RESUMO
Conversion and capture of carbon pollutants based on carbon dioxide to valuable green oil-field chemicals are target all over the world for controlling the global warming. The present article used new room temperature amphiphilic imidazolium ionic liquids with superior surface activity in the aqueous solutions to convert carbon dioxide gas to superior amphiphilic calcium carbonate nanoparticles. In this respect, tetra-cationic ionic liquids 2-(4-dodecyldimethylamino) phenyl)-1,3-bis (3-dodecyldimethylammnonio) propyl) bromide-1-H-imidazol-3-ium acetate and 2-(4-hexyldimethylamino) phenyl)-1,3-bis(3-hexcyldimethylammnonio) propyl) bromide-1 H-imidazol-3-ium acetate were prepared. Their chemical structures, thermal as well as their carbon dioxide absorption/ desorption characteristics were evaluated. They were used as solvent and capping agent to synthesize calcium carbonate nanoparticles with controlled crystalline lattice, sizes, thermal properties and spherical surface morphologies. The prepared calcium carbonate nanoparticles were used as additives for the commercial water based drilling mud to improve their filter lose and rheology. The data confirm that the lower concentrations of 2-(4-dodecyldimethylamino) phenyl)-1,3-bis (3-dodecyldimethylammnonio) propyl) bromide-1-H-imidazol-3-ium acetate achieved lower seawater filter lose and improved viscosities.

Biocompatibility evaluation of medical devices often relies on chemical testing according to ISO 10993-18 as a critical component for consideration. However, the precision associated with these non-targeted chemical characterization assessments has not been well established. Therefore, we have conducted a study to characterize intra-laboratory (repeatability) and inter-laboratory (reproducibility) variability associated with chemical testing of extractables from polymeric materials. To accomplish this, this study focused on two polymers, each with nine chemicals that were intentionally compounded into the materials. Eight different laboratories performed extraction testing in two solvents and subsequently characterized the extracts using gas chromatography and liquid chromatography methods. Analysis of the resulting data revealed the central 90â¯% range for the repeatability and reproducibility relative standard deviations are (0.09, 0.22) and (0.30, 0.85), respectively, for the participating laboratory methods. This finding implies that if the same sample was tested by two different laboratories using the same extraction conditions, there is 95 % confidence for 95 % of systems that the test results could exhibit differences up to 240 %. While the study was not designed to evaluate the relative impact of specific underlying factors that may contribute to variability in quantitation, the data obtained suggest the variability associated with analytical method alone is a substantial contribution to the overall variability. The relatively large reproducibility limits we observed may have significant implications where variability in extraction measurements can impact aspects of biocompatibility risk evaluation, such as exposure dose estimation and chemical equivalence assessments.
RESUMO
The CO2 adsorption capacity and the CO2/N2 selectivity of a series of Supported Ionic Liquid-Phase adsorbents (SILPs), including the novel inversely structured SILP "Inverse SILPs", are thoroughly investigated. ZIF-8, ZIF-69 and ZIF-70 were involved as the solid matrix, while ILs, having tricyanomethanide (TCM) as an anion and alkyl-methylimidazolium of different alkyl chain lengths (C2, C6, C8) as a cation, were used as the liquid constituents of the SILPs. The ultimate target of the work was to ratify a few recently reported cases of enhanced CO2 absorptivity in ILs due to their incorporation in ZIFs and to corroborate phenomena of CO2/N2 selectivity improvements in ZIFs, due to the presence of ILs. This ambiguity originates from the vague assumption that the pores of the ZIF are filled with the IL phase, and the free pore volume of a SILP is almost zero. Yet, through the integration of theoretical predictions with N2 porosimetry analysis of an actual sample, it is suggested that a thin layer of IL covered the exterior surface of a ZIF crystal. This layer could act as an impermeable barrier for N2, inhibiting the gas molecules from reaching the empty cavities laying underneath the liquid film during porosimetry analysis. This consideration is based on the fact that the solubility of N2 in the IL is very low, and the diffusivity at 77 K is negligible. In this context, the observed result reflects an averaged adsorptivity of both the IL phase and the empty pores of the ZIF. Therefore, it is incorrect to attribute the adsorption capacity of the SILP solely to the mass of the IL that 'hypothetically' nests inside the pore cavities. In fact, the CO2 adsorption capacity of SILPs is always less than the average adsorptivity of an ideal ZIF/IL mixture, where the two phases do not interact. This reduction occurs because some ZIF pores may become inaccessible, particularly when the IL forms a layer on the pore walls, leaving only a small empty core accessible to CO2 molecules. Additionally, the IL layer masks the active sites on the ZIF's pore walls. It should also be noted that the CO2/N2 selectivity increases only when the ZIF's pores are completely filled with the IL phase. This is because ILs have a higher CO2/N2 selectivity compared to the bare ZIF.
