The soybean aphid, Aphis glycines Matsumura, 1917, is a crucial soybean pest. Cultivated soybean, Glycine max (Carl von Linné) Elmer Drew Merrill, 1917, and wild soybean, Glycine soja Philipp Franz von Siebold & Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini, 1843, are summer hosts of A. glycines. In this study, the development, reproduction, and morphogenesis of A. glycines fed wild soybean (AgFW) were studied at different temperatures and photoperiods. The data were compared with that of A. glycines fed soybean (AgFS). At 20-29 °C, the adult lifespan of the first-third-generation AgFW was shorter than or equal to that of AgFS. Significant differences existed in the adult fecundity and intrinsic rate of increase between AgFW and AgFS. At a 10L:14D h photoperiod, males of AgFW were deposited earlier than, or as early as, males of AgFS. At 17 °C, the gynoparae of AgFW were deposited in proportions greater than or equal to those of AgFS. Based on these results, we concluded that the adaptability of AgFW and AgFS to temperature and photoperiod significantly differs. It is important to understand the life cycle of A. glycines in Harbin, northeast China, and formulate an integrated pest management strategy for A. glycines in the region.

Wing dimorphism is a distinguishing characteristic of brown planthopper Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) populations, wherein adults exhibit 2 distinct morphs: long-winged and short-winged. The presence of long-winged individuals often heralds the onset of migration, while short-winged morphs signify high reproduction and can be associated with population outbreaks. This phenomenon underscores the adaptability of these insects in response to environmental cues and their impact on agricultural ecosystems. Wing morphs of N. lugens are controlled by genetical and environmental factors. Mate choice between long and short-winged adults affects wing morphs of offspring. In this study, we found that the wild population had no persistent preference for choosing long-winged or short-winged adults to mate. But in 2 multigenerational selected lineages for long and short-winged morphs, the short-winged males preferred to short-winged females to mate and the long-winged males had no preference. In the nearly pure-bred lineages of long-winged and short-winged morphs, both wing morphs of females preferred for short-winged males. Purification of wing morph lineages enhanced mating preference for short-winged partners. When the wing developmental gene InR1 or InR2 was interfered by RNAi, the pure-bred lineage of long-winged morph mainly produced short-winged adults and the short-winged morphs produced long-winged adults, and these adults exhibited preference to mate with short-winged partners. The tendency to mate with short-winged morphs leads to more short-winged offspring which easily causes the rapid growth of populations.

In this paper, we examine intraspecific variation in the quantity of alkaloid chemical defence in field collected individuals of the polymorphic ladybird beetle Adalia decempunctata (10-spot ladybird). Like its more widely studied relative Adalia bipunctata (2-spot ladybird), A. decempunctata possesses the alkaloids adaline and adalinine, which are, respectively, the major and minor alkaloids of A. bipunctata. We focused especially on alkaloid concentration in relation to colour pattern morph, sex, and the relationship between female and egg parameters. There was a marked sexual dimorphism in the balance of the two alkaloids, with adaline predominating in females and adalinine predominating in males: in males, on average, over 70% of total alkaloid was adalinine. Females had a lower proportion of adalinine (< 10%) than their eggs (> 15%) and relationships between egg alkaloid and female alkaloid or fecundity were weak or non-existent. Colour pattern morph had a borderline (although not) significant relationship with adaline concentration and total alkaloid concentration, which could be further explored with laboratory reared individuals. The sexual dimorphism in alkaloid content, which seems likely due to differences in synthesis, might be related to their relative costs to the two sexes and might provide insight into the evolution of alkaloid diversity in ladybirds.

During a survey of the diversity of lignicolous fungi in Yunnan Province, China, we collected and identified five microfungi species from dead woody litters of Castanopsis trees in terrestrial habitats. Through both morphological comparisons and phylogenetic analyses of multi-gene sequences, we identified two taxa as new species and three collections as new host records within Pleosporales. Pseudolophiostomalincangense sp. nov. is introduced as a sexual morph in Lophiostomataceae, Pleopunctumbaoshanense sp. nov. is introduced as a hyphomycetous fungi in Phaeoseptaceae, and Paraphomaaquatica as a first report of sexual morph in Paraphoma. In addition, Occultibambusakunmingensis and Pleopunctummegalosporum were isolated for the first time from the dead twigs of Castanopsisdelavayi and C.calathiformis, respectively. Comprehensive morphological descriptions, illustrations, and phylogenetic analysis results are provided for the above-mentioned species.

