Background and Purpose: Personal mastery is essential in the nursing profession, as it directly impacts the quality of care and the well-being of the nurses themselves. However, there is a lack of psychometrically reliable tools to measure it among nurses. This study evaluates the applicability of the Personal Mastery Scale (PMS) among Italian nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional study surveyed Italian nurses using self-administered questionnaires, including the PMS. A total of 209 healthcare workers, primarily nurses, from various operational units participated in the study. The majority of respondents (84.2%) were nurses. The gender distribution was predominantly female (83.3%). Results: Statistical analyses, including factor analyses, assessed the scale's reliability and validity. The scale demonstrated adequate internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = .670) and construct validity. Conclusions: The Italian version of the PMS is a reliable and valid tool for assessing personal mastery among nurses. Understanding personal mastery is crucial for promoting resilience and delivering quality care. Further research should explore its relationship with outcomes and intervention effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Services for adults with intellectual disabilities in Hong Kong have a hierarchical staffing structure. Professional social workers, who performed as mid-level employees, work with frontline support workers to deliver services to clients. METHODS: This qualitative study explored social workers' experiences of working with support workers through in-depth interviews with 13 participants. FINDINGS: The study revealed that social workers perceived a significant variation between themselves and support workers in terms of working motivation, values and attitudes towards clients with intellectual disabilities. Despite the hierarchical relationships, social workers and support workers share the power of service decision-making. Social workers used firm and gentle approaches to facilitate changes in practices to uphold service values. These findings were compared with Western literature on this topic, indicating similarities and differences. CONCLUSION: The organisations need to facilitate an effective collaboration between social workers and support workers to enhance the quality of services for adults with intellectual disabilities in Hong Kong.

BACKGROUND: Worldwide growing shortages among health care staff are observed. This also holds true for medical assistants in Germany. Medical assistants mainly work in outpatient care and are the first point of contact for patients while performing clinical and administrative tasks. We sought to explore profession turnover among medical assistants, that is, in terms of the underlying decision-making process, the reasons for leaving the medical assistant profession and potential retention measures from the perspective of former medical assistants. METHODS: For this qualitative study, we conducted semi-structured telephone interviews with 20 former medical assistants between August and November 2023. Eligible for participation were medical assistants who (i) were of legal age, (ii) completed medical assistant vocational training and ii) were formerly employed as a medical assistant, but currently employed in another profession. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and content-analyzed. RESULTS: Former medical assistants expressed various, often interrelated reasons for leaving the profession. These were changes in priorities throughout their career (e.g., in terms of working hours and salary), a constant high workload, barriers to further training, poor career prospects, and poor interpersonal relationships particularly with supervisors, but also within the team and with patients as well as the perception of insufficient recognition by politics and society. Suggestions of former medical assistants to motivate medical assistants to stay in their profession included amongst others higher salaries, more flexible work structures, improved career prospects, and more recognition from supervisors, patients, and society. CONCLUSION: Our study provides insights into the complex decision-making process underlying ultimate medical assistant profession turnover. In light of an already existing shortage of medical assistants, we suggest to further explore how the suggested interventions that aim at retention of working medical assistants can be implemented.

There is growing evidence that the uptake and use of telehealth is influenced by the distinct specialty area or type of healthcare service provided, with mental health services presenting particular challenges. However, little is known about how telehealth use differs between different mental health professions, and no qualitative research has explored variations in telehealth use and perspectives at the profession level within Australian mental health services. To address this gap, we analyzed transcripts from 19 semi-structured interviews conducted with mental healthcare professionals in a local health district within New South Wales, Australia. A secondary analysis of the data revealed the distinct ways in which different mental health professions perceive and engage with telehealth depending on their specific role and approach to practice. Application of a systems theory lens highlighted the challenges each profession faces at different levels of telehealth engagement, and the macro-systemic power dynamics and hierarchies that shape profession-specific differences in telehealth use.

