RESUMO

In this paper, we present a new type of isolator based on one-way surface magnetoplasmons (SMPs) at microwave frequencies, and it is the first time that an experimental prototype of isolator with wideband and ultra-high isolation is realized using SMP waveguide. The proposed model with gyromagnetic and dielectric layers is systematically analyzed to obtain the dispersion properties of all the possible modes, and a one-way SMP mode is found to have the unidirectional transmission property. In simulation and experiment with metallic waveguide loaded with yttrium-iron-garnet (YIG) ferrite, the scattering parameters and the field distributions agree well with the analysis and verify the one-way transmission property. The isolation is found to be as high as 80 dB and the typical value of insertion loss is 1 dB. Besides, the one-way transmission band can be controlled by changing the magnetic bias. From theoretical analysis and simulation, it is found that with a tiny value of 10 Oe of the magnetic bias, the relative bandwidth can be tuned to be greater than 50%. Compared with conventional isolators, this one-way SMP isolator has the advantages of ultra-high isolation, wide relative frequency band, and requires much smaller bias field, which has promising potential in non-reciprocal applications.

RESUMO

Microplastics (MPs) are of great concern to coral health, particularly enhanced biotoxicity of small microplastics (< 100 µm) (SMPs). However, their fate and harm to remote coral reef ecosystems remain poorly elucidated. This work systematically investigated the distributions and features of MPs and SMPs in sediments from 13 islands/reefs of the Xisha Islands, the South China Sea for comprehensively deciphering their accumulation, sources and risk to coral reef ecosystems. The results show that both MPs (average, 682 items/kg) and SMPs (average, 375 items/kg) exhibit heterogeneous distributions, with accumulation within atolls and dispersion across fringing islands, which controlled by human activities and hydrodynamic conditions. Cluster analysis for the first time reveals a pronounced difference in their compositions between the southern and northern Xisha Islands and resultant distinct sources, i.e., MPs in the north part were leaked mainly from local domestic sewage and fishing waste, while in the south part were probably derived from industrial effluents from adjacent countries. Our ecological risk assessment suggests that the ecosystem within the Yongle Atoll is exposed to a high-risk of MPs pollution. The novel results and proposed framework facilitate to effectively manage and control MPs and accordingly preserve a fragile biosphere in remote coral reefs.

RESUMO

Surface wrinkling provides an approach to fabricate micron and sub-micron-level biomaterial topographies that can mimic features of the dynamic, in vivo cell environment and guide cell adhesion, alignment, and differentiation. Most wrinkling research to date has used planar, two-dimensional (2D) substrates, and wrinkling work on three-dimensional (3D) structures has been limited. To enable wrinkle formation on architecturally complex, biomimetic 3D structures, here, we report a simple, low-cost experimental wrinkling approach that combines natural silk fibroin films with a recently developed advanced manufacturing technique for programming strain in complex 3D shape-memory polymer (SMP) scaffolds. By systematically investigating the influence of SMP programmed strain magnitude, silk film thickness, and aqueous media on wrinkle morphology and stability, we reveal how to generate and tune silk wrinkles on the micron and sub-micron scale. We find that increasing SMP programmed strain magnitude increases wavelength and decreases amplitudes of silk wrinkled topographies, while increasing silk film thickness increases wavelength and amplitude. Silk wrinkles persist after 24 h in cell culture medium. Wrinkled topographies demonstrate high cell viability and attachment. These findings suggest the potential for fabricating biomimetic cellular microenvironments that can advance understanding and control of cell-material interactions in engineering tissue constructs.

