OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was the association between the relationship between Dietary Quality Index-International (DQI-I) and Healthy Eating Index (HEI) and the urinary levels of F2alpha-isoprostane (F2a-IP) and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) was investigated as indicators of oxidative stress. RESULTS: Based on HEI (low, moderate, and good), the diet quality of both groups was classified as moderate. In all participants, HEI (ß=-0.29; P = 0.04) and DQI-I (ß=-0.46; P = 0.005) were inversely associated with 8-OHdG. Furthermore, a negative correlation was found between HEI (mean ß=-3.53; P = 0.04) and DQI-I (mean ß=-5.53; P = 0.004) with F2a-IP. The quality of the footballers' diet was higher than that of the control group. Following a high-quality diet, which is rich in antioxidants, is likely to effectively reduce oxidative stress.

BACKGROUND: Various foods and nutrients are linked with higher or lower risk of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), yet these associations are inconsistent across studies. Limited research has been done evaluating the association between diet quality and RA in a larger scale prospective study on postmenopausal women. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between dietary quality and risk of incident RA in postmenopausal women. DESIGN: This is a prospective cohort study as part of the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) with an average follow-up time of 8.1 years. Baseline diet was measured using a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Diet quality was evaluated by the Healthy Eating Index (HEI) - 2015 total score. In addition, intake of food groups/nutrients that align with HEI-2015 components was assessed. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: 109,591 postmenopausal women were included in this study, which was conducted at various clinical centers across the US with recruitment from 1993 to 1998. WHI participants who were missing outcome data, had unreliable/missing FFQ data, or had RA at baseline were excluded. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome measure is incident RA. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED: Multivariable Cox proportional regression analysis was performed evaluating the association of diet quality with self-reported physician-diagnosed RA after adjusting for age, race, ethnicity, education status, income, and body mass index (BMI). RESULTS: During 857,517 person-years of follow-up, 5,823 incident RA cases were identified. After adjustment for multiple comparisons, compared to quartile 1, quartiles 2, 3, and 4 of the HEI-2015 total scores were associated with a lower RA risk of 1%, 10%, and 19%, respectively (p-trend < 0.001). Greater consumption of total fruits (p-trend=0.014), whole fruits (p-trend<0.0002), total vegetables (p-trend=0.008), greens and beans (p-trend<0.0002), whole grains (p-trend=0.008), and dairy (p-trend=0.018) were significantly associated with lower rates of incident RA. Conversely, higher consumption of saturated fat (p-trend=0.002) was significantly associated with higher rates of incident RA. CONCLUSION: A higher quality diet reflected by higher HEI-2015 total scores was inversely associated with incident rheumatoid arthritis in post-menopausal women.

BACKGROUND: Poor-quality diets are a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases. Few studies in Mexico have tested whether higher expenditures are needed to purchase high quality food. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to assess how dietary quality for food purchases was associated with household food at home expenditures. DESIGN: This study is a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data from the National Household Income and Expenditure Survey (ENIGH 2018). PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: The study includes 74,469 households with information on food and beverages purchases in Mexico in 2018. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Quarterly household food expenditures by adult equivalent (AE) for all food groups that were scored in the Global Dietary Quality Score (GDQS) for food purchases expressed in dollars/quarterly/AE. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED: Adjusted generalized linear models were used to evaluate the association between GDQS for food purchases (expressed in tertiles: low-, mid-, and high-), and quarterly food expenditures. The analyses were performed at the national level, by place of residence and income quintile. RESULTS: At the national level, the difference in food expenditures between the high- and the low-GDQS group was +$13.85 dollars/AE. By place of residence, the difference between the high- and the low-GDQS group was +$17.31 dollars/AE in urban and +$5.12 dollars/AE in rural areas. For income quintile 1 (lowest) there was statistical difference of -$4.79 dollars/AE and for quintile 5 (highest) +$43.25. CONCLUSIONS: Quality of food purchases can be associated with higher or lower expenditures depending on the specific food purchased. High GDQS is associated with lower expenditures among the lowest-income households as they purchase less expensive options compared to high-income households.

