The oral microbiome is a diverse and complex ecosystem essential for maintaining oral and systemic health. Our study is the first to define the oral microbial community in Egyptian young adults and investigate the effects of natural antimicrobials on the oral microbiome. SuperMint (SM) is a proprietary blend of peppermint, Japanese mint, bergamot mint, and spearmint essential oils encapsulated in a tiny soft beadlet. This work aimed to evaluate the effects of SM beadlets on the oral microbiome. This study recruited twenty healthy participants. A baseline investigation of the oral microbiome of the selected participants was performed by collecting saliva and swab samples before treatment. Treatment included chewing four SM beadlets twice a day for 7 days, and then, post-administration saliva and swab samples were collected at the end of treatment. The oral microbiome samples were analyzed by the high-throughput amplicon sequencing of 16S rRNA gene fragments, and the community composition was determined. The results showed that the abundance of some microbial genera and families decreased after using SM, including Prevotella, Streptococcus, Neisseria, and Haemophilus. However, some genera showed inconsistent patterns. We also found that the subject's gender and SM usage were significantly associated with diverse microbial composition. The results suggest that SM treatment decreased the abundance of several bacteria associated with halitosis and periodontal diseases, such as Actinomyces and Streptococcus. Furthermore, Corynebacterium species increased and Streptococcus decreased after SM usage. More research is needed to fully understand the antimicrobial effects of mint oils and their potential applications in maintaining good oral health.

This review article mainly delves into the comprehensive development, thermal stabilization, characteristics, and applications of Blue Phase III (BPIII) derived from non-calamitic, mainly T-shaped and bent-core liquid crystals (BCLC). The discussion begins with discovering and characterizing various liquid crystal (LC) phases of BCLCs, emphasizing the significance of the nematic (N) phase in three and four-ring BCLCs. Following this, the focus shifts to the stabilization, properties, and potential applications of BPIII, particularly those derived from non-conventional liquid crystals. The review highlights the exceptional electro-optical (E-O) properties of BPIII, including high Kerr constants and distinct phase transitions. Studies reveal the impact of chirality on thermal behavior, microscopic observations, and the influence of molecular structures on mesophase formation. Investigations into asymmetrical chiral liquid crystal diads and hydrogen-bonded complexes underscore the importance of molecular design in expanding BPIII ranges. Furthermore, achiral unsymmetrical BCLC designs reveal significant insights into the interplay between molecular structure, phase transitions, and E-O behavior. Additionally, the structural transformation and E-O properties of highly polar BCLCs are examined to stabilize BPIII at room temperature, achieving notable Kerr constants and low voltage requirements. These collective studies provide a thorough understanding of BPIII and its promising applications in materials science and technology.

In the present study, we assessed the antioxidant and antileishmanial potential from fresh leaves of Ballota (B.) hirsuta essential oil (EO). The GC-MS analysis of B. hirsuta EO revealed that spathulenol and germacrene D were the main components accounting for 26.03% and 19.64% of the total EO, respectively. B. hirsuta EO possesses moderate antioxidant activity, both in neutralizing DPPH radicals and in inhibiting ß-carotene bleaching. In addition, it exhibits both high antileishmanial activity and selectivity towards the promastigote and amastigote forms. Specifically, B. hirsuta EO showed an IC50 value of 20.78 µg/mL and 23.62 µg/mL, against the promastigote and amastigote forms of L. infantum, respectively. It also demonstrated an IC50 value of 22.39 and 25.76 µg/mL, against the promastigote and amastigote forms of L. major, respectively. However, it exhibited moderate cytotoxicity, with a selectivity index below 10. The investigation of the molecular mechanism of action revealed that B. hirsuta EO inhibited only the sterol pathway, including CYP51 gene expression. Additionally, in silico analysis indicated that the main compounds of B. hirsuta EO, germacrene and spathulenol, exhibited excellent affinity energy against Leishmania enzymes trypanothione reductase (TryR) and trypanothione synthase (TryS). This denotes the potential of these compounds as promising agents to control leishmaniasis.

