RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) refers to irregularities in the frequency, regularity, duration, and volume of menstrual cycles, impacting about one-third of women at some point in their lives, during menarche and perimenopausal periods. This study aims to evaluate the various causes of menstrual disorders in teenage girls. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at AVMCH, Pondicherry, with ethical clearance. It included 150 girls aged 13-18 years who presented with menstrual disorders. Data were collected through structured interviews and clinical evaluations, focusing on menstrual history, socioeconomic status, associated symptoms, and investigations. Statistical analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 23 (Released 2015; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States). RESULTS: Among the etiological factors, 61.3% of patients had anovulatory dysfunction, 16.6% had early onset of PCOS, 6% of patients had hypothyroidism, 16% had ovulatory dysfunction, and 0.6% had coagulation disorder. Overall, ovulatory dysfunction (AUB-O) was predominant in teenage girls. CONCLUSION: This study helps in the early identification of the etiology of adolescent AUB and the appropriate management of menstrual disorders to improve well-being and enhance reproductive function in the future.

RESUMO

Black American adolescent girls possess a unique ability to inspire and enact change in their communities yet are overlooked in discussions of leadership and empowerment. Coupled with deficit approaches to school-based physical activity programming, positioning Black girls as physical activity leaders is missing from practice. BLinG-HealthTM (Black Leadership in Girls' Health) trained peer leaders in group fitness instruction that was instrumental in an 8-week after-school physical activity pilot program. This paper presents qualitative data illustrating the program's impact on Black girls leading peers in a group fitness setting using general inductive narrative analysis based on group interviews, observations, reflection notes, and faculty leadership testimonials. Participants exuded community, collaboration, and confidence. Peer leadership was effective but differed. Girls recognized the program's benefits and challenges while enjoying it. Black girls can lead physical activity initiatives when allowed to do so while building a community. Researchers and school and community activists should empower Black girls to lead physical activity programs, which can ultimately foster better health outcomes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of chronic active Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) disease (CAEBV) is complex, involving infection, inflammation, and in some cases malignancy. EBV reactivates in some patients, who develop a chronic disease with infectious mononucleosis-like symptoms. On occasion, it might be confused with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), based on the similar symptoms and elevated liver enzymes. We aimed to describe a similar case to remind reader of this disease. CASE PRESENTATION: A 14-year-old girl was diagnosed with AIH based on biopsy and biomarker findings 1 year prior to admission and initially presented with elevated liver enzymes, portal hypertension, and parenchymal liver disease. Despite steroid administration, her condition fluctuated, and she was admitted to the hospital several times. She underwent a renal biopsy because of massive ascites, hypoalbuminemia, and increased renal echogenicity. An evaluation for impaired liver function showed positivity for EBV IgM, IgG, and early antigen (EBEA) antibodies. A PCR-based assay showed 5265 copies/mL of EBV DNA in peripheral blood. Epstein-Barr encoding region (EBER) in situ hybridization revealed abundant positive cells. Immunohistochemistry for CD56 also showed abundant positive cells, and CAEBV was diagnosed on this basis. Chemotherapy, hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), and liver transplantation were proposed but her family refused. CONCLUSIONS: CAEBV should be considered when diagnosing AIH or in cases of treatment-refractory AIH.

RESUMO

Background: Disordered eating attitudes are characterized by abnormal beliefs, thoughts, and feelings regarding food and weight control. Dieting, intentional weight loss, and weight control affect 41-62% of girls worldwide. However, there is limited information related to disordered eating attitudes and associated factors among late adolescent girls in Ethiopia, including in the study area. Thus, the study aimed to assess disordered eating attitudes and associated factors among late adolescent girls in Gondar city, northwest Ethiopia. Methods: For this community-based cross-sectional study, which was conducted from 26 June to 26 July 2022, in Gondar city, Ethiopia, 1,188 adolescent girls were included. Multistage stratified sampling followed by a systematic random sampling technique was applied to recruit participants for the study. Data were collected using an interviewer-administered questionnaire containing the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26). Anthropometric measurements were also taken. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regressions were employed to identify factors associated with disordered eating attitudes. In the final model, variables with a p-value of < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Results: A total of 1,158 late adolescent girls (a response rate of 97.5%) participated in the study. The prevalence of disordered eating attitudes among late adolescent girls was 9.7% [95% confidence interval (CI): 7.96, 11.4%]. Having a mother who was unable to read and write [adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 3.88 (95% CI: 1.07, 14.11)], having a mother who could read and write [AOR: 4.31: (95% CI: 1.14, 16.24)], having a father who only attended primary school [AOR: 3.78 (95% CI: 1.33, 10.78)], having severe anxiety [AOR: 3.26 (95% CI: 1.42, 7.49)], and severe usage of social media [AOR: 2.80 (95% CI: 1.22, 6.46)] were factors significantly associated with disordered eating attitudes among late adolescent girls. Conclusion: This study revealed that disordered eating attitudes among late adolescent girls were relatively high. The educational status of parents, anxiety, and severe usage of social media were positively associated with disordered eating attitudes. Therefore, nutritional education for parents of adolescents who are vulnerable to unhealthy behavior is imperative. The finding also implied the importance of an inclusive strategy to mitigate the emerging problem of targeting vulnerable groups.