BACKGROUND: A sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is a lifelong treatment that improves health and better outcomes are associated with follow-up. However, there is lack of access or high attrition to aftercare. This potentially contributes to sub-optimal dietary intake and a lack of evidence for nutrition interventions. The present study assessed the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a nutrition intervention to improve diet quality in Australian adults living with a SG. METHODS: Adults (n = 96) post-SG were recruited into a cross-sectional diet quality study, with 68 eligible for randomisation to an intervention or wait-list control group. Over 10 weeks, a Facebook group was used to post daily nutrition education. Feasibility outcomes included participant recruitment, engagement, retention and acceptability. Preliminary efficacy was assessed using change in Australian Recommended Food Score (ARFS). Linear mixed models were used to measure differences in mean outcome between the experimental groups over time. RESULTS: Sixty-eight participants (97% female) aged 48.2 ± 9.8 years, body mass index 33.1 ± 5.8 kg/m2, and mean ± SD ARFS 39 ± 9 points were randomised to the intervention, with 66% retention at 10 weeks. At follow-up, diet quality increased for the intervention group (mean ARFS, 95% confidence interval = 0.2 [-1.5 to 1.9]) and decreased for the control group (mean ARFS, 95% confidence interval= -2.0 [-5.2 to 1.2]) with no between group difference (p = 0.2). Participants (n = 30) rated the intervention positively. CONCLUSIONS: Recruiting and retaining adults post-SG into a nutrition intervention is feasible. Low-cost recruitment attracted strong interest from women to identify greater support to know what to eat following SG. A future fully powered trial to assess intervention efficacy is warranted.

Nutrition education and food resource management (FRM) can assist food-insecure individuals in acquiring healthy and affordable food. We aimed to assess the relationships between FRM skills and healthy eating focus with diet quality and health-related behaviors in low-income adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey of 276 low-income adults living in a low-food-access community in Northeast Connecticut. Through analysis of covariance, adults who usually or always had a meal plan, considered reading nutrition labels important, made a grocery list, were concerned about their food healthiness, and rated their diet quality as very good/excellent reported higher diet quality (frequency-based and liking-based scores) (p < 0.05 for all). Individuals who considered reading food labels very important and reported having a good diet reported less frequent pandemic-related unhealthy behaviors (consumption of candy and snack chips, soda or sugary drinks, weight gain, smoking) (p < 0.001). Furthermore, higher-frequency-based diet quality was associated with lower risk of overweight or obesity (OR: 0.37; 95% CI: 0.18, 0.76; p-trend < 0.01). Thus, FRM skills and healthy eating focus were associated with higher diet quality and healthier self-reported changes in diet, weight, and smoking behaviors during the pandemic.

Background: Although adolescents with obesity have an increased risk of cardiometabolic disease, a subset maintains a healthy cardiometabolic profile. Unhealthy lifestyle behaviors may determine cardiometabolic risk. We aimed to characterize the lifestyle behaviors of adolescents with obesity, compare differences between metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) and metabolically unhealthy obesity (MUO), and assess associations between lifestyle behaviors and cardiometabolic profiles. Methods: Participants aged 10-18 years with body mass index (BMI) ≥ 95th percentile were included. Dietary intake (DI) was estimated from 3-day food records, and diet quality (DQ) was assessed using the Healthy Eating Index-Canadian Adaptation. Physical activity (PA), body composition, anthropometrics, blood markers, and blood pressure (BP) were objectively measured. MUO was defined as having high triglycerides, BP, glucose, or low high-density lipoprotein. Regression analyses were performed between lifestyle behaviors and cardiometabolic markers. Results: Thirty-nine participants (BMI z-score 2.8 [2.5-3.5], age 12.5 [10.9-13.5] years, 56.4% female) were included. A high proportion of participants failed to meet lifestyle recommendations, particularly for DQ (94.7%, n = 36), fiber (94.7%, n = 36), and PA (90.9%, n = 30). No differences in lifestyle behaviors were found between MUO (59.0%, n = 22) and MHO (41.0%, n = 16). Protein intake was negatively associated with BMI and waist circumference z-scores, fat mass index, insulin resistance, low-density lipoprotein, and C-reactive protein, whereas higher DQ was associated with lower C-reactive protein. Higher light PA levels were associated with lower total cholesterol and triglycerides. Conclusion: Adolescents with either MUO or MHO displayed low adherence to DQ, DI, and PA recommendations; no differences in lifestyle behaviors were found. Protein intake, DQ, and PA were associated with a healthier cardiometabolic profile.

