Background Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that gradually deteriorates the supportive tissues of teeth, eventually leading to tooth loss. Mechanical debridement stands as the gold standard method for treating periodontitis. However, antimicrobial therapy is recommended for optimal results when used alongside mechanical debridement. Numerous studies have investigated local drug delivery as an adjunct to mechanical debridement of affected tooth surfaces. Ocimum sanctum exhibits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Similarly, curcumin, as documented in the literature, demonstrates a broad spectrum of anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects. Electrospinning has demonstrated itself to be a highly effective method for fabricating drug-loaded fibers. Electrospun nanofibers containing Ocimum sanctum and curcumin are expected to exhibit greater efficacy due to their increased surface area, facilitating the dispersion of larger quantities of drugs, and their ability to control drug release when employed as a local drug delivery system. This study aims to fabricate and characterize the properties of nanofiber membranes loaded with Ocimum sanctum and curcumin using the electrospinning technique. Methods About 50 mg each of Ocimum sanctum and curcumin were blended with 15% polyvinyl alcohol and 2% chitosan polymer in a 4:1 ratio and left to stir overnight. A 10 mL syringe was filled with this solution, and an 18 G blunt-end needle charged at 15.9 kV was used for extrusion. Continuous fibers were collected onto a collector plate positioned 12 cm from the center of the needle tip, at a flow rate of 0.005 mL/min. The morphology of the fabricated membrane was assessed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the strength of the material was assessed through tensile strength analysis using INSTRON, an Electropuls E3000 Universal Testing Machine (INSTRON, Norwood, MA), and the drug release pattern was analyzed using Jasco V-730 UV-visible spectrophotometer (Jasco, Easton, MD). Results The morphology of this nanofiber showed a random distribution of fibers with no bead formation. The average diameter of the membrane was 383±102 nm, and the tensile strength of this material was 1.87 MPa. The drug release pattern showed an initial burst release of Ocimum sanctum, followed by a controlled release in subsequent hours. However, curcumin showed very little drug release because of its solubility. Conclusion In summary, the Ocimum sanctum and curcumin-loaded nanofibers exhibited robust tensile strength, a controlled drug release profile, and uniform drug distribution within the nanofiber membrane. Consequently, it can be concluded that curcumin nanofibers and electrospun Ocimum sanctum serve as valuable agents for local drug delivery in the treatment of periodontitis.

Traditional vinegars are naturally produced from sugar- or starch-containing raw materials, through alcoholic fermentation followed by acetic fermentation. Fermentation is a spontaneous and complex process involving interactions between various microorganisms. In this study, we produced vinegar using traditional methods from six fruits: rosehip, pear, fig, wild pear, apple, and plum. Bacteria that produce bacterial cellulose (BC) were isolated from these vinegars and identified. In addition, we investigated the properties of BC produced from these bacteria. The strains isolated from vinegars were identified as Gluconobacter oxydans strain MG2022, Acetobacter tropicalis strain MG2022, Acetobacter fabarum strain MG2022, Komagataeibacter saccharivorans strain MG2022, K. saccharivorans strain EG2022, and Acetobacter lovaniensis strain OD2022. In total, 0.83-2.04 g/L BC was produced and the bacterial strain isolated from pear vinegar yielded the most BC. BC produced by the bacterial strain isolated from wild pear vinegar had the highest thermal stability and crystallinity (87.44 %). Overall, this study shows that different fruits contain different BC-producing bacteria in their natural flora and vinegars obtained from fruits can be used in BC production. Also, different BC-producing bacteria can be isolated from different vinegars, and BC produced by these bacteria might have different properties.

Bioactive secondary metabolites from fungi, including Trichoderma, are an excellent source of plant biostimulants. Although production of novel biostimulants from known microbes is critical, challenging them may produce novel bioactive compounds. With this hypothesis, the study used live Fusarium chlamydosporum (FOL7) culture as the inducer during T. harzianum (IF63) growth in broth. Plate assays and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis were used to characterise the metabolites. Microscopy, pot experiments and, biochemical estimations of the defence-related enzymes in tomato plants established the biostimulant activity of the induced Trichoderma metabolites. Fungal crude metabolites (FCM) obtained from IF63+FOL7 extracts (TF.ex) showed increased antimicrobial activity. TF.ex at 50 µg mL-1, inhibited the FOL7 growth by 68.33% compared to the Trichoderma alone extract. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed morphological disruption of FOL7 mycelia by TF.ex. GC-MS analysis of the extracts revealed the presence of approximately 64 compounds, of which at least 13 were detected explicitly in TF.ex. Methyl (3-oxo-2-pentylcyclopentyl) acetate (Methyl dihydrojasmonate), a lipid functionally related to jasmonic acid, was the major metabolite (∼21%) present in TF.ex. Tomato seed dressing with TF.ex promoted plant growth and induced systemic resistance against FOL7 compared to alone Trichoderma and Fusarium extracts. The TF.ex treatment increased the superoxide dismutase (33%) and catalase activity by 2.5-fold in tomato plants. The study concludes that fungal secondary metabolites may be modulated by providing appropriate challenges to produce effective metabolite-based biostimulants for agricultural applications.