RESUMO

Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious infectious disease with significant mortality and most commonly affects the pulmonary system and rarely the oral cavity. Because oral tuberculosis is a rare disease, it is often overlooked in the differential diagnosis of oral lesions. Despite the recent decline in the incidence of tuberculosis, it remains a highly contagious and serious public health problem, thus requiring early diagnosis and rapid intervention. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is defined as any bacteriologically confirmed or clinically diagnosed case of tuberculosis (TB). A 17-year-old girl reported at the outpatient Department of Dentistry with the chief complaint of a swelling at the backside of mouth along with pus discharge. She noticed these symptoms approximately one month after the extraction of the left mandibular first molar. The patient was referred to the Department of Pulmonary Medicine for further investigation and treatment. Subsequently, diagnosis of EPOTB was reached on the basis of the histopathological findings and the previous personal as well as family history. Drastic improvement was observed in the general condition and a complete resolution of the oral lesion after four weeks of ATT and the patient was completely free of all the symptoms after six months of follow-up period. This case demonstrated the importance of oral manifestation of oral tuberculosis for dentist who may be the first healthcare provider to encounter a variety of oral lesions.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To report an unusual case of thyroid abscess associated with thyroid dysfunction in an adolescent girl who has a normal anatomic structure of the thyroid gland. CASE PRESENTATION: A 15-year-old adolescent girl presented with a history of fever, sore throat, and neck swelling for 10 days duration. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography neck showed findings suggestive of an abscess involving the left lobe of the thyroid gland. She had low TSH and elevated T3 and T4 levels. Here, we report a case of thyroid abscess associated with transient hyperthyroidism in an immunocompetent girl who was successfully managed with parental antibiotics without incision and drainage. CONCLUSIONS: Thyroid abscess can present with hyperthyroidism in children. So it is important to monitor all children who have thyroid abscesses for the development of permanent hypothyroidism later on. It's important to diagnose this condition as soon as possible and begin antibiotic therapy appropriately.

RESUMO

Multiple studies have documented low human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake among Chinese girls. It remains crucial to determine the parental willingness to pay (WTP) HPV vaccine for girls. We conducted a cross-sectional study recruiting 3904 parents with girls aged 9-14 in Shanghai, China, employing an online questionnaire with a convenience sampling strategy. Parental WTP, both range of payment and estimated point value, were determined for themselves (or wives) and daughters. HPV vaccine uptake was 22.44% in mothers and 3.21% in daughters. Respondents favored WTP ≤ 1000 CNY/138 USD for themselves (or wives), whereas showed increasing WTP along with valency of HPV vaccine for daughters (2-valent: 68.62% ≤1000 CNY/138 USD; 4-valent: 56.27% 1001-2000 CNY/138-277 USD; 9-valent: 65.37% ≥2001 CNY/277 USD). Overall, respondents showed higher WTP for daughters (median 2000 CNY/277 USD; IQR 1000-3600 CNY/138-498 USD) than for themselves (2000 CNY/277 USD; 1000-3500 CNY/138-483 USD) or wives (2000 CNY/277 USD; 800-3000 CNY/110-414 USD) (each p < .05). Furthermore, parental WTP was higher for international vaccine and 9-valent vaccine (each p < 0.05). Between two assumed government subsidy scenarios, parental preference for 9-valent vaccine remained consistently high for daughters (approximately 24% in each scenario), whereas preference for themselves (or wives) was sensitive to payment change between the subsidy scenarios. Using a discrete choice experiment, we found domestic vaccine was commonly preferred; however, certain sociodemographic groups preferred multivalent HPV vaccines. In conclusion, the valency of HPV vaccine may influence parental decision-making for daughters, in addition to vaccine price. Our findings would facilitate tailoring the HPV immunization program in China.

