RESUMO

Erythrasma is a common chronic superficial bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium minutissimum, a lipophilic, diphtheroid, filamentous, gram-positive bacillus and normal inhabitant of the skin flora. Commonly found in intertriginous spaces, this bacterium releases a porphyrin that causes lesions to fluoresce under a Wood's lamp, aiding diagnosis. Despite its clinical relevance, the pathogenesis remains understudied. We present a case of a 43-year-old woman with a history of hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and obesity who exhibited an erythematous eczematous plaque with characteristic coral-red fluorescence under Wood's lamp. The diagnosis was confirmed through negative skin scrapings for candidiasis and dermatophytosis. A two-week course of topical clindamycin resulted in complete resolution. Given the condition's frequent coexistence with other pathologies, accurate diagnosis and effective treatment are essential. Topical treatments are usually more convenient. The hypothesis that hydrophobic and lipophilic interactions in intertriginous areas contribute to the pathogenesis of erythrasma requires further experimental validation.

BACKGROUND: In May 2020, England implemented "deemed consent" legislation, to make it easier for individuals to donate their organs and convey their decision when alive. Families are supposed to support the decision but can still override it if they disagree. We aimed to learn more about this changed role when families were approached about organ donation. METHODS: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews with families, feedback from nurses, comparisons with audit data, and public involvement. We used framework analysis with a health systems perspective and utilitarian theory to explore if the law worked. FINDINGS: 103 participants were interviewed representing 83 potential donation cases. In 31/83 (37%) cases donation was fully supported, in 41/83 (49%) cases families supported retrieval of some organs, tissues and procedures, and in 11/83 (13%) cases families declined completely. Themes explaining why the law was not (yet) working included: Understanding and agreeing the family's role, confusion about deemed consent, not supporting the deceased expressed decisions, organ donation as too much of a harm, the different experiences of donation pathways, transition from end-of-life to organ donation discussions, experiences of 'consent', paperwork and processes. Families frequently questioned if their relative wanted to have a surgery rather than supporting the person who died to save lives. CONCLUSION: Families use the unique experience of their relative dying in intensive care to create alternate narratives whereby the outcome satisfies their own utility and not necessarily those of the potential donor. New public ongoing media campaigns crafted to be more supportive of organ donation as a benefit to transplant recipients could help families overcome the many difficulties they encounter at the bedside. IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE: The soft opt-out policy has not empowered nurses to help families at their most vulnerable to increase their support for and consent to deceased organ donation.

Optimal nutrition during infancy is critical given its influence on lifelong health and wellbeing. Two novel methods of infant complementary feeding, commercial baby food pouch use and baby-led weaning (BLW), are becoming increasingly popular worldwide. Household food insecurity may influence complementary feeding practices adopted by families, but no studies have investigated the use of BLW and baby food pouches in families experiencing food insecurity. The First Foods New Zealand study was a multicentre, observational study in infants 7.0-9.9 months of age. Households (n = 604) were classified into one of three categories of food insecurity (severely food insecure, moderately food insecure, and food secure). The use of complementary feeding practices was assessed via a self-administered questionnaire, both at the current age (mean 8.4 months) and retrospectively at 6 months. Mothers experiencing severe food insecurity had 5.70 times the odds of currently using commercial baby food pouches frequently (≥5 times/week) compared to food secure mothers (95% CI [1.54, 21.01]), reporting that pouches were 'easy to use' (89%) and made it 'easy to get fruits and vegetables in' (64%). In contrast, no evidence of a difference in the prevalence of current BLW was observed among mothers experiencing moderate food insecurity (adjusted OR; 1.28, 95% CI [0.73, 2.24]) or severe food insecurity (adjusted OR; 1.03, 95% CI [0.44, 2.43]) compared to food secure mothers. The high prevalence of frequent commercial baby food pouch use in food insecure households underscores the need for research to determine whether frequent pouch use impacts infant health.

This study compares how a modified distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) and yellow color filter (Y-CF) increase the color purity, viewing angle, and brightness of the quantum dot color conversion layer (QDCC) for micro-LED displays. We designed and built a 53-layer high-performance modified DBR with almost total blue leakage filtering (T %: 0.16 %) and very high G/R band transmittance (T %: 96.97 %) for comparison. We also use a Y-CF that filters blue light (T %: 0.84 %) and has good G/R band transmittance (T %: 94.83 %). Due to DBR's angle dependency effect, the modified DBR/QDCC structure offers a remarkable color gamut (117.41 % NTSC) at the forward viewing angle, but this rapidly diminishes beyond 30°. The Y-CF/QDCC structure retains 116 % NTSC color at all viewing angles. Because of its consistent color performance at all viewing angles, sufficient brightness, and outstanding color gamut, the Y-CF/QDCC structure is the best option for contemporary QDCC-based micro-LED displays.