BACKGROUND: Accessible, manualized, skill-based training ready for wide dissemination is needed to prepare healthcare staff to meet the needs of people impacted by the opioid epidemic. METHODS: A 2-day workshop and simulation training was designed by an interprofessional substance use disorder (SUD) specialty care team, adapted to a virtual platform, manualized, and offered to healthcare staff and trainees from a large healthcare system. The workshop was offered 6 times over the course of 10 months with a total of 177 participants from across the United States enrolled in the training. Interactive experiential learning strategies including games designed to test knowledge, small-group case discussions, video demonstrations of skills, patient panels, and 3 simulations of a patient with chronic pain who developed opioid use disorder in the context of long-term opioid therapy were utilized in efforts to build skills and confidence managing SUDs in primary care and general mental health settings. RESULTS: Of those who completed the post-workshop survey, most found both content and training structure useful, particularly content related to medication management, stigma, and collaborative care. In addition, overall confidence scores in assessing, diagnosing, and treating SUD increased. Skill building exercises, such as interprofessional team simulations, were highlighted as most beneficial. The workshop received national attention leading to a partnership with the healthcare system's simulation center for wider dissemination. CONCLUSION: Expanding access to SUD treatment requires training healthcare staff to effectively change attitudes, increase knowledge, and improve key skills. This 2-day interprofessional workshop was well-received by participants who reported high acceptability and satisfaction scores and demonstrated improved confidence in the management of SUDs. This type of manualized, collaborative, skill-based learning experience can foster staff preparedness and willingness to conceptualize SUD as a chronic condition amenable to treatment in different healthcare settings.

RESUMO

This report describes an innovative interprofessional education collaborative practice (IPCP) experience for rehabilitation professions students using a unique on-campus camp model through a community-academic partnership. Throughout the three-day camp, known as the Bright Ideas TBI Camp, interprofessional student groups deliver tailored health and wellness services to individuals with disabilities due to traumatic brain injury and their caregivers. Initial program evaluation suggests that this camp model offers an effective IPCP experience for students while addressing community health needs. Further outcome evaluation is needed to determine the impact of the camp on students' development of IPCP competencies and health outcomes of clients and caregivers.

BACKGROUND: To embed the Sustainable Development Goals in health profession education, educators must contextualise them to their profession and geographical region. This study used the nominal group technique to contextualise the SDGs for Australian nutrition and dietetics tertiary education programs by determining the specific knowledge, skills, and values required for graduating dietitians to practise sustainably. METHODS: In 2022, 23 experts in food and sustainability attended a group session that employed the nominal group technique to discuss the Sustainable Development Goals knowledge, skills, and values Australian dietetic students should develop. After the group session, participants ranked the Sustainable Development Goals according to their perceived level of importance for student dietitians. These data were analysed using multi-methods, including a summation of the rankings, directed qualitative content analysis and reflexive thematic analysis. RESULTS: The three highest-priority Sustainable Development Goals identified were (1) Zero Hunger, (2) Good Health and Well-Being, and (3) Responsible Consumption and Production, which were then considered with the qualitative findings. The main categories that were generated from the content analysis reflected the broad knowledge, skills, and values student dietitians should develop. The preliminary codes provided specific details for each of the main categories. The thematic analysis generated two additional themes: the importance of Indigenous ways of knowing, being and doing, and authentic experiential learning activities. CONCLUSIONS: The method employed for this study provides a useful framework for health professions to contextualise the Sustainable Development Goals to their profession and geographical region. For this study, the ranking process and the qualitative data analysis enabled the Sustainable Development Goals to be reframed in a way that would be meaningful for dietetic educators and students and demonstrate the interrelatedness of the goals. The direct qualitative content analysis and reflexive thematic analysis identified the knowledge, skills, and values student dietitians should develop.

