RESUMO

Variables such as body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and waist/height ratio (WHtR) are used to assess cardiovascular risks associated with abdominal obesity. The Timed Up and Go (TTUG) test assesses mobility and the risk of falls, especially in the elderly and individuals with physical limitations. The objective was to correlate anthropometric indicators of cardiovascular risk (BMI, WC, WHtR) with performance on the TTUG test in elderly people who practice physical activity. METHODS: Observational, cross-sectional study, CAAE: 27116319.1.0000.8044. Active elderly participants in a public physical exercise program "Project 60 Up", promoted by the Municipal Secretariat for the Elderly of the City of Niterói, RJ, Brazil, were evaluated. Elderly people of both sexes, with independent locomotion and preserved cognitive status, were included and those with visual, hearing, severe mobility difficulties or neurological sequelae and imbalances were excluded. Anthropometric data were collected: BMI, WC, WHtR, and the TTUG test was performed. RESULTS: In the sample composed of 55 elderly people of both sexes, with an average age of 68 years, the means of the variables were: body weight (67.8 ± 12.7 kg), height (157.2 ± 8.4 cm), TTUG (10.3 ± 2 s), WC (93.3 ± 10.9 cm), WHtR (0.59), and BMI (27.4 ± 4.4). The correlations were between TTUG and age (r = -0.24, p = 0.69), TTUG and BMI (r = 0.111, p = 0.426), and WC and WHtR (r = 0.885, p < 0.000). Weak correlations were observed between TTUG and BMI and WC and WHtR, indicating that factors other than BMI and abdominal fat accumulation may have a greater influence on performance on the TTUG test. In this specific context of elderly people participating in a physical activity program, the results found may have been shaped by the very nature of the interventions carried out in the program, with factors such as muscular strength, flexibility and balance preserved and acquired through the practice of regular physical exercise. Despite the benefits of physical activity, managing weight and abdominal fat remains challenging for elderly individuals with high anthropometric measurements. CONCLUSIONS: Although many elderly people have anthropometric measurements above average levels, the results indicate that no negative influence on their performance on the TTUG was observed. However, the limitation of the sample size and the underrepresentation of elderly people ≥ 80 years and of men highlight the need for future studies with larger and more balanced samples to confirm these results.