RESUMO

In this study, an organic loading (OL) of 300 mg/(L d) was set as the relative normal condition (OL-300), while 150 mg/(L d) was chosen as the condition reflecting excessively low organic loading (OL-150) to thoroughly assess the associated risks in the effluent of the biological wastewater treatment process. Compared with OL-300, OL-150 did not lead to a significant decrease in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration, but it did improve dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) levels by ∼63 %. Interestingly, the dissolved organic matter (DOM) exhibited higher susceptibility to transformation into chlorinated disinfection by-products (Cl-DBPs) in OL-150, resulting in an increase in the compound number of Cl-DBPs by ∼16 %. Additionally, OL-150 induced nutrient stress, which promoted engendered human bacterial pathogens (HBPs) survival by ∼32 % and led to ∼51 % increase in the antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) abundance through horizontal gene transfer (HGT). These findings highlight the importance of carefully considering the potential risks associated with low organic loading strategies in wastewater treatment processes.

RESUMO

Scientific interest in SOA influence on indoor air quality increases since last 20 years. It is well known, that particles of nano-sized diameter pose a threat for human health causing, among others: eye, upper airway irritation, inflammatory response in cells, worsening asthma, hypertension, diabetes, and central nervous dysfunction. Terpenes are reactive VOCs, commonly emitted in indoor air and considered to be SOA precursors by oxidation reactions. The aim of this study was to investigate the relative humidity influence on i) formation of limonene ozonolysis products and ii) SOA formation process - especially the first steps of it. We managed to determine 4 uncommon limonene ozonolysis products (m/z: 43, 83, 99 and 110) appearing in the PTR-TOF-MS mass spectra with the same frequency as well-known formaldehyde, acetone, acetic acid and formic acid. We also detected m/z 75 and m/z 115 formed under dry conditions and m/z 111 and m/z 125 formed under humid conditions. Detected masses formula is proposed with probability >70 % and the probability is derived from the deviation of the exact mass to the measured one and the isotope distribution. SMPS data analysis allowed us to conclude that RH around 40% increases particle mass concentration, regardless initial limonene concentration. Unfortunately, conclusions about RH influence on particle number concentration are inconsistent. Under low initial terpene concentration, RH around 40% decreases particle number concentration. However, for high initial limonene concentration, RH around 40% caused increase in particle number concentration. Obtained results allowed to conclude, that i) RH influences both particle number and particle mass concentration, ii) initial substrate concentration influences SOA formation altering the RH effect, iii) comparison of results and drawing conclusions is difficult due to different experimental protocols in the literature and due to the number of factors influencing SOA formation initiated by terpene oxidation.

RESUMO

The current work focuses on the comprehensive characterization of a 3D printable biomaterial, polyether ketone ketone (PEKK). The PEKK granules are first characterized and then utilized for extrusion of the PEKK filaments. The extruded PEKK filaments are characterized for crystallinity, quality, and printability, wherein they exhibit amorphous nature, good quality, and appropriate printability. Utilizing the filaments, the samples are printed with the appropriate printing parameters, which are further characterized for layer adhesion, voids, and crystallinity, wherein they showed seamless layer adhesion, improper beads consolidation, and the amorphous nature. The as printed samples are further annealed at different temperatures (200 and 250 °C). The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the annealed samples (A-200 and A-250) revealed better void consolidation, while the X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed better crystallinity compared to the un-annealed sample. The printed samples are also investigated for dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), shape memory, and tensile properties. The storage moduli of the annealed samples are observed to be better than the un-annealed sample. The annealed samples exhibited better shape memory properties: shape fixity and shape recovery ratio of A-200 and A-250 samples, 90.28 and 90.75%, and 99.16 and 94.73%, respectively, compared to the un-annealed samples. The highest shape fixity ratio and the shape recovery ratio are noted for A-250 (90.75%) and A-200 (∼ 100%). The A-200 and A-250 samples showed enhanced tensile modulus and strength, 4.16 and 49.67%, and 36.61 and 35.06%, respectively compared to the un-annealed sample. The highest modulus is noted for A-250, while the strength is comparable (36.61 and 35.06%) for A-200 and A-250.