OBJECTIVE: The present study examined the effects of a nurse-led family empowerment program on the quality of life of Palestinian pregnant adolescents. METHODS: This was a randomized controlled trial with a two-group pre-/post-test design. The sample consisted of 58 pregnant adolescents recruited from six governmental primary health care clinics in Palestine. Participants were randomly allocated in equal numbers to either the control group (n = 29), which received routine care, or the experimental group (n = 29), which received both routine care and the study program. Data collection instruments included a demographic form and the WHO Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQoL-BREF). Data were collected twice: at 32 or 33 weeks' gestation to establish a baseline and at 36 or 37 weeks' gestation post-test. Statistical analyses were performed and included descriptive statistics, chi-square and t-tests. RESULTS: The study findings indicated a significant increase in the mean quality of life scores of the experimental group in the post-test compared to the pre-test (P < 0.001). Additionally, pregnant adolescents in the experimental group demonstrated significantly higher post-test QoL scores than those in the control group (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The nurse-led family empowerment program emerges as a viable and efficacious alternative intervention for improving the quality of life among Palestinian pregnant adolescents. A polymer based nanocomposite (NC) material embedded with highly luminescent nanopowders could be promising for replacing traditional luminescent materials from a technological point of view. In this study, we have successfully obtained YPO4: Sm3+ /Polymer nanocomposite phosphor films by embedding YPO4: Sm3+ luminescent nanoparticles (NPs) for orange-light emitting diode (LED) applications. These luminescent NPs were synthesized using the sol gel method in different polymer matrices i.e. polystyrene (PS) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) by using direct solution mixing. The structural, morphological, and photoluminescence characteristics of the nano-phosphors and resulting NC films were examined and discussed. The emission spectra of YPO4: Sm3+ (x at.%) nano-phosphors under near-UV excitation at 404 nm were dominated by orange emission attributed to 6H5/2 →   4F7/2 (601 nm) luminescence of Sm3+ ions. The optimum doping concentration of activator Sm3+ in YPO4 matrix was found to be 5 at.%. When the doping concentration of Sm3+ was higher than 5 at.%, concentration quenching occurred. The incorporation of YPO4: Sm3+ NPs into polymer matrices indicated that the NCs retained the original luminescence properties of the luminescent NPs, although a decrease in their emission intensity was observed for the NC films, attributable to a polymer matrix effect, which dominated in PS matrix. The fluorescence decay times of NPs in the NC films were measured and compared to those of proper YPO4: Sm3+ nano-phosphors. A decrease in decay time in NC film was observed due the effective refractive index effect. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (TDPL) of PMMA NC film was studied in 100-400 K range, investigating the thermal stability of the film. Additionally, CIE coordinates confirmed the red-orange light emission of the prepared phosphors and NC films. The obtained results indicate that the synthesized polymer-nanophosphor NC films are promising candidates for orange-LED applications.

Conventional techniques for identifying heavy metal ions in water are laborious and time-consuming. Therefore, it is necessary to create innovative sensing technologies that can detect with greater sensitivity and speed. Although there have been reports of optical-based assays utilising fluorescent nanomaterials, these assays usually rely on variations in signal strength. However, this approach has significant drawbacks when it comes to environmental monitoring. Fluorescence carbon dots (CDs) have been prepared by facile synthesis from Blood berries. A homemade heavy metal optical detector is constructed to accurately identify heavy metal ions, exclusively Cr6+ ions in a water medium. Their optical emission signature varies based on the specific chromium ions in solution, and the emission intensity also changes depending on its concentration. The quenching behaviour is attributed to the interaction between the metallic cations and the fluorescent surface states of the carbon dots. Another application is the encapsulation of CDs in PVDF polymer to form a flexible film and use it as a phosphor for LED conversion.