RESUMO

Adolescence is a fundamental period for female athletes to develop athletic performance, mitigate injury risk, and gain collegiate sport scholarships, but there is also a high incidence of sport-related injuries. Physical profiling and athlete screening can support the individualisation of training programmes; however, there is a lack of data pertaining to the reliability of athletic performance and injury surrogate measures in adolescent female athletes. The aim of this study was to quantify the between-session reliability of an athletic performance and injury mitigation testing battery in female adolescent athletes. A total of 31 post-peak height velocity (PHV) (3.00 ± 0.82 years) female athletes (age: 16.20 ± 1.20 years; standing height: 166.00 ± 6.00 cm; mass: 65.5 ± 10.70 kg) from various sports (track and field = 1; lacrosse = 2; basketball = 2; soccer = 3; softball = 11; volleyball = 12) completed two sessions of a multicomponent testing battery 48 h to 1 week apart including the assessment of 33 measures addressing lower-limb isometric strength, eccentric strength, reactive strength, linear sprint and change of direction speed, and lower limb control. Of the 33 measures, between sessions, 29 had a high to nearly perfect intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) (0.508-0.979), and 26 measures were not statistically significantly different between sessions (p ≤ 0.05). All measures demonstrated low to acceptable coefficient variation (CV%) (0.61-14.70%). The testing battery used can be utilised for recruitment and longitudinal monitoring within sports organisations for female adolescent athletes.

RESUMO

Background: In low-income countries, social norms play a significant role in intrahousehold food allocation practices. These norms can sometimes lead to discrimination against specific groups, posing a public health concern. This study focuses on the social norm surrounding food allocation within households and food taboos affecting adolescent girls in rural Ethiopia. Method: A qualitative study was conducted using vignettes as prompts for 20 focus group discussions and 32 in-depth interviews. The vignettes were tailored to the local context. Participants were chosen purposefully, and data were collected in a comfortable setting. All sessions were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data analysis was done using Open Code qualitative analysis software with a thematic framework approach. Findings: In the community, adolescent girls were expected to eat after serving the male family members. Those who did not follow this expectation faced sanctions such as being labeled as disrespectful and could even be insulted or beaten by their spouses and siblings. However, there were some exceptions to this rule, such as when girls were giving birth, breastfeeding, sick, or when male family members were traveling. Certain foods were also prohibited for adolescent girls, including spicy foods like chili, animal products such as meat and milk, and nuts. These foods were believed to increase girls' sexual desire, potentially leading them to engage in premarital or extramarital sex. Additionally, eating outside of the house was not considered appropriate behavior for adolescent girls in this community. Conclusion: In many households, social norms dictate that adolescent girls are not given enough food or are denied essential nutrients for their health. It is important to challenge these norms to ensure fair food distribution within households and support the healthy development of adolescent girls.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the value of single-phase gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation test in the diagnosis of central precocious puberty (CPP) in girls with different levels of body mass index (BMI). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed for the data of 760 girls with breast development before 7.5 years of age who attended the Third Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University from January 2017 to August 2023. According to the results of GnRH stimulation test and clinical manifestations, they were divided into a CPP group (297 girls) and a non-CPP group (463 girls). According to the values of BMI, the girls were divided into a normal weight group (540 girls), an overweight group (116 girls), and an obese group (104 girls). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to investigate the value of single-phase GnRH stimulation test in the diagnosis of CPP in girls with different levels of BMI. RESULTS: Luteinizing hormone (LH)/follicle-stimulating hormone at 30 minutes after GnRH stimulation had an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.985 in the diagnosis of CPP, which was higher than the AUC at 0, 60, and 90 minutes (P<0.05). LH at 30 minutes had a similar diagnostic value to LH at 60 minutes (P>0.05). LH at 30 minutes was negatively correlated with BMI and BMI-Z value (P<0.05).The AUC for diagnosing CPP in normal weight, overweight, and obese girls at 30 minutes LH was 0.952, 0.965, and 0.954, respectively (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The 30-minute GnRH stimulation test has a good value in the diagnosis of CPP in girls with different levels of BMI and is expected to replace the traditional GnRH stimulation test, but the influence of BMI on LH level should be taken seriously.