RESUMO

Nature has always been a source of inspiration for the development of novel materials and devices. In particular, polymer actuators that mimic the movements and functions of natural organisms have been of great interest due to their potential applications in various fields, such as biomedical engineering, soft robotics, and energy harvesting. During recent years, the development and actuation performance of electrospun fibrous meshes with the advantages of high permeability, surface area, and easy functional modification, has received extensive attention from researchers. This review covers the recent progress in the state-of-the-art electrospun actuators based on commonly used polymers such as stimuli-sensitive hydrogels, shape-memory polymers (SMPs), and electroactive polymers. The design strategies inspired by nature such as hierarchical systems, layered structures, and responsive interfaces to enhance the performance and functionality of these actuators, including the role of biomimicry to create devices that mimic the behavior of natural organisms, are discussed. Finally, the challenges and future directions in the field, with a focus on the development of more efficient and versatile electrospun polymer actuators which can be used in a wide range of applications, are addressed. The insights gained from this review can contribute to the development of advanced and multifunctional actuators with improved performance and expanded application possibilities.

RESUMO

Reports have pointed out that nearly 50% of the global total energy demand for buildings is used for daily heating and cooling. Therefore, it is very important to develop various high-performance thermal management techniques with low energy consumption. In this work, we present an intelligent shape memory polymers (SMPs)-based device with programmable anisotropic thermal conductivity fabricated by a 4D printing technique to assist in thermal management with net zero energy. Highly thermal conductive BN nanosheets were textured in a poly (lactic acid) (PLA) matrix by 3D printing, and the printed composites lamina exhibited significant anisotropic thermal conductivity. The direction of heat flow in devices could be switched programmably, accompanying the light-activated deformation controlled by grayscale of composite, which was demonstrated by the "windows" arrays composed of in-plate thermal conductivity facets and SMPs-based hinge joints, achieving the programmable movement of opening and closing under different light conditions. Based on solar radiation-dependent SMPs coupled with the adjustment of heat flow along anisotropic thermal conductivity, the 4D printed device has been proved in concept for potential applications in thermal management in a building envelop for dynamic climate adaptation, taking place automatically based on the environment.

RESUMO

Estimates of tyre and brake wear emission factors are presented, derived from data collected from roadside and urban background sites on the premises of the University of Birmingham, located in the UK's second largest city. Size-fractionated particulate matter samples were collected at both sites concurrently in the spring/summer of 2019 and analysed for elemental concentrations and magnetic properties. Using Positive Matrix Factorisation (PMF), three sources were identified in the roadside mass increment of the 1.0-9.9 µm stages of MOUDI impactors located at both sites, namely: brake dust (7.1%); tyre dust (9.6%); and crustal (83%). The large fraction of the mass apportioned to crustal material was suspected to be mainly from a nearby construction site rather than resuspension of road dust. By using Ba and Zn as elemental tracers, brake and tyre wear emission factors were estimated as 7.4 mg/veh.km and 9.9 mg/veh.km, respectively, compared with the PMF-derived equivalent values of 4.4 mg/veh.km and 11 mg/veh.km. Based on the magnetic measurements, an emission factor can be estimated independently for brake dust of 4.7 mg/veh.km. A further analysis was carried out on the concurrently measured roadside increment in the particle number size distribution (10 nm-10 µm). Four factors were identified in the hourly measurements: traffic exhaust nucleation; traffic exhaust solid particles; windblown dust; and an unknown source. The high increment of the windblown dust factor, 3.2 µg/m3, was comparable in magnitude to the crustal factor measured using the MOUDI samples (3.5 µg/m3). The latter's polar plot indicated that this factor was dominated by a large neighbouring construction site. The number emission factors of the exhaust solid particle and exhaust nucleation factors were estimated as 2.8 and 1.9 x 1012/veh.km, respectively.

