RESUMO

In France, 1.5 million women live with diabetes. This chronic metabolic disease disrupts every aspect of the lives of sufferers, right down to the most intimate. The impact of diabetes on women's sexuality is less well documented than for men. Yet a holistic approach to the management of the disease is essential to provide quality care.

RESUMO

During care, privacy is subject to physical or moral disrespect. This crucial right of the patient is increasingly neglected in the care-giver-patient relationship. However, it is observed that this is linked to soft skills, and that the majority of healthcare professionals have only one objective, which is the mastery of technical skills. The aim of the present study is to explore and describe in depth the place of respect for privacy in the care-giver-patient relationship in the maternity department of a provincial hospital in Casablanca-Settat region, in Morocco.

RESUMO

This study is a retrospective examination of how sexual minority women have experienced their sexuality. The analysis examined a national archival dataset that was collected online in the US and Canada to examine the relationship between gender and sexuality in 1084 sexual minority women in 2003, with a focus on butch and femme identities. It provided an understanding of how gender and sexuality interacted at the turn of the last century when the gender identity landscape differed from that of today. While this study collected data from butch and femme women approximately 20-years ago, the results have implications for how we develop situated understandings of the relationship between gender and sexuality. Findings indicated gendered patterns in sexual preferences and attraction that can shed light on how gender and sexuality have evolved in connection. At the same time, there were no differences in sexual satisfaction, which suggests that the enactment of gendered sexuality (in which attraction is structured by a gender dynamic) was experienced as empowering rather than oppressive. We examine our findings in relation to current scholarship on gendered sexuality to consider how sexuality is constructed and reconstructed across time. The findings support a view of gendered sexuality as a source of pleasure, affirmation, and positive embodiment. We theorize gendered sexuality as functioning to enhance experiences of authenticity and resist heteronormativity. The study holds implications for research on the interaction of gender and sexuality.

RESUMO

In this article, ecosexual artists and activists Beth Stephens & Annie Sprinkle re-envision our planet as a butch dyke in menopause. This displacement of the "mother" earth trope re-orients the urgent questions of climate change and consent. Acknowledging the common pitfalls of anthropomorphism, they argue that imagining the Earth as a butch dyke lover enables a radically embodied and joyous mode of environmentalist politics. Stephens and Sprinkle situate their bodies in continuity with the earth in a relationship of queer interdependency as they invent new ways of being in the world that disengage from an abusive, extractive relation to the earth through the cultivation of a loving, playful relationship with our planet. They envision Butch Earth as a switch who invites us into a multitude of embodied, sensual, mindful responses beyond the limits of self-other paradigms. To counter the dominionistic practice of extraction and exploitation, the artists propose an ethical practice of co-sense, rather than consent, in which humans attune themselves to the earth via the senses, a process enabled by repeated, communal, non-monogamous marriages to the planet. Stephens & Sprinkle's curiosity and imagination invite the reader to play and perhaps think about the Earth reciprocally in a relationship grounded by love and sensuality.

RESUMO

This article provides healthcare professionals with an overview of research on coercive control, a paramount concept for understanding domestic violence, primarily targeting women and children. It aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and integrate advances into professional practices and (psycho)education. To this end, we present the conceptual evolution of coercive control and the perpetrators' behavioral patterns, their risks for victims and professionals, their devastating impact on the rights and biopsychosocial health of adult and child victims, and the challenges posed by technology, particularly generative artificial intelligence.

RESUMO

Coercive control is a process of violence in which one person acts in such a way as to subject the other to persistent controlling behavior. In the majority of cases, these are men, and the targets are their spouses and children. The psychotraumatic consequences are innumerable, and need to be understood before they can be identified and treated. The repercussions of coercive control are numerous, whether somatic, psychological, familial, social, professional or academic. This article describes the psychotraumatic consequences for both the victim and the children.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Although men have a higher risk of developing a bladder cancer, women appear to have a poorer prognosis and a more advanced stage at diagnosis. We performed a retrospective population-based study on muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) using data from a cancer registry in a French department to compare overall and specific survival data according to sex. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included all patients living in the department of Hérault and diagnosed with MIBC between January 1, 2017 and December 12, 2019. Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed on all variables of interest. RESULTS: We included 124 women and 432 men. There was no significant difference in age or stage at diagnosis according to sex. Squamous cell carcinomas were more common in women (p<0.001). Cystectomy was more frequent in men than in women (50.7% vs 35.4%) (p=0.0039). By multivariable analysis, the independent factors for being treated by cystectomy were sex (p=0.004), age (p<0.001) and stage (p<0.001). Forty-seven percent of women received no treatment or palliative treatment. Overall mortality was 79% in women and 63.2% in men (p<0.001). The median specific survival was 10.8 months in women and 32.7 months in men (p<0.0001). By multivariable analysis, the independent risk factors for mortality were female sex (p=0.047), cT4 stage (p=0.005) and absence of cystectomy (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Our study shows that women are less often treated with cystectomy and have worse prognosis than men. The reasons for this gender difference are multifactorial.

