RESUMO

Chronic nonbacterial osteomyelitis (CNO) is an uncommon autoinflammatory disorder. Significant effort has recently been spent to better define and treat this disorder including development of consensus treatment protocols, validate disease activity tools, and refining classification criteria. However, the underlying immunopathogenesis of the disease remains elusive. In this report, we describe the simultaneous onset of CNO in siblings. A pathogenic gene mutation was not identified, and these sisters lacked a similar biomarker profile. This report highlights that if a genetic predisposition for CNO exists, it may be related to complex polygenic or multifactorial mechanisms of disease evolution.

BACKGROUND: The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (NSDTR) has previously been highlighted as a breed at risk for developing immune mediated diseases and cancer. The immune response is of great importance for the development of neoplastic disease and a dysregulated immune response may predispose to cancer. Two of the commonly seen immune mediated diseases in NSDTRs are immune mediated rheumatic disease (IMRD), which bears similarities to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) affecting humans, and steroid-responsive meningitis-arteritis (SRMA), which is a non-infectious inflammation of the meninges and the leptomeningeal vessels. The aim of this survey study was to investigate the lifetime prevalence of immune mediated diseases and tumors among Swedish NSDTRs based on owners' information. The study design was cross-sectional. A questionnaire was sent to 4102 persons who owned or had previously owned a NSDTR. The questions concerned information about the dog and its overall health status as well as specific diseases. RESULTS: The response rate was 30%, including 935 live NSDTRs, corresponding to approximately 20% of the current population registered in Sweden (n = 4564), and 177 dead dogs. The surveyed dogs were spread over different ages and sex and corresponded to the typical demographic profile of the general dog population. Of the 935 individuals that were alive, 28 dogs (3%) were reported as previously diagnosed with IMRD and 33 dogs (3.5%) were reported as previously diagnosed with SRMA, one dog was reported to have been diagnosed with both SRMA and IMRD. There were 129 dogs (14%) reported to have or have had a neoplasia of some kind. For the dead dogs (n = 177), almost 40% of the owners reported neoplasia as the main reason for death/euthanasia. CONCLUSION: This study reports an estimated lifetime prevalence of IMRD and SRMA, in the studied population of Swedish NSDTRs, of 3.0 and 3.5% respectively. In this study, 14% of the living dogs (n = 935) were reported to have a neoplasia of some kind and almost 40% of the deceased dogs (n = 177) were euthanized due to neoplasia or suspicion of it.