Background: Due to scarce epidemiologic data regarding the Prime Diet Quality Score (PDQS) and mental health disorders, this study aimed to investigate the association of PDQS with depression and anxiety symptoms in Iranian adults.Methods: This cross-sectional analysis was performed using the baseline data collected for the Isfahan functional disorders (ISFUN) cohort study. ISFUN was established in 2017 and enrolled apparently healthy adults, aged 18-65 years in Isfahan, Iran. Information on usual dietary intakes was collected using a validated Dish-based, 106-item food frequency questionnaire. The severity of depression and anxiety was assessed using a validated Iranian version of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale.Results: A total number of1892 participants were enrolled in the present study. In total, 54.50% of subjects were female. In the fully adjusted model, participants with PDQS lower than median compared with those with PDQS higher than median had higher risk of depression (OR = 1.62; 95% CI: 1.11, 2.37) and anxiety (OR: 1.57; 95% CI: 1.08, 2.27). In stratified analysis by sex, males with PDQS lower than median compared with those with PDQS higher than median had greater risk for depressive (OR: 1.57) and anxiety symptoms (OR = 1.52). However, in females, no significant association was found between PDQS and odds of depression, and anxiety in the fully adjusted model.Conclusion: We found evidence indicating a significant inverse association between PDQS and depression and anxiety symptoms among Iranian adults. Further studies, in particular with prospective design, are required to confirm these findings.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To investigate associations between Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) in the TAS1R and TAS2R taste receptors and diet quality, intake of alcohol, added sugar, and fat, using linear regression and machine learning techniques in a highly admixed population. METHODS: In the ISA-Capital health survey, 901 individuals were interviewed and had socioeconomic, demographic, health characteristics, along with dietary information obtained through two 24-h recalls. Data on 12 components related to food groups, nutrients, and calories was combined into a diet quality score (BHEI-R). BHEI-R, SoFAAs (calories from added sugar, saturated fat, and alcohol) and Alcohol use were tested for associations with 255 TAS2R SNPs and 73 TAS1R SNPs for 637 individuals with regression analysis and Random Forest. Significant SNPs were combined into Genetic taste scores (GTSs). RESULTS: Among 23 SNPs significantly associated either by stepwise linear/logistic regression or random forest with any possible biological functionality, the missense variants rs149217752 in TAS2R40, for SoFAAs, and rs2233997 in TAS2R4, were associated with both BHEI-R (under 4% increase in Mean Squared Error) and SoFAAs. GTSs increased the variance explanation of quantitative phenotypes and there was a moderately high AUC for alcohol use. CONCLUSIONS: The study provides insights into the genetic basis of human taste perception through the identification of missense variants in the TAS2R gene family. These findings may contribute to future strategies in precision nutrition aimed at improving food quality by reducing added sugar, saturated fat, and alcohol intake.

PURPOSE: Diet plays a fundamental role in promoting resilience against stress-related disorders. We aimed to examine the overall and sex-specific association between food groups and perceived stress in adults. METHODS: We analyzed the prospective data of 7,434 adults who completed both the 2011 and 2015 surveys of the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). The Diet Quality Questionnaire (DQQ) was used to code all the food items of 2011 dietary intake into 29 food groups, and perceived stress in 2015 was measured using a 14-item perceived stress scale (PSS-14). Univariate analysis and logistic regression models were used to examine the relationship between food groups and perceived stress. RESULTS: People who perceived a higher level of stress (PSS-14 total score > 25) made up 41.5% and 45.1% of the male and female groups, respectively (χ2 = 9.605, p = 0.002). Individuals with increased intake of food groups such as legumes, other vegetables, other fruits, yogurt, poultry, fish & seafood, fluid milk, and fruit juice were less likely to experience a higher level of psychological stress (OR range: 0.544-0.892, p < 0.05). Additionally, we found sex-specific associations between food groups and perceived stress. The difference in the proportion of food groups, such as fluid milk and fish & seafood, between the two stress groups in men was statistically significant (p < 0.025). In the female group, the distribution of eight food groups, like legumes and nuts & seeds, between the two stress groups was statistically significant (p < 0.025). CONCLUSION: This study indicated that food groups were differentially associated with perceived stress.

Better diet quality regardless of community food access was associated with a higher likelihood of glycemic control in early pregnancy among nulliparous individuals with pregestational diabetes. These findings highlight the need for interventions that address nutrition insecurity for pregnant individuals living with diabetes.

