Background/Objectives: In regions of Africa with a high prevalence of malaria, pregnant women in their first or second trimester should be administered intermittent preventive treatment in pregnancy (IPTp). However, infants may contract malaria despite the IPTp therapy that their mothers have received. The objective of the present investigation was to assess the symptoms and various treatments for neonatal malaria. Methods: Entropy weight and TOPSIS were used to achieve the study goal. The TOPSIS multi-attribute decision-making system was used to assess newborn malaria symptoms and select the optimal treatment, even for mothers receiving IPTp medication during pregnancy. The entropy weight approach calculated TOPSIS attribute weights. The present research used UNICEF data for 14 African nations in 2023. Results: The results indicated that neonates whose mothers received IPTp therapy ultimately contracted malaria, with diarrhea being the primary symptom. It is important to note that health providers administer a combination of zinc and oral rehydration solution (ORS) to infants as the most effective treatment for malaria symptoms, thereby abandoning the first-line treatment for malaria, artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT). Conclusions: The most effective treatment for neonatal malaria is a combination of zinc and ORS, although less than half of children in Africa have access to ORS. Therefore, the findings of this study may encourage African countries to prioritize co-pack therapy in their procurement and supply, healthcare provider training, and expenditures. This therapy will also help alleviate the symptoms of malaria in neonates.

BACKGROUND: Prospective research is lacking on the utility of plucked hair outer root sheath direct immunofluorescence (ORS DIF) in the prediction of relapse in pemphigus vulgaris (PV) and the correlation of ORS DIF positivity with serum desmoglein antibody titers. METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study enrolling 80 PV patients in complete clinical remission at a tertiary care center in North India. Study participants underwent ORS DIF at baseline, which was repeated every 3 months. Skin biopsy DIF was done at study inclusion, repeated at 3 months, and upon clinical relapse. An antidesmoglein antibody titer was assessed concurrently with ORS DIF in a subset of patients. Patients on adjuvant therapy had their adjuvant therapy withdrawn either at the initial visit, at 3 months, or at a 6-month follow-up. Our objectives were to determine the association between positive ORS DIF and clinical relapse, the correlation between positive ORS DIF and skin biopsy DIF, and between positive ORS DIF and positive antidesmoglein antibody titers (when concurrently done). RESULTS: Twenty-two patients (27.5%) had a clinical relapse. Baseline immunological markers significantly associated with relapse are ORS DIF positivity with IgG (16/36 [45.44%] P = 0.005) and C3 (12/29 [41.37%] P = 0.047) and greater intensity of baseline IgG and C3 positivity in ORS DIF (IgG, P = 0.002; C3, P = 0.033). Notably, a significant correlation was observed between baseline positive ORS DIF and skin biopsy DIF (IgG, ρ = 0.695; C3, ρ = 0.498). Positive ORS DIF strongly correlated with positive anti-Dsg3 antibody titers (φs = 0.815; P < 0.01). Early withdrawal of adjuvant immunosuppressant (within 3 months) (P = 0.007) and positive ORS DIF were also associated with relapse (P = 0.017). CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE: ORS DIF is a reliable predictor of PV clinical relapse and demonstrated robust correlations with skin biopsy DIF and antidesmoglein antibody titers. Periodic assessment of ORS DIF aids in determining new-onset positivity that heralds clinical relapse.

The purpose of the present study is to evaluate whether an online reference system (ORS, STATdx Elsevier, Amsterdam, Netherlands) impacts finding the histologically confirmed diagnosis of rare or atypical abdominal tumors and lesions in radiologic imaging. In total, 101 patients with rare tumor entities or lesions and atypical manifestations of common tumors were enrolled retrospectively. Blinded readings were performed by four radiologists with varying levels of experience, who reported on: (a) correct diagnosis (CD), (b) time needed to find the diagnosis, and (c) diagnostic confidence, initially without followed by the assistance of the ORS. The experienced reader (3 years of experience post-residency, CD 49.5%), as well as the advanced reader with 1 year of experience post-residency (CD 43.6%), and a resident with 5 years of experience (CD 46.5%) made the correct diagnosis more frequently compared to the less experienced reader (CD 25.7%). A significant improvement in making the correct diagnosis was only achieved by the advanced reader, the resident with 5 years of experience (CD with ORS 58.4%; p < 0.001). The advanced reader with 1 year of experience post-residency improved slightly (CD ORS 47.5%). The experienced reader (CD ORS 50.5%) and the less experienced reader (CD ORS 27.7%) did not improve significantly. The overall subjective confidence increased significantly when ORS was used (3.2 ± 0.9 vs. 3.8 ± 0.9; p < 0.001). While the ORS had a positive impact on making the correct diagnosis throughout all readers, it favored radiologists with more clinical experience rather than inexperienced residents. Moreover, the ORS increased the diagnostic confidence of all radiologists significantly. In conclusion, the ORS had no significant impact on the diagnosis of rare or atypical abdominal tumors and lesions except for one reader. The greatest benefit is the increase in diagnostic confidence.

