RESUMO

Pollution from personal care products, such as UV-filters like avobenzone and nano-zinc oxide (nZnO), poses a growing threat to marine ecosystems. To better understand this hazard, especially for lesser-studied sediment-dwelling marine organisms, we investigated the physiological impacts of simultaneous exposure to nZnO and avobenzone on the lugworm Arenicola marina. Lugworms were exposed to nZnO, avobenzone, or their combination for three weeks. We assessed pollutant-induced metabolic changes by measuring key metabolic intermediates in the body wall and coelomic fluid, and oxidative stress by analyzing antioxidant levels and oxidative lesions in proteins and lipids of the body wall. Exposure to UV filters resulted in shifts in the concentrations of Krebs' cycle and urea cycle intermediates, as well as alterations in certain amino acids in the body wall and coelomic fluid of the lugworms. Pathway enrichment analyses revealed that nZnO induced more pronounced metabolic shifts compared to avobenzone or their combination. Exposure to avobenzone or nZnO alone prompted an increase in tissue antioxidant capacity, indicating a compensatory response to restore redox balance, which effectively prevented oxidative damage to proteins or lipids. However, co-exposure to nZnO and avobenzone suppressed superoxide dismutase and lead to accumulation of lipid peroxides and methionine sulfoxide, indicating oxidative stress and damage to lipids and proteins. Our findings highlight oxidative stress as a significant mechanism of toxicity for both nZnO and avobenzone, especially when combined, and underscores the importance of further investigating the fitness implications of oxidative stress induced by these common UV filters in benthic marine organisms.

While wastewater and paint particles discharged from the in-water cleaning process of ship hulls are consistently released into benthic ecosystems, their hazardous effects on non-target animals remain largely unclear. In this study, we provide evidence on acute harmful effects of hull cleaning wastewater in marine polychaete Perinereis aibuhitensis by analyzing physiological and biochemical parameters such as survival, burrowing activity, and oxidative status. Raw wastewater samples were collected during ship hull cleaning processes in the field. Two wastewater samples for the exposure experiment were prepared in the laboratory: 1) mechanically filtered in the in-water cleaning system (MF) and 2) additionally filtered with a 0.45 µm filter in the laboratory (LF). These wastewater samples contained high concentrations of metals (zinc and copper) and metal-based booster biocides (copper pyrithione and zinc pyrithione) compared to those analyzed in seawater. Polycheates were exposed to different concentrations of the two wastewater samples for 96 h. Higher mortality was observed in response to MF compared to LF-exposed polychaetes. Both wastewater samples dose-dependently decreased burrowing activity and AChE activity. Drastic oxidative stress was observed in response to the two wastewater samples. MDA levels were significantly increased by MF and LF samples. Significant GSH depletion was observed with MF exposure, while increased and decreased GSH contents were observed in LF-exposed polychaetes. Enzymatic activities of antioxidant components, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione S-transferase were significantly modulated by both wastewater samples. These results indicate that even filtered hull cleaning wastewater can have deleterious effects on the health status of polychaetes.

Estrogen receptors (ERs) are thought to be the ancestor of all steroid receptors and are present in most lophotrochozoans studied to date, including molluscs, annelids, and rotifers. A number of studies have investigated the functional role of estrogen receptors in invertebrate species, although most are in molluscs, where the receptor is constitutively active. In vitro experiments provided evidence for ligand-activated estrogen receptors in annelids, raising important questions about the role of estrogen signalling in lophotrochozoan lineages. Here, we review the concordant and discordant evidence of estradiol receptor signalling in lophotrochozoans, with a focus on annelids and rotifers. We explore the de novo synthesis of estrogens, the evolution and expression of estrogen receptors, and physiological responses to activation of estrogen receptors in the lophotrochozoan phyla Annelida and Rotifera. Key data are missing to determine if de novo biosynthesis of estradiol in non-molluscan lophotrochozoans is likely. For example, an ortholog for the CYP11 gene is present, but confirmation of substrate conversion and measured tissue products is lacking. Orthologs CYP17 and CYP19 are lacking, yet intermediates or products (e.g. estradiol) in tissues have been measured. Estrogen receptors are present in multiple species, and for a limited number, in vitro data show agonist binding of estradiol and/or transcriptional activation. The expression patterns of the lophotrochozoan ERs suggest developmental, reproductive, and digestive roles but are highly species dependent. E2 exposures suggest that lophotrochozoan ERs may play a role in reproduction, but no strong dose-response relationship has been established. Therefore, we expect most lophotrochozoan species, outside of perhaps platyhelminths, to have an ER but their physiological role remains elusive. Mining genomes for orthologs gene families responsible for steroidogenesis, coupled with in vitro and in vivo studies of the steroid pathway are needed to better assess whether lophotrochozoans are capable of estradiol biosynthesis. One major challenge is that much of the data are divided across a diversity of species. We propose that the polychaetes Capitella teleta or Platyneris dumerilii, and rotifer Brachionus manjavacas may be strong species choices for studies of estrogen receptor signalling, because of available genomic data, established laboratory culture techniques, and gene knockout potential.