In 1979, it became recognized in the literature that what we call hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) was a nonmalignant disease of histiocytes. Subsequently a familial form and a secondary form of HLH were differentiated. When HLH is secondary to an autoimmune disease, rheumatologists refer to this entity as macrophage activation syndrome (MAS) to differentiate it from HLH itself. Although the first cases of MAS likely appeared in the literature in the 1970s, it was not until 1985 that the term activated macrophages was used to describe patients with systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA) complicated by MAS and the term macrophage activation syndrome first appeared in the title of a paper in 1993.MAS is one of the many types of secondary HLH and should not be confused with primary HLH. Experience has taught that MAS secondary to different autoimmune diseases is not equal. In the 30 years since initial description in patients with sJIA, the clinical spectrum, diseases associated with MAS, therapy, and understanding the pathogenesis have all made significant gains. The diagnostic/classification criteria for MAS secondary to sJIA, SLE, RA, and KD differ based on the different laboratory abnormalities associated with each (Ahn et al., J Rheumatol 44:996-1003, 2017; Han et al., Ann Rheum Dis 75:e44, 2016; Ravelli et al., Ann Rheum Dis 75:481-489, 2016; Borgia et al., Arthritis Rheumatol 70:616-624, 2018). These examples include the thrombocytosis associated with sJIA, a chronic generalized activation of the immune system, leading to elevations of fibrinogen and sIL-2R, low platelet count associated with SLE, and more acute inflammation associated with KD. Therefore, individual diagnostic criteria are required, and they all differ from the diagnostic criteria for HLH, which are based on a previously non-activated immune system (Ahn et al., J Rheumatol 44:996-1003, 2017; Han et al., Ann Rheum Dis 75:e44, 2016; Ravelli et al., Ann Rheum Dis 75:481-489, 2016; Borgia et al., Arthritis Rheumatol 70:616-624, 2018; Henter et al., Pediatr Blood Cancer 48:124-131, 2007). This helps to explain why the HLH diagnostic criteria do not perform well in MAS.The initial treatment remains high-dose steroids and IVIG followed by the use of a calcineurin inhibitor for resistant cases. IVIG can be used if there is a concern about malignancy to wait for appropriate investigations or with steroids. Interluekin-1 inhibition is now the next therapy if there is a failure to respond to steroids and calcineurin inhibitors. Advances in understanding the mechanisms leading to MAS, which has been greatly aided by the use of mouse models of MAS and advances in genome sequencing, offer a bright future for more specific therapies. More recent therapies are directed to specific cytokines involved in the pathogenesis of MAS and can lead to decreases in the morbidity and mortality associated with MAS. These include therapies directed to inhibiting the JAK/STAT pathway and/or specific cytokines, interleukin-18 and gamma interferon, which are currently being studied in MAS. These more specific therapies may obviate the need for nonspecific immunosuppressive therapies including high-dose prolonged steroids, calcineurin inhibitors, and etoposide.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Medical cannabis (MC) has entered mainstream medicine by a unique route. Regulatory acceptance as a medical product in many jurisdictions has bypassed the traditional evidence-based pathway required for therapies. Easier access to MC, especially related to recreational legalization of cannabis, has led to widespread use by patients for symptom relief of a variety of medical conditions and often without medical oversight. Musculoskeletal pain remains the most common reason for MC use. This review examines real-world issues pertaining to MC and offers some guidance for clinical care of patients with rheumatic diseases being treated with MC. RECENT FINDINGS: Controlled clinical studies of cannabis products in patients with rheumatic diseases have been small and tested a range of compounds, routes of administration, and clinical populations, limiting our ability to generate conclusions on MC's effectiveness in this population. Observational cohort studies and surveys suggest that use of MC and related products in patients with rheumatic diseases improves pain and associated symptoms but is commonly accompanied by mild to moderate side effects. Conflicting evidence contributes to practitioner and patient uncertainty regarding the use of MC for rheumatic disease-related pain. Despite promising preclinical and observational evidence that MC and cannabis-derived compounds are useful in the management of rheumatic disease-related pain, there remains limited high-quality clinical evidence to substantiate these findings. There are a significant number of clinical trials on this topic currently planned or underway, however, suggesting the next decade may yield more clarity. Nevertheless, given that many people with rheumatic diseases are using cannabis products, healthcare professionals must remain apprised of the evidence pertaining to cannabinoids, communicate such evidence to patients in a meaningful way that is free from personal bias and stigma, and maintain strong collaborative clinical care pertaining to MC.

Vaccine-associated rheumatic diseases are rare but one of the most feared adverse drug reactions (ADRs). However, this topic has been investigated less with large-scale data in the literature. With the rapid progress in the development and approval of vaccines during the pandemic, public concerns regarding their safety have been raised. To assess the global and regional burden, long-term trends, and potential risk factors of vaccines-associated six types of rheumatic diseases (ankylosing spondylitis [AS], polymyalgia rheumatica [PMR], rheumatoid arthritis [RA], Sjögren's syndrome, Systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE], Systemic scleroderma), this study conducted disproportionality analysis based on the reports from the World Health Organization International Pharmacovigilance Database documented between 1967 and 2023 (n for total reports = 131 255 418) across 156 countries and territories. We estimated the reporting odds ratio (ROR) and information component (IC) to determine the disproportionality signal for rheumatic diseases. Of 198 046 reports of all-cause rheumatic diseases, 14 703 reports of vaccine-associated rheumatic diseases were identified. While the reporting counts have gradually increased over time globally, we observed a dramatic increase in reporting counts after 2020, potentially due to a large portion of reports of COVID-19 mRNA vaccine-associated rheumatic diseases. The disproportionality signal for rheumatic diseases was most pronounced in HBV vaccines (ROR, 4.11; IC025, 1.90), followed by COVID-19 mRNA (ROR, 2.79; IC025, 1.25), anthrax (ROR, 2.52; IC025, 0.76), papillomavirus (ROR, 2.16; IC025, 0.95), encephalitis (ROR, 2.01; IC025, 0.58), typhoid (ROR, 1.91; IC025, 0.44), influenza (ROR, 1.49; IC025, 0.46), and HAV vaccines (ROR, 1.41; IC025, 0.20). From age- and sex-specific perspective, young females and old males are likely to have vaccine-associated rheumatic disease reports. Furthermore, overall vaccines showed a disproportionality signal for PMR (IC025, 3.13) and Sjögren's syndrome (IC025, 0.70), systemic scleroderma (IC025, 0.64), specifically while the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines are associated with all six types of diseases. Although multiple vaccines are associated with rheumatic disease reports, healthcare providers should be aware of the potential of autoimmune manifestations following vaccination, particularly the COVID-19 mRNA and HBV vaccines, and take into account for risk factors associated with these ADRs. Most ADRs exhibited an average time to onset of 11 days, underscoring the significance of monitoring and timely management by clinicians.

