RESUMO

A large portion of Ghana's population, particularly in rural areas, lack reliable access to safely managed water. Many of these communities rely on groundwater as their primary drinking water source. Distinguished by its thorough examination of F- occurrences in Ghana, this study complements previous studies by meticulously analyzing groundwater-soil and -plant dynamics, global implications, and region-specific insights, notably in the high-risk Bongo area. The study showed that Fluoride contamination in Ghana is evident in various regions, with primary data showcasing concentrations ranging from 0.05 mg/L-1 to 13.29 mg/L-1. The Bongo District in the north exhibits elevated fluoride levels, surpassing WHO safety limits of 1.5 mg/L-1 [62]. Additional studies in Sekyere South and Nalerigu disclose concentrations from 0.3 mg/L-1 to 4.0 mg/L-1 and 0.35 mg/L-1 to 3.95 mg/L-1, respectively. Contamination probabilities range from 50 % to 90 % in the north and northeast. While southern areas lack extensive data, the identified hotspots necessitate further investigation. Geological factors significantly influence fluoride levels, emphasizing the urgent need for comprehensive monitoring, mitigation, and public awareness. The identified contamination poses risks to public health, urging immediate action for sustainable solutions and ensuring safe drinking water in affected regions. The health implications of fluoride toxicity on the residents of regions prone to fluoride exposure are noteworthy. As a result, an inevitable surge in instances of dental and skeletal fluorosis can be anticipated. Notwithstanding the challenges, research indicates optimistic prospects for mitigating fluoride pollution in drinking water. Techniques like the utilization of "Bone Charcoal" and the "Contact Precipitation" approach offer promise for remediation. These methods can be implemented at a household level and some are economically viable, making them advisable for adoption in fluoride-prone areas of Ghana.

Athabasca oil sands in Alberta, Canada, are large bitumen deposits and are one of the world's largest petroleum reserves. This research contributes to the growing body of knowledge on the influence of this naturally occurring bitumen on freshwaters. Using laboratory-based exposure studies, we examined the life cycle responses of the aquatic midge Chironomus riparius to both naturally formed solid bitumen incorporated in the sediment and its corresponding aqueous extracts, denominated as elutriates. The 28-day partial life cycle assay involved bitumen samples from two distinct geological origins in the Athabasca River Basin (Clearwater and McMurray formations), comprising both weathered and freshly collected bitumen from a total of 4 different rivers. Our results demonstrate a measurable impact of sediment-embedded bitumen on C. riparius life history traits, namely on their growth and emergence patterns. Furthermore, we observed that bitumen samples from the Ells River (McMurray formation), which were freshly collected from exposed river bank soil deposits, exerted the strongest effects on most studied eco-physiological endpoints. Bitumen extracts from the Steepbank River and Athabasca River in the McMurray Formation and Steepbank River in the Clearwater Formation followed, underscoring the geographical variance in bitumen-induced toxicity. Exposure to elutriates, simulating "weathered" bitumen generally did not induce adverse effects in C. riparius life-cycle endpoints compared to elutriates prepared from freshly eroded bank soils. This emphasizes the importance of considering bitumen sources, their age, and the aquatic receiving environment when assessing potential adverse exposure effects. Our study shows that exposure to freshly eroded soils/sediments can potentially affect benthic invertebrates. More research is needed to understand how hydrological changes affect bitumen sediment exposure and the associated risks to aquatic biota.

Samples of Anemonia sulcata were collected in 2022 from different areas of the Canary Islands affected by different natural contamination sources, such sandstorms, submarine volcanic activity, continuous rainfall, upwelling and dinoflagellate blooms. Significant differences were observed between the zones for the metals and trace elements analyzed (Al, Zn, Cd, Pb, Ni, Co, Fe, B, Cu, Mg and Li). Anemones from volcanic areas showed higher levels of Cd, Pb and Ni. Individuals from sandstorm areas showed elevated levels of Al, Zn and Fe. Samples collected from areas affected by upwelling processes had higher concentrations of Cu, Mg and Li. Finally, the areas affected by dinoflagellates showed lower levels of Zn, Pb, Fe, Mg and Li. The study reveals how natural phenomena dramatically influence metal accumulation in A. sulcata, which is of great value for anticipating and managing potential problems associated with public health.