RESUMO

Vulvar lichen sclerosus (VLS) is a chronic, inflammatory disease which is accompanied by itching and pain, affecting the patient's daily life and sexual activity. However, the disease characteristics of children and adults are not completely the same. Currently, there are few studies in China that compare the characteristics of VLS between girls and adult female patients. The aim of this study was to compare the epidemiology, clinical features, and combined autoimmune diseases of VLS patients between girls and adult females, and to help clinicians better understand VLS in different age groups. We enrolled 744 female patients for analysis, divided by age into a child group (<18 years) and an adult group (≥18 years). Among girl patients, 94.6% had preadolescent onset, while among adult female patients, only 4.6% had preadolescent onset, which was a statistically significant difference. The highest percentage of adult female patients had onset during their child-bearing period (75.4%), while 20% had postmenopausal onset, with a significant difference when the three onset states were compared. White patches were equally common in both girl and adult female patients' external genital area, while mossy lesions and labia minora atrophy were more common in adult female patients. Involvement of the clitoris, labia minora, and vaginal opening area were more common in adult patients. The perianal area was more commonly involved in girl patients. We found eight cases (1.2%) of secondary squamous cell carcinoma in adult female patients. We also found that 13 patients had concurrent lichen sclerosus lesions on the vulva and extragenital region, including two girls and 11 adult females. Extragenital lichen sclerosus (EGLS) occurred mostly in the torso. Clinicians should be aware of these differences so that early diagnosis and treatment of the disease can be achieved, to avoid irreversible anatomical alterations and the risk of cancer.

RESUMO

This study examines girl child abuse in an internally displaced people's camp in north-central Nigeria and the response of community health workers. The conflict in Benue State is caused by religious differences between the natives (Tiv people) and the invading Fulani herdsmen. During these conflicts, women and girls were displaced, and they were kept in internally displaced persons (IDPs) located in different parts of the state. Literature has been extensively written on internal displacement in Nigeria, but none has been able to elucidate the health needs of girls and the various abuses girls and women are suffering in IDP camps. In this study, literature was extended (1) to explore the environment of the girl child in IDP camps, (2) to identify reasons for the abuse of the girl child in IDP camps, (3) to investigate the impacts of the abuse on the girl child in IDP camps and (4) to investigate how healthcare workers could be used to alleviate the plight of girl children in IDP camps. This is a qualitative case study, with data obtained from relevant academic literature and personal observation. The data were analysed using content analysis. Findings reveal that the girl child is suffering from psychological, economic and health challenges due to the various forms of abuse they are going through. Following the devastation in Benue State, healthcare workers from the community relocated to neighbouring states. There is a need to recall those healthcare workers and provide them with the necessary materials to assist girls in IDP camps. Recommendations are discussed.

