RESUMO

While the impact of human activities on organic matter pollution is recognized, how these impacts vary seasonally in the Changjiang Delta needs further investigation. This study addresses this gap by investigating seasonal variations in organic matter sources and ecological responses to human activities in Changjiang Delta sediments. Total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopic compositions of surface sediments collected from the Taipu River and Dalian Lake wetland were analyzed. Both water bodies exhibited similar seasonal trends for TOC and TN, with the Taipu River containing an average of 0.46% and 0.03% higher concentrations of TOC and TN, respectively, compared to Dalian Lake. Additionally, the organic index (OI) and organic nitrogen (ON) index were elevated in both water bodies during the wet season. Sediments from Dalian Lake remained uncontaminated to moderately contaminated, while those from the Taipu River were generally classified as moderately to heavily contaminated. Stable isotope analysis identified terrestrial C3 plants (averaging 25.5%), C4 plants (averaging 16.0%), and municipal wastewater (averaging 16.0%) as the main contributors to organic matter in the sediments. These findings suggest that terrestrial plant material and municipal wastewater are key targets for managing organic matter contamination in the Changjiang Delta. Implementing strategic land-use planning and targeted interventions to minimize these inputs can significantly improve water quality and ecosystem health.

RESUMO

Identifying the sources and cycling of phosphorus (P) is particularly important for formulating effective P management strategies in inland water. The oxygen isotopic compositions of phosphate (δ18OP) are recognized as a promising tool to solve this problem. However, the application of δ18OP in freshwater sediment is currently constrained by multiple difficulties. In this study, we presented a novel pretreatment method for δ18OP analysis of sediment inorganic P pools. Our results showed that the new method has advantages of simple operation, less time-consuming, and high P recovery rates. Specifically, we replaced the traditional Mg-induced co-precipitation (MAGIC) method by introducing Zr-Oxides gels with high selective adsorption function for phosphate. This made subsequent processing simpler and reduced the time consumption to ∼10 days, and the range of P recovery rates were from 88 % to 104 %. Furthermore, we emphasized the necessity of vacuum roasting following lyophilized Ag3PO4 to eliminate residual oxygen-containing impurities (e.g., NO3-, Ag2O, and organic matter). Additionally, evidences from microscopy and spectroscopy confirmed that this method ultimately yielded high-purity Ag3PO4 with the Ag:P molar ratios of 3.35:1. Importantly, combining direct synthesis Ag3PO4 between KH2PO4 and AgNO3 with the Ag3PO4 obtained by the method revealed no stark oxygen isotopic fractionation of phosphate during the pretreatment processes. The newly established δ18OP pretreatment methods here can also be extended to broader studies of the biogeochemical cycling of P in aquatic ecosystems, potentially advancing the understanding of the global P cycle.

RESUMO

This study investigated the nitrate dual isotopic compositions (δ15NNO3 and δ18ONO3) of water samples to trace nitrate sources in Lake Sihwa, which encompasses various land-use types (e.g., urban, industry, wetland, and agriculture). The biogeochemical interactions of anthropogenic nitrogen sources (e.g., soil, road dust, and septic water) were also evaluated through multiple pathways from terrestrial boundaries to the water column. Based on increased concentrations of dissolved total nitrogen (DTN; 3.1 ± 1.6 mg/L) after typhoon, the variation of element stoichiometry (N:P:Si) in this system shifted to the relatively N-rich conditions (DIN/DIP; 14.1 ± 8.1, DIN/DSi; 1.4 ± 1.8), potentially triggering the occurrence of harmful algal blooms. Furthermore, discriminative isotopic compositions (δ15NNO3; 4.0 ± 2.1 ‰, δ18ONO3; 6.1 ± 4.3 ‰) after the typhoon suggested the increased DTN input of anthropogenic origins within Lake Sihwa would be mainly transported from urban sources (76 ± 9 %). Consequently, the isotopic-based approach may be useful for effective water quality management under increased anthropogenic activities near aquatic systems.