Background: Diarrhoeal disease poses a significant global health challenge, especially in children under three years old. Despite the effectiveness of oral rehydration therapy (ORT), its adoption remains low. Glucose-based ORS (GORS) is the standard, but novel formulations like glucose-free amino acid-based VS002A have emerged as potential alternatives. This study aimed to compare the safety and efficacy of VS002A against the standard WHO-ORS in treating non-cholera acute watery diarrhoea in children. Methods: A triple-blind, randomized trial enrolled 310 male infants and children aged 6-36 months, who were assigned to receive WHO-ORS or VS002A over a 16-month period, from June 2021 to September 2022. Both groups received standard of care, including zinc supplementation. The Primary study outcome measured was the duration of diarrhoea. Secondary outcomes included stool output, treatment failure and adverse events. Exploratory endpoints included urinary output, body weight changes, blood biochemistry, stool microbiology and gut health biomarkers. Findings: Both VS002A and WHO-ORS were well-tolerated with a low adverse event rate. While not different statistically (p = 0.10), duration of diarrhoea was shorter in children treated with VS002A vs. WHO-ORS (65.4 h vs. 72.6 h). Similarly, stool output was also lower vs. WHO-ORS in children treated with VS002A, though not statistically different (p = 0.40). Serum citrulline levels, an indicator of gut health, were higher in the VS002A group at 24 h suggesting a potential protective effect (p = 0.06). Interpretation: The findings of this study support the non-inferiority of VS002A, a glucose-free amino acid-based ORS compared to the WHO-ORS standard of care. VS002A was shown to be safe and effective in treating non-cholera acute watery diarrhoea in young children. VS002A may offer advantages in pathogen-driven diarrhoea, supported by trends toward a lower duration of diarrhoea and stool output within the per protocol group. Furthermore, individuals with prolonged diarrhoea, severe malnutrition, environmental enteric dysfunction or have issues with obesity or insulin resistance, could benefit from a glucose-free ORS. This research contributes to addressing the persistent challenge of childhood diarrhoea by presenting an alternative glucose-free ORS formulation with potential advantages in select scenarios, offering a promising avenue for improving paediatric diarrhoea management worldwide. INTRODUCTION: Even though childhood diarrhea is treated with a simple treatment solution, it continues to be one of the leading causes of under-five child mortality and malnutrition globally. In resource-limited settings such as Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), the combination of oral rehydration salts (ORS) and zinc is regarded as an effective treatment for diarrhea; however, its utilization is very low. The purpose of this study was to determine the proportion and associated factors of co-utilization of ORS and zinc among under-five children with diarrhea in SSA. METHODS: The proportion and associated factors of co-utilization of ORS and zinc among under-five children with diarrhea in SSA were determined using secondary data analysis of recent Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS) of 35 SSA countries. The study included a total of 44,341 under-five children with diarrhea in weighted samples. A generalized linear mixed-effects model with robust error variance was used. For the variables included in the final model, adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated. A model with the lowest deviance value were considered as the best-fitted model. RESULT: The pooled proportion of co-utilization of ORS and zinc for the treatment of diarrhea among under five children in SSA countries was 43.58% with a 95% CI (43.15%, 44.01%). Sex of the child, maternal age, residence, maternal educational and employment status, wealth index, media exposure, perceived distance to health facility and insurance coverage were statistically significant determinants of ORS and Zinc co-utilization for treating diarrhea among under five children in SSA. CONCLUSION: Only less than half of under-five children with diarrhea in SSA were treated with a combination of ORS and zinc. Thus, strengthening information dissemination through mass media, and community-level health education programs are important to scale up the utilization of the recommended combination treatment. Furthermore, increasing health insurance coverage, and establishing strategies to address the community with difficulty in accessing health facilities is also crucial in improving the use of the treatment.

