RESUMO
Functional third components targeted to improve a specific property of organic solar cells is an effective strategy. However, introducing a third component to simultaneously improve efficiency and stability and achieve good performance in thick-film devices has rarely been reported. Herein, low diffusion third components IDCN and ID2CN are reported to achieve a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.08% and a high short-circuit current (J SC) of 27.82 mA cm-2, one of the highest values based on PM6:Y6. They increase light harvesting in the range of 400-500 nm while enhancing energy transfer via Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). A tightly ordered molecular arrangement is achieved by modulating the preaggregation and film formation kinetics of Y6, which enhance exciton dissociation and charge transport. Moreover, the low-diffusion third component can effectively restrict the diffusion of Y6 to improve the morphology stability, and the T90 lifetime is increased from 689 to 1545 h. In 300 nm thick-film devices, PM6:ID2CN:Y6 achieves a PCE of 15.01%, much higher than PM6:Y6's 12.83%, demonstrating the great potential of ID2CN in thick-film devices.

Rigid and fragile nature of collagen-based materials cross-linked with biocompatible aldehyde-functionalized polysaccharides remains a challenge. Drawing inspiration from the pangolins' protective barrier, we introduce a novel cross-linker with a flexible chain to impart a "rigid-flexible coupled structure" to the collagen-based matrix. Successful integration of dibenzaldehyde-terminated-PEG (DF-PEG) into collagen molecules was confirmed by XRD and FTIR analyses. CD measurements demonstrated that the intact triple-helical structure was preserved in all samples. Distinct effects of DF-PEG with varying molecular weights on the aggregation behavior of collagen molecules were evaluated using multiple quantitative analysis techniques. Specifically, when the molecular weight of DF-PEG was below 20,000, multipoint hydrogen bonds and Schiff-base linkages were produced as the molecular weight of DF-PEG increased, which synergistically enhanced the aggregation behavior of collagen molecules. While the aggregation behavior of collagen molecules was slightly diminished upon the molecular weight of DF-PEG reached 20,000. This reduction can be attributed to the limited accessibility of the molecular reactive sites in the extended DF-PEG chains. Finally, a computational test of the binding interactions between collagen molecules and DF-PEG was conducted to validate the experimental results. Our biomimetic design strategy offers a new approach for the preparation of collagen-based materials with exceptional physicochemical properties.
RESUMO
Eucryptorrhynchus scrobiculatus (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is a notorious pest of Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle (Sapindales: Simaroubaceae). E. scrobiculatus adults typically aggregate under leaves and in soil crevices at the base of A. altissima in the field. We hypothesize that the environmental factors and conspecific signals determine their aggregation behavior. To test this, we investigated adult numbers in light-exposed and shaded areas of the sample trees and conducted experiments in both field and lab settings. Results revealed that (i) greater adult distribution in shaded areas; (ii) significant influence of temperature and illumination on aggregation tendency in the field; (iii) no gender-based difference in aggregation degree and maximum aggregation between light and dark; (iv) the host plant triggering the aggregation tendency, negatively affected in the absence; (v) the aggregation tendency of E. scrobiculatus weakened with the temperature gradually changing to ordinary temperature; and (vi) mutual attraction and chemical attraction between males and females. Thus, the aggregation behavior was influenced by factors including temperature, light intensity, host plant, and conspecific signals, but light's role was not obvious in the lab.