RESUMO

A two-year field trial was conducted to investigate the effects of partial substitution of chemical fertilizer (CF) by Trichoderma biofertilizer (TF) on nitrogen (N) use efficiency and associated mechanisms in wolfberry (Lycium chinense) in coastal saline land. As with plant biomass and fruit yield, apparent N use efficiency and plant N accumulation were also higher with TF plus 75% CF than 100% CF, indicating that TF substitution promoted plant growth and N uptake. As a reason, TF substitution stabilized soil N supply by mitigating steep deceases in soil NH4 +-N and NO3 -N concentrations in the second half of growing seasons. TF substitution also increased carbon (C) fixation according to higher photosynthetic rate (Pn) and stable 13C abundance with TF plus 75% CF than 100% CF. Importantly, leaf N accumulation significantly and positively related with Pn, biomass, and fruit yield, and structural equation modeling also confirmed the importance of the causal relation of N accumulation coupled with C fixation for biomass and yield formation. Consequently, physiological and agronomical N use efficiencies were significantly higher with TF plus 75% CF than 100% CF. Overall, partial substitution of CF by TF improved N use efficiency in wolfberry in coastal saline land by stabilizing soil N supply and coupling N accumulation with C fixation.

RESUMO

To gain insight into the impact of bottom-up changes in the plankton community on planktivorous fish in the context of the decline of small pelagic fisheries in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea, we have conducted an extensive year-long study. The investigation combined biochemical analyses (proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids) with C and N stable isotope analyses (SIA) to simultaneously study phytoplankton, zooplankton, and eight planktivorous fish species (Engraulis encrasicolus, Sardina pilchardus, Sardinella aurita, Sprattus sprattus, Cepola macrophthalma, Chromis chromis, Boops boops, and Spicara maena). This study is the first to analyze both stable isotope and biochemical compositions in coastal particulate organic matter (POM) size classes (0.7-2.7 µm, 2.7-20 µm, and 20-200 µm), zooplankton size classes (200-300 µm, 300-500 µm, 500-1000 µm, 1000-2000 µm, and >2000 µm), and taxonomic groups. We demonstrated that: (1) POM stable isotope compositions varied based on its spatial origin, the taxonomic composition of its biota, and its biochemical content; (2) δ15N values increased with zooplankton size classes and groups, indicating different trophic levels; (3) Phytoplankton exhibited a lipid-rich composition (∼55%), while zooplankton and fish muscles were protein-rich (∼61% and ∼66%, respectively). Bayesian stable isotope mixing models revealed that, on average: (1) POM from oceanic waters contributed the most to the POM in the bay (>51%), with a dominance of pico-POM (∼43%); (2) The 200-1000 µm zooplankton primarily consumed nano-POM, the 1000-2000 µm zooplankton mostly consumed micro-POM (∼64%), and the >2000 µm zooplankton also mostly consumed micro-POM; (3) Mesozooplankton (200-2000 µm) constituted the main portion (∼42%) of the diet for planktivorous fish species, while macrozooplankton organisms (>2000 µm) were the primary food resource (∼43%) for both B. boops and S. sprattus. Our study underscores the complexity of the pelagic food web and highlights the bottom-up transfer of organic matter from the smallest phytoplankton size fractions to planktivorous fish.

RESUMO

Despite extensive research and technology to reduce the atmospheric emission of Pb from burning coal for power generation, minimal attention has been paid to Pb associated with coal ash disposal in the environment. This study investigates the isotopic signatures and output rates of Pb in fly ash disposal in China, India, and the United States. Pairwise comparison between feed coal and fly ash samples collected from coal-fired power plants from each country shows that the Pb isotope composition of fly ash largely resembles that of feed coal, and its isotopic distinction allows for tracing the release of Pb from coal fly ash into the environment. Between 2000 and 2020, approx. 236, 56, and 46 Gg Pb from fly ash have been disposed in China, India, and the U.S., respectively, posing a significant environmental burden. A Bayesian Pb isotope mixing model shows that during the past 40 to 70 years, coal fly ash has contributed significantly higher Pb (∼26%) than leaded gasoline (∼7%) to Pb accumulation in the sediments of five freshwater lakes in North Carolina, U.S.A. This implies that the release of disposed coal fly ash Pb at local and regional scales can outweigh that of other anthropogenic Pb sources.