BACKGROUND: The allometric body shape index (ABSI) and hip index (HI), as well as multi-trait body shape phenotypes, have not yet been compared in their associations with inflammatory markers. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between novel and traditional anthropometric indexes with inflammation using data from the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC) and UK Biobank cohorts. METHODS: Participants from EPIC (n = 17,943, 69.1% women) and UK Biobank (n = 426,223, 53.2% women) with data on anthropometric indexes and C-reactive protein (CRP) were included in this cross-sectional analysis. A subset of women in EPIC also had at least one measurement for interleukins, tumour necrosis factor alpha, interferon gamma, leptin, and adiponectin. Four distinct body shape phenotypes were derived by a principal component (PC) analysis on height, weight, body mass index (BMI), waist (WC) and hip circumferences (HC), and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). PC1 described overall adiposity, PC2 tall with low WHR, PC3 tall and centrally obese, and PC4 high BMI and weight with low WC and HC, suggesting an athletic phenotype. ABSI, HI, waist-to-height ratio and waist-to-hip index (WHI) were also calculated. Linear regression models were carried out separately in EPIC and UK Biobank stratified by sex and adjusted for age, smoking status, education, and physical activity. Results were additionally combined in a random-effects meta-analysis. RESULTS: Traditional anthropometric indexes, particularly BMI, WC, and weight were positively associated with CRP levels, in men and women. Body shape phenotypes also showed distinct associations with CRP. Specifically, PC2 showed inverse associations with CRP in EPIC and UK Biobank in both sexes, similarly to height. PC3 was inversely associated with CRP among women, whereas positive associations were observed among men. CONCLUSIONS: Specific indexes of body size and body fat distribution showed differential associations with inflammation in adults. Notably, our results suggest that in women, height may mitigate the impact of a higher WC and HC on inflammation. This suggests that subtypes of adiposity exhibit substantial variation in their inflammatory potential, which may have implications for inflammation-related chronic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Depressive symptoms are one of the most common psychiatric disorders, with a high lifetime prevalence rate among middle-aged and elderly Chinese. Obesity may be one of the risk factors for depressive symptoms, but there is currently no consensus on this view. Therefore, we investigate the relationship and predictive ability of 13 obesity- and lipid-related indices with depressive symptoms among middle-aged and elderly Chinese. METHODS: The data were obtained from The China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Our analysis includes individuals who did not have depressive symptoms at the baseline of the CHARLS Wave 2011 study and were successfully follow-up in 2013 and 2015. Finally, 3790 participants were included in the short-term (from 2011 to 2013), and 3660 participants were included in the long-term (from 2011 to 2015). The average age of participants in short-term and long-term was 58.47 years and 57.88 years. The anthropometric indicators used in this analysis included non-invasive [e.g. waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), and a body mass index (ABSI)], and invasive anthropometric indicators [e.g. lipid accumulation product (LAP), triglyceride glucose index (TyG index), and its-related indices (e.g. TyG-BMI, and TyG-WC)]. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to examine the predictive ability of various indicators for depressive symptoms. The association of depressive symptoms with various indicators was calculated using binary logistic regression. RESULTS: The overall incidence of depressive symptoms was 20.79% in the short-term and 27.43% in the long-term. In males, WC [AUC = 0.452], LAP [AUC = 0.450], and TyG-WC [AUC = 0.451] were weak predictors of depressive symptoms during the short-term (P < 0.05). In females, BMI [AUC = 0.468], LAP [AUC = 0.468], and TyG index [AUC = 0.466] were weak predictors of depressive symptoms during the long-term (P < 0.05). However, ABSI cannot predict depressive symptoms in males and females during both periods (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The research indicates that in the middle-aged and elderly Chinese, most obesity- and lipid-related indices have statistical significance in predicting depressive symptoms, but the accuracy of these indicators in prediction is relatively low and may not be practical predictors.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between perceived physical literacy and obesity-related outcomes among adolescents from Spain. Methods: This is a secondary cross-sectional analysis including a total sample of 845 Spanish adolescents (55.3% girls) aged 12-17 years from the Valle de Ricote (Region of Murcia) from the Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) project. Physical literacy was evaluated using the Spanish Perceived Physical Literacy Instrument for adolescents (S-PPLI). Body mass index was computed by taking the participants' body weight in kilograms and dividing it by the square of their height in meters, and body mass index (z score) and overweight/obesity and obesity were computed by the World Health Organization age- and sex-specific thresholds. Waist circumference was measured using a constant tension tape. Moreover, the waist-to-height ratio was calculated, and therefore, abdominal obesity was determined. Skinfold measurements were taken at the triceps and medial calf using calibrated steel calipers. Results: In general, the overall trend was downward (i.e., the higher the PPLI score the lower the obesity-related indicators), with the approximate significance of smooth terms being statistically significant for all models examined (p < 0.001). Adolescents with lower perceived physical literacy (PPL) showed the highest estimated marginal means of body mass index, body mass index z score, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, and skinfold (triceps and calf) and predictive probabilities of having excess weight, obesity, and abdominal obesity, while their counterparts with high PPL had the lowest. In addition, significant differences were observed for all the obesity-related indications between adolescents with low PPL and those with medium PPL (p-adjusted < 0.05 for all indicators), as well as with those with high PPL (p-adjusted < 0.05 for all indicators). Moreover, these significant differences were also shown for most indicators between adolescents with medium PPL and those with high PPL (except for obesity). Conclusion: Physical literacy could play a crucial role in maintaining more desirable obesity-related outcomes in adolescents. Adolescents with high perceived physical literacy showed lower obesity-related indicators (i.e., body mass index, body mass index z score, waist circumference, waist-to-height ratio, skinfolds), as well as a lower probability of having excess weight, obesity, and abdominal obesity.

