RESUMO

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a refractory cancer that arises from hematopoietic stem cells and predominantly affects elderly adults. In addition to driver gene mutations, which are also found in clonal hematopoiesis in healthy elderly people, systemic inflammation caused by infection or collagen disease has long been known as an extracellular factor in the pathogenesis of MDS. Wild-type HSCs have an "innate immune memory" that functions in response to infection and inflammatory stress, and my colleagues and I used an infection stress model to demonstrate that the innate immune response by the TLR-TRIF-PLK-ELF1 pathway is similarly critical in impairment of hematopoiesis and dysregulation of chromatin in MDS stem cells. This revealed that not only are MDS stem cells expanded by the TRAF6-NF-kB pathway, the innate immune response is also involved in generating MDS stem cells. In this review, I will present research findings related to "innate immune memory," one of the pathogenic mechanisms of blood cancer, and discuss future directions for basic pathological research and potential therapeutic development.

PURPOSE: The incidence of pneumonia caused by multidrug-resistant gram-negative bacteria (MDR GNB) is increasing, which imposes significant burden on public health. Inhalation combined with intravenous polymyxins has emerged as a viable treatment option. However, pharmacokinetic studies focusing on intravenous and inhaled polymyxin B (PMB) are limited. METHODS: This study included seven patients with MDR GNB-induced pneumonia who were treated with intravenous plus inhaled PMB from March 1 to November 30, 2022, in the intensive care unit of the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine. Clinical outcomes and therapeutic drug monitoring data of PMB in both plasma and epithelial lining fluid (ELF) were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: Median PMB concentrations in the ELF were 7.83 (0.72-66.5), 116.72 (17.37-571.26), 41.1 (3.69-133.78), and 33.82 (0.83-126.68) mg/L at 0, 2, 6, and 12 h, respectively, and were much higher than those detected in the serum. ELF concentrations of PMB at 0, 2, 6, and 12 h were higher than the minimum inhibitory concentrations of pathogens isolated from the patients. Steady-state concentrations of PMB in the plasma were > 2 mg/L in most patients. Of the patients, 57.14 % were cured and 71.43 % showed a favorable microbiological response. The incidence of side effects with PMB was low. CONCLUSIONS: Inhaled plus intravenous PMB can achieve high ELF concentrations and favorable clinical outcomes without an increased adverse effect profile. This treatment approach appears promising for the treatment of patients with pneumonia caused by MDR-GNB.

Within the context of Molecular Electronic Density Theory (MEDT), this study investigates the Diels-Alder reaction among isoprene (2) and R-carvone (1R) applying DFT simulations, with and without Lewis acid (LA) catalysis. The results show that carvone (1R) acts as an electrophile and isoprene (2) as a nucleophile in a polar process. LA catalysis increases the electrophilicity of carvone, thereby improving the reactivity and selectivity of the reaction by reducing the activation Gibbs free energy. Parr functions reveal that the C5=C6 double bond is more reactive than the C9=C10 double bond, indicating chemoselectivity. The examination of the Electron Localization Function (ELF) reveals high regio- and stereoselectivity, indicating an asynchronous mechanism for the LA-catalyzed DA reaction. Furthermore, it is suggested that cycloadduct 3 has great anti-HIV potential because it exhibits lower binding energies than azidothymidine (AZT) in the docking studies of cycloadducts 3 and 4 amongst a primary HIV-1protein (1A8O plus 5W4Q).

The patient 1, a 13-year-old boy, was admitted due to "recurrent oral ulcers for 3 years, abdominal pain for 8 months, and perianal ulcers for 10 days"; The patient 2, a 3-year-old boy, was admitted due to "recurrent abdominal pain, diarrhea, and fever for over 3 months". Genetic testing of both patients revealed "deficiency in ELF4, X-linked" (DEX), and the patients were diagnosed with Behcet's disease-like syndrome due to deficiency in ELF4, accordingly. The patient 1 was successively given intravenous methylprednisolone pulses and oral prednisone and mesalazine for symptomatic treatment. The patient 2 was successively treated with corticosteroids combined with enteral nutrition, as well as oral mercaptopurine. Subsequently, both patients showed improvements in symptoms and were discharged.