RESUMO

Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) enriched with lead (Pb) has severe irreversible effects on human health. Therefore, identifying the contribution of Pb emission sources is essential for protecting the health of residents. Using the Pb isotopic tracer method, this study explored the seasonal characteristics and primary anthropogenic Pb sources for atmospheric PM in Tianjin in 2019. We calculated the contribution of Pb sources using the end-member and MixSIAR models. The results showed that Pb loaded in PM10 was more abundant in January than in July, and was strongly influenced by meteorological conditions and anthropogenic emissions. The primary Pb sources of the aerosol samples originated from coal combustion and vehicle and steel plant emissions, mainly originating from local Pb emission sources in Tianjin. The PM10-bond Pb in January was influenced by regional transportation and local sources. The MixSIAS model calculated the contribution of coal combustion as approximately 50 %. Compared with that in January, the contribution of coal combustion decreased by 9.6 % in July. Our results indicate that some of the benefits of phased-out leaded gasoline have been short-lived, whereas other industrial activities releasing Pb have increased. Furthermore, the results emphasise the practicability of the Pb isotope tracer source approach for identifying and distinguishing between different anthropogenic Pb inputs. Based on this study, scientific and effective air pollution prevention and control programs can be formulated to provide decision support for the guidance and control of air pollutant emissions.

RESUMO

Comets are considered the most primitive planetary bodies in our Solar System. ESA's Rosetta mission to Jupiter family comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P/CG) has provided a wealth of isotope data which expanded the existing data sets on isotopic compositions of comets considerably. In a previous paper (Hoppe et al. in Space Sci. Rev. 214:106, 2018) we reviewed the results for comet 67P/CG from the first four years of data reduction after arrival of Rosetta at the comet in August 2014 and discussed them in the context of respective meteorite data. Since then important new isotope data of several elements, among them the biogenic elements H, C, N, and O, for comet 67P/CG, the Tagish Lake meteorite, and C-type asteroid Ryugu became available which provide new insights into the formation conditions of small planetary bodies in the Solar System's earliest history. To complement the picture on comet 67P/CG and its context to other primitive Solar System materials, especially meteorites, that emerged from our previous paper, we review here the isotopic compositions of H, C, and N in various volatile molecules, of O in water and a suite of other molecules, of the halogens Cl and Br, and of the noble gas Kr in comet 67P/CG. Furthermore, we also review the H isotope data obtained in the refractory organics of the dust grains collected in the coma of 67P/CG. These data are compared with the respective meteoritic and Ryugu data and spectroscopic observations of other comets and extra-solar environments; Cl, Br, and Kr data are also evaluated in the context of a potential late supernova contribution, as suggested by the Si- and S-isotopic data of 67P/CG.

RESUMO

We investigated the composition, source, and reactivity of sedimentary organic matter (OM) present in aquaculture systems along the Korean coast. A multi-isotopic approach was applied to 216 surface sediments from five sections: western (W)-1, W-2, southern (S)-1, S-2, and eastern (E)-1 sections. The 15N-enriched total nitrogen signatures in the surface sediments of the W-1 section may indicate that a substantial fraction of sedimentary OM has anthropogenic origins exported through the Han River. Simultaneously, the deposition of allochthonous OM is predominant in the S sections (Jinhae and Masan Bays). The 34S-depleted patterns at the S-2 section may indicate that sulfate reduction occurring at the sedimentary boundary contributes to active OM decomposition, depending on the increased sedimentation of the aquaculture-derived OM. Our results highlight that isotopic-based source tracking near aquaculture systems provide important information for identifying anthropogenic contamination in coastal marine sediments and for improving environmental management.

RESUMO

Quantitative identification of heavy metals (HM) sources in soils is key to prevention and control of heavy metal pollution. In this study, UNMIX, PMF (Positive matrix factorization) model and Pb-Zn-Cu isotopic compositions were combined to quantitatively identify heavy metal sources in a suburban agricultural area of Kaifeng, China. Using multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) and ICP-MS, we measured Pb, Zn and Cu stable isotopic compositions, HM concentrations and HM chemical fractions in studied soils, as well as potential sources around the highly polluted site, including total suspended particle, compound fertilizer, irrigated river water and sediments. The results showed that total contents and chemical fractions of heavy metals, as well as Pb-Zn-Cu isotopic compositions presented great variation in different sites, which implied that heavy metal accumulation was obviously affected by local anthropogenic pollution source. UNMIX and PMF presented good agreement on source apportionment that industrial and agricultural activities (61.74% and 60.75% for UNMIX and PMF, respectively) were the major contributors to heavy metal accumulation in the study area. Especially, sewage irrigation and atmosphere deposition accounted for a large proportion (28.14% and 41.03% for UNMIX and PMF, respectively). Moreover, isotopic compositions of Pb, Zn and Cu in highly polluted soils and environment media gave further confirmation that sewage irrigation and atmosphere deposition were primary anthropogenic source. Therefore, combination of UNMIX, PMF model and Pb-Zn-Cu isotopic compositions showed good coordination in quantitative and specific source identification of heavy metals in agricultural soils.

