RESUMO

This work describes the evaluation the potentiating activity of antibiotics by campesterol (1) and its derivatives (2-11) against multiresistant strains of Staphylococcusaureus 10, Escherichia coli 06 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa 24 employing the microdilution test. When subjected to the in vitro potentiating activity bioassay, all compounds showed a potentiating effect associated with norfloxacin against E. coli and P. aeruginosa with a reduction in the MIC of the antibiotic of up to 75%. These compounds also reduced the MIC of gentamicin by 37% to 87% in S. aureus and E. coli. Additionally, molecular docking studies were conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the interactions between the appropriate proteins and the most effective compounds (2, 4, 9, and 10 against E. coli; 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, and 9 against S. aureus), including antibiotics. This paper registers for the first time the in vitro and in silico studies on the action of compounds 1-11 in antibiotic potentiation.

The main objective of this study was to determine plasma levels of PS and to study SNVs rs41360247, rs4245791, rs4148217, and rs11887534 of ABCG8 and the r657152 SNV at the ABO blood group locus in a sample of a population treated at our hospital, and to determine whether these SNVs are related to plasma PS concentrations. The secondary objective was to establish the variables associated with plasma PS concentrations in adults. Participants completed a dietary habit questionnaire and a blood sample was collected to obtain the following variables: campesterol, sitosterol, sitostanol, lanosterol, stigmasterol, biochemical parameters, and the SNVs. In addition, biometric and demographic variables were also recorded. In the generalized linear model, cholesterol and age were positively associated with total PS levels, while BMI was negatively related. For rs4245791, homozygous T allele individuals showed a significantly lower campesterol concentration compared with C homozygotes, and the GG alleles of rs657152 had the lowest levels of campesterol compared with the other alleles of the SNV. Conclusions: The screening of certain SNVs could help prevent the increase in plasma PS and maybe PNALD in some patients. However, further studies on the determinants of plasma phytosterol concentrations are needed.

The aim of the current study was to synthesize silver nanoparticles (PLSNPs) using green technology by means of phytosterol-enriched fractions fromBlumea laceraextracts (EAF) and evaluate their toxicological and anti-haemorrhoidal potential. The average size of the synthesized particles was found to be 85.64 nm by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Energy dispersive spectroscopy showed the elemental composition of PLSNPs to be 12.59% carbon and 87.41% silver, indicating the capping of phytochemicals on the PLSNPs. The PLSNPs were also standardized for total phytosterol content using chemical methods and high-perfromance liquid chromatography. The PLSNPs were found to be safe up to 1000 mg kg-1as no toxicity was observed in the acute and sub-acute toxicity studies performed as per OECD guidelines. After the induction of haemorrhoids, experimental animals were treated with different doses of EAF, PLSNPs and a standard drug (Pilex) for 7 d, and on the eighth day the ameliorative potential was assessed by evaluating the haemorrhoidal (inflammatory severity index, recto-anal coefficient) and biochemical (tumour necrosis factor-alpha and interleukin-6) parameters and histology of the recto-anal tissue. The results showed that treatment with PLSNPs and Pilex significantly (p< 0.05) reduced haemorrhoidal and biochemical parameters. This was further supported by restoration of altered antioxidant status. Further, a marked reduction in the inflammatory zones along with minimal dilated blood vessels was observed in the histopathological study. The results of molecular docking studies also confirmed the amelioration of haemorrhoids via AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-mediated reduction of inflammation and endothelin B receptor modification by PLSNPs. In conclusion, PLSNPs could be a good alternative for the management of haemorrhoids.

The causal relationships between plasma metabolites and cholelithiasis/cholecystitis risks remain elusive. Using two-sample Mendelian randomization, we found that genetic proxied plasma campesterol level showed negative correlation with the risk of both cholelithiasis and cholecystitis. Furthermore, the increased risk of cholelithiasis is correlating with the increased level of plasma campesterol. Lastly, genetic colocalization study showed that the leading SNP, rs4299376, which residing at the ABCG5/ABCG8 gene loci, was shared by plasma campesterol level and cholelithiasis, indicating that the aberrant transportation of plant sterol/cholesterol from the blood stream to the bile duct/gut lumen might be the key in preventing cholesterol gallstone formation.

