RESUMO

Understanding the responses of ecosystem service trade-offs and synergies in metropolitan areas to the multidimensional expansion of urban space is of great significance for the optimization of regional land spatial pattern and high-quality development. With the Guangfo Metropolitan Area as research region, we used land use data and natural ecological environment data from 2000 to 2020 to measure the expansion characteristics of urban space in the dimensions of scale, distribution, and morphology by using the landscape pattern indices. We further calculated four main ecosystem services: urban cooling, habitat quality, recreation, and water conservation by the InVEST model, quantified the trade-off and synergistic relationship of multiple ecosystem services by the coupling coordination degree model, and explored its response to multidimensional urban spatial expansion by using the multi-scale geographically weighted regression model. The results showed that urban land use scale in the Guangfo Metropolitan Area continued to increase from 2000 to 2020, with an accelerated growth rate from 2010 to 2020. The ave-rage patch area of urban land in the central area and the urban land of small patches in the northeast increased, evolving from a "dual-center" structure to a "single-center" one. The distance between urban land patches in the Guangfo Metropolitan Area was relatively small, indicating a compact distribution of urban land. The distance between newly developed urban land patches was also small, but had gradually increased in recent years. The patch shape of urban land was relatively regular and less complex, but the complexity of the newly added urban land gra-dually increased. The ecosystem service trade-offs and synergies in the Guangfo Metropolitan Area had undergone significant changes, with a decrease in synergies and an increase in trade-off, and extreme trade-offs had gradually become dominant. The response of ecosystem services synergies to changes in urban land use scale was the most intense and had spatial heterogeneity, while the response to the change of distribution and morphological characte-ristics of urban land showed periodic differences.

RESUMO

The management and design of urban areas in metropolises pose significant challenges. Balancing diverse land uses within a metropolitan structure and addressing spatial and environmental constraints are just some of these challenges. Urban heat islands, which stem from factors such as inappropriate construction materials, inadequate building insulation, improper land use locations, and unsuitable built-up density, reflect environmental imbalances within urban infrastructure. Effectively addressing these temperature discrepancies can lead to energy preservation, reduced environmental hazards, and enhanced comfort for urban residents. This study employed Landsat-8 satellite images to identify and monitor positive and convex temperature disparities across various districts of Tehran over 3 years (2018 to 2020) using three different strategies. These disparities are estimated through the differences in land surface temperature from the thermal trend of each district and their persistence has been assessed in seasonal, semi-annual, and annual strategies. The study found that industrial areas, including warehouses, were the significant contributors to the persistent presence of urban heat islands in summer and winter. Open areas with impervious surfaces or bare soil, particularly those lacking sufficient green cover, also significantly contributed to the heat island effect. Certain large shopping centers, often due to their air conditioning systems, were also consistently identified as persistent heat islands. Evaluations demonstrated that over 78.8% of the identified persistent heat islands were meaningful, with most located in the northern and western parts of Tehran.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Compound extreme weather events, a combination of weather and climate drivers that lead to potentially high-impact events, are becoming more frequent with climate change. The number of emergency ambulance calls (EACs) is expected to increase during compound extreme weather events. However, the extent of these increases and the trends over time have not been fully assessed. METHODS: We obtained 242,165 EAC records for Shenzhen from January 1, 2020, to June 30, 2023. A compound extreme weather event was defined as the occurrence of at least two extreme weather events on the same day. A distributed lag non-linear model was used to explore the exposure-response and lag-response relationships between various compound extreme weather events and all-cause and specific-cause EACs. FINDING: Compound Cold & Strong Monsoon events had more significant impacts on EACs for all causes and endocrine diseases, with the cumulative relative risk (CRR) of 1.401 (95% confidence interval (CI):1.290-1.522) and 1.641 (95% CI:1.279-2.105). Compound Heat Wave & Lightning events had more obvious impacts on digestive disease and endocrine disease EACs, with the CRRs of 1.185 (95% CI:1.041-1.348) and 1.278 (95% CI:0.954-1.711), respectively. Compound Rainstorm & Lightning & Heat Wave events also led to increased RRs of EACs for all causes (CRR: 1.168, 95% CI:1.012-1.348), cardiovascular diseases (CRR: 1.221, 95% CI:0.917-1.624), digestive diseases (CRR: 1.395, 95% CI:1.130-1.721), and endocrine diseases (CRR: 1.972, 95% CI:1.235-3.149). There was no increased RR in the compound Rainstorm & Lightning events for all types of EACs. INTERPRETATION: Our study explored the relationship between EACs and compound extreme weather events, suggesting that compound extreme weather events are associated with the acute onset of cardiovascular diseases, digestive diseases, and endocrine diseases, increasing the burden on emergency ambulance resources for both all causes and specific diseases mentioned above.