The Duke Criteria have shaped the way infectious endocarditis (IE) is diagnosed in the last 30 years. This study aims to evaluate their current validity and importance in the diagnostic of IE. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 163 consecutive patients who presented at the University Hospital in Ulm (Germany) with clinical suspicion of IE between 2009 and 2019. With patients' medical records we differentiated between definitive endocarditis (DIE), possible endocarditis (PIE) and rejected endocarditis (RIE) and assessed the validity of the Duke Criteria in comparison to the final discharge diagnosis. We then tried to identify new potential parameters as an addition to the current valid Duke Criteria. The validity of the Duke Criteria improves with the length of hospitalization (especially cardiac imaging criterion, RIE 33.3%, PIE 31.6% and DIE 41.9%, p = 0.622 at admission and RIE 53.3%, PIE 68.4%, DIE 92.2%, p < 0.001 at discharge). At admission, overall sensitivity and specificity were respectively 29.5 and 91.2% in the DIE group. At discharge, sensitivity in the DIE group rose to 77.5% and specificity decreased to 79.4%. Of all screened metrics, microhematuria (p = 0.124), leukocyturia, (p = 0.075), younger age (p = 0.042) and the lack of rheumatoid disease (p = 0.011) showed a difference in incidence (p < 0.2) when comparing DIE and RIE group. In multivariate regression only microhematuria qualified as a potential sixth minor criterion at admission. Even with the latest technological breakthroughs our findings suggest that the Duke Criteria continue to hold value in the accurate assessment of IE. Future efforts must shorten the time until diagnosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Patients with autoimmune inflammatory rheumatic disease (AIIRD) are at higher risk of severe infections because of their underlying diseases and immunosuppression. Our objective was to elucidate the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of patients with AIIRD presenting with COVID-19 and their relation to disease severity. We explored whether variables, including underlying diagnosis, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and COVID-19 vaccine status, were associated with more severe forms of COVID-19 infection. METHODS: Between 1 January 2020 and 30 June 2022, 151 patients with AIIRD and COVID-19 infection were analysed using a binary regression model and a multinomial regression model. RESULTS: The average age was 61.5 years, and average Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) was 2.1; 106 (70.2%) patients were diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and 70 (46.4%) patients were receiving prednisolone. In the multivariable logistic regression model, ages between 50 and 69 years (odds ratio (OR) = 5.85; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.35-25.25) and older than 70 years (OR = 5.29; 95% CI = 1.21-23.14), prior prednisolone treatment (OR = 7.09; 95% CI = 2.63-19.11) and vaccination status including one and two doses (OR = 0.19; 95% CI = 0.05-0.69) and three and four doses (OR = 0.09; 95% CI = 0.02-0.35) were all statistically significant factors related to changes in the severity level of COVID-19. CONCLUSION: Severity of COVID-19 infection in patients with AIIRD is affected by age, background steroid use and vaccination status. Factors including sex, comorbidity, diagnosis of AIIRDs and use of DMARDs, including conventional synthetic, biologics and targeted DMARDs, were not significantly associated with COVID-19 severity.

