RESUMO

Anesthesia serves as a pivotal tool in modern medicine, creating a transient state of sensory deprivation to ensure a pain-free surgical or medical intervention. While proficient in alleviating pain, anesthesia significantly modulates brain dynamics, metabolic processes, and neural signaling, thereby impairing typical cognitive functions. Furthermore, anesthesia can induce notable impacts such as memory impairment, decreased cognitive function, and diminished intelligence, emphasizing the imperative need to explore the concealed repercussions of anesthesia on individuals. In this investigation, we aggregated gene expression profiles (GSE64617, GSE141242, GSE161322, GSE175894, and GSE178995) from public repositories following second-generation sequencing analysis of various anesthetics. Through scrutinizing post-anesthesia brain tissue gene expression utilizing Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (GSEA), Robust Rank Aggregation (RRA), and Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA), this research aims to pinpoint pivotal genes, pathways, and regulatory networks linked to anesthesia. This undertaking not only enhances comprehension of the physiological changes brought about by anesthesia but also lays the groundwork for future investigations, cultivating new insights and innovative perspectives in medical practice.

Considerable resources are dedicated on an annual basis to the podiatric medicine and surgery residency interview by both students and programs. Despite this, relatively little is known about student perception of the process, nor the format and content of interview. The objective of this investigation was to study and organize experiences of fourth-year podiatric medical students following the 2024 Centralized Residency Interview Program (CRIP) process. An anonymous and voluntary survey was developed and made available to fourth year podiatric medical students. It was relatively common for there to be academic, social/personal, case work-up, and rapid-fire academic question components to the interview. It was also very common to be provided with the opportunity to ask programs questions. It was relatively uncommon for there to be ethical/moral questions, personality/psychologic assessments, logic assessments, and hands-on demonstrations. The most common hands-on demonstrations were suturing, hand ties and performance of fixation principles. Relatively high yield academic topics included plain film radiography interpretation, rearfoot/ankle osseous trauma, diabetic foot infection, advanced imaging interpretation, and fixation constructs/principles. When evaluating programs, students placed high value on surgical volume, surgical variety, relative resident autonomy, program location, exposure to outpatient clinics, salary, future connections as a program alumnus, unique off-service rotations, exposure to business management/coding/billing, scope of practice, exposure to inpatient management, resident salary, and who the senior co-residents would be. The results of this investigation provide unique information for both medical students and residency programs with respect to the perception, format and content of the podiatric residency interview process.

ELONGATED HYPOCOTYL 5 (HY5) is a major light-associated transcription factor involved in plant growth and development. In Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana), the role of HY5 is very well-defined in regulating primary root growth and lateral root formation; however, information regarding its role in root hair development is still lacking, and little is known about the genetic pathways regulating this process. In this study, we investigated the role of HY5 and its associated components in root hair development. Detailed analysis of root hair phenotype in wild-type (WT) and light signaling mutants in light and dark conditions revealed the importance of light-dependent HY5-mediated root hair initiation. Altered auxin levels in the root apex of the hy5 mutant and interaction of HY5 with promoters of root hair developmental genes were responsible for differential expression of root hair developmental genes and phenotype in the hy5 mutant. The partial complementation of root hair in the hy5 mutant after external supplementation of auxin and regaining of root hair in PIN-FORMED 2 (pin2) and PIN-FORMED 2 (pin3) mutants after grafting suggested that the auxin-mediated root hair development pathway requires HY5. Furthermore, miR397b overexpression (miR397bOX) and CRISPR/Cas9-based mutants (miR397bCR) indicated miR397b targets genes encoding Reduced Residual Arabinose (RRA1/RRA2), which in turn regulate root hair growth. The regulation of the miR397b- (RRA1/RRA2) module by HY5 demonstrated its indirect role by targeting root hair cell wall genes. Together, this study demonstrated that HY5 controls root hair development by integrating auxin signalling and other miRNA-mediated pathways.