The potential of potassium chloride (KCl) to be used as a substitute for sodium chloride (NaCl) was studied by monitoring the effects of salt treatment on thermal behavior, aggregation kinetics, rheological properties, and protein conformational changes. The results show that the addition of KCl can improve solubility, reduce turbidity and particle size, and positively influence rheological parameters such as apparent viscosity, consistency coefficient (K value), and fluidity index (n). These changes indicate delayed thermal denaturation. In addition, KCl decreased the content of ß-sheet and random coil structures and increased the content of α-helix and ß-turn structures. The optimal results were obtained with 2% KCl addition, leading to an increase in Tp up to 85.09 °C. The correlation results showed that Tp was positively correlated with solubility, α-helix and ß-turn but negatively correlated with ΔH, turbidity, ß-sheet and random coil. Overall, compared to NaCl, 2% KCl is more effective in delaying the thermal aggregation of LWE, and these findings lay a solid theoretical foundation for the study of sodium substitutes in heat-resistant liquid egg products.
RESUMO
Salted egg yolks have a tender, loose, gritty, and oily texture and are commonly employed as fillings in baked goods. This study investigated the formation mechanism of egg yolk gels using three different pickling methods: NaCl, sucrose, and mixed groups. The results revealed that of these pickling methods, egg yolks pickled with the mixture had the lowest moisture content (11.59% at 25°C and 10.21% at 45°C), almost no free water content, and the highest hardness (19.11 N at 25°C and 31.01 N at 45°C). Intermolecular force measurements indicated that pickling with the mixture mitigated the surface hardening effect of sucrose and facilitated protein cross-linking. Moreover, confocal laser scanning microscopy of the egg yolk gels pickled with the mixture displayed macromolecular aggregates and oil exudation, suggesting that this method partially disrupted the lipoprotein structure and notably promoted yolk protein aggregation and lipid release. Overall, egg yolks formed a dense gel via the mixed pickling method owing to the ionic concentration and dehydration effects. These findings show the impact of NaCl and sucrose in pickling egg yolks, providing a crucial foundation for developing innovative and desirable egg yolk products. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This study introduces a novel pickling strategy that combines sucrose and NaCl for egg yolk processing. The egg yolk pickled using this method exhibited improved quality according to the evaluated textural characteristics, moisture distribution, and protein aggregation behavior. The findings may broaden the use of sucrose as a pickling agent for egg yolk processing and provide new ideas for developing and producing pickled eggs and other food products.

RNA N6-methyladenosine (m6A), as the most abundant modification of messenger RNA, can modulate insect behaviors, but its specific roles in aggregation behaviors remain unexplored. Here, we conducted a comprehensive molecular and physiological characterization of the individual components of the methyltransferase and demethylase in the migratory locust Locusta migratoria. Our results demonstrated that METTL3, METTL14 and ALKBH5 were dominantly expressed in the brain and exhibited remarkable responses to crowding or isolation. The individual knockdown of methyltransferases (i.e., METTL3 and METTL14) promoted locust movement and conspecific attraction, whereas ALKBH5 knockdown induced a behavioral shift toward the solitary phase. Furthermore, global transcriptome profiles revealed that m6A modification could regulate the orchestration of gene expression to fine tune the behavioral aggregation of locusts. In summary, our in vivo characterization of the m6A functions in migratory locusts clearly demonstrated the crucial roles of the m6A pathway in effectively modulating aggregation behaviors.

The research focused on the development and evaluation of special detergents for washing fruits and vegetables, with the primary emphasis on removing pesticide residues. The research aimed to improve food safety and meet consumer preferences for effective cleaning of food products. Using the cloud point characteristic of non-ionic surfactants, a 'smart' detergent was developed to adapt to typical washing conditions. Optimization of the detergent system composition was conducted and the properties of the surfactant system in relation to the cloud point were investigated to highlight the importance of precise control over detergent behavior in response to temperature changes. The physicochemical properties study of the model washing baths included surface tension, aggregate size, solubilization properties, and foaming ability. A model detergent, tailored for both cleaning efficacy and safety against the skin, was developed. Washing efficacy tests demonstrated the superior ability of the designed detergent to remove pesticide residues, eliminating consumer concerns and promoting healthier and safer food consumption. The conducted research paves the way for innovative and safe detergents for washing fruits and vegetables, thereby increasing food safety and consumer satisfaction.

