Study design: A quasi-experimental study utilized a matched-pair design, administering photobiomodulation at four-sites on one side of the body and assigning control to the other side at corresponding sites. Objectives: This study aimed to assess photobiomodulation treatment effects on bone mineral density (BMD) measurement using dual-energy X-ray-absorptiometry in individuals with complete spinal cord injury (C.SCI) and osteoporosis. Methods: Eight patients received treatment at four-sites: forearm-mid-distal (MID), proximal-femur, distal-femur, and proximal-tibia, totaling 32 sites. Using an 830 nm gallium-aluminum-arsenide semiconductor laser irradiation was administered three times weekly for 8 weeks. Different doses (energy density) were determined depending on bone depth from skin surface, as assessed by sonography and adjusted through irradiation time to be 8, 10, and 12 J/cm2 for depths <1 cm, between 1 and 1.5 cm, and >1.5 cm, respectively, using 200 mW power to deliver the optimal isodose of laser at each depth of bone within each therapeutic site. BMD was measured at baseline, week 8 of treatment, and week 15 of follow-up. Serum 25-(OH)-vitamin D and bone formation markers including osteocalcin and bone-alkaline-phosphatase (B-ALP) were also assessed at baseline and week 8 of treatment. Results: Significant increases in BMD were noted in proximal-femur and forearm-MID at both week 8 and week 15. Serum 25-(OH)-vitamin D levels significantly increased after treatment. However, no notable changes were observed in distal-femur and proximal-tibia BMD or in osteocalcin and B-ALP levels. Conclusions: Photobiomodulation (830 nm) laser demonstrated efficacy in improving BMD at proximal-femur and forearm-MID in individuals with C.SCI. Moreover, the observed positive influence on vitamin D levels suggests a potential photobiomodulation role, warranting further investigation.

Research into the efficacy of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) in reducing inflammation has been ongoing for years, but standards for irradiation methodology still need to be developed. This study aimed to test whether PBMT stimulates in vitro human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to synthesize pro-inflammatory cytokines, including chemokines. PBMCs were irradiated with laser radiation at two wavelengths simultaneously (λ = 808 nm in continuous emission and λ = 905 nm in pulsed emission). The laser radiation energy was dosed in one dose as a whole (5 J, 15 J, 20 J) or in a fractionated way (5 J + 15 J and 15 J + 5 J) with a frequency of 500, 1,500 and 2,000 Hz. The surface power densities were 177, 214 and 230 mW/cm2, respectively. A pro-inflammatory effect was observed at both the transcript and protein levels for IL-1ß after PBMT at the energy doses 5 J and 20 J (ƒ=500 Hz) and only at the transcript level after application of PBMT at energy doses of 20 J (ƒ= 1,500; ƒ=2,000 Hz) and 5 + 15 J (ƒ=500 Hz). An increase in CCL2 and CCL3 mRNA expression was observed after PBMT at 5 + 15 J (ƒ=1,500 Hz) and 15 + 5 J (ƒ=2,000 Hz) and CCL3 concentration after application of an energy dose of 15 J (frequency of 500 Hz). Even though PBMT can induce mRNA synthesis and stimulate PBMCs to produce selected pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, it is necessary to elucidate the impact of the simultaneous emission of two wavelengths on the inflammatory response mechanisms.

Photobiomodulation (PBM) has been shown to be promising for the promotion of angiogenesis. The present study investigated the effects of PBM on vascularization in an animal model of peripheral artery disease. Wistar rats were divided into three groups. The control group received no procedures. The ischemia group was submitted to ligation of the femoral artery of the hindleg. The ischemia + PBM group was submitted to ligation of the femoral artery followed by PBM (660 and 808 nm, 100 mW, 4 J) over the site. Animals with ischemia treated with PBM exhibited comparable results to the control group with regards to the diameter of the α-SMA+ vessels, cross-sectional area of muscle fibers, percentage of collagen and serum concentration of IL-17A, as well as similarities in terms of vertical mobility, temperature of the hindleg, number of acts of grooming, and percentage of movement, indicating a condition like that of limbs unaffected by ischemia.

Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory chronic autoimmune and neurodegenerative disorder of the brain and spinal cord, resulting in loss of motor, sensorial, and cognitive function. Among the non-pharmacological interventions for several brain conditions, photobiomodulation (PBM) has gained attention in medical society for its neuroprotective effects. We systematically reviewed the effects of PBM on MS. Methods: We conducted a systematic search on the bibliographic databases (PubMed and ScienceDirect) with the keywords based on MeSH terms: PBM, low-level laser therapy, multiple sclerosis, autoimmune encephalomyelitis, demyelination, and progressive multiple sclerosis. Data search was limited from 2012 to July 2024. We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The initial systematic search identified 126 articles. Of these, 68 articles were removed by duplicity and 50 by screening. Thus, 8 studies satisfied the inclusion criteria. Results: The reviewed studies showed that PBM modulates brain markers linked to inflammation, oxidative stress, and apoptosis. Improvements in motor, sensorial, and cognitive functions in MS patients were also observed after PBM therapy. No study reported adverse effects of PBM. Conclusion: These findings suggest the potential of PBM as a promising non-pharmacological intervention for the management of MS, although further research is needed to standardize PBM protocols and assess its long-term effects.

Introduction: The most prevalent conditions in the population are temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), which are linked to a number of morbidities. A number of treatment options have been proposed, and some of the most successful ones include low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) therapy. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of two therapies-TENS treatment and LLLT-in the management of morbidities related to temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders. Materials and Methods: Based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 50 patients who had been sent to the oral medicine outpatient department and had been pre-diagnosed with TMJ disorders were randomly assigned to two groups, with 25 patients in each: Group I received TENS therapy, while Group II received LLLT. The acquired data was assessed statistically. Result: Both groups showed a substantial decrease in discomfort, an increase in mouth opening, and a decrease in muscular tenderness when compared to within groups. LLT was more effective than TENS for TMD treatment. Conclusion: While TENS and LLLT both had good results, LLLT appeared to outperform TENS therapy in terms of muscle tenderness factors.

Appropriate regeneration of jawbone after dental or surgical procedures relies on the recruitment of osteoprogenitor cells able to differentiate into matrix-producing osteoblasts. In this context, photobiomodulation (PBM) has emerged as promising therapy to improve tissue regeneration and to facilitate wound healing processes. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of PBM on human osteoprogenitor cells isolated from mandibular trabecular bone.Bone marrow stromal cell cultures were established from 4 donors and induced toward osteogenic differentiation for 14 days in a standard osteogenic assay. Cells were irradiated with a combined red/near-infrared (NIR) laser following different schedules and expression of osteogenic, matrix-related, osteoclastogenic and inflammatory genes was analyzed by quantitative PCR.Gene expression analysis revealed no overall effects of PBM on osteogenic differentiation. However, a statistically significant reduction was observed in the transcripts of COL1A1 and MMP13, two important genes involved in the bone matrix homeostasis. Most important, PBM significantly downregulated the expression of RANKL, IL6 and IL1B, three genes that are involved in both osteoclastogenesis and inflammation.In conclusion, PBM with a red/NIR laser did not modulate the osteogenic phenotype of mandibular osteoprogenitors but markedly reduced their expression of matrix-related genes and their pro-osteoclastogenic and pro-inflammatory profile.