To fully understand the ecological and cumulative effects of mining activities on the surrounding aquatic systems of the Canadian oil sands region, it is essential to understand the consequences of exposure to bitumen-containing soils/sediment from natural geomorphological processes. Both physical and chemical stress on aquatic biota can potentially result from exposure to natural bitumen, resulting from hillslope erosional processes and slumping of bankside soils into the rivers, affecting both riverbed habitat and water quality. The magnitude and duration of bitumen-containing soil's fluvial soils/erosional input into receiving watersheds depends on the interannual variability in the regional hydroclimatology and related seasonal and extreme flow events. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the potential ecotoxicological effects associated with erosional input of riverbank bitumen soils using controlled exposures. A series of integrated, laboratory-based ecotoxicological bioassays were conducted using organisms with different ecological and functional traits (Daphnia magna (Cladocera), Physa acuta (Gastropoda), and Aliivibrio fischeri (Bacteria)). All model organisms were exposed to elutriates produced from natural bitumen from four different regional rivers: fresh bitumen from shoreline outcrops at the Steepbank River upper and lower reaches (STB-CF and STB-MF, respectively) and the lower-Ells River (EL-MF) and aged, fluvially processed/weathered bitumen from the shoreline of the Athabasca River (ATB-MF). All tested organisms responded negatively to STB-MF and EL-MF elutriates. Low toxicity was also observed in the STB-CF and ATB-MF samples. These results follow the chemical analysis of the parental material and elutriates, where higher levels of metals, polycyclic aromatic compounds and naphthenic acids were detected in the EL-MF sample. In summary, this study shows that eroded and transported bitumen-containing soils and sediments could be a natural source of contaminant exposure to aquatic biota. This fluvial pathway should be considered when assessing background toxicity and the toxicological and ecological effects of oil sands mining activities.

This study evaluated differences in the efficiency of ozonation process to reduce the natural contamination of two mycotoxins, deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone (ZEN), in wheat grains and particulate products. Three different products were used, each one representing a different structure and mycotoxin distribution: (1) wheat grains, with natural mycotoxin distribution inside and among the grains; (2) homemade pellets, with homogenous mycotoxin distribution; (3) ground homemade pellets, with homogeneous mycotoxin distribution, and smaller particles. The ozonation of naturally contaminated wheat grains did not reduce the concentrations of DON and ZEN. When the variability of contamination among replicates was reduced by the production of homemade pellets showed, the ozonation provides a reduction of 14% of ZEN concentration. Reducing the size of particles by grinding the homemade pellets, a reduction of DON (11%) and ZEN (31%) was observed, which was evidenced by the higher ozone consumption during the process. Therefore, some limitations of ozonation of grains and particulate products, such as particle dimensions and distribution of natural contamination of mycotoxins affect the degradation of DON and ZEN under real conditions. Because of this, further studies to evaluate the effectiveness of ozonation should also be performed in samples naturally contaminated to produce robustness results.

OBJECTIVES: This study explores whether ancient Atacama Desert populations in northern Chile were exposed to endemic boron contamination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using Laser Ablation-Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), we studied 144 strands of ancient mummy hair, ranging from 3000 B.C. to 1500 A.D., excavated from the Lluta, Azapa, and Camarones valleys in northern Chile. We tested whether these ancient populations showed signs of significant boron concentration in hair tissue. RESULTS: On average, all individuals from these valleys showed high boron concentrations, ranging from 1.5 to 4 times above the average boron concentration in contemporary hair (baseline <0.85 µg/g). The boron concentration in mummy hair varied according to the main geographic areas mentioned above. CONCLUSIONS: The rivers of northern Chile have high geogenic boron concentrations. They contain 38 times above the recommended limit for human consumption. Geogenic boron contamination likely played a role in population morbidity and the types of crops that were cultivated in antiquity. The ancient populations were chronically affected by boron overexposure, suggesting that ancient geogenic water contamination should be considered when discussing the biocultural trajectories of ancient populations.