Metal ions have been considered as an important factor on fibrils assembly. Herein, a comprehensive analysis of specific ions effect on fibril formation and structural changes was investigated. The addition of ions (except Zn2+) accelerated the aggregation kinetics of rice glutelin fibrils (RGFs) from 0.93 to 1.28-2.19 h-1. In addition, the fibrillization rate followed the order of NH4+ > Li+ > Na+ > K+ > Cu2+ > Mg2+ > Ca2+ > Zn2+. The highest yield and length of fibrils were observed with Ca2+, probably due to the ionic bridging effect and hydrated capacity of Ca2+. However, Cu2+ reduced the fibrils yield, which was attributable to the fact that Cu2+ disrupted ß-sheet structure and inhibited the transition of monomer to fibrils. The polymorphism of fibrils was observed with different salts, and the light metals presented a superior effect on fibrils formation than heavy metals. Overall, this work will provide a further information into how to tune the structure of RGFs using various ions.

A hexameric quaternary ammonium salt surfactant Tz-6C12QC featuring a rigid triazine spacer and six ammonium groups was synthesized. The molecular structure and aggregation behavior of Tz-6C12QC were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, surface tension, conductivity, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy, etc. Dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation was employed to investigate the self-assembly behavior of Tz-6C12QC at different concentrations. The rheological behavior of the polyacrylamide/Tz-6C12QC system was characterized by shear rheology. The results indicated that Tz-6C12QC exhibited superior surface activity and lower surface tension compared to conventional surfactants. Rheology analysis revealed that Tz-6C12QC had a significant viscosity reduction effect on polyacrylamide. DLS and TEM indicated that, as the concentration of Tz-6C12QC increased, monomer associations, spherical aggregations, vesicles, tubular micelles, and bilayer vesicles were sequentially formed in the solution. This study presents a synthetic approach for polysurfactants with a rigid spacer and sheds light on the self-assembly process of micelles.
RESUMO
Micellar casein (MC) has a unique gastric colloidal behavior in response to Ca2+ cross-linking, and its aggregation properties are closely related to pepsin and gastric acid. In this study, MC with different levels of colloidal calcium phosphate (CCP) was obtained by high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) at different pressures, followed by spray drying to obtain the powders. Different amounts of calcium chloride (exogenous Ca2+) were added to MC powders prior to in vitro simulated digestion to investigate the effect of exogenous serum Ca2+ levels on the aggregation behavior and the structure change of curds generated in gastric tract. The results revealed that HHP induced the emergence of more Ca2+-binding sites, thus Ca2+ was more likely to bind to MC matrix with low CCP levels. Meanwhile, high serum Ca2+ level provided more opportunities to form aggregates. The Highest pressure (500 MPa) with the highest Ca2+ level (5 mM) caused the lowest solubility aggregates, which were only 30% at the end of gastric digestion (120 min), half of the control sample (0 MPa with 0.15 mM Ca2+). The results of wide-angle X-ray scattering / small-angle X-ray scattering suggested that both pepsin and gastric acid-induced aggregation via Ca2+ as a bridge. For pepsin, Ca2+ cross-linked between para-κ-casein; For gastric acid, Ca2+ recombined phosphorylation sites and caused cross-linking of casein subunits.