RESUMO

Since 2018, Taiwan has included the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination into its national immunization program for junior high school girls. However, the reports of side effects following vaccination have increased parental concerns. This study investigated parental intentions regarding the HPV vaccination for their daughters and related factors in Taiwan. A total of 213 parents of girls aged between 12 and 15 years participated in an online survey. The survey collected data on various factors, including the parental intention to vaccinate their daughters against HPV; the motivation behind the vaccinations, as measured using the Motors of Human Papillomavirus Vaccination Acceptance Scale; an understanding of the reasons behind the government's promotion of HPV vaccinations; concerns regarding the side effects of vaccinations for their daughters; an awareness of the reported side effects of HPV vaccines experienced by some individuals; the exposure to information on HPV vaccines from social media; and mental health status, measured using the Brief Symptom Rating Scale. The associations between these variables and the parental intention to vaccinate their daughters against HPV were examined using a multivariable linear regression analysis model. The findings revealed a moderate to high level of intention among participants to vaccinate their daughters against HPV. Parents who perceived a greater value in HPV vaccination for their daughters' health (B = 0.524, standard error [se] = 0.039, p < 0.001) and had greater autonomy in decision-making regarding vaccination (B = 0.086, se = 0.038, p = 0.026) exhibited a higher intention to vaccinate their daughters against HPV. Conversely, parents who expressed greater concern regarding the side effects of HPV vaccines for their daughters had a lower intention to vaccinate (B = -0.762, se = 0.203, p < 0.001). Based on these findings, this study recommends integrating these factors into the design of intervention programs aimed at enhancing parental intentions to vaccinate their daughters against HPV.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: This study examined correlations among anthropometric parameters, body composition, bone parameters and predictive factors of bone mass in adolescent girls with different body fat percentages (%fat). METHODS: A total of 129 females aged 15-18 years were categorized into 3 groups using %fat-for-age at the 50th and 95th percentiles as cutoff points (normal, over, and excess %fat groups). We recorded anthropometric data and measured the speed of sound at the tibia and radius using quantitative ultrasound. Dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used to measure body composition and bone parameters, including bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and the BMD-z-score (z-score) in the lumbar spine (LS) and whole body (WB). These parameters were compared among the 3 groups using bivariate and multivariate correlation analyses. RESULTS: There were strong correlations among all anthropometric parameters, body composition, and DXA in the over %fat group. Lean parameters strongly correlated with LS and WB in the normal %fat group, whereas both lean mass (LM) and fat mass (FM) were positively correlated with BMC in the excess %fat group. The predictive factors of bone mass differed among the groups, as follows: lean body mass was predictive of BMD and BMC at both sites in the normal and over %fat groups; LM and body weight were predictive of LS-BMC and WB-bones, respectively, in the over %fat group; and FM was predictive of WB-bones in the excess %fat group. Body fat and waist circumference were negative predictors of bone mass. CONCLUSION: Predictive factors of bone strength appear to depend on the amount of body fat in adolescent girls.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To investigate serum irisin levels in girls at different developmental status and explore the significance of irisin for the diagnosis of central precocious puberty (CPP) in girls. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study 111 girls were enrolled, including 43 cases of CPP, 44 cases of peripheral precocious puberty (PPP) and 24 cases of girls with normal sexual development as controls. The data on age, weight and height, measured blood levels of luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), estradiol, and irisin were collected. Pelvic Doppler ultrasound was performed to evaluate uterine length, transverse diameter, anteroposterior diameter. The girls were divided into non-CPP group and CPP group according to gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) stimulation test. RESULTS: Serum irisin levels were significantly higher in CPP group than in PPP group and normal control group. Serum irisin level was positively correlated with basal LH level, basal FSH level, peak LH level, peak LH /FSH ratio, uterine volume, bone age, and bone age index. The area under the curve, cut-off value, sensitivity and specificity of serum irisin were 0.958, 219.255 pg/ml, 100% and 80.6%. The combined diagnosis of CPP in girls by serum irisin and serum basal LH combined with uterine volume had an AUC, sensitivity, and specificity of 0.994, 97.6%, and 100%, superior to that of the single index. CONCLUSIONS: Serum irisin level in girls with CPP is significantly increased. An irisin combined index could help the diagnosis of CPP in girls.

RESUMO

PROBLEM: The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between domestic violence awareness and attitudes toward child marriages among individuals living in Igdir city. METHOD: The correlational survey model was used in the study. The sample consisted of 814 adult individuals who lived in Igdir city, did not have any health problem, and volunteered to participate in the study between September 2022 and January 2023. Personal Information Form, Domestic Violence Awareness Scale, and Attitude Toward Child(Girls) Marriages Scale were used to collect data. Data were obtained through online environment and face-to-face interview. FINDINGS: It was found that 59.5% of the sample group were female and 27% were aged between 18 and 24 years. 61.9% of the participants were married and 88.1% were married when they were over the age of 18. In addition, 51.9% were university graduates while 50.9% of them stated that they had witnessed domestic violence. The results of the study revealed that while the variables of gender, age, marital status, education level, and place of residence affected the attitudes toward child marriages, the variables of gender, age, age at marriage, education level, place of residence and witnessing domestic violence affected domestic violence awareness. Furthermore, when examining the scales used, it was concluded that the attitude toward child marriages affected the awareness of domestic violence. CONCLUSION: Since domestic violence and child marriages are very common, it is recommended to conduct further studies on these issues and to identify support systems that will increase the awareness of the society on these issues.