Patients with rheumatic diseases frequently operate with incomplete or incorrect information while planning for and experiencing pregnancy, often due to variability in provider care and knowledge. Risk assessment at each stage of pregnancy-pre-conception, during pregnancy, and postpartum-is focused on reducing maternal and neonatal complications. This review aims to compile updated, evidence-based guidance on how to minimize risk factors contributing to adverse pregnancy outcomes (APOs). Mitigation of known causes of infertility, appropriate testing and monitoring, achieving low disease activity on pregnancy-safe disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) prior to conception, controlling hypertension (a frequent comorbidity among patients with certain rheumatic diseases), and the use of appropriate adjunctive medications (such as low-dose aspirin when preeclampsia risk is high) can optimize fertility and prevent adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I association is a well-established feature of common and uncommon inflammatory diseases, but it is unknown whether it impacts the pathogenesis of these disorders. The "arthritogenic peptide" hypothesis proposed initially for HLA-B27-associated ankylosing spondylitis (AS) seems the most intuitive to serve as a model for other HLA class I-associated diseases, but evidence supporting it has been scarce. Recent technological advances and the discovery of epistatic relationships between disease-associated HLA class I and endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidase (ERAP) coding variants have led to the generation of new data and conceptual approaches to the problem requiring its re-examination. Continued success in these endeavors holds promise to resolve a Gordian Knot in human immunobiology. It may ultimately benefit patients by enabling the development of new therapies and precision tools for assessing disease risk and predicting treatment responses.

OBJECTIVE: To design a care protocol in Chronic Inflammatory Arthritis during the pre-conceptional period, pregnancy, postpartum and lactation. This protocol aims to be practical and applicable in consultations where patients with chronic inflammatory rheumatological diseases are treated, thus helping to better control these patients. Likewise, recommendations are offered on when patients could be consulted/referred to a specialized center by the physician. METHODS: A multidisciplinary panel of expert physicians from different specialties identified the key points, analyzed the scientific evidence, and met to develop the care protocol. RESULTS: The recommendations prepared have been divided into three blocks: rheumatology, gynecology and pediatrics. The first block has been divided into pre-pregnancy, pregnancy and postpartum visits. CONCLUSIONS: This protocol tries to homogenize the follow-up of the patients from the moment of the gestational desire until the year of life of the infants. It is important to perform tests in patients of childbearing age and use drugs compatible with pregnancy. If appropriate, the patient should be referred to specialized units. Multidisciplinarity (rheumatology, gynecology and pediatrics) is essential to improve the control and monitoring of these patients and their offspring.