CONTEXT: Ultrathin overlays are preventive maintenance measures; the tensile and shear stresses generated inside a structural layer under vehicle load are greater than those of conventional thickness asphalt pavement. Therefore, asphalt binders must use high-viscosity and elasticity unique cementing materials to ensure stability. To investigate the modification mechanism of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS)/ethylene-butyl acrylate-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer (PTW) high-viscosity modified asphalt binder suitable for ultrathin overlays, the compatibility and molecular behavior of SBS/PTW high-viscosity modified asphalt binder were analyzed by the molecular dynamics (MD) method. These research results provide a reference for preparing ultrathin overlay high-performance composite modified asphalt binder. METHODS: SBS molecular models, PTW molecular models, asphalt binder molecular models, SBS/asphalt binder blend systems, and SBS/PTW/asphalt binder blend systems were sequentially constructed using Materials Studio (MS) software. The compatibility of SBS, PTW, and SBS/PTW with asphalt binder and the diffusion coefficients of SBS, PTW, and SBS/PTW in the asphalt binder were investigated separately using the MD method. The mechanical properties and molecular behavior of SBS, PTW, and SBS/PTW blended with asphalt binder were studied. The research results indicate that the compatibility of PTW with asphalt binder is better than that of SBS with asphalt binder. PTW can effectively decrease the solubility parameter of asphalt binder and improve the compatibility between SBS and asphalt binder. PTW effectively improves the diffusion coefficient and interaction energy of SBS in asphalt binder by up to 29% and 83%. In addition, SBS/PTW had a significant positive effect on the mechanical properties of the asphalt binders, increasing the elastic modulus (E), bulk modulus (K), and shear modulus (G) of the asphalt binder by 4.6%, 9.5%, and 3.5%, respectively, compared to SBS. The results indicate that the SBS/PTW modified asphalt binder composite can significantly improve the high-temperature shear resistance of asphalt binder. Meanwhile, SBS and PTW improve the self-aggregation behavior between asphalt binder component molecules. The distance between the center of mass of asphalt binder and resin system molecules is increased. PTW enhances the extensibility of the branched chains of asphalt binder component molecules and improves the interaction between asphalt binder components and the chains. This further enhances the density and stability of the asphalt binder molecular structure system, improving the physical properties of the asphalt binder.
RESUMO
To understand the heat mediated cross-linking mechanism of gluten in the presence of wheat bran dietary fiber (WBDF), the effect of heat treatment on conformation and aggregation properties of wheat bran dietary fiber-gluten protein was comparatively investigated in this study. The results showed G' and G" increased after adding WBDF, then decreased after heating. The SE-HPLC, chemical interaction and surface hydrophobicity analysis revealed the WBDF participated in the rearrangement of intermolecular interactions and induced depolymerization behavior behavior of gluten via disulfide and non-covalent bonds at low temperatures (25 °C and 60 °C), but heating (at 95 °C) promoted these interactions via disulfide bonds. Besides, changes in the secondary structure of gluten protein induced by WBDF during heating were correlated with the steric hindrance and hydroxyl groups on WBDF. These results suggested that WBDF impeded the cross-linking and aggregation of gluten through the rearrangement of chemical bonds and physical entanglements, then this effect was weakened at high temperatures, most likely by improving the disulfide bonds among gluten proteins. This study consummates the understanding of the cross-linking mechanisms of gluten with WBDF during heating, and provides the theoretical basis for improving the quality and acceptability of whole wheat-based products.

Wasps in the genus Sclerodermus are ectoparasitoids that typically attack the larvae of woodboring coleopterans. Interest in these species is increasing as they are used in programs to control longhorn beetle pests of economic importance in China and have invasive pest control potential in Europe. Wasps may be mass reared for field release, but using the target host species can be time consuming and physically demanding. There is thus a need for factitious hosts with lower production costs and that are easier to rear. The present research focuses on Sclerodermus brevicornis, which was found in Italy in association with the invasive longhorn beetle, Psacothea hilaris hilaris, and can be laboratory reared on this longhorn beetle and on a factitious lepidopteran host, Corcyra cephalonica. As it is known that the biology of natural enemies can be influenced by the host they emerge from and that the behavior of S. brevicornis is relatively complex due to its degree of sociality (multiple foundress females cooperate to paralyze the host and produce offspring communally), we explored whether, and how, performance and behavioral traits of adult females are influenced by the host species on which they were reared, both when no choice or a choice of current host species was offered. We evaluated the survival of foundresses and their movements between offered hosts and their tendency to form groups with other foundresses according to kinship and host characteristics. We also evaluated the production of offspring and the timing of their development. We found that S. brevicornis reared from C. cephalonica do have some disadvantages compared with those that have developed on P. h. hilaris but also that they recognize, prefer, and can reproduce on P. h. hilaris. We conclude that the use of the more convenient factitious host for mass-rearing is unlikely to greatly compromise the potential of S. brevicornis to suppress longhorn beetle pests in the field.

