RESUMO

This study focuses on developing copper oxide-based nanocomposites using plant extracts for photocatalytic applications. Curcuma amada leaf and Alysicarpus vaginalis leaf extracts were utilized alongside recycled copper precursors to synthesize photocatalysts via a green synthesis approach. Structural characterization through X-ray diffraction confirmed the formation of monoclinic CuO with reduced crystallite sizes due to plant extract incorporation. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy identified additional functional groups from the plant extracts, enhancing the material's properties. UV-Vis spectroscopy demonstrated increased light absorption and narrowed bandgaps in the nanocomposites, crucial for efficient photocatalysis under visible light. Morphological studies using FESEM revealed unique leaf-like structures in nanocomposites, indicative of the plant extract's influence on morphology. Photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue, rhodamine B, Congo red, and reactive blue 171 dyes showed enhanced performance of plant extract-modified CuO compared to without plant extract mediated CuO, attributed to improved charge carrier separation and extended lifetime. The effects of pH, catalyst dosage, and dye concentration on degradation efficiency were systematically investigated, highlighting optimal conditions for each dye type. Radical scavenger studies confirmed the roles of holes and hydroxyl radicals in the degradation process. Kinetic analysis revealed pseudo-second-order kinetics for dye degradation, underscoring the effectiveness of the nanocomposites. Overall, this research provides insights into sustainable photocatalytic materials using plant extracts and recycled copper, showcasing their potential for environmental remediation applications.

RESUMO

This work designed and prepared an organic-inorganic nanocomposite using layered double hydroxide (LDH) inorganic substrate and trimesic acid (TMA) as chelating agent. Subsequently, the synthesized organic-inorganic nanocomposite was assessed using multiple identification methods, including FTIR, EDX, XRD, TGA, and FESEM, and the outcomes demonstrated that the intended structure was successfully prepared. Also, in order to investigate the efficiency of the Mg-Al LDH-TMA nanocomposite as an efficient nano adsorbent, it was used for removal of indigo carmine (IC) and methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. This synthetic nanocomposite showed a high adsorption capacity. The efficiency of the produced nanocomposite in the adsorption of selected dyes was investigated with the help of batch adsorption studies performed in a variety of experimental settings, including dye concentration, adsorbent dose, pH, adsorption temperature and contact time. Furthermore, the produced Mg-Al LDH-TMA nanocomposite exhibits strong stability and can be recycled and reused five times in a row, which is well consistent with the principles of green chemistry.

RESUMO

Widespread ecosystem degradation from noxious substances like industrial waste, toxic dyes, pesticides, and herbicides poses serious environmental risks. For remediation of these hazardous problems, present study introduces an innovative Cu-doped Ce2Zr2O7 nano-photocatalyst, fabricated via a simple, eco-friendly hydrothermal method, designed to degrade toxic textile dye methylene blue. Harnessing Cu doping for pyrochlore Ce2Zr2O7, structure engineering carried out through a hydrothermal synthesis method to achieve superior photocatalytic performance, addressing limitations of rapid charge carrier recombination in existing photocatalysts. Photoluminescence analysis showed that doped pyrochlore slows charge carrier recombination, boosting dye degradation efficiency. UV-Visible analysis demonstrated an impressive 96 % degradation of methylene blue by Cu-doped Ce2Zr2O7 within 50 min, far exceeding the performance of pristine materials. Trapping experiments clarified the charge transfer mechanism, deepening our understanding of the photocatalytic process. These findings highlight the potential for developing innovative, highly efficient photocatalysts for environmental remediation, offering sustainable solutions to combat pollution. This study not only addresses the limitations of existing photocatalysts but also opens new avenues for enhancing photocatalytic performance through strategic material design.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The common cause of sodium nitrite poisoning has shifted from previous accidental intoxication by exposure or ingestion of contaminated water and food to recent alarming intentional intoxication as an employed method of suicide/exit. The subsequent formation of methemoglobin (MetHb) restricts oxygen transport and utilization in the body, resulting in functional hypoxia at the tissue level. In clinical practice, a mismatch of cyanotic appearance and oxygen partial pressure usually contributes to the identification of methemoglobinemia. Prompt recognition of characteristic mismatch and accurate diagnosis of sodium nitrite poisoning are prerequisites for the implementation of standardized systemic interventions. CASE SUMMARY: A pregnant woman was admitted to the Department of Critical Care Medicine at the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University due to consciousness disorders and drowsiness 2 h before admission. Subsequently, she developed vomiting and cyanotic skin. The woman underwent orotracheal intubation, invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), and correction of internal environment disturbance in the ICU. Her premature infant was born with a higher-than-normal MetHb level of 3.3%, and received detoxification with methylene blue and vitamin C, supplemental vitamin K1, an infusion of fresh frozen plasma, as well as respiratory support via orotracheal intubation and IMV. On day 3 after admission, the puerpera regained consciousness, evacuated the IMV, and resumed enteral nutrition. She was then transferred to the maternity ward 24 h later. On day 7 after admission, the woman recovered and was discharged without any sequelae. CONCLUSION: MetHb can cross through the placental barrier. Level of MetHb both reflects severity of the sodium nitrite poisoning and serves as feedback on therapeutic effectiveness.