RESUMO

The incidence of diphtheria has been rising over the past decade, particularly in its cutaneous form. A clinical review of the case series was therefore required. We reviewed the epidemiological, clinical, microbiological and therapeutic data of cutaneous diphtheria cases, in adult patients living in metropolitan France with a skin sample positive for corynebacteria of the diphtheriae complex between 2018 and 2022. Of the 132 cases identified, 63 met the inclusion criteria. The mean age was 53.8 years, 68.3% were men and 56.7% had travelled outside mainland France. Immunization rate was 44%. Lesions involved the lower limbs (86.9%), corresponded to ulcerations in 82% of cases. Two species were identified in the study: C. diphtheriae (77%) and C. ulcerans (23%). 39% were toxigenic. Other bacteria were present in 88.9% of cases: Staphylococcus aureus (54.7%) and Streptococcus pyogenes (49.1%). 17.5% of clinicians ignored the presence of Corynebacteria of the diphtheriae species complex. Clinicians seem to be unfamiliar with this disease due to under-reporting and a lack of knowledge and awareness among clinicians, and rarely mention it, which explains the frequent failure to comply with French recommendations. Clinical data are consistent with the literature. Continued epidemiological surveillance, increased vaccination coverage in high-risk populations and better information of clinicians are essential to prevent and control this preventable disease.

RESUMO

(1) Background: The incidence rate of early onset-cancer (<50) has increased since 1995. Among younger people, cancers in AYAs (aged 15-39 y) are often biologically distinct tumors from those treated in the pediatric and older adult population. The current study describes trends in the United States for the most recent years including the first year of the COVID-19 epidemic. We aimed to describe the recent incidence and mortality trends of cancers in AYAs (aged 15-39 y). (2) Methods: We used data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER 22) from 1 January 2016 to 31 December 2021. Age-adjusted incidence and mortality rates were assessed by SEER*Stat 8.4.3 for major cancer types by sex, race/ethnicity, age, and metropolitan/nonmetropolitan status. Time trends of age-adjusted incidence and mortality rates were examined by sex and metropolitan/nonmetropolitan status. (3) Results: Age-adjusted overall cancer incidence and mortality rates were stable during this study period. The age-adjusted incidence rates declined significantly for ependymoma, melanoma, carcinomas of lung, bronchus, and trachea, unspecified malignant neoplasms, and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Significant increases were found for gastrointestinal tract cancers and non-Kaposi sarcomas. The age-adjusted mortality rate decreased for acute myeloid leukemia, melanoma, carcinomas of liver and intrahepatic bile ducts, kidney and, in women, leukemia. For some cancers, rates differed by sex, race, ethnicity, and geography. Monitoring the rates and time trends of AYA cancer emphasizes the distinct health concern for this age group.