2-ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate (EHMC) is a commonly used UV filter, and is receiving increasing concerns due to its ubiquitous occurrence in a variety of environmental media and potential adverse effects. This study was aimed to assess the ecotoxicological potentials of EHMC on the marine polychaete Perinereis aibuhitensis. To this end, ragworms were exposed to 2, 20, 200 µg/L EHMC for 14 days and multiple toxicological endpoints were investigated. The results showed that EHMC significantly reduced burrowing rate, but did not affect AChE activity. Exposure to EHMC significantly elevated the activities of SOD and CAT and decreased the levels of lipid peroxidation. Besides, the induction of AKP activity indicated a stimulated immune response in the ragworms when exposed to high concentration of EHMC. Furthermore, the upregulated expression of caspase-8 suggested that EHMC might induce apoptosis in ragworms via the death receptor-mediated extrinsic pathway. Our findings highlight the potential environmental risks of EHMC to marine ecosystems.

The complete mitochondrial genome of Marphysa victori Lavesque, Daffe, Bonifácio & Hutchings, 2017, was 15,891 bp in length with a GC content of 41%, comprising 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, and 22 transfer RNA genes. The maximum-likelihood tree showed the closest relationship between M. victori and M. sanguinea.

This study focused on spatial-temporal variations in the composition and structure of polychaete communities associated with two coexisting oyster species in a southern Gulf of Mexico coastal lagoon, showed that Crassostrea rhizophorae hosted 23 polychaete species and C. virginica only four. The observed variability was mainly explained by differences in salinity and sedimentation rate, two factors that also influenced the host species distribution. The highest values of richness and diversity occurred at C. rhizophorae sites during the rainy season, coinciding with increased salinity and a decrease in sedimentation rate. The shell-borer species Nereis garwoodi and Polydora websteri occurred in both oysters, but showing higher frequencies in C. virginica during the Nortes season (i.e., the cold fronts season). Our results underscore the contrasting diversity of associated polychaetes with two coexisting oyster species and emphasize the need for considering additional environmental parameters to allow better understanding of the factors that are driving the structure of these communities.

Nereididae is among the most familiar of marine annelid families, common and well-studied in most marine environments but paradoxically no recent key or identification guide exists to the world's genera. Here updated generic descriptions, a list of characters, a linear key to genera, and minimal diagnoses that distinguish each genus from all others in the family are provided. This information is generated from a Delta database of 186 morphological characters and a link is provided to downloadable software allowing the same data to be interrogated using the open-source Delta program Intkey - a nonlinear multiple entry point computerised interactive key. For each genus the recent literature is also summarised, comments on taxonomic status provided, and published keys to species cited. Nexus format matrices are provided for all 45 genera and 158 Nereididae species, representing all genera, scored for 146 multistate characters from the same character list to facilitate future phylogenetic studies.

Podarkeopsischinensissp. nov. (Annelida, Hesionidae) is described based on specimens collected from the coast of southeast China. It is the first Podarkeopsis species described from the Indo-Pacific, although there are already nine valid Podarkeopsis species known from other parts of the world. This new species can be distinguished from the other Podarkeopsis species in having a palpostyle as long as the palpophore and double aciculae in both notopodia and neuropodia, and in bearing bifid furcate chaetae which have a smooth base on the shorter tine. A phylogenetic analysis based on the concatenated sequences of five gene fragments (COI, 16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, 28S rRNA, and histone H3) from 18 specimens of P.chinensissp. nov. showed that they formed a monophyletic clade that is sister to P.levifuscina. K2P genetic distances indicated that the four gene fragments (COI, 16S rRNA, 18S rRNA, and 28S rRNA) of P.chinensissp. nov. diverged from the corresponding sequences of the closest related species of Podarkeopsis in GenBank and BOLD Systems by 21.1-27.5%, 20.3-23.1%, 0.1-0.2%, and 2.1-3.2%. An identification key is provided for species in the genus Podarkeopsis.