RESUMO

In the current arena, new-generation functional nanomaterials are the key players for smart solutions and applications including environmental decontamination of pollutants. Among the plethora of new-generation nanomaterials, graphene-based nanomaterials and nanocomposites are in the driving seat surpassing their counterparts due to their unique physicochemical characteristics and superior surface chemistry. The purpose of the present research was to synthesize and characterize magnetite iron oxide/reduced graphene oxide nanocomposites (FeNPs/rGO) via a green approach and test its application in the degradation of methylene blue. The modified Hummer's protocol was adopted to synthesize graphene oxide (GO) through a chemical exfoliation approach using a graphitic route. Leaf extract of Azadirachta indica was used as a green reducing agent to reduce GO into reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Then, using the green deposition approach and Azadirachta indica leaf extract, a nanocomposite comprising magnetite iron oxides and reduced graphene oxide i.e., FeNPs/rGO was synthesized. During the synthesis of functionalized FeNPs/rGO, Azadirachta indica leaf extract acted as a reducing, capping, and stabilizing agent. The final synthesized materials were characterized and analyzed using an array of techniques such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction analysis, and UV-visible spectrophotometry. The UV-visible spectrum was used to evaluate the optical characteristics and band gap. Using the FT-IR spectrum, functional groupings were identified in the synthesized graphene-based nanomaterials and nanocomposites. The morphology and elemental analysis of nanomaterials and nanocomposites synthesized via the green deposition process were investigated using SEM-EDX. The GO, rGO, FeNPs, and FeNPs/rGO showed maximum absorption at 232, 265, 395, and 405 nm, respectively. FTIR spectrum showed different functional groups (OH, COOH, C=O), C-O-C) modifying material surfaces. Based on Debye Sherrer's equation, the mean calculated particle size of all synthesized materials was < 100 nm (GO = 60-80, rGO = 90-95, FeNPs = 70-90, Fe/GO = 40-60, and Fe/rGO = 80-85 nm). Graphene-based nanomaterials displayed rough surfaces with clustered and spherical shapes and EDX analysis confirmed the presence of both iron and oxygen in all the nanocomposites. The final nanocomposites produced via the synthetic process degraded approximately 74% of methylene blue. Based on the results, it is plausible to conclude that synthesized FeNPs/rGO nanocomposites can also be used as a potential photocatalyst degrader for other different dye pollutants due to their lower band gap.