AIM: To explore the disruptive influence of workplace gaslighting behaviours and mobbing on nurses' career entrenchment across multiple healthcare centres. DESIGN: A multi-centre cross-sectional. METHODS: Data were collected from 483 nurses from various healthcare settings in Egypt, spanning from January 2024 to February 2024. The Gaslighting at Work Questionnaire, Luxembourg Workplace Mobbing Scale and Career Entrenchment Scale were employed for data collection. RESULTS: The study revealed moderate levels of gaslighting, mobbing and nurses' career entrenchment. Also, there is a negative correlation between nurses' career entrenchment and both gaslighting and mobbing, while gaslighting and mobbing exhibit a positive correlation. The study also highlighted regional disparities in the prevalence of these phenomena, with the highest incidences noted in urban healthcare settings. CONCLUSION: The findings underscore the critical impact of workplace gaslighting and mobbing on nurses' career entrenchment. REPORTING METHOD: The relevant reporting method has been adhered to, that is, STROBE. IMPLICATION FOR THE PROFESSION: The future of the nursing profession requires building productive nurses who can cope with negative workplace experiences. This could be achieved by cultivating a workplace culture that has zero tolerance for these experiences. Offering counselling services or employee assistance programmes to help nurses cope with the emotional toll of these negative experiences is a promising strategy. IMPACT: This study is the first to examine serious workplace practices like gaslighting and mobbing in a nursing context, emphasizing their effect on nursing-sensitive indicators like career entrenchment. It is one of the important initiatives geared towards upgrading the competitiveness and magnetism of healthcare organizations in the era of green human resources management. Results provide valuable insights for nurse leaders to control nursing turnover and shortage crises in different endeavours. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: In our study, nurses from diverse geographical regions and varied specialties actively participate, offering a rich tapestry of experiences and perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Physician-assisted suicide (PAS) is typically associated with serious physical illnesses that are prevalent in palliative care. However, individuals with mental illnesses may also experience such severity that life becomes intolerable. In February 2020, the previous German law prohibiting PAS was repealed. Patients with severe mental illnesses are increasingly likely to approach physicians with requests for PAS. AIMS: To explore the ethical and moral perspectives of medical students and physicians when making individual decisions regarding PAS. METHOD: An anonymised digital survey was conducted among medical students and physicians in Germany. Participants were presented with a case vignette of a chronically depressed patient requesting PAS. Participants decided on PAS provision and assessed theoretical arguments. We employed generalised ordinal regression and qualitative analysis for data interpretation. RESULTS: A total of N = 1478 participants completed the survey. Of these, n = 470 (32%) stated that they would refuse the request, whereas n = 582 (39%) would probably refuse, n = 375 (25%) would probably agree and n = 57 (4%) would definitely agree. Patient-centred arguments such as the right to self-determination increased the likelihood of consent. Concerns that PAS for chronically depressed patients might erode trust in the medical profession resulted in a decreased willingness to provide PAS. CONCLUSIONS: Participants displayed relatively low willingness to consider PAS in the case of a chronically depressed patient. This study highlights the substantial influence of theoretical medical-ethical arguments and the broader public discourse, underscoring the necessity of an ethical discussion on PAS for mental illnesses.

Introduction: Labor consolidation is not a sufficient criterion to abandon the need for the qualification and requalification of professionals, especially in the field of education, which must respond to the uncertainties of society in the light of trends and advances incorporated in pedagogical research. Methods: The present qualitative study analyzes the training demands of social education professionals from their own perspective, using their own stories in a semi-structured interview format conducted with), key informants from governmental and non-governmental organizations in southeastern Spain, specifically from the autonomous community of the region of Murcia. Results: According to the results, the most frequent and significant formative limitations are those referred to in the field of social policies, legislative training, administrative processing, specialized work in specific sectors or collectives, and mediation. Similarly, the results reveal fashion themes (mental health, gender) and reiteration of non-exclusive conditioners of social education. These are extrapolable to other areas, such as the increasing bureaucracy and complexity in the proceedings as common places in the reflection of professionals with their own initiative and commitment to their own updating that is associated with a reflective criticism of their own professionalization. Discussion: The diverse range of responses and subjects, as indicated by the numerous descriptors needed for the categorization and their respective percentages, leads us to conclude that ongoing professional training does not encourage excessive specialization. Instead, it necessitates offering a broad range of training adjusted to the versatility of situations.

Saudi Arabia has made substantial advancements in its pediatric healthcare infrastructure. However, substantial gaps persist in addressing hospitalized children's emotional safety, and psychosocial and developmental needs. Internationally, the child life profession has evolved over decades to specifically address these needs, through interventions such as therapeutic play, age-appropriate patient education, and family support. This article evaluates the imperative for integrating the child life profession into healthcare services in Saudi Arabia to transform the quality of pediatric healthcare. An analysis of the current landscape revealed gaps in pediatric psychosocial care. These gaps are listed as national priorities in the health transformation program aimed at improving healthcare quality and enhancing well-being. Integrating the child life profession can help achieve these objectives for children and families in Saudi Arabia. This article highlights the multifaceted benefits of the child life profession in improving patient experiences, healthcare delivery efficiency, pediatric healthcare quality, and the overall well-being of children and families. Strategies for phased implementation, involving healthcare institutions, academic partners, relevant non-profit partners, and policymakers, are proposed.