A thorough understanding of the development of complex plumages in birds necessitates the acquisition of genetic data pertaining to the mechanism underlying this phenomenon from various avian species. The oriental honey-buzzard (Pernis ptilorhynchus orientalis), a tropical summer migrant to Northeast Asia, including Japan, exemplifies this aspect owing to the diversity of its ventral coloration and intra-feather barring patterns. However, genetic polymorphism responsible for this diversity has not been identified yet. This study aimed to investigate the link between dark-plumed phenotypes of this subspecies and haplotypes of the melanocortin-1-receptor (MC1R) gene. A draft sequence of MC1R was constructed using next generation sequencing and subsequently amplified using designed polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers. The genome sequences of 32 honey-buzzard individuals were determined using PCR, and 12 MC1R haplotype sequences were obtained. Among these haplotypes, we found that unique haplotypes with nine non-synonymous substitutions and four or five synonymous substitutions in the coding region had a perfect correlation with the dark-plumed phenotype. The lack of correlation between the genotype of ASIP coding region and plumage phenotype reiterated that the dark morph is attributable to specific MC1R haplotypes. The absence of a correlation between genetic polymorphisms of MC1R and the intra-feather barring patterns, as well as the diversity observed within lighter ground color classes (pale and intermediate), implies the involvement of alternative molecular mechanisms in the manifestation of the aforementioned phenotypes.

Background: The use of multiple overlapping stents for long lesions in tapered coronary arteries has been associated with poor outcomes. This study was conducted to evaluate the 3-year safety and performance of the BioMime™ Morph sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) in very long (length 30 to ≤ 56 mm) coronary lesions in native coronary arteries with a reference vessel diameter of 2.25 to 3.50 mm. Methods: This was a prospective, single-center, observational, real-world, post-marketing surveillance study. Eligible patients were implanted with BioMime™ Morph SES. Patients were followed up at 6, 12, 24, and 36 months. Results: A total of 88 patients were enrolled in the study. The mean age was 58.72 ± 10.10 years and 82.95% were male. Most patients had angina (81.82%) and ischemic heart disease (78.41%), and there was a high prevalence of comorbidities like diabetes mellitus (59.09%), and hypertension (54.55%). A total of 92 long coronary de novo lesions were treated with BioMime™ Morph SES with an average stent length of 45.54 ± 10.20 mm. Device and procedural success rates were 100%. One patient died at 30 days and one case of myocardial infarction was recorded. The cumulative rates of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) at 6, 12, 24, and 36 months were 3.41%, 6.82%, 7.95%, and 7.95%, respectively. There were no cases of stent thrombosis (ST), ischemia-driven target vessel revascularization, or ischemia-driven target lesion revascularization until 36 months of follow-up. Conclusion: BioMime™ Morph SES showed favorable outcomes up to 3 years in treating very long coronary lesions in native coronary arteries, as demonstrated by an acceptable rate of MACEs and absence of ST, based on clinical outcomes up to 3 years.

RESUMO

Strawberry or red leopards are a rare colour morph of leopard (Panthera pardus) characterised by spot markings that are red or brown instead of black, thought to be a result of a mutation in the tyrosinase-related protein (TYRP1) gene. We report the first record of this phenotype on the African continent outside of South Africa, from Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania. One female leopard with strawberry colouration was documented out of 373 individual leopards (0.3%) identified through camera trap surveys conducted from 2020 to 2022 over a combined area of more than 4600 km2 in the Nyerere-Selous landscape.

Two new Keratinophyton species, K. kautmanovae sp. nov. and K. keniense sp. nov., isolated from soil samples originating from two different geographical and environmental locations (Africa and Europe) are described and illustrated. Phylogenetically informative sequences obtained from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the nuclear large subunit (LSU) rDNA, as well as their unique phenotype, fully support novelty of these two fungi for this genus. Based on ITS and LSU combined phylogeny, both taxa are resolved in a cluster with eight accepted species, including K. alvearium, K. chongqingense, K. hubeiense, K. durum, K. lemmensii, K. siglerae, K. submersum, and K. sichuanense. The new taxon, K. kautmanovae, is characterized by clavate, smooth to coarsely verrucose conidia, absence of arthroconidia, slow growth at 25 °C, and no growth at 30 °C, while K. keniense is morphologically unique with a high diversity of conidial shapes (clavate, filiform, globose, cymbiform and rhomboid). Both species are described based on their asexual, a chrysosporium-like morph. While the majority of hitherto described Keratinophyton taxa came from Europe, India and China, the new species K. keniense represents the first reported taxonomic novelty for this genus from Africa.