BACKGROUND: Global nursing shortages and increasing cultural diversity in healthcare necessitate the development of culturally sensitive nurses. Intercultural learning and exchange programs have been shown to enhance nursing students' intercultural knowledge, cultural awareness, and sensitivity. However, non-technical skills such as communication, leadership, and teamwork are less emphasized in existing programs, despite their importance in facilitating adaptation to clinical contexts and ensuring patient safety across different ethnic groups. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a Collaborative Learning in a Student-led Global Classroom (CLSGC) program that employs video-based learning and student-led debriefings to enhance non-technical skills, and to explore the experiences of undergraduate nursing student participants from three different regions. METHODS: Seventy-eight nursing students from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Malmo University, and La Trobe University participated in the program. The program included three webinars on teamwork, communication skills, and leadership, facilitated through student-led discussions and video simulations. Data were collected using the Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety Teamwork Attitudes Questionnaire, and qualitative methods including focus groups and reflective journals. A paired t-test and manifest content analysis were used to analyze the quantitative and qualitative data, respectively. RESULTS: The quantitative results indicated significant improvements in the students' attitudes towards teamwork, communication, and leadership. The qualitative data shed light on the students' learning experiences, highlighting the value of cultural exchanges in exploring the importance of non-technical skills in practice, and the effectiveness of the program structure. CONCLUSIONS: The CLSGC program effectively improved nursing students' non-technical skills and enriched their clinical practice. Integrating simulation-based learning and student-led debriefing sessions to enhance nursing students' knowledge and attitudes towards teamwork, communication, and leadership is recommended in nursing education. Continuous exposure to simulation should be part of nursing education to reinforce the significance of non-technical skills in practice.

LED technology has emerged as a promising non-thermal preservation method for highly perishable muscle foods like meat and fish. Muscle foods are most susceptible to spoilage due to their high moisture content and nutrient density, which create an ideal environment for microbial growth, chemical oxidation, and enzymatic activity, which negatively alter their quality. LED treatment offers an effective solution by significantly reducing microbial loads and extending shelf life without adversely affecting sensory and nutritional properties. Specific wavelengths of LED light induce microbial inactivation through mechanisms like DNA damage, lipid oxidation, and protein alteration. Studies have shown that LED treatment can preserve the fresh-like quality of muscle foods by mitigating common spoilage processes. The advantages of LED technology include its non-thermal nature, ability to integrate with other preservation methods, and controllability in terms of intensity and wavelength. This enables for tailored applications based on food type and spoilage risks. As consumer demand grows for safe, chemical-free food options, LED technology addresses this need while enhancing food safety and quality. Further research is encouraged to optimize LED applications in various muscle food preservation contexts. With its exceptional ability to produce DNA damage in bacteria, inactivate enzymes, and malfunction biological activities, LED could serve as an inexpensive processing intervention to safeguard the quality of meat and seafood products. This review underscores the potential of LED technology as a promising alternative to traditional preservation methods for decontamination of muscle food.

Forensic science is underutilised. Operating models restricted to the support of court outcomes do not address core requirements of contemporary policing and public security, which are to disrupt criminal activity and prevent crime. Forensic intelligence (FORINT) is a principal means of enhancing the role of forensic science, emphasising proactivity and cross-case, cross-crime domain insights. To catalyse implementation, a FORINT Specialist Advisory Group (SAG) has been established under the Australia & New Zealand Policing Advisory Agency (ANZPAA) National Institute of Forensic Science (NIFS). The SAG has established a concept of operations with four lines of effort - namely, to (i) promote awareness and consistency, (ii) shape the workforce, (iii) develop information management frameworks and (iv) guide operational implementation. This aims to shift Australia & New Zealand from its present state (of substantial interagency variability) to a state of widespread, consistent and effective FORINT delivery in terms of: (a) culture, (b) information management, (c) education & training, and (d) organisation & operating environment. There are risks to implementing FORINT, in terms of privacy/confidentiality, bias/misinterpretation, and resource impost. However, these are not necessarily FORINT-specific, and solutions or mitigations exist. Moreover, these issues are outweighed by the risks of not implementing FORINT - such as a failure to reveal threats, missed opportunities, and poor resource efficiency. This paper is a call to arms. For policing and laboratories - now is the time to implement and entrench FORINT. For academia - now is the time to build foundations for this future. For supporting industries - now is the time to develop partnerships and facilitate delivery.