RESUMO

The present study investigated the shock of NaCl and C/N ratio on properties of soluble microbial products (SMPs), focusing on their sized fractions. The results indicated that the NaCl stress increased the content of biopolymers, humic substances, building blocks, and LMW substances in SMPs, while the addition of 40 g NaCl L-1 significantly changed their relative abundance in SMPs. The acute impact of both N-rich and N-deficient conditions accelerated the secretion of SMPs, but the characteristics of LMW substances differed. Meanwhile, the bio-utilization of SMPs has been enhanced with the increase of NaCl dosage but decreased with the increase of the C/N ratio. The mass balance of sized fractions in SMPs + EPS could be set up when NaCl dosage <10 g/L and C/N ratio >5, which indicates the hydrolysis of sized fractions in EPS mainly compensated for their increase/reduction in SMPs. Besides, the results of the toxic assessment indicated that the oxidative damage caused by the NaCl shock was an important factor affecting the property of SMPs, and the abnormal expression of DNA transcription cannot be neglected for bacteria metabolisms with the change of C/N ratio.

RESUMO

One possible device authentication method is based on device fingerprints, such as software- or hardware-based unique characteristics. In this paper, we propose a fingerprinting technique based on passive externally measured information, i.e., current consumption from the electrical network. The key insight is that small hardware discrepancies naturally exist even between same-electrical-circuit devices, making it feasible to identify slight variations in the consumed current under steady-state conditions. An experimental database of current consumption signals of two similar groups containing 20 same-model computer displays was collected. The resulting signals were classified using various state-of-the-art time-series classification (TSC) methods. We successfully identified 40 similar (same-model) electrical devices with about 94% precision, while most errors were concentrated in confusion between a small number of devices. A simplified empirical wavelet transform (EWT) paired with a linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifier was shown to be the recommended classification method.

RESUMO

Biological activated carbon (BAC) will produce soluble microbial products (SMPs), which affect effluent quality. To clarify the mechanism by which BAC affects effluent water quality, the processes of a drinking water plant in Jiangsu Province were investigated. It was found that during the O3-BAC process, although ozonation could remove dissolved organic matter (DOC) to a certain extent, the DOC increased from 4.44 to 4.47 mg/L after BAC. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in effluent from different processes was divided into five fractions based on hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity by resin fractionation. Through fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy combined with DOC analysis, it was found that SMPs are mainly included in transitional hydrophilic neutral (TPIN) fraction, which was the main cause of the DOC increase. Therefore, a new combined process was designed to remove TPIN effectively by coagulation after biological treatment, and found that coagulation had a good removal rate (13.2%) on TPIN. The trihalomethane formation potential (THMFP) of TPIN could be reduced effectively by 44.9% after coagulation. Compared with the old process, the new combined process had a higher removal rate (14.2-30.0%) of DOC, as well as a greater reduction of THMFP (29.0-78.6%) and haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP) (46.4-75.3%). This study aims to reveal the mechanism by which SMPs affect effluent water quality and exacerbate health risks, and to propose a solution to provide theoretical support for the design and optimization of drinking water treatment processes.

RESUMO

Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) have gradually emerged in the mechanism and biomedical fields and facilitate the upgrading of industrial mechanisms and the breakthrough of technical bottlenecks. However, most of the SMPs are infeasible in harsh environments, such as aerospace, due to the low glass transition temperature. There are still some works that remain in creating truly portable or non-contacting actuators that can match the performances and functions of traditional metal structures. Polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) with a high glass transition temperature of 143 °C is endowed with outstanding high-temperature resistance and radiation-resistant properties and shape memory behavior. Thus, we explore the shape-memory properties and actuation performances of high-temperature PEEK in bending behaviors. The shape-recovery ratio, actuation speed and force under different programming conditions and structure parameters are summarized to complete the actuation capacities. Meanwhile, a metallic ball transported by shape-memory PEEK and deployed drag sail with thermo-responsive composite joints were shown to verify the potential in aerospace.