BACKGROUND: Body-color polymorphisms in insects are often explained by environmental selective advantages. Differential fitness related to body coloration has been demonstrated in Myzus persicae (Sulzer): performance of the red morph is in general better than that of the green morph on tobacco plants. However, the molecular mechanism involved is largely unclear. RESULTS: Here we showed that the red morph of M. persicae had higher expression of a carotenoid desaturase CarD763 in the whole body, salivary gland and saliva relative to the green morph. Also, 18% individuals displayed faded red body color 5 days post dsCarD763 treatment. Furthermore, knockdown of CarD763 in the red morph significantly prolonged the time needed to locate phloem and shortened the duration of phloem feeding. Honeydew production and survival rate decreased as well. In contrast, overexpression of CarD763 in tobacco leaves facilitated aphid feeding, enhanced honeydew production and improved the survival rate of aphids. Compared with those fed by dsGFP aphids, plants infested by dsCarD763-treated aphids had higher ROS accumulation, lower lycopene content and photosynthetic rate, and maximum photon quantum yield. The reverse was true when plants overexpressed CarD763. CONCLUSION: These findings demonstrated that CarD763, a red morph-specific salivary protein, could enhance aphid feeding and early colonization by promoting plant photosynthesis. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

BACKGROUND: Foraging behavior in insects is optimised for locating scattered resources in a complex environment. This behavior can be exploited for use in pest control. Inhibition of feeding can protect crops whereas stimulation can increase the uptake of insecticides. For example, the success of a bait spray, depends on either contact or ingestion, and thus on the insect finding it. METHODS: To develop an effective bait spray against the invasive pest, Drosophila suzukii, we investigated aspects of foraging behavior that influence the likelihood that the pest interacts with the baits, in summer and winter morphotypes. We video-recorded the flies' approach behavior towards four stimuli in a two-choice experiment on strawberry leaflets. To determine the most effective bait positioning, we also assessed where on plants the pest naturally forages, using a potted raspberry plant under natural environmental conditions. We also studied starvation resistance at 20 °C and 12 °C for both morphs. RESULTS: We found that summer morph flies spent similar time on all baits (agar, combi-protec, yeast) whereas winter morphs spent more time on yeast than the other baits. Both morphs showed a preference to feed at the top of our plant's canopy. Colder temperatures enhanced survival under starvation conditions in both morphs, and mortality was reduced by food treatment. CONCLUSIONS: These findings on feeding behavior support informed decisions on the type and placement of a bait to increase pest control.

In heterostylous plants, short-tongued pollinators are often ineffective/inefficient owing to the limitations imposed by a long corolla tube. However, it is unclear how disassortative pollen transfer is achieved in small flowers. We investigated the pollination pattern and floral morph variation by analyzing heterostylous syndrome, pollinator groups, and pollen deposition after a single visitation in two Limonium myrianthum populations with short-corolla-tubular small flowers. The predominant pollinators in the Hutubi population were pollen-seeking short-tongued syrphids, which can only transfer pollen between high-level sexual organs. In the Xishan population, nectar-seeking short-tongued insects were efficient pollinators with symmetrical disassortative pollen transfer between high- and low-level sexual organs, whereas long-tongued pollinators had a low efficiency between high-level sexual organs due to the low contact probability with the stigma of long-styled flowers (L-morph), which no longer offered the same advantage observed in tubular flowers. Asymmetrical disassortative pollination may cause the female fitness of short-styled (S-morph) individuals in the Hutubi and L-morph individuals in the Xishan population to suffer greater selection pressure and exhibit a higher degree of floral morph variation. Limonium myrianthum exhibits an unusual pollination pattern in which the small flowers with short corolla tubes make it possible for short-tongued insects to become effective pollinators. However, factors such as the position of stigma-anther within the flower, pollinator species and their preference further caused asymmetrical disassortative pollen transfer. Therefore, more factors should be considered when evaluating the effectiveness of short- and long-tongued insects in pollination service.