This paper predicts the network security posture of an ICS, focusing on the reliability of Industrial Control Systems (ICSs). Evidence reasoning (ER) and belief rule base (BRB) techniques are employed to establish an ICS network security posture prediction model, ensuring the secure operation and prediction of the ICS. This model first integrates various information from the ICS to determine its network security posture value. Subsequently, through ER iteration, information fusion occurs and serves as an input for the BRB prediction model, which necessitates initial parameter setting by relevant experts. External factors may influence the experts' predictions; therefore, this paper proposes the Projection Equalization Optimization (P-EO) algorithm. This optimization algorithm updates the initial parameters to enhance the prediction of the ICS network security posture through the model. Finally, industrial datasets are used as experimental data to improve the credibility of the prediction experiments and validate the model's predictive performance in the ICS. Compared with other methods, this paper's prediction model demonstrates a superior prediction accuracy. By further comparing with other algorithms, this paper has a certain advantage when using less historical data to make predictions.

Polymer-stabilized liquid crystal (PSLC) is a promising material toward the practical application of serving as energy-saving reverse-mode smart windows owing to its superior electro-optical (E-O) properties, simple and efficient processability, and compatibility to most practical circumstances. However, its feeble peel strength originated from low polymer content and poor adhesion between polymer networks and substrates inhibited its large-scale flexible film production. It is still a challenging task to derive good mechanical properties and superior E-O performance for PSLCs at the same time. In this study, a highly durable liquid crystal/polymer composite film showing enhanced peel strength and excellent E-O properties was attained by simultaneously building photoreactive self-assemble alignment layers through an efficient one-step method and the sculpture of a patterned polymer wall structure. This film has comprehensive ascendant E-O properties of lower driving voltages, faster response times, and higher contrast ratio, together with an over 30 times lift of the peel strength. The effectuation mechanisms of the alignment, E-O properties, peel-strength, microstructures, and cyclic durability of the films have been systematically studied. This novel liquid crystal/polymer composite film demonstrates advantages in every aspect of performance compared to traditional PSLC devices, which hoards promising applications in smart windows for cars and buildings.

The sit-to-stand (STS) movement is fundamental in daily activities, involving coordinated motion of the lower extremities and trunk, which leads to the generation of joint moments based on joint angles and limb properties. Traditional methods for determining joint moments often involve sensors or complex mathematical approaches, posing limitations in terms of movement restrictions or expertise requirements. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have emerged as promising tools for joint moment estimation, but the challenge lies in efficiently selecting relevant features from diverse datasets, especially in clinical research settings. This study aims to address this challenge by leveraging metaheuristic optimization algorithms to predict joint moments during STS using minimal input data. Motion analysis data from 20 participants with varied mass and inertia properties are utilized, and joint angles are computed alongside simulations of joint moments. Feature selection is performed using the Manta Ray Foraging Optimization (MRFO), Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA), and Equilibrium Optimizer (EO) algorithms. Subsequently, Decision Tree Regression (DTR), Random Forest Regression (RFR), Extra Tree Regression (ETR), and eXtreme Gradient Boosting Regression (XGBoost Regression) ML algorithms are deployed for joint moment prediction. The results reveal EO-ETR as the most effective algorithm for ankle, knee, and neck joint moment prediction, while MPA-ETR exhibits superior performance for hip joint prediction. This approach demonstrates potential for enhancing accuracy in joint moment estimation with minimal feature input, offering implications for biomechanical research and clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: Endocrine orbitopathy (EO) is an autoimmune disease mostly associated with a disease of the thyroid gland, which leads to inflammation, adipogenesis and fibrosis. The severity of EO can vary greatly between individuals, which makes it difficult to exactly predict the natural course of the disease; however, this is important to be able to individually adapt the treatment. The aim of this study was to compare the clinical features, course, treatment and prognosis for patients with EO under 50 years old with older patients. The results of the study with a focus on motility are presented in this special issue. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The hospital records of a randomly selected sample of 1000 patients from the EO databank in Essen (GODE), which includes 4260 patients, were analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups: group 1 ≤50 years and group 2 >50 years. Only patients with complete data sets were included in the statistical analyses. RESULTS: Younger patients (n = 484) presented significantly more frequently with milder EO (53% vs. 33%, p < 0.0001), whereas older patients (n = 448) more frequently suffered from moderate or severe forms (44% vs. 64%, p < 0.0001). Older patients showed more severe strabismus, motility and clinical activity scores (5.9 vs. 2.3 prism diopters, PD/310° vs. 330°, both p < 0.0001, CAS 2.1 vs. 1.7, p = 0.001). Proptosis and the occurrence of optic nerve compression showed no significant differences between the groups (3% each). Multiple logistic regression showed that the necessity for a second eye muscle surgery was most strongly associated with a previous decompression (OR = 0.12, 95 % CI 0.1-0.2, p < 0.0001), followed by orbital irradiation and age. CONCLUSION: In summary, younger patients with EO presented with milder clinical features, such as a lower rate of restrictive motility disorders and weaker expression of signs of inflammation. Therefore, older patients needed steroids, irradiation, eyelid and eye muscle surgery more frequently; however, the risk of dysthyroid optic neuropathy and the necessity of a second eye surgery were not or only slightly associated with age.