RESUMO

Wild-caught seafood contains significant amounts of mercury. Investigating the mercury accumulation levels in wild-caught seafood and analyzing its migration and transformation are of great value for assessing the health risks of mercury intake and for the tracking of mercury sources. We determined the concentrations and stable mercury isotopic compositions (δ202Hg, Δ199Hg, Δ200Hg, and Δ201Hg) of 104 muscle samples collected from 38 species of seafood typically harvested from the Taiwan Shallow Fishing Ground (TSFG), Southern Taiwan Strait. Overall, the concentrations of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) ranged from 11 to 479 ng/g (dry weight, dw) and 10 to 363 ng/g (dw), respectively, and were below the threshold value established by the USEPA and the Chinese government. Demersal and near-benthic species accumulated more mercury than pelagic or mesopelagic species. The characteristics of mercury isotopes in wild-caught marine species differed in terms of vertical and horizontal distribution. Considering the known peripheral land sources of mercury (Δ199Hg ≈ 0), the mercury in seafood from the TSFG (Δ199Hg > 0) did not originate from anthropogenic emissions. The ratio of Δ199Hg and Δ201Hg (1.18 ± 0.03) suggested that the photoreduction of Hg (II) and the photo-degradation of MeHg equally contributed to mass-independent fractionation. Based on the values of Δ199Hg/δ202Hg (1.18 ± 0.03), about 67% of the mercury in seawater had undergone microbial demethylation prior to methylation and entering the seafood. Additionally, the vertical distribution of Δ200Hg in seafood from different water depths implies that mercury input was in part caused by atmospheric deposition. Our results provide detailed information on the sources of mercury and its transfer in the food web in offshore fishing grounds.

RESUMO

Estuaries are among the most productive ecosystems and dynamic environments on Earth. Varying salinity is the most important challenge for phytoplankton survival in estuaries. In order to investigate the role of iron nutrition on phytoplankton survival under salinity stress, a freshwater cyanobacterial strain was cultivated in media added with different proportions of seawater (measured with siderophore activities), and supplied with gel-immobilized ferrihydrite as iron source. Results showed that the strain grew well in media with 0% seawater supplied with ferrihydrite as iron source. Surprisingly, the biomasses in media with 50% seawater, with more newly excreted siderophore, were similar to those with 0% seawater, but better than those with 6.25%, 12.5% and 25% seawater. Smaller iron isotopic discriminations between the cyanobacterial cells associated iron and dissolved iron were observed in media with 0% and 50% seawater suggested that higher fractions of iron uptake from aqueous dissolved iron reservoir by these comparatively larger biomasses. In summary, this study proved that iron availability plays a key role in cyanobacterial survival under varying salinity stress, and suggested that siderophores introduced by seawater may accelerate iron dissolution, increase iron availability, and make cyanobacterial cells overcome the adverse effects of high-salinity, and indicated that siderophore excretion is a kind of survival strategy for phytoplankton in face of salinity stress.

RESUMO

Communities in low-income and middle-income countries (LMIC) are disproportionally affected by industrial pollution compared to more developed nations. This study evaluates the dispersal and associated health risk of contaminant-laden soil and dust at a copper (Cu) smelter in Tsumeb, Namibia. It is Africa's only smelter capable of treating complex Cu ores that contain high arsenic (As) contents (<1%). The analyses focused on the primary trace elements associated with ore processing at the smelter: As, Cu, and lead (Pb). Portable X-Ray fluorescence spectrometry (pXRF) of trace elements in soils (n = 83) and surface dust wipes (n = 80) showed that elemental contamination was spatially associated with proximity to smelter operations. Soil concentrations were below US EPA soil guidelines. Dust wipe values were elevated relative to sites distal from the facility and similar to those at other international smelter locations (As = 1012 µg/m2 (95% CI 687-1337); Cu = 1838 µg/m2 (95% CI 1191-2485); Pb = 1624 µg/m2 (95% CI 862-2385)). Source apportionment for Pb contamination was assessed using Pb isotopic compositions (PbIC) of dust wipes (n = 22). These data revealed that the PbIC of 73% (n = 16/22) of these wipes corresponded to the PbIC of smelter slag and tailings, indicating contribution from industrial emissions to ongoing exposure risk. Modeling of carcinogenic risk showed that dust ingestion was the most important pathway, followed by inhalation, for both adults and children. Dermal contact to trace elements in dust was also determined to pose a carcinogenic risk for children, but not adults. Consequently, contemporary smelter operations remain an ongoing health risk to the surrounding community, in spite of recent efforts to improve emissions from the operations.