In the field of mycotoxin research, there is an increasing requirement to understand the effect of these toxins at realistic contamination levels, and as mixtures, on animal health and performance. Although there are recommendations of maximum levels of some mycotoxins in feed, it is known from practice that concentrations below the maximum recommended levels already negatively affect livestock production. In the present study, we exposed broilers to three different levels of naturally contaminated diets containing deoxynivalenol (DON) and its derivates 3 + 15 Acetyl-DON (3 + 15 Ac-DON) and DON-3-glucoside (DON-3-G) to evaluate their effect on birds performance. 630 day-old Ross 308 broilers were housed in 30 pens (21 birds per pen) and fed diets containing increasing levels of DON (Low: 1,650-1,890 µg/kg; Moderate: 2,500-2,880 µg/kg DON; and High: 3,220-3,900 µg/kg), 3 + 15 Acetyl-DON (Low: 25.6-39.4 µg/kg; Moderate: 42.3-49.1 µg/kg; and High: 58.4-71.1 µg/kg), and DON-3-G (Low: 356-362 µg/kg; Moderate: 405-637 µg/kg; and High: 625-787 µg/kg). Each diet had 10 replicate pens. During the grower period (D13-28) broilers fed diets containing moderate and high contamination levels presented a significantly increased feed intake but accompanied by significant impairment in FCR when the broilers were fed the highest contamination level. Based on this, it can be concluded that broiler production is affected when feed is contaminated with a mixture of DON and its derivates, even at levels below the EU maximum recommendation of 5,000 µg/kg. Furthermore, extra attention should be given to multi-mycotoxins contamination in diets for broilers up to 28 days old.

In the Athabasca region, the oil sands are located at or near the surface making open-pit mining viable. In addition, the Athabasca River and its tributaries flow through these oil sands deposits, thereby receiving bitumen-associated contaminants through natural fluvial erosional and weathering processes. A key knowledge gap has been related to understanding both the magnitude and significance of the toxicological and ecological effects on aquatic organisms exposed to naturally occurring bitumen entering fluvial systems. Using the Daphnia magna model system, this study assessed the ecotoxicological effects of exposure to bitumen-elutriate treatments that simulated the early stages of fluvial/erosional exposure conditions. No significant among-site differences were observed in the survival of D. magna after 48 h exposure to elutriates produced from a 24 h extraction cycle, and chemical analysis indicated low concentration of a complex mixture of hydrocarbon and metal contaminants. In contrast, the same elutriates impaired reproduction and growth after a 21-day chronic exposure. F1 neonates from the chronic tests were tested for sensitivity to the reference substance potassium dichromate, revealing a decrease in their sensitivity. Inter-generational effects were also observed, with a significant decrease in subsequent neonate production, when daphnids were moved to a clean medium. Supplemental acute toxicity assays using 48 and 72 h bitumen extraction cycles progressively increased daphnid mortality after a 48-h exposure to the respective elutriates. This indicates that bitumen-associated contaminants are being liberated after initial input and fluvial washing (24 h), highlighting the need for future work to assess toxicity responses and associated elutriate water chemistry of a longer fluvial exposure time-series. This work contributes to our understanding of the possible effects of natural bitumen exposure on riverine aquatic ecosystems, providing new information to inform the delineation of baseline conditions to assess environmental change and the design of future regional effects-based monitoring programs.

To assess the antimicrobial effect of a commercial UV-C system, knives inoculated with Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus as well as naturally contaminated and collected from the wet and clean area of a slaughterhouse knives were examined. For inoculated knives, UVC treatment for 30 s reduced mean E. coli counts by 5.1 log CFU cm-2 and mean S. aureus counts by 4.5 log CFU cm-2. The presence of blood lowered mean reductions to 3.4 log CFU cm-2 for E. coli and to 2.5 log CFU cm-2 for S. aureus. The presence of fat had a greater negative impact on the efficacy of the UV-C treatment resulting in mean reductions <1.8 log CFU cm-2. For naturally contaminated knives from a slaughterhouse, total viable counts (TVC) before UV-C treatment varied considerably (wet area: 2.0-6.0 log CFU cm-2, clean area: 1.0-3.0 log CFU cm-2). UV-C treatment for 30s reduced mean TVC by 0.8 log CFU cm-2 (wet area) and 0.6 log CFU cm-2 (clean area), but the effect varied greatly between individual knives. Thus, under commercial conditions, the antibacterial effect of UV-C for the decontamination of knives is affected by the presence of additional contaminations like blood or fat. The adequate cleaning of the knives prior to UV-C decontamination is therefore of central importance.