RESUMO
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory disease of the central nervous system (CNS) that progresses with demyelination and neurodegeneration. To date, many studies have revealed the key role of interleukins in the pathogenesis of MS, but their impact has not been fully explained. The aim of the present study was to collect and review the results obtained so far regarding the influence of interleukins on the development and course of MS and to assess the potential for their further use. Through the platform "PubMed", terms related to interleukins and MS were searched. The following interval was set as the time criterion: 2014-2024. A total of 12,731 articles were found, and 100 papers were subsequently used. Cells that produce IL-10 have a neuroprotective effect, whereas those that synthesize IL-6 most likely exacerbate neuroinflammation. IL-12, IL-23 and IL-18 represent pro-inflammatory cytokines. It was found that treatment with an anti-IL-12p40 monoclonal antibody in a study group of MS patients showed a beneficial effect. IL-4 is a pleiotropic cytokine that plays a significant role in type 2 immune responses and inhibits MS progression. IL-13 is an anti-inflammatory cytokine through which the processes of oligodendrogenesis and remyelination occur more efficiently. The group of interleukins discussed in our paper may represent a promising starting point for further research aimed at finding new therapies and prognostic markers for MS.

The electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) to generate feedstocks for chemical products (e.g., carbon monoxide, CO) offers a highly attractive method for achieving the closure of the carbon cycle. Ionic liquids (ILs)-functionalized Cu-based catalyst Cu2O-HKUST-1/IL1/PTFE was developed, configuring metal-organic frameworks(MOFs) based materials with high adsorption and multiple active sites. The modified electrocatalysts exhibited high specific surface area, strong CO2 adsorption capacity, abundant active sites, and fast charge transfer rate. The nucleophilic active site of deprotonation at the C2 site in imidazole ILs further improved the selectivity of proton migration and CO product generation, which was verified through DFT calculations for the low Gibbs free energy of the generated intermediate interactions. In addition, the hydrophobic interface constructed by PTFE facilitated the inhibition of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and significantly improved the efficiency of CO2 electroreduction. The Cu2O-HKUST-1/IL1/PTFE catalyst manifested a high C1 Faraday efficiency (FE) up to 96.5% and in particular 92.7% for FECO at -1.7 V vs RHE. The present work provides an efficient strategy for configuring ILs-functionalized MOFs-based materials with good hydrophobic interfaces to enhance the efficiency of CO2 electroreduction to C1 products.
RESUMO
The recovery of scandium (Sc) from highly acidic industrial effluents is currently hindered by the use of large quantities of flammable and toxic organic solvents. This study developed an extraction system using ionic liquids (ILs) and phenylphosphinic acid (PPAH) as diluents and an extractant, respectively, to selectively recover Sc from the aqueous phase. The effect of IL chemical structure, aqueous pH and temperature on the extraction of Sc was systematically investigated and the findings revealed that ILs with longer alkyl side chains had reduced Sc extraction ability due to the presence of continuous nonpolar domains formed by the self-aggregation of the IL alkyl side chain. The IL/PPAH system maintained high extraction ability toward Sc across a wide temperature range (288 K to 318 K) and the extraction efficiency of Sc could be improved significantly by increasing the aqueous pH. The extraction process involved proton exchange, resulting in the formation of a metal-ligand complex (Sc(PPA)3).