Objectives: Opioid use disorder (OUD)-associated overdose deaths have reached epidemic proportions worldwide. An important driving force for relapse is anxiety associated with opioid withdrawal. We hypothesized that our new technology, termed heterodyned whole-body vibration (HWBV) would ameliorate anxiety associated with OUD. Methods: Using a randomized, placebo (sham)-controlled, double-blind study design in an NIH-sponsored Phase 1 trial, we evaluated 60 male and 26 female participants diagnosed with OUD and undergoing treatment at pain and rehabilitation clinics. We utilized the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A) and a daily visual analog scale anxiety rating (1-10) to evaluate anxiety. Subjects were treated for 10 min 5X/week for 4 weeks with either sham vibration (no interferential beat or harmonics) or HWBV (beats and harmonics). The participants also completed a neuropsychological test battery at intake and discharge. Results: In OUD subjects with moderate anxiety, there was a significant improvement in daily anxiety scores in the HWBV group compared to the sham treatment group (p=3.41 × 10-7). HAM-A scores in OUD participants at intake showed moderate levels of anxiety in OUD participants (HWBV group: 15.9 ± 1.6; Sham group: 17.8 ± 1.6) and progressively improved in both groups at discharge, but improvement was greater in the HWBV group (p=1.37 × 10-3). Furthermore, three indices of neuropsychological testing (mental rotations, spatial planning, and response inhibition) were significantly improved by HWBV treatment. Conclusions: These findings support HWBV as a novel, non-invasive, non-pharmacological treatment for anxiety associated with OUD.

Neural activity influences every aspect of nervous system development. In olfactory systems, sensory neurons expressing the same odorant receptor project their axons to stereotypically positioned glomeruli, forming a spatial map of odorant receptors in the olfactory bulb. As individual odors activate unique combinations of glomeruli, this map forms the basis for encoding olfactory information. The establishment of this stereotypical olfactory map requires coordinated regulation of axon guidance molecules instructed by spontaneous activity. Recent studies show that sensory experiences also modify innervation patterns in the olfactory bulb, especially during a critical period of the olfactory system development. This review examines evidence in the field to suggest potential mechanisms by which various aspects of neural activity regulate axon targeting. We also discuss the precise functions served by neural plasticity during the critical period.

Background: Diarrhea is the second leading cause of death in under 5 children of Ethiopia. Millions of young lives could be saved if mothers know and practice the three rules of diarrhea management: giving extra fluid (particularly oral rehydration salt [ORS]), zinc, and giving additional food during diarrhea illness. Aim: The objective of this study was to determine mothers'/caregivers' Knowledge, Practice, and associated factors toward ORS with zinc to treat diarrhea among under 5 children in Burayu town, Oromia Region, Ethiopia, 2022. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 422 study participants from September 25 to October 10, 2022; in Burayu town, Ethiopia. Systematic random sampling technique was used to enroll study subjects from two randomly selected kebeles. Interviewer-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data. Data were entered into Epi-info version 3.5.1 and exported to SPSS Version 21 for analysis. Binary and multivariable logistic regression was done to identify factors associated with knowledge and practice of ORS with zinc at p < 0.05% and 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: The findings showed that 59% and 52% of the respondents had good knowledge and practice toward ORS with zinc, respectively. Being housewives (adjusted odds ratio, AOR = 0.407, 95% CI: [0.195, 0.848]), primary education (AOR = 3.246, 95% CI: [1.614, 6.530]), income of >4000 (AOR = 5.132, 95% CI: [1.947, 13.524]), health seeking behavior (AOR = 0.369, 95% CI: [0.139, 0.979]), being divorced (AOR = 0.275, 95% CI: [0.09,0.842]) were found to be significantly associated with knowledge toward management of diarrhea with ORS and zinc. Housewives in occupation (AOR = 0.084, 95% CI: [0.029, 0.243]), secondary and above education (AOR = 6.26: 95% CI: [1.51, 25.86]), health seeking behavior (AOR = 6.885, 95% CI: [2.29, 20.67]), having good knowledge of ORS and zinc (AOR = 22.14, 95% CI: [8.44, 58.07]) were found to be significantly associated with practice of managing diarrhea with ORS and zinc. Conclusion: This study revealed low level of knowledge and practice of caregivers toward ORS with zinc. The more mothers/caregivers are knowledgeable, the more they are active to practice the use of ORS with zinc. Thus, health education and awareness creation for the mothers/caregivers on management of diarrhea is very crucial. Special attention should be given to enhancing income for mothers/caregivers.

