The dynamics of phosphorus are intricately governed by geological and ecological processes. Examining phosphorus dynamics in volcanic islands can enhance our comprehension of its behavior within such unique geological systems. However, research on phosphorus dynamics in volcanic islands remains limited. We investigated the phosphorus content of volcaniclastic rocks and basalt soils from Weizhou Island, China, to understand the influencing factors on phosphorus dynamics. The results indicate that in the volcaniclastic profile, phosphorus concentrates at 20-40 cm (17 mg/kg), decreases at 40-60 cm (11.9 mg/kg), and increases at 80-200 cm up to 46.4 mg/kg proximate to the bedrock, for the basalt profile, phosphorus content increases from the surface (80.2 mg/kg) towards the bedrock (83.9 mg/kg). The differences in phosphorus distribution between volcaniclastic rocks and basalts reflect the influence of parent material, rock weathering degree, carbonate content, topographic elevation, sea level changes, and geological activities. A strong positive correlation (R = 0.96907) between total and available phosphorus has been observed, suggesting that total phosphorus content effectively predicts available phosphorus content. Volcaniclastic rocks in wharves and high-elevation areas show low total phosphorus, while forest land with dense vegetation and neutral to alkaline soil supports higher total phosphorus due to enhanced bioavailability for plant absorption and utilization. Overall, the basalt soil of the volcanic island Weizhou Island demonstrates superior long-term fertility compared to the volcaniclastic soil. Despite its low total phosphorus content, it mainly exists in a highly bioavailable form, facilitating plant absorption, which is crucial for enhancing agricultural yields and ecosystem restoration on volcanic islands.

Intra-arc diversity in volcanic activity and composition is ubiquitous, but its underlying causes remain largely unresolved in many settings. In this work, we examine such variability in the Grenadines archipelago, southern Lesser Antilles arc. Here, juxtaposed volcanic centres exhibit eruptive longevities and chemistries distinct from northern counterparts in the same arc. Our goal is to explain this deviation by investigating variations in magmatic processes using petrological data from erupted crustal xenoliths and lavas, and interpreting these findings within the context of the archipelago's tectonic history and geophysical structure. Textural analyses of xenoliths reveal crystallization over a wide range of pressure-temperature-melt composition conditions in the crust. Mineral phases display discrete compositional trends pointing towards significant inter-island variability in underlying plumbing systems. The geochemical variety of erupted magmas is reminiscent of the entire arc. We speculate that the Grenadines represents the early onset of subduction forming the modern-day Lesser Antilles arc. Extrusive volcanism initiated as submarine activity. Subsequent uplift eroded the original topography of these volcanic centres following the eventual cessation of volcanism in the Neogene. The positioning of the Grenadines on an elevated platform provides rare modern insight into early arc crust formation not commonly preserved in established active arcs.

The occurrence of various N-related human activities increases the difficulty in distinguishing the major sources of NO3- contamination in groundwater, especially in areas with mixed land uses. In addition, the estimation of the timing and pathways of NO3- is necessary to better understand the processes of NO3- contamination in the subsurface aquifer system. This study applied environmental tracers, such as stable isotopes and age tracers (δ15N and δ18O of NO3-, δ11B, chlorofluorocarbons, and 3H), to elucidate the sources, timing, and pathways of NO3- contamination in the groundwaters of the Hanrim area, which has suffered from illegal disposal of livestock wastes since the 1980s, and also characterizes them based on mixed N-contaminant sources such as chemical fertilizers and sewage. The combined use of δ15N and δ11B overcame the limitation of using only NO3- isotopes for the identification of overlapping sources of N and successfully identified the major source of N as livestock wastes. The lumped parameter model (LPM) estimated the binary mixing of the young (age: 23-40 years, NO3-N: 2.55-15.10 mg/L) and old (age: >60 years, NO3-N: <3 mg/L) groundwaters, and explained their age mixing behaviors. The young groundwater was highly affected by livestock-derived N loading during 1987-1998, which coincides with the period of improper dumping of livestock wastes. Furthermore, the young groundwater with elevated NO3-N followed the historical NO3-N curves with younger ages (6 and 16 years) than those derived from the LPM, suggesting the possibility of faster inflows of livestock wastes through the permeable volcanic structures. This study demonstrated that a comprehensive understanding of NO3- contamination processes can be achieved using environmental tracer methods, which enables the efficient management of groundwater resources in areas with multiple N sources.