Electron microscopy is essential for examining materials and biological samples at microscopic levels, providing detailed insights. Achieving high-quality imaging is often challenged by the potential damage high-energy beams can cause to sensitive samples. This study compares scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to evaluate image quality, noise levels, and the ability to preserve delicate specimens. We used a modified SEM system with a transmitted electrons conversion accessory, allowing it to operate like a TEM but at lower voltages, thereby reducing sample damage. Our analysis included quantitative assessments of noise levels and texture characteristics such as entropy, contrast, dissimilarity, homogeneity, energy, and correlation. This comprehensive evaluation directly compared traditional TEM and the adapted SEM system across various images. The results showed that TEM provided images with higher clarity and significantly lower noise levels, reinforcing its status as the preferred method for detailed studies. However, the modified SEM system also produced high-quality images at very low acceleration voltages, which is crucial for imaging samples sensitive to high-energy exposure. The texture metrics analysis highlighted the strengths and limitations of each method, with TEM images exhibiting lower entropy and higher homogeneity, indicating smoother and more uniform textures. This study emphasizes the importance of selecting the appropriate electron microscopy method based on research needs, such as sample sensitivity and required detail level. With its conversion accessory, the modified SEM system is a versatile and valuable tool, offering a practical alternative to TEM for various applications. This research enhances our understanding of the capabilities and limitations of SEM and TEM. It paves the way for further innovations in electron microscopy techniques, improving their applicability for studying sensitive materials. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Our study introduces a modified SEM adapter enabling TEM-like imaging at reduced voltages, effectively minimizing sample damage without compromising image resolution. Through comparative analysis, we found that images from the modified SEM closely match the quality of traditional TEM, showcasing significantly lower noise levels. This advancement underscores the SEM's enhanced capability for detailed structural analysis of sensitive materials, broadening its utility across materials science and biology.

The COVID-19 pandemic provoked a large impact on tourism because of the enforcement of harsh travel restrictions and the increased global health risks caused by international mobility. This paper utilizes a longitudinal analysis to tests the impact of COVID-19 on tourists' health risk perceptions, and their relationships with destination image perception and visiting intentions. Tourists are surveyed at two different points of time, before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Multi-group structural equation modeling is utilized for the comparison of the relationships at the two points of time. The results show that the negative influence of health risk perceptions on destination image perception and visiting intentions are significantly larger after the COVID-19 pandemic while there are no significant differences in the impact of destination image perception on visiting intentions. Thus, not only are tourists more sensitive to health risk perceptions after COVID-19, but this higher sensitivity has larger impacts both on their perceptions of destination image and on the behavioural implication. The results have useful implications in terms of the need to dedicate more efforts for the management of health conditions of destinations after COVID-19.

A modified carbon paste sensor based on N,N'-(((ethane-1,2-diylbis(oxy))bis(2,1-phenylene))bis(methanylylidene))bis(pyridine-2-amine; BPA Schiff base as Cr(III) selective carrier was fabricated and studied in this work. The proposed sensor homogenization and mechanism of action was studied by infra-red (IR) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) tools. The sensor covered 1.0 × 10-7-1.0 × 10-1 mol L-1 linear range and a detection limit of 7.22 × 10-8 mol L-1 for Cr(III) with 20.17 ± 0.13 mV decade-1 Nernstian slope. 5 s was the response time of the prepared sensor and it was reproducible and stable for 3 months. The working pH range was 3.3-6.0 and it also works well to determine Cr(III) ion in presence of water miscible solvents up to 12.5% content of the methanol and 17.5% of ethanol. The electrode's selectivity was studied using separate and mixed solution methods for selectivity coefficients determination and the sensor showed good selectivity relative to a variety of metal ions (selectivity coefficients = 1.01 × 10-5-8.57 × 10-3). In addition, the practical analysis value of the sensor was demonstrated by measurement of Cr(III) quantitatively in mineral water, supplement and also as an indicator electrode in Cr(III) against EDTA potentiometric titration with good reproducibility (RSDs of 0.91-2.15%).