With emerging Asian-derived diet quality indices and data-driven dietary patterns available, we aimed to synthesize the various dietary patterns and quantify its association with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) among Asian populations. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science for observational studies in South, Southeast, and East Asia. Dietary patterns were grouped "high-quality," which included high intakes of three or more of the following food groups: 1) fruits and vegetables, 2) whole grains, 3) healthy protein sources (legumes and nuts, fish and seafood, low-fat dairy, and lean meat and poultry), and 4) liquid plant oils. High-quality patterns were further subcategorized based on their derivation methods: non-Asian indices, Asian indices, data-driven patterns, and plant-based indices. Dietary patterns were grouped "low-quality," which included high intakes of two or more of the following: 5) ultraprocessed food, 6) beverages and foods with added sugars, 7) foods high in salt, and 8) alcoholic beverages. Data-driven dietary patterns characterized by animal food sources were labeled "animal-based," and studies using dietary diversity scores were labeled "diet diversity indices." Dietary patterns that could not be meaningfully categorized were summarized narratively. Study-specific effect estimates were pooled using a random-effects model. Forty-one studies were included in this review. Higher adherence to high-quality dietary patterns in the top compared with bottom tertile defined by non-Asian indices (RR: 0.78; 95% CI: 0.69, 0.88; GRADE: moderate), Asian indices (RR: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.79, 0.90; GRADE: low), and data-driven patterns (RR: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.74, 0.89; GRADE: moderate) were associated with lower CVD risk. Plant-based, low-quality, animal-based, and diet diversity indices dietary patterns were not associated with CVD. Associations of Asian diet quality indices and CVD risk were weaker than those with non-Asian indices, highlighting the need for current Asian diet quality criteria to be updated to better capture the impact of diet on CVD. BACKGROUND: Both overweight/obesity and a Western lifestyle are associated with a poorer prognosis in women with breast cancer. The primary aim of this analysis was to examine the effect of a telephone-delivered lifestyle intervention program on reducing body weight and waist circumference, decreasing cardiovascular risk factors and improving lifestyle. DESIGN: Data is derived from an open-label, randomized, controlled phase III study that evaluated two chemotherapy regimens and the impact of a 2-year lifestyle intervention on disease-free survival and secondary outcomes in women with intermediate-risk to high-risk breast cancer. Initially, 2292 women with a body mass index (BMI) between 24 and 40 kg/m2 were randomized into one of two arms of the lifestyle intervention study. After accounting for dropout, 1785 participants remained: 776 in the intervention group (IG) who received a telephone-delivered lifestyle intervention supported by mailed materials, and 1009 in the low-level intervention group (LLIG) who received only mailed educational materials with general recommendations for a healthy lifestyle. Body weight, waist circumference, dietary intake, physical activity, and cardiovascular disease risk parameters were measured repeatedly throughout the intervention and a subsequent 2-year follow-up period. Linear mixed models for repeated measures were used to assess differences in study outcomes between the LLIG and IG at each measured time point. RESULTS: IG participants showed a mean weight loss of -2.7 kg (kg) (versus +0.4 kg, LLIG) at 6 months, -2.8 kg (vs. +0.8 kg, LLIG) at 12 months and -1.8 kg at 24 months (versus +0.9 kg, LLIG). Significant between-group differences for weight loss and reduced waist circumference were observed at all time points until the end of the lifestyle intervention (all p-values < 0.0001), including post-intervention. Reduced energy intake and a higher alternate healthy eating index (AHEI) score in the IG was detected during the lifestyle intervention (AHEI at 24 months: IG 49.1% versus LLIG 42.0%, p < 0.001). Modest significant improvements in several cardiovascular risk factors were observed during the intervention, including fasting plasma glucose, HbA1c, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and lipids. CONCLUSIONS: A mainly telephone-delivered lifestyle intervention program can reduce body weight and waist circumference, improve diet quality, and decrease cardiometabolic risk in women with overweight/obesity and newly diagnosed, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)/neu-negative, intermediate-risk to high-risk breast cancer. Weight loss, reduced waist circumference and improved dietary patterns were maintained for up to two years post-intervention. Progress in the field of ecological stoichiometry has demonstrated that the outcome of ecological interactions can often be predicted a priori based on the nutrient ratios (e.g., carbon: nitrogen: phosphorus, C:N:P) of interacting organisms. However, the challenges of accurately measuring the nutrient content of active parasites within hosts has limited our ability to rigorously apply ecological stoichiometry to host-parasite systems. Traditional nutrient analyses require high parasite biomasses, often preventing individual-level analyses. This prevents researchers from estimating variation in the nutrient content of individual parasites within a single host infrapopulation, a critical factor that could define how the ecology of the parasite affects the host-parasite interaction. Here, we explain how energy dispersive technology, a technique currently used to measure the elemental content of free-living microbes, can be adapted for parasitic microbial infrapopulations. We demonstrate the power of accurately quantifying the biomass stoichiometry of individual microbial parasites sampled directly from individual hosts. Using this approach, we show that the stoichiometric composition of two microbial parasites capable of infecting the same host are stoichiometrically distinct and respond to host diet quality differently. We also demonstrate that characteristics of the stoichiometric trait distributions of these infrapopulations were important predictors of host fecundity, a proxy for virulence in this system, and better predictors of parasite load than the mean parasite stoichiometry or our parasite and diet treatments alone. EDS provides a rigorous tool for applying ecological stoichiometry to host-parasite systems and enables researchers to explore the nutritional physiology of host-parasite interactions at a scale that is more relevant to the ecology and evolution of the system than traditional nutrient analyses. Here we demonstrate that this level of resolution provides useful insights into the diet-dependent physiology of microbial parasites and their hosts. We anticipate that this improved level of resolution has the potential to elucidate a range of eco-evo interactions in host-parasite systems that were previously unobservable.