PROBLEM: There is a limited knowledge base available to midwives, obstetricians and women planning vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC), impeding their ability to make informed choices regarding planned place of birth. BACKGROUND: A VBAC is associated with fewer complications for both mother and baby, but little is known on the safety and success of planning a VBAC in midwifery led settings such as birth centres and home birth, compared to obstetric led settings. AIM: To synthesise the findings of published studies regarding maternal and neonatal outcomes with planned VBAC in midwifery setting compared to obstetric units. METHODS: PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL complete, Maternity and Infant Care, PsycINFO, and Science Citation Index databases were systematically searched on 16/08/2022 for all quantitative research on the outcomes for women planning VBAC in midwifery led settings compared to obstetric led settings in high income countries. Included studies were quality assessed using the CASP Checklist. Binary outcomes are incorporated into pairwise meta-analyses, effect sizes reported as risk ratios with 95 % confidence intervals. A τ² estimate of between-study variance was performed for each binary outcome analysis. Other, more heterogeneous outcomes are narratively reported. FINDINGS: Two high-quality studies, out of 420 articles, were included. VBAC planned in a midwifery-led setting was associated with a statistically significant increase in unassisted vaginal birth (RR=1.42 95 % CI 1.37 to 1.48) and decrease in emergency caesarean section (RR= 0.46 95 % CI 0.39 to 0.56) and instrumental birth (RR= 0.33 95 % CI 0.23 to 0.47) compared with planned VBAC in an obstetric setting. There were no significant differences in uterine rupture (RR= 1.03 95 % CI 0.52 to 2.07), admission to special care nursery (RR= 0.71 95 % CI 0.47 to 1.23) or Apgar score of 7 or less at 5 min (RR= 1.16 95 % CI 0.66 to 2.03). CONCLUSION: Planning VBAC in midwifery led settings is associated with increased vaginal birth and a reduction in interventions such as instrumental birth and caesarean section. Adverse perinatal outcomes are rare, and further research is required to draw conclusions on these risks.

This study investigates the influence of LED radiation intensity on the photodeposition of gold nanoparticles onto TiO2 substrates, examining their physicochemical properties and photocatalytic activities. Utilizing a range of radiation intensities and wavelengths, TiO2-Au composites were synthesized and characterized through techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The deposition process, markedly enhanced by shorter wavelengths and higher intensities, efficiently formed gold nanoparticles. This research distinctly highlights observable morphological changes in the nanoparticles; increased radiation intensity not only augmented the size but also altered their shape from spherical to hexagonal. These morphological transformations significantly improve the composites' light absorption and catalytic properties due to the surface plasmon resonance of the gold nanoparticles. Photocatalytic assessments, using metronidazole as a model pollutant, demonstrated that composites prepared with higher LED intensities showed significantly enhanced degradation capabilities compared to those synthesized with lower intensities. The findings underscore that manipulating photodeposition parameters can critically influence the structural and functional properties of TiO2-Au composites, potentially advancing their applications in environmental remediation and solar energy utilization.

Monolithic integration of color-conversion materials onto blue-backlight micro-light-emitting-diodes (micro-LEDs) has emerged as a promising strategy for achieving full-color microdisplay devices. However, this approach still encounters challenges such as the blue-backlight leakage and the poor fabrication yield rate due to unsatisfied quantum dot (QD) material and fabrication process. Here, the monolithic integration of 0.39-inch micro-display screens displaying colorful pictures and videos are demonstrated, which are enabled by creating interfacial chemical bonds for wafer-scale adhesion of sub-5 µm QD-pixels on blue-backlight micro-LED wafer. The ligand molecule with chlorosulfonyl and silane groups is selected as the synthesis ligand and surface treatment material, facilitating the preparation of high-efficiency QD photoresist and the formation of robust chemical bonds for pixel integration. This is a leading record in micro-display devices achieving the highest brightness larger than 400 thousand nits, the ultrahigh resolution of 3300 PPI, the wide color gamut of 130.4% NTSC, and the ultimate performance of service life exceeding 1000 h. These results extend the mature integrated circuit technique into the manufacture of micro-display device, which also lead the road of industrialization process of full-color micro-LEDs.