Introduction: Turnover of teachers is an mportant factor that impedes building and maintaining sustainable positive pedagogical practices to facilitate students' adjustment. The aim of this study was to elicit a portrait of teachers wanting to leave their profession. Methods: The research sample comprised 784 teachers from two European countries, namely 357 teachers from Latvia and 427 from Lithuania. Teachers were surveyed on their perceived stress, burnout, and intentions to leave their work alongside socio-demographic variables (age and work experience). Results: It was found that although teachers in both countries reported moderate stress and burnout levels, Lithuanian teachers indicated higher levels of two burnout dimensions, namely exhaustion and inadequacy. However, Latvian teachers indicated significantly higher turnover intentions. The portrait of teachers who intended to leave their profession was different in both countries. An unexpected finding was that Latvian teachers with a higher desire to leave their profession indicated lower stress and burnout rates. They were mostly 45-64 years old and had more than 25 years of work experience. In Lithuania, teachers' intention to leave their work was reported by older and more experienced teachers experiencing higher stress and burnout. Discussion: The findings highlight the need to consistently support the professional well-being of educators, both for committed teachers who want to stay in their profession and for those who might experience some detachment from their work at school.

BACKGROUND: Science and health outreach activities are aimed at motivating and sparking interest among prospective students to pursue careers in these fields; however, research studies supporting this hypothesis are limited. OBJECTIVE: The aim of our study was to organize an integrated Anatomy and Physiology outreach to examine preuniversity students' learning experiences (learning tools, activities, and facilitators) and motivation to pursue a career in health care and to gather evidence on their attitudes and perceptions of such activities. METHODS: A 2-day course on cardiorespiratory and gastrointestinal anatomical systems was presented at the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in Singapore using its key pedagogies, that is, multimodal practical and team-based learning. Ninety preuniversity students from 21 preuniversity institutions in Singapore participated in this 2-day course, and their experiences were evaluated using a 4-point Likert scale and open-ended survey questions. Free-text comments were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS: The survey using the 4-point Likert scale was completed by 81 (92%) of the 88 participants. Most students felt that the course materials were adequate (mean 3.57, SD 0.57) and met the learning objectives (mean 3.73, SD 0.52). The students felt that the instructors were clear (mean 3.73, SD 0.52) and effective (mean 3.70, SD 0.53). They liked the organization of the outreach session (mean 3.64, SD 0.48) and were highly motivated to study medicine or allied/biomedical sciences (mean 3.69, SD 0.54). Practical and team-based learning were regarded as exceedingly satisfactory (mean 3.63, SD 0.53 and mean 3.58, SD 0.54, respectively). All the respondents said that they would recommend this course to peers. Thematic analysis revealed that the participants gained a new perspective of the human body structure and function, they liked the unique learning settings, they were motivated to pursue a career in health care, they were satisfied with the sessions, and interactions with the facilitators increased their understanding of the human anatomy and physiology. CONCLUSIONS: Structured health outreach activities provide students with unique opportunities to experience a preclinical learning environment in a medical school, deepen their understanding of human body structure and function, and increase their motivation and interest in science. Further, outreach programs may lay the foundations for potential students aiming to pursue health profession education.

Studies on the job satisfaction of music therapists are needed for the growth of the profession and their findings may help to improve the well-being of practitioners. The aim of this cross-sectional survey was to explore the levels of satisfaction of music therapists with their profession and to identify the factors influencing their job satisfaction in several countries where this topic is under researched (Israel, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Czech Republic, and Austria). Descriptive and inferential statistics of data obtained through an online survey of 439 practicing music therapists found the highest levels of job satisfaction were reported in Spain and the lowest levels were reported in Germany. We found significant correlations among job satisfaction, satisfaction with music therapy training, and satisfaction with the perceived status of the profession. Moreover, participants´ views on "what would need to change to improve their satisfaction" with their profession were divided into 3 categories (therapists-self, workplace, and country). Participants seemed to be highly satisfied with their profession, but less satisfied with interactions with other team members, and with the perceived status of the music therapy profession. There is an overarching need for all countries (including those where music therapy is legally established as a profession) to promote the profession inside and outside the practitioners´ work settings.