RESUMO

Deterioration of air quality in Kuala Lumpur caused by mobile sources and traffic-related activities with interaction with climatic conditions and dispersion in the atmosphere. This study was focused on predicting the averaged 1-h concentration of particulate matter (PM10) that was emitted from private cars in Kuala Lumpur by applying the air dispersion model American Meteorological Society (AMS)/United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Regulatory Model (AERMOD) in 2014. The AERMOD model indicates that private cars in Kuala Lumpur recorded 1-h concentration of PM10 below the Malaysian Ambient Air Quality Guidelines (RMAQG) in 2014. The highest concentration was 59.2 µg/m3 in 2014 and mainly concentrated around the city center and highway networks. The highest concentrations are recorded in early morning and late at night, with the highest concentrations at 4 am and 2 am and 48.68 µg/m3 and 38.42 µg/m3, respectively. Late night to early morning is identified as the dominant time interval for pollutant dispersion. The findings demonstrated that air quality had a significant impact on the 1-h concentration of PM10 emitted from private cars in Kuala Lumpur.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Although advancements in surgical planning and multidisciplinary care have improved the survival of patients with hepatopancreatic cancers in recent years, the impact of the rurality of patient residence on care received and survival is not well known. We aimed to assess the association between the rurality of patient's residence and cancer-specific survival outcomes among patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and pancreatic cancer (PC) in Iowa, hypothesizing that patients in rural areas would experience lower survival. METHODS: Adult patients diagnosed with HCC or PC between 2010-2020 were identified using the Iowa Cancer Registry. Chi-square tests were used to compare categorical variables by rural/urban status. Logistic regression was used to examine factors associated with receiving surgery. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards regression was used to determine associations with cancer-specific mortality. RESULTS: Of 1,877 patients with HCC, 58%, 27%, and 16% resided in metropolitan, micropolitan, and rural areas, respectively. Nearly 70% of patients in rural areas traveled≥50 miles for definitive care. Additionally, those residing in rural areas had the highest proportion of patients receiving definitive care at non-Commission on Cancer (CoC) centers (12.6% Metro vs. 14% Micro vs. 22.2% Rural, P<0.001). In multivariable-adjusted analysis of patients with stage I-III disease, definitive care at a non-CoC center was independently associated with lower odds of surgery (95% CI: 0.23 [0.12-0.45], P<0.0001) and higher mortality risk (1.39 [95% CI: 1.07-1.79], P=0.01), though rural residence was not. For PC, 5,465 patients were diagnosed, and 51%, 28%, and 20% resided in metropolitan, micropolitan, and rural areas, respectively. Similar to HCC, although rural residence was neither associated with odds of surgery nor with mortality risk, receiving definitive care at non-CoC accredited centers was associated with significantly lower odds of receiving surgery (95% CI: 0.17 [0.11-0.26], P<0.0001) and higher mortality risk (1.48 [95% CI: 1.23-1.77], P<0.0001). CONCLUSION: Rural residents with hepatopancreatic cancer have the highest proportion of patients receiving definitive care at non-CoC centers, which is associated with lower odds of receiving surgery and higher odds of mortality. This highlights the importance of standardizing complex cancer care and the need to foster collaboration between specialized and non-specialized centers.

RESUMO

Clarifying the temporal and spatial changes in the carbon budget in the Chongqing metropolitan area and exploring the spatial correlation of land use carbon budget are of great significance for realizing the regional "double carbon" goal. Using 21 districts and counties in Chongqing metropolitan area as the research scale, the IPCC inventory method, carbon emission coefficient method, Gini coefficient, gravity model, and social network analysis were used to estimate the net carbon emissions from land use in Chongqing metropolitan area from 2000 to 2020, and the spatial correlation of the carbon budget was obtained. The results revealed that: ① In the past 20 years, the carbon budget of the Chongqing metropolitan area showed an overall upward trend, with an average annual growth rate of 2.83%, and the spatial distribution was "higher in the north and south, higher in the east and west, and lower in the middle." ② During the past 20 years, the spatial difference of net carbon emissions in the Chongqing metropolitan area became highly average, and the overall Gini coefficient decreased by 11.42%, whereas the intra-group difference was the largest in key development zones. ③ In the past 20 years, the overall structure of the spatial correlation network of land use carbon budget in the Chongqing metropolitan area has become stable and complex, and the network density and network correlation number have increased by 0.43 and 180, respectively, the network correlation degree has increased to 1, and the network health degree has improved. ④ In the individual network structure of land use carbon budget in the Chongqing metropolitan area, the degree centrality of each district and county has increased, and the increase in the central urban area was the most significant, with an increase of 81, whereas the decline in intermediate centrality and proximity centrality has promoted the regional coordinated development and integration process in the metropolitan area. ⑤ In the past 20 years, the density of net carbon emissions in the Chongqing metropolitan area has increased as a whole, with the density of the core area increasing by 0.35 and the density of the core-edge area increasing by 0.34. By exploring the change and spatial correlation of land use carbon budget in the Chongqing metropolitan area, this study clarified the spatial distribution difference of carbon budget and provided support for regional green development.