OBJECTIVE: To explore Cytomegalovirus (CMV) antigen-specific multi-cytokine immune responses in patients with rheumatic disease (RD) under different CMV infection status. METHODS: A total of 60 RD patients in our center from March 2023 to August 2023 were enrolled. The patients were divided into latent CMV infection and active CMV infection, the latter was classified as subclinical CMV infection or CMV disease based on presence or absence of symptoms related to CMV. Whole blood was collected and stimulated with QuantiFERON-CMV antigen. The levels of IFN-γ, TNF-α, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, IL-17 and CXCL-2 in supernatant were measured by Luminex Assays. The receiver operating characteristic curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of cytokine for distinguishing different CMV infection status. RESULTS: The proportion of patients with severe lymphopenia was lowest in the latent CMV infection group, while there were no significant differences in medication usage in different CMV infection status. After stimulation with QF-CMV antigens, the levels of IFN-γ, TNF-α and IL-2 in the CMV disease group were significantly lower than those in the latent CMV infection group. CMV antigen-specific IFN-γ, TNF-α levels and severe lymphopenia together provided the best discriminatory performance for distinguishing between latent and either active CMV infection patients (AUC = 0.854) or CMV disease patients (AUC = 0.935). CONCLUSION: Noninvasive peripheral blood biomarkers (the combination of CMV antigen-specific IFN-γ, TNF-α levels and severe lymphopenia) may have the potential to diferentiate different status of CMV infection in RD population.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases. Much of this may be attributed to systemic inflammation resulting in coronary atherosclerosis and myocarditis. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is the gold standard for the evaluation of cardiac structure and function, including tissue characterization, which allows for detection of myocardial edema, inflammation, and fibrosis. Advances in parametric mapping and coronary flow reserve measurement techniques have the potential to change the diagnosis, risk stratification, and management of patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases. We provide an overview of the current evidence and suggest potential future roles for the use of comprehensive cardiac magnetic resonance in patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases in the field of cardio-rheumatology.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the vaccination coverage of patients with chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease (CIRD) against influenza, pneumococcus, and COVID-19 and to determine, per the patients' point of view, the possible factors related to vaccination hesitation and/or refusal. METHODS: A cross-sectional study carried out by the vaccination working group of the Moroccan Society of Rheumatology, including patients with CIRD in Morocco. Information about vaccination coverage and reasons for non-vaccination against influenza, pneumococcal infection, and COVID-19 was collected. RESULTS: This survey included 230 patients (mean age of 46.9 +/-13.89 years; 68.7% females) affected by CIRD (rheumatoid arthritis 53%, spondyloarthritis 39.6%, psoriatic arthritis 7%). The study shows a significant lack of influenza and pneumococcal vaccination in CIRD patients, with vaccination coverage against influenza, pneumococcal infection, and COVID-19 at 2.2%, 0.4%, and 80.9%, respectively. The main reason for non-vaccination against influenza and pneumococcus was related to the absence of recommendations by their doctors (77%, 87%, p = 0.04). Additionally, the primary reason for non-vaccination against COVID-19 was the fear of the vaccine's side effects (51%, p = 0.0001), mainly a flare-up of CIRD (44%, p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: This survey shows a lack of influenza, pneumococcal, and COVID-19 vaccination in CIRD patients. The principal actions to improve vaccination should aim to educate patients and encourage rheumatologists to vaccinate their patients.

Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) experienced in rheumatology practice is diverse and includes opportunistic infections such as herpes zoster (HZ). This study aimed to explore the risk of HZ in patients with rheumatic diseases in the perspective of IRIS. The study retrospectively reviewed the clinical courses of 20 patients with HZ and investigated the IRIS triggers such as the reduction or discontinuation of immunosuppressive drugs within 3 months and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination within 4 weeks prior to HZ development. Disease activity of the underlying rheumatic disease at HZ onset was evaluated using the physician's global assessment. Thirteen patients developed HZ after reducing or discontinuing immunosuppressive drugs, with mild and stable disease activity. In four of these cases, disease activity increased after dose reduction or discontinuation, and HZ subsequently developed. Two of the seven patients who did not reduce or discontinue immunosuppressive drugs received the COVID-19 vaccination. Fifteen patients (75%) had at least one of the two IRIS triggers. Four of the five patients who developed HZ without any IRIS triggers were at HZ risk. To conclude, IRIS, caused by the reduction or discontinuation of immunosuppressive drugs, may be involved in the development of HZ in rheumatology practice.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of anti-TNF (biological) therapies on the incidence and progression of diabetic retinopathy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 50 diabetic patients with rheumatic diseases (group 1) was performed. An age-, sex-, and HbA1c-matched control group (group 2) was formed from a pool of diabetic patients who underwent regular eye examinations. The presence or absence of diabetic retinopathy was also assessed. Comorbidities such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, and hyperlipidemia were also evaluated as possible confounding factors. RESULTS: Hundred eyes of 50 patients were evaluated in each group. Only three patients in group 1 had non-proliferative retinopathy. The median duration of rheumatic disease was 9 years, whereas that of diabetes was 11 years. The mean duration of anti-TNF therapy was 4 years. In the control group of diabetes-only patients, 13 patients developed some form of newly diagnosed diabetic retinopathy during the last five years. The calculated retinopathy occurrence between the groups was statistically significant (p < 0.05). In this study, the incidence rate ratio for patients receiving anti-TNF treatment was calculated as 0.4 in the study. CONCLUSION: TNF inhibitors, with their anti-inflammatory effects, positively impact diabetic complications by reducing the incidence of retinopathy. To our knowledge, this is the first study to evaluate retinopathy development after anti-TNF therapy.