Pheromone communication is central to the life history of insect parasites. Determining how pheromones affect parasite behavior can provide insights into host-parasite interactions and suggest novel avenues for parasite control. Lice infest thousands of bird and mammal species and feed on the host's feathers or blood. Despite the pervasiveness of lice in wild populations and the costs they exact on livestock and poultry industries, little is known about pheromone communication in this diverse group. Here, we test for pheromone communication in the wing lice (Columbicola columbae) of Rock Doves (Columba livia). Wing lice spend the majority of their lives on bird flight feathers where they hide from host preening by inserting their bodies between coarse feather barbs. To feed, wing lice must migrate to bird body regions where they consume the insulating barbs of contour feathers. We first show that wing lice readily form aggregations on flight feathers. Next, using a Y-tube olfactometer, we demonstrate that wing lice use pheromone communication to move toward groups of nearby conspecifics. This pheromone is likely an aggregation pheromone, as wing lice only produce the pheromone when placed on flight feathers. Finally, we found that when forced to choose between groups of male and female lice, male lice move toward male groups and females toward female groups, suggesting the use of multiple pheromones. Ongoing work aims to determine the chemical identity and function of these pheromones.

Magnetic nanotechnologies have been shown to be an efficient approach to the reduction of microplastic (MP) pollution in aquatic environments. However, uncertainties remain regarding the relationship between particle stability and MP removal under varying water conditions, hindering the practical application of magnetic nanotechnologies for MP removal. Herein, the influence of particle aggregation behavior on nano-scale MP removal by Fe3O4 nanoparticles (FNPs) was investigated, by monitoring dynamic light scattering parameters and analyzing the microstructures of particle aggregates. Results showed that 83.1 %-92.9 % of MPs could be removed by FNPs within 1 h, and MP removal exhibited a high degree of Pearson correlation (R = 0.95; P = 0.04) with particle aggregation behavior mediated by the FNPs dosage. Furthermore, pH-dependent electrostatic interactions significantly influenced particle aggregation behavior and the removal of MPs. Under pH <6.7 conditions, electrostatic attraction between electropositive FNPs and electronegative MPs led to charge neutralization-induced aggregation and efficient removal MP performance. Under increasingly saline conditions, compression of the electrical double layer enhanced the self-aggregation behavior of MPs, weakening the electrostatic repulsion between FNPs and MPs under alkaline conditions. Therefore, salinity improved the MP removal efficiency, especially under alkaline conditions, with MP removal increasing from 4.47 % to 55.1 % when the mass fraction of NaCl was increased from 0 % to 1 %. These findings further our understanding of the effect of aggregation behavior on MP removal by FNPs and highlight the potential for magnetic nanotechnology application in the removal of nano-scale MPs from aquatic environments, while also providing valuable insights for the design of FNP-based materials.
RESUMO
Anionic silicone surfactants have long been a neglected field. In this paper three anionic silicone surfactants were synthesized first time from dichloromethylvinylsilane through hydrolysis-condensation, "thiol-ene" photo- chemical and then salting reaction. The critical aggregate concentration (CAC), surface tension, minimum surface area per surfactant molecule and surface pressure at CAC were studied by both surface tension and electrical conductivity. The results showed that they had significant surface activity at the gas/liquid interface and were capable to reduce the surface tension of water to approximately 20â mN m-1 . The results of transmission electron microscopy showed that the three silicone surfactants self-assembled into spherical aggregates of uniform size in aqueous solution above the CAC. The dynamic light scattering results demonstrated that the size of the aggregates was determined to be in the range from 60 to 300â nm at 0.05â mol L-1 and the order of the size of the aggregates is (Me3 SiO)3 SiCO2 Li<(Me3 SiO)3 SiCO2 Na<(Me3 SiO)3 SiCO2 K.
RESUMO
Protein-containing food products are frequently heated during processing to passivate anti-nutritional components. However, heating also contributes to protein aggregation and gelation, which limits its application in protein-based aqueous systems. In this study, heat-stable soy protein particles (SPPs) were fabricated by preheating at 120 °C for 30 min and at 0.5% (w/v) protein concentration. Compared to untreated soy proteins (SPs), SPPs exhibited a higher denaturation ratio, stronger conformational rigidity, compacter colloidal structure, and higher surface charge. The aggregation state of SPs and SPPs at various heating conditions (temperatures, pH, ionic strength, and types) was analyzed by dynamic light scattering, atomic force microscopy, and cryo-scanning electron microscopy. SPPs showed less increase in particle size and greater anti-aggregation ability than SPs. When heated in the presence of salt ions (Na+, Ca2+) or at acidic conditions, both SPs and SPPs formed larger spherical particles, but the size increase rate of SPPs was significantly lower than SPs. These findings provide theoretical information for preparing heat-stable SPPs. Furthermore, the development of SPPs is conducive to designing protein-enriched ingredients for producing innovative foods.