Background and aim: Nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining and improving vision health. However, little is known about dietary intake habits and their correlation with vision health among adults in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). The present survey was aimed to assess dietary patterns and vision health among Saudi adults and to determine the association between dietary patterns and vision health. Methods: The present analytical study was carried out among 1,234 Saudi adults in the Makkah, Riyadh, and Qassim regions of KSA. We used the Arabic version of the National Eye Institute Visual Functioning Questionnaire-25 (NEI VFQ-25) and the diet quality screener (DQS). We applied Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests to determine the association between vision function score and demographic characteristics. Furthermore, the Spearman correlation test was used to determine the relationship between the DQS and the NEI VFQ-25. Results: Of the studied population, the highest score obtained through the NEI VFQ-25 was in the social function domain (mean ± SD = 76.64 ± 18.63), followed by the general vision domain (mean ± SD = 75.21 ± 15.16) and was negatively correlated with age. Regarding dietary patterns, the intake of lean protein sources per week was the highest, with a mean intake of 4.17 days per week, followed by that of whole grains and milk or dairy products, with a mean intake of around four days per week. There was a significant correlation between various dietary intakes and visual function scores. Conclusion: The present survey underscores the significance of understanding regional dietary patterns and their implications for vision health. Furthermore, our study's findings indicate a need for targeted nutritional intervention measures to improve the vision health of this population.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear if improving diet quality after midlife could reduce the risk of physical frailty at late life. We aimed to associate changes in diet quality after midlife with physical frailty at late life. METHODS: Diet quality in 12,580 participants from the Singapore Chinese Health Study was assessed with the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) scores at baseline (1993-1998; mean age 53 years) and follow-up 3 (2014-2016; mean age 73 years). Physical frailty was assessed using the modified Cardiovascular Health Study phenotype at follow-up 3. Multivariable logistic regressions examined associations between DASH scores and physical frailty. RESULTS: Comparing participants in extreme quartiles of DASH scores, the odds ratios (OR) [95% confidence interval (CI)] for physical frailty were 0.85 (0.73,0.99) at baseline and 0.49 (0.41, 0.58) at follow-up 3. Compared to participants with consistently low DASH scores, participants with consistently high scores (OR 0.74, 95% CI: 0.59, 0.94) and those with > 10% increase in scores (OR 0.78, 95% CI: 0.64, 0.95) had lower odds of frailty. Compared to those in the lowest DASH tertiles at both time-points, significantly lower odds of physical frailty were observed in those who were in the highest DASH tertiles at both time points [0.59 (0.48, 0.73)], and in those who improved their scores from the lowest [0.68 (0.51, 0.91)] or second tertile at baseline [0.61 (0.48, 0.76)] to the highest tertile at follow-up 3. CONCLUSIONS: Maintaining a high diet quality or a substantial improvement in diet quality after midlife could lower the risk of physical frailty at late life.

In the context of rural Bangladesh, we assess whether agriculture training alone, nutrition Behavior Communication Change (BCC) alone, combined agriculture training and nutrition BCC, or agriculture training and nutrition BCC combined with gender sensitization improve: (a) production diversity, either on household fields or through crop, livestock or aquaculture activities carried out near the family homestead and (b) diet diversity and the quality of household diets. All treatment arms were implemented by government employees. Implementation quality was high. No treatment increased production diversification of crops grown on fields. Treatment arms with agricultural training did increase the number of different crops grown in homestead gardens and the likelihood of any egg, dairy, or fish production but the magnitudes of these effect sizes were small. All agricultural treatment arms had, in percentage terms, large effects on measures of levels of homestead production. However, because baseline levels of production were low, the magnitude of these changes in absolute terms was modest. Nearly all treatment arms improved measures of food consumption and diet with the largest effects found when nutrition and agriculture training were combined. Relative to treatments combining agriculture and nutrition training, we find no significant impact of adding the gender sensitization on our measures of production diversity or diet quality. Interventions that combine agricultural training and nutrition BCC can improve both production diversity and diet quality, but they are not a panacea. They can, however, contribute towards better diets of rural households.