RESUMO

Stable hydrogen and oxygen isotopic compositions in precipitation are good tracers and can provide unique information about the water cycle. Precipitation samples were collected at the Nanjing, Liyang, Yixing, and Dongshan sites in 2016, and the HDO and H218O compositions of precipitation were measured. The temporal variability of HDO and H218O compositions and deuterium-excess of precipitation were analyzed, and the influence of the water vapor source and local evaporation on stable isotopic composition of precipitation were discussed. The results indicated that:① Seasonal variations in the HDO composition, H218O composition, and deuterium-excess of precipitation occurred due to different water vapor sources during the summer and winter monsoon seasons. The HDO and H218O compositions were depleted during the summer monsoon season and enriched during the winter monsoon season. The deuterium-excess during the summer monsoon season was lower compared to the winter monsoon season. ② During the summer monsoon, the evaporation of Lake Taihu made the deuterium-excess of downwind precipitation and the downwind intercept of the local meteoric water line higher. During the winter monsoon season, local evaporation had little influence on HDO and H218O components in precipitation. ③ Both of the intercepts and slopes of the local meteoric water line were higher than those of the global meteoric water line, due to moisture recycling during the winter monsoon season and different water vapor sources between the summer and winter monsoon seasons.

RESUMO

Cloud-water samples collected at the summit of Mt. Tai Mo Shan (Mt. TMS, 957 m, a.s.l.), Hong Kong in autumn 2016 and spring 2017 were measured for molecular compositions and stable carbon isotope ratios (δ13C) of dicarboxylic acids, oxoacids and α-dicarbonyls. Oxalic acid (C2, 253-1680 µg L-1) was found as the most abundant diacid, followed by succinic acid (C4, 24-656 µg L-1) in autumn and phthalic acid (Ph, 27-363 µg L-1) in spring. Higher concentrations of Ph (192 ±â€¯197 µg L-1) and terephthalic acid (tPh, 31 ±â€¯15 µg L-1) were observed in autumn than those in spring, illustrating the enhanced contribution from fossil fuel combustion and plastic wastes burning. Stronger correlations for the shorter chain diacids (C2-C4) with NO3-, nss-SO42- and nss-K+ in autumn (R2 ≥ 0.7) than spring suggested that these diacids were mainly produced via atmospheric photooxidation following anthropogenic emissions. The δ13C values of C2 (mean - 14.7‰), glyoxylic acid (ωC2, -12.2‰), pyruvic acid (Pyr, -15.5‰), glyoxal (Gly, -13.5‰) were much higher than those in atmospheric aerosols from isoprene and other precursors, indicating that diacids, oxoacids and α-dicarbonyls in cloud at Mt. TMS were significantly influenced by photochemical formation during the long-range atmospheric transport.

RESUMO

This study aimed to develop methods for assessing and identifying nitrogen sources in the Cheongmi River, Korea, that has intensive livestock farming areas (ILFA) in its watershed. The assessment focused on the feasibility of the simultaneous use of stable isotopic compositions of ammonium (δ15NNH4) and nitrate (δ15NNO3) for identifying the main nitrogen pollution sources in the Cheongmi River watershed. Our results suggested that the organic nitrogen (Org-N) to total nitrogen (T-N) ratio could be used as an indicator for assessing the effect of livestock excreta on waterways in ILFA. We observed that the T-N concentration was much more strongly affected by livestock excreta than the T-P concentration in the mainstream of the Cheongmi River. The positive correlation was more significant between δ15NNH4 and NH4-N than that between δ15NNO3 and NO3-N for river water samples. Furthermore, the use of δ15NNH4 was more effective than that of δ15NNO3 in evaluating nitrogen variations between May and August in the Cheongmi River because the differences in δ15NNH4 between May and August were more remarkable compared to those in δ15NNO3. Finally, the simultaneous use of δ15NNH4 and δ15NNO3 showed that the dominant nitrogen source at sites M3, M4, M5, and M6, specifically in May, was livestock excreta in the Cheongmi River. The results of this study could be used for sustainable water quality management in the Cheongmi River watershed.