RESUMO
Despite extensive morphological and molecular studies, the phylogenetic interrelationships within the infraorder Brachyura and the phylogenetic positions of many taxa remain uncertain. Studies that used a limited number of molecular markers have often failed to provide sufficient resolution, and may be susceptible to stochastic errors and incomplete lineage sorting (ILS). Here we reconstructed the phylogenetic relationships within the Brachyura using transcriptome data of 56 brachyuran species, including 14 newly sequenced taxa. Five supermatrices were constructed in order to exclude different sources of systematic error. The results of the phylogenetic analyses indicate that Heterotremata is non-monophyletic, and that the two Old World primary freshwater crabs (Potamidae and Gecarcinucidae) and the Hymenosomatoidea form a clade that is sister to the Thoracotremata, and outside the Heterotremata. We also found that ILS is the main cause of the gene-tree discordance of these freshwater crabs. Divergence time estimations indicate that the Brachyura has an ancient origin, probably either in the Triassic or Jurassic, and that the majority of extant families and superfamilies first appeared during the Cretaceous, with a constant increase of diversity in Post-Cretaceous-Palaeogene times. The results support the hypothesis that the two Old World freshwater crab families included in this study (Potamidae and Gecarcinucidae) diverged from their marine ancestors around 120 Ma, in the Cretaceous. In addition, this work provides new insights that may aid in the reclassification of some of the more problematic brachyuran groups.
RESUMO
The function of keratinocytes (KCs) to form a barrier and produce cytokines is well-known, but recent progress has revealed many different roles for KCs in regulation of skin immunity. In this review, we provide an update on the current understanding of how KCs communicate with microbes, immunocytes, neurons, and other cells to form an effective immune barrier. We catalog the large list of genes and metabolites of KCs that participate in host defense and discuss the mechanisms of immune crosstalk, addressing how KCs simultaneously form a physical barrier, communicate with fibroblasts, and control immune signals. Overall, the signals sent and received by KCs are an exciting group of therapeutic targets to explore in the treatment of dermatologic disorders.

The adherence of pathogenic microorganisms to surfaces and their association to form antibiotic-resistant biofilms threatens public health and affects several industrial sectors with significant economic losses. For this reason, the medical, pharmaceutical and materials science communities are exploring more effective anti-fouling approaches. This review focuses on the anti-fouling properties, structure-activity relationships and environmental toxicity of quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) and, as a subclass, ionic liquid compounds. Greener alternatives such as QAS-based antimicrobial polymers with biocide release, non-fouling (i.e., PEG, zwitterions), fouling release (i.e., poly(dimethylsiloxanes), fluorocarbon) and contact killing properties are highlighted. We also report on dual-functional polymers and stimuli-responsive materials. Given the economic and environmental impacts of biofilms in submerged surfaces, we emphasize the importance of less explored QAS-based anti-fouling approaches in the marine industry and in developing efficient membranes for water treatment systems.