The spionid polychaete Polydora hoplura Claparède, 1868 is a shell borer widely occurring across the world and considered introduced in many areas. It was originally described in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. Adult diagnostic features are the palps with black bands, prostomium weakly incised anteriorly, caruncle extending to the end of chaetiger 3, short occipital antenna, and heavy sickle-shaped spines in the posterior notopodia. The Bayesian inference analysis of sequence data of four gene fragments (2369 bp in total) of the mitochondrial 16S rDNA, nuclear 18S, 28S rDNA and Histone 3 has shown that worms with these morphological features from the Mediterranean, northern Europe, Brazil, South Africa, Australia, Republic of Korea, Japan and California are genetically identical, form a well-supported clade, and can be considered conspecific. The genetic analysis of a 16S dataset detected 15 haplotypes of this species, 10 of which occur only in South Africa. Despite the high genetic diversity of P. hoplura in South Africa, we tentatively propose the Northwest Pacific, or at the most the Indo-West Pacific, as its home region, not the Atlantic Ocean or the Eastern Pacific Ocean. The history of the discovery of P. hoplura around the world appears to be intimately linked to global shipping commencing in the mid-19th century, followed by the advent of the global movement of commercial shellfish (especially the Pacific oyster Magallana gigas) in the 20th century, interlaced with continued, complex dispersal by vessels and aquaculture. Given that P. hoplura has been detected in only a few of the 17 countries where Pacific oysters have been established, we predict that it may already be present in many more regions. As global connectivity through world trade continues to increase, it is likely that novel populations of P. hoplura will continue to emerge.

Global projections predict significant increases in ocean temperature and changes in ocean chemistry, including salinity variations by 2100. This has led to a substantial interest in the study of thermal ecophysiology, as temperature is a major factor shaping marine ectotherm communities. However, responses to temperature may be influenced by other factors such as salinity, highlighting the relevance of multiple stressor studies. In the present work, we experimentally evaluated the thermal tolerance of the marine ragworm Hediste diversicolor under predicted global change scenarios. Organisms were subjected to an experimental trial under control (24 °C), and two temperature treatment scenarios (ocean warming +3 °C - (27 °C) and heat wave +6 °C - (30 °C)), combined with salinity variations (20 and 30) in a full factorial design for 29 days. Environmental data from the field were collected during 2019 and 2020. At day 30 post exposure, upper thermal limits (Critical Thermal Maximum - CTMax), thermal safety margins (TSM) and acclimation capacity were measured. Higher acclimation temperatures led to higher thermal tolerance limits, confirming that H. diversicolor features some physiological plasticity, acclimation capacity and a positive thermal safety margin. This margin was greater considering in situ temperature data from 2019 than maximum temperatures for 2020 (CTMax > maximum habitat temperature-MHT). Moreover, smaller organisms displayed higher upper thermal limits suggesting that thermal tolerance is size dependent. Ragworms subjected to higher salinity also showed a higher CTMax than those acclimated to lower salinity. However, temperature and salinity showed an additive effect on CTMax, as no significant interaction was detected. We conclude that H. diversicolor can easily acclimate to increased water temperature, independently of salinity variations. Given the key role of ragworms in food webs in estuaries and coastal lagoons, substrate bioturbation and aquaculture, this information is relevant to support conservation actions, optimize culture protocols and identify thermal resistant strains.

Early annelid evolution is mostly known from 13 described species from Cambrian Burgess Shale-type Lagerstätten. We introduce a new exceptionally well-preserved polychaete, Ursactis comosa gen. et sp. nov., from the Burgess Shale (Wuliuan Stage). This small species (3-15 mm) is the most abundant Cambrian polychaete known to date. Most specimens come from Tokumm Creek, a new Burgess Shale locality in northern Kootenay National Park, British Columbia, Canada. Ursactis has a pair of large palps, thin peristomial neurochaetae and biramous parapodia bearing similarly sized capillary neurochaetae and notochaetae, except for segments six to nine, which also have longer notochaetae. The number of segments in this polychaete range between 8 and 10 with larger individuals having 10 segments. This number of segments in Ursactis is remarkably small compared with other polychaetes, including modern forms. Specimens with 10 segments show significant size variations, and the length of each segment increases with the body length, indicating that body growth was primarily achieved by increasing the size of existing segments rather than adding new ones. This contrasts with most modern polychaetes, which typically have a larger number of segments through additions of segments throughout life. The inferred growth pattern in Ursactis suggests that annelids had evolved control over segment addition by the mid-Cambrian.

