RESUMO

Growing evidence suggests that travelling waves are functionally relevant for cognitive operations in the brain. Several electroencephalography (EEG) studies report on a perceptual alpha-echo, representing the brain response to a random visual flicker, propagating as a travelling wave across the cortical surface. In this study, we ask if the propagating activity of the alpha-echo is best explained by a set of discrete sources mixing at the sensor level rather than a cortical travelling wave. To this end, we presented participants with gratings modulated by random noise and simultaneously acquired the ongoing MEG. The perceptual alpha-echo was estimated using the temporal response function linking the visual input to the brain response. At the group level, we observed a spatial decay of the amplitude of the alpha-echo with respect to the sensor where the alpha-echo was the largest. Importantly, the propagation latencies consistently increased with the distance. Interestingly, the propagation of the alpha-echoes was predominantly centro-lateral, while EEG studies reported mainly posterior-frontal propagation. Moreover, the propagation speed of the alpha-echoes derived from the MEG data was around 10 m/s, which is higher compared to the 2 m/s reported in EEG studies. Using source modelling, we found an early component in the primary visual cortex and a phase-lagged late component in the parietal cortex, which may underlie the travelling alpha-echoes at the sensor level. We then simulated the alpha-echoes using realistic EEG and MEG forward models by placing two sources in the parietal and occipital cortices in accordance with our empirical findings. The two-source model could account for both the direction and speed of the observed alpha-echoes in the EEG and MEG data. Our results demonstrate that the propagation of the perceptual echoes observed in EEG and MEG data can be explained by two sources mixing at the scalp level equally well as by a cortical travelling wave. Importantly, these findings should not be directly extrapolated to intracortical recordings, where travelling waves gradually propagate at a sub-millimetre scale.

RESUMO

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) allows for quantifying modulations of human neuronal activity on a millisecond time scale while also making it possible to estimate the location of the underlying neuronal sources. The technique relies heavily on signal processing and source modelling. To this end, there are several open-source toolboxes developed by the community. While these toolboxes are powerful as they provide a wealth of options for analyses, the many options also pose a challenge for reproducible research as well as for researchers new to the field. The FLUX pipeline aims to make the analyses steps and setting explicit for standard analysis done in cognitive neuroscience. It focuses on quantifying and source localization of oscillatory brain activity, but it can also be used for event-related fields and multivariate pattern analysis. The pipeline is derived from the Cogitate consortium addressing a set of concrete cognitive neuroscience questions. Specifically, the pipeline including documented code is defined for MNE Python (a Python toolbox) and FieldTrip (a Matlab toolbox), and a data set on visuospatial attention is used to illustrate the steps. The scripts are provided as notebooks implemented in Jupyter Notebook and MATLAB Live Editor providing explanations, justifications and graphical outputs for the essential steps. Furthermore, we also provide suggestions for text and parameter settings to be used in registrations and publications to improve replicability and facilitate pre-registrations. The FLUX can be used for education either in self-studies or guided workshops. We expect that the FLUX pipeline will strengthen the field of MEG by providing some standardization on the basic analysis steps and by aligning approaches across toolboxes. Furthermore, we also aim to support new researchers entering the field by providing education and training. The FLUX pipeline is not meant to be static; it will evolve with the development of the toolboxes and with new insights. Furthermore, with the anticipated increase in MEG systems based on the Optically Pumped Magnetometers, the pipeline will also evolve to embrace these developments.