RESUMO

In the current scenario, the management of N0 neck in early-stage oral cancer is debatable, whether or not they should undergo elective neck dissection. Most of the time these patients are either over-treated or under-treated. Sentinel lymph node (SLN) biopsy is a good option to identify occult LN in this cohort of patients for guiding neck dissection. With a focus on SLN biopsy using methylene blue dye, this study aims to evaluate its feasibility and accuracy in node-negative oral squamous cell carcinoma. A prospective observational study was conducted involving operable squamous cell carcinoma patients with clinically and radiologically node-negative neck. Methylene blue was injected in the peritumoral area and after that SLN was identified and then neck dissection was completed. Of 47 patients, SLN was identified in 82.98%, with 53.85% having more than two SLN. Common locations were in levels IB, IA and IIA. Occult metastasis was observed in 12.82% of cases, predominantly in T2 patients. Sensitivity, specificity and NPV were 50%, 100% and 88.89% respectively. The study affirms the feasibility and accuracy of methylene blue-assisted SLN biopsy in oral cancer. Despite a high detection rate, methylene blue dye alone should not be used for SLN identification in oral cavity cancer. However, it can be used as an adjunct of lymphoscintigraphy to increase the yield of the procedure. Multi-institutional trials with larger cohorts may provide valuable insights and more information for comprehensively addressing the limitations of this technique and its broader applicability in decision-making, particularly in resource-constrained countries like India where lymphoscintigraphy is not readily accessible.

RESUMO

Introduction With the use of advanced instruments and techniques, the reported incidence of bile duct injury is low; however, the actual frequency might be slightly higher than reported. Most surgeons might encounter bile duct injury or bile duct-related complications in their early training days. Nevertheless, with newer techniques and technologies, cases of bile duct injuries have been mostly observed in open cholecystectomy. The predominant cause of injury is the misinterpretation of the anatomy of the bile duct, cystic duct, or aberrant right sectoral hepatic duct. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is currently the gold standard of therapy for cholecystitis. Materials and methods The study was conducted in the Department of General Surgery at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences in Patna, after obtaining clearance from the ethics committee. The duration of the study was one year. Results A total of 50 patients were enrolled in the study, whose ages ranged from 20 to 55 years. They were predominantly female. The mean operative time was 68.5 ± 8.7 minutes. There were no cases of conversion to an open procedure, bile duct injury, or biliary stricture. Conclusion The injection of methylene blue into the gallbladder fundus during laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a practical, affordable, and simple procedure that does not require any special equipment or radiation exposure for the improved delineation of the gallbladder and biliary system. The use of intraoperative methylene blue could be a low-cost and simple alternative for safe laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

RESUMO

Naphthalene is a major component of mothballs. Domestically, people use mothballs as an insect repellent. Its deliberate or accidental ingestion leading to toxicity has rarely been reported in the medical literature, despite its widespread use in Southeast Asia. Naphthalene, or mothball poisoning, is a rare but serious condition that can have detrimental effects on human health. This case report presents the clinical course of a 22-year-old male who ingested six naphthalene balls, resulting in severe symptoms including fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, jaundice, and dark-colored urine. Laboratory investigations were suggestive of acute intravascular hemolysis and methemoglobinemia. The patient was promptly admitted to the hospital, where he received supportive care along with specific treatment in the form of red blood cell transfusions, intravenous methylene blue, ascorbic acid, and N-acetyl cysteine. Through this report, the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of naphthalene poisoning and the specific treatment options available is highlighted.

RESUMO

In this study, four adsorbents were developed: layered silicate magadiite material (mag), Hexadecyltrimethylammonium intercalated magadiite (HDTMA@mag), a cross-linked composite of sodium alginate and magadiite (ALG@mag) and a cross-linked composite of sodium alginate and HDTMA@magadiite (ALG@HDTMA@mag). The adsorbents were evaluated for their effectiveness in removing of Methylene Blue (MB) and Eriochrome Black T (EBT) dyes. The prepared adsorbents were characterized using SEM, XRD, FTIR, and zeta potential measurements. Kinetic modeling results indicated that both film diffusion and intraparticle diffusion are useful as rate-determining processes in adsorption for all adsorbents. For both dyes, the Langmuir isotherm model provided a good correlation with the adsorption equilibrium data. ANOVA analysis for the best adsorbent (ALG@HDTMA@mag beads) revealed that MB removal was significantly influenced by the positive individual effects of contact time and ALG@HDTMA@mag dose. However, the individual effect of MB concentration exhibited an antagonistic effect throughout the adsorption process. The optimal parameters for achieving an adsorption capacity of 118.54 mg/g were a dye concentration of 60 ppm, a contact period of 1800 min, and an ALG@HDTMA@mag dose of 50 mg.