Plastic debris has been reported in the marine environment since the '70s. These plastic materials are introduced into the marine environment in several sizes, one of them microplastics (MP), and they have drawn great interest and concern in the past decades. Consumption of MP can cause weight loss, feeding rate decrease, reproductive activity decrease, and several other negative effects. Ingestion of MPs has already been reported for some species of polychaetes but the use of these annelids in MP studies is still poorly reported. Costa et al. (2021) was the first study to investigate the capability of the reef-building polychaete Phragmatopoma caudata to incorporate microplastic in its colony's structures. This makes the colonies a reservoir of MP and thus they reflect the environment's quality regarding MP presence. Consequently, this specie becomes an important asset to MP pollution investigation in coastal areas. Therefore, this work aims to investigate the abundance of MPs on the coastline of Espírito Santo using P. caudata as an indicator of MP presence. For this, we collected samples of P. caudata colonies in 12 sampling sites along the Espírito Santo coast (three replicates at each site). These colony samples were processed to extract the MPs particles from the colony surface, its inner structure, and tissues from the individuals. These MPs were counted using a stereomicroscope and sorted according to their color and type (filament, fragment, and other). Statistical analysis was performed using GraphPad Prism 9.3.0. Significant values followed p < 0.05. We found MP particles in all 12 sampled beaches, configuring a pollution rate of 100 %. The number of filaments was notably greater than the number of fragments and others. The most impacted beaches were found inside the metropolitan region of the state. Finally, P. caudata is an efficient and trustable indicator of microplastic in coastal areas.

Regeneration is critical for survivorship after injury, sublethal predation, and asexual reproduction; it allows individuals to recover, potentially enabling populations of bait species to overcome the effects of bait collection through incidental asexual reproduction. Opportunities for regeneration are created when worms break during collection (which happens more often than not) and are thrown back into the estuary. Additionally, the trade and movement of bait could result in the range expansion of invasive species. This study investigated bait collection habits of local fishermen and the in situ incidence of regeneration in the estuarine moonshine worm, Diopatra aciculata. The evidence shows that this species is capable of anterior and posterior regeneration. The disproportionately small percentage of worms that seem to be recovering from the degree of damage that may be inflicted during bait collection suggests that regeneration may not help worms to withstand the effects of bait collection. However, the continuous movement and discarding of even small numbers of bait in other estuaries can lead to range expansion through incremental build-up, forming new populations, if these fragments are large enough to regenerate.

Here, we report the complete mitochondrial genome of sabellid Pseudopotamilla reniformis (Bruguière, 1789) (16,408 bp) and comprised of two ribosomal RNAs, the ubiquitous set of 13 protein-coding sequences, and 22 tRNAs. The order of protein-coding genes is consistent with the proposed conserved pattern, which contradicts recent discovery in other members of the family (Sabella spallanzanii in Daffe et al., 2021 and Bispira melanostigma in Hornfeck et al., 2022).

Polychaetes are important benthic macrofauna that lives in sediments, usually in intertidal flats with high organic content and high sulfide. It has been suggested that polychaete bioturbation could perform environmental remediation. During the process, the microbial community plays important roles. Here, we used high-throughput sequencing technology to study the bioturbation effects on the bacterial community in the polychaete (Perinereis aibuhitensis) burrows at different tidal positions in intertidal flat. The results showed that the bacterial communities were dramatically influenced by the polychaete bioturbation. The ACE, Chao, and Shannon indices of the polychaete burrows increased in summer. Dominant phyla in the polychaete burrows were Proteobacteria, Campilobacterota, Desulfobacterota, Chloroflexi, and Bacteroidota, and the dominant bacterial families were Sulfurvaceae, Flavobacteriaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, Woeseiaceae, Desulfobulbaceae, and Sulfurimonadaceae. Results of linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) showed that groups that include organic matter degraders, such as Bacteroidota, Flavobacteriaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, Woeseiaceae, and groups that include sulfur oxidizers, such as Campilobacterota, Sulfurovaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, Desulfobulbaceae, and Sulfurimonadaceae, were significantly increased due to the polychaete bioturbation. The polychaete bioturbation reduced the complexity of the bacterial co-occurrence network while increased its modularity and homogeneity. The polychaete bioturbation also changed the functional groups, which significantly enhanced in functional groups of aerobic nitrite oxidation, nitration, dark thiosulfate oxidation, dark sulfur oxidation, and dark sulfite oxidation, while nitrogen respiration and nitrate respiration decreased. These results provide insight into the impact of bacterial communities under the intertidal polychaete bioturbation.