Ecofriendly ionic liquids (ILs) were synthesized through amidation of ricinoleic acid, the main fatty acid in castor oil, followed by a quaternization reaction to solubilize ethanol in IL/diesel blends at different ratios. As a result, stable and highly renewable, low viscous microemulsion biofuels with high oxygen content were prepared. The prepared fuel samples combine the advantages of green ionic liquids and microemulsion properties. The chemical structures of ILs were confirmed with the aid of NMR and FTIR spectroscopy. DLS analysis revealed that the ethanol particles ranged in size from 8 to 18.1 nm in all samples. As ILs ratios decrease in microemulsion from 37 to 69%, the ethanol particle sizes increase from 10 to 25%. Ethanol shows good solubilization in diesel and IL-1 is more effective than IL-2 in ethanol solubilization at low percentages of ethanol due to more oxygen atoms besides three hydroxyl groups. The ternary phase diagram indicated that the microemulsion area in the case of using IL-1 is larger than that of IL-2. The fuel properties of the prepared microemulsions are nearly close to those of neat diesel and fall within the permitted range of ASTM D975. The viscosity and density values at low ratios of ILs are found to be very close to the values of the neat diesel at different temperatures. The prepared samples show a slight decrease in cetane number and heating value compared to diesel. However, they have improved flash points, cloud points, sulfur content, and acid value. The particle sizes were checked every week and the prepared samples showed high stability with the aid of the synthesized ILs. Moreover, the prepared microemulsions stayed in a transparent appearance for more than a year and no phase separation was observed.
RESUMO
U6 snRNA is one of the uridine-rich non-coding RNAs, abundant and stable in various cells, function as core particles in the intron-lariat spliceosome (ILS) complex. The Increased Level of Polyploidy1-1D (ILP1) and NTC-related protein 1 (NTR1), two conserved disassembly factors of the ILS complex, facilitates the disintegration of the ILS complex after completing intron splicing. The functional impairment of ILP1 and NTR1 lead to increased U6 levels, while other snRNAs comprising the ILS complex remained unaffected. We revealed that ILP1 and NTR1 had no impact on the transcription, 3' end phosphate structure or oligo(U) tail of U6 snRNA. Moreover, we uncovered that the mutation of ILP1 and NTR1 resulted in the accumulation of ILS complexes, impeding the dissociation of U6 from splicing factors, leading to an extended half-life of U6 and ultimately causing an elevation in U6 snRNA levels. Our findings broaden the understanding of the functions of ILS disassembly factors ILP1 and NTR1, and providing insights into the dynamic disassembly between U6 and ILS.

Ionic liquids (ILs) are interesting chemical compounds that have a wide range of industrial and scientific applications. They have extraordinary properties, such as the tunability of many of their physical properties and, accordingly, their activities; and the ease of synthesis methods. Hence, they became important building blocks in catalysis, extraction, electrochemistry, analytics, biotechnology, etc. This study determined antifungal activities of various imidazolium-based ionic liquids against yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae via minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) estimation method. Increasing the length of the alkyl group attached to the imidazolium cation, enhanced the antifungal activity of the ILs, as well as their ability of the disruption of the cell membrane integrity. FTIR studies performed on the S. cerevisiae cells treated with the ILs revealed alterations in the biochemical composition of these cells. Interestingly, the alterations in fatty acid content occurred in parallel with the increase in the activity of the molecules upon the increase in the length of the attached alkyl group. This trend was confirmed by statistical analysis and machine learning methodology. The classification of antifungal activities based on FTIR spectra of S. cerevisiae cells yielded a prediction accuracy of 83%, indicating the pharmacy and medicine industries could benefit from machine learning methodology. Furthermore, synthesized ionic compounds exhibit significant potential for pharmaceutical and medical applications.

Cancer and related disorders are the most common cause of cancer-related mortality with the incidence of 1 in 9 among the pre-menopausal Pakistani females. among the most common ailments worldwide, indicating the importance of developing particular techniques that could help attenuate the effects of breast cancer and related outcomes. The primary aim of the current study was to review the role of inflammatory and stress markers in the development and progression of breast cancer. Four hundred ninety-eight (n = 498) patients with breast cancer and four hundred and ninety-eight (n = 498) age- and sex-matched controls were selected for this caseâcontrol study. Serum samples were obtained, and the levels of stress and inflammatory markers, including Matrix metalloproteases (MMPs), Interleukins (ILs), Heat shock proteins (HSPs), Malondialdehyde (MDA), Nitric Oxide (NO), inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS) and Tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), were determined. Most (62%) patients had metastatic breast cancer (stage III or IV) with an adverse grade (65% with Grade III and 35% with Grade II). The present study showed that the levels of oxidants such as MDA, ILs, MMPs and HSPs were significantly greater, while the levels of antioxidants such as Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Glutathione (GSH), Catalase (CAT), vitamin A, C and D were significantly lower in breast cancer patients than in controls, suggesting their diagnostic importance and role in the pathophysiology of breast cancer. Oxidants, including IL-1, HSP27 and MMP9, which are highly specific and sensitive, may be used to develop the pathophysiological pathways of metastatic breast cancer in these patients. These pathways include cell invasion, cell migration and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Therefore, we concluded that an increase in growth factors, e.g., Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), Tumour Growth Factor-beta (TGF-ß) and B-cell lymphoma (Bcl2), under the influence of these variables plays a crucial role in the metastasis of breast cancer.