RESUMO

This study presents a mathematical model for optimal vaccination strategies in interconnected metropolitan areas, considering commuting patterns. It is a compartmental model with a vaccination rate for each city, acting as a control function. The commuting patterns are incorporated through a weighted adjacency matrix and a parameter that selects day and night periods. The optimal control problem is formulated to minimize a functional cost that balances the number of hospitalizations and vaccines, including restrictions of a weekly availability cap and an application capacity of vaccines per unit of time. The key findings of this work are bounds for the basic reproduction number, particularly in the case of a metropolitan area, and the study of the optimal control problem. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulations provide insights into disease dynamics and the effectiveness of control measures. The research highlights the importance of prioritizing vaccination in the capital to better control the disease spread, as we depicted in our numerical simulations. This model serves as a tool to improve resource allocation in epidemic control across metropolitan regions.

RESUMO

Rapid urbanization has highlighted ecological problems in the metropolitan area, with increasing landscape fragmentation and severe threats to ecosystem health (EH). Studying the spatio-temporal coupled relationship between landscape pattern and EH and its response to urbanization in the Fuzhou metropolitan area (FMA) can provide scientific reference for its long-term development planning. We examined the coupled relationship between landscape pattern and EH and its driving mechanism in the FMA at grid and township scales to address the gap. The results show that landscape heterogeneity, diversity, and dispersion are gradually increasing, and EH is rising progressively in the FMA from 2000 to 2020. The spatial distribution of landscape pattern indices and EH indicators showed a "high in the south and low in the north" trend. During the study period, the coupled relationship between landscape patterns and EH was increasingly powerful but with remarkable spatial heterogeneity. The study also found an inverted U-shaped relationship between urbanization and coupled relationships. Ecological landscapes' heterogeneity, diversity, and connectivity in low-urbanization areas are conducive to EH. The opposite is true for high-urbanization areas. This study provides a valuable reference for optimizing landscape planning and ecological management in metropolitan areas.

RESUMO

The circular economy (CE) is reasoned to organize complex systems supporting sustainable resilience by distinguishing between waste materials and economic growth. This is crucial to the electronic waste (e-waste) industry of developed countries, and e-waste operation management has become their top priority because e-waste contains toxic materials and valuable sources of elements. In the UK, although London Metropolitan city boasts an ambitious sustainable resilience target underlying the context of CE, practical implementation has yet to be feasible, with few investigations detailing if and how the existing target implications enable industrial and social-ecological sectors to continue their performance functionalities in the face of undesired disruptions. In this paper, a dynamic Bayesian Network (dynamic BN) approach is developed to address a range of potential risks. The existing London e-waste operation management is considered as an application of study for sustainable resilience development. Through the utilization of dynamic BN, a comprehensive analysis yields a Resilience Index (RI) of 0.5424, coupled with a StdDev of 0.01350. These metrics offer a profound insight into the intricate workings of a sustainable system and its capacity to swiftly rebound from unexpected shocks and disturbances. This newfound understanding equips policymakers with the knowledge needed to navigate the complexities of sustainable e-waste management effectively. The implications drawn from these in-depth analyses furnish policymakers with invaluable information, enabling them to make judicious decisions that advance the cause of sustainable e-waste management. The findings underscore that the absorptive capacity of a sustainable and resilient e-waste operation management system stands as the foremost defense mechanism against unforeseen challenges. Furthermore, it becomes evident that two pivotal factors, namely "diversifying the supply chain" and "enhancing supply chain transparency," play pivotal roles in augmenting the sustainability and resilience of e-waste operation management within the context of London's ambitious sustainability targets. These factors are instrumental in steering the trajectory of e-waste management towards a more sustainable and resilient future, aligning with London's aspirations for a greener and more eco-conscious future.

