RESUMO

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate (1) the type and frequency of reported life events of the East German population related to the German reunification and (2) their associations with psychosocial health. Methods: Data of 2247 participants of the Study of Health in Pomerania was used. These qualitative responses were analysed using quantitative content analysis. Their associations with subjective physical and mental health, optimism, social support, depressive symptoms, and chronic stress were examined. Results: Eight life event categories were identified (education, employment-related changes, material changes, new opportunities, personal life events, politics, separations, reunifications). Especially, experiencing new opportunities was associated with a higher level of optimism as well as a lower level of depressive symptoms and chronic stress. Conclusions: In this study, events frequently described in the literature (e.g., employment-related and social changes) were confirmed and systematized. The observed associations of these events with psychosocial factors should be examined further in future studies.

RESUMO

Diagnostic work with the conflict axis of the OPD-CA: Empirical results on inpatients and outpatients Abstract. In recent years, the Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnostics (OPD-CA) is increasingly being used in child and adolescent psychiatry and psychotherapy. This article presents the conflict axis of the OPD-CA, which contains an operationalization of seven psychodynamic conflicts and the processing modes assigned to them. It describes empirical comparisons of the conflict axis ratings and the structure rating in a group of outpatient and inpatient children and adolescents (total N = 186, 12.7 years, 54 % female). The findings in the total sample show that diagnosis-specific gender differences are disappearing, and that male and female patients have largely similar intrapsychic development-impairing conflicts. Patients in inpatient treatment in a child and adolescent psychiatry institution, however, more often show a self-conflict and, as expected, have a lower structural level than patients of the same age in outpatient psychotherapy. The number of highly stressful events before the start of therapy is also significantly higher in this group, which may have contributed to the structural deficits. For outpatients, there is a strikingly higher level of guilt and identity conflicts. In both samples, the mode of processing the conflicts is largely passive. Based on these findings, possible implications for therapeutic practice are discussed.

RESUMO

The Importance of Critical Life Events During Childhood for the Mental Health of Adolescents - Results of a 10-Year Catamnesis Abstract. Objective: This longitudinal study examines the influence of critical life events in childhood on mental disorders in childhood and adolescence. It includes parental mental disorders and parenting behavior as mediators. The review is carried out using structural equation models, separately for maternal and paternal mediators. Method: The sample consisted of 249 families examined at six measurement points (pre to FU10); the average age of the children was 4 years, that of the adolescents 10 years later thus 14 years (FU10). Information on critical life events was collected based on a defined list. Results: In the case of mothers, the influence of critical life events on mental disorders in childhood is completely mediated by the mental health of the mother and their dysfunctional parenting. The mediation effect of fathers' mental health is significantly less than that of the mothers (partial mediation), while their parenting behavior showed no mediating influence. Mental disorders in adolescence can be predicted primarily through mental disorders in childhood. There are no significant differences between internalizing and externalizing disorders. Conclusions: Parental mental health and parenting behavior, in particular of the mother, provide concrete starting points for prevention and intervention programs. Future studies should include mothers and fathers alike. Especially the role of fathers should be examined more closely.

RESUMO

Attachment Representations, Critical Life Events and ADHD in Boys at 6 to 10 Years of Age The importance of the attachment theory was repeatedly pointed out in the literature for understanding children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) with regard to their emotional state. Symptoms of ADHD, like attention deficits, motor agitation and impulsivity are seen as risk factors for insecure attachment in the parent-child relationship. The acquisition of attachment representations in children with ADHD might help to describe - and individual classify - the syndromes of this behavioural disorder better. The aims of the present study are, therefore, the investigation of attachment representations and critical life events in boys with ADHD. We focused on boys only, since they are particularly prone to develop ADHD. Using the story-completion technique, we investigated whether boys with ADHD showed insecure attachment more frequently compared to boys without ADHD. 31 boys with ADHD at six to ten years of age were recruited in two different clinics. Of these, 29 % showed a secure and 71 % showed an insecure attachment representation. Within insecure attachment, the ambivalent attachment representation occurred most frequently (41 %). On average, we found 2.3 critical life events. The enhanced frequency of the ambivalent attachment representation indicates that ADHD might be linked to externalizing behaviour. The results support the hypothesis that ADHD is increasingly associated with insecure attachment. The binding theory is able to contribute to a better understanding of the emotional state in boys with ADHD.

RESUMO

Refuge in Digital Worlds - the Association of Critical Life Events with Pathological Internet Use in Adolescence The present study sought to clarify the potential relationship between critical life events and pathological internet use in adolescents. A cross-sectional survey was conducted within the framework of a European school-based study (SEYLE) which included a representative sample of 1,444 students from the Rhein-Neckar catchment area. The Young Diagnostic Questionnaire (YDQ) was used to assess pathological internet use, whereas a combination of the List of Threatening Experiences (LTE) and Life Events Checklist (LCE) was administered to assess critical life events over the period of the last six months. Statistical models were adjusted for the presence of psychopathological distress using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ). 4.8 % of the participating students reported pathological internet use, 14.5 % met criteria for risky Internet use. Overall, adolescents with risky or pathological internet use recalled more critical life events, particularly within the context of interpersonal relationships and academic performance. After adjusting for sociodemographic variables and psychopathological distress, results showed that an unexpected decrease in academic performance as well as the termination of a romantic relationship, both were significantly associated with pathological internet use. Adolescents with pathological internet use reported significantly more frequent interpersonal problems and an unexpected decrease of academic performance. Based on the cross-sectional nature of the investigation, causality of the association cannot be established. However, results point towards potential risk factors (academic performance, termination of relationships) which may guide the identification of adolescents with risky or pathological internet use in child- and adolescent psychiatry.