INTRODUCTION: Oral physicians should possess knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for functioning in the evolving integrated care systems. Paramount for addressing the existing oral health disparities is also adequate training of non-dental health professionals in the foundations of oral health. We conducted interprofessional oral medicine-centered case conferences to prepare dental students for collaborative care and to increase awareness of non-dental students about the mouth-body connection. Herein, we share our perspective and the students' feedback about this educational program. METHODS: Students from seven health profession and social work programs attended an interactive, online oral medicine-centered case conference facilitated by an oral medicine faculty and at least one faculty from another profession. Faculty facilitators guided students to identify key points and encouraged team-based care. Anonymous, voluntary online surveys were distributed to participants immediately after each session. Descriptive data tabulated and analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 151 students participated in conferences between 11/11/2022 and 3/24/2023 and 132 (87%) submitted postexperience surveys. Students agreed that the case conference was applicable to their profession (95%) and meaningful (94%), they learned new information about other professions (94%), they could contribute to discussions (90%), interactions were respectful (99%), and discussions emphasized interprofessional collaboration (96%). Non-dental respondents learned more about oral-systemic link (95%), recognized a broader role for dentists (90%), and agreed with inclusion of more oral health content in their curricula (79%). CONCLUSION: Oral medicine-centered case conferences provided an effective curricular path for demonstrating oral-systemic connection, promoting meaningful interprofessional collaboration, and building oral health capacity among students of non-dental health professions.

Background: The way the nursing profession is perceived plays a pivotal role in shaping the public's attitude toward its members, primarily influenced by interactions with nurses and media representation. However, it can be significantly impacted by historical and traditional stereotypes, coupled with enduring gender bias and other preconceived notions. Objectives: The study aimed to examined how the title "nurse" reflects the profession's identity, perception as a female occupation, and status as a healthcare activity. It also assessed awareness of nurses' roles, education and public presence, comparing general population and patients' opinions in the Republic of Croatia. Methods: Conducted as a cross-sectional study, this research employed a structured questionnaire and a convenience sampling approach. It encompassed both the general population and patients from Croatia, with data collection spanning from February 15, 2023, to March 16, 2023, and resulting in a total sample size of 624 participants. Statistical analysis included both descriptive and inferential techniques, and significance was set at p < .01 (two-tailed). Results: A substantial proportion of respondents, amounting to 38.1%, correlate the term "nurse" with the role of the physician's assistant, whereas only 49.5% associate it with a true professional functioning within their field of work. Furthermore, 73.7% study participants perceive the nursing profession as being desirable for men. Upon examining the perspectives of the general population and patients, statistically significant differences emerged in terms of their perceptions regarding the perceived work scope (p < .001) and the level of sufficient educational attainment (p < .001) of nursing professionals. Conclusion: The analysis uncovers varying perceptions of the nursing profession in the Republic of Croatia, as well as evolving perceptions of gender diversity within nursing roles. Differing viewpoints between the general population and patients in this study emphasize the need for tailored education and communication initiatives to improve the image of nursing.

The professional development of personnel is one of highest priority task of development of both medicine as science and health system as mechanism protecting health of citizens. The public organizations are professional communities of medical specialists specializing in particular sectors of medicine that actively participate in implementation of educational measures and other initiatives targeted to support opportunities for professional growth and improving competence level of participants of these communities. The article considers examples of such initiatives as exemplified by foreign and Russian public organizations of pulmonologists and dentists.

BACKGROUND: Online modality of pedagogy was introduced in many medical institutes globally, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, these techniques were not evaluated, either with respect to effectiveness or student satisfaction in terms of promoting successful educational outcomes. The current study was conducted to identify determinants of student satisfaction with respect to online learning, in the post-pandemic era. METHODS: A pilot-tested and validated online questionnaire was administered to 370 medical/paramedical students who attended online classes during the pandemic. The students were selected randomly from four different streams of a medical university, representing all the years of study. The questionnaire included Likert-type questions and was divided into two parts: socio-demographic profile and satisfaction with online learning. RESULTS: The response rate was 81.4%. Overall satisfaction with online learning among students was 35.9% and the areas of most satisfaction for students were user-friendliness of the online portal (65.5%), self-directed responsibilities assigned to pupils (49.9%), faculty accessibility/availability (48.8%) and timely evaluation, test and feedback (47.9%). The areas of most dissatisfaction were lack of personal effect as compared to offline learning (n=71, 23.6%), effect on social life (n=54, 17.9%), and feeling of not belonging to the online session (n=38, 12.6%). Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that having previous exposure to online courses and having a separate room led to more satisfaction, whereas the emergence of health problems led to poor satisfaction with the course. The duration of previous exposure to online courses was not a statistically significant predictor of satisfaction. One or more health problems were reported by 176 (58.5%) of the respondents. Some of the common health problems reported were eye strain (72.8%), headache (56.1%), insomnia (47.2%), stress (35.2%), muscle fatigue (22.6) and tingling sensation (10.6%). CONCLUSION: Adopting a combination of online and offline approaches, i.e., blended pedagogy, involving different methods to involve students and their feedback are important to ensure student satisfaction.