Abstract. Heterostyly, a genetic style polymorphism, is linked to symmetric pollen transfer, vital for its maintenance. Clonal growth typically impacts sexual reproduction by influencing pollen transfer. However, the floral morph variation remains poorly understood under the combined effects of pollinators and clonal growth in heterostyly characterized by negative frequency-dependent selection and disassortative mating. We estimated morph ratios, ramets per genet and heterostylous syndrome and quantified legitimate pollen transfer via clonal growth, pollinators and reciprocal herkogamy between floral morphs in Limonium otolepis, a fragmented population composed of five subpopulations in the desert environment of northwestern China, with small flower and large floral morph variation. All subpopulations but one exhibited pollen-stigma morphology dimorphism. The compatibility between mating types with different pollen-stigma morphologies remained consistent regardless of reciprocal herkogamy. Biased ratios and ramets per genet of the two mating types with distinct pollen-stigma morphologies caused asymmetric pollen flow and varying fruit sets in all subpopulations. Short-tongued insects were the primary pollinators due to small flower sizes. However, pollen-feeding Syrphidae sp. triggered asymmetry in pollen flow between high and low sex organs, with short-styled morphs having lower stigma pollen depositions and greater variation. Clonal growth amplified this variation by reducing intermorph pollen transfer. All in all, pollinators and clonal growth jointly drive floral morph variation. H-morphs with the same stigma-anther position and self-incompatibility, which mitigate the disadvantages of sunken low sex organs with differing from the classical homostyly, might arise from long- and short-styled morphs through a 'relaxed selection'. This study is the first to uncover the occurrence of the H-morph and its associated influencing factors in a distylous plant featuring clonal growth, small flowers and a fragmented population.

Parsing signals from noise is a general problem for signallers and recipients, and for researchers studying communicative systems. Substantial efforts have been invested in comparing how other species encode information and meaning, and how signalling is structured. However, research depends on identifying and discriminating signals that represent meaningful units of analysis. Early approaches to defining signal repertoires applied top-down approaches, classifying cases into predefined signal types. Recently, more labour-intensive methods have taken a bottom-up approach describing detailed features of each signal and clustering cases based on patterns of similarity in multi-dimensional feature-space that were previously undetectable. Nevertheless, it remains essential to assess whether the resulting repertoires are composed of relevant units from the perspective of the species using them, and redefining repertoires when additional data become available. In this paper we provide a framework that takes data from the largest set of wild chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) gestures currently available, splitting gesture types at a fine scale based on modifying features of gesture expression using latent class analysis (a model-based cluster detection algorithm for categorical variables), and then determining whether this splitting process reduces uncertainty about the goal or community of the gesture. Our method allows different features of interest to be incorporated into the splitting process, providing substantial future flexibility across, for example, species, populations, and levels of signal granularity. Doing so, we provide a powerful tool allowing researchers interested in gestural communication to establish repertoires of relevant units for subsequent analyses within and between systems of communication.

This work introduces a mixed-transducer micro-origami to achieve efficient vibration, controllable motion, and decoupled sensing. Existing micro-origami systems tend to have only one type of transducer (actuator/sensor), which limits their versatility and functionality because any given transducer system has a narrow range of advantageous working conditions. However, it is possible to harness the benefit of different micro-transducer systems to enhance the performance of functional micro-origami. More specifically, this work introduces a micro-origami system that can integrate the advantages of three transducer systems: strained morph (SM) systems, polymer based electro-thermal (ET) systems, and thin-film lead zirconate titanate (PZT) systems. A versatile photolithography fabrication process is introduced to build this mixed-transducer micro-origami system, and their performance is investigated through experiments and simulation models. This work shows that mixed-transducer micro-origami can achieve power efficient vibration with high frequency, large vibration ranges, and little degradation; can produce decoupled folding motion with good controllability; and can accomplish simultaneous sensing and actuation to detect and interact with external environments and small-scale samples. The superior performance of mixed-transducer micro-origami systems makes them promising tools for micro-manipulation, micro-assembly, biomedical probes, self-sensing metamaterials, and more.