Chemoreceptors play a crucial role in assisting bacterial sensing and response to environmental stimuli. Genome analysis of Azorhizobium caulinodans ORS571 revealed the presence of 43 putative chemoreceptors, but their biological functions remain largely unknown. In this study, we identified the chemoreceptor AmaP (methyl-accepting protein of A. caulinodans), characterized by the presence of the CHASE3 domain and exhibited a notable response to acetoin. Thus, we investigated the effect of acetoin sensing on its symbiotic association with the host. Our findings uncovered a compelling role for acetoin as a key player in enhancing various facets of A. caulinodans ORS571's performance including biofilm formation, colonization, and nodulation abilities. Notably, acetoin bolstered A. caulinodans ORS571's efficacy in promoting the growth of S. rostrata, even under moderate salt stress conditions. This study not only broadens our understanding of the AmaP protein with its distinctive CHASE3 domain but also highlights the promising potential of acetoin in fortifying the symbiotic relationship between A. caulinodans and Sesbania rostrata.

Introduction: Diarrhea is the second leading cause of death among under-five children. Prescription review by the authorities of the health facilities every month for the improvement of the quality of prescription writing of Medical practitioners is very essentials. With this background, the present study was conducted to assess the prescription patterns of healthcare providers for under-five diarrhea cases and to study the factors responsible for nonadherence to protocol of prescription patterns. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the health facilities of two aspirational districts of Odisha. All secondary- and tertiary-level health institutions with 2-3 randomly selected PHCs of that blocks of the two districts were the study units. Mixed methods were used for data collection. Primary data were collected by in-depth interview of doctor and pharmacist. Secondary data were collected by review of records such as OPD ticket, IPD ticket, OPD register, dispensing register, and stock registers. Results: Of the 64 health facilities visited, a total of 516 prescriptions [217 (42%)] scanned/carbon copy of OPD ticket, 238 (46%) data from register on drug prescription, and 61 (11.8%) IPD record data were collected. Duration of diarrhea illness was not mentioned in any of the prescriptions which is important criteria for classifying the type of diarrhea and treatment. Signs of dehydration and degree of dehydration were mentioned in very few prescriptions of both the district. For the treatment of diarrhea cases, 2 to 4 medicines were prescribed in majority of 146 (67.3%), followed by more than four medicines in 38 (17.5%) prescriptions, and less than two medicines were prescribed in 33 (15.2%) cases. All prescriptions from MCH and SDH had ORS and zinc. Though all of them knew about the management protocol as per IMNCI, to be on the safe onside they used to prescribe more medicines to under-five diarrhea cases. None had the knowledge on five types of management plan. Conclusion: For under-five diarrhea cases, care should be taken to write the detail examination finding, weight of the child, associated comorbid condition, and advice on feeding in the prescription.