The purpose of this study was to develop and validate a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model combined with an EGFR occupancy (EO) model for osimertinib (OSI) to predict plasma trough concentration (Ctrough) and the intracranial time-course of EGFR (T790M and L858R mutants) engagement in patient populations. The PBPK model was also used to investigate the key factors affecting OSI pharmacokinetics (PK) and intracranial EGFR engagement, analyze resistance to the target mutation C797S, and determine optimal dosing regimens when used alone and in drug-drug interactions (DDIs). A population PBPK-EO model of OSI was developed using physicochemical, biochemical, binding kinetic, and physiological properties, and then validated using nine clinical PK studies, observed EO study, and two clinical DDI studies. The PBPK-EO model demonstrated good consistency with observed data, with most prediction-to-observation ratios falling within the range of 0.7 to 1.3 for plasma AUC, Cmax, Ctrough and intracranial free concentration. The simulated time-course of C797S occupancy by the PBPK model was much lower than T790M and L858R occupancy, providing an explanation for OSI on-target resistance to the C797S mutation. The PBPK model identified ABCB1 CLint,u, albumin level, and EGFR expression as key factors affecting plasma Ctrough and intracranial EO for OSI. Additionally, PBPK-EO simulations indicated that the optimal dosing regimen for OSI in patients with brain metastases is either 80 mg once daily (OD) or 160 mg OD, or 40 mg or 80 mg twice daily (BID). When used concomitantly with CYP enzyme perpetrators, the PBPK-EO model suggested appropriate dosing regimens of 80 mg OD with fluvoxamine (FLUV) itraconazole (ITR) or fluvoxamine (FLUC) for co-administration and an increase to 160 mg OD with rifampicin (RIF) or efavirenz (EFA). In conclusion, the PBPK-EO model has been shown to be capable of simulating the pharmacokinetic concentration-time profiles and the time-course of EGFR engagement for OSI, as well as determining the optimum dosing in various clinical situations.

Offshore aquaculture's explosive growth improves the public food chain while also unavoidably adding new pollutants to the environment. Consequently, the protection of coastal marine eco-systems depends on the efficient treatment of wastewater from marine aquaculture. For the sulfamethazine (SMZ) of representative sulfonamides and total organic pollutants removal utilizing in-situ high salinity, this work has established an inventive and systematic treatment process coupled with iron-electrode electrochemical and ultrafiltration. Additionally, the activated dithionite (DTN) was being used in the electrochemical and ultrafiltration processes with electricity/varivalent iron (FeII/FeIII) and ceramic membrane (CM), respectively, indicated by the notations DTN@iron-electrode/EO-CM. Quenching experiments and ESR detection have identified plenty of reactive species including SO4·-, ·OH, 1O2, and O2·-, for the advanced treatment. In addition, the mass spectrometry (MS) and the Gaussian simulation calculation for these primary reaction sites revealed the dominate SMZ degradation mechanisms, including cleavage of S-N bond, hydroxylation, and Smile-type rearrangement in DTN@iron-electrode/EO process. The DTN@iron-electrode/EO effluent also demonstrated superior membrane fouling mitigation in terms of the CM process, owing to its higher specific flux. XPS and SEM confirmed the reducing membrane fouling, which showed the formation of a loose and porous cake layer. This work clarified diverse reactive species formation and detoxification with DTN@iron-electrode/EO system and offers a sustainable and efficient process for treating tailwater from coastal aquaculture.