Stability and narrow size distribution are among the main requirements that apply to drug formulations based on polymeric nanoparticles. In this study, we obtained a series of particles based on biodegradable poly(D,L-lactide)-b-poly(ethylene glycol) (P(D,L)LAn-b-PEG113) copolymers with varied hydrophobic P(D,L)LA block length n from 50 to 1230 monomer units stabilized by poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) by a simple "oil-in-water" emulsion method. We found that nanoparticles of P(D,L)LAn-b-PEG113 copolymers with relatively short P(D,L)LA block (n ≤ 180) are prone to aggregate in water. P(D,L)LAn-b-PEG113 copolymers with n ≥ 680 can form spherical unimodal particles with values of hydrodynamic diameter less than 250 nm and polydispersity less than 0.2. The aggregation behavior of P(D,L)LAn-b-PEG113 particles was elucidated in terms of tethering density and conformation of PEG chains at the P(D,L)LA core. Docetaxel (DTX) loaded nanoparticles based on P(D,L)LA680-b-PEG113 and P(D,L)LA1230-b-PEG113 copolymers were formulated and studied. It was observed that DTX-loaded P(D,L)LAn-b-PEG113 (n = 680, 1230) particles are characterized by high thermodynamic and kinetic stability in aqueous medium. The cumulative release of DTX from the P(D,L)LAn-b-PEG113 (n = 680, 1230) particles is sustained. An increase in P(D,L)LA block length results in a decrease in DTX release rate. The in vitro antiproliferative activity and selectivity studies revealed that DTX-loaded P(D,L)LA1230-b-PEG113 nanoparticles demonstrate better anticancer performance than free DTX. Favorable freeze-drying conditions for DTX nanoformulation based on P(D,L)LA1230-b-PEG113 particles were also established.
RESUMO
A series of sulfonate silicone surfactants possessing different hydrophobic groups were synthesized. Their adsorption and thermodynamic parameters in aqueous solutions were investigated by surface tension measurements, conductivity, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). These sulfonate-based anionic silicone surfactants exhibit significant surface activity and can reduce the surface tension of water to 19.6â mN m-1 at critical micelle concentration. The TEM and DLS results demonstrate that the three sulfonated silicone surfactants self-assemble into homogeneous sized vesicle-like aggregates in aqueous solution. Moreover, the size of the aggregates was determined to be in the range from 80 to 400â nm at 0.05â mol L-1 .
RESUMO
A mark-release-recapture experiment was conducted to evaluate the orientation of spotted lanternfly (SLF) Lycorma delicatula White (Hemiptera: Fulgoridae) nymphs when released equidistant between two trees. The experiment was repeated weekly for eight weeks in a heavily infested area with mature tree-of-heaven Ailanthus altissima (Mill.) Swingle (Sapindales: Simaroubaceae) planted in rows as ornamental street trees in Beijing, China. One tree in each pair received a methyl salicylate lure, and the lure was rotated between trees every week as it aged. Two additional independent variables for each tree were also analyzed: size and SLF population density. Marked-released SLF significantly chose trees with higher SLF population density over trees with lower density populations, and they also chose larger trees significantly more than smaller trees. Population density and tree size were better predictors of attraction than lures, but when those factors were controlled, SLF significantly chose trees with methyl salicylate lures over control trees for the first 4 weeks of lure life. Wild SLF distribution was assessed weekly, revealing strong aggregation in first and second instars that diminished with development to the third and fourth instars. Thus, nymphal SLF aggregate, and orientation is strongly guided by the presence of other SLF and tree size.
