey was conducted. Materials and methods A steering committee comprising nine experts formulated consensus recommendations on the role of probiotics in the management of AD and associated flare-ups through the use of the Knowledge, Attitude, and Practices questionnaire while analyzing literature reviews and responses from a national panel consisting of 175 members. The evidence strength and quality were evaluated based on the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) criteria. The acceptance of expert opinions as recommendations was considered upon receiving an endorsement from ≥70% of the panelists, as indicated by a Likert scale. Results The national panel emphasized that the improvement in nutritional status, immunomodulatory properties, and beneficial effects on the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and skin support the use of probiotics in AD. The panel agreed that probiotics should be a part of the complementary therapy in the management of AD and associated flare-ups. Mostly, a probiotics supplementation duration of eight to 12 weeks is preferred by dermatologists. Probiotics, when used as an adjuvant therapy, may serve as a strategy to reduce steroid usage or maintenance therapy in high-risk cases with flares. Conclusion A Delphi-mediated KAP response provides a real-life approach to the use of probiotics in the management of AD. It suggests that probiotics could be useful as an adjuvant therapy in the management of AD and associated flare-ups when used along with traditional treatment.

Introduction: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common, chronic, recurrent inflammatory skin disease. To date, no meta-analysis have been conducted on the prevalence and risk factors of AD in children aged 1-7 years in Mainland China. Methods: We conducted a meta-analysis of the prevalence and risk factors of AD among children aged 1-7 years in China. Chinese and English publications were searched in Chinese and English databases on AD epidemiology published between 1999 and 2023. Two researchers independently screened the literature, extracted the data, and evaluated their quality. A meta-analysis was performed using a random-effects model (I2 > 50%) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the forest plots. Data were processed using the RevMan 5.3. Results: Nineteen studies (data from 127,660 samples) met the inclusion criteria. The pooled prevalence of AD in Chinese children aged 1-7 years was 8%. Over the last decade, the prevalence of AD has increased. The prevalence of AD among children in southern China was higher than that in northern China and was the highest at the provincial level in Zhejiang, Shanxi, and Anhui. The prevalence of AD was dependent on the family history of allergy, passive smoking, households with pets, plush toys, and residential area. Discussion: The prevalence of AD in children (age 1-7 years) in China has increased. Further studies are needed to monitor the prevalence of AD in Chinese children. Therefore, early prevention and screening should be performed for children with a family history of AD, and their living environment should be improved to reduce allergen stimulation, thus reducing the development of AD.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by intense pruritus and eczematous lesions, significantly impacting physical health and quality of life. The pathogenesis of AD involves genetic predisposition, immune dysregulation, and environmental factors, with a defective skin barrier playing a crucial role. Treatment options for AD include both topical and systemic therapies, with advanced treatments like Janus kinase inhibitors and biologics offering significant improvements but facing limitations in safety and dosing frequency. Extended half-life antibodies represent a promising advancement for the management of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, including AD. These antibodies, engineered for prolonged circulation and reduced dosing frequency, target key cytokines and immune pathways known to be involved in the pathogenesis of AD, offering potential for less frequent administration while maintaining efficacy. Currently, two such agents are in phase 2 trials. APG777, targeting interleukin-13 (IL-13), and IMG-007, targeting OX40 receptor, have shown promising preclinical and early clinical results. They demonstrated prolonged half-lives and the potential for less frequent dosage regimen, along with significant improvements in AD symptoms. These therapies could enhance patient adherence and reduce healthcare burdens by decreasing injection frequencies and clinic visits. As research continues, extended half-life antibodies could significantly improve AD management and patient quality of life. Further studies will determine the long-term safety and efficacy of extended half-life antibodies, with ongoing innovations in antibody engineering likely to broaden their applications and benefits.