BACKGROUND: Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma incidence rates vary between European and Asian populations. The reasons remain unclear. This two-sample two-step Mendelian randomisation (MR) study aimed to investigate the causal relationship between anthropometric indicators (AIs) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and follicular lymphoma (FL) and the possible mediating role of basal metabolic rate (BMR) in Europe. METHODS: We used the following AIs as exposures: body mass index (BMI), whole-body fat mass (WBFM), whole-body fat-free mass (WBFFM), waist circumference(WC), hip circumference(HC), standing height (SH), and weight(Wt). DLBCL and FL represented the outcomes, and BMR was a mediator. A two-sample MR analysis was performed to examine the association between AIs and DLBCL and FL onset. We performed reverse-MR analysis to determine whether DLBCL and FL interfered with the AIs. A two-step MR analysis was performed to determine whether BMR mediated the causality. FINDINGS: WBFFM and SH had causal relationships with FL. A causal association between AIs and DLBCL was not observed. Reverse-MR analysis indicated the causal relationships were not bidirectional. Two-step MR suggested BMR may mediate the causal effect of WBFFM and SH on FL. CONCLUSIONS: We observed a causal relationship between WBFFM and SH and the onset of FL in Europeans, Which may explain the high incidence of follicular lymphoma in Europeans.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the associations between a combined healthy lifestyle during the second and third trimesters and offspring anthropometric outcomes in China. METHODS AND STUDY DESIGN: We examined these associations among 548 participants from nine community health centers and three hospitals in the North China cohort. A pregnant women's healthy lifestyle score (HLS) was constructed based on six lifestyle factors: smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, sedentary behavior, diet, and gestational weight gain. Anthropometric indicators at birth like birth weight (BW), head circumference (HC), and birth length (BL) were collected, and weight to head circumference ratio (WHC, kg/m), body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) and Ponderal Index (PI, kg/m3) were calculated. Multivariate linear and logistic regression models were used to examine the effects of HLS during the second and third trimesters on anthropometric outcomes at birth, respectively. RESULTS: In fully adjusted models, we found a negative association between second and third-trimester HLS and offspring HC and a positive relationship between second-trimester HLS and BL (p<0.05). Neonates with mothers in the highest HLS tertile had a 5.6% relatively lower HC and 2.3% relatively longer body length than women in the lowest tertile. Each additional unit in third-trimester HLS had an associated decrease in HC by 0.96 cm. None of the associations between HLS and BW, WHC, BMI, and PI of offspring were observed. CONCLUSIONS: A healthy lifestyle score may significantly impact offspring head circumference and body length, supporting the important role of healthy lifestyles in improving the health of offspring.

The controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) measurement obtained from FibroScan® is a low-risk method of assessing fatty liver. This study investigated the association between the FibroScan® CAP values and nine anthropometric indicators, including the abdominal volume index (AVI), body fat percentage (BFP), body mass index (BMI), conicity index (CI), ponderal index (PI), relative fat mass (RFM), waist circumference (WC), waist-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (fatty liver). We analyzed the medical records of adult patients who had FibroScan® CAP results. CAP values <238 dB/m were coded as 0 (non- fatty liver) and ≥238 dB/m as 1 (fatty liver). An individual is considered to have class 1 obesity when their body mass index (BMI) ranges from 30 kg/m2 to 34.9 kg/m2. Class 2 obesity is defined by a BMI ranging from 35 kg/m2 to 39.9 kg/m2, while class 3 obesity is designated by a BMI of 40 kg/m2 or higher. Out of 1763 subjects, 908 (51.5%) had fatty liver. The BMI, WHtR, and PI were found to be more strongly correlated with the CAP by the cluster dendrogram with correlation coefficients of 0.58, 0.54, and 0.54, respectively (all p < 0.0001). We found that 28.3% of the individuals without obesity had fatty liver, and 28.2% of the individuals with obesity did not have fatty liver. The BMI, CI, and PI were significant predictors of fatty liver. The BMI, PI, and WHtR demonstrated better predictive ability, indicated by AUC values of 0.72, 0.68, and 0.68, respectively, a finding that was echoed in our cluster group analysis that showed interconnected clustering with the CAP. Therefore, of the nine anthropometric indicators we studied, the BMI, CI, PI, and WHtR were found to be more effective in predicting the CAP score, i.e., fatty liver.