RESUMO

As climate change, such as global warming, has become a global environmental issue, clarifying the mechanism driving the carbon budget based on land use change has become an inevitable path to realize the "double carbon" goal. Based on the land use change characteristics in the Hangzhou Metropolitan Area from 1995 to 2020, this study employed the inventory accounting method, concentration index, and panel regression models to investigate the driving mechanisms of carbon budget dynamics influenced by land use changes. Moreover, the study utilized a "scenario-actor" policy analysis framework to propose low-carbon strategies through the integration of land use management within territorial spatial planning. The research findings were as follows: ① The carbon source capacity in the study area significantly surpassed its carbon sink capacity. The overall carbon budget concentration index had yet to exceed the 0.4 "alert threshold," with spatial concentration levels as follows: Hangzhou > Huangshan > Shaoxing > Quzhou > Jiaxing ≈ Huzhou. ② For croplands, larger areas and greater shape regularity contributed to a reduction in carbon budgets. Conversely, for constructed lands, expansive areas and increased fragmentation intensified the carbon budget levels, primarily driven by other urban land categories. ③ An increased proportion of croplands and higher land use heterogeneity promoted spatial equilibrium in carbon budgets, whereas the larger coverage and fragmentation of industrial and other urban lands led to an uneven spatial distribution of carbon budgets. ④ Low-carbon optimization of territorial space needs to adjust for the structure and form of carbon source functional land use as a key driver. At the policy implementation level, the central government and urban residents demonstrated strong support for low-carbon territorial control. However, cooperation from local governments, enterprises, and rural residents was suboptimal, necessitating complementary policies for effective guidance. This study holds practical significance for enhancing land use efficiency and promoting low-carbon urban development.

RESUMO

Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) is a sight-threatening condition with rising global incidence. Identifying factors contributing to seasonal variations in RRD would allow a better understanding of RRD pathophysiology. We therefore performed a retrospective case series study investigating the relationship between RRD occurrence and meteorological factors throughout metropolitan France (the METEO-POC study), particularly the mean temperature over the preceding 10-day period (T-1). Adult patients having undergone RRD surgery and residing in one of the three most populated urban areas of each French region were included (January 2011-December 2018). The study involved 21,166 patients with idiopathic RRD (61.1% males, mean age 59.8-65.1 years). RRD incidence per 100,000 inhabitants increased from 7.79 to 11.81. RRD occurrence was not significantly associated with mean temperature over T-1 in the majority of urban areas (31/36). In a minority of areas (5/36) we observed correlations between RRD incidence and mean temperature over T-1, however these were extremely weak (r = 0.1-0.2; p < 0.05). No associations were found between RRD incidence and secondary outcomes: mean daily temperature over the 10 days prior T-1, minimum/maximum temperatures, rainfall, duration of sunshine, atmospheric pressure, overall radiation, relative humidity, wind speed. Overall, we found no relationships between meteorological parameters and RRD occurrence.

RESUMO

Coastal areas, situated at the critical juncture of sea-land interaction, are confronted with significant challenges from coastal erosion and flooding. It is imperative to evaluate these risks and offer scientific guidance to foster regional sustainable development. This article developed a coastal risk assessment model based on grid scale, integrating both coastal exposure and socio-ecological environment. Fourteen indicators were selected, aiming to offer a systematic approach for estimating and comparing disaster risks in coastal areas. This risk assessment model was applied to Shanghai, New York, Sydney, San Francisco, Randstad, and Tokyo metropolitan areas. The results indicate: (1) Accounting for the protective role of habitat types like mangroves and the distance attenuation effect offered a more precise representation of hazard situation; (2) The integration of the Game Theory weighting method with both subjective Analytic Hierarchy Process and objective CRITIC weighting enhanced the scientific validity and rationality of the results by minimizing deviations between subjective and objective weights; (3) Shanghai exhibited the highest average hazard and vulnerability, San Francisco had the lowest average hazard and Sydney had the lowest average vulnerability; In terms of comprehensive risk, Shanghai possessed the highest average risk, while Sydney presented the lowest. The proposed model framework is designed to swiftly identify high-risk zones, providing detailed information references for local governments to devise efficacious risk management and prevention strategies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore potential enablers and barriers to accessing paediatric hearing assessment from the perspective of Australian service leads, extending previous studies on this topic from the perspectives of two other stakeholder groups - parents and speech pathologists. DESIGN: This qualitative study, expanding upon previous mixed-methods studies, applied a pragmatism paradigm. SETTING: The study was undertaken online via Zoom and included participants who were service leads of organisations that offer hearing assessment in metropolitan, regional, rural and remote parts of Australia. PARTICIPANTS: Eight Australian service leads participated in semi-structured interviews. RESULTS: Barriers identified were similar to barriers in previous studies. Three main themes were identified. First, children with hearing loss in Australia are well identified at birth. The second theme focused on the reduced and inconsistent hearing assessment services available after this age. Finally, service leads discussed the importance of embracing technology to solve service access difficulties. CONCLUSION: Consultation with key stakeholders, to consider the needs of different communities within Australia, will be crucial when identifying new service delivery options.