Of the 12 wild felid species found in China, Asiatic golden cat (Catopuma temminckii) is one of the least studied species. This medium-sized cat with a prominently polymorphic coat was once distributed across much of southern China, but is believed to have experienced severe decline and range contraction during the past decades, primarily due to anthropogenic pressures. A lack of knowledge of its current distribution, ecology, and natural history has greatly hindered the implementation of conservation and management actions for this species. In this study, for the first time, we compiled the state-wide occurrence records (N = 409), mainly from the camera-trapping surveys, of Asiatic golden cats from 2008 to 2019, and predicted its distribution across the country through species distribution modeling using random forest algorithm. The results showed that the predicted habitats were mainly located in southwest China and suggested a rather low probability of possible current distribution across its vast historic range in central, eastern, and southern China. We divided its current range into four geographic regions (i.e., Qinling Mountains, Hengduan Mountains, East Himalayas, and southern Yunnan region) and considered the cats in each region as a regional population within the country. From the 287 camera-trapping detections with photographs and/or videos collected across all populations, we identified six coat morphs and determined their occurrence percentages: common golden (47.4%), spotted (20.9%), red (13.6%), dark cinnamon (10.1%), melanistic (7.0%), and gray (1.0%). The complexity of coat morph composition within regional populations showed an increasing gradient from northeast to southwest. Among the four regional populations, the East Himalayas hosted the highest abundance and coat variation with all six morphs recorded. Our study results update the current distribution and coat morphology variations of this elusive cat in China and provide important knowledge to guide future research and conservation planning for this threatened species.

During our investigation of saprophytic fungi in Guizhou and Hainan provinces, China, three hyphomycetes were collected from terrestrial and freshwater habitats. Based on morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analyses of combined ITS, LSU, tef1-α, and rpb2 sequence data, two new species are introduced: Distoseptisporahainanensis and D.lanceolatispora. Additionally, one known species, D.tectonae, previously unreported from Edgeworthiachrysantha, is newly reported. Detailed descriptions, illustrations, and a phylogenetic tree to show the two new species and the new host record of Distoseptispora are provided. In addition, a checklist of Distoseptispora species with their locations, lifestyles, habitats, and hosts is provided.

Peatswamp forest is a unique habitat that supports high biodiversity, particularly fungal diversity. The current study collected submerged and dead plant parts from Eleiodoxaconferta, Eugeissonatristis and Licualapaludosa from a peatswamp forest in Narathiwat Province, Thailand. Morphological features coupled with multigene phylogenetic analyses of ITS, LSU, rpb2 and tef1-α sequence data identified our isolates as new Distoseptispora species (viz. D.arecacearumsp. nov., D.eleiodoxaesp. nov. and D.narathiwatensissp. nov.). Morphological descriptions, illustrations and notes are provided.

Pacific chub, Kyphosus sandwicensis, are typically gray but some individuals display a golden color morph. We estimated that the frequency of occurrence of the golden morphs increased significantly from 2007 (1.9%) and 2012 (2.6%) to 2017 (5.0%) inside a no-take marine reserve around Nihoa Island in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands. While sporadic observations of a golden color morph have been noted for several other marine fish species, we provide a quantitative estimate of changes in the frequency of occurrence of the morph within a wild marine population.

In this study, a new species Fusarium indicum belonging to the Fusarium concolor species complex is established to accommodate an endophytic fungus isolated from Bambusa sp. and collected from Himachal Pradesh. The identity of this isolate was confirmed based on the asexual morphs, its cultural characteristics, and phylogenetic analyses. This isolate revealed out to be distinct by showing less similarity with described species in the genus Fusarium based on molecular sequence data, approximately 93.9% similarity based on translation elongation factor 1-alpha, and 94.2% similarity based on RNA polymerase II subunit. Furthermore, to increase knowledge about this novel species, whole-genome sequencing was carried out. The results displayed that Fusarium indicum NFCCI 5145 possesses a 40.2 Mb genome and 48.39% of GC content. Approximately 12,963 functional protein-coding genes were carefully predicted and annotated using different BLAST databases, such as Uniprot, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG), Gene Ontology (GO), Pathogen Host Interactions (PHI), Clusters of Orthologous Groups (COG), and Carbohydrate-Active enzymes (CAZy). The orthologous proteins were identified using OrthoFinder and used for the phylogenetic analysis. ANIb confirmed that the isolate is closely related to the F. concolor species complex. It is known that Fusarium strains can produce a wide range of bioactive secondary metabolites. Therefore, in-depth mining for biosynthetic gene clusters for secondary metabolite biosynthesis of Fusarium indicum NFCCI 5145 was investigated using Antibiotics and Secondary Metabolites Analysis Shell (AntiSMASH) annotation. AntiSMASH results displayed that this isolate possesses 45 secondary metabolites of biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). These findings significantly improved our understanding of the strain Fusarium indicum NFCCI 5145 and its possible applications in different sectors including industry for the secondary metabolites and enzymes it can produce.