Microplastic (MPs) contamination in groundwater has received massive attention since plastic waste has been released directly into the environment. This study investigates MPs contamination in groundwater on the Jeju volcanic Island, Korea. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to identify MPs in groundwater from volcanic islands. A total of 21 sites were sampled for groundwater wells and springs in July and September (2021). Sampling was performed without cross-contamination through quality assurance and quality control. The results showed that MPs abundance ranged from 0.006 to 0.192 particles/L in groundwater samples. Additionally, MPs were detected in deep groundwater wells where the groundwater level was 143 m below ground surface. Eight MPs polymer types, including polypropylene, polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyvinyl chloride, polystyrene, polyamide, acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, and polyurethane, were detected using Micro-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (µ-FT-IR). Most of the detected MPs size ranged from 20 to 100 µm, accounting for 95% of the total. Fragments and fiber shaped MPs were detected, with the majority of them being fragmented in groundwater samples. The concentrations of MPs and major ions in groundwater showed a positive correlation. A negative correlation was observed between MPs concentration and topographic elevation (r = -0.59, p = 0.01). The source of MPs contamination is most likely attributed to agricultural activities, such as plastic mulching and greenhouses, which account for most of the land use in the study area. In this study, MPs entered the aquifer through the soil at the surface and seeped through cracks in fractured rock on basalt with sealed groundwater wells. This study takes 500 L of samples to prevent sample bias, reveal plastic contamination in groundwater, and indicating the characteristics and sources of contaminated plastics.

Metal and metalloid concentrations in Black Triggerfish, Melichthys niger (Tetraodontiformes, Balistidae), and sediments from Trindade Island, an isolated, pristine, and understudied environment in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean were determined. Several elements were detected in sediment, including Rare Earth Elements (REE). Hg and the REE Nd were, however, not detected. Elements determined in triggerfish are indicative of systemic circulation and the presence of toxic elements indicates an exposure source. No significant associations were detected between elements in fish organs and total length, suggesting no bioaccumulation with age, nor between organs and sediment, indicating probable dietary origin. Biliary excretion indicated a local chronic source of As and Cd and non-quantifiable REE elimination. Hg concentrations were over thresholds that affect fish biochemistry processes. These baseline data are valuable concerning elemental contamination in remote oceanic islands, with the potential to be applied to future biomonitoring efforts and conservation measures for reef ecosystems worldwide.

Weizhou Island and Xieyang Island are two large and young volcanic sea islands in the northern part of the South China Sea. In this study, high-throughput sequencing (HTS) of 16S rRNA genes was used to explore the diversity of Actinobacteria in the Weizhou and Xieyang Islands. Moreover, a traditional culture-dependent method was utilized to isolate Actinobacteria, and their antibacterial and cytotoxic activities were detected. The alpha diversity indices (ACE metric) of the overall bacterial communities for the larger island (Weizhou) were higher than those for the smaller island (Xieyang). A beta diversity analysis showed a more dispersive pattern of overall bacterial and actinobacterial communities on a larger island (Weizhou). At the order level, Frankiales, Propionibacteriales, Streptomycetales, Micrococcales, Pseudonocardiales, Micromonosporales, Glycomycetales, Corynebacteriales, and Streptosporangiales were the predominant Actinobacteria. A total of 22.7% of the OTUs shared 88%-95% similarity with some known groups. More interestingly, 15 OTUs formed a distinct and most predominant clade, and shared identities of less than 95% with any known families. This is the first report about this unknown group and their 16S rRNA sequences obtained from volcanic soils. A total of 268 actinobacterial strains were isolated by the culture-dependent method. Among them, 55 Streptomyces species were isolated, representing that 76.6% of the total. S. variabilis and S. flavogriseus were the most abundant. Moreover, some rare Actinobacteria were isolated. These included Micromonospora spp., Nocardia spp., Amycolatopsis spp., Tsukamurella spp., Mycobacterium spp., and Nonomuraea spp. Among them, eight Streptomyces spp. exhibited antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus. Only three strains inhibited the growth of Escherichia coli. Four strains showed good activity against aquatic pathogenic bacterial strains of Streptococcus iniae. The cytotoxicity assay results showed that 27 strains (10.07%) exhibited cytotoxic activity against HeLa and A549 cell lines. Many actinobacterial strains with cytotoxic activity were identified as rare Actinobacteria, which illustrated that volcanic islands are vast reservoirs for Actinobacteria with promising antibacterial and cytotoxic activity. This study may significantly improve our understanding of actinobacterial communities on volcanic islands. The isolated Actinobacteria showed promising prospects for future use.