Our aim is to determine the number of leukocytes, T lymphocytes and B lymphocytes and the expression of activation markers CD200 and CD23 on B lymphocytes in atopic dermatitis (AD) patients (treated and not treated with dupilumab) during the pollen season. We examined 29 patients not treated with dupilumab, 24 patients treated with dupilumab and 40 healthy subjects as a control group. The count of T and B lymphocytes and their subsets were assessed by flow cytometry. The non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis one-factor analysis of variance with post hoc by Dunn's test with Bonferroni's modification was used for statistical processing. Although there was a significant improvement in skin findings in patients treated with dupilumab, the changes in immunological profile show a persistent altered immune response characterized by dysregulation and overactivation of B lymphocytes. Dupilumab therapy leads to normalization of relative T regulatory lymphocytes and total memory B lymphocytes and to decreased count of absolute CD8+ T lymphocytes.Why carry out this study?Studies investigating the immunological profile of atopic dermatitis (AD) patients during the pollen season are rare. There are no studies investigating the count of B lymphocytes (CD5+, CD22+ and CD73+ B lymphocytes) and the expression of activation markers CD23 and CD200 on B lymphocytes and on their subsets during pollen season in AD patients treated and non-treated with dupilumab therapy.What was learned from the study?In atopic dermatitis (AD) patients with and without dupilumab therapy, we confirmed the significantly higher count of absolute neutrophils, absolute monocytes, absolute eosinophils, absolute basophils, non-switched B lymphocytes, transitional B lymphocytes, CD23 memory, naive, non-switched, switched and total CD23 B lymphocytes, the relative count of CD200 memory and CD200 switched B lymphocytes.In dupilumab treated patients, we confirmed the significantly higher count of relative eosinophils, relative CD16+ eosinophils, relative CD200 non-switched B lymphocytes and lower count of absolute CD8+ T lymphocytes. Further studies should focus on investigating the effect of dupilumab on CD8+ T lymphocytes and their subpopulations.In patients without dupilumab therapy, we confirmed the significantly higher count of relative neutrophils, relative T regulatory lymphocytes and total memory B lymphocytes.The changes in the count of CD5+, CD22+ and CD73+ B lymphocytes were not observed during pollen season in both groups of AD patients.

BACKGROUND: Dupilumab has been shown to be an effective treatment in moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD) and severe asthma (SA). However, comparative real-world analyses of adverse events (AE), particularly dupilumab-associated ocular surface disease (DAOSD), are lacking. OBJECTIVE: This is the first real-world study to provide insight into the prevalence of AEs associated with dupilumab in AD compared with SA. Secondary objectives were to assess the prevalence, onset and therapeutic strategies of DAOSD and evaluate dupilumab discontinuation rates. METHODS: Data from two daily practice registries including AD and SA patients receiving dupilumab treatment were analyzed. Adverse events, including DAOSD, were evaluated. RESULTS: In total, 322 AD and 148 SA patients were included. Headaches (23.6%), injection site reactions (10.1%), and influenza-like symptoms (13.5%) were more prevalent in SA patients. Interestingly, ocular AEs were significantly more prevalent in AD patients (62.1%, p < 0.001), including conjunctivitis (17.1%, p = 0.004). 88% AD and 47% SA patients with ocular AEs received one or more ophthalmic treatment(s). Additionally, 20% of AD and 17.6% of SA patients discontinued dupilumab treatment due to ocular AEs, while only 65% of these AD and none of these SA patients were referred to an ophthalmologist. CONCLUSION: The higher incidence of DAOSD in AD patients compared with SA patients in this real-world study highlights the importance of physician awareness, especially when prescribing dupilumab to AD patients. Conversely, the findings of this study help alleviate potential concerns about ocular AEs in patients with SA who do not have comorbid AD. Furthermore, the effective management of most ocular AEs with ophthalmic treatments suggests favorable tolerability of dupilumab in daily practice, and multidisciplinary collaboration is essential to proactively manage ocular AEs before discontinuing dupilumab.