Fish scale microchemistry can be used to make life-history inferences, although ecological studies examining scale composition are relatively rare. Salmon scales have an external layer of calcium phosphate hydroxyl apatite (HAP). The structure, hardness, and calcium content of this layer have been shown to vary within and between species. This variation may lead to misinterpretation of trace element profiles. This study uses backscatter scanning electron microscopy with electron dispersive spectrometry to compare scales from salmon populations and to present a more detailed analysis of scale HAP than was previously available. Our findings extend the range of salmon populations for which HAP Ca is available and confirm previous findings that the HAP Ca is relatively invariable within this species.

This study extended the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) and applied it to analyse influencing factors of food waste separation intention (FSI) among households in central Vietnam. Partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was employed to analyse the data. The heterogeneity of factors contributing to FSI in cities of three levels was examined using multi-group analysis (MGA). The results indicate that attitudes, subjective norms (SN), perceived behavioural control (PBC), awareness of benefit (AB), information publicity (IP), facility availability (FA), and trust significantly affected FSI of households. MGA results indicated the heterogeneity of impacts of PBC and attitude on FSI of households among three municipal levels. The results will serve as basic data for waste officers, solid-waste management project leaders, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and other related stakeholders to lay the foundation of food waste management planning in terms of regional scale and local scale. This study will also aid the creation of a circular economy by providing a scientific base for enhancing food waste separation at source in central Vietnam.

The purpose of this study is to determine if there is a positive relationship between full-range leadership and employees' effort, efficiency, and satisfaction. A questionnaire was administered to 577 executives from Colombian companies, and the data was analyzed using a partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) approach. The results show that both transformational and transactional leadership have a direct and significant impact on extra effort, effectiveness, and satisfaction, with transformational leadership having the greatest impact on these factors. Conversely, passive-avoidant leadership has negative effects on these three constructs. This study validates the effectiveness of the MLQ 5X in a South American country, a geographical region where such studies are in their early stages. Finally, the whole range of leadership styles-transformational, transactional, and passive-avoidant-is looked at. These styles are seen as second-order constructs that challenge latent multidimensional models as they emerge.

BACKGROUND: Unpredictable situations such as clotting of blood, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism arise in the body, which is the leading cause of mortality. Such conditions generally arise after surgery as well as after treatment with oral anticoagulant agents. Apixaban is a novel oral anticoagulant widely recommended for the prevention and treatment of strokes and blood clots suffering from nonvalvular atrial fibrillation by suppressing factor Xa. Apixaban has a log P of 2.71 with poor solubility and reported maximum bioavailability of approximately 50%. OBJECTIVE: Hence, the current research mainly focused on the improvement of solubility, bioavailability, and therapeutic efficacy of Apixaban via solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN). METHODS: The SLN was developed using the hot-homogenization method using a high-pressure homogenizer. The drug-lipid compatibility study was assessed by the FTIR, and the thermal analysis was performed using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). During the scrutiny of lipids, the highest solubility of Apixaban was estimated in the glyceryl monostearate, hence selected for the formulation. Moreover, the colloidal solution was stabilized by the polyethylene glycol 200. The Design of Expert software (Version 13, Stat-Ease) was implemented for the optimization analysis by considering the 3-independent factors and 2-dependent parameters. The Patents on the SLN are Indian 202321053691, U.S. Patent, 10,973,798B2, U.S. Patent, U.S. Patent 2021/0069121A1, U.S. Patent 2022/0151945A1. RESULTS: Box-Behnken design was applied along with ANOVA, which showed a p-value less than 0.05 for the dependent parameters such as particle size and entrapment efficiency (p-value: 0.0476 and 0.0379). The optimized batch F10 showed a particle size of 167.1 nm, -19.5 mV zeta potential, and an entrapment efficiency of 87.32%. The optimized batch F10 was lyophilized and analyzed by Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), which showed a particle size of 130 nm. The solid powder was filled into the capsule for oral delivery. CONCLUSION: The marked improvement in solubility and bioavailability was achieved with F10- loaded Apixaban via Solid lipid nanoparticles. Moreover, the sustained released profile also minimizes the unseen complications that occur due to the clotting of blood.

