RESUMO

In this study, we discuss for the first time the relationships between the diversity of the bacterial population and of the metals and metalloids concentrations in the sediments of the Red River Delta, Vietnam. The analysis of the 16S rRNA by the Illumina technology revealed a diversified population and a potential of bioremediation by the microorganisms, notably by the Bacilli relatively abundant in the Bach Dang estuary, where high metals and metalloids concentrations were highlighted. This work offers new information on the environmental context of the delta and highlights the potential impact that metals and metalloids may have on the bacterial population. Further investigations on the role of the bacteria in the biogeochemistry of this ecosystem will be of interest for the development of bioremediation processes.

RESUMO

While economic growth and food security in Vietnam's Red River Delta are heavily reliant on agriculture, the intensive use of agricultural land has resulted in various negative impacts on the environment, such as soil degradation, water pollution, biodiversity loss, and health effects on humans and animals. The current situation emphasizes an increased need for sustainable agriculture practices in the region. Understanding farmers' decision-making processes and identifying factors that influence their choices is crucial in order to promote their adoption of sustainable agriculture practices. This study examines the impact of attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, age, and gender on farmers' intention to adopt sustainable agriculture practices using the Theory of Planned Behavior and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling. The results show that attitude towards sustainable agriculture practices showed a path coefficient of 0.310 (p < 0.001), and perceived behavioral control had a coefficient of 0.305 (p < 0.001), indicating strong positive relationships with intention. However, subjective norms, despite a positive coefficient, did not significantly affect intentions (path coefficient 0.099, p > 0.05). Age was found to have a moderating effect; older farmers are less likely to adopt sustainable agriculture practices compared to their younger counterparts. Gender, however, did not present a significant influence. In light of these findings, policymakers face a challenge in creating incentives to encourage farmers' engagement in sustainable agriculture practices in the Red River Delta and at the same time discourage youth out-migration from the agricultural sector more generally. Overall, this study enriches our theoretical understanding of the factors influencing sustainable agriculture adoption in developing countries and offers practical insights for policymakers and agricultural stakeholders in the Red River Delta to promote more effective and targeted sustainable agriculture practices.

RESUMO

The soaring economic development of export activities of handicrafts centralized in emerging urban regions in Vietnam has accelerated the increase in the occurrence of diseases and threats to ecosystems induced by water pollution. We design a discrete choice experiment to elicit the willingness-to-pay of handicraft enterprises to restore the environment and diminish health risks from polluted wastewater through water quality improvement under different scenarios. Estimates from five latent classes reveal that one-half of entrepreneurs strongly value the provision of wastewater treatment services, and their decisions are mostly driven by preferences to reduce the risk of sickness caused by water pollution. This finding lends support to the argument that self-interested preferences predominate pro-environmental behavior in the readiness to pay for water quality services. While entrepreneurs' preferences attributed to ecological remediation seem to vary according to their educational background, the status-quo group shows low environmental awareness. This divergent behavioral pattern suggests that the design of wastewater management policies requires a mixture of measures that aim at different groups of individuals pursuing economic incentives and the creation of awareness.

RESUMO

In the present study, concentrations of 23 metallic elements (Al, Fe, K, Mg, Ti, Mn, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, As, Sr, Zr, Mo, Cd, Ba, W, Hg, Pb and U) were determined in superficial sediments from 20 sites within the Tien Hai nature reserve of the Red River delta. An integrated approach including correlation analysis (CA), principal components analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) was combined to identify and quantify the sources of these metals. The results indicated that the correlation analysis was able to identify both allochthonous and authigenous origin of metals while the remaining methods were unable to identify these origins. With the help of CA, the PMF model performed better at the source identification of metals than the PCA. The results of PMF demonstrated that weathering products formed on different parent rocks were the biggest contributor to natural sources of metals in the superficial sediments, while agricultural activities were regarded as the major contributor to anthropogenic sources of metals. These findings could provide a scientific basis for environmental protection authority to prevent and control the sediment metal pollution. Accordingly, application of organic amendments and reduction of inorganic fertilizer should be encouraged to minimize metal accumulation in sediments.

RESUMO

A new green method for trace level quantification of four herbicides, glyphosate (GLYP), glufosinate (GLUF), and their main metabolites, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) and 3-(methyl-phosphinico)-propionic acid (MPPA), was developed. The purification step without any derivatization was conducted by solid-phase extraction using Chelex-100 resin in the Fe (III) form, followed by elution with 5% NH4OH. The four analytes were quantified by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry. The developed extraction method was validated on five fresh and sea water matrices with mean recoveries ranging from 80.1% to 109.4% (relative standard deviation < 20%). The extraction conditions were evaluated and certified for the high applicability of the extraction method too. The limits of detection (ng/L) in the five water matrices were in ranges 0.70 - 4.0, 2.4 - 3.9, 1.8 - 4.7, and 1.6 - 4.0 for GLYP, AMPA, GLUF, and MPPA, respectively. The method was successfully applied to detect the four compounds in surface waters sampled along the Red River Delta region in July 2019. The highest concentrations were detected at 565, 1,330, 234, and 871 ng/L for GLYP, AMPA, GLUF, and MPPA, respectively. These results showed the potential capacity of this new method for convenient monitoring of herbicides and their metabolites in the diverse natural water system.