Anthropometric studies conducted in 1884, 1928, 1946, 1965 and 1999 to study the characteristics of growth and weight indicators of children living in the territory of modern Chuvashia, partly reflected the influence of the living conditions of children in certain historical periods of the country's development: revolutions, civil and domestic wars, post-war stabilization, «perestroika¼. Over the last 22-year period, from 1999 to 2021, there has been the largest increase in the growth rate of indicators of the physical development of children and adolescents, which is considered as a positive trend, a manifestation of ongoing acceleration processes. It was revealed that in modern children, physiological growth jumps in comparison with their peers in 1884, 1930, and 1999 occur earlier - in the prepubertal period.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: to analyze the differences in the normative (reference) values of the body length indicators of children and adolescents living in four ecological and geographical zones of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Statistical data processing was carried out on 24,123 schoolchildren who do not have chronic diseases belonging to health groups I and II. Statistical, analytical, mathematical and sociological methods were used. RESULTS: Among boys, the highest level of statistically significant differences in body length was observed in the age groups of 12, 13 and 15-17 years, among girls - in the age groups of 13, 14 and 16 years. Higher reference values of body length indicators for boys and girls living in the industrial regions of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), lower - for those living in the Arctic zone of the Far North and rural areas of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), where the population is represented mainly by the indigenous peoples of the Far North.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: to analyze the differences in the normative (reference) values of the body weight indicators of children and adolescents living in four ecological and geographical zones of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Statistical data processing was carried out on 24,123 schoolchildren who do not have chronic diseases belonging to health groups I and II. Statistical, analytical, mathematical and sociological methods were used. RESULTS: The analysis showed that the greatest differences in this indicator were recorded in groups of children of primary school age, both among boys and girls. The highest values of reference indicators for body weight were determined in the younger age groups of boys and girls living in Yakutsk, and in older age groups - in those living in the industrial regions of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The lowest values of these indicators were determined in children in rural areas of the region.

The objective was to evaluate the anthropometric indicators and dietary intake of toddlers attending private clinics in Guadalajara. In a cross-sectional study, 101 toddlers aged 12 to 24 months were included. They were born full term, had an adequate weight for gestational age, and attended private clinics in Guadalajara. Two 24 h dietary recalls were administered. Anthropometric measurements were taken, and anthropometric indices were estimated. Student's t test or the Mann-Whitney U test, chi-square test, and odds ratio were used for quantitative or qualitative variables. Males had lower Z scores for the weight/age index than females. During the week, energy intake was excessive in males [OR = 5.5 (95% CI 1.4, 20.8)], and cholesterol intake was insufficient in females [OR = 3.03 (95% CI 1.2, 7.1)]. On weekends, energy [OR = 2.5 (95% CI 1.1, 5.7)] and fiber intake [OR = 3.1 (95% CI 1.2, 7.8)] were insufficient in females. Most of the toddlers who attend the private clinics in the upper-middle socioeconomic stratum of the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area had excessive protein intake, excessive consumption of added sugars was frequent, and there was insufficient intake of vitamin D and calcium. Sex was shown to be a factor influencing nutrient intake in these toddlers aged 12-24 months. Males had a Z-score of weight/age lower than females, suggesting nutritional risk.

BACKGROUND: Low values for anthropometric indicators are risk factors for adverse clinical outcomes among patients on hemodialysis. Nonetheless, little is known about the association between the trajectory of anthropometric indicators and prognosis. We examined the association between a one-year change in anthropometric indicators and hospitalization and mortality in patients undergoing hemodialysis. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study collected data on five anthropometric indicators from patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis: body mass index, mid-upper arm circumference, triceps skinfold, mid-arm muscle circumference, and calf circumference. We calculated their trajectories over one year. The outcomes were all-cause death and the number of all-cause hospitalizations. Negative binomial regressions were used to examine these associations. RESULTS: We included 283 patients (mean age, 67.3 years; 60.4% males). During the follow-up period (median, 2.7 years), 30 deaths and 200 hospitalizations occurred. Body mass index (incident rate ratio [IRR]: 0.87; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.85-0.90), mid-upper arm circumference (IRR: 0.94; 95% CI 0.88-0.99), triceps skinfold (IRR: 0.92; 95% CI 0.84-0.99), and mid-arm muscle circumference (IRR: 0.99; 95% CI 0.98-0.99) increases over one year were associated with a lower risk of all-cause hospitalizations and death regardless of their value at any one point in time. However, the calf circumference trajectory was not associated with clinical events (IRR: 0.94; 95% CI 0.83-1.07). CONCLUSIONS: Body mass index, mid-upper arm circumference, triceps skinfold, and mid-arm muscle circumference trajectories were independently associated with clinical events. Routinely assessing these simple measures in clinical practice may provide additional prognostic information for managing patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Introduction: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus tend to have insulin resistance, a condition that is evaluated using expensive methods that are not easily accessible in routine clinical practice. Objective: To determine the anthropometric, clinical, and metabolic parameters that allow for the discrimination of type 2 diabetic patients who have insulin resistance from those who do not. Methods: A cross-sectional analytical observational study was carried out in 92 type 2 diabetic patients. A discriminant analysis was applied using the SPSS statistical package to establish the characteristics that differentiate type 2 diabetic patients with insulin resistance from those without it. Results: Most of the variables analyzed in this study have a statistically significant association with the HOMA-IR. However, only HDL-c, LDL-c, glycemia, BMI, and tobacco exposure time allow for the discrimination of type 2 diabetic patients who have insulin resistance from those who do not, considering the interaction between them. According to the absolute value of the structure matrix, the variable that contributes most to the discriminant model is HDL-c (-0.69). Conclusions: The association between HDL-c, LDL-c, glycemia, BMI, and tobacco exposure time allows for the discrimination of type 2 diabetic patients who have insulin resistance from those who do not. This constitutes a simple model that can be used in routine clinical practice.