Background and aims: The enhanced liver fibrosis (ELF) score is a blood test that combines three markers linked to liver fibrosis. The utility of the ELF score has been demonstrated primarily in Western countries, but whether it is useful in areas with a high number of elderly people suffering from chronic liver disease has yet to be determined. Methods: This is a prospective study that included 373 consecutive patients who underwent a liver biopsy and had their ELF score measured on the same day. The diagnostic accuracy of the ELF score for liver fibrosis and the effect of age on the ELF score were investigated. Results: The median (interquartile) ELF scores in F0, F1, F2, F3, and F4 are 8.7 (8.2-9.2), 9.3 (8.8-10.0), 10.1 (9.4-10.7), 10.7 (9.9-11.2), and 12.0 (11.2-12.7), respectively. ELF scores increased with increasing liver fibrosis stage (p < 0.001). The diagnostic accuracy of the ELF score and FIB-4 for significant fibrosis (F2-4) and advanced fibrosis (F3-4) was comparable, but the ELF score had a higher diagnostic accuracy for cirrhosis (F4) than FIB-4. When patients were stratified by age of 60 years, the median ELF score did not differ by age in F2, F3, and F4. However, the median FIB-4 increased in patients with ≥60 years compared to those with <60 years in all fibrosis stages. Conclusions: ELF score has high diagnostic accuracy for liver fibrosis, regardless of age, and it could be used as a primary screening method.

We previously established a thermodynamical model to calculate the specific frequencies of extremely low frequency-electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF) able to arrest the growth of cancer cells. In the present study, for the first time, we investigated the efficacy of this technology on osteosarcoma, and we applied a precise frequency of the electromagnetic field on three human osteosarcoma cell lines, grown as adherent cells and spheroids. We evaluated the antitumour efficacy of irradiation in terms of response to chemotherapeutic treatments, which is usually poor in this type of cancer. Importantly, the results of this novel combinatorial approach revealed that the specific exposure can potentiate the efficacy of several chemotherapeutic drugs, both on bidimensional and tridimensional cancer models. The effectiveness of cisplatinum, methotrexate, ifosfamide and doxorubicin was greatly increased by the concomitant application of the specific ELF-EMF. Moreover, our experiments confirmed that ELF-EMF inhibited the proliferation and modulated the mitochondrial metabolism of all cancer models tested, whereas mesenchymal cells were not affected. The latter finding is extremely valuable, given the importance of preserving the cell reservoir necessary for tissue regeneration after chemotherapy. Altogether, this novel evidence opens new avenues to the clinical applications of ELF-EMF in oncology.

The molecule of 2-Biphenyl Carboxylic Acid (2BCA), which contains peculiar features, was explored making use of density functional theory (DFT) and experimental approaches in the area of quantum computational research. The optimised structure, atomic charges, vibrational frequencies, electrical properties, electrostatic potential surface (ESP), natural bond orbital analysis and potential energy surface (PES) were obtained applying the B3LYP approach with the 6-311++ G (d,p) basis set.. The 2BCA molecule was examined for possible conformers using a PES scan. The methods applied for spectral analyses included FT-IR, FT-RAMAN, NMR, and UV-Vis results. Vibrational frequencies for all typical modes of vibration were found using the Potential Energy Distribution (PED) data. The UV-Vis spectrum was simulated using the TD-DFT technique, which is also seen empirically. The Gauge-Invariant Atomic Orbital (GIAO) approach was employed to model and study the 13C and 1H NMR spectra of the 2BCA molecule in a CDCL3 solution. The spectra were then exploited experimentally to establish their chemical shifts. To predict the donor and acceptor interaction, the NBO analysis was used. The electrostatic potential surface was employed to anticipate the locations of nucleophilic and electrophilic sites. Hirshfeld surfaces and their related fingerprint plots are exploited for the investigation of intermolecular interactions. Reduced Density Gradient (RDG) helps to measure and illustrate electron correlation effects, offering precise insights into chemical bonding, reactivity, and the electronic structure of 2BCA. According to Lipinski and Veber's drug similarity criteria, 2BCA exhibits the typical physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties that make it a potential oral pharmaceutical candidate. According to the findings of a molecular docking study, the 2BCA molecule has promise as a treatment agent for the Nipah virus (PDB ID: 6 EB9), which causes severe respiratory and neurological symptoms in humans.