Humic acid (HA) can substantially enhance plant growth and improve soil health. Currently, the impacts of HA concentrations variation on the development and soil quality of Panax notoginseng (Sanqi) from the forest understorey are still unclear. In this study, exogenous HA was administered to the roots of Sanqi at varying concentrations (2, 4, and 6 ml/L). Subsequently, the diversity and community structure of bacteria and fungi were assessed through high-throughput sequencing technology. The investigation further involved analyzing the interplay among the growth of sanqi, soil edaphic factors, and the microbial network stability. Our finding revealed that moderate concentrations (4 ml/L) of HA improved the fresh/dry weight of Sanqi and NO3--N levels. Compared with control, the moderate concentrations of HA had a notable impact on the bacterial and fungal communities compositions. However, there was no significant difference in the α and ß diversity of bacteria and fungi. Moreover, the abundance of beneficial bacteria (Bradyrhizobium) and harmful bacteria (Xanthobacteraceae) increased and decreased at 4 ml/L HA, respectively, while the bacterial and fungal network stability were enhanced. Structural equation model (SEM) revealed that the fresh weight of Sanqi and bacterial and fungal communities were the factors that directly affected the microbial network stability at moderate concentrations of HA. In conclusion, 4 ml/L of HA is beneficial for promoting Sanqi growth and soil quality. Our study provides a reference for increasing the yield of Sanqi and sustainable development of the Sanqi-pine agroforestry system.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), which include Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, manifest as a result of intricate interactions involving genetic predisposition, environmental factors, intestinal microbiota dynamics, and immune dysregulation, ultimately leading to persistent mucosal inflammation. Addressing this complex pathology requires a nuanced understanding to inform targeted therapeutic strategies. Consequently, our study explored the viability of Aged Garlic Extract (AGE) as an alternative therapeutic regimen for IBD management. Utilizing gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), we characterized AGE, revealing distinctions from Fresh Garlic Extract (FGE), particularly the absence of allicin in AGE and accompanying structural alterations. In In-Vivo experiments employing an IBD rat model, AGE intervention exhibited remarkable antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Noteworthy outcomes included improved survival rates, mitigation of intestinal damage, restoration of gut microbial diversity, reinforcement of tight junctions, and reversal of mitochondrial dysfunction. Collectively, these effects contributed to the preservation of enterocyte integrity and the attenuation of inflammation. In conclusion, the unique chemical composition of AGE, coupled with its substantial influence on gut microbiota, antioxidant defenses, and inflammatory pathways, positions it as a promising adjunctive therapy for the management of IBD. These observations, synergistically considered with existing research, provide significant insights into the potential utility of AGE in addressing the intricate pathophysiology inherent to IBD. The potential strength of study and rationale of using AGE against IBD includes exploring alternative therapeutic regimens if conventional treatments are associated with side effects, identification of potential hotspots/pathways involved in disease progression and study can provide economically cheaper and naturally occurring alternative to patient community who are struggling to afford expensive medications. These promising findings underscore the necessity for additional investigations to ascertain the feasibility of clinical translation, thereby substantiating the potential therapeutic role of AGE in the management of IBD.

Achieving high-quality cross sections is essential for accurate analysis of multilayer coatings. One method of performing such cross sections is focused ion beam, where sample protection from ion damage in the form of protective layers applied by FEBID and FIBID methods is used. Due to the lack of comparative summaries of different layers applied by these methods, especially in the context of cross-sectional analysis and elemental analysis of the cross-section, it was decided to address the effect of the protective layer on the reliability of EDS analysis. This study compares the effectiveness of platinum and carbon protective layers in creating cross sections for W/Hf/W samples. The effect of protective layers on elemental mapping and elemental analysis accuracy was evaluated. This study highlights the importance of protective layer selection in providing reliable EDS analysis of cross sections.