RESUMO

Activated carbon (AC) is a porous, amorphous form of carbon known for its strong adsorption capacity, making it highly effective for use in wastewater treatment. In this investigation, AC-based nanocomposites (NCs) loaded with zirconium dioxide and cerium dioxide nanoparticles (ZrO2/CeO2 NPs) were successfully synthesized for the effective elimination of methylene blue (MB) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The AC-ZrO2/CeO2 NCs have a size of 231.83 nm, a zeta potential of -20.07 mV, and a PDI value of 0.160. The adsorption capacities of AC-ZrO2/CeO2 NCs for MB and TCH were proved in agreement with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo 1st order kinetic model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacities were determined to be 75.54 mg/g for MB and 26.75 mg/g for TCH. Notably, AC-ZrO2/CeO2 NCs exhibited superior photocatalytic degradation efficiency for MB and TCH under sunlight irradiation with removal efficiencies reaching up to 97.91% and 82.40% within 90 min, respectively. The t1/2 for the photo-degradation process of MB and TCH were 11.55 min and 44.37 min. Analysis of active species trapping confirmed the involvement of hole (h+), superoxide anion (•O2-), and hydroxyl radical (•OH) in the degradation mechanism. Furthermore, the residual solution post-contaminant removal exhibited minimal toxicity towards Artemia salina and NIH3T3 cells. Importantly, the NCs did not exhibit antibacterial activity against tested pathogens post-absorption/degradation of TCH. Thus, AC-ZrO2/CeO2 NCs could be a promising nanomaterial for wastewater treatment applications.

RESUMO

The work was aimed at evaluating the adsorptive properties of waste newspaper (WN) activated carbons chemically produced using sodium salts for methylene blue (MB) and congo red (CR) removal. The activated carbons, designated as AC1, AC2, AC3 and AC4 were prepared through impregnation with NaH2PO4, Na2CO3, NaCl and NaOH, respectively and activation at 500 °C for 1 h. The activated carbons were characterized for surface chemistry, thermal stability, specific area, morphology and composition. The AC1 with a surface area of 917 m2/g exhibits a greater MB capacity of 651 mg/g. Meanwhile, a greater CR capacity was recorded by AC2 at 299 mg/g. The pseudo-second order model fitted well with the kinetic data, while the equilibrium data could be described by Langmuir model. The thermodynamic parameters, i.e.., positive ΔH°, negative ΔG° and positive ΔS° suggest that the adsorption of dyes is endothermic, spontaneous and feasible at high solution temperature. To conclude, WN is a potential cellulose source for producing activated carbon, while NaH2PO4 activation could be employed to convert WN into activated carbon for effective dye wastewater treatment.

RESUMO

The study presents Ag2CrO4/Fe2O3/CeO2 ternary nanocomposite, based on Fe2O3/CeO2 binary composites, which demonstrated excellent photocatalytic performance in the photodegradation of methylene blue under solar irradiation. The Ag2CrO4/Fe2O3/CeO2 nanocomposites was orthorhombic, ilmenite, and cubic-fluorite phases of Ag2CrO4, Fe2O3, and CeO2, respectively, according to the XRD examination. A strong bond between Ag2CrO4, Fe2O3, and CeO2 within the nanocomposite was demonstrated by the SEM and TEM investigations. Moreover, it was discovered that the coupling of Ag2CrO4 and Fe2O3 caused a red shift and moved CeO2 absorption edge from the UV to the visible spectrum. The reason behind this is that the band gap of CeO2 reduced 2.85 to 2.69 eV and the absorbance band intensity increased in visible region. Utilizing visible light, Ag2CrO4/Fe2O3/CeO2 ternary nanocomposites exhibit enhanced photocatalytic properties (98.90%) for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) within 100 min. The long-term reliability and recyclability of the photocatalyst were explored through 3 successive cycles. An active radical quenching test was conducted to elucidate the involvement of O2 - and OH which are the primary reactive species in the photocatalytic breakdown of MB. Ag2CrO4/Fe2O3/CeO2 ternary nanocomposites displayed notable improvements in photodegradation activity, making them well suited for the effective removal of hazardous dyes present in textile effluents.