Myocardial infarction (MI) seriously threatens the health of elderly people, and reducing myocardial injury is of great significance for the treatment of MI. LncRNA-TTN-AS1 shows protective effects on cardiomyocyte injury, while the role of TTN-AS1 in MI remains unknown. CCK8, flow cytometry, and JC-1 staining assessed cell viability, apoptosis and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), respectively. Cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and secreted lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were measured. The interactions between ELF5, TTN-AS1, PCBP2 and CDK6 were explored using ChIP, luciferase reporter assay, RIP, and pull-down. The severity of MI in mice was evaluated using TTC, H&E, and TUNEL staining. The data revealed that OGD/R significantly induced ROS, mitochondrial injury and apoptosis in AC16 cells, while overexpression of ELF5 or TTN-AS1 reversed these phenomena. ELF5 transcriptionally activated TTN-AS1 through binding with its promoter. TTN-AS1 increased CDK6 stability via recruiting PCBP2. CDK6 knockdown abolished the inhibitory effects of TTN-AS1 overexpression on OGD/R-induced myocardial injury. Furthermore, overexpression of TTN-AS1 or ELF5 alleviated MI progression in mice by upregulating CDK6. Collectively, TTN-AS1 transcriptionally regulated by ELF5 alleviated myocardial apoptosis and injury during MI via recruiting PCBP2 to increase CDK6 stability, which shed new lights on exploring new strategies against MI.

Interferon epsilon (IFNε) is a unique type I interferon (IFN) that shows distinct constitutive expression in reproductive tract epithelium. Understanding how IFNε expression is regulated is critical for the mechanism of action in protecting the mucosa from infection. Combined computational and experimental investigation of the promoter of IFNε predicted transcription factor binding sites for the ETS family of transcription factors. We demonstrate here that Ifnε is regulated by Elf3, an epithelial restricted member of the ETS family. It is co-expressed with IFNε at the epithelium of uterus, lung and intestine, and we focused on regulation of IFNε expression in the uterus. Promoter reporter studies demonstrated that Elf3 was a strong driver of Ifnε expression; knockdown of Elf3 reduced expression levels of IFNε; Elf3 regulated Ifnε expression and chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) confirmed the direct binding of Elf3 to the IFNε promoter. These data show that Elf3 is important in regulating protective mucosal immunity by driving constitutive expression of IFNε to protect mucosal tissues from infection in at least three organ systems.

Objectives: Prenatal stress (PS) can adversely affect cognitive and psychological functions in the offspring. This study aimed to determine the effect of PS and extremely low-frequency electromagnetic field (ELF-EMF) on spatial memory, serum corticosterone, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) concentrations, and hippocampal BDNF levels in adult male offspring. Materials and Methods: Female Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups (n=6): Control, Stress, ELF-EMF (exposure to ELF-EMF), and S+EMF (simultaneous exposure to stress and the ELF-EMF) groups. Animals received interven-tions for 21 days before and 21 days during pregnancy (a total of 42 days). On the offspring's 90th postnatal day (PND), spatial memory was tested using Morris Water Maze, serum Corticosterone and BDNF levels were measured by the ELISA method, and hippocampal BDNF levels were measured by Western blotting. Results: PS did not affect spatial memory in the adult male offspring; however, it significantly (P<0.05) increased se-rum corticosterone levels compared to the control and EMF groups. Simultaneous induction of stress with ELF-EMF disrupted the memory acquisition phase. Serum and hippocampal BDNF levels increased signifi-cantly (P<0.05) in the EMF group compared to the stress group. Conclusion: Based on our findings, PS can increase serum corticosterone levels without affecting spatial memory. Howev-er, induction of ELF-EMF with stress has a destructive effect on spatial memory with no change in the corti-costerone levels. Compared to stress, prenatal exposure to ELF-EMF increases serum and hippocampal BDNF levels. Further studies are needed to determine the underlying mechanisms of these findings.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common chronic disease with age-associated increase in both incidence and prevalence. The cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5), which is a member of the CDK family, is involved in many chronic diseases. This study was performed to explore the functional role of CDK5 in OA and to discuss the detailed molecular mechanisms. The expressions of CDK5 and ELF3 before or after transfection were detected with reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) and western blot. 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (Edu) and terminal deoxynucleoitidyl transferase-mediated nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assays were used to detect the proliferation and apoptosis of C28/I2 cells. The levels of inflammatory cytokines were estimated using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) while the expressions of proteins implicated in extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation- and apoptosis were detected using western blot. Additionally, the activity of CDK5 promoters and its binding with ELF3 were detected using luciferase activity assay and chromatin immunoprecipitation (CHIP) assay. In the present study, it was discovered that the mRNA and protein expressions of CDK5 were significantly increased in IL-1ß-induced C28/I2 cells. After depleting CDK5 expression, the apoptosis, inflammation and ECM in C28/I2 cells with IL-1ß induction were suppressed. It was also found that ELF3 expression was increased in IL-1ß-induced C28/I2 cells and acted as a transcription factor binding to the CDK5 promoter to regulate its transcriptional expression. The further experiments evidenced that ELF3 overexpression partially reversed the inhibitory effects of CDK5 deficiency on IL-1ß-induced apoptosis, inflammation and ECM in C28/I2 cells. Collectively, CDK5 that upregulated by ELF3 transcription could promote the development of OA.