RESUMO

Like behavioral addictions, substance misuse is a complex disorder, influenced by psychological, clinical and socio-environmental determinants. The processes that lead to addiction are common to both men and women, but patterns of use, risk behaviors and their repercussions differ. Women's access to care is often delayed because they are regularly subjected to stigmatization, violence, and economic or family constraints. Care must be better adapted to their specific needs.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Pollution is one of the world's largest risk factors for disease and premature death. In Europe, it is responsible for approximately 20% of mortality. Chemicals exposure can occur by inhalation, ingestion or skin contact and begins in utero. Pollutants can be divided into three categories: endocrine disruptors (pesticides, PFAS, plastics, dioxins, etc.), heavy metals (cadmium, mercury and lead…) and nanomaterials. Climate change and air pollution are other main health threats. METHODS: Literature review using PubMed and ResearchGate databases and institutional websites. RESULTS: Endocrine disruptors are identified as significant risk factors for the reproductive health with negative documented impacts following prenatal or adult exposure. Climate change and air pollution can cause gender-based health disparities. Numerous scientific arguments show that chemical pollution and climate change disproportionately impact women, both on a social and biological level. Populations in precarious situations among which women are over-represented suffer the most severe social consequences including in France. There are several gender-specific domestic or occupational exposures to pollutants, most often to the disadvantage of women compared to men. Finally, although very few gendered data exist in environmental health, there are sexual-based physiological vulnerabilities concerning the metabolism of pollutants and the capacity to adapt to heat. CONCLUSION: Facing this threat of gender inequity in sexual and reproductive health and rights' width, women's health professionals have a major role to play in initiating new ways to assess and reduce the environmental health burden in women.

RESUMO

The benefits of breastfeeding on the health of infants and mothers are no longer in doubt. On the other hand, the advantages in terms of maxillofacial development and the risks of prolonged breastfeeding on oral health are much less discussed. An exploratory qualitative study, carried out within the pediatric dentistry functional unit of the dental care service of the Lille University Hospital Center in 2022, aimed to analyze the knowledge, attitudes and practices in oral health of breastfeeding women. This article will discuss the gaps in prevention as well as the obstacles and levers to improving care.

Based on the assumption that women played a major role during the first years of psychoanalysis dissemination in Brazil both in introducing and expanding Freudian ideas in the country, this study outlines women's participation in the Brazilian psychoanalytic movement. To give visibility to this pioneering spirit, we divided the text in three moments. First, we contextualize women's participation in Brazilian society during the first half of the 20th century and the first emancipatory movements. We then discuss how psychoanalysis, understood as an innovative and disruptive movement, provided a fertile space of interlocution for exploring the expansion of women's participation in the public and social sphere. Finally, we articulate these hypotheses by means of the biographical outline of two outstanding pioneers of psychoanalysis in Brazil: Virgínia Bicudo and Marialzira Perestrello

Present in all social circles with proven effects on health, alcohol is the second leading cause of avoidable death after tobacco. Like men, women can be affected by alcohol misuse, or even addiction. As the female organism is more vulnerable to the deleterious effects of alcohol, women are particularly exposed in terms of risks and complications for their physical and mental health.

RESUMO

At the same level of consumption as men, specific vulnerabilities often expose women to the more rapid onset of more serious illnesses (cardiovascular and liver diseases, cancers, brain and cognitive damage, sleep disorders, risk of accidents, etc.). This worrying fact is still little known by the general population. Special prevention measures are needed, such as dedicated campaigns for women, specific guidelines for lower-risk drinking, systematic early detection of risky drinking among women, and brief intervention in the event of problem drinking.

RESUMO

Women have difficulty seeking help for alcohol-related problems. Shame and guilt are often present, which is why the caregiver must succeed in establishing a climate of trust so that things can be said, in order to best assess the impact of consumption and find alternatives. Treatment is often multidisciplinary. The nurse's role is essential, not only to identify drug use, but also to provide a link between the various players involved.

RESUMO

In France, as in other countries, more and more women are affected by alcoholism. Progress needs to be made in the early detection and management of their physical and psychological dependence on alcohol, as well as their psychopathological comorbidities.

RESUMO

Frequently linked to social isolation (widowhood, estrangement from family and friends, etc.), alcoholism in elderly women is often invisible, with a high level of dependence. It potentiates the vulnerabilities and impact of aging. What approach to care and support can geriatric teams offer? What are the care objectives?

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Current literature highlights the difficulty in identifying an optimal educational technique for maintaining continence during cough. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the effects of an educational intervention focusing on neutral posture during cough in women with cough-induced urinary incontinence (UI). METHODS: This interventional study design included women with cough-induced UI. We recorded PFMs surface electromyographic (sEMG) peak activity, and assessed symptoms and quality of life (QoL) 6 weeks after the intervention. The effect of the experimental situation was estimated using a linear mixed model, sEMG measurements during coughing were indexed to each situation and adjusted to the resting value at, and a moderation analysis was used. RESULTS/FINDINGS: Eighteen participants were included. The measurement situations (control versus experimental) did not have a statistically significant impact on sEMG peak activity during coughing: mean effect [95% CI] 3.42 [-1.28; 7.66]. Six weeks post-intervention, participants reported statistically significant decrease in urinary symptoms (P=0.0246) and significant improvement in QoL (P=0.00776). This was also particularly marked on the dimension related to effort activities (P=0.00162). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that a brief educational intervention focusing on neutral posture during cough, without voluntary pre-contraction of the PFMs, has no clinically significant influence on sEMG peak activity of the PFMs in women with cough-induced UI. However, this intervention can lead to a significant improvement in urinary symptoms and QoL at 6 weeks. These improvements seem to be independent of electromyographic PFMs peak activity recorded during cough. As such, our preliminary results pave the way for future research. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: NP4.

RESUMO

This brief and personal essay discusses Ester Hernández's and Astrid Hadad's artistic relationship, which includes a beautiful friendship that spans time and space. In particular, and from an intimate vantage point, I read two of Hernández's images that feature Hadad, which the Mexican artist has displayed in her home in Mexico City, to ponder a larger question regarding contemporary cross-border feminist and genderqueer esthetics and relations. The queer kinship between these two artists, I humbly posit, extends to the fans that come out to support Hadad's shows when she performs in cities in the U.S. with large Latinx demographics, particularly in California.