Novel thermophilic heterotrophic bacteria were isolated from the subsurface of the volcanic island Surtsey off the south coast of Iceland. The strains were isolated from tephra core and borehole fluid samples collected below 70 m depth. The Gram-negative bacteria were rod-shaped (0.3-0.4 µm wide, 1.5-7 µm long), aerobic, non-sporulating and non-motile. Optimal growth was observed at 70 °C, at pH 7-7.5 and with 1% NaCl. Phylogenetic analysis identified the strains as members of the genus Rhodothermus. The type strain, ISCAR-7401T, was genetically distinct from its closest relatives Rhodothermus marinus DSM 4252T and Rhodothermus profundi PRI 2902T based on 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity (95.81 and 96.01%, respectively), genomic average nucleotide identity (73.73 and 72.61%, respectively) and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (17.6 and 16.9%, respectively). The major fatty acids of ISCAR-7401T were iso-C17:0, anteiso-C15:0, anteiso-C17:0 and iso-C15:0 (>10 %). The major isoprenoid quinone was MK-7 while phosphatidylethanolamine, diphosphatidylglycerol, an unidentified aminophospholipid and a phospholipid were the predominant polar lipid components. Based on comparative chemotaxonomic, genomic and phylogenetic analyses, we propose that the isolated strain represents a novel species of the genus Rhodothermus with the name Rhodothermus bifroesti sp. nov. The type strain is ISCAR-7401T (=DSM 112103T=CIP 111906T).

On volcanic islands, the release of animals from predators and competitors can lead to increased body size and population density as well as the expanded habitat use of introduced animals relative to their mainland counterparts. Such alterations might facilitate the spread of diseases on islands when these exotic animals also carry pathogenic agents; however, this has rarely been investigated. The commensal Asian house rat (Rattus tanezumi) is confined to human residential surroundings in mainland Taiwan but can be observed in the forests of nearby Orchid Island, which is a tropical volcanic island. Orchid Island is also a hot spot for scrub typhus, a lethal febrile disease transmitted by larval trombiculid mites (chiggers) that are infected primarily with the rickettsia Orientia tsutsugamushi (OT). We predicted an increase in chigger abundance when rodents (the primary host of chiggers) invade forests from human settlements since soils are largely absent in the latter habitat but necessary for the survival of nymphal and adult mites. A trimonthly rodent survey at 10 sites in three habitats (human residential, grassland, and forest) found only R. tanezumi and showed more R. tanezumi and chiggers in forests than in human residential sites. There was a positive association between rodent and chigger abundance, as well as between rodent body weight and chigger load. Lastly, >95% of chiggers were Leptotrombidium deliense and their OT infection rates were similar among all habitats. Our study demonstrated potentially elevated risks of scrub typhus when this commensal rat species is allowed to invade natural habitats on islands. Additionally, while the success of invasive species can be ascribed to their parasites being left behind, island invaders might instead obtain more parasites if the parasite requires only a single host (e.g., trombiculid mite), is a host generalist (e.g., L. deliense), and is transferred from unsuitable to suitable habitats (i.e., human settlements on the mainland to forests on an island).

Volcanic eruptions are one of the largest natural disturbances and are followed by the establishment of novel plant and animal communities in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the role of pre-eruption vegetation in the establishment of arthropod communities after volcanic disturbances is currently unknown. Here, we asked whether the legacy of pre-eruption vegetation mediates the community structure of ground-dwelling arthropods after volcanic disturbances. The 2015 eruption in Kuchinoerabu-jima Island, southwest Japan, caused two types of disturbances [a pyroclastic flow and a lahar (i.e., mudflow)] in three types of forests (broad-leaved, black pine, and cedar). We hypothesized that pre-eruption vegetation would influence the community structure of ground-dwelling arthropods after the disturbance, and we expected that these effects from vegetation would be more prevalent for the less severe disturbances. The total abundance of ground-dwelling arthropods decreased more in the lahar than the pyroclastic flow, and arthropod species composition showed a greater change after the lahar. These findings suggest that the lahar disturbance was more severe than the pyroclastic disturbance. Contrary to expectations, the difference in the arthropod species composition among the vegetation types was greatest after the lahar. After the pyroclastic flow, leaf litter remained to some degree with all the vegetation types. After the lahar disturbance, however, although the litter in the cedar forests remained, the litter disappeared completely from broad-leaved and black pine forests. The disappearance of litter from these two forest types after the lahar may be responsible for the greater difference in arthropod species composition among the vegetation types. This study shows that the legacy effects of pre-eruption vegetation on terrestrial arthropod communities after volcanic disturbance were different depending on the type of disturbance. Focusing on the role of pre-eruption biotic factors would contribute to a better understanding of the recovery processes of terrestrial ecosystems after large natural disturbances.