The distinct human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I expression pattern of human extravillous trophoblasts (EVT) endows them with unique tolerogenic properties that enable successful pregnancy. Nevertheless, how this process is elaborately regulated remains elusive. Previously, E74 like ETS transcription factor 3 (ELF3) was identified to govern high-level HLA-C expression in EVT. In the present study, ELF3 is found to bind to the enhancer region of two adjacent NOD-like receptor (NLR) genes, NLR family pyrin domain-containing 2 and 7 (NLRP2, NLRP7). Notably, our analysis of ELF3-deficient JEG-3 cells, a human choriocarcinoma cell line widely used to study EVT biology, suggests that ELF3 transactivates NLRP7 while suppressing the expression of NLRP2. Moreover, we find that NLRP2 and NLRP7 have opposing effects on HLA-C expression, thus implicating them in immune evasion at the maternal-fetal interface. We confirmed that NLRP2 suppresses HLA-C levels and described a unique role for NLRP7 in promoting HLA-C expression in JEG-3. These results suggest that these two NLR genes, which arose via gene duplication in primates, are fine-tuned by ELF3 yet have acquired divergent functions to enable proper expression levels of HLA-C in EVT, presumably through modulating the degradation kinetics of IkBα. Targeting the ELF3-NLRP2/NLRP7-HLA-C axis may hold therapeutic potential for managing pregnancy-related disorders, such as recurrent hydatidiform moles and fetal growth restriction, and thus improve placental development and pregnancy outcomes.

CONTEXT: This research aims to offer a deeper understanding of the bonding interactions between M-Se and M-CO and how these interactions change across the group 6 transition metal series: [Se2M3(CO)10]2- (M = Cr, Mo, W). It also seeks to explore the impact of carbonyl groups on M-M interactions within the clusters. Seven criteria, which are based on QTAIM properties, have been considered and compared with the corresponding criteria in other transition metal clusters. The results confirm that no such bond critical points or bond baths occur between transition metals, which instead have 5c-7e bonding interactions delocalized over their five-membered M3(µ-Se)2 ring, as evidenced by the non-negligible nonbonding delocalization indices. The topological properties of three bond clusters, Cr-Se, Mo-Se, and W-Se, resemble those of "intermediate closed shell characters," which combine covalent and electrostatic properties. Source function calculations indicated that the bonded Se atom contributed the most to each Cr-Se and Mo-Se bcp. The OCO atoms and nonbonded Se atoms also contributed to some extent. However, metal atoms act as sinks rather than as sources of electron density. In contrast, the majority of the metal atoms, both bonded and nonbonded, contribute to Cr-W bcps. Analysis of the delocalization indices δ(M…O) in the three clusters indicates that CO significantly contributes to Cr π-back donation in cluster 1. In contrast, no π-back donation occurs from CO to Mo or W in clusters 2 or 3, respectively. METHODS: The B3P86 hybrid functional was used for computations in the Gaussian 09 software. The LanL2DZ basis set was employed for Cr, Mo, and W, while the 6-31G (d, p) basis set was used for C, O, and Se atoms. We performed QTAIM analysis using the AIM2000 and Multiwfn packages, incorporating B3P86/WTBS for Cr, Mo, and W atoms. The 6-311++G(3df,3pd) basis set was used for C, O, and Se atoms. Additionally, we utilized the ELF and SF.