RESUMO

Metropolization has emerged as a prominent feature of 21st-century urbanization. To gain a comprehensive understanding of global urbanization patterns and pathways, as well as to interpret their consequences and implications, we aimed to provide a comparative characterization on urban transformation in metropolitan areas of developed and developing countries. Here, we quantified and compared the urban growth rates, growth modes, urban landscape metrics, and the co-evolution of urban land and population in 21 representative metropolitan areas across the United States, Europe, and China from 1985 to 2020, using remotely sensed impervious-surface dynamic dataset and patch-based analyses. The results showed that each metropolitan area has experienced substantial urban expansion with different scales and growth rates. Developing China possessed a relatively lower urbanization level but urbanized faster compared to the developed counterparts. Spatially, with infilling expansion increasing and even dominating, American and European metropolitan areas developed into more compact central urban cores, demonstrating the coalesced trajectories. Chinese metropolitan areas showed point-axis urban development mainly via edge-expansion in concentric rings. Furthermore, the horizontal co-evolution of urban area and population generally showed stable economies of scale in the United States and Europe whereas transitioned from diseconomy to economy of scale in China, evidencing that the century-long urbanization journey traversed by developed countries can be completed by emerging-developing ones within several decades. Temporally, the urban expansion greatly outpaced population growth in all metropolitan areas except London, signifying that urban land use efficiency is still a grand challenge in the Metropolitan Century. Effective metropolitan governance should be tailored to spatial configuration for efficient urban land use and intercity coordinated development towards a sustainable urban future, particularly for developing countries with emerging metropolization.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Maintaining higher-level functional capacity is important for independent living in older age. The aging trajectory of the Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology Index of Competence (TMIG-IC) has three patterns; however, the subscale patterns are unclear. AIMS: This study aimed to clarify the aging trajectory patterns of the TMIG-IC subscales among community-dwelling older Japanese. METHODS: Participants were 3,169 community-dwelling older Japanese who participated in the 2012-2022 mail survey of the Otassha study. The aging trajectory patterns of the TMIG-IC total and subscale scores for those aged 65-90 years were identified using group-based trajectory modeling. Further, the combination frequency of the subscale trajectory patterns was determined. RESULTS: Three patterns were identified: early-onset decreasing, late-onset decreasing, and high-stable. DISCUSSION: The instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) trajectory was maintained until approximately 80 years of age; however, chronic disease prevailed the most in the early-onset decreasing pattern. The early-onset decreasing pattern of intellectual activity (IA) was present in 25% of participants, showing impaired IA from 65 years of age. The late-onset decreasing pattern of social roles (SR) was present in 30% of participants, showing a sharp decline compared to other subscales. For many people, the patterns of decrease in SR and IA overlapped. CONCLUSIONS: To maintain higher-level functional capacity, interventions that include disease management and prevention of decline in IADL and increase the awareness of the social support provided throughout old age and interventions for people with an early decline in IA should be implemented.