This study determined the variability in population uniformity of an applied mixture of attenuated E. coli O157:H7 (attEcO157) on spinach leaves as impacted by sampling mass and detection technique over spatial and temporal conditions. Opportunistically, the survival and distribution of naturally contaminating pathogenic E. coli O157:H7 (EcO157), in a single packaged lot following commercial postharvest handling and washing, was also evaluated. From the main study outcomes, differences in the applied inoculum dose of 100-fold, resulted in indistinguishable population densities of approximately Log 1.1 CFU g-1 by 14 days post-inoculation (DPI). Composite leaf samples of 150 g and the inclusion of the spinach petiole resulted in the greatest numerical sensitivity of detection of attEcO157 when compared to 25 and 150 g samples without petioles (P < 0.05). Differences in population density and protected-site survival and potential leaf internalization were observed between growing seasons and locations in California (P < 0.05). A Double Weibull model best described and identified two distinct populations with different inactivation rates of the inoculated attEcO157. Linear die-off rates varied between 0.14 and 0.29 Log/Day irrespective of location. Detection of EcO157- stx1-negative and stx2-positive, resulting from a natural contamination event, was observed in 11 of 26 quarantined commercial units of washed spinach by applying the 150 g sample mass protocol. The capacity to detect EcO157 varied between commercial test kits and non-commercial qPCR. Our findings suggest the need for modifications to routine pathogen sampling protocols employed for lot acceptance of spinach and other leafy greens.

This article describes the hidden natural chemical contaminants present in a unique desert environment and their health consequences on ancient populations. Currently, millions of people are affected worldwide by toxic elements such as arsenic. Using data gathered from Atacama Desert mummies, we discuss long-term exposure and biocultural adaptation to toxic elements. The rivers that bring life to the Atacama Desert are paradoxically laden with arsenic and other minerals that are invisible and tasteless. High intake of these toxic elements results in severe health and behavioral problems, and even death. We demonstrate that Inca colonies, from Camarones 9 site, were significantly affected by chemical contaminants in their food and water. It appears however, some modern-day Andean populations resist the elevated levels of arsenic exposure as a result of positive selection mediated via the arsenic methyltransferase enzyme and display more tolerance to high chemical doses. This article further debate the effects of natural pollution and biocultural adaptation of past populations.

The water-rock interaction is discussed in this study for some Central Apennine aquifers and their relative springs, where the geological and hydrogeological setting is potentially responsible for hydrocarbon contamination. The contamination is related to the presence of limestone formations with high organic content that are connected to the genesis of hydrocarbons in the Central-Southern Apennines. Thanks to a multidisciplinary approach based on a seasonal monitoring of hydrogeological, hydrogeochemical, organic chemical, and isotopic variables, and to a detailed geological analysis, it was possible to demonstrate that the bituminous schists within the bituminous dolomite formation (a Triassic Formation presents in the Gran Sasso acquifer), the bituminous intercalations within the Bolognano Formation (an Olocenic calcareous Formation in the Majella acquifer), and the petroleum-saturated rocks of the Bolognano Formation (in the Morrone acquifer) are all able to leach hydrocarbons into groundwater. The results suggest that more detailed studies are required for areas where lithologies with fossil organic components are present. Insights should further investigate the interaction between groundwater and rocks in terms of organic compounds as well as inorganic compounds. In particular, the study also suggests that the supplementary quantification of hydrocarbon compounds in bituminous rock and the leaching tests are analyses that provide reliable results. From the normative point of view, the results of the study can be useful when dealing with hydrocarbon contamination resulting from anthropogenic activities within catchments where formations with high concentration of organic matter are present. In these cases, it will possible to assess the natural background concentrations and review the threshold values upwards.

This study assessed the growth of Listeria monocytogenes in milkshakes made using the process-contaminated ice cream associated with a listeriosis outbreak in comparison to milkshakes made with artificially contaminated ice cream. For all temperatures, growth kinetics including growth rates, lag phases, maximum populations, and population increases were determined for the naturally and artificially derived contaminants at 5, 10, 15, and 25°C storage for 144 h. The artificially inoculated L. monocytogenes presented lower growth rates and shorter lag phases than the naturally contaminated populations at all temperatures except for 5°C, where the reverse was observed. At 25°C, lag phases of the naturally and artificially contaminated L. monocytogenes were 11.6 and 7.8 h, respectively. The highest increase in population was observed for the artificially inoculated pathogen at 15°C after 96 h (6.16 log CFU/mL) of storage. Growth models for both contamination states in milkshakes were determined. In addition, this study evaluated the antimicrobial effectiveness of flavoring agents, including strawberry, chocolate and mint, on the growth of the pathogen in milkshakes during 10°C storage. All flavor additions resulted in decreased growth rates of L. monocytogenes for both contamination states. The addition of chocolate and mint flavoring also resulted in significantly longer lag phases for both contamination states. This study provides insight into the differences in growth between naturally and artificially contaminated L. monocytogenes in a food product.