Extremely low-frequency (ELF) electromagnetic (EM) waves adeptly propagate in harsh cross-medium environments, overcoming rapid decay that hinders high-frequency counterparts. Traditional antennas, however, encounter challenges concerning size, efficiency, and power. Here, drawing inspiration from nature, we present a groundbreaking piezo-actuated, bionic flapping-wing magnetic-dipole resonator (BFW-MDR), operating in the electro-mechano-magnetic coupling mechanism, designed for efficient ELF EM wave transmission. The unique rigid-flexible hybrid flapping-wing structure magnifies rotation angles of anti-phase magnetic dipoles by tenfold, leading to constructive superposition of emitted magnetic fields. Consequently, the BFW-MDR exhibits a remarkable quality factor of 288 and an enhanced magnetic field emission of 514 fT at 100 meters with only 6.9 mW power consumption, surpassing traditional coil antennas by three orders of magnitude. The communication rate is doubled by the ASK+PSK modulation method. Its robust performance in cross-medium communication, even amidst various interferences, underscores its potential as a highly efficient antenna for underwater and underground applications.

Developing early maturing lentil has the potential to minimize yield losses, mainly during terminal drought. Whole-genome resequencing (WGRS) based QTL-seq identified the loci governing earliness in lentil. The genetic analysis for maturity duration provided a good fit to 3:1 segregation (F2), indicating earliness as a recessive trait. WGRS of Globe Mutant (late parent), late-flowering, and early-flowering bulks (from RILs) has generated 1124.57, 1052.24 million raw and clean reads, respectively. The QTL-Seq identified three QTLs (LcqDTF3.1, LcqDTF3.2, and LcqDTF3.3) on chromosome 3 having 246244 SNPs and 15577 insertions/deletions (InDels) and 13 flowering pathway genes. Of these, 11 exhibited sequence variations between bulks and validation (qPCR) revealed a significant difference in the expression of nine candidate genes (LcGA20oxG, LcFRI, LcLFY, LcSPL13a, Lcu.2RBY.3g060720, Lcu.2RBY.3g062540, Lcu.2RBY.3g062760, LcELF3a, and LcEMF1). Interestingly, the LcELF3a gene showed significantly higher expression in late-flowering genotype and exhibited substantial involvement in promoting lateness. Subsequently, an InDel marker (I-SP-383.9; LcELF3a gene) developed from LcqDTF3.2 QTL region showed 82.35% PVE (phenotypic variation explained) for earliness. The cloning, sequencing, and comparative analysis of the LcELF3a gene from both parents revealed 23 SNPs and InDels. Interestingly, a 52 bp deletion was recorded in the LcELF3a gene of L4775, predicted to cause premature termination of protein synthesis after 4 missense amino acids beyond the 351st amino acid due to the frameshift during translation. The identified InDel marker holds significant potential for breeding early maturing lentil varieties.

(1) Background: This study investigated the effects of sequenced electromagnetic fields, modulated at extremely low frequencies and intensities, in the treatment of drug-resistant Escherichia coli (E. coli)-induced chronic bacterial cystitis. (2) Methods: A total of 148 female participants, aged 18 to 80 years diagnosed with chronic bacterial cystitis caused by drug-resistant E. coli, were recruited for this study. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups: an experimental group (n = 74) with osteopathic palpation and assessment treated with a sequence of electromagnetic fields, and a control group (n = 74) receiving a placebo treatment. Both groups were assessed at this study's outset, 4 weeks after eight applications, and at 12 weeks for symptomatic presentation and laboratory parameters. (3) Results: After 4 weeks of treatment, a significant difference was observed between the two groups regarding D-DIMER levels, IL-6 levels, erythrocyte levels, leukocyte levels, and E. coli levels (p < 0.001). By the 12th week, the experimental group continued to exhibit a significant reduction in the examined parameters compared to the control group (p < 0.001). Additionally, the treatment did not induce any side effects in the patients in the experimental group. (4) Conclusions: Treatment with coherently sequenced electromagnetic fields, modulated at an extremely low frequency and intensity, not only appears to provide an effective alternative for the symptoms of chronic bacterial cystitis caused by drug-resistant E. coli but also demonstrates a potent antibacterial effect.