The present study unveils the intricate details on the morphology of thrips through optical, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I gene-based molecular identification tools. The variation in the morphological characters namely, antennae (seven-segmented with forked sensorium on third, fourth segments), ctenidia (paired ctenidia were present in 5th-8th abdominal segments laterally), pronotum (two pairs of posteroangular setae) were observed in both Thrips tabaci and Thrips parvispinus, respectively. Similarly, ocelli color (brown and red colored), ocellar setae (two and three pairs of ocellar setae on the head of T. tabaci and T. parvispinus, respectively. Irregular reticulate striations on metascutum and medial striations are present in the metanotum of T. parvispinus; forewings with 6 distal setae in the first vein and 15 distal setae in the second vein in T. tabaci and forewings of T. parvispinus with complete rows of setae in the first and second vein in T. parvispinus; abdomen with median dorsal setae present in the tergite of T. tabaci and presence of 6-12 discal setae in sternites III-VI segments, absence of discal setae on sternites II and VII in T. parvispinus were observed, respectively. Further, FE-SEM studies revealed that similar type of sensilla namely, sensilla basiconica (SBI, SBII, SBIII), sensilla chaetica (SChI, SChII), sensilla trichodea (ST), sensilla campaniformia (SCa), and sensilla cavity (SCav) were recorded in both the species and variations were observed in length of above sensilla of T. tabaci and T. parvispinus. Additionally, Bohm bristles (Bb) and microtrichia (Mt) on the antennal surface contributed to a comprehensive understanding of their ultrastructural features. The molecular characterization revealed a single ~450 bp nucleotide fragment with over 98% similarity for the confirmation of T. tabaci and T. parvispinus in concurrence with NCBI data. BACKGROUND: Our research is the first to explore the ultrastructural features of the lingual papillary system of Arab Zebu cattle, highlighting their Chadian environmental adaptations. RESULTS: There were two types of papillary systems: gustatory (fungiform and circumvallate) and mechanical (filiform, conical, and lentiform). The dorsal surface of the apex and rostral parts of the body had well-developed filiform papillae, whereas the tip's surface had mucosal folds, tubercles, and few filiform papillae. The torus lingua's dorsal surface displayed few lentiform papillae, while two conical papillae subtypes and numerous circumvallate papillae were present on its lateral surfaces. A slight median ridge on the dorsal surface of the body had not been described previously. Six filiform papillae subtypes were identified: long and rod-like on the tip; tongue-like and elongated on the lateral area of the apex and body; transient conical and leaf-like on the median line. The accessory processes were: one pair (on long, tongue-like, and transient conical), two pairs (on leaf-like and elongated), and four pairs on the large conical papillae. The two fungiform papillae subtypes were surrounded by a groove and had taste pores (3-5 on the oval and 5-9 on the round papillae). The U-shaped annular bad were observed around the ovoid circumvallate papillae, and the circular bad were observed around the round ones. The circumvallate had taste pores (8-14 on the round's dorsal and lateral surfaces and 6-10 on the ovoid's lateral surface). CONCLUSION: The papillary system's regional divergence was specialized for its harsh and semi-harsh diet.

Economic developments over recent decades have led to environmental issues. Industries have been introduced among the main causes of environmental degradation. From this perspective, this research work identifies strategies for reducing industrial pollutants. In the first part, the factors concerned and their impacts on mitigating industrial pollutants are identified. Then, the initial model is developed. The case examined here is Mashhad Industrial Zone, Mashhad, Iran, wherein the questionnaire was distributed. Given the non-normal data in this study, the initial model fit is further measured by structural equation modeling (SEM), using SmartPLS. Upon the model fit confirmation, the research hypotheses, i.e., the factors affecting the reduction of industrial pollutants, are assessed. The results indicated that, among the variables examined, seven components can significantly prevent industrial pollutants. In view of this, green industry status quo with the effect size of 0.3 has the greatest possible impact on diminishing industrial pollutants. The next uppermost strategies for this purpose are government incentives, management commitment, green product marketing, competitive strategies, government oversight, and political issues, with the effect size values of 0.21, 0.20, 0.19, 0.15, 0.12, and 0.09, respectively. Financial issues and government regulations are not directly linked with lowering pollutants emanating from industries.

The most prominent insect pest harming eucalyptus trees in China was Endoclita vietnamensis, which resulted in considerable losses to the environment and economy. This study examined the hair brush on the postpedes of male E. vietnamensis using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The finding revealed that the hair brush was made up of many large, flattened, pale yellow, specialized scales that were highly elongated. These scales were firmly affixed to the epidermis at their base, and at the attachment site, there was a swollen hair follicle. The interior of the pencil was hollow with ducts, and the surface featured rows of pores and longitudinal ridges. Numerous features, including mitochondria, lipid droplets, smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum, and microvilli, were present in the tissue cells of the tibial segment of postpedes of male moths. The tibial segment of postpedes of male moths exhibited thicker epidermis, cavities, and voids in the tissue cortex, suggesting the presence of secretory activities in the tissue cells. With the location and structure of the pheromone gland determined, a theoretical foundation for future research into the communication between the female and male E. vietnamensis as well as the development of sex-specific pheromone-based catching and killing methods will be available. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Endoclita vietnamensis Buchsbaum & Grehan, 2022 is the most prominent insect pest harming eucalyptus trees in China. With the location and structure of the pheromone gland determined, a theoretical foundation for future research into the communication between the female and male E. vietnamensis as well as the development of sex-specific pheromone-based catching and killing methods will be available.