RESUMO

Introduction: Pineal cysts have long been considered a benign intracranial variation. However, in our clinical practice, it has been observed that some children with central precocious puberty (CPP) who have pineal cysts experience rapid progression in adolescent development. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of CPP in girls, leading to more diagnoses of CPP among children with pineal cysts. Despite this, there is no consensus regarding whether pineal cysts contribute to CPP as one of its organic factors. This study aimed to analyze the clinical characteristics of pineal cysts in children with CPP and explore the potential effects of pineal cysts on puberty development. Methods: This single-center study retrospectively analyzed clinical data from girls aged 3 to 10 years who underwent head/pituitary magnetic resonance imaging at the Children's Hospital Affiliated to Zhengzhou University between 2019 and 2022. The study categorized the detection rates of pineal cysts based on systematic disease classification and compared the rates of cyst detection between girls diagnosed with CPP and those without CPP. Subsequently, CPP-diagnosed girls with pineal cysts were examined. Among CPP-diagnosed girls meeting the study's criteria, those with pineal cysts formed the 'cyst group,' while those without cysts were matched in a 1:1 ratio based on age and body mass index to form the 'non-cyst group.' Comparative analyses were conducted to assess the clinical characteristics between these two groups. CPP-diagnosed girls with cysts were further subdivided into three groups according to cyst size (≤5 mm, 5.1-9.9 mm, and ≥10 mm) to investigate potential differences in clinical characteristics among these subgroups. The study involved an analysis of clinical data from girls diagnosed with CPP and included imaging follow-ups to explore the progression of pineal cysts over time. Results: Among the 23,245 girls who underwent head/pituitary magnetic resonance imaging scans, the detection rate of pineal cysts was 3.6% (837/23,245), with most cases being associated with endocrine diseases. The detection rate of pineal cysts in CPP patients was 6.4% (262/4099), which was significantly higher than the 3.0% (575/19,146) in patients without CPP. In comparison to the non-cyst group, the cyst group exhibited statistically significant increases in estradiol levels, peak luteinizing hormone (LH) levels, peak LH/follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) ratios, uterine body length, and cervix length (P < 0.001). As cyst size increased, there were significant rises in LH peak, peak LH/FSH ratio, uterine body length, and cervical length (P < 0.01). Estradiol levels and left ovarian volume also showed an increasing trend (P < 0.05). Among girls who underwent follow-up imaging, 26.3% (5/19) exhibited an increase in cyst size. Conclusion: Pineal cysts are relatively common in children with CPP. They may affect the pubertal development process, with larger cysts correlating to faster pubertal development. Therefore, the authors hypothesize that pineal cysts may trigger CPP in some cases, especially when the cysts are larger than 5 mm in size, as indicated by our data.

RESUMO

Imitation that entails faithful reproduction of demonstrated behavior by reenacting a sequence of actions accurately is a fast and efficient way to acquire new skills as well as to conform to social norms. Previous studies reported that both culture and gender might impinge on young children's fidelity of imitation. We analyzed the imitative behavior of 87 children whose ages ranged from 3 to 6 years. An instrumental task was administered that offered partial (opaque apparatus) or total (transparent apparatus) information about causal connection between the demonstrated actions and their effect in achieving a desired reward. Imitative fidelity (imitating the actions that were demonstrated by an adult model yet were unnecessary for achieving the instrumental goal) increased as a function of age in boys, whereas no differences were found in girls. This lack of increase in girls can be ascribed to their displaying higher degrees of imitation fidelity at an earlier age.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Inherited bleeding disorders (IBDs) including hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, platelet disorders, mucocutaneous bleeding disorders and coagulation factor deficiencies are rarely found and under-recognized in low and lower-middle-income countries. Some patients succumbed to serious bleeding without diagnosis and treatment during childhood. AREA COVERED: Diagnosis, management, and prevention should be integrated into the existing health care system. Although some countries have not implemented appropriate health care infrastructure, an initiative plan should be set up by cooperation of experienced experts and health care providers. Identification of patients with IBDs should be started in the antenatal setting to search for females at risk of carrier state. The investigations include bleeding assessment, mixing venous clotting time, coagulogram, coagulation factor assay and mutation detection. Genotypic analysis is helpful for confirming the definite diagnosis, carrier detection as well as prenatal diagnosis for females at risk of bearing an offspring with severe bleeding manifestations. Management involves replacement therapy ranging from blood component to virus-inactivated factor concentrate. Appropriate research is an essential backbone for improving patients' care. EXPERT OPINION: Effective national strategic advocacy to manage patients with IBDs requires intensive collaboration among policy makers, health care providers, patients, and family members.