To meet the 2030 goal to end all types of malnutrition, thoroughly investigating and addressing context-specific factors of undernutrition is crucial. Therefore, this study assessed the prevalence of undernutrition and associated factors among children aged 6-23 months in South-East Ethiopia. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 580 randomly sampled mother-child pairs in February 2022. Socio-demographic, dietary intake, household food security (HFS), maternal knowledge and practices of child feeding, and the child's weight and height data were collected. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was done. The prevalence of stunted, wasted, and underweight children was 32â 1, 7, and 9 %, respectively. Being male (AOR = 1â 75), not using the growth monitoring and promotion (GMP) service (AOR = 1â 50), household food insecurity (HFI) (AOR = 1â 67), lack of improved water (AOR = 2â 26), and bottle-feeding (AOR = 1â 54) were significantly associated with stunting. Being male (AOR = 3â 02), having low maternal knowledge on child-feeding practices (AOR = 3â 89), not listening to the radio/television (AOR = 3â 69), having a history of fever (AOR = 3â 39), bottle-feeding (AOR = 3â 58), and HFI (AOR = 3â 77) were significantly predicted wasting. Being male (AOR = 3â 44), not using GMP service (AOR = 2â 00), having a history of fever (AOR = 4â 24), lack of knowledge on optimal breastfeeding duration (AOR = 3â 58), low maternal knowledge on child feeding (AOR = 2â 21), HFI (AOR = 2â 04), and lack of improved water (AOR = 3â 00) showed significant association with underweight. In conclusion, stunting is alarmingly common while wasting and underweight are sub-optimal. Prevention of infectious disease, providing basic education for fathers, ensuring HFS; enhancing media access, maternal knowledge about IYCFP and improving water access; and GMP service utilisation are crucial to improve child nutrition.

Objective: Preoperative oral rehydration solution (ORS) supplementation offers wide postoperative benefits, but its role in reducing post-spinal myocardial ischaemia is uncertain. We evaluated this aspect in elective lower limb orthopaedic surgeries and compared it to conventional preoperative fasting. Methods: Prospectively, we randomised 126 patients aged >60 years into two groups: (A) received reconstituted ORS (1000 mL) during the overnight preoperative fasting, continued up to 2 hrs prior to spinal anaesthesia (SA) induction; (B) kept on conventional overnight preoperative fasting. This study evaluated electrocardiographic ischaemic changes at 2, 5, 10, 15, and 30 minutes after SA induction. Results: In total, 27 patients (group A: 7; group B: 20) developed transient electrocardiographic ischaemic changes. On intergroup comparison, group B had a significantly higher incidence at all time points, with highest statistical levels at 5- and 10-minutes ((P < 0.001). The receiver operating characteristic curve at a threshold fasting duration (fluids) of >3 hours, had an area-under-curve of 0.74 to predict such changes within 30 minutes of SA induction (sensitivity 96.30%, specificity 55.56%, accuracy 64.29%, odds ratio 32.50, relative risk 20.80, (P < 0.001). Post-spinal hemodynamic changes were higher in group B than in A; hypotension and tachycardia were statistically significant ((P=0.020). The pleth variability index was significantly higher ((P < 0.001), while perfusion index was significantly lower (P < 0.001) in group B at all time points. Conclusion: Preoperative ORS supplementation significantly reduced post-spinal transient ischaemic electrocardiographic changes in elderly patients than conventional overnight fasting.

The severity of the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and its effects remain unpredictable. Certain factors, such as obesity, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes mellitus, may increase the severity of the disease. Rheumatology experts suggest that patients with active autoimmune conditions and controlled autoimmune diseases on immunosuppressive therapy may be at higher risk of developing severe COVID-19. In this retrospective observational study, we aimed to examine the patterns of COVID-19 in patients with underlying rheumatological diseases and their association with disease severity and hospital outcomes. A total of 34 patients with underlying rheumatological diseases who tested positive for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were included between March 2020 and April 2021 at King Fahd Hospital of the University. The study population consisted of 76.47% female and 23.53% male patients, with a mean age ranging from 20 to 40 years. Female gender (p=0.0001) and younger age (p=0.004) were associated with milder disease. The most frequent rheumatological disease was systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) (38.24%), which was associated with a milder infection (p=0.045). Patients treated with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) had a milder disease course (p=0.0037). Hypertension was significantly associated with severe COVID-19 disease (p=0.037). There was no significant relationship between SLE and the need for ICU admission. Patients on hydroxychloroquine and MMF tended to develop milder disease, and there was no association between the severity of the infection and the treatment with steroids.