Fungi are eukaryotic organisms with relatively few pathogenic members dangerous for humans, usually acting as opportunistic infections. In the last decades, several life-threatening fungal infections have risen mostly associated with the worldwide extension of chronic diseases and immunosuppression. The available antifungal therapies cannot combat this challenge because the arsenal of compounds is scarce and displays low selective action, significant adverse effects, and increasing resistance. A growing isolation of outbreaks triggered by fungal species formerly considered innocuous is being recorded. From ancient times, natural substances harvested from plants have been applied to folk medicine and some of them recently emerged as promising antifungals. The most used are briefly revised herein. Combinations of chemotherapeutic drugs with natural products to obtain more efficient and gentle treatments are also revised. Nevertheless, considerable research work is still necessary before their clinical use can be generally accepted. Many natural products have a highly complex chemical composition, with the active principles still partially unknown. Here, we survey the field underlying lights and shadows of both groups. More studies involving clinical strains are necessary, but we illustrate this matter by discussing the potential clinical applications of combined carnosic acid plus propolis formulations.

The whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Genn.), is one of the most dangerous polyphagous pests in the world. Eco-friendly compounds and new chemical insecticides have gained recognition for whitefly control. In this study, the toxicity and biochemical impact of flometoquin, flonicamid, and sulfoxaflor, alone or combined with lemongrass essential oil (EO), against B. tabaci was studied. In addition, a molecular docking study was conducted to assess the binding affinity of the tested compounds to AchE. Based on the LC values, the descending order of the toxicity of the tested compounds to B. tabaci adults was as follows: sulfoxaflor > flonicamid > flometoquin > lemongrass EO. The binary mixtures of each of the tested compounds with lemongrass EO exhibited synergism in all combinations, with observed mortalities ranging from 15.09 to 22.94% higher than expected for an additive effect. Sulfoxaflor and flonicamid, alone or in combination with lemongrass EO, significantly inhibited AchE activity while only flonicamid demonstrated a significant impact on α-esterase, and none of the tested compounds affected cytochrome P450 or GST. However, the specific activity of P450 was significantly inhibited by the lemongrass/sulfoxaflor mixture while α-esterase activity was significantly inhibited by the lemongrass/flometoquin mixture. Moreover, the lemongrass EO and all the tested insecticides exhibited significant binding affinity to AchE with energy scores ranging from -4.69 to -7.06 kcal/mol. The current findings provide a foundation for utilizing combinations of essential oils and insecticides in the integrated pest management (IPM) of B. tabaci.

Packaging plays an important role in protecting foodstuffs against physicochemical damage and microbial activity, as well as extending shelf life. In recent years, petrochemical compounds that cause environmental pollution and contamination due to their non-biodegradability have been replaced by biocompatible polymer-based films in the food packaging industry. Due to aromatic essential oils (EO), various biological activities, and their potential to replace chemical preservatives in the field of food preservation, Star Anise essential oil, which has properties, such as free radical scavenger, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral, was used as an additive in this study. Biodegradable and biocompatible polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) polymer was used as the matrix and polymer-based films were produced in 3 different concentrations. Spectral analysis, structural, chemical, and thermal characterizations, and surface morphologies of the produced films by the direct incorporation method were examined. In addition, the antibacterial activities of the films on Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Acinetobacter baumannii ATCC BAA 747 bacteria were investigated. As a result of the examinations, it was determined that an interfacial interaction occurred between the matrix and the filler, and the produced films were thermally resistant and showed antibacterial activity against Gram (+)/Gram (-) bacteria. Consequently, it can be concluded that PVA films containing Star Anise essential oil present a prospective substitute in a variety of industrial packaging systems, including those for food, medicine, and cosmetics.