Cancer surgery is aimed at complete tumor resection and accurate lymph node detection. However, numerous blood vessels are distributed within the tumor, and the colors of the tumor, blood vessels, and lymph nodes are similar, making observations with the naked eye difficult. Therefore, tumors, blood vessels, and lymph nodes can be monitored via color classification using an operating microscope to induce fluorescence emission. However, as the beam width of the LED required to induce fluorescence emission is narrow and the power loss of the beam is significant at a certain working distance, there are limitations to inducing fluorescence emission, and light reflection occurs in the observation image, obstructing the view of the observation area. Therefore, the removal of reflected light is essential to avoid missing the diagnosis of the lesion under observation. This paper proposes the use of a beam mirror and polarizing filter to increase the beam width and beam intensity. The refraction and reflection effects of the beam were utilized using the beam mirror, and the rotation angle of the polarizing filter was adjusted to remove light reflection. Consequently, the minimum beam power using the beam mirror was 10.9 mW, the beam width was doubled to 40.2°, and more than 98% of light reflection was removed at 90° and 270°. With light reflection effectively eliminated, clear observation of lesions is possible. This method is expected to be used effectively in surgical, procedural, and diagnostic departments.

BACKGROUND: There has been a growing concern regarding research waste and the mismatch between conducted research and the research needs of knowledge users. The Needs Led Research (NLR) approach is proposed as an effective method to ensure that research address actual evidence gaps that are relevant to the users of the knowledge. By search and reviewing literature and involving knowledge users, NLR aims to identify, verify, and prioritize research needs. This paper describes and compares the implementation of the NLR approach in two separate PhD projects within maternity care, and addresses the challenges encountered throughout the processes, aiming to offer valuable insights for future NLR initiatives. METHODS: The NLR processes consisted of four phases: (1) defining the scope (2) identifying and verifying research needs (3) prioritizing research needs and (4) designing the PhD projects. Literature searches were conducted during Phase 2, while knowledge user involvement took place in Phases 2 and 3. The knowledge user involvement, at a co-thinker and advocatory level, included knowledge user groups and surveys. Project groups, who were responsible for all decision-making, conducted Phases 1 and 4. The scopes of the PhD projects were labor induction (NLR-LINO) and fetal monitoring in low-risk deliveries (NLR-LISTEN). RESULTS: In NLR-LINO, 17 research needs were identified and verified as actual evidence gaps relevant for the knowledge users. Among these, ten were rated as "very important" by a majority of the 322 survey respondents. The aim of the PhD LINO project was defined as "To investigate whether outpatient induction of labor is beneficial in a Norwegian setting." In NLR-LISTEN, seven research needs were identified and verified as actual evidence gaps relevant for the knowledge users. These were prioritized by 466 survey respondents, and the aim of the PhD LISTEN project was defined as "To investigate the methods used for fetal monitoring in low-risk deliveries in Norway and evaluate adherence to evidence-based practice while also exploring potential reasons for any deviations." CONCLUSIONS: This paper shows that the NLR is a viable approach for prioritizing research. The findings highlight the impact of the initial scope on subsequent phases and emphasize the importance of pragmatic decision-making throughout the process. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that NLR requires dedicated resources, and if integrated into PhD projects, additional time and training should be allocated accordingly.

Background: Anticoagulation therapy is crucial for managing various cardiovascular and thrombotic conditions; however, optimal delivery remains challenging in primary care. Pharmacist-led anticoagulation services have emerged as a potential strategy for enhancing patient care and outcomes in such settings. Understanding the perspectives of key stakeholders is critical for successful implementation. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the perceptions of key stakeholders involved in the implementation of pharmacist-led anticoagulation clinics in primary care settings. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using structured, pilot-tested questionnaires between August and October 2023. Patients receiving warfarin, pharmacists, and physicians working across various primary healthcare centres were invited to complete an online survey. Each group of stakeholders had individualised questionnaires to assess their perceptions and expectations with regard to developing pharmacist-led anticoagulation clinics in primary care. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Results: The response rates for the survey were 29.4% for physicians, 10.4% for patients, and 48.6% for pharmacists. Participants expressed positive perceptions toward pharmacist-led anticoagulation clinics, acknowledging benefits such as improved access to care, enhanced medication management, and increased patient education. The respondents expressed confidence in the expertise and skills of pharmacists in this role. However, healthcare providers strongly agree that pharmacists should receive additional training specific to anticoagulation management. Establishing standardised protocols and fostering interprofessional collaboration were identified as the main facilitators for practical implementation. Conclusions: Broad support exists for pharmacist-led anticoagulation clinics in primary care, though additional pharmacist training and accountability concerns need to be addressed for successful implementation.