Promastobranchus Gallardo, 1968 is a small genus in the polychaete family Capitellidae, and the available records are largely reported from the Indo-West Pacific region. Although Gallardo (1968) and Green (2002) noted that Promastobranchus species had intraspecific variation in the number of thoracic chaetigers when they described the two previously known species, this variation has not been corroborated using molecular evidence. In this study, a new Promastobranchus species, Promastobranchusvariabilissp. nov., is described based on 29 specimens collected from the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea. The new species is mainly characterized by having a tessellated epithelium in the anterior thorax, nine teeth in three rows above the main fang in the abdominal hooks, four pairs of genital pores located on the intersegmental grooves between chaetigers 9 and 13, and its unique methyl green staining pattern. Comparisons of multiple gene markers (16S, 18S, 28S, and H3) revealed no genetic divergence (K2P < 0.003) among these type specimens with 9-13 thoracic chaetigers. In other words, the new species exhibited morphological variability in the number of thoracic chaetigers during ontogeny, and this character was unsuitable to differentiate Promastobranchus species as the ranges overlap among Promastobranchus species. This is the third Promastobranchus species known in the world, and it is now recorded along the Fujian coast.

Introduction: The bivalve Semimytilus patagonicus is a potentially useful bioindicator because of its feeding mechanism, and the worm Pseudonereis gallapagensis is also interesting as a bioindicator because it is benthonic, abundant, and a food source for the squid Doryteuthis gahi. However, their sensitivity to contaminants has not been sufficiently studied. Objective: To test the usefulness of the mussel Semimytilus patagonicus and the polychaete Pseudonereis gallapagensis as ecotoxicological tools for detergents in the marine environment. Methods: We used 120 individuals of S. patagonicus from Miraflores and 120 of P. gallapagensis from Barranco (both near the city of Lima, Peru). For the bioassays, we used two anionic detergents (active ingredient, ai, Sodium Dodecylbenzene Sulfonate). For S. patagonicus, with an average valve length of 32.3 ± 6.4 mm, we tested "Double power Ariel®" (90 %) at concentrations of 17.5, 35, 70 and 140 mg ai l-1, evaluated after 48 and 72 h of exposure; and for P. gallapagensis, with a total body length of 20.4 ± 8.8 mm, we tested "Caricia®" at 62.5, 125, 250, 500 and 1 000 mg of ai l-1 at 24, 48 and 72 h of exposure. Results: The LC50 values (Mean Lethal Concentration) were 34.95 mg ia l-1 for S. patagonicus and 102.48 mg ia l-1 for P. gallapagensis at 72 h of exposure. The detergents were toxic for S. patagonicus and slightly toxic for P. gallapagensis. The risk classification for S. patagonicus is "harmful" and for P. gallapagensis "not classifiable". Conclusions: These two bioindicators allow evaluating the acute toxicity of SDBS-based commercial detergents in the marine aquatic environment.


Introducción: El bivalvo Semimytilus patagonicus es un bioindicador potencialmente útil por su mecanismo de alimentación, y el gusano Pseudonereis gallapagensis también es interesante como bioindicador por ser bentónico, abundante y fuente de alimento para el calamar Doryteuthis gahi. Sin embargo, su sensibilidad a los contaminantes no ha sido suficientemente estudiada. Objetivo: Probar la utilidad del mejillón S. patagonicus y el poliqueto P. gallapagensis como herramientas ecotoxicológicas para detergentes en el medio marino. Métodos: Se utilizaron 120 individuos de S. patagonicus de Miraflores y 120 de P. gallapagensis de Barranco (ambos cerca de la ciudad de Lima, Perú). Para los bioensayos se utilizaron dos detergentes aniónicos (ingrediente activo, ia, dodecilbenceno sulfonato de sodio). Para S. patagonicus, con una longitud valver promedio de 32.3 ± 6.4 mm, probamos Ariel Doble Poder® (90 %) a concentraciones de 17.5, 35, 70 y 140 mg·ia·l-1, evaluadas a las 48 y 72 h de exposición; y para P. gallapagensis, con una longitud corporal total de 20.4 ± 8.8 mm, probamos Caricia® a 62.5, 125, 250, 500 y 1 000 mg·ia·l-1 a las 24, 48 y 72 h de exposición. Resultados: Los valores de CL50 (Concentración Letal Media) fueron de 34.95 mg·ia·l-1 para S. patagonicus y 102.48 mg·ia·l-1 para P. gallapagensis a las 72 h de exposición. Los detergentes fueron tóxicos para S. patagonicus y levemente tóxicos para P. gallapagensis. La clasificación de riesgo para S. patagonicus es "nocivo" y para P. gallapagensis "no clasificable". Conclusiones: Estos dos bioindicadores permiten evaluar la toxicidad aguda del detergente comercial a base de SDBS en el ambiente acuático marino.