The present study aimed to evaluate the leishmanicidal potential of the essential oil (EO) of Micromeria (M.) nervosa and to investigate its molecular mechanism of action by qPCR. Furthermore, in silicointeraction study of the major M. nervosa EO compounds with the enzyme cytochrome P450 sterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51) was also performed. M. nervosa EO was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results showed that α-pinene (26.44%), t-cadinol (26.27%), caryophyllene Oxide (7.73 ± 1.04%), and α-Cadinene (3.79 ± 0.12%) are the major compounds of M. nervosa EO. However, limited antioxidant activity was observed, as this EO was ineffective in neutralizing DPPH free radicals and in inhibiting ß-carotene bleaching. Interestingly, it displayed effective leishmanicidal potential against promastigote (IC50 of 6.79 and 5.25 µg/mL) and amastigote (IC50 of 8.04 and 7.32 µg/mL) forms of leishmania (L.) infantum and L. major, respectively. Molecular mechanism investigation showed that M. nervosa EO displayed potent inhibition on the thiol regulatory pathway. Furthermore, a docking study of the main components of the EO with cytochrome P450 sterol 14α-demethylase (CYP51) enzyme revealed that t-cadinol exhibited the best binding energy values (-7.5 kcal/mol), followed by α-cadinene (-7.3 kcal/mol) and caryophyllene oxide (-7 kcal/mol). These values were notably higher than that of the conventional drug fluconazole showing weaker binding energy (-6.9 kcal/mol). These results suggest that M. nervosa EO could serve as a potent and promising candidate for the development of alternative antileishmanial agent in the treatment of leishmaniasis.

Despite having current advanced therapy, vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) remains a common yet debated healthcare-associated topic worldwide due to multi-drug resistance Candida species. In our review, we outlined and highlighted upcoming values with scope of existing and emerging information regarding the possibility of using various natural molecules combined with modern technology that shows promising anti-candida activity in VVC. Furthermore, in this review, we compiled herbal drug molecules and their nanocarriers approach for enhancing the efficacy and stability of herbal molecules. We have also summarized the patent literature available on herbal drug molecules and their nanoformulation techniques that could alternatively become a new innovative era to combat resistance VVC.


There is a type of fungi called Candida that is responsible for infections like vulvovaginal candidiasis in the human vagina. Due to resistance of currently available antifungal medicines, there are side effects on the body. Therefore, researchers are studying and preparing natural-based medicine from plants which may provide very good effects on human health. Also, herbal-based medicines have shown evidence based good antifungal activity. Combinations of herbal drugs with very small-sized particles called nanomaterials have added advantage as it helps herbs (drug) to reach their target. Its activity is enhanced as it stays for longer time in the body. So, in the future more research is needed to make sure plant medicines are safe and work well on vaginal infections and its uses should be promoted so that could be a good solution for treating vaginal candidiasis.

Presl.)) essential oils (EOs) and their major constituents were assayed for their adulticidal activities against housefly, Musca domestica L., and two non-target species, stingless bee (Tetragonula pegdeni Schwarz) and guppy (Poecilia reticulata Peters). The efficacies of the mixture formulations were compared against those of the single formulations and 1.0% α-cypermethrin, a common synthetic insecticide. GC-MS analysis found that the major constituent of lemongrass EO was geranial (45.23%), and that of star anise EO was trans-anethole (93.23%). Almost all mixture formulations were more effective in adulticidal activity against housefly adults than single formulations and 1.0% α-cypermethrin. A mixture of 1.0% lemongrass EO + 1.0% trans-anethole exhibited the strongest synergistic insecticidal activity with a 100% mortality rate (KT50 of 3.2 min and LT50 of 0.07 h). The relative percentage increase in mortality rate over single formulations was between 1.6 and 91.9%. In addition, it was three times more effective than 1.0% α-cypermethrin. To find the mechanism of adulticidal action, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was done to find morphological aberrations, such as antennal and mouthpart aberrations, after the houseflies were treated with 1.0% lemongrass EO + 1.0% trans-anethole. The aberrations included deformed and abnormal shape of arista and flagellum, change in labellum pigmentation, and damage to pseudotracheae. Regarding toxicity against non-target species, all single and mixture formulations were not toxic to the two non-target species, while 1.0% α-cypermethrin was highly toxic. To conclude, a mixture of 1.0% lemongrass EO + 1.0% trans-anethole can be an excellent, natural, sustainable housefly adulticidal agent.