RESUMO

In the context of rapid urbanization, metropolitan areas are facing the risk of supply-demand mismatches among ecosystem services. Investigating the patterns, relationships, and driving factors of multiple supply-demand risks is of great significance to support the efficient management of regional ecological risks. We quantified the single/comprehensive supply-demand risk rates of six ecosystem services in Wuhan Metropolitan Area at the township scale in 2000, 2010, and 2020. By applying the self-organizing feature map network and optimal parameter geo-detector, we identified supply-demand risks bundles of ecosystem services and influencing factors of comprehensive risks. The results showed significant spatial variations in the supply-demand risks of typical ecosystem services from 2000 to 2020. The supply-demand risk associated with grain production, water yield, carbon sequestration, and green space recreation increased, while soil conservation and water purification risks decreased. The comprehensive ecosystem services supply-demand risk increased from 0.41 to 0.45, indicating a 'core area increase and periphery decrease' trend. Throughout the study period, the area exhibited bundles of comprehensive extremely high-risk bundles (B1), comprehensive high-risk bundles (B2), water purification high-risk bundles (B3), and grain production-soil conservation risk bundles (B4). The transition of risk types from B3 to B2 and from B2 to B1 suggested an increase in the combination and intensity of supply-demand risk. Vegetation cover, nighttime light index, and population density were the main driving factors for spatial variations in comprehensive supply-demand risk. Ecologi-cal risk assessment based on ecosystem services supply-demand bundles could provide an effective and reliable way to regulate multiple regional risk issues.

RESUMO

Metropolitan integration development refers to the interconnection between cities and the coordinated development of various aspects such as economy, society, culture, and nature, which is the goal of metropolitan area development. With the Zhengzhou metropolitan area as the research area and based on nighttime light data from 2012 to 2021, we comprehensively used landscape index and landscape morphology spatial pattern analysis methods, systematically evaluated the integration process of the metropolitan area from the perspective of spatial expansion and spatial connection, analyzed the spatiotemporal variations of the landscape pattern of the metropolitan area, and revealed the spatiotemporal expansion and connection patterns of the metropolitan area. The results showed that the area of the Zhengzhou metropolitan area expanded year by year from 2012 to 2021, with the number of landscape patches continuously increasing, showing an agglomeration phenomenon. In the metropolitan area, there was a trend towards stability and multi-directional coordinated growth. The contribution of non-central cities to expansion increased annually, while the expansion patterns of various constituent cities gradually shifted from internal filling to external expansion. The connection scale within the metropolitan area had been expanding annually, with enhanced intercity connections. Intercity connection belts and channels for material and information exchange were emerging, and the integrated network of urban agglomeration connections was gradually forming. Metropolitan integration planning provided positive guidance for the development of metropolitan areas. We should fully leverage the driving effects of metropolitan areas, pay attention to the integration of Zhengzhou-Kaifeng and Zhengzhou-Xuchang, promote the formation of emerging growth poles in Xinxiang and Jiaozuo, as well as regional coordinated development, strengthen the network of policies, economy, transportation, information, etc., and form a diversified and integrated development situation.

RESUMO

At present, an in-depth knowledge of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the multimedia system of the urban environment remains limited. Taking the Naples metropolitan area (NMA) for instance, we simulated the cross-media transfer of PAHs using a multimedia urban model, involving air, water, soil, sediment, vegetation, and impervious film. The results indicated that the predicted PAH values in 2015 match well with their corresponding in-situ monitoring data. The PAH emission inventory and the simulated mass in various media all showed a downward trend from 2015 to 2020 due to national energy conservation policies and Corona Virus Disease 2019. The simulated mass of PAHs in the soil and sediment phases was 896.8 and 232.7 kg in 2020, respectively, contributing together to 96.7% of PAHs in the NMA. And they were identified as the greatest sinks for PAHs, and exhibited the longest retention duration, with values of PAH persistence reaching approximately 548.8 - 2,0642.3 hours. The results of transfer fluxes indicated that local emissions and atmospheric advection were the primary routes affecting the distribution of PAHs. The sensitivity analysis indicated that atmospheric advection rate was the most critical parameter for air, soil, vegetation, and film, whereas water concentration and sediment degradation rate were vital for water and sediment, respectively. This study offered valuable insights into how human activity contributes to the status and fate of PAHs in the urban environment.