Dupilumab was approved for the treatment of several dermatologic immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, such as atopic dermatitis and bullous pemphigoid; whereas omalizumab is the first biological agent which was approved to treat chronic spontaneous urticaria. None of the published meta-analyses has provided the sufficient data regarding the safety of these two biologics, especially regarding their potential serious adverse events (SAEs). The aim of this study was, to comprehensively evaluate the safety of the two biologics dupilumab and omalizumab. In this study, we included 32 randomized trials, and performed meta-analyses on 113 types of SAEs regarding dupilumab and 61 types of SAEs regarding omalizumab. We identified that: (1) use of dupilumab was significantly associated with the lower incidence of atopic dermatitis, while use of omalizumab was significantly associated with the lower incidence of asthma; and (2) use of dupilumab was not significantly associated with the incidences of 112 other kinds of SAEs including various infectious diseases, while use of omalizumab was not significantly associated with the incidences of 60 other kinds of SAEs including various infectious diseases. This meta-analysis for the first time assessed the association between use of dupilumab or omalizumab and incidences of various SAEs, and identified that neither dupilumab use nor omalizumab use was associated with the increased risks of any SAEs including various infectious diseases. These findings further confirm the general safety of the two biologics dupilumab and omalizumab. This informs clinicians that there is no need to worry too much about the safety issues of these two biologics.

Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is one of the effective treatment methods for prostate cancer, often used with radiation therapy. Among the key ADT agents is leuprolide, a synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist, which effectively suppresses testosterone production which is a requisite for the growth and division of prostate cancer cells. However, leuprolide is associated with several well-known side effects and less common dermatological reactions. In this case, we present an 80-year-old male patient with stage IIB prostate cancer who developed diffuse maculopapular dermatitis following leuprolide acetate ADT. The patient first experienced mild dermatitis following the fifth monthly 7.5 mg leuprolide injection before it developed into a general body rash after six injections. The dermatitis manifested on the patient's arms, thighs, calves, dorsum, and back of hands but sparing the abdomen, face, and neck. The pruritic dermatitis was managed successfully with a three-week course of prednisone which led to complete resolution without long-term sequelae. This case highlights the importance of recognizing and managing dermatological side effects associated with ADT. Clinicians should maintain an index of suspicion and act promptly when these side effects manifest. Systematic reporting and further research are essential to enhance patient safety and understanding of drug-related dermatological manifestations.

OBJECTIVES: Our study assessed the budget impact and cost per responder of upadacitinib15mg and 30 mg for moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (MS-AD) treatment fromsocial security and private health sector perspective in Argentina. METHODS: Abudget impact model was adapted to depict clinical and economic aspects oftreatment over a 5-years horizon time. Scenario analyses and deterministicsensitivity analyses were performed. A 16-weeks cost per responder model wasadapted based on a network meta-analysis. Primary analyses assessed the costper Eczema Area and Severity Index 50, 75 and 90 at week 16. RESULTS: The inclusion of upadacitinib 15 mg and 30 mg in the biological treatment mix forMS-AD was associated with an average budget saving per-member per-month ofU$S0.062 (social security) and U$S0.064 (private sector). Percentage ofpatients with access to treatment, acquisition cost of upadacitinib 30 mg andprevalence of MS-AD were the most influential parameters in the budget impactresults. At week 16, upadacitinib 30 mg was associated with the lowest numberneeded to treat and the lowest cost per responder for all outcomes. CONCLUSION: The introduction of upadacitinib in MS-AD treatment was associated with modestsavings for the social security and private payer budget in Argentina.

Whether childhood obesity or weight gain leads to the development of pediatric immune-mediated skin diseases remains unclear. We aimed to determine the associations between body mass index or body mass index changes and the development of 3 main immune-mediated skin diseases-alopecia areata, atopic dermatitis (AD), and psoriasis-by analyzing a longitudinal cohort of 2,161,900 Korean children from 2009 to 2020. The findings indicated that children who were obese had a higher risk of pediatric immune-mediated skin diseases than those with normal weight (P for trend < .01). An increase in body mass index was associated with a higher risk of AD, whereas a decrease in body mass index was correlated with a reduced risk of AD. Children who gained weight, transitioning from normal to overweight, exhibited a higher AD risk than those who maintained a normal weight (adjusted hazard ratio = 1.15, 95% confidence interval = 1.11-1.20). However, those who shifted from being overweight to achieving a normal weight (adjusted hazard ratio = 0.87, 95% confidence interval = 0.81-0.94) had a lower AD risk than children who were overweight who maintained their weight. In summary, early childhood obesity may increase the risk of pediatric immune-mediated skin diseases. Weight gain may increase AD risk, whereas weight loss may lower the risk.