Biomaterials and biopharmaceuticals for correcting large bone defects are a potential area of translational science. A new bioproduct, purified from snake venom and fibrinogen from buffalo blood, aroused interest in the repair of venous ulcers. Expanding potential uses, it has also been used to form biocomplexes in combination with bone grafts, associated with physical therapies or used alone. The aim of this preclinical study was to evaluate low-level laser photobiomodulation (PBM) in critical defects in the calvaria of rats filled with nanohydroxyapatite (NH) associated with the heterologous fibrin biopolymer (HFB). Sixty animals were used, divided into six groups (n = 10 each): G1 (NH); G2 (HFB); G3 (NH + HFB); G4 (NH + PBM); G5 (HFB + PBM); G6 (NH + HFB + PBM). PBM simultaneously used red (R) and infrared (IR) light emission, applied intraoperatively and twice a week, until the end of the experiment at 42 days. Microtomography, bone formation can be seen initially at the margins of the defect, more evident in G5. Microscopically, bone formation demonstrated immature and disorganized trabeculation at 14 days, with remnants of grafting materials. At 42 days, the percentage of new bone formed was higher in all groups, especially in G5 (HFB, 45.4 ± 3.82), with collagen fibers at a higher degree of maturation and yellowish-green color in the birefringence analysis with Picrosirius-red. Therefore, it is concluded that the HFB + PBM combination showed greater effectiveness in the repair process and presents potential for future clinical studies.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) is one of the most important side effects of orthodontic treatment. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a useful way to reduce the orthodontic treatment duration and may have some effect on preventing and repairing OIIRR. However, the specific effects of LLLT on OIIRR remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: Our research aimed to evaluate the Dentin Sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) expression level and root resorption volume during treatment and retention to explore the role of LLLT in preventing and repairing OIIRR. METHODS: Thirty-seven 6-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were selected to establish an OIIRR model; the rats were divided into Group B (blank), Group F (force), Group F(LLLT) (force and LLLT), Group F+R (force and retention) and Group F+R(LLLT) (force, retention and LLLT). The root resorption volume of the distal buccal root and mesial root in the maxillary left first molar was calculated by micro-CT, and the DSPP expression level on the compression side of the periodontal ligament was analysed by immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: The resorption volume in Group F was greater than that in Group F(LLLT). For the mesial root, the volume in Group F was greater than that in Groups F+R and F+R(LLLT). For the distal buccal root, the volume in Groups F and F+R was greater than that in Group F+R(LLLT). The DSPP level in Group F(LLLT) was greater than that in Group F and there was no difference between Groups F+R and F+R(LLLT). CONCLUSIONS: LLLT has a certain preventive effect and a limited reparative effect on OIIRR in rats.

Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) is the second most common entrapment neuropathy and presents with symptoms such as pain, paresthesia, and weakness in the elbow. Provocative tests and electrophysiological examinations are helpful in the diagnosis of UNE. Low-level laser therapy is one of the conservative treatments of UNE however, limited results were reported on the effectiveness of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in the treatment of UNE. In our study, we aimed to the efficacy of LLLT in reducing symptoms and providing clinical and electrophysiological improvement in patients with UNE. This study with a randomized-sham controlled, and double-blind design included 68 patients aged 18-60 years who were diagnosed with UNE. LLLT was applied to the first group, and sham laser was applied to the second group. The VAS pain, paresthesia, and weakness scores, grip strength, and provocative test positivity were evaluated in clinical examination. The QuickDASH questionnaire was administered to assess functional status. Electrophysiologically, motor distal latency (MDL) differences, sensory distal latency (SDL), motor and sensory nerve conduction velocity (NCV) were examined. Evaluations were performed before treatment and on the 15th day and at the third month after treatment. The LLLT group showed improvement in symptoms, clinical findings, motor NCV, and MDL at both post-treatment evaluations and sensory NCV on the post-treatment 15th day (p < 0.05). The comparison of post-treatment changes between the two groups revealed that the LLLT group had greater improvement in VAS day and night pain scores at both post-treatment evaluation times, QuickDASH scores at the third month, and sensory NCV on the 15th day (p < 0.05) compared to the SL group. There were no significant differences between the groups in terms of the post-treatment changes in VAS weakness scores, grip strength and electrophysiological findings (p > 0.05). It was observed that splinting alone was effective in UNE, but the addition of LLLT, one of the conservative treatment methods, enhanced treatment outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative endodontic pain (PEP) is crucial in clinical practice. Recently, the effects of various laser adjuvant therapies in endodontic treatments have been widely evaluated. However, as a virtually side-effect-free treatment, its effect on postoperative pain management during endodontic treatment remains controversial. OBJECTIVES: This review aimed to compare the efficacy of laser adjuvant therapy for pain management after endodontic treatment. METHOD: The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science databases were systematically searched for articles published until 12 February 2023. The risk of bias in the included studies was evaluated based on the Cochrane risk-of-bias assessment tool. Data on continuous outcomes of visual analogue scale pain scores are expressed as standard mean difference (SMD) and dichotomous outcomes of pain prevalence as relative risk (RR). RESULTS: We included 22 studies, of which 15 enrolled 892 patients with visual analogue scale pain scores and 7 enrolled 422 patients with pain prevalence. Of the 22 studies, seven studies had a low risk of bias, 10 had a moderate risk of bias and 5 had a high risk of bias. For pain level, the pooled outcomes indicated reduced pain scores in all laser adjuvant therapy, including low-level laser therapy (SMD = -0.86 [95% CI: -1.16, -0.55] in 24 h and SMD = -0.64 [95% CI: -0.84, -0.43] in 48 h), diode laser therapy (SMD = -0.27 [95% CI: -0.50, -0.04] in 48 h) and photodynamic therapy (SMD = -1.12 [95% CI: -2.18, -0.05] in 24 h). For postoperative pain incidence, a significant correlation was observed with reduced pain incidence rates in the photodynamic therapy group (pooled RR = 0.47 [95% CI: 0.31, 0.72]) but not in the low-level laser therapy group (RR = 0.89 [95% CI: 0.30, 2.70] at 12 h and RR = 0.57 [95% CI: 0.09, 3.72] at 24 h). CONCLUSIONS: High-quality evidence suggests that laser adjuvant therapies such as low-level laser therapy, diode laser therapy and photodynamic therapy have a positive impact on reducing postoperative endodontic pain intensity. However, the differences in PEP management effects between laser therapies are unknown, and no significant differences were observed among the subgroups. REGISTRATION: CRD 42023402872 (PROSPERO).