Veterinary drugs containing synthetic anabolic steroid and nitroimidazole active agents are not allowed for their applications in livestock of the European Union (EU). This paper presents analyses of twelve selected steroids and six nitroimidazole antibiotics at low levels (1.56µg/L-4.95µg/L and 0.17µg/kg-2.14µg/kg, respectively) in body fluids and egg incurred samples. Analyses involved clean-up procedures, high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separation, and tandem mass spectrometric screening and confirmatory methods. Target steroids and nitroimidazoles in samples were cleaned by two independent supported liquid extraction and solid phase extraction procedures. Separation of the selected compounds was conducted on Kinetex XB C-18 HPLC column using gradient elution. The screening methods utilised supported liquid extraction that enabled fast and cost effective clean-up. The confirmatory methods were improved by extending the number of matrices and compounds, and by introducing an isotope dilution mass spectrometry for nitroimidazoles. The new methods were validated according to the recommendation of the European Union Reference Laboratories and the performance characteristics evaluated met fully the criteria. The methods were applied to incurred samples in the proficiency tests. The obtained results of Z-scores demonstrated the applicability of developed protocols of the methods to real samples. The confirmatory methods were applied to the national monitoring program and natural contamination of prednisolone could be detected in urine at low concentration in few samples.

The dynamics of natural contamination by Al and Fe colloids in volcanic aquifers of central-southern Italy were investigated. Localized perched aquifers, and their relative discharges, are strongly affected by the presence of massive suspended solids, which confer a white-lacteous coloration to the water. This phenomenon occasionally caused the interruption of water distribution due to the exceeding of Al and Fe concentrations in aquifers exploited for human supply. The cause was ascribed to water seepage from perched aquifers. Water discharges affected by such contamination was investigated for the Rocca Ripesena area (north-eastern sector of Vulsini Volcanic District) and for the Rianale Stream Valley (Roccamonfina Volcanic Complex). Hydrogeological survey of both areas confirmed the presence of perched aquifers not previously considered due to their low productivity. Pluviometric data and chemical parameters were periodically monitored. Water mineralization decreased with increasing rainfall, conversely Al and Fe concentrations increased. Statistical analysis confirmed the dependence of all the chemical variables on rock leaching, with the sole exception of Al and Fe which were imputed to colloids mobilization from local, strongly pedogenized pyroclastic material. The similarities in hydrogeological settings and mobilization dynamics in both areas suggest that the Al and Fe colloidal contamination should be more abundant than currently known in quaternary volcanic areas.

The aim of this work was to study the microbiological and physico-chemical changes throughout three cheesemaking replicates of Italian Formaggelle di capra cheese made from raw goat milk. Therefore, during the process, three samples of milk, curd and cheese at 3, 7, 11, 14, 21 and 30 days of ripening old cheese were taken from three cheesemaking replicates. The average of total mesophilic bacteria and Enterobacteriaceae count in raw milk was 5.27±0.57 and 3.8±1.02 Log cfu/mL, respectively. Lactic acid bacteria was the predominant bacterial group during the process, and they developed in different ways in each of the media used (M17 and MRS agar). Variability of microbial concentrations was observed between three cheesemaking replicates. A correlation between the presence of higher levels of Enterobacteriaceae in milk and the presence of other contaminants bacteria such as Escherichia coli ß-glucuronidase-positive and coagulase-positive staphylococci was observed. In cheesemaking replicate n. 2, E. coli level was 5.07±0.03 Log cfu/mL and increased by about 1 log until the last week of ripening, when the level decreased to 5.69±0.2 Log cfu/mL. The milk used for the cheesemaking replicate n. 2 was found to be contaminated also by coagulase-positive staphylococci (3.18±0.06 Log cfu/mL), but the behaviour of this group appeared to be very variable. In this study a first step of process control and microbial groups study was performed and the cheesemaking process was registered in the website www.ars-alimentaria.it, the Italian site supported by the Italian Board of Health.