RESUMO

Representatives of some poorly known spider species collected in the rainforest litter of the Orchid Island (Taiwan) are illustrated and discussed here. A new species, Brignoliella tao sp. nov. (Fam. Tetrablemmidae), endemic to Orchid Island, is described based on both sexes. The previously unknown female of Theridiosoma triumphale Zhao Li, 2012 (Fam. Theridiosomatidae), is described for the first time. Zoma taiwanica (Zhang, Zhu Tso 2006) comb. nov., from the same family, is illustrated and its transfer from the genus Theridiosoma O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1879 to Zoma Saaristo, 1996 is proposed on the basis of morphological characters. Habitus and genitalia of the endemic species Gongylidioides angustus Tu Li, 2006 (Fam. Linyphiidae) are also illustrated.

Volcanic soils cover only approximately 1% of the Earth's surface, yet they support 10% of the world's population due to their inherent fertility. However, deep magmatic processes may lead to depletion of certain elements in volcanic rocks. The imbalance of essential elements, such as cobalt, in soil parent materials can affect the health of plants and grazing animals and, thus, humans. Within the particular geological context of the Azores, the present study aims to assess cobalt concentration in volcanic soils to predict the risk of cobalt deficiency in animals and humans. Samples from agricultural topsoils and pasture grass were collected in six volcanic regions of São Miguel Island, and their physicochemical properties were measured, including selected transition metal element contents, such as iron, manganese and cobalt. The soil cobalt concentration was below 5 mg/kg in Povoação< Furnas/Congro< Sete Cidades< Fogo and was higher than 10 mg/kg in Picos< Nordeste. Cobalt concentrations were very low in pasture grass. Values below 0.1 mg/kg were observed in Furnas/Congro

Fernando de Noronha is a small volcanic archipelago in the Southern Atlantic, some 350 km NE of the city of Natal in NE Brazil. These remote volcanic islands represent a largely pristine environment, distant from sources of anthropogenic contamination. This study was carried out to determine the natural concentrations of Ag, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb, V and Zn in the A and B horizons of soils of Fernando de Noronha. The aims of the study were twofold: determine whether there is a relationship between the bedrock geology and soils and to establish quality reference values for soils from Fernando de Noronha. Soil samples were subjected to acid digestion by the USEPA method 3051A, and metals were determined by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrophotometry. The results showed that the trace element distribution largely reflects the geochemistry of the underlying volcanic rocks of the Remedios and Quixaba Formations. The results demonstrate that the concentrations of Ba, Cr, Zn, Ni and Cu from the soils of the volcanic Fernando de Noronha archipelago are higher than those found in soils from continental Brazil. However, concentrations of Ni, Cu and Co are lower in soils of the archipelago as compared to other volcanic islands throughout the world. The elevated trace element concentrations of the volcanic parent material of Fernando de Noronha soils seem to be the main factor governing the relatively high natural concentrations of trace elements.

The island of Fuerteventura is the oldest of the Canary Islands' volcanic archipelago. It is constituted by volcanic submarine and subaerial activity and intrusive Miocene events, with some residual later volcanism and Quaternary volcanic deposits that have favored groundwater recharge. The climate is arid, with an average rainfall that barely attains 60 mm/year in the coast and up to 200 mm/year in the highlands. The aquifer recharge is small but significant; it is brackish due to large airborne atmospheric salinity, between 7 and 15 gm(-2)year(-1) of chloride deposition, and high evapo-concentration in the soil. The average recharge is estimated to be less than about 5 mm/year at low altitude and up to 10 mm/year in the highlands, and up to 20 mm/year associated to recent lava fields. Hydrochemical and water isotopic studies, supported by water table data and well and borehole descriptions, contribute a preliminary conceptual model of groundwater flow and water origin in the Betancuria area, the central area of the island. In general, water from springs and shallow wells tends to be naturally brackish and of recent origin. Deep saline groundwater is found and is explained as remnants of very old marine water trapped in isolated features in the very low permeability intrusive rocks. Preliminary radiocarbon dating indicates that this deep groundwater has an apparent age of less than 5000 years BP but it is the result of mixing recent water recharge with very old deep groundwater. Most of the groundwater flow occurs through the old raised volcanic shield of submarine and subaerial formations and later Miocene subaerial basalts. Groundwater transit time through the unsaturated zone is of a few decades, which allows the consideration of long-term quasi-steady state recharge. Transit times are up to a few centuries through the saturated old volcanics and up to several millennia in the intrusive formations, where isolated pockets of very old water may exist.