RESUMO

Local questionnaire surveys were conducted to collect representative activity data for calculation of annual emissions from residential combustion in Red River Delta (RRD), Vietnam, for 2010-2015. Multistage statistical sampling was implemented in the surveys for Hanoi Metropolitan Region (HMR) and deep rural area of Ninh Binh province (Con Thoi, Ninh Binh (CTNB)). Emission factors were scrutinized to select relevant ranges and central values for typical cookstoves in RRD. Large differences in the activity data (cooking activities, fuel-stove types, and fuel consumption) were found between three HMR strata (urban, suburban, and rural populations) and CTNB, respectively, which resulted in distinctly different annual emissions per capita. Annual 2010 emissions from residential combustion in RRD were estimated for toxic pollutants, in Gg/year, of 217 for CO, 1.5 NOx, 7.4 SO2, 33 NMVOC, 3.7 NH3, 16.9 PM2.5, 1.4 BC, and 7.1 OC, along with 171 t/year of total PAHs with 0.7 t/year of BaP, and greenhouse gases of 5395 CO2, 17.2 CH4, and 0.7 N2O Gg/year. Emissions increased by 1.5-7.8%, varying with species, over the 6-year period. Prevalent use of crop residue in CTNB induced its dominant shares in the residential combustion emissions not only in this deep rural area but also in the entire RRD domain. Spatial emission distribution exhibited high intensities over districts having high rural population density. Global warming potential results indicated the dominant role of black carbon, especially over the 20-year horizon. Switching from solid fuels to liquefied petroleum gas would reduce the emissions from this sector and bring in multiple benefits.

RESUMO

Radioactivity concentrations of nuclides of the 232Th and 238U radioactive chains and 40K, 90Sr, 137Cs, and 239+240Pu were surveyed for raw and cooked food of the population in the Red River delta region, Vietnam, using α-, γ-spectrometry, and liquid scintillation counting techniques. The concentration of 40K in the cooked food was the highest compared to those of other radionuclides ranging from (23 ± 5) (rice) to (347 ± 50) Bq kg-1 dw (tofu). The 210Po concentration in the cooked food ranged from its limit of detection (LOD) of 5 mBq kg-1 dw (rice) to (4.0 ± 1.6) Bq kg-1 dw (marine bivalves). The concentrations of other nuclides of the 232Th and 238U chains in the food were low, ranging from LOD of 0.02 Bq kg-1 dw to (1.1 ± 0.3) Bq kg-1 dw. The activity concentrations of 90Sr, 137Cs, and 239+240Pu in the food were minor compared to that of the natural radionuclides. The average annual committed effective dose to adults in the study region was estimated and it ranged from 0.24 to 0.42 mSv a-1 with an average of 0.32 mSv a-1, out of which rice, leafy vegetable, and tofu contributed up to 16.2%, 24.4%, and 21.3%, respectively. The committed effective doses to adults due to ingestion of regular diet in the Red River delta region, Vietnam are within the range determined in other countries worldwide. This finding suggests that Vietnamese food is safe for human consumption with respect to radiation exposure.

RESUMO

Paddy Rice is the prevalent land cover in the mosaicked landscape of the Hanoi Capital Region, Vietnam. In this study, we map double and single crop rice in Hanoi using a random forest algorithm and a time-series of Sentinel-1 SAR imagery at 10 and 20 m resolution using VV-only, VH-only, and both polarizations. We compare spatial and areal variation and quantify input band importance, estimate crop growth stages, estimate rice field/collective metrics using Fragstats with image segmentation, and highlight the importance of the results for land use and land cover. Results suggest double crop rice ranged from 208 000 to 220 000 ha with 20-m resolution imagery accounting for the most area in all polarizations. Based on accuracy assessment, we found 10 m data for VV/VH to have highest overall accuracy (93.5%, ±1.33%), while VV at 10 and 20 m had lowest overall accuracies (90.9%, ±1.57; 91.0%, ±2.75). Mean decrease in accuracy suggests for all but VV at 10 m, data from harvest and flooding stages are most critical for classification. Results suggest 20 m data for both VV and VH overestimates rice land cover, however 20 m data may be indicative of rice land use. Analysis of growing season suggests average estimated length of 93-104 days for each season. Commune-level results suggest up to 20% coefficient of variation between VV10m and VH10m with significant spatial variation in rice area. Landscape metrics show rice fields are typically plantedin groups of 3-4 fields with over 796 000 collectives and 2.69 millionfields estimated in the study area.

