Background: Workers are exposed to several risks in academic laboratories due to the presence of potentially hazardous substances. The main objective of this study was to assess the prevalence of accident occurrence and associated risk factors among laboratory workers at the scientific laboratories of the public university in Lebanon and the impact of safety measures training and availability. Methods: In this observational study, a survey was conducted for one year in scientific laboratories at faculties of the public university. Results: Among the participants (N = 220), 45.0% have had accidents; the main cause was exposure to chemicals (73.7%) and more specifically by inhalation (45.4%). Females (85.9%) were more exposed to accidents than males. Laboratory workers with a master's degree, a full-time schedule, and more than ten years of experience were significantly more exposed to accidents (p < 0.05). A significant association was found between accident occurrence and training on management of hazardous products (p = 0.044), risks related to workplace (p = 0.030), eyewash and emergency shower (p < 0.001), first aid (p = 0.012), and facial protection availability (p = 0.019). In spite of the lack of safety culture and efficient training on laboratory safety, participants have shown a very good perception regarding safety measures to be applied in case of work accidents. Conclusion: Based on our findings, the prevalence of accident occurrence is elevated among lab workers at the public university. The impact of regular training on laboratory safety preventive measures is of great importance to ensure the efficiency of occupational health and safety in scientific laboratories.

Inuit living in the Arctic are exposed to elevated levels of environmental contaminants primarily due to long-range atmospheric transport. Blood sampling and contaminant biomonitoring was conducted as part of the International Polar Year Inuit Health Survey in 2007-2008. The body burden of metals (e.g. Cd, Pb) and persistent organic pollutants (e.g. PCBs, DDT & DDE, toxaphene, chlordane, PBDEs) were measured for Inuit participants (n=2172) from 36 communities in Nunavut, Nunatsiavut, and the Inuvialuit Settlement Region, in Canada. The geometric mean of blood concentrations for Cd, Pb, PCBs, DDE & DDT, toxaphene, and chlordane were higher than those in the Canadian general population. A total of 9% of study participants exceeded the intervention guideline of 100µgL(-1) for Pb, 11% of participants exceeded the trigger guideline of 5µgL(-1) for Cd, and 1% exceeded the intervention guideline of 100µgL(-1) for PCBs. Also, 3% of women of child-bearing age exceeded blood Pb of 100µgL(-1) while 28% of women of child-bearing age exceeded 5µgL(-1) of PCBs. This work showed that most Inuit Health Survey participants were below blood contaminant guidelines set by Health Canada but that metal and POP body burdens commonly exceed exposures observed in the general population of Canada.

Cellular functions are usually associated with the activity of proteins and nucleic acids. Recent studies have shown that lipids modulate the localization and activity of key membrane-associated signal transduction proteins, thus regulating the cell's physiology. Membrane Lipid Therapy aims to reverse cell dysfunctions (i.e., diseases) by modulating the activity of membrane signaling proteins through regulation of the lipid bilayer structure. The present work shows the ability of a series of 2-hydroxyfatty acid (2OHFA) derivatives, varying in the acyl chain length and degree of unsaturation, to regulate the membrane lipid structure. These molecules have shown greater therapeutic potential than their natural non-hydroxylated counterparts. We demonstrated that both 2OHFA and natural FAs induced reorganization of lipid domains in model membranes of POPC:SM:PE:Cho, modulating the liquid-ordered/liquid-disordered structures ratio and the microdomain lipid composition. Fluorescence spectroscopy, confocal microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and differential detergent solubilization experiments showed a destabilization of the membranes upon addition of the 2OHFAs and FAs which correlated with the observed disordering effect. The changes produced by these synthetic fatty acids on the lipid structure may constitute part of their mechanism of action, leading to changes in the localization/activity of membrane proteins involved in signaling cascades, and therefore modulating cell responses.