Background In India, 44.8% of adolescent girls are under-nourished, while about 8%-13% of girls are overweight. Though several studies have been done regarding the nutritional status of adolescent girls over the years, there have been no significant changes. Also, there are several different anthropometric indicators for nutritional status assessment, due to which there are huge variations in the prevalence of malnutrition across different studies. So the objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of malnutrition using different anthropometric indicators and compare them. Methods A random sample of 426 girls was taken from Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) of the Centre for Community Medicine (CCM), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), and a semi-structured questionnaire was administered among 386 of them to determine associated factors. Height, weight, and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) were measured for 386 girls, and BMI for age and height for age z scores were calculated using WHO AnthroPlus. Mid-upper arm circumference for age z scores (MUAC for age) were calculated using Lambda-Mu-Sigma (LMS) charts by the CDC for girls aged one year to 20 years. Results It was found in this study that using BMI for age z scores (BAZ), 33.4% of the adolescent girls were malnourished; 18.9% (95% CI 15.1-23.2) being underweight, 10.6% (95% CI: 7.7-14.1) being overweight, and 3.9% (95% CI: 2.2-6.3) were obese. While using BMI solely as an indicator, the prevalence of thinness was 51.8% (95% CI: 46.9-56.9), while that of overweight and obesity was 10.6% (95% CI: 5.7-11.5) and 1.0% (95% CI: 0.2-2.6), respectively. The prevalence of under-nutrition by MUAC for age z scores was 53.4% (95% CI: 48.2-58.4), and that of over-nutrition was 1.8% (95% CI: 1.0-3.7). BMI for age z scores positively and strongly correlated with both MUAC and MUAC for age z scores and had a significant association with both on univariable linear regression. Though there was a negative correlation between BMI for age z scores and height-for-age z scores, it was not significant. Height-for-age z scores, even though positively correlated with MUAC for age z scores, the correlation was not that strong.

Background: This study was designed to analyze the relationship of waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), relative fat mass (RFM), lipid accumulation product (LAP) and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the community-dwelling population of southern China and to explore the independent contribution of socio-demographic characteristics, number of chronic diseases and anthropometric indicators to HRQoL in that population. Methods: This community-based cross-sectional survey studied 2,663 adults aged 18 years and older. HRQoL was assessed by the 3-level EuroQol 5-dimensional scale (EQ-5D-3L), and HRQoL were calculated using the Chinese EQ-5D-3L value set. The outcome variable was the EQ-5D-3L score (HRQoL). Cluster regression was used to analyse the independent contribution of each obesity indicator to HRQoL. Results: A total of 2,663 people participated in this study, and their mean EQ-5D-3L score was 0.938 ± 0.072. In this study, according to the results of the one-way ANOVA, HRQoL was significantly different between the groups of WHtR, WHR, RFM and LAP, respectively. The independent contributions of socio-demographic factors, number of chronic diseases and anthropometric measures to HRQoL in the whole population accounted for 76.2, 7.9, and 15.9% of the total effect, respectively. Conclusion: RFM and LAP were found to have a previously unreported negative impact on HRQoL in a community-dwelling population. In future studies, RFM and LAP could be used as new indicators of obesity to predict quality of life in humans.