Thiosulfate has been considered as a more environmentally-friendly alternative to cyanide salts for the extraction of gold from gold ores and the development of affordable, green and efficient adsorbents for the isolation of gold-thiosulfate complex (Au(S2O3)23-) from the leaching solution remains a significant challenge. To address this issue, chitosan, a natural macromolecule, was selected as a carrier and chemically modified with ionic liquids. The ionic liquids modified chitosan showed greater adsorption capacity towards Au(S2O3)23- compared with pristine chitosan. The adsorption of Au(S2O3)23- on ionic liquid modified chitosan followed Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second order kinetic models, involving an anion-exchange mechanism with liquid film diffusion as the rate-limiting step. The chitosan modified with butylimidazolium-based ionic liquid had an adsorption capacity of 5.0 mg g-1 for gold (10 mg L-1 of gold, pH 6, 2 g L-1 of adsorbent dosage), outperforming other reported adsorbents. The ionic liquid modified chitosan showed a high adsorption efficiency of up to 96.7 % for Au(S2O3)23- in an actual thiosulfate leaching solution with a desorption efficiency of 98.4 %, suggesting that the ionic liquid modified chitosan has the potential to be a eco-friendly, biocompatible and effective adsorbent for the recovery of Au(S2O3)23-.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) have revolutionised the biopharmaceutical market. Being proteinaceous, mAbs are prone to chemical and physical instabilities. Various approaches were attempted to stabilise proteins against degradation factors. Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been established as green solvents for ever-increasing pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical applications. Hence, amino acid (AA)-based ILs, were used for the first time, for mAb stabilisation. Choline (Ch)-based DESs were also utilised for comparison purposes. The prepared ILs and DESs were utilised to stabilise Atezolizumab (Amab, anti-PDL-1 mAb). The formulations of Amab in ILs and DESs were incubated at room temperature, 45 or 55 °C. Following this, the structural stability of Amab was appraised. Interestingly, Ch-Valine retained favourable structural stability of Amab with minimal detected aggregation or degradation as confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopy and protein Mass Spectroscopy. The measured hydrodynamic diameter of Amab in Ch-Valine ranged from 10.40 to 11.65 nm. More interestingly, the anticancer activity of Amab was evaluated, and Ch-Valine was found to be optimum in retaining the activity of Amab when compared to other formulations, including the control Amab sample. Collectively, this study has spotlighted the advantages of adopting the Ch-AA ILs for the structural and functional stabilising of mAbs.