In this article, supplementary data analyses regarding the association between different types of child maltreatment (CM) and diabetes as well as mediation analyses examining the role of personality functioning are provided (original research article: 'Associations of different types of child maltreatment and diabetes in adulthood - the mediating effect of personality functioning: findings from a population-based representative German sample') (Zara et al., 2023). Analyses are based on a representative sample of the German population (N = 5,041). Data was acquired through a representative survey conducted by the independent research institute USUMA Berlin. CM, personality functioning, a diabetes diagnosis as well as symptoms of depression and anxiety were assessed using self-report questionnaires (CTQ, OPD-SQS, PHQ-4). Correlation analyses for all used variables were conducted. Independent t-tests were performed to examine whether symptoms of depression and anxiety are elevated in patients with diabetes and CM (compared to no CM). Regarding the odd ratios (ORs) calculated to examine the association between types of CM and diabetes as well as mediation analyses investigating the role of personality functioning in these associations, sensitivity analyses with persons ≥ 30 years are provided. The additional analyses are intended to add to the body of research showing that patients with diabetes experience symptoms of depression and anxiety more frequently compared to the general population (Kampling and Kruse, 2020; Chireh et al., 2019; Smith et al., 2018), examine the association between different types of CM and diabetes, and explore the role of personality functioning in the association between CM and diabetes.

Background and objective: The viability of the periodontal ligament (PDL) cells on the root surface of the avulsed tooth determines the prognosis of the replanted tooth, which in turn is determined by a suitable transport medium in which the tooth was stored. The aim of the present study is to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of Ringer's lactate (RL) as a storage medium for an avulsed tooth in maintaining the PDL cell viability with dextrose normal saline (DNS), oral rehydration salt (ORS), egg white (EW), and infant milk formula (IMF). Materials and methods: A total of 85 freshly extracted human teeth were divided into five experimental groups and two control groups. The positive and negative controls corresponded to 0-minute and 8-hour dry time, respectively. The experimental teeth were stored dry for 30 minutes and then immersed in one of five experimental media (RL, DNS, ORS, EW, and IMF) for 45 minutes. The teeth were then treated with collagenase type III and trypsin for 10 minutes. The number of viable PDL cells was counted with a hemocytometer and analyzed. Results: Statistical analysis showed that IMF, RL, and EW had no statistically significant differences among them in maintaining the viability of the PDL cells but were significantly better than DNS. No statistically significant difference between RL, EW, and ORS in the number of viable PDL cells. Conclusion: Infant milk formula (IMF), RL, and EW showed similar results within the parameters of the study; they can be used as alternative storage media for avulsed teeth. DNS showed poor results, and ORS could serve as short-term storage media if the other solutions are not readily available. Clinical significance: The search for an appropriate storage media with favorable pH and osmolality along with easy availability is the basic thought behind this study. Introduction: Diarrhea morbidity and mortality remain child health and economic burdens in low resource settings. In Ethiopia, diarrheal disease treatment service utilization remains very low. However, evidence on the level of utilization of zinc bundled with ORS among under-five caregivers' was not addressed. Objective: The study aimed to identify predictors of under-five caregivers' utilization of co-packaged zinc and oral rehydration salts for childhood diarrhea in East Wollega Zone, Western Ethiopia, in 2022. Methods: The study design used was a community-based cross-sectional study that was conducted among 540 randomly selected participants from April 1 to 30, 2022. Data were collected using interviewer-administered semi-structured questionnaires. It was entered into Epi-data version 3.1 and analyzed using SPSS version 26. An adjusted odds ratio along with a 95% confidence level was estimated, and a P value <0.05 was considered to declare the statistical significance in the multivariable analysis. Results: About 39.6% of under-five caregivers' had utilized co-packaged zinc and oral rehydration salts for their childhood diarrhea at least once in the last 12 months. Having family size less than 5 [AOR and 95% CI = 5.72 (2.93,11.15)]; heard about the co-pack [AOR and 95% CI = 9.52 (4.95,23.68)]; perceived health status for the recent episode as poor [AOR and 95% CI = 5.90 (2.58, 15.96)] and medium [AOR and 95% CI = 2.20 (1.02, 4.83)]; perceived severity for recent episodes [AOR and 95% CI = 4.48 (1.36, 14.76)] and being community-based health insurance non-member [AOR and 95% CI = 2.28 (1.34, 6.90)] were statistically associated with co-packaged zinc and ORS utilization. Conclusion: The study found that co-packaged zinc and oral rehydration salt utilization was low. Family size, heard about the co-pack, perceived health status, perceived severity, and CBHI membership were predictors of co-packaged utilization of zinc and ORS. Hence, concerned bodies in the health system should have devoted to maximize its uptake.