OBJECTIVE: Two-sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) was employed to examine the association between lipidome and five inflammatory skin diseases. METHOD: To evaluate the association between various molecular subtypes of lipidome and the risk of five inflammatory skin diseases, we analyzed a comprehensive GWAS dataset comprising 179 lipidome. The Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization (TSMR) method was employed to investigate causal relationships. Heterogeneity and pleiotropy were assessed using Cochran's Q test, MR-Egger intercept test, and MR-PRESSO global test. Additionally, a sensitivity analysis was conducted to evaluate the influence of individual single nucleotide polymorphisms on Mendelian Randomization study. RESULTS: Using 179 serum lipidome as exposures and five common inflammatory skin diseases as outcomes, we investigated their associations in this large-scale study. Our findings reveal significant impacts of glycerophospholipids, glycerolipids, and sphingomyelins on inflammatory skin diseases. Glycerophospholipids were protective against pemphigus but predominantly posed risks for other inflammatory skin diseases. Specifically, phosphatidylcholine (16:0_0:0) exhibited the most significant risk association with lichen planus (OR = 1.25, 95% CI 1.11-1.40, P < 0.001). Conversely, glycerolipids showed no effect on lichen planus but were protective against pemphigus while potentially posing risks for other conditions. Triacylglycerol (46:2) showed the most substantial risk association with vitiligo (OR = 1.99, 95% CI 1.35-2.93, P < 0.001). Furthermore, sphingomyelins had no effect on atopic dermatitis but posed potential risks for other inflammatory skin diseases. Sphingomyelin (d40:1) notably emerged as a significant risk factor for pemphigus (OR = 1.91, 95% CI 1.37-2.66, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study has elucidated the potential harmful effects of glycerophospholipids, glycerolipids, and sphingomyelins on inflammatory skin diseases, while also providing valuable insights for future research into the pathophysiology, prevention and treatment of these conditions.

Probiotics have garnered increasing attention, particularly within the realm of atopic dermatitis (AD). Although classified as dietary supplements by the Food and Drug Administration, probiotics are being explored for their potential to modify immune system responses and aid in disease recovery. This review aims to provide a current understanding of probiotics, specifically various lactobacilli strains, as a therapeutic option in preventing and treating AD. The concept of the gut-skin axis has gained substantial recognition, emphasizing the complex relationship between the gut microbiome and skin health. Dysfunctional gut barriers and metabolites produced by gut microorganisms can exert profound influences on skin conditions, including AD. Lactobacilli species are particularly noteworthy for their resilience and stability within the gastrointestinal tract, making these bacteria ideal candidates for probiotic supplementation. Various lactobacilli strains (Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus reuteri, and Lactobacillus rhamnosus) were included in this study due to their current uses in mitigating AD symptomatology. This systemic review article aims to shed light on the potential of probiotics as a therapeutic approach for AD, highlighting their stellar safety profile and promising therapeutic efficacy. Given the compelling preliminary findings and the constraints associated with conventional treatments, probiotics, particularly lactobacilli strains, emerge as a considerable alternative or adjuvant option for individuals grappling with AD. Further exploration is imperative to establish probiotics as a promising therapeutic option, providing renewed hope for those seeking effective strategies for managing AD.