RESUMO

Transboundary river basins across developing countries, such as the Lower Mekong River Basin (LMB), are challenging to manage given frequent divergences on development and conservation priorities. Driven by needs to sustain economic performance and reduce poverty, the LMB countries are embarking on significant land use changes in the form of more hydropower dams, to satisfy growing energy demands. This pathway could lead to irreversible changes to the ecosystem of the Mekong River, if not properly managed. Given the uncertain environmental externalities and trade-offs associated with further hydropower development and operation in the LMB, this research develops four plausible scenarios of future hydropower operation, and assesses their likely impact on streamflow and instream total suspended solids and nitrate loads of the Mekong River. The findings suggest that further hydropower operations on either tributary or mainstream could result in annual and wet season flow reduction between 11 and 25% while increase dry season flows by 1 to 15%, when compared to a business-as-usual scenario. Conversely, hydropower operation on both tributary and mainstream could result in dry season flow reduction between 10 and 15%. Both instream TSS and nitrate loads are forecasted to reduce under all three scenarios by as much as 78 and 20%, respectively, compared to the business-as-usual one. These effects are predicted to magnify under extreme climate conditions with dry season flow, TSS, and nitrate levels reduced by as much as 44, 81 and 35%, respectively, during a projected extreme dry climate condition, but less severe under improved operational alternatives. With further hydropower development in the LMB being highly unavoidable, these findings can inform effective transboundary management pathways for balancing electricity generation and protection of riverine ecology, water and food security, and people livelihoods.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Spatial filtering and source separation are valuable tools in the analysis of EEG data. However, despite the well-known spatial localisation of individual cognitive processes within the brain, the available methods for source separation, such as the widely used blind source separation technique, do not take into account the spatial distributions and locations of sources. This can result in sub-optimal source identification. NEW METHOD: We present a new method for deriving a spatial filter for EEG data that attempts to identify sources that are maximally spatially distinct from one another in terms of the spatial distributions of their projections. RESULTS: We first evaluate our method with simulated EEG and show that it is able to separate EEG signals into components with distinct spatial distributions that closely resemble the original simulated sources. We also evaluate our method with real EEG and show it is able to identify a spatial filter that can be used to significantly improve classification accuracy of the P300 event-related potential (ERP). COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHODS: We compare our method to a state of the art blind source separation methods, fast independent component analysis (ICA) and common spatial patterns (CSP). We evaluate the methods suitability for a common source separation application, analysis of ERPs. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that our method is well suited to identifying spatial filters for EEG analysis. This has potential applications in a wide range of EEG signal processing applications.

RESUMO

Temperature-related reflex epilepsy most often takes the form of hot water epilepsy, but very rarely, reflex epilepsy is related to cold temperature. We report a 70-year-old male who had seizures triggered by cold sensations in the body. Four antiepileptic drugs were taken during the drug treatment, and oxcarbazepine was the most effective at stopping the seizures. We implemented clinical seizure induction and obtained EEG data from an interictal period and two complete ictal periods. Source estimation was performed to identify and map the primary sources involved in the seizures on the cortical level. We found that ß rhythm appeared on the prefrontal lobes during the whole ictal period. The low-frequency slow δ and θ rhythms, especially the δ rhythm, appeared in the occipital lobe in the early ictal stage and propagated to the right temporal lobe in the mid-late ictal stage. The prefrontal lobe and right temporal lobe were mainly involved in the generation and propagation of the epileptic activities. This study provides a valuable reference for clinical drug therapy and provides insights into the characteristics of the brain activities involved in cold-induced reflex epilepsy. RESUMO

The management of LULC changes in transboundary river basins continues to challenge water resources managers due to the differences in development and conservation priorities of the countries sharing the basin. While various watershed models (WMs) exist to support decision making, basin-wide sustainable application of the instituted WM depends on the management priorities, resources, data availability, and knowledge gaps at national and sub-basin levels. Building on the results of our prior comparative analysis of WMs for a large transboundary river basin, we applied the 'Source' model to the Lower Mekong Basin (LMB). The constructed LMB-Source model was evaluated based on its streamflow and instream total suspended solids (TSS) and nitrate loads simulative performances. A combination of predictive performance metrics (PPMs) and sophisticated hydrologic signatures were used to calibrate model parameters and diagnose the model performance. Calibration results indicated strong similarity between the simulated and observed time series data and were further confirmed by the validation results. The successful model calibration generated parameters that represent hydrologic response characteristics (HRCs) and overland TSS and nitrate generation and removal dynamics (GRDs) previously not available for the LMB. The HRCs and GRDs can be regionalised with physical attributes of the LMB in future studies which can be used to support the management of ungauged sub-basins. This study confirms Source's capability as a decision support tool for the management of transboundary river basins, and provides basin-specific values of HRCs and GRDs that can be used for a better evaluation of the potential effects of LULC changes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Magneto- and Electro-encephalography record the electromagnetic field generated by neural currents with high temporal frequency and good spatial resolution, and are therefore well suited for source localization in the time and in the frequency domain. In particular, localization of the generators of neural oscillations is very important in the study of cognitive processes in the healthy and in the pathological brain. NEW METHOD: We introduce the use of a Bayesian multi-dipole localization method in the frequency domain. Given the Fourier Transform of the data at one or multiple frequencies and/or trials, the algorithm approximates numerically the posterior distribution with Monte Carlo techniques. RESULTS: We use synthetic data to show that the proposed method behaves well under a wide range of experimental conditions, including low signal-to-noise ratios and correlated sources. We use dipole clusters to mimic the effect of extended sources. In addition, we test the algorithm on real MEG data to confirm its feasibility. COMPARISON WITH EXISTING METHOD(S): Throughout the whole study, DICS (Dynamic Imaging of Coherent Sources) is used systematically as a benchmark. The two methods provide similar general pictures; the posterior distributions of the Bayesian approach contain much richer information at the price of a higher computational cost. CONCLUSIONS: The Bayesian method described in this paper represents a reliable approach for localization of multiple dipoles in the frequency domain.