RESUMO

Pediatric rheumatic diseases (PRDs) are a heterogeneous group of diseases that can have a chronic unpredictable disease course that can negatively affect mood, functioning, and quality of life. Given the range of difficulties faced in managing PRDs, as well as the psychosocial issues youth with these diseases experience, pediatric psychologists can be well suited to address concerns that arise in care for youth with PRDs including adherence, cognitive assessment, pain management, functional disability, and mood. Potential ways that pediatric psychologists can address these concerns and be embedded within an interdisciplinary treatment plan for youth with PRDs are described.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination rates and factors affecting vaccination in children with rheumatic diseases. Patients and methods: This multicenter cross-sectional survey-based study was conducted between July 2022 and September 2022. Four hundred seventy-four patients (256 females, 218 males; median age: 15 years; interquartile range, 13 to 16 years) were included in the patient group, and 211 healthy children (124 females, 87 males; median age: 15 years; interquartile range, 13 to 16 years) were included in the control group. A questionnaire was administered to the parents face-to-face during routine outpatient visits. Results: Of the patients, 220 were followed up with the diagnosis of autoinflammatory disease, 174 with juvenile idiopathic arthritis, 48 with connective tissue disease, 23 with vasculitis, eight with uveitis, and one with sarcoidosis. In the study group, 256 (54%) patients and 115 (54.5%) healthy children received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine. Parents' concern regarding potential side effects of the vaccine was the most common reason for COVID-19 vaccination hesitancy in both groups. The median patient age, follow-up period, colchicine treatment rates, childhood vaccination and influenza vaccination rates, median parental age, parental vaccination rate, and parental education level were higher in vaccinated patients (p<0.001). Conclusion: Parents' concerns about safety and side effects were found to be the most important factors affecting vaccination success. Identification of the underlying causes of parental vaccine hesitancy will facilitate the development of effective vaccination strategies for potential future outbreaks.

Anti-synthetase syndrome (ASyS) is a rare systemic autoimmune myopathy characterized by the involvement of muscles, lungs, and joints, in addition to Raynaud's phenomenon, "mechanics' hand," and fever. Laboratory ASyS is defined by the positivity of anti-aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase autoantibodies, of which anti-Jo-1 is the most common. Herein, we reported an ASyS defined by an anti-Ha autoantibody, which has rarely been described in the literature. Moreover, to the best of our knowledge, we reported the first case of anti-Ha ASyS in Brazil.

Bone proliferation is an important pathological feature of inflammatory rheumatic diseases. Although recent advance in high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) enables physicians to study microarchitectures, physicians' annotation of proliferation suffers from slice inconsistency and subjective variations. Also, there are only few effective automatic or semi-automatic tools for proliferation detection. In this study, by integrating pathological knowledge of proliferation formation with the advancement of statistical shape analysis theory, we present an unsupervised method, named Deformation-Controllable Elastic Shape model, for 3D bone Proliferation Analysis (DCES-PA). Unlike previous shape analysis methods that directly regularize the smoothness of the displacement field, DCES-PA regularizes the first and second-order derivative of the displacement field and decomposes these vector fields according to different deformations. For the first-order elastic metric, DCES-PA orthogonally decomposes the first-order derivative of the displacement field by shearing, scaling and bending deformation, and then penalize deformations triggering proliferation formation. For the second-order elastic metric, DCES-PA encodes both intrinsic and extrinsic surface curvatures into the second-order derivative of the displacement field to control the generation of high-curvature regions. By integrating the elastic shape metric with the varifold distances, DCES-PA achieves correspondence-free shape analysis. Extensive experiments on both simulated and real clinical datasets demonstrate that DCES-PA not only shows an improved accuracy than other state-of-the-art shape-based methods applied to proliferation analysis but also produces highly sensitive proliferation annotations to assist physicians in proliferation analysis.