Introduction: Babesia bovis, a tick-borne apicomplexan parasite causing bovine babesiosis, remains a significant threat worldwide, and improved and practical vaccines are needed. Previous studies defined the members of the rhoptry associated protein-1 (RAP-1), and the neutralization-sensitive rhoptry associated protein-1 related antigen (RRA) superfamily in B. bovis, as strong candidates for the development of subunit vaccines. Both RAP-1 and RRA share conservation of a group of 4 cysteines and amino acids motifs at the amino terminal end (NT) of these proteins. Methods and results: Sequence comparisons among the RRA sequences of several B. bovis strains and other Babesia spp parasites indicate a high level of conservation of a 15-amino acid (15-mer) motif located at the NT of the protein. BlastP searches indicate that the 15-mer motif is also present in adenylate cyclase, dynein, and other ATP binding proteins. AlphaFold2 structure predictions suggest partial exposure of the 15-mer on the surface of RRA of three distinct Babesia species. Antibodies in protected cattle recognize a synthetic peptide representing the 15-mer motif sequence in iELISA, and rabbit antibodies against the 15-mer react with the surface of free merozoites in immunofluorescence. Discussion and conclusion: The presence of the 15-mer-like regions in dynein and ATP-binding proteins provides a rationale for investigating possible functional roles for RRA. The demonstrated presence of a surface exposed B-cell epitope in the 15-mer motif of the B. bovis RRA, which is recognized by sera from protected bovines, supports its inclusion in future subunit epitope-based vaccines against B. bovis.

Aberrant mRNA expression is implicated in uterine corpus endometrial carcinoma (UCEC) oncogenesis and progression. However, effective prognostic biomarkers for UCEC remain limited. We aimed to construct a reliable multi-gene risk model using gene expression profiles. Utilizing TCGA data (543 UCEC samples, 35 controls), we identified 1517 differentially acting genes. Weighted gene co-expression complex analysis (WGCCA), hub gene screening, and risk regression analysis (RRA) were employed to determine prognosis-related genes and construct the risk model. Nomograms visualized risk scores and receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curves assessed model performance. Seven novel prognosis-related hub genes (ANGPT1, ASB2, GAL, GDF7, ONECUT2, SV2B, TRPC6) were identified. The model's concordance index (C index) by multivariate Cox regression analysis was 0.79. ROC curves yielded AUCs of 0.811 (3-year) and 0.79 (5-year), demonstrating the model's efficacy in predicting UCEC survival. Our study proposes a promising seven-biomarker risk model for predicting UCEC prognosis, offering potential clinical utility.

Objectives: The SPIDER technique for hybrid thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair can avoid thoracotomy and extracorporeal circulation. To improve technical feasibility and safety, the new Thoracoflo graft, consisting of a proximal stent graft connected to a 7-branched abdominal prosthesis, was evaluated in a pig model for technical feasibility testing, before implantation in humans. Methods: Retroperitoneal exposure of the infradiaphragmatic aorta, including visceral and renal arteries, was performed in 7 pigs (75-85 kg). One iliac branch was temporarily attached to the distal aorta to maintain retrograde visceral and antegrade iliac perfusion after deployment of the thoracic stent graft segment (SPIDER technique). The proximal stent-grafted segment was deployed in the thoracic aorta via direct aortic puncture over the wire without fluoroscopy. The graft was deaired before flow via the iliac side branch to the visceral and iliac arteries was established. Visceral, renal, and lumbar arteries were subsequently sutured to the corresponding side branches of the graft. Technical feasibility, operating and clamping time, blood flow, and tissue perfusion in the related organs were evaluated before implantation and after 3 and 6 hours using transit-time flow measurement and fluorescent microspheres. Final angiography or postprocedural computed tomography angiography were performed. Results: Over-the-wire graft deployment was successful in 6 animals without hemodynamic alteration (P = n.s.). In 1 pig, the proximal stent graft section migrated as the guidewire was not removed, as recommended, before release of the proximal fixation wire. Angiography and computed tomography scan confirmed successful graft implantation and transit-time flow measurement confirmed good visceral and iliac blood flow. Fluorescent microspheres confirmed good spinal cord perfusion. Conclusions: Over-the-wire implantation of the Thoracoflo graft using the SPIDER technique is feasible in a pig model. No fluoroscopy was required. For safe implantation, it is mandatory to follow the single steps of implantation.

Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) is a life-threatening cardiopulmonary disease lacking specific diagnostic markers and targeted therapy, and its mechanism of development remains to be elucidated. The present study aimed to explore novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets in IPAH by integrated bioinformatics analysis. Four eligible datasets (GSE117261, GSE15197, GSE53408, GSE48149) was firstly downloaded from GEO database and subsequently integrated by Robust rank aggregation (RRA) method to screen robust differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Then functional annotation of robust DEGs was performed by GO and KEGG enrichment analysis. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was constructed followed by using MCODE and CytoHubba plug-in to identify hub genes. Finally, 10 hub genes were screened including ENO1, TALDO1, TXNRD1, SHMT2, IDH1, TKT, PGD, CXCL10, CXCL9, and CCL5. The GSE113439 dataset was used as a validation cohort to appraise these hub genes and TXNRD1 was selected for verification at the protein level. The experiment results confirmed that serum TXNRD1 concentration was lower in IPAH patients and the level of TXNRD1 had great predictive efficiency (AUC:0.795) as well as presents negative correlation with mean pulmonary arterial pressure (mPAP) and pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR). Consistently, the expression of TXNRD1 was proved to be inhibited in animal and cellular model of PAH. In addition, GSEA analysis was performed to explore the functions of TXNRD1 and the results revealed that TXNRD1 was closely correlated with mTOR signaling pathway, MYC targets, and unfolded protein response. Finally, knockdown of TXNRD1 was shown to exacerbate proliferative disorder, migration and apoptosis resistance in PASMCs. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that TXNRD1 is a promising candidate biomarker for diagnosis of IPAH and plays an important role in PAH pathogenesis, although further research is necessary.

BACKGROUND: Reactive risk assessments (RRAs) such as incident reporting and root cause analysis (RCA), as well as proactive risk assessments (PRAs) such as failure mode and effects analysis, are generally conducted independently in health care. Literature promotes combining risk assessment techniques. This concept builds on previous methodologies and presents an innovative, scalable, and generalizable risk assessment methodology. METHODS: A Combined Proactive Risk Assessment (CPRA) technique entails combining incident reports (RRAs), combining proactive risk assessments (PRAs), and merging components of PRA and RRA. Using specific keywords, this technique aligns patient safety reporting data with process steps and failure modes to assess risk within any of the process steps. This technique was tested by using PRAs from several Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities and national patient safety data from the VHA National Center for Patient Safety's database. Reported events and RCAs related to the outpatient blood draw process were used for this illustration. Repeatability was determined by independently applying the technique to two years of data and auditing results. RESULTS: Aggregating PRAs from multiple facilities identified 220% more failure modes; and integrating incident reports into PRA identified 310% more failure modes than the single facility average. Overlaying safety reports onto a comprehensive process flow diagram revealed that 85.8% of events occurred in three of seven process steps. Accuracy of this technique was generally above 85%. CONCLUSION: This technique is promising for identifying vulnerable points in health care processes or to compliment a traditional PRA. Single PRAs are less likely to identify all potential failures or focus on the most hazardous process steps. This technique may aid in assessing key health care processes at an enterprise level.

The residual reduction algorithm (RRA) in OpenSim is designed to improve dynamic consistency of kinematics and ground reaction forces in movement simulations of musculoskeletal models. RRA requires the user to select numerous tracking weights for the joint kinematics to reduce residual errors. Selection is often performed manually, which can be time-consuming and is unlikely to yield optimal tracking weights. A multi-heuristic optimization algorithm was used to expedite tracking weight decision making to reduce residual errors. This method produced more rigorous results than manual iterations and although the total computation time was not significantly reduced, this method does not require the user to monitor the algorithm's progress to find a solution, thereby reducing manual tuning. Supporting documentation and code to implement this optimization is freely provided to assist the community with developing movement simulations.

Lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), one of the most common pathological subtypes in lung cancer, has been of concern because it is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Due to its poor prognosis, to identify a prognostic biomarker, this study performed an integrative analysis to screen curial RNAs and discuss their cross-talks. The messenger RNA (mRNA) profiles were primarily screened using robust rank aggregation (RRA) through several datasets, and these deregulated genes showed important roles in multiple biological pathways, especially for cell cycle and oocyte meiosis. Then, 31 candidate genes were obtained via integrating 12 algorithms, and 16 hub genes (containing homologous genes) were further screened according to the potential prognostic values. These hub genes were used to search their regulators and biological-related microRNAs (miRNAs). In this way, 10 miRNAs were identified as candidate small RNAs associated with LUAD, and then miRNA-related long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) were further obtained. In-depth analysis showed that 4 hub mRNAs, 2 miRNAs, and 2 lncRNAs were potential crucial RNAs in the occurrence and development of cancer, and a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) network was then constructed. Finally, we identified CCNA2/MKI67/KIF11:miR-30a-5p:VPS9D1-AS1 axis-related cell cycle as a prognostic biomarker, which provided RNA cross-talks among mRNAs and non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), especially at the multiple isomiR levels that further complicated the coding-non-coding RNA regulatory network. Our findings provide insight into complex cross-talks among diverse RNAs particularly involved in isomiRs, which will enrich our understanding of mRNA-ncRNA interactions in coding-non-coding RNA regulatory networks and their roles in tumorigenesis.

OBJECTIVES: Resident-to-resident elder mistreatment (R-REM) between residents living in residential aged care (RAC) services is a challenging issue in relation to the care of older people. Evidence suggests that R-REM, such as verbal, physical, and sexual conflict between residents, is a common and pervasive issue. This review examines the frequency with which R-REM occurs in RAC services; identifies the types of R-REM that occur; and provides an overview of the reported characteristics of both the victim and perpetrator involved in the R-REM event. DESIGN: A systematic review was conducted. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Ageline, and Cochrane Library to identify qualitative and quantitative studies published in the English language. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Residents living in RAC services. MEASURES: Data on frequency and characteristics were collated, and aggregate proportions were calculated where possible. RESULTS: Twenty-six studies were identified; most (n = 20) were published in the United States. The overall proportion of residents engaged in R-REM was provided by 7 quantitative studies with the estimated frequency reported to be 12% to 23%. For qualitative studies, the number of care staff reporting to have observed R-REM ranged from 18.7% to 98.0%. Physical and verbal abuse were the most commonly reported types of mistreatment. Characteristics of the perpetrator of R-REM were reported in 12 (46.2%) studies. Overall, the mean age of perpetrators was 80.93 years, most were men (83.2%), and 64.4% had dementia and/or Alzheimer diagnosis. Characteristics of the victim and the history of R-REM were largely omitted from the published studies. CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATIONS: The findings from the review broaden understanding on the extent of R-REM; the individual and event characteristics and ultimately support care planning, policy, and direction for future research. To improve understanding, quality of care, and RAC residents' well-being, further studies are recommended to address the identified gaps in knowledge.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian cancer (OV) is a highly lethal disease, and the fifth leading cause of all cancer-related deaths in women. The study aimed to identify potential key genes associated with the proliferation and prognosis of OV. METHODS: Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between ovarian cancer and normal tissues were screened by the robust rank aggregation (RRA) method. The expression of CENPA and MYBL2 were examined in SKOV3 and A2780 ovarian cancer cell lines and tumor tissues by qRT-PCR and western blot. Small RNA interference assays, plasmid overexpression assays and EdU assays were used to validate the proliferative effect of the MYBL2-CENPA axis in ovarian cancer cell lines. The ChIP assay was used to verify the direct regulation of MYBL2 on CENPA. RESULTS: 133 up-regulated genes and 158 down-regulated genes were identified, and the up-regulated genes mainly enrichment in cell cycle. The three up-regulated gene with DNA separation (CENPA, CENPF and CEP55) might be tightly correlated with proliferation and prognosis of OV. Knockdown CENPA expression inhibited the proliferation of A2780 and SKOV3 cells After the knockout of MYBL2, the expression of CENPA significantly decreased. MYBL2 directly binds to the promoter region of CENPA. CONCLUSIONS: The MYBL2-CENPA pathway plays an important role in the proliferation of ovarian cancer cells, suggesting that this pathway may be a potential target for the treatment of ovarian cancer.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CCRCC) is a typical type of RCC with the worst prognosis among the common epithelial neoplasms of the kidney. However, its molecular pathogenesis remains unknown. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to screen for effective and potential pathogenic biomarkers of CCRCC. The gene expression profile of the GSE16441, GSE36895, GSE40435, GSE46699, GSE66270 and GSE71963 datasets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. First, the limma package in R language was used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in each dataset. The robust and strong DEGs were explored using the robust rank aggregation method. A total of 980 markedly robust DEGs were identified (429 upregulated and 551 downregulated). According to Gene Ontology and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis, these DEGs exhibited an obvious enrichment in various cancer-related biological pathways and functions. The Search Tool for the Retrieval of Interacting Genes/Proteins database was used for the construction of a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, the Cytoscape MCODE plug-in for module analysis and the cytoHubba plug-in to identify hub genes from the aforementioned DEGs. A total of four key modules were identified in the PPI network. A total of six hub genes, including C-X-C motif chemokine ligand 12, bradykinin receptor B2, adenylate cyclase 7, calcium sensing receptor (CASR), kininogen 1 and lysophosphatidic acid receptor 5, were identified. The DEG results of the hub genes were verified using The Cancer Genome Atlas database, and CASR was found to be significantly associated with the prognosis of patients with CCRCC. In conclusion, the present study provided new insight and potential biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of CCRCC.