The surface water in coastal areas involving algae, is often affected by saline and emerging contaminants caused by saltwater intrusion, and expanding aquaculture industry. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct studies to address the issues that affect ecological safety and health of aquatic environments. This study presents the development of an enhanced electrooxidation/electrocoagulation-ultrafiltration (EO/EC-UF) membrane process using S2O42- (DTN@EO/EC-UF) for the treatment of saline water containing algae. Our results have shown that significant removal of NH3-N (95.1 %), UV254 (89.4 %) and algae (75.7 %) was achieved with the addition of S2O42- (DTN). Additionally, an optimal DTN dosage of 40 mg/L was used in the DTN@EO/EC process to enhance water purification, utilizing reactive species such as SO4·- and ·OH. After coupling with the ultrafiltration (UF) process, optimal operating conditions (DTN: 40 mg/L, current density: 4.65 mA/cm2, electrolysis: 60 s) were applied to treat the saline algae-containing surface water. The generated free chlorine, including NHCl2, accounted for approximately 22 % (0.14 mg/L). In addition, DTN significantly improved the ceramic membrane's permeability and anti-fouling characteristics, with a maximum increasing specific flux from 0.76 to 0.93, mainly attributing to the reduced the irreversible fouling resistance. Furthermore, we discovered that common membrane cleaning using acid or base enhanced the DTN@EO/EC-UF process. In conclusion, this study established an innovative DTN@EO/EC-UF process with excellent performance in terms of water purification and membrane self-cleaning. The results provided a promising alternative for treating saline algae-containing surface water.

BACKGROUND: Tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer (TBL) is one of the main cancer health problems worldwide, but data on the burden and trends of early-onset tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer (EO-TBL) are sparse. The aim of the present study was to provide the latest and the most comprehensive burden estimates of the EO-TBL cancer from 1990 to 2019. METHODS: Overall, we used data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study in EO-TBL cancer from 1990 to 2019. Evaluation metrics included incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). The joinpoint regression model was used to analyze the temporal trends. Decomposition analysis was employed to analyze the driving factors for EO-TBL cancer burden alterations. Bayesian age-period-cohort (BAPC) analysis was used to estimate trends in the next 20 years. RESULTS: The global age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR), age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), and age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDR) for EO-TBL cancer decreased significantly from 3.95 (95% uncertainty interval [UI]: 3.70-4.24), 3.41 (95% UI: 3.19-3.67), 158.68 (95% UI: 148.04-170.92) in 1990 to 2.82 (95% UI: 2.54-3.09), 2.28 (95% UI: 2.07-2.49), 106.47 (95% UI: 96.83-116.51) in 2019 with average annual percent change (AAPC) of -1.14% (95% confidence interval [CI]: -1.32 to -0.95), -1.37% (95% CI: -1.55 to -1.18), and - 1.35% (95% CI: -1.54 to -1.15) separately. The high and high-middle sociodemographic index (SDI) region had a higher burden of EO-TBL cancer but demonstrated a downward trend. The most prominent and significant upward trends were Southeast and South Asia, Africa, and women in the low SDI and low-middle SDI quintiles. At the regional and national level, there were significant positive correlations between ASDR, ASIR, ASMR, and SDI. Decomposition analysis showed that population growth and aging have driven the increase in the number of incidence, mortality, and DALYs in the global population, especially among the middle SDI quintile and the East Asia region. The BAPC results showed that ASDR, ASIR, and ASMR in women would increase but the male population remained relatively flat over the next 20 years. CONCLUSIONS: Although global efforts have been the most successful and effective in reducing the burden of EO-TBL cancer over the past three decades, there was strong regional and gender heterogeneity. EO-TBL cancer need more medical attention in the lower SDI quintiles and in the female population.