RESUMO

Implantation of cardiovascular stents is an important therapeutic method to treat coronary artery diseases. Bare-metal and drug-eluting stents show promising clinical outcomes, however, their permanent presence may create complications. In recent years, numerous preclinical and clinical trials have evaluated the properties of bioresorbable stents, including polymer and magnesium-based stents. Three-dimensional (3D) printed-shape-memory polymeric materials enable the self-deployment of stents and provide a novel approach for individualized treatment. Novel bioresorbable metallic stents such as iron- and zinc-based stents have also been investigated and refined. However, the development of novel bioresorbable stents accompanied by clinical translation remains time-consuming and challenging. This review comprehensively summarizes the development of bioresorbable stents based on their preclinical/clinical trials and highlights translational research as well as novel technologies for stents (e.g., bioresorbable electronic stents integrated with biosensors). These findings are expected to inspire the design of novel stents and optimization approaches to improve the efficacy of treatments for cardiovascular diseases.

RESUMO

During the synthesis of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), various occupational exposures occur, leading to health consequences. To date, there is paucity of studies focused on modeling the deposition of nanoparticles emitted from ENMs synthesis processes. This study aimed to characterise and assess exposure to gold (AuNPs) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) during a synthesis process in a research laboratory in South Africa. AuNPs and AgNPs synthesis processes were monitored for an hour in a laboratory using a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer. The monitoring was conducted at a height of 1.2-1.5 m (m) and 1.5 m away from the hood, assuming a 30 cm (cm) breathing circumference zone. Each synthesis process was monitored thrice to generate reliable point estimates, which were used to assess exposure over 8 hours. A time-weighted average concentration was calculated and compared to the derived 8-h occupational exposure limit (OEL) for AgNPs (0.19 µg/m3) and the proposed provisional nano reference value for AuNPs (20,000 particles/cm3). The Multiple-Path Particle Dosimetry model was used to calculate the deposition and retention of both AuNPs and AgNPs. NPs emitted during the synthesis process were dominant in the nuclei (79% for AuNPs and 54% for AgNPs), followed by the Aitken (12% for AuNPs and 29% for AgNPs), with fewer particles in the accumulation mode (9.2% for AuNPs and 17% for AgNPs). AuNPs and AgNPs generated during the synthesis process were determined at 1617.3 ± 102 cm3 (0.046 µg/m3) and 2,687 cm3 ± 620 (0.077 µg/m3), respectively. For the three exposure scenarios, none exceeded the occupational exposure limit for both AuNPs (provisional) and AgNPs (OEL). Workers in the synthesis laboratory are exposed to a concentration below the recommended occupational exposure limit for silver and the proposed provisional nano reference value for gold. Although, the concentrations to which laboratory workers are exposed to are below safe levels, the assessment of the lung deposition patterns indicate a high particle lung retention which raise concerns about long term safety of workers.

RESUMO

In this work, laboratory chamber experiments of gas-phase methyl iodide photolysis in the presence of ozone at three relative humidity conditions were performed to study the formation and physico-chemical properties of iodine oxide particles. The obtained results revealed significant morphological changes of iodine oxide particles that were observed to depend on relative humidity. The formed iodine oxide particles under dry conditions were supposed to be agglomerates of fine hygroscopic crystals. On the other hand, a humid atmosphere was observed to favor the formation of isomeric, tetragonal and orthorhombic hygroscopic crystals potentially composed of HIO3 likely formed from progressive hydration of iodine oxide clusters. This process leads to a release of molecular iodine, I2, which may indicate a potential role of I2O4 in the particles' evolution processes. The obtained results on the iodine oxides' behavior are important to the nuclear power plant safety industry since many of the organic iodides that may be released during a major nuclear power-plant accident contain radioactive isotopes of iodine that are known to have lethal or toxic impacts on human health.

RESUMO

Near-infrared (NIR) light-triggered shape memory polymers are expected to have a more promising prospect in biomedical applications compared with traditional heat-triggered shape memory polymers. In this work, a new kind of polyurethane with NIR light-triggered shape memory property was prepared by using polycaprolactone (PCL), polydopamine nanoparticles (PDANPs), hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), and 1,4-butanediol (BDO). The synthesized PCL-PDA polyurethanes, especially when the weight content of PDANPs was 0.17%, showed excellent mechanical properties because the PDANPs were well-dispersed in polyurethanes by the chain extension reaction. Moreover, it also showed an NIR light-triggered rapid shape recovery because of the photothermal effect of polydopamine. The in vitro and in vivo tests showed that the PCL-PDA polyurethane would not inhibit cell proliferation nor induce a strong host inflammatory response, revealing the non-cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility of the material. In addition, the PCL-PDA polyurethane exhibited excellent in vivo NIR light-triggered shape memory performance under an 808 nm laser with low intensity (0.33 W cm-2), which was harmless to the human skin. These results demonstrated the potential of the PCL-PDA polyurethane in biomedical implant applications.