RESUMO

Objectives: Iatrogenic ureteral injury is a severe surgical complication, with a highest incidence of 1.5% in gynecological surgeries. The purpose of this report is to document our initial experience with using methylene blue (MB) to label the ureter in gynecological laparoscopic surgeries and to explore its effectiveness and safety. This is also a novel description of simultaneously visualizing ureteral MB fluorescence and sentinel lymph nodes (SLN's) Indocyanine Green (ICG) fluorescence using the same camera. Methods: This study included patients undergoing gynecological laparoscopic surgeries, with the same surgeon performing all cases. During the early stages of each surgery, rapid intravenous infusion of MB was administered. For cases requiring SLN imaging, we also injected ICG solution into the cervix. Assessment of the included cases was conducted both intraoperatively and postoperatively. The group that had MB fluorescence (Group A) was compared to a control group that did not have it (Group B). Results: A total of 25 patients (Group A) received MB during surgery, demonstrating 45 ureters clearly, with an imaging success rate of 90%. Continuous and clearer fluorescence imaging was achieved in cases with ureteral hydronephrosis. In most patients, ureteral fluorescence was visible 15-20 min after intravenous infusion of MB, and 64% still exhibited fluorescence at the end of the surgery. In patients who had both ICG and MB, dual fluorescence imaging was achieved clearly. Among the included cases, there were no iatrogenic ureteral injuries (0%), which we observed to be lower than in patients who did not receive MB (1.3%). The rate of adverse events was similar in both groups. Conclusion: Using MB fluorescence is an effective and safe method of visualizing the ureters during gynecological surgeries, and can diminish iatrogenic ureteral injury without increased associated adverse events. It therefore may offer promising prospects for clinical application.

RESUMO

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a highly precise and non-invasive analytical method known for its ability to detect vibrational signatures of minute analytes with exceptional sensitivity. However, the efficacy of SERS is subject to substrate properties, and current methodologies face challenges in attaining consistent, replicable, and stable substrates to regulate plasma hot spots across a wide spectral range. This study introduces a straightforward and economical approach that incorporates monodispersed silver nanoparticles onto 2-D porous magnesium oxide nanosheets (Ag@MgO-NSs) through an in-situ process. The resulting nanocomposite, Ag@MgO-NSs, demonstrates substantial SERS enhancement owing to its distinctive plasmonic resonance. The effectiveness of this nanocomposite is exemplified by depositing diverse environmental pollutants as analytes, such as antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP), organic dyes like rhodamine 6G (R6G) and methylene blue (MB), and nitrogen-rich pollutant like melamine (MLN), onto the proposed substrate. The proposed nanocomposite features a 2-D porous structure, resulting in a larger surface area and consequently providing numerous adsorption sites for analytes. Moreover, engineering the active sites of the nanocomposite results in a higher number of hotspots, leading to an enhanced performance. The nanocomposite outperforms, exhibiting superior detection capabilities for R6G, MB, and MLN at concentrations of 10-6 M and CIP at concentration of 10-5 M, with impressive uniformity, reproducibility, stability, and analytical enhancement factors (EF) of 6.3 x 104, 2 x 104, 2.73 x 104 and 1.8 x 104 respectively. This approach provides a direct and cost-effective method for the detection of a broad spectrum of environmental pollutants and food additives, presenting potential applications across diverse domains. The detected environmental pollutants and food additives are removed through both catalytic degradation (R6G and MB) and adsorption (CIP and MLN).