Purpose: This systematic review evaluates the relative effectiveness of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and microsurgery for neurosensory recovery following sustained iatrogenic injuries to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) and lingual nerve (LN) more than 6 months in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery procedures. Methods: Six articles were included. The mean age of microsurgery studies was 41.5 years and that of LLLT studies was 31.5 with female predominance in all studies. The majority of the included studies have been based on both subjective and objective assessments for neurosensory, two investigating microsurgery and four investigating LLLT following a Six-month post-IAN and LN injury. Results: Each modality demonstrated positive outcomes in both subjective and objective assessments of neurosensory function. Notably, LLLT exhibited efficacy even when employed beyond a six-month interval following the initial injury. Early intervention is generally recommended, particularly for microsurgical approaches. Conclusion: LLLT shows exciting promise as a minimally invasive approach for neurosensory rehabilitation even after six months of injury, while microsurgery studies revealed an improvement and the recommendation for early intervention post-nerve injury, the potential of LLLT and optimize its use for neurosensory rehabilitation, additional randomized controlled trials with larger sample sizes, longer follow-up periods, and blinding protocols are necessary.

BACKGROUND: To compare the efficacy of combined treatment of Er:YAG laser (ERL) and low-level laser therapy (LLLT) with single laser applications, and scaling and root planing (SRP) for non-surgical periodontal treatment. METHODS: In a randomized controlled trial, 25 non-smoking Stage II or Stage III periodontitis patients were recruited. The four intraoral quadrants were randomly assigned to four different treatments: (1) combined application with ERL plus SRP plus LLLT; (2) ERL plus SRP; (3) SRP plus LLLT; and (4) SRP. We assessed periodontal indexes, including probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding index (BI), and plaque index (PLI), along with three cytokines (IL-1ß, TNF-α, IL-10) from gingival crevicular fluid and red complex pathogens from subgingival dental plaque at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months. RESULTS: For initial moderate pockets (4 mm ≤ PD ≤ 6 mm), quadrants treated with ERL+SRP+LLLT, ERL+SRP, and SRP+LLLT exhibited greater PD improvement compared to the control (SRP) quadrants at the 3-month follow-up (1.25 ± 1.06, 1.23 ± 1.12, 1.00 ± 1.21 vs. 0.98 ± 1.21 mm) and the 6-month follow-up (1.35 ± 1.06, 1.23 ± 1.17, 1.35 ± 0.98 vs. 0.98 ± 1.23 mm) (p = 0.002). Quadrants treated with ERL+SRP+LLLT and SRP+LLLT showed more CAL gain means than the control quadrants at the 3-month follow-up (0.96 ± 1.42, 0.61 ± 1.39 vs. 0.55 ± 1.57 mm) and the 6-month follow-up (0.84 ± 1.54, 0.89 ± 1.49 vs. 0.48 ± 1.68 mm) (p = 0.008). For initial deep pockets (PD ≥ 7 mm), the ERL+SRP+LLLT quadrants had more PD improvement and CAL gain compared to the control quadrants at follow-up. There were no significant differences in BI, PLI, inflammatory cytokines, and periodontal pathogens among the four groups. CONCLUSION: The combined application of ERL and LLLT demonstrated potential efficacy in reducing PD, particularly for deep pockets. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: To compare the therapy effect of combined use of Er:YAG laser (ERL) and low level laser therapy (LLLT) with single laser applications, and traditional periodontal treatment (SRP). A total of 25 non smoking patients with periodontitis were involved, and their mouths were divided into four sections, each receiving a different treatment: ERL+SRP+LLLT, ERL+SRP, SRP+LLLT, and SRP. Clinical indexes and laboratory indicators were assessed at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months. After six months, for initial moderate pockets, combined laser group and single laser group showed better improvements than traditional group in reducing the depth of periodontal pockets and increasing attachment levels. But for initial deep pockets, only combined laser group showed better improvement than traditional group. There were no significant differences in bleeding, plaque, inflammation, or harmful bacterial levels among the groups. These findings suggest that the integration of Er:YAG laser and low level laser therapy into standard periodontal treatment may enhance the treatment's benefits in reducing pocket depth, especially for severe conditions.

Rationale: Mucormycosis is a rare, life-threatening, invasive fungal infection often referred to as black fungus. It has gained significant attention due to its increasing incidence during the coronavirus pandemic of 2019. Patient Concern: An 8-month-old child, whose identity is being withheld, arrived at our clinic with her parents with the chief complaint of swelling in the upper lip and cheek. Diagnosis: Various laboratory procedures, including blood cultures and imaging scans were performed to determine the presence of mucormycosis. Treatment: Under general anaesthesia, decortication and resection was done surgically, followed by an intraoral elastomeric impression made over the resected region. Soft silicone splints as oral seals for the suckling reflex were made postoperatively within a week. Immediate post-operative therapeutic low-level laser therapy was done. Outcome: Wound healing has been achieved. Take-away Lessons: Multidisciplinary intervention provides the best outcomes for the successful treatment and rehabilitation of paediatric patients with mucormycosis of the facial region.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral Facial Palsy (PFP) is a facial paralysis with various etiologies, including idiopathic causes (Bell's palsy), infections, trauma, and genetic factors. Traditional treatments involve antiviral medications, corticosteroids, and physiotherapy. However, new therapies, such as Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), are emerging with promising results. METHODS: This case series reports on two patients with PFP treated with LLLT combined with Vitamin B1, B6, and B12 supplementation. The first case involved a 52-year-old female with PFP due to a viral infection. The second case was a 33-year-old male who developed PFP following a traumatic brain injury. Both patients received LLLT sessions every two weeks, targeting 10 points along the facial nerve pathway from the facial notch across the face. The laser device used was the Theraphy EC (DMC, Sao Carlos, SP, Brazil), with each point receiving 4 Joules of energy applied perpendicular to the skin after cleaning the face with water and soap to remove lipids that could interfere. The administration of Vitamin B was done using NEUROBIONTA tablets (Vitamin B1 + Vitamin B6 + Vitamin B12; Procter & Gamble, Santiago, Chile) with one tablet taken daily for 30 days. RESULTS: After six to seven sessions, both patients showed significant improvement in facial muscle function and overall facial symmetry. In the first case, improvements were noted in muscle tonicity and facial movements, with the patient reporting reduced facial disfigurement. In the second case, notable recovery in facial mobility and symmetry was observed, with the patient experiencing decreased paresthesia and restored muscle functionality. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that LLLT, combined with Vitamin B1, B6, and B12 supplementation, may effectively improve facial muscle function and symmetry in PFP patients. The non-invasive nature and ease of application make LLLT a viable option for PFP treatment. Further studies with larger sample sizes and standardized protocols are necessary to confirm these results and establish LLLT as a standard treatment for PFP.