RESUMO

Analysis of over 500 groundwater samples from throughout the Red River Delta indicates de-coupling of dissolved arsenic (As) and dissolved iron (Fe). Sorting of all data along the redox potentials suggests re-adsorption of As released initially from Mn(IV)-oxyhydroxides and later from Fe(III)-oxyhydroxides on remaining ferric phases at moderate redox levels. A gradually decreasing specific surface area available for re-adsorption of As probably plays a role as a consequence of limited reactivity of more crystalline phases such as goethite and hematite. At low redox levels, concentrations of Fe and phosphate decrease, but As concentrations keep increasing and most As is present as As(III) with limited adsorption affinity. Based on the results of speciation modeling, the water is supersaturated with respect to siderite and vivianite. A general conceptual model of As and Fe behavior is presented, suggesting that coupled behavior is possible in two geochemical "windows", i.e., 1: between saturation of remaining adsorption sites and the onset of siderite and vivianite precipitation, and 2: after the beginning of secondary sulfide phases precipitation and during methanogenesis. The de-coupling of As from Fe is common and has been observed at many sites around the world where As is released as a consequence of redox processes, e.g., in Bangladesh, West Bengal and Assam in India, the Mekong Delta in Cambodia and Vietnam, and Taiwan. The presented general conceptual model of de-coupling processes can be applied to the interpretation of As and Fe data, and, thus, it can help in the preparation of a site conceptual model which is a necessary prerequisite for reactive transport modeling.

RESUMO

Planktons are a major component of food web structure in aquatic ecosystems. Their distribution and community structure are driven by the combination and interactions between physical, chemical, and biological factors within the environment. In the present study, water quality and the community structure of phytoplankton and zooplankton were monthly investigated from January to December 2015 at 11 sampling sites along the gradient course of the Day River (Red River Delta, northern Vietnam). The study demonstrated that the Day River was eutrophic with the average values of total phosphorus concentration 0.17 mg/L, total nitrogen concentration 1.98 mg/L, and Chl a 54 µg/L. Microscopic plankton analysis showed that phytoplankton comprised 87 species belonging to seven groups in which Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, and Cyanobacteria accounted for the most important constituents of the river's phytoplankton assemblage. A total 53 zooplankton species belonging to three main groups including Copepoda, Cladocera, and Rotatoria were identified. Plankton biomass values were greatest in rainy season (3002.10-3 cell/L for phytoplankton and 12.573 individuals/m3 for zooplankton). Using principal correspondence and Pearson correlation analyses, it was found that the Day River was divided into three main site groups based on water quality and characteristics of plankton community. Temperature and nutrients (total phosphorus and total nitrogen) are key factors regulating plankton abundance and distribution in the Day River.

RESUMO

Heavy metal contamination of soil and sediment in estuaries warrants study because a healthy estuarine environment, including healthy soil, is important in order to achieve ecological balance and good aquaculture production. The Ba Lat estuary of the Red River is the largest estuary in northern Vietnam and is employed in various land uses. However, the heavy metal contamination of its soil has not yet been reported. The following research was conducted to clarify contamination levels, supply sources, and the effect of land use on heavy metal concentrations in the estuary. Soil samples were collected from the top soil layer of the estuary, and their arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) concentrations were analyzed, as were other soil properties. Most soils in the estuary were loam, silt loam, or sandy loam. The pH was neutral, and the cation exchange capacity ranged from 3.8 to 20 cmol·kg-1. Manganese and iron concentrations averaged 811 µg·g-1 and 1.79%, respectively. The magnitude of the soil heavy metal concentrations decreased in the order of Zn > Pb > Cr > Cu > As > Cd. The concentrations were higher in the riverbed and mangrove forest than in other land-use areas. Except for As, the mean heavy metal concentrations were lower than the permissible levels for agricultural soils in Vietnam. The principal component analyses suggested that soil As, Pb, Zn, Cd, and Cu were of anthropogenic origin, whereas Cr was of non-anthropogenic origin. The spatial distribution of concentration with land use indicated that mangrove forests play an important role in preventing the spread of heavy metals to other land uses and in maintaining the estuarine environment.

RESUMO

This study addresses the tradeoff between Vietnam's national poultry vaccination program, which implemented an annual two-round HPAI H5N1 vaccination program for the entire geographical area of the Red River Delta during the period from 2005-2010, and an alternative vaccination program which would involve vaccination for every production cycle at the recommended poultry age in high risk areas within the Delta. The ex ante analysis framework was applied to identify the location of areas with high probability of HPAI H5N1 occurrence for the alternative vaccination program by using boosted regression trees (BRT) models, followed by weighted overlay operations. Cost-effectiveness of the vaccination programs was then estimated to measure the tradeoff between the past national poultry vaccination program and the alternative vaccination program. Ex ante analysis showed that the focus areas for the alternative vaccination program included 1137 communes, corresponding to 50.6% of total communes in the Delta, and located primarily in the coastal areas to the east and south of Hanoi. The cost-effectiveness analysis suggested that the alternative vaccination program would have been more successful in reducing the rate of disease occurrence and the total cost of vaccinations, as compared to the national poultry vaccination program.