HYPOTHESIS: Methyl ester sulfonates (MES) show limited water solubility at lower temperatures (Krafft point). One way to increase their solubility below their Krafft points is to incorporate them in anionic surfactant micelles. The electrostatic interactions between the ionic surfactant molecules and charged micelles play an important role for the degree of MES solubility. EXPERIMENTS: The solubility and electrolytic conductivity for binary and ternary surfactant mixtures of MES with anionic sodium alpha olefin sulfonate (AOS) and sodium lauryl ether sulfate with two ethylene oxide groups (SLES-2EO) at 5 °C during long-term storage were measured. Phase diagrams were established; a general phase separation theoretical model for their explanation was developed and checked experimentally. FINDINGS: The binary and ternary phase diagrams for studied surfactant mixtures include phase domains: mixed micelles; micelles + crystallites; crystallites, and molecular solution. The proposed general phase separation model for ionic surfactant mixtures is convenient for construction of such complex phase diagrams and provides information on the concentrations of all components of the complex solution and on the micellar electrostatic potential. The obtained maximal MES mole fraction of transparent micellar solutions could be of interest to increase the range of applicability of MES-surfactants.

Essential oils have proven to possess great potential in the field of biomedicine due to their ability to effectively eradicate a diverse range of pathogenic microbes. In this study, the antimicrobial activity of ylang-ylang essential oil (YY-EO) was screened against twelve multidrug-resistant pathogens. The YY-EO was effective up to 536 µg/ml, with the highest inhibition zone in case of S. aureus MMCC21 and Escherichia coli MMCC24. The least effect on both Bacillus cereus MMCC11 and Klebsiella pneumonia MMCC16. The major components of the essential oil were identified using GC-MS analysis. Different gamma irradiation doses against the YY-EO were evaluated as a tool of natural decontamination. Moreover, the antimicrobial assay after irradiation proved no significant changes regarding the antimicrobial activity before and after irradiation of EO at the applied dose. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) for the EO against the tested pathogens was detected. The possible morphological changes in some of the bacterial and yeast cells at the recognized MIC and 2MIC were detected using the scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results revealed a notable change in terms of both the microbial cell population and the morphology of the tested bacterial and yeast cells. The cytotoxicity of ylang-ylang EO was evaluated against normal skin tissue culture and showed a potential cytotoxic effect at concentrated doses. These results refer to the importance of YY-EO as a natural antimicrobial agent and the possible application of YY-EO as a surface decontaminant, but they also draw attention to the importance of the EO concentration used in different applications to avoid possible toxic effects. RESUMO

The second Early-Age-Onset Colorectal Cancer Symposium, convened in October 2022, sought solutions to the barriers to early detection and care for colorectal cancer in Canada. This meeting built on a previous symposium, held in 2021 and reported in this journal. Early-age-onset colorectal cancer (EAOCRC) affects increasing numbers of people under the age of 50 in Canada and throughout the developed world. Two main themes emerged from the meeting: the importance of timely detection, and the need for a tailored approach to the care of EAOCRC. Early detection is crucial, especially in light of the later stage at diagnosis and unique tumour characteristics. Symposium participants were strongly in favour of reducing the age of eligibility for screening from 50 to 45, and promoting the development of non-invasive screening techniques such as testing for circulating tumour DNA and biomarkers. Leading approaches to care were described and discussed, which meet the unique treatment needs of younger CRC patients. Multidisciplinary practices within and outside Canada address such factors as fertility, family roles, education, careers and financial responsibilities. These models can be applied in treatment centres across the country.
