RESUMO

New tools and software in systems biology require testing and validation on reaction networks with desired characteristics such as number of reactions or oscillating behaviors. Often, there is only a modest number of published models that are suitable, so researchers must generate reaction networks with the desired characteristics, a process that can be computationally expensive. To reduce these computational costs, we developed a data base of synthetic reaction networks to facilitate reuse. The current database contains thousands of networks generated using directed evolution. The network are of two types: (1) those with oscillations in species concentrations and (2) those for which no oscillation was found using directed evolution. To facilitate access to networks of interest, the database is queryable by the number of species and reactants, the presence or absence of autocatalytic and degradation reactions, and the network behavior. Our analysis of the data revealed some interesting insights, such as the population of oscillating networks possess more autocatalytic reactions compared to random control networks. In the future, this database will be expanded to include other network behaviors.

RESUMO

The Lifestyle Medicine Education Collaborative (LMEd) hosted the "Champions of Change" Medical School Leaders workshop at the 2017 American College of Lifestyle Medicine annual conference. Presentations focused on the following: (1) accelerating adoption and implementation of lifestyle medicine (LM) education in medical schools through collaboration and action networks that produce positive results, (2) showcasing medical school champions and their work in LM education leadership, and (3) helping participants create a roadmap for how to engage with LMEd and implement LM education in their own medical school.

Manual actions are a hallmark of humanness. Their underlying neural circuitry gives rise to species-specific skills and interacts with language processes. In particular, multiple studies show that hand-related expressions - verbal units evoking manual activity - variously affect concurrent manual actions, yielding apparently controversial results (interference, facilitation, or null effects) in varied time windows. Through a systematic review of 108 experiments, we show that such effects are driven by several factors, such as the level of verbal processing, action complexity, and the time-lag between linguistic and motor processes. We reconcile key empirical patterns by introducing the Hand-Action-Network Dynamic Language Embodiment (HANDLE) model, an integrative framework based on neural coupling dynamics and predictive-coding principles. To conclude, we assess HANDLE against the backdrop of other action-cognition theories, illustrate its potential applications to understand high-level deficits in motor disorders, and discuss key challenges for further development. In sum, our work aligns with the 'pragmatic turn', moving away from passive and static representationalist perspectives to a more dynamic, enactive, and embodied conceptualization of cognitive processes.

RESUMO

Future Earth is an international research platform providing the knowledge and support to accelerate our transformations to a sustainable world. Future Earth 2025 Vision identified eight key focal challenges, and challenge #6 is to "Improve human health by elucidating, and finding responses to, the complex interactions amongst environmental change, pollution, pathogens, disease vectors, ecosystem services, and people's livelihoods, nutrition and well-being." Several studies, including the Rockefeller Foundation/Lancet Planetary Health Commission Report of 2015, the World Health Organization/Convention on Biological Diversity report and those by oneHEALTH (former ecoHEALTH), have been conducted over the last 30 years. Knowledge-Action Networks (KANs) are the frameworks to apply Future Earth principles of research to related activities that respond to societal challenges. Future Earth Health Knowledge-Action Network will connect health researchers with other natural and social scientists, health and environmental policy professionals and leaders in government, the private sector and civil society to provide research-based solutions based on better, integrated understanding of the complex interactions between a changing global environment and human health. It will build regional capacity to enhance resilience, protect the environment and avert serious threats to health and will also contribute to achieving Sustainable Development Goals. In addition to the initial partners, Future Earth Health Knowledge-Action Network will further nourish collaboration with other on-going, leading research programmes outside Future Earth, by encouraging them in active participation.