Association analyses between longitudinal changes in diet quality scores (DQIs) and cardiometabolic risk remain scarce. Hence, we aimed to investigate how changes in two DQIs are associated with incident type 2 diabetes (T2D), myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke in the EPIC-Potsdam study. Changes in the Mediterranean Pyramid Score (MedPyr) and Healthy Diet Score (HDS) over 7 years from baseline (1994-1998) to follow-up 3 (2001-2005) were investigated in 23,548 middle-aged participants. Adjusted Cox Proportional Hazards Regression models were applied to investigate associations between changes in MedPyr and HDS and chronic disease incidence. More than 60% of the participants increased both DQIs more than 5%. Within a median follow-up time of 5 years 568 cases of T2D, 171 of MI, 189 of stroke were verified. An increased compared to stable MedPyr was associated with lower T2D risk (HR 0.74; 95% CI 0.59-0.92), while a decreased MedPyr was associated with higher stroke risk (HR 1.67; 95% CI 1.02-2.72). A decreased compared to stable HDS was associated with higher stroke risk (HR 1.80; 95% CI 1.02-3.20). The findings contribute further evidence on advantages of changing dietary intake towards a Mediterranean Diet. Although baseline HDS adherence was associated with T2D and stroke risk, longitudinal changes in HDS were only significantly associated with stroke risk.

Understanding the relationship between the intake of sugars and diet quality can inform public health recommendations. This systematic review synthesized recent literature on associations between sugar intake and diet quality in generally healthy populations aged 2 years or older. We searched databases from 2010 to 2022 for studies of any design examining associations between quantified sugar intake in the daily diet and dietary indexes (DIs) or micronutrient intakes. Different sugar types and diet quality measures were analyzed separately. We converted DI results to Pearson's r correlations and grouped indexes with or without a free or added sugar component to facilitate cross-study comparisons. Meta-analysis was deemed inappropriate. From 13,869 screened records, we included 27 cross-sectional studies. NUQUEST risk of bias ratings were neutral (n = 18 studies) or poor (n = 9), and strength of evidence by the GRADE approach was very low due to study design. Most studies reported negative associations for added and free sugars with diet quality indexes (r ranging from -0.13 to -0.42) and nutrients of public health concern (fiber, vitamin D, calcium, potassium), while associations with total sugars were mixed. Due to cross-sectional study designs, the clinical relevance of these findings is unclear. Prospective studies are needed to minimize confounding and inform causal relationships.

PURPOSE: A healthy diet reduces the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in the general population, especially in individuals who are genetically predisposed to NAFLD. Little is known in patients who suffered from a myocardial infarction (MI). We examined the interaction between diet quality and genetic predisposition in relation to NAFLD in post-MI patients. METHODS: We included 3437 post-MI patients from the Alpha Omega Cohort. Diet quality was assessed with adherence to the Dutch Healthy Diet index 2015 (DHD15-index). A weighted genetic risk score (GRS) for NAFLD was computed using 39 genetic variants. NAFLD prevalence was predicted using the Fatty Liver Index. Prevalence ratios (PR) with 95% confidence intervals of DHD15-index and GRS in relation to NAFLD were obtained with multivariable Cox proportional hazards models. The interaction between DHD15-index and GRS in relation to NAFLD was assessed on an additive and multiplicative scale. RESULTS: Patients had a mean age of 69 (± 5.5) years, 77% was male and 20% had diabetes. The DHD15-index ranged from 28 to 120 with a mean of 73. Patients with higher diet quality were less likely to suffer from NAFLD, with a PR of 0.76 (0.62, 0.92) for the upper vs lower quintile of DHD15-index. No association between the GRS and NAFLD prevalence was found (PR of 0.92 [0.76, 1.11]). No statistically significant interaction between the DHD15-index and GRS was observed. CONCLUSION: In Dutch post-MI patients, adherence to the Dutch dietary guidelines was associated with a lower prevalence of NAFLD, as assessed by the FLI. This association was present regardless of genetic predisposition in this older aged cohort.