RESUMO

Pollutant emissions from residential heating systems represent a main concern in terms of outdoor air quality. Differently from other pollutants, sub-micron particle emission from heating systems has not yet been exhaustively characterized by the scientific literature, with limited data available, in particular, for gas-fueled boilers. In the present paper, an experimental campaign to measure the sub-micron particle number concentrations and distributions at the stack of different automatically-fed small-scale heating systems (conventional and condensing boilers fueled by natural gas and liquid petroleum gas, and pellet stoves) was performed. Based on the measured concentrations, corresponding emission rates and emission factors were also estimated. The results of the experimental campaign revealed that the highest concentrations were measured for pellet stoves (median value >107 part. m-3), whereas conventional (about 1 × 106 part. m-3) and condensing boilers (<106 part. m-3) presented much lower concentrations. No effect of the fuel (natural gas, liquid petroleum gas) on the total concentration measured at the stack of boilers was recognized, whereas a smaller distribution mode (at 10 nm) was measured for gas-fired boilers. Because of the particle concentration values, the highest particle emission rates and factors were the pellet stove ones (median values of 2.1 × 1015 part. h-1 and 8.4 × 1013 part. kWh-1, respectively), whereas emission rates for conventional and condensing boilers were about 5 × 1013 part. h-1 and 2 × 1013 part. h-1, respectively. The estimated emission factors were also adopted to perform a simplified evaluation of the relative contributions of the investigated automatically-fed small-scale heating systems in terms of particle number on a national scale (Italy): we obtained that the pellet stove contribution is the main one as it accounts for 87% of total emissions of particle number for heating purpose.

RESUMO

Shape-Memory Polymers (SMPs) are considered a kind of smart material able to modify size, shape, stiffness and strain in response to different external (heat, electric and magnetic field, water or light) stimuli including the physiologic ones such as pH, body temperature and ions concentration. The ability of SMPs is to memorize their original shape before triggered exposure and after deformation, in the absence of the stimulus, and to recover their original shape without any help. SMPs nanofibers (SMPNs) have been increasingly investigated for biomedical applications due to nanofiber's favorable properties such as high surface area per volume unit, high porosity, small diameter, low density, desirable fiber orientation and nanoarchitecture mimicking native Extra Cellular Matrix (ECM). This review focuses on the main properties of SMPs, their classification and shape-memory effects. Moreover, advantages in the use of SMPNs and different biomedical application fields are reported and discussed.

RESUMO

Despite tremendous gains over the past decade, methods for characterizing proteins have generally lagged behind those for nucleic acids, which are characterized by extremely high sensitivity, dynamic range, and throughput. However, the ability to directly characterize proteins at nucleic acid levels would address critical biological challenges such as more sensitive medical diagnostics, deeper protein quantification, large-scale measurement, and discovery of alternate protein isoforms and modifications and would open new paths to single-cell proteomics. In response to this need, there has been a push to radically improve protein sequencing technologies by taking inspiration from high-throughput nucleic acid sequencing, with a particular focus on developing practical methods for single-molecule protein sequencing (SMPS). SMPS technologies fall generally into three categories: sequencing by degradation (e.g., mass spectrometry or fluorosequencing), sequencing by transit (e.g., nanopores or quantum tunneling), and sequencing by affinity (as in DNA hybridization-based approaches). We describe these diverse approaches, which range from those that are already experimentally well-supported to the merely speculative, in this nascent field striving to reformulate proteomics.