Resumo Objetivou-se investigar a relação entre a maturação sexual com indicadores antropométricos e pressóricos de adolescentes. Estudo transversal de base populacional, realizado entre 2018 e 2020, com 345 adolescentes de 10 a 19 anos. Coletou-se variáveis sociodemográficas e antropométricas, pressão arterial e maturação sexual. A análise dos dados foi feita por meio da Análise de Componentes Principais, que gerou três componentes e, posteriormente, testou-se a correlação entre a maturação sexual e os componentes gerados. A maioria dos adolescentes eram do sexo feminino (53%), normotensos (66,1%) e com peso normal (73%). Houve correlação positiva entre o desenvolvimento das mamas com o componente 1 e o componente 2, e correlação negativa entre mamas e o componente 3. Nos meninos, o desenvolvimento dos genitais e pelos pubianos estiveram positivamente correlacionados com o componente 2 e inversamente correlacionados com o componente 3. Conclui-se que existe relação entre a maturação sexual e os indicadores antropométricos e pressóricos, sendo variáveis representativas de risco cardiovascular em adolescentes, mesmo que não em sua totalidade.


Abstract This study aimed to investigate the relationship between sexual maturation and anthropometric and blood pressure indicators in teenagers. This was a population-based cross-sectional study, conducted with 345 teenagers, aged 10 to 19 years, between 2018 and 2020. In this study, data referent to sociodemographic and anthropometric variables, blood pressure, and sexual maturation were collected. The data analysis was performed by applying the Principle Component Analysis (PCA), which generated three components and then tested the correlation between sexual maturation and the generated components. Most of the teenagers were female (53%), normotensive (66.1%), and with a normal weight (73%). A positive correlation was found between breast development and component 1 and component 2, as well as a negative correlation between the breasts and component 3. In the boys, the development of genitals and pubic hair was positively correlated with component 2 and inversely correlated with component 3. It could therefore be concluded that there is a relationship between sexual maturation and the anthropometric and blood pressure indicators, which proved to be representative variables for cardiovascular risk in teenagers, even if not in their entirety.

Background: Anthropometric indicators of obesity have been associated with blood pressure in adolescents. However, the accuracy of anthropometric indicators of obesity for screening for high blood pressure (HBP) in adolescents is not known. Thus, the aim of the present study was to summarize the set of evidence regarding the predictive ability of anthropometric indicators of obesity to identify HBP in adolescents. Methods: Searches were performed in five databases: MEDLINE, Web of Knowledge, Scopus, Scientific Electronic online (SciELO) and SportDiscus. The inclusion criteria for studies were: adolescents aged 10-19 years or mean age included in this range, observational and intervention studies, studies that proposed cutoff points for anthropometric indicators of obesity, and studies in English, Portuguese and Spanish. The methodological quality of studies was assessed using the QUADAS-2 instrument. Results: Ten studies met the inclusion criteria and had their information summarized. Based on the information described in these studies, the anthropometric indicators body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-to-height-ratio (WHtR), triceps skinfold thickness, body adiposity index, C index, body mass, waist-to-arm span ratio, arm fat area, average arm perimeter, fat percentage and arm span were likely to be used in high blood pressure (HBP) screening among adolescents. However, only one study showed acceptable values (moderate to high precision) in relation to the accuracy measurements of described cutoffs. Conclusion: Caution is suggested in the use of anthropometric indicators of obesity for HBP screening in adolescents, in which a greater number of studies with accurate diagnostic tools are necessary.