RESUMO

Dyes are one of the common contaminants in industrial wastewater. Adsorption is the most widely method which used to treat dye-contaminated water due to their easy use, cost-effectiveness, and their efficiency was high. The aim of this study is the investigating of the utilization of the activated carbon which prepared from Raphanus seeds solid residual (ACRS) as a low cost adsorbent for removing of cationic Methylene Blue dye (MB)from wastewater. measuring the surface area using BET methods and SEM. The FT‒IR and XRD was measured. Different variables (e.g.: initial concentration of the dye, pH, contact time, and dosage) have been studied. Process has been systematically investigated experimentally at (25 ± 1 °C). The % removal of MB reached 99.4% after 90-min MB adsorption (40 mg/L) was observed within 5 min of contact time for the Raphanus seeds solid residual (ACRS) dosage of 4 g/L. MB initial concentration (10 ppm) Raphanus seeds solid residual (ACRS) effectively adsorbed MB (> 99%) over a widely range of pH (from pH 2 to pH 8). However, a swift decline in removal was observed when the pH was set at 7. The results of the adsorption kinetics analysis indicate a strong correlation with the pseudo-second-order model, as evidenced by the high regression coefficients. However, the adsorption capacity diminished with a rise in temperature. Thermodynamic calculations of (MB) onto Raphanus seeds solid residual (ACRS) is an exothermic reaction. The results have been indicated that the effectiveness of MB removal by activated carbon prepared from Raphanus seeds solid residual is favorable under neutral conditions, Raphanus seeds solid residual (ACRS) can be considered an efficient, environmentally friendly, readily available, and economical adsorbent that could treat industrial wastewater contaminated with cationic textile dyes. The objective of the experiments was to investigate the impact of various factors on the response of a process or formulation. To accomplish this goal, response surface methodology (RSM) has employed as a statistical model. RSM is an efficient and effective method for optimizing processes through the use of a quadratic polynomial model. The utilization of RSM allows for a reduction in the number of experiments needed, thus minimizing the associated costs of extensive analysis. This method has been done using Box-Behnken Design (BBD) to optimize % removal of MB. The optimal conditions as obtained from the RSM is pH 7,contact time 120 min, initial concentration 10 ppm, ACRS dosage 1 g, adsorption temperature 45 °C.

RESUMO

A signal amplification electrochemical biosensor chip was developed to integrate loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) based on in situ nucleic acid amplification and methyl blue (MB) serving as the hybridization redox indicator for sensitive and selective foodborne pathogen detection without a washing step. The electrochemical biosensor chip was designed by a screen-printed carbon electrode modified with gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) and covered with polydimethylsiloxane membrane to form a microcell. The primers of the target were immobilized on the Au NPs by covalent attachment for in situ amplification. The electroactive MB was used as the electrochemical signal reporter and embedded into the double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) amplicons generated by LAMP. Differential pulse voltammetry was introduced to survey the dsDNA hybridization with MB, which differentiates the specifically electrode-unbound and -bound labels without a washing step. Pyrene as the back-filling agent can further improve response signaling by reducing non-specific adsorption. This method is operationally simple, specific, and effective. The biosensor showed a detection linear range of 102-107 CFU mL-1 with the limit of detection of 17.7 CFU mL-1 within 40 min. This method showed promise for on-site testing of foodborne pathogens and could be integrated into an all-in-one device.

RESUMO

The activated carbon was produced in the first phase of this investigation by chemically activating hazelnut shell waste with H3PO4. Composite materials were obtained by coating the activated carbon with zinc oxide, whose BET surface area was calculated as 1278 m2 g-1. ZnO-doped ZnO/AC composite was synthesized as an adsorbent for its possible application in the elimination of organic dyestuff MB, and its removal efficiency was investigated. Morphological properties of ZnO/AC were characterized using analytical methods such as XRD, SEM, and BET. The adsorption system and its parameters were investigated and modeled using the response surface method of batch adsorption experiments. The experimental design consisted of three levels of pH (3, 6.5, and 10), initial MB concentration (50, 100, and 150 mg L-1), dosage (0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 g 100 mL-1), and contact time (5, 50, and 95 min). The results from the RSM suggested that the MB removal efficiency was 98.7% under the optimum conditions of the experimental factors. The R2 value, which expresses the significance of the model, was determined as 99.05%. Adsorption studies showed that the equilibrium data fit well with the Langmuir isotherm model compared to Freundlich. The maximum adsorption capacity was calculated as 270.70 mg g-1.