Raw salmon is commonly used in sushi and sashimi, indicating that fresh salmon may be considered as a ready-to-eat product. Listeria monocytogenes is occasionally present in fresh salmon, but studies of prevalence and growth of the bacterium in this matrix have been few. In the present study, salmon from a company where L. monocytogenes is present in low levels has been investigated in order to develop performance objectives for L. monocytogenes in fresh salmon intended for use in ready-to-eat products as sushi and sashimi. According to the European Food Law, the maximum level of L. monocytogenes on the last day of shelf life is 100 cfu/g. The variations between and within eight batches have been determined, and the results were used to estimate limit values for L. monocytogenes in salmon and develop a tentative sampling plan for the processing day. Various time-temperature scenarios for storage until the fish is consumed as sushi, sashimi or native fillets have been taken into account. The results indicate that limit values in the range from 0.5 to 10 cfu/g are sufficient to ensure that the regulatory limit of <100 cfu/g of L. monocytogenes on the last day of shelf life is not exceeded, provided that the recommended time-temperature conditions are respected. For instance, if the fish is intended for processing into sushi within one week of storage at 4°C after filleting, no samples should have higher levels of L. monocytogenes than 2 cfu/g at the day of filleting.

Understanding urban soil geochemistry is a challenging task because of the complicated layering of the urban landscape and the profound impact of large cities on the chemical dispersion of harmful trace elements. A systematic geochemical soil survey was performed across Greater Athens and Piraeus, Greece. Surface soil samples (0-10cm) were collected from 238 sampling sites on a regular 1×1km grid and were digested by a HNO3-HCl-HClO4-HF mixture. A combination of multivariate statistics and Geographical Information System approaches was applied for discriminating natural from anthropogenic sources using 4 major elements, 9 trace metals, and 2 metalloids. Based on these analyses the lack of heavy industry in Athens was demonstrated by the influence of geology on the local soil chemistry with this accounting for 49% of the variability in the major elements, as well as Cr, Ni, Co, and possibly As (median values of 102, 141, 16 and 24mg kg(-1) respectively). The contribution to soil chemistry of classical urban contaminants including Pb, Cu, Zn, Sn, Sb, and Cd (medians of 45, 39, 98, 3.6, 1.7 and 0.3mg kg(-1) respectively) was also observed; significant correlations were identified between concentrations and urbanization indicators, including vehicular traffic, urban land use, population density, and timing of urbanization. Analysis of soil heterogeneity and spatial variability of soil composition in the Greater Athens and Piraeus area provided a representation of the extent of anthropogenic modifications on natural element loadings. The concentrations of Ni, Cr, and As were relatively high compared to those in other cities around the world, and further investigation should characterize and evaluate their geochemical reactivity.

Anomalous concentrations of hexavalent chromium have been detected in ground-water of the Adamantina Aquifer inat least 54 municipalities located in the northwestern region of the State of São Paulo, southeast Brazil, occasionallyexceeding the permitted limit for human consumption (0.05 mg.L-1). An investigation was conducted in the municipality of Urânia, where the highest concentrations of chromium were detected regionally. It was defined that the originof this contamination is natural, since high concentrations of chromium were detected in aquifer sandstones (averageof 221 ppm) and also in pyroxenes (6000 ppm), one of the main heavy minerals found in the sediments. Besides, noother possible diffuse or point sources of contamination were observed in the study area. Stratification of ground-waterquality was observed and the highest concentrations of Cr6+ were detected at the base of the aquifer (0.12 mg.L-1),where ground-water shows elevated values for redox potential (472.5 mV) and pH (8.61). The origin of Cr6+ in water may be associated with the weathering of pyroxene (augite), followed by the oxidation of Cr3+ by manganese oxides. The highest concentrations of Cr6+ are probably related to desorption reactions, due to the anomalous alkaline pHfound in ground-water at the base of the aquifer.