Olfactory receptors (ORs) play a key role in the prime sensorial perception, being highly relevant for intra/interspecific interactions. ORs are a subgroup of G-protein coupled receptors that exhibit highly complex subgenomes in vertebrates. However, OR repertoires remain poorly studied in fish lineages, precluding finely retracing their origin, evolution, and diversification, especially in the most basal groups. Here, we conduct an exhaustive gene screening upon 43 high-quality fish genomes exhibiting varied gene repertoires (2-583 genes). While the early vertebrates performed gas exchange through gills, we hypothesize that the emergence of new breathing structures (swim bladder and paired lungs) in early osteichthyans may be associated with expansions in the ORs gene families sensitive to airborne molecules. Additionally, we verify that the OR repertoire of moderns actinopterygians has not increased as expected following a whole genome duplication, likely due to regulatory mechanisms compensating the gene load excess. Finally, we identify 25 distinct OR families, allowing us to propose an updated universal nomenclature for the fish ORs.

Protein acetylation can quickly modify the physiology of bacteria to respond to changes in environmental or nutritional conditions, but little information on these modifications is available in rhizobia. In this study, we report the lysine acetylome of Azorhizobium caulinodans strain ORS571, a model rhizobium isolated from stem nodules of the tropical legume Sesbania rostrata that is capable of fixing nitrogen in the free-living state and during symbiosis. Antibody enrichment and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) analysis were used to characterize the acetylome. There are 2,302 acetylation sites from 982 proteins, accounting for 20.8% of the total proteins. Analysis of the acetylated motifs showed the preferences for the amino acid residues around acetylated lysines. The response regulator CheY1, previously characterized to be involved in chemotaxis in strain ORS571, was identified as an acetylated protein, and a mutation of the acetylated site of CheY1 significantly impaired the strain's motility. In addition, a Zn+-dependent deacetylase (AZC_0414) was characterized, and the construction of a deletion mutant strain showed that it played a role in chemotaxis. Our study provides the first global analysis of lysine acetylation in ORS571, suggesting that acetylation plays a role in various physiological processes. In addition, we demonstrate its involvement in the chemotaxis process. The acetylome of ORS571 provides insights to investigate the regulation mechanism of rhizobial physiology. IMPORTANCE Acetylation is an important modification that regulates protein function and has been found to regulate physiological processes in various bacteria. The physiology of rhizobium A. caulinodans ORS571 is regulated by multiple mechanisms both when free living and in symbiosis with the host; however, the regulatory role of acetylation is not yet known. Here, we took an acetylome-wide approach to identify acetylated proteins in A. caulinodans ORS571 and performed clustering analyses. Acetylation of chemotaxis proteins was preliminarily investigated, and the upstream acetylation-regulating enzyme involved in chemotaxis was characterized. These findings provide new insights to explore the physiological mechanisms of rhizobia.

Termites (Insecta, Blattodea, Termitoidae) are a widespread and diverse group of eusocial insects known for their ability to digest wood matter. Herein, we report the draft genome of the subterranean termite Reticulitermes lucifugus, an economically important species and among the most studied taxa with respect to eusocial organization and mating system. The final assembly (~813 Mb) covered up to 88% of the estimated genome size and, in agreement with the Asexual Queen Succession Mating System, it was found completely homozygous. We predicted 16,349 highly supported gene models and 42% of repetitive DNA content. Transposable elements of R. lucifugus show similar evolutionary dynamics compared to that of other termites, with two main peaks of activity localized at 25% and 8% of Kimura divergence driven by DNA, LINE and SINE elements. Gene family turnover analyses identified multiple instances of gene duplication associated with R. lucifugus diversification, with significant lineage-specific gene family expansions related to development, perception and nutrient metabolism pathways. Finally, we analysed P450 and odourant receptor gene repertoires in detail, highlighting the large diversity and dynamical evolutionary history of these proteins in the R. lucifugus genome. This newly assembled genome will provide a valuable resource for further understanding the molecular basis of termites biology as well as for pest control.