Bacterial keratitis (BK) is a severe eye infection commonly associated with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), posing a significant risk to vision, especially among contact lens wearers. This research introduces a novel smart nanoplatform (deMS@cNF), developed from demineralized mussel shells (deMS) and reinforced with chitin (CT) nanofibrils, specifically designed for portable photothermal disinfection of contact lenses. The nanoplatform leverages the photothermal properties of eumelanin in mussel shells (MS), which, when activated by a simple bike flashlight, rapidly heats to temperatures up to 95 °C, effectively destroying bacterial contamination. In vitro tests demonstrate that the nanoplatform is biocompatible and non-toxic, making it suitable for medical applications. This study highlights an innovative approach to converting marine biowaste into a safe, effective, and low-cost portable method for disinfecting contact lenses, showcasing the potential of the deMS@cNF platform for broader antimicrobial applications.

Throughout infancy, changes in growth and development are observed, including changes in nutritional requirements; at approximately 6 months of age, when complementary feeding begins, breastmilk and/or formula are no longer the sole source of energy and nutrients. Little is known about the impact of complementary feeding (CF) approaches used during this time on infant nutrition and growth. Baby-led weaning (BLW) has continued to gain popularity over the last two decades, emphasizing the importance of examining the adequacy of different CF methods. This narrative review of 19 studies from January 2010 to April 2024 aims to discuss the differences between BLW and conventional weaning (CW). The definition of BLW varied across studies, and no standard definition has been established. Though no differences in energy were reported, macronutrient and micronutrient intakes were variable between approaches, including for micronutrients such as iron and zinc. Of the few studies with growth data, results comparing BLW and CW were conflicting. Differences were seen in the demographics of parents who chose to follow BLW and breastfeeding prevalence and duration prior to complementary feeding. Additional research is needed to understand the impacts of BLW and CW on nutrient intakes and growth to inform recommendations for infant complementary feeding approaches.

The primary goal during cancer removal surgery is to completely excise the malignant tumor. Because the color of the tumor and surrounding tissues is very similar, it is difficult to observe with the naked eye, posing a risk of damaging surrounding blood vessels during the tumor removal process. Therefore, fluorescence emission is induced using a fluorescent contrast agent, and color classification is monitored through camera imaging. LEDs must be irradiated to generate the fluorescent emission electromotive force. However, the power and beam width of the LED are insufficient to generate this force effectively, so the beam width and intensity must be increased to irradiate the entire lesion. Additionally, there should be no shaded areas in the beam irradiation range. This paper proposes a method to enhance the beam width and intensity while eliminating shadow areas. A total reflection beam mirror was used to increase beam width and intensity. However, when the beam width increased, a shadow area appeared at the edge, limiting irradiation of the entire lesion. To compensate for this shadow area, a concave lens was combined with the beam mirror, resulting in an increase in beam width and intensity by more than 1.42 times and 18.6 times, respectively. Consequently, the beam width reached 111.8°, and the beam power was 13.6 mW. The proposed method is expected to be useful for observing tumors through the induction of fluorescence emission during cancer removal surgery or for pathological examination in the pathology department.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are currently recognized as important biomarkers for the early diagnosis and prognostic treatment of cancer. Herein, we developed a simple and label-free method for the multiplex detection of miRNAs, based on entropy-driven circuit (EDC) amplification and non-gel sieving capillary electrophoresis-LED induced fluorescence detection (NGCE-LEDIF) platform. In this system, three different lengths of fuel chains were designed to catalyze three EDC, targeting miRNA-21, miRNA-155, and miRNA-10b, respectively. In the presence of target miRNA, the EDC cycle amplification reaction was triggered, generating numerous stable double-strands products (F-DNA/L-DNA). Since the three miRNAs correspond to three different lengths of F-DNA/L-DNA, they can be easily isolated and detected by NGCE. This strategy has good sensitivity, with detection limits of 68 amol, 292.2 amol, and 394 amol for miRNA-21, miRNA-155, and miRNA-10b, respectively. Additionally, this method has good specificity and can effectively distinguish single-base mismatches of miRNA. The recoveries of the three miRNAs in deproteinized healthy human serum ranged from 91.28 % to 108.4 %, with a relative standard deviation (RSD) of less than 7.9 %. This method was further applied to detect cellular miRNAs in human breast cancer (MCF-7) cell extracts, revealing an up-regulation of miRNA-21, miRNA-155, and miRNA-10b in MCF-7 cells. The successful spiked recovery in human serum and RNA extraction from MCF-7 cells underscores the practicality of this method. Therefore, this strategy has broad application prospects in biomedical research.