RESUMO

To trace the most concerned bioavailable mercury (Hg) in aquatic environment, fish samples were collected from three typical regions in China, including 3 rivers and 1 lake in the Tibetan Plateau (TP, a high altitude background region with strong solar radiation), the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR, the largest artificial freshwater reservoir in China), and the Chinese Bohai Sea (CBS, a heavily human-impacted semi-enclosed sea). The Hg isotopic compositions in fish muscles were analyzed. The results showed that anthropogenic emissions were the main sources of Hg in fish from TGR and CBS because of the observed negative δ202Hg and positive Δ199Hg in these two regions (TGR, δ202Hg: - 0.72 to - 0.29‰, Δ199Hg: 0.15 - 0.52‰; CBS, δ202Hg: - 2.09 to - 0.86‰, Δ199Hg: 0.07 - 0.52‰). The relatively higher δ202Hg and Δ199Hg (δ202Hg: - 0.37 - 0.08‰, Δ199Hg: 0.50 - 1.89‰) in fish from TP suggested the insignificant disturbance from local anthropogenic activities. The larger slopes of Δ199Hg/Δ201Hg in fish from TGR (1.29 ± 0.14, 1SD) and TP (1.25 ± 0.06, 1SD) indicated methylmercury (MeHg) was produced and photo-reduced in the water column before incorporation into the fish. In contrast, the photoreduction of Hg2+ was the main process in CBS (slope of Δ199Hg/Δ201Hg: 1.06 ± 0.06, 1SD). According to the fingerprint data of Hg isotopes, the most important source for aquatic bioavailable Hg in TP should be the long-range transported Hg, contrasting to the anthropogenic originated MeHg from surface sediments and runoffs in TGR and inorganic Hg from continental inputs in CBS. Therefore, the isotopic signatures of Hg in fish can provide novel clues in tracing sources and behaviors of bioavailable Hg in aquatic systems, which are critical for further understanding the biogeochemical cycling of Hg.

RESUMO

Comets are considered the most primitive planetary bodies in our Solar System, i.e., they should have best preserved the solid components of the matter from which our Solar System formed. ESA's recent Rosetta mission to Jupiter family comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P/CG) has provided a wealth of isotope data which expanded the existing data sets on isotopic compositions of comets considerably. In this paper we review our current knowledge on the isotopic compositions of H, C, N, O, Si, S, Ar, and Xe in primitive Solar System materials studied in terrestrial laboratories and how the Rosetta data acquired with the ROSINA (Rosetta Orbiter Sensor for Ion and Neutral Analysis) and COSIMA (COmetary Secondary Ion Mass Analyzer) mass spectrometer fit into this picture. The H, Si, S, and Xe isotope data of comet 67P/CG suggest that this comet might be particularly primitive and might have preserved large amounts of unprocessed presolar matter. We address the question whether the refractory Si component of 67P/CG contains a presolar isotopic fingerprint from a nearby Type II supernova (SN) and discuss to which extent C and O isotope anomalies originating from presolar grains should be observable in dust from 67P/CG. Finally, we explore whether the isotopic fingerprint of a potential late SN contribution to the formation site of 67P/CG in the solar nebula can be seen in the volatile component of 67P/CG.

RESUMO

Lead (Pb) isotope has been extensively used to identify sources of Pb and apportion their contributions in the environment. Conventionally, isotope ratios are used to express Pb isotopic composition. However, the linear combination of Pb isotope ratios is not consistent with mass balance. Moreover, the graphical presentations based on Pb isotope ratios are always inconsistent when different Pb isotope ratios are used. In this study, we proposed to use fractional abundance to express Pb isotopic composition to achieve more accurate and reliable source apportionment. A new method (rotation-projection method) based on fractional abundance was developed in this research. The new method compared favorably to the isotopic ratio-based method and to another fractional abundance based method using default 204Pb value (0) (Walraven's method). It allows to present four-dimensional (4-D) Pb isotope fractional abundance data in a 3-D plot. In the meantime, due to the low variation of the fractional abundance of 204Pb in the terrestrial ecosystem, the terrestrial Pb isotope fractional abundance data fell nearly on a plane, which further allows to plot the Pb isotope fractional abundance data on a two-dimensional diagram. Proper presentation of the isotopic composition data helps to achieve more accurate and reliable source identification and apportionment.