The growing prevalence of overweight and obesity is an urgent problem not only in adults but also in children in both developed and developing countries. The purpose of this study was to analyze the prevalence of overweight and obesity and other forms of nutritional disorders in Russian children. Material and methods. The nutritional status of 17 329 children aged 2-18 years was assessed on the basis of anthropometric data, obtained by the Federal State Statistics Service during the "Sample Survey of the Population's Diet" in 2018. The prevalence of various forms of malnutrition was assessed by the Z-score categories: underweight, stunted growth (short stature), thinness, overweight, obesity. Results. Population mean and median values of Z-scores in all sex-age groups do not exceed ±0.5 in relation to WHO standards, which indicates the applicability of the standards to assessing the nutritional status of Russian children population. High body weight (WAZ>2) occurs in 7.6% of children, underweight in 2.6%. The incidence of short stature in boys and girls is 7.0 and 6.8%, respectively. The prevalence of overweight and obesity in boys is 20.4 and 10.4%, respectively, while in girls, 15.4 and 7.6%. In general, in the population of children 2-18 years old, the prevalence of overweight is 18%, and obesity is 9.1%. The index of malnutrition, including the sum of the frequency of various combinations of low Z-scores (<-2), characterizing underweight, short stature, thinness, and their combinations was 8.0%. The multilevel logistic regression showed that overweight and obesity inversely depend on age; the risk of developing these conditions is lower in the city, but higher in male children compared to female children. Conclusion. The population of children 2-18 years old in the Russian Federation is characterized by a low incidence of forms of malnutrition, such as underweight and thinness. However, the prevalence of overweight and obesity is higher than in European countries.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of obesity and diabetes is rising. The aim of this study was to determine the association of body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the elderly and to compare the discriminatory abilities of BMI, WC and other anthropometric indicators, including waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body adiposity estimator (BAE) and body roundness index (BRI) for T2DM. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 69,388 subjects aged ≥ 60 years living in Xinzheng, Henan Province, from January to December 2020. The data came from the residents' electronic health records of the Xinzheng Hospital Information System. Logistic regression was used to examine the relationships. Fully adjusted models adjusted for age, sex, place of residence, alcohol consumption, smoking, physical exercise, SBP and RHR. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) was used to compare the discriminatory ability of different anthropometric indicators for T2DM under the influence of potential risk factors. RESULTS: After adjusting for multiple covariates, compared with the first BMI quintile, the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) from the second to fifth quintile for T2DM were 1.416 (1.335-1.502), 1.664 (1.570-1.764), 1.879 (1.774-1.990) and 2.156 (2.037-2.283), respectively. Compared with the first WC quintile, the ORs and 95% CIs from the second to fifth quintiles for T2DM were 1.322 (1.244-1.404), 1.549 (1.459-1.643), 1.705 (1.609-1.807) and 2.169 (2.048-2.297), respectively. Among men, compared with other anthropometric indicators (BMI, WHtR, BAE and BRI), WC showed the highest AUC (AUC: 0.629; 95% CI: 0.622-0.636). Among women, the AUCs of BMI (AUC: 0.600; 95% CI: 0.594-0.606), WC (AUC: 0.600; 95% CI: 0.593-0.606) and BAE (AUC: 0.600; 95% CI: 0.594-0.607) were similar, and the AUCs of BMI, WC and BAE were higher than WHtR, BRI. CONCLUSIONS: All anthropometric indicators were positively associated with T2DM. In men, WC with the strongest positive association with T2DM was the best predictor of T2DM. In women, BMI was most strongly associated with T2DM, and the predictive powers of BMI, WC and BAE were similar. After adjusting the potential confounding factors including age, sex, place of residence, alcohol consumption, smoking, physical exercise, SBP and RHR, the effect of these factors was eliminated, the findings were independent of the covariates considered.

Objective: To assess the relationship between five anthropometric indicators, which includes body mass index (BMI), weight-to-height ratio (WHtR), a body shape index (ABSI), ABSI-adolescents, and body roundness index (BRI) in Chinese children and adolescents, and select which could better predict cardio-metabolic risk factors (CMRFs). Methods: Cross-sectional study with 1,587 participants aged 3 to 17 years. Five anthropometric indicators were calculated according to weight, height and waist circumference (WC). Anthropometric measurements and laboratory indicators were used to diagnose CMRFs, which included hypertension, dyslipidemia, impaired fasting glucose and abdominal obesity. Partial correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationship among anthropometric indicators, area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUCs) were used to compare the predict ability of each anthropometric indicators, the cut-off value, sensitivity, specificity and Youden Index of each indicator were calculated. Results: In 3-6 years old children, ABSI-adolescent positively correlated with WC (r=0.727, P<0.001), BMI (r=0.218, P<0.001) and WHtR (r=0.752, P<0.001), and in 7-17 years old participants, the correlation coefficients increased to 0.842, 0.563 and 0.850 (P<0.001), respectively. BRI were strong correlated with BMI, WHtR and ABSI-adolescents in both age group (P<0.001). In 3-6 years group, the ROC analysis showed that BMI and ABSI were significantly better in identifying hypertension in both genders, WHtR and BRI were significantly better in identifying abdominal obesity in girls, but all of them were failed in identifying dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia. In 7-17 years group, WHtR and BRI were significantly better in identifying hypertension, dyslipidemia, abdominal obesity in both genders, BMI and ABSI performed better in identifying hyperglycemia in girls. Conclusions: In Chinese children aged 3-6 years, there is no indicator performed best in all the CMRFs, in 7-17 years old teenagers, WHtR and BRI can be recommended to identify hypertension, dyslipidemia, abdominal obesity and clustered CMRFs in both genders. However, ABSI showed weak discriminative power.