Interleukins (ILs) are vital in regulating the immune system, enabling to combat fungal diseases like candidiasis effectively. Their inhibition may cause enhanced susceptibility to infection. IL inhibitors have been employed to control autoimmune diseases and inhibitors of IL-17 and IL-23, for example, have been associated with an elevated risk of Candida infection. Thus, applying IL inhibitors might impact an individual's susceptibility to Candida infections. Variations in the severity of Candida infections have been observed between individuals with different IL inhibitors, necessitating careful consideration of their specific risk profiles. IL-1 inhibitors (anakinra, canakinumab, and rilonacept), IL-2 inhibitors (daclizumab, and basiliximab), and IL-4 inhibitors (dupilumab) have rarely been associated with Candida infection. In contrast, tocilizumab, an inhibitor of IL-6, has demonstrated an elevated risk in the context of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) treatment, as evidenced by a 6.9% prevalence of candidemia among patients using the drug. Furthermore, the incidence of Candida infections appeared to be higher in patients exposed to IL-17 inhibitors than in those exposed to IL-23 inhibitors. Therefore, healthcare practitioners must maintain awareness of the risk of candidiasis associated with using of IL inhibitors before prescribing them. Future prospective studies need to exhaustively investigate candidiasis and its associated risk factors in patients receiving IL inhibitors. Implementing enduring surveillance methods is crucial to ensure IL inhibitors safe and efficient utilization of in clinical settings.

Molecular analyses of rapidly radiating groups often reveal incongruence between gene trees. This mainly results from incomplete lineage sorting, introgression, and gene tree estimation error, which complicate the estimation of phylogenetic relationships. In this study, we reconstruct the phylogeny of Theaceae using 348 nuclear loci from 68 individuals and two outgroup taxa. Sequence data were obtained by target enrichment using the recently released Angiosperm 353 universal probe set applied to herbarium specimens. The robustness of the topologies to variation in data quality was established under a range of different filtering schemes, using both coalescent and concatenation approaches. Our results confirmed most of the previously hypothesized relationships among tribes and genera, while clarifying additional interspecific relationships within the rapidly radiating genus Camellia. We recovered a remarkably high degree of gene tree heterogeneity indicative of rapid radiation in the group and observed cytonuclear conflicts, especially within Camellia. This was especially pronounced around short branches, which we primarily associate with gene tree estimation error. Our analysis also indicates that incomplete lineage sorting (ILS) contributed to gene-tree conflicts and accounted for approximately 14 % of the explained variation, whereas inferred introgression levels were low. Our study advances the understanding of the evolution of this important plant family and provides guidance on the application of target capture methods and the evaluation of key processes that influence phylogenetic discordances.

The phylogeny and systematics of the genus Allium have been studied with a variety of diverse data types, including an increasing amount of molecular data. However, strong phylogenetic discordance and high levels of uncertainty have prevented the identification of a consistent phylogeny. The difficulty in establishing phylogenetic consensus and evidence for genealogical discordance make Allium a compelling test case to assess the relative contribution of incomplete lineage sorting (ILS), gene flow and gene tree estimation error on phylogenetic reconstruction. In this study, we obtained 75 transcriptomes of 38 Allium species across 10 subgenera. Whole plastid genome, single copy genes and consensus CDS were generated to estimate phylogenetic trees both using coalescence and concatenation methods. Multiple approaches including coalescence simulation, quartet sampling, reticulate network inference, sequence simulation, theta of ILS and reticulation index were carried out across the CDS gene trees to investigate the degrees of ILS, gene flow and gene tree estimation error. Afterward, a regression analysis was used to test the relative contributions of each of these forms of uncertainty to the final phylogeny. Despite extensive topological discordance among gene trees, we found a fully supported species tree that agrees with the most of well-accepted relationships and establishes monophyly of the genus Allium. We presented clear evidence for substantial ILS across the phylogeny of Allium. Further, we identified two ancient hybridization events for the formation of the second evolutionary line and subg. Butomissa as well as several introgression events between recently diverged species. Our regression analysis revealed that gene tree inference error and gene flow were the two most dominant factors explaining for the overall gene tree variation, with the difficulty in disentangling the effects of ILS and gene tree estimation error due to a positive correlation between them. Based on our efforts to mitigate the methodological errors in reconstructing trees, we believed ILS and gene flow are two principal reasons for the oft-reported phylogenetic heterogeneity of Allium. This study presents a strongly-supported and well-resolved phylogenetic backbone for the sampled Allium species, and exemplifies how to untangle heterogeneity in phylogenetic signal and reconstruct the true evolutionary history of the target taxa.