BACKGROUND: Low-level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has demonstrated its potential in promoting fiber matrix maturation, collagen synthesis, and fibroblast proliferation, contributing to tissue regeneration. Our study aimed to investigate the impact of LLLT on collagen type I synthesis, cell proliferation, and viability in human ligament fibroblasts derived from the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). METHODS: Tissue samples were obtained from individuals undergoing arthroscopic ACL reconstruction surgery. Primary human fibroblasts were isolated, and immunohistochemical assays confirmed their characteristics. LLLT at 850 nm was administered in three groups: Low dose (1.0 J/cm²), High dose (5.0 J/cm²), and Control (0.0 J/cm²). Cell viability was calculated using a membrane integrity assay, proliferation was determined by automated counting, and collagen type I concentration in cell culture was measured using an immunoassay. RESULTS: Fibroblasts showed decreased viability after low and high doses of LLLT, increased proliferation at the low dose, and increased collagen synthesis at the high dose on day 10 for both sexes after treatment. CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that LLLT may improve the early ligament healing process by increasing cell proliferation at the low dose and enhancing collagen type I synthesis at the high dose in human ligament fibroblasts.

To study the efficacy of low-level laser therapy in the management of temporomandibular joint arthralgia. Design Interventional study (pre-post study), Setting Meenakshi Medical College And Hospital, Research Institute. Subjects 50 patients with temporomandibular joint arthralgia were evaluated for pain, mouth opening and clicking sound while mouth opening before and after treatment. Method Patients are subjected to undergo low-level laser therapy with Infrared and red rays with a therapeutic dosage ranging from 8 J/cm2 to 15 J/cm2 up to 3-5 sessions for a month each session lasts for 15-20 min. The patients are to be followed up regularly after 1, 3, 6 and 8 months in the study.The study measured the range of mouth opening in patients before and after undergoing low-level laser therapy. Before treatment, the range of mouth opening was from 2.78 to 3.97 cm, with a mean value of 2.78 cm and a standard deviation of 0.22. After treatment, the range of mouth opening was from 2.78 to 3.97 cm, with a mean value of 3.97 cm and a standard deviation of 0.24. The study also measured the VAS score for pain, with a mean and standard deviation of 7.9 ± 0.73 before treatment and 0.88 ± 0.718 after treatment. There was a significant difference between the pretreatment and post-treatment VAS scores, with a P-value of 0.05. Low-level laser therapy is an effective non invasive treatment modality for temporomandibular joint arthralgia. The patients who underwent this procedure had symptomatic relief and no remissions were observed.

Around 7% of the male population in the world are entangle with considerable situation which is known as male infertility. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) is the application of low-level laser radiation, that recently used to increase or promote the various cell functions including, proliferation, differentiation, ATP production, gene expressions, regulation of reactive oxygen spices (ROS), and also boost the tissue healing and reduction of inflammation. This systematic review's main idea is a comprehensive appraisal of the literatures on subjects of PBMT consequences in four light ranges wavelength (blue, green, red, near-infrared (NIR)) on sperm cell characteristics, in vitro and in vivo. In this study, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases were used for abstracts and full-text scientific papers published from 2003-2023 that reported the application of PBM on sperm cells. Criteria's for inclusion and exclusion to review were applied. Finally, the studies that matched with our goals were included, classified, and reported in detail. Also, searched studies were subdivided into the effects of four ranges of light irradiation, including the blue light range (400-500 nm), green light range (500-600 nm), red light range (600-780 nm), and NIR light range (780-3000 nm) of laser irradiation on human or animal sperm cells, in situations of in vitro or in vivo. Searches with our keywords results in 137 papers. After primary analysis, some articles were excluded because they were review articles or incomplete and unrelated studies. Finally, we use the 63 articles for this systematic review. Our category tables were based on the light range of irradiation, source of sperm cells (human or animal cells) and being in vitro or in vivo. Six% of publications reported the effects of blue, 10% green, 53% red and 31% NIR, light on sperm cell. In general, most of these studies showed that PBMT exerted a positive effect on the sperm cell motility. The various effects of PBMT in different wavelength ranges, as mentioned in this review, provide more insights for its potential applications in improving sperm characteristics. PBMT as a treatment method has significant effectiveness for treatment of different medical problems. Due to the lack of reporting data in this field, there is a need for future studies to assessment the biochemical and molecular effects of PBMT on sperm cells for the possible application of this treatment to the human sperm cells before the ART process.