Here, we sequenced and annotated the complete mitochondrial genome for the terebellid polychaete, Neoamphitrite affinis (Malmgren 1866). The complete mitogenome of N. affinis is 15,823 bp, with 33.4% A, 18.2% C, 11.5% G, and 37.0% T. The circular N. affinis mitochondrial genome comprises 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 23 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes including 2 methionine tRNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA (rRNA) genes, and a non-coding region. Phylogenomic analysis based on 26 in-group taxa belonging to the two main clades, Sedentaria and Errantia, is congruent with published phylogenetic relationship for annelids, which N. affinis was grouped with Pista cristata (Terebellida; Terebellidae). This mitogenome resource will be useful for future phylogenetic studies of families belonging to Sedentaria.

Nowadays, marine ecosystems are under severe threat from the simultaneous presence of multiple stressors, including microplastics (MPs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P). In addition to their presence in various marine compartments, there are increasing concerns on the potential capacity of MPs to sorb, concentrate and transfer these pollutants in the environment. Although their ecotoxicological impacts are currently evident, few works have studied the combined effects of these contaminants. Therefore, the major purpose of this work was to assess the toxicity of environmental relevant concentrations of MPs (<30 µm) and B[a]P, alone and in mixture, in the seaworm Hediste diversicolor by exploring their accumulation and hazardous biological effects for 3 and 7 days. Environmental MPs were able to increase B[a]P in a time-dependent manner. The obtained results showed that individual treatments, as well as co-exposure to contaminants, caused cytotoxicity and genotoxicity in the cœlomic fluid cells, while oxidative stress effects were observed at tissue and gene levels associated with alteration in neurotransmission. Overall, our findings provide additional clues about MPs as organic pollutant vectors in the marine environment, and contribute to a clearer understanding of their toxicological risk to aquatic invertebrates.

Hydrocarbons pose significant risks to marine ecosystems. A field experiment investigated the effects of four different hydrocarbon products (diesel fuel and three lubricating oils: Unused, Used and Biodegradable) on sediment macrofaunal communities over a five year period, in a shallow Antarctic marine embayment. Sediments were defaunated, treated with a hydrocarbon and deployed in trays (including a control) on the seabed. Diesel fuel had the biggest initial impact on communities, with strong effects at 5 weeks and 1 year, in particular on annelids, but also on amphipods, ostracods and cumaceans. By five years, however, the effect of diesel was less than that of lubrication oils and showed more recovery than oiled treatments and the biggest effect was from the Used oil. There was an effect of hydrocarbons on diversity, especially diesel, at 5 weeks and 1 year, but by 2 and 5 years diversity was not different or greater in hydrocarbon treatments than controls. Total abundance was always lower in hydrocarbon treatments than controls, especially for crustaceans, but annelids were more abundant in oil treatments than controls at 5 years. Oils, and in some cases diesel, enhanced the abundance of some taxa at 2-5 years, including molluscs, some polychaete families (capitellids, cirratulids, dorvilleids), oligochaetes, as well as ostracods, cumaceans and isopods. Amphipods and tanaids were most sensitive to hydrocarbons, and annelids were very sensitive to diesel. The Biodegradable oil had similar magnitude community effects to standard oil at 5 years, but annelids were more affected by Biodegradable oil, particularly at 1 and 2 years, and it did not enhance annelid or mollusc abundance at 5 years like the other oils, except for some polychaete families. Impacts of spilled hydrocarbons in Antarctica will persist well beyond 5 years, but diesel impacts will recover faster than oil.