RESUMO

Developmental research, as well as paediatric clinical activity crucially depends on non-invasive and painless brain recording techniques, such as electroencephalography (EEG), and near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). However, both of these techniques measure cortical activity from the scalp without precise knowledge of the recorded cerebral structures. An accurate and reliable mapping between external anatomical landmarks and internal cerebral structures is therefore fundamental to localise brain sources in a non-invasive way. Here, using MRI, we examined the relations between the 10-20 sensor placement system and cerebral structures in 16 infants (3-17 weeks post-term). We provided an infant template parcelled in 94 regions on which we reported the variability of sensors locations, concurrently with the anatomical variability of six main cortical sulci (superior and inferior frontal sulcus, central sulcus, sylvian fissure, superior temporal sulcus, and intraparietal sulcus) and of the distances between the sensors and important cortical landmarks across these infants. The main difference between infants and adults was observed for the channels O1-O2, T5-T6, which projected over lower structures than in adults. We did not find any asymmetry in the distances between the scalp and the brain envelope. However, because of the Yakovlean torque pushing dorsally and frontally the right sylvian fissure, P3-P4 were not at the same distance from the posterior end of this structure. This study should help to refine hypotheses on functional cognitive development by providing an accurate description of the localization of standardised channels relative to infants' brain structures. Template and atlas are publicly available on our Web site (http://www.unicog.org/pm/pmwiki.php/Site/InfantTemplate).

RESUMO

In this paper we have coupled the CMAQ and ADMS air quality models to predict hourly concentrations of NO X , NO2 and O3 for London at a spatial scale of 20 m × 20 m. Model evaluation has demonstrated reasonable agreement with measurements from 80 monitoring sites in London. For NO2 the model evaluation statistics gave 73% of the hourly concentrations within a factor of two of observations, a mean bias of -4.7 ppb and normalised mean bias of -0.17, a RMSE value of 17.7 and an r value of 0.58. The equivalent results for O3 were 61% (FAC2), 2.8 ppb (MB), 0.15 (NMB), 12.1 (RMSE) and 0.64 (r). Analysis of the errors in the model predictions by hour of the week showed the need for improvements in predicting the magnitude of road transport related NO X emissions as well as the hourly emissions scaling in the model. These findings are consistent with recent evidence of UK road transport NO X emissions, reported elsewhere. The predictions of wind speed using the WRF model also influenced the model results and contributed to the daytime over prediction of NO X concentrations at the central London background site at Kensington and Chelsea. An investigation of the use of a simple NO-NO2-O3 chemistry scheme showed good performance close to road sources, and this is also consistent with previous studies. The coupling of the two models raises an issue of emissions double counting. Here, we have put forward a pragmatic solution to this problem with the result that a median double counting error of 0.42% exists across 39 roadside sites in London. Finally, whilst the model can be improved, the current results show promise and demonstrate that the use of a combination of regional scale and local scale models can provide a practical modelling tool for policy development at intergovernmental, national and local authority level, as well as for use in epidemiological studies.