The under-eye region is an area of significant cosmetic concern. Photobiomodulation (PBM) has emerged as an effective, safe, inexpensive, and convenient treatment for skin rejuvenation. Herein, we aim to evaluate the safety and efficacy of a LED under-eye device for under-eye rejuvenation, as measured by objective and patient reported outcomes. Eleven participants self-administered treatment using a commercially available LED device emitting red (633 nm) and near infrared (830 nm) light for six weeks. Standardized photographs and questionnaires were administered at baseline and six weeks. Photographic digital analysis indicated an improvement in under-eye wrinkles at six weeks compared to baseline, with a reduction in wrinkle score from 20.05 to 19.72. However, this finding was not statistically significant. Participants self-reported consistent improvements in under-eye wrinkles, texture, dark circles, bags, pigmentation, and erythema. All participants reported a high degree of comfortability, ease of use, and satisfaction with the eye device. The participants noted no moderate or severe adverse events and few reports of transient expected outcomes such as mild erythema. The participants' self-reported improvements and high user satisfaction, and the device's favorable safety profile, highlights the benefits of at-home LED devices for under-eye rejuvenation. Future randomized controlled trials with larger sample sizes could further establish the safety and efficacy of at-home LED under-eye treatments.

Background: Although low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is a widely used noninvasive treatment because of photobiomodulation effects, its application for xerostomia remained uncertain. Tight junctions (TJs), mainly composed of claudins, occludin, and ZO family members, are crucial structures that determine material transport through paracellular pathway in salivary gland epithelial cells. This work aimed to investigate whether LLLT affected salivary secretion through epithelial TJs. Methods: Transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) measurement and paracellular permeability assay were applied to evaluate paracellular permeability in submandibular gland (SMG)-C6 cells after irradiation with 540 nm green light. Immunofluorescence and western blot were used to detect the expression of TJ proteins. Quantitative phosphoproteomics were performed to explore possible intracellular signals. Results: We found that irradiation with 540 nm green light significantly decreased TER values while increased paracellular transport in SMG-C6 cells. 540 nm green light-induced redistribution of claudin-1, -3, and -4, but not occludin or ZO-1. Moreover, above phenomena were abolished by preincubation with capsazepine, an antagonist of transient receptor potential vanilloid subtype 1. Notably, irradiation with 540 nm green light on the skin covering the whole submandibular gland regions promoted salivary secretion and attenuated lymphocytic infiltration in 21-week-old non-obese diabetic mice (n = 5 per group), a xerostomia animal model for Sjögren's syndrome. Through in-depth bioinformatics analysis and expression verification, ERK1/2 and EphA2 served as potential canonical and noncanonical signals underlying 540 nm green light. Conclusions: Our findings uncovered the novel therapeutic effects of 540 nm green light on xerostomia through regulation on the expression and distribution of TJs.

Dental implants are becoming a necessary component of the dental profession. The first bone resorption at the implant surface has an impact on implant success. Bone alterations surrounding the implant are a significant factor in determining the implant's effectiveness. Reducing the loss of peri-implant crestal bone has been a constant goal. In dental implantology, several procedures are carried out to improve implant stability and the healing of the bone. The ability of photobiomodulation techniques or low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to speed up osseointegration by inducing cellular metabolism and stimulating tissue healing has made them popular. This case study details the implant loading in a patient treated with photobiomodulation to achieve implant stability and who has compromised bone type or D4.