Concentrações anômalas de cromo hexavalente foram detectadas em águas subterrâneas do Aqüífero Adamantina em pelo menos 54 municipalidades localizadas na região noroeste do Estado de São Paulo, sudeste do Brasil, algumas vezes ultrapassando o limite máximo permitido para consumo humano (0,05 mg.L-1). Um estudo foi realizado no município de Urânia, onde as mais elevadas concentrações de cromo da região foram detectadas. A origem da contaminação foi definida como natural, pois foram detectadas concentrações de cromonos arenitos do aqüífero (média 221 ppm) e em piroxênios (6000 ppm), um dos principais minerais pesados encontrados nos sedimentos. Além disso, não foram observadas outras possíveis fontes de contaminação difusas ou pontuais naárea de estudo. Uma estratificação da qualidade da água no aqüífero foi observada e as mais elevadas concentrações de Cr6+ foram detectadas na base do aqüífero (0,12 mg.L-1), onde as águas subterrâneas apresentam valores elevados de potencial redox (Eh = 472,5 mV) e de pH (8,61). A origem do Cr6+ na água deve estar associada com o intemperismo do piroxênio (augita), seguida da oxidação do Cr3+ pelos óxidos de manganês. As maiores concentrações de Cr6+ estão provavelmente ligadas com reações de desorção, devido ao pH anomalamentealcalino da água subterrânea na base do aqüífero.

El objetivo de la investigación fue determinar la presencia de fluoruros de aguas procedentes de vertientes y pozos cavados en la localidad de Rinconadillas de la Puna Jujeña. Dicha región fue seleccionada debido a que se quería corroborar la presencia de fluoruros, encontrados en la década del ‘80 por el organismo Agua Potable de la provincia de Jujuy, como así también ver si existía variación en la concentración de este contaminante natural en el transcurso del tiempo. La evaluación se realizó sobre 11 muestras de agua de vertientes y de pozos, que representan la totalidad de las fuentes en toda la localidad de Rinconadillas y alrededores. Otras 9 muestras fueron tomadas de Purmamarca, Tumbaya, Volcán, San Salvador de Jujuy y Palpalá, localidades que se alejan de Rinconadillas. Estas muestras consideradas testigos fueron seleccionadas sabiendo que, en estudios realizados anteriormente, no contenían fluoruros. De la totalidad de las muestras recolectadas en Rinconadillas, el 82 % superó el límite máximo recomendado por el Código Alimentario Argentino mientras que menos del 10% se encontraron por debajo de lo reglamentado. Las concentraciones de esta zona fueron superiores a las registradas en las muestras tomadas como referencias, determinándose diferencias significativas entre ambos grupos (p = 0,001). De las muestras testigos sólo una superó el límite superior recomendado por el Código Alimentario Argentino. Algunas de las concentraciones determinadas en el presente estudio fueron mayores a los registros de 15 años atrás y podrían indicar una variación creciente en el tiempo. Se ha observado que la población se ha dispersado en las cercanías a Rinconadillas con nuevas fuentes de aguas de bebida, que sólo reciben una eventual cloración. Se ha observado también en la población del lugar una marcada fluorosis dentalque debería ser evaluada clínica y epidemiológicamente.


The aim of this study was to determine the presence of fluorides in groundwaters from springs and wells belonging to Rinconadillas, a small town located in “La Puna” in the Province of Jujuy. This region was selected because fluoride has been detected during the '80 by Jujuy Water Agency and a comparative study of fluoride levels would provide information about the variation of concentrations of this “natural” contaminant along the time. In “La Puna” the study was conducted on eleven samples of groundwaters from springs and wells from Rinconadilllas and its surroundings. Nine further samples were obtained in Purmamarca, Tumbaya, Volcán, San Salvador de Jujuy and Palpalá, all ofthem far from Rinconadillas. Those samples were selected as prior studies determined that water from such towns does not contain fluoride. Eighty two percent of all the samples collected in Rinconadillas exceeded fluoride limits stated by Argentine Legislation (AL), while less than ten percent of the samples are below the stated values. Fluoride levels from this area were higher than the levels for the reference samples. For the blank samples, only one exceeds the maximum allowed level. Fluoride levels found in this study were higher than those coming from samples that have been analyzed 15 years ago indicating that fluoride levels in waters are increasing. It has also been observed that the population has moved to Rinconadillas surroundings having a drinking water form newsource that is only eventually chlorinated. A remarkable dental fluorosis is observed in the population, which should be clinically and epidemiologically assessed.