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is a very serious mortality of central nervous system cancer. The microarray data from GSE2223, GSE4058, GSE4290, GSE13276, GSE68848 and GSE70231 (389 GBM tumour and 67 normal tissues) and the RNA-seq data from TCGA-GBM dataset (169 GBM and five normal samples) were chosen to find differentially expressed genes (DEGs). RRA (Robust rank aggregation) method was used to integrate seven datasets and calculate 133 DEGs (82 up-regulated and 51 down-regulated genes). Subsequently, through the PPI (protein-protein interaction) network and MCODE/ cytoHubba methods, we finally filtered out ten hub genes, including FOXM1, CDK4, TOP2A, RRM2, MYBL2, MCM2, CDC20, CCNB2, MYC and EZH2, from the whole network. Functional enrichment analyses of DEGs were conducted to show that these hub genes were enriched in various cancer-related functions and pathways significantly. We also selected CCNB2, CDC20 and MYBL2 as core biomarkers, and further validated them in CGGA, HPA and CCLE database, suggesting that these three core hub genes may be involved in the origin of GBM. All these potential biomarkers for GBM might be helpful for illustrating the important role of molecular mechanisms of tumorigenesis in the diagnosis, prognosis and targeted therapy of GBM cancer.

Respiration rate (RR) is a critical vital sign that provides early detection of respiratory compromise. The acoustic technique of measuring continuous respiration rate (RRa) interprets the large airway sound envelope to calculate respiratory rate while pulse oximetry-derived respiratory rate (RRoxi) interprets modulations of the photoplethsymograph in response to hemodynamic changes during the respiratory cycle. The aim of this study was to compare the performance of these technologies to each other and to a capnography-based reference device. Subjects were asked to decrease their RR from 14 to 4 breaths per minute (BPM) and then increase RR from 14 to 24 BPM. The effects of physiological noise, ambient noise, and head movement and shallow breathing on device performance were also evaluated. The test devices were: (1) RRa, Radical-7 (Masimo Corporation), (2) RRoxi, Nellcor™ Bedside Respiratory Patient Monitoring System (Medtronic), and (3) reference device, Capnostream20p™ (Medtronic). All devices were configured with their default settings. Twenty-nine healthy adult subjects were included in the study. During abrupt changes in breathing, overall RRoxi was accurate for longer periods of time than RRa; specifically, RRoxi was more accurate during low and normal RR, but not during high RR. RRoxi also displayed a value for significantly longer time periods than RRa when the subjects produced physiological sounds and moved their heads, but not during shallow breathing or ambient noise. RRoxi may be more accurate than RRa during development of bradypnea. Also, RRoxi may display a more reliable RR value during routine patient activities.

Cotton fibre provides a unicellular model system for studying cell expansion and secondary cell wall deposition. Mature cotton fibres are mainly composed of cellulose while the walls of developing fibre cells contain a variety of polysaccharides and proteoglycans required for cell expansion. This includes hydroxyproline-rich glycoproteins (HRGPs) comprising the subgroup, extensins. In this study, extensin occurrence in cotton fibres was assessed using carbohydrate immunomicroarrays, mass spectrometry and monosaccharide profiling. Extensin amounts in three species appeared to correlate with fibre quality. Fibre cell expression profiling of the four cotton cultivars, combined with extensin arabinoside chain length measurements during fibre development, demonstrated that arabinoside side-chain length is modulated during development. Implications and mechanisms of extensin side-chain length dynamics during development are discussed.

Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype of breast cancer with poor clinical outcomes and lack of approved targeted therapy. Dysregulated microRNAs (miRNAs) have been considered a promising biomarker, which plays an important role in the tumorigenesis of human cancer. Due to the increase in miRNA profiling datasets of TNBC, a proper analysis is required for studying. Therefore, this study used meta-analysis to amalgamate ten miRNA profiling studies of TNBC. By the robust rank aggregation method, metasignatures of six miRNAs (4 upregulated: hsa-miR-135b-5p, hsa-miR-18a-5p, hsa-miR-9-5p and hsa-miR-522-3p; 2 downregulated: hsa-miR-190b and hsa-miR-449a) were obtained. The gene ontology analysis revealed that target genes regulated by miRNAs were associated with processes like the regulation of transcription, DNA dependent, and signal transduction. Also, it is noted from the pathway analysis that signaling and cancer pathways were associated with the progression of TNBC. A Naïve Bayes-based classifier built with miRNA signatures discriminates TNBC and non-TNBC samples in test data set with high diagnostic sensitivity and specificity. From the analysis carried out by the study, it is suggested that the identified miRNAs are of great importance in improving the diagnostics and therapeutics for TNBC.

BACKGROUND: Respiration monitoring is necessary during sedation for dental treatment. Recently, acoustic respiration rate (RRa™), an acoustics-based respiration monitoring method, has been used in addition to auscultation or capnography. The accuracy of this method may be compromised in an environment with excessive noise. This study evaluated whether noise from the ultrasonic scaler affects the performance of RRa in respiratory rate measurement. METHODS: We analyzed data from 49 volunteers who underwent scaling under intravenous sedation. Clinical tests were divided into preparation, sedation, and scaling periods; respiratory rate was measured at 2-s intervals for 3 min in each period. Missing values ratios of the RRa during each period were measuerd; correlation analysis and Bland-Altman analysis were performed on respiratory rates measured by RRa and capnogram. RESULTS: Respective missing values ratio from RRa were 5.62%, 8.03%, and 23.95% in the preparation, sedation, and scaling periods, indicating an increased missing values ratio in the scaling period (P < 0.001). Correlation coefficients of the respiratory rate, measured with two different methods, were 0.692, 0.677, and 0.562 in each respective period. Mean capnography-RRa biases in Bland-Altman analyses were -0.03, -0.27, and -0.61 in each respective period (P < 0.001); limits of agreement were -4.84-4.45, -4.89-4.15, and -6.18-4.95 (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The probability of missing respiratory rate values was higher during scaling when RRa was used for measurement. Therefore, the use of RRa alone for respiration monitoring during ultrasonic scaling may not be safe.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Here we review the current state of multicenter radiology research (MRR), and utilize a survey of experienced researchers to identify common advantages, barriers, and resources to guide future investigators. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Association of University Radiologists established a Radiology Research Alliance task force, Multi-center Research Studies in Radiology, composed of 12 society members to review MRR. A REDCap survey was designed to gain more insight from experienced researchers. Recipients were authors identified from a PubMed database search, utilizing search terms "multicenter" or "multisite" and "radiology." The survey included investigator background information, reasons why, barriers to, and resources that investigators found helpful in conducting or participating in MRR. RESULTS: The survey was completed by 23 of 80 recipients (29%), the majority (76%) of whom served as a primary investigator on at least one MRR project. Respondents reported meeting collaborators at national or international (74%) and society (39%) meetings. The most common perceived advantages of MRR were increased sample size (100%) and improved generalizability (91%). External funding was considered the most significant barrier to MRR, reported by 26% of respondents. Institutional funding, setting up a central picture archiving and communication system, and setting up a central database were considered a significant barrier by 30%, 22%, and 22% of respondents, respectively. Resources for overcoming barriers included motivated staff (74%), strong leadership (70%), regular conference calls (57%), and at least one face-to-face meeting (57%). CONCLUSIONS: Barriers to MRR include funding and establishing a central database and a picture archiving and communication system. Upon embarking on an MRR project, forming a motivated team who meets and speaks regularly is essential.