The combination of hydrogel and fertilizer as slow release fertilizer hydrogel (SRFH) has become one of the most promising materials to overcome the shortcomings of conventional fertilizer by decreasing fertilizer loss rate, supplying nutrients sustainably, and lowering the frequency of irrigation. The hydrogel based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) (CMC/PAA) was synthesized. All materials, Vinasse, hydrogel (CMC/PAA) and (Vinasse/CMC-PAA) were characterized by FTIR, XRD, and SEM. The formed hydrogel was applied to control the salinity of Vinasse to use it as a cheap and economical fertilizer. The results showed that using the prepared hydrogel with Vinasse (V/CMC-PAA) as a slow-release organic fertilizer decreased the EC value through the first six hours from 1.77 to 0.35 mmohs/cm. Also, using V/CMC-PAA can control and keep the potassium as fertilizer for 50 days. The productivity per feddan from the sugar cane crop increased by about 15%, and the number of irrigations decreased from 5 to 4 times.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the impact of cigarette smoking (CS) and heated tobacco (HT) on the alteration of color and ultrastructural characteristics of human enamel and cementum. BACKGROUND: According to tobacco companies, a less harmful substitute for CS is HT products. Nevertheless, comprehensive research on the effects of HT on tooth structures has been lacking. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the impact of CS and HT on the alteration of color and ultrastructural characteristics of human enamel and cementum. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty intact and noncarious human maxillary premolars extracted for orthodontic treatment purposes, previously disinfected, were used in the study. The specimens were randomly separated into six groups (n = 10), as follows: Group 1: enamel without smoking exposure; Group 2: enamel exposed to CS; Group 3: enamel exposed to HT; Group 4: cementum without smoking exposure; Group 5: cementum exposed to CS; and Group 6: cementum exposed to HT. The measurement of color change was conducted using a spectrophotometer. The surface alterations and mineral composition of enamel and cementum were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. ANOVA test followed by Tukey's post hoc test was used to determine significant differences between groups. RESULTS: Results showed that CS had a more pronounced effect on enamel and cementum color changes than HT. The impact of CS and HT on color changes was more evident in cementum than in enamel. Surface morphology of enamel and cementum showed alterations in histology following exposure to both smoking types. Moreover, the mineral content experienced a significant reduction after using CS and HT. The reduction in calcium content after CS and HT exposure was similar. However, HT led to a significant decrease in the phosphorus content of enamel when compared with CS. At the same time, CS exposure in cementum resulted in a more significant reduction in Ca/P ratio than HT. CONCLUSIONS: Although HT may appear to present a lower danger to hard dental tissues than CS, it is not entirely harmless. CS results in more color changes on the enamel and cementum of teeth. Both smoking methods affected the mineral content of teeth, with CS having a significant effect on the roots, while HT significantly affected the crowns' mineral composition.

Functional and structural studies investigating macroscopic connectivity in the human cerebral cortex suggest that high-order associative regions exhibit greater connectivity compared to primary ones. However, the synaptic organization of these brain regions remains unexplored. In the present work, we conducted volume electron microscopy to investigate the synaptic organization of the human brain obtained at autopsy. Specifically, we examined layer III of Brodmann areas 17, 3b, and 4, as representative areas of primary visual, somatosensorial, and motor cortex. Additionally, we conducted comparative analyses with our previous datasets of layer III from temporopolar and anterior cingulate associative cortical regions (Brodmann areas 24, 38, and 21). 9,690 synaptic junctions were 3D reconstructed, showing that certain synaptic characteristics are specific to particular regions. The number of synapses per volume, the proportion of the postsynaptic targets, and the synaptic size may distinguish one region from another, regardless of whether they are associative or primary cortex. By contrast, other synaptic characteristics were common to all analyzed regions, such as the proportion of excitatory and inhibitory synapses, their shapes, their spatial distribution, and a higher proportion of synapses located on dendritic spines. The present results provide further insights into the synaptic organization of the human cerebral cortex.