RESUMO

Visible-light-driven photocatalysis using layered materials has garnered increasing attention regarding the degradation of organic dyes. Herein, transition-metal dichalcogenides MoS2 and WS2 prepared by chemical vapor deposition as well as their intermixing are evaluated for photodegradation (PD) of methylene blue under solar simulator irradiation. Our findings revealed that WS2 exhibited the highest PD efficiency of 67.6% and achieved an impressive PD rate constant of 6.1 × 10-3 min-1. Conversely, MoS2 displayed a somewhat lower PD performance of 43.5% but demonstrated remarkable stability. The intriguing result of this study relies on the synergetic effect observed when both MoS2 and WS2 are combined in a ratio of 20% of MoS2 and 80% of WS2. This precise blend resulted in an optimized PD efficiency and exceptional stability reaching 97% upon several cycles. This finding underscores the advantageous outcomes of intermixing WS2 and MoS2, shedding light on the development of an efficient and enduring photocatalyst for visible-light-driven photodegradation of methylene blue.

RESUMO

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) standing as the most prevalent form of arthritis, closely associates with heightened levels of reactive oxygen species, particularly hypochlorous acid (HOCl). Although there are numerous probes available for detecting HOCl in the OA region, probes with dual functions of diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities are still significantly lacking. While this type of probe can reduce the time gap between diagnosis and treatment, which is clinically needed. Methods: We developed a fluorescent probe (DHU-CBA1) toward HOCl with theranostics functions through the release of methylene blue (MB) and ibuprofen (IBP) in this work. DHU-CBA1 can detect HOCl with high specificity and sensitivity, releasing MB and IBP with an impressive efficiency of ≥ 95% in vitro. Results: DHU-CBA1 exhibits good biosafety, enabling in vivo imaging of endogenous HOCl, along with reducing arthritis scores, improving synovitis and cartilage damage, and maintaining catabolic balance while alleviating senescence in cartilage. Conclusions: This study proposes a novel approach to enhance osteoarthritis therapy by releasing IBP via a smart HOCl-enabled fluorescent probe.

RESUMO

Novel (N-arylamino)phenothiazinium dyes containing meta-substituted-arylamine auxochrome units were successfully obtained by applying a sonochemical protocol designed for a more efficient energy usage in the preparation of methylene blue (MB) analogues. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the spatial arrangement in aggregated crystalline state of (N-(meta-bromoaryl)amino)phenothiazinium dye with minor variances induced by the nature of the halogenide counterion (iodide or chloride). The optical UV-vis properties of the novel (N-arylamino)phenothiazinium dyes were comparable to those of the parent MB, with the longest wavelength absorption maxima situated in the visible range (640-680 nm), large molar extinction coefficients (log ε = 4.5-5.1) and weak solvatochromism in polar solvents. Their fluorescence emission in solid state was evidenced by One Photon Excited Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (OPE-FLIM) and Two Photon Excited Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging (TPE-FLIM) experiments. Theoretical calculations based on Time Dependent-Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) at B3PW91 and CAM-B3LYP/def2-SV(P) level of theory predicted absorption and fluorescence emission wavelength maxima in reasonable agreement with experimental data. Computational results suggest that the electronic excitations imply a departure from the planar molecular ground state towards geometrically rearranged excited states disfavoring the vibronic couplings due to a high degree of flexibility induced by the conformational motion of the N-arylamino auxochromes. Preliminary studies regarding the dyes' relevance in biological environment indicated lipophilicity (log P octanol/water 0.5-2.3), no aggregation tendency in diluted solutions in the concentration range 10-50 microM and ability for cytoplasmatic staining of D407 human retinal pigment epithelial cells.
