RESUMO

The fecal microbiota plays an important role in maintaining animal health and is closely related to host life activities. In recent years, there have been an increasing number of studies on the fecal microbiota from birds. An exploration of the effects of species and living environments on the composition of gut microbiota will provide better protection for wildlife. In this study, non-injury sampling and 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing were used to investigate the bacterial composition and diversity of the fecal microbiota in silver pheasants (Lophura nycthemera) and golden pheasants (Chrysolophus pictus) from Tianjin Zoo and Beijing Wildlife Park. The results showed that the abundance of Firmicutes was the highest in all fecal samples. At the genus level, Bacteroides was the common dominant bacteria, while there were some differences in other dominant bacteria genera. There were significant differences in fecal microbial composition between the golden pheasants from Tianjin Zoo and Beijing Wildlife Park. The metabolic analysis and functional prediction suggested that the gut microbiota composition and host metabolism were influenced by dietary interventions and living conditions. The results of this study provide the basis for further research of intestinal microbial of L. nycthemera and C. pictus, and valuable insights for conservation of related species.

Infectious diseases have a devastating impact on individual health and social development. Different external environmental factors will affect the scale and the speed of disease outbreaks, such as sanitary conditions and policy interventions. In this paper, we attempt to establish a dual-system susceptible-infectious-quarantine-recovered model with different environmental impacts to explore it. For the deterministic model, we calculate the basic reproduction number, simultaneously, and investigate the local asymptotic stability of the disease-free equilibrium and the endemic equilibrium. Numerical simulations and theoretical analyses verify the conclusion of this paper. It is a surprise that there is a great probability of finding a quarantine inflection point, which can effectively control the scale of infection outbreak when two different systems of infection rate and recovery rate are determined.

Exploring the elements that affect farmers' willingness to protect cultivated land is the key to improving the ecological compensation mechanism for cultivated land protection. The purpose of this study was to analyze regional differences in ecological compensation for cultivated land protection, and to explore the influence of different external environments on farmers' willingness to engage in cultivated land protection. Based on the Profitable Spatial Boundary Analysis theory (PSBA), GIS spatial analysis technology was used to analyze regional space differences and assess ecological compensation for urban and rural cultivated land protection at the micro scale. The results show that the willingness of farmers to participate in cultivated land protection is affected by the external environment and the ecological compensation offered. The trend of the comprehensive benefit of cultivated land protection ecological compensation (B) is "Λ" from the first layer to the third layer. The B value of the urban-rural junction area is the highest value. This shows that the external environment is favorable for ecological compensation in this area, which has a positive effect on farmers' willingness to protect cultivated land. B < 0 in the first and third layer, which has a depressant effect on farmers' willingness to protect cultivated land. The study results contribute to the understanding of the impact of regional differences in the external environmental on ecological compensation and farmers' willingness to engage in cultivated land protection.

The genus Plocamium encompasses seaweeds that are widely distributed throughout the world's oceans, with Plocamium brasiliense found along the tropical and subtropical coasts of the Western Atlantic. This wide distribution can lead to structured populations due to environmental differences (e.g., light levels or temperature), restricted gene flow, and the presence of cryptic species. Abiotic variation can also affect gene expression, which consequently leads to differences in the seaweeds protein profile. This study aimed to analyze the genetic and proteomic profiles of P. brasiliense sampled in two geographically distinct sites on the coastline of Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil: Arraial do Cabo (P1) and Búzios (P2). The genetic profiles of macroalgal specimens from these two sites were indistinguishable as assessed by the markers UPA/23S, rbcL, and COI-5P; however, the protein profiles varied significantly between populations from the two sites. At both sites the ribulose-1,5-biphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase was the most abundant protein found in P. brasiliense specimens. The number of phycobiliproteins differed between both sites with the highest numbers being found at P1, possibly due to water depth. The differences in proteomic profiles of the two nearly identical populations of P. brasiliense suggest that environmental parameters such as light availability and desiccation might induce distinct protein expression, probably as a result of the phenotypic plasticity within this population of seaweed.

Most studies on animal personality evaluate individual mean behaviour to describe individual behavioural strategy, while often neglecting behavioural variability on the within-individual level. However, within-individual behavioural plasticity (variation induced by environment) and within-individual residual variation (regulatory behavioural precision) are recognized as biologically valid components of individual behaviour, but the evolutionary ecology of these components is still less understood. Here, we tested whether behaviour of common pill bugs (Armadillidium vulgare) differs on the among- and within-individual level and whether it is affected by various individual specific state-related traits (sex, size and Wolbachia infection). To this aim, we assayed risk-taking in familiar vs. unfamiliar environments 30 times along 38 days and applied double modelling statistical technique to handle the complex hierarchical structure for both individual-specific trait means and variances. We found that there are significant among-individual differences not only in mean risk-taking behaviour but also in environment- and time-induced behavioural plasticity and residual variation. Wolbachia-infected individuals took less risk than healthy conspecifics; in addition, individuals became more risk-averse with time. Residual variation decreased with time, and individuals expressed higher residual variation in the unfamiliar environment. Further, sensitization was stronger in females and in larger individuals in general. Our results suggest that among-individual variation, behavioural plasticity and residual variation are all (i) biologically relevant components of an individual's behavioural strategy and (ii) responsive to changes in environment or labile state variables. We propose pill bugs as promising models for personality research due to the relative ease of getting repeated behavioural measurements.

This study investigates the effects of seasonal weather differences on the human body's heat losses in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. The provinces of Adana, Antakya, Osmaniye, Mersin and Antalya were chosen for the research, and monthly atmospheric temperatures, relative humidity, wind speed and atmospheric pressure data from 2007 were used. In all these provinces, radiative, convective and evaporative heat losses from the human body based on skin surface and respiration were analyzed from meteorological data by using the heat balance equation. According to the results, the rate of radiative, convective and evaporative heat losses from the human body varies considerably from season to season. In all the provinces, 90% of heat loss was caused by heat transfer from the skin, with the remaining 10% taking place through respiration. Furthermore, radiative and convective heat loss through the skin reached the highest values in the winter months at approximately between 110 and 140W/m(2), with the lowest values coming in the summer months at roughly 30-50W/m(2).

Predation can cause morphological divergence among populations, while ontogeny and sex often determine much of morphological diversity among individuals. We used geometric morphometrics to characterize body shape in the livebearing fish Brachyrhaphis rhabdophora to test for interactions between these three major shape-determining factors. We assessed shape variation between juveniles and adults of both sexes, and among adults for populations from high- and low-predation areas. Shape differed significantly between predation regimes for all juveniles regardless of sex. As males grew and matured into adults, ontogenetic shape trajectories were parallel, thus maintaining shape differences in adult males between predation environments. However, shape of adult females between predation environments followed a different pattern. As females grew and matured, ontogenetic shape trajectories converged so that shape differences were less pronounced between mature females in predator and nonpredator environments. Convergence in female body shape may indicate a trade-off between optimal shape for predator evasion versus shape required for the livebearing mode of reproduction.