This article explores the possible presence of a pentacle valence bond structure in C 5 ${_5 }$ cyclic molecules. At this end, we have used quantum chemistry tools to elucidate the possible arrangement and the nature of chemical bonds within linear, cyclic, and three-dimensional structures only formed by five carbon atoms. While the linear structure is clearly the most stable one, local minima were obtained for both bi- and three-dimensional structures. Using the localization-delocalization matrices approach, we characterize both the minimum linear structure and the cyclic ones. Interestingly, the linear structure is a combination of ionic and covalent bonds, albeit the four distances are almost identical, when using Density Functional Theory. For cyclic C 5 ${_5 }$ , the pentacle bonding arrangement emerges as a significant Lewis structure, indicative of an unusual formal configuration characterized by five intersecting C-C bonds. Our calculations show that this pentacle arrangement in cyclic C 5 ${_5 }$ scheme is also present in the more known cyclo-pentadienyl molecule.

BACKGROUND: TRAIL protein on binding to its cognate death receptors (DR) can induce apoptosis specifically in breast tumor cells sparing normal cells. However, TRAIL also binds to decoy receptors (DCR) thereby inhibiting the apoptotic pathways thus causing TRAIL resistance. Also, one of the barriers due to which TRAIL-based therapy could not become FDA-approved might be because of resistance to therapy. Therefore, in the current study we wanted to explore the role of transcription factors in TRAIL resistance with respect to breast cancer. METHODS: Microarray data from TRAIL-sensitive (TS) and TRAIL-resistant (TR) MDA-MB-231 cells were reanalyzed followed by validation of the candidate genes using quantitative PCR (qPCR), immunoblotting and immunofluorescence technique. Overexpression of the candidate gene was performed in MDA-MB-231 and MCF7 cells followed by cell viability assay and immunoblotting for cleaved caspase-3. Additionally, immunoblotting for DCR2 was carried out. TCGA breast cancer patient survival was used for Kaplan-Meier (KM) plot. RESULTS: Validation of the candidate gene i.e. ELF3 using qPCR and immunoblotting revealed it to be downregulated in TR cells compared to TS cells. ELF3 overexpression in MDA-MB-231 and MCF7 cells caused reversal of TRAIL resistance as observed using cell viability assay and cleaved caspase-3 immunoblotting. ELF3 overexpression also resulted in DCR2 downregulation in the MDA-MB-231 and MCF7 cells. Furthermore, KM analysis found high ELF3 and low DCR2 expression to show better patient survival in the presence of TRAIL. CONCLUSION: Our study shows ELF3 to be an important factor that can influence TRAIL-mediated apoptosis in breast cancer. Also, ELF3 and DCR2 expression status should be taken into consideration while designing strategies for successful TRAIL-based therapy.

Since the establishment of regulations for exposure to extremely low-frequency (0-300) Hz electromagnetic fields, scientific opinion has prioritised the hypothesis that the most important parameter determining cellular behaviour has been intensity, ignoring the other exposure parameters (frequency, time, mode, waveform). This has been reflected in the methodologies of the in vitro articles published and the reviews in which they are included. A scope review was carried out, grouping a total of 79 articles that met the proposed inclusion criteria and studying the effects of the different experiments on viability, proliferation, apoptosis, oxidative stress and the cell cycle. These results have been divided and classified by frequency, intensity, exposure time and exposure mode (continuous/intermittent). The results obtained for each of the processes according to the exposure parameter used are shown graphically to highlight the importance of a good methodology in experimental development and the search for mechanisms of action that explain the experimental results, considering not only the criterion of intensity. The consequence of this is a more than necessary revision of current exposure protection regulations for the general population based on the reductionist criterion of intensity.