In patients with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (AD) showing an inadequate response to dupilumab 300mg/2weeks, few real-life studies reported the response to alternative regimen maintaining dupilumab. To assess and analyze the response to an increased dose of dupilumab or its combination with cyclosporin A (CsA), methotrexate (MTX), or itraconazole (ITRA), all adult AD patients from 7 French University Hospitals were retrospectively included if they achieved an inadequate response to dupilumab 300mg/2weeks and were subsequently treated with an increased dose of dupilumab (300mg every 7 or 10 days), or a combination of dupilumab 300mg/2weeks with CsA, MTX or ITRA. The response after 3 months, along with epidemiological, clinical, and therapeutic baseline characteristics, were collected. Overall, 68.75% of the 48 included patients achieved an improved response, including 45.8% of complete response (CR). No strategy proved significantly better. Patients showing an initial no response never achieved a further CR versus 52.4% of patients with an initial partial response (p = 0.025). Digestive intolerance and tachycardia led to MTX and ITRA discontinuation in 3 patients. Increasing the dose of dupilumab or combining it with CsA, MTX, or ITRA could be alternative and safe options, to be evaluated in further medico-economic studies.

CONTEXT: Derris reticulata Craib. and Glycyrrhiza glabra L., of the Fabaceae, have been used as active components in Thai herbal formulas for the treatment of fever and skin diseases. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the physicochemical and pharmacological properties of the developed herbal gel formulation containing the combined extract from D. reticulata stem wood and G. glabra root (RGF). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The potential of the herbal gel formulation containing RGF (8% w/w) as the active ingredient was studied by evaluating the anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-Staphylococcus aureus activities using quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction assay, spectrophotometric method, and broth microdilution technique, respectively. The reference standards for the biological testing included Nω-nitro-L-arginine (L-NA), ascorbic acid, catechin, and penicillin G. The stability study of the RGF herbal gel was performed by a heating-cooling test (at 45 °C for 24 h and at 4 °C for 24 h/1 cycle; for 6 cycles), and the bioactive marker compounds in the herbal gel were investigated by the HPLC technique. RESULTS: RGF showed promising pharmacological effects, particularly on its anti-inflammatory property (IC50 73.86 µg/mL), compared to L-NA (IC50 47.10 µg/mL). The RGF-containing gel demonstrated anti-inflammatory (IC50 3.59 mg/mL) and free radical scavenging effects (IC50 0.05-4.39 mg/mL), whereas it had no anti-S. aureus activity (MIC > 10 mg/mL). The active ingredient in the developed herbal gel significantly inhibited lipopolysaccharide-induced nitric oxide production by downregulating iNOS mRNA levels. The contents of the bioactive markers in the RGF gel (lupinifolin and glabridin) did not change significantly after stability testing. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The RGF-containing gel has potential to be further developed as an herbal product for the treatment of skin inflammation.

The present study aims to investigate the current trends in replacing conventional preservatives with multifunctional ingredients with antimicrobial properties for preservation of cosmetics for infants or sensitive population, to decrease their potential for contact dermatitis. We first reviewed the labels of cosmetics purchased from the Chinese market for conventional preservatives and multifunctional ingredients with antimicrobial properties, of which the actual contents were further quantified by chromatographic methods. We identified 7 traditional preservatives (phenoxyethanol, benzoic acid (salts), methylparaben, benzyl alcohol, sorbic acid (salts), propylparaben, and methylisothiazolinone), and 11 alternative ingredients with antimicrobial activities (ethylhexylglycerin, butylene glycol, caprylyl glycol, propylene glycol, 1,2-hexanediol, p-anisic acid, hydroxyacetophenone, pentylene glycol, decylene glycol, caprylhydroxamic acid, and aminomethyl propanol) in descending order of prevalence. The contents of all identified preservatives and ingredients were either below regulatory limits or in the range that is generally regarded to be safe. Further challenge with microorganisms indicated irrespective of the composition of preservation systems, product preservation could be compromised under test conditions. We conclude that multifunctional ingredients with antimicrobial properties in cosmetics have the potential to completely replace or significantly reduce the use of traditional preservatives while retaining comparative preservative efficacy. Future attentions may need to be shifted to the safety of those multifunctional ingredients with antimicrobial properties.