MAIN CONCLUSION: Overexpression of the rice gene, OsFes1A, increased phytosterol content and drought and salt stress tolerance in Arabidopsis. Phytosterols are key components of the phospholipid bilayer membrane and regulate various processes of plant growth and response to biotic and abiotic stresses. In this study, it was demonstrated that the overexpression of OsFes1A (Hsp70 nucleotide exchange factor Fes1) increased phytosterols content and enhanced tolerance to salt and drought stress in Arabidopsis. In transgenic plants, the average content of campesterol was 17.6% higher than that of WT, and the average content of ß-sitosterol reached 923.75 µg/g, with an increase of 1.33-fold. In fes1a seeds, the contents of campesterol and ß-sitosterol reduced by 20% and 10.93%, respectively. In OsFes1A transgenic seeds, the contents of campesterol and ß-sitosterol increased by 1.38-fold and 1.25-fold respectively. Furthermore, the germination rate of transgenic Arabidopsis was significantly higher than WT under stress (salt, ABA, and drought treatment). Under salt stress, transgenic plants accumulated a lower MDA content, higher chlorophyll content, and POD activity relative to the wild type, while the mutants showed the opposite pattern Our study found multiple other functions of OsFes1A beyond the defined role of Fes1 in regulating Hsp70, contributing to the better understanding of the essential roles of Fes1 in plants. Meanwhile, it provides the theoretical basis for developing high phytosterol crop varieties.

Campesterol is a kind of important functional food additive. Therefore, stable and efficient campesterol biosynthesis is significant. Herein, we first knocked out the sterol 22-desaturase gene in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and expressed sterol Δ7-reductase from Pangasianodon hypophthalmus, obtaining a strain that produced 6.6 mg/L campesterol. Then, the modular expression of campesterol synthesis enzymes was performed, and a campesterol titer of 88.3 mg/L was achieved. Because campesterol is a lipid-soluble macromolecule, we promoted lipid droplet formation by exploring regulatory factors, and campesterol production was improved to 169.20 mg/L. Next, triacylglycerol lipase was used to achieve compartment campesterol synthesis. After enhancing the expression of sterol Δ7-reductase and screening cations, the campesterol titer reached 438.28 mg/L in a shake flask and 1.44 g/L in a 5 L bioreactor, which represents the highest campesterol titer reported to date. Metabolic regulation combined with lipid droplet engineering may be useful for the synthesis of other steroids as well.

BACKGROUND: Phytosterols are structurally similar to cholesterol and partially inhibit intestinal absorption of cholesterol, although their impact on coronary artery disease (CAD) risk remains to be elucidated. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to prospectively assess the associations between total and individual phytosterol intake and CAD risk in United States health professionals. METHODS: The analysis included 213,992 participants from 3 prospective cohorts-the Nurses' Health Study (NHS), NHSII, and Health Professionals Follow-Up Study-without cardiovascular disease or cancer at baseline. Diet was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire every 2-4 y since baseline. Associations between phytosterol intake and the risk of CAD, such as nonfatal myocardial infarction and fatal CAD, were evaluated using Cox proportional hazards regression models. RESULTS: More than 5,517,993 person-years, 8725 cases with CAD were documented. Comparing extreme quintiles, pooled hazard ratios (95% CIs) of CAD were 0.93 (0.86, 1.01; P-trend = 0.16) for total phytosterols, 0.89 (0.82, 0.96; P-trend = 0.05) for campesterol, 0.95 (0.88, 1.02; P-trend = 0.10) for stigmasterol, and 0.92 (0.85, 1.00; P-trend = 0.09) for ß-sitosterol. Nonlinear associations were observed for total phytosterols, campesterol, and ß-sitosterol: the risk reduction plateaued at intakes above ∼180, 30, and 130 mg/d, respectively (P-nonlinearity < 0.001). In a subset of participants (N range between 11,983 and 22,039), phytosterol intake was inversely associated with plasma concentrations of total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and IL-6 and positively associated with adiponectin, whereas no significant associations were observed for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol or C-reactive protein concentrations. CONCLUSIONS: Higher long-term intake of total and major subtypes of phytosterols may be associated with a modest reduction in CAD risk, displaying a nonlinear relationship that plateau at moderate intake levels. The role of phytosterols in preventing CAD warrants further investigation.

Cyclophosphamide (CYP) is commonly used to treat cancer of the ovaries, breast, lymph, and blood system and produces interstitial cystitis (IC) via its urotoxic metabolite: i. e., acrolein. The present study was aimed to investigate the uroprotective effect of campesterol (a steroidal phytochemical) in cyclophosphamide induced IC. IC was induced by CYP (150 mg/kg, i. p.) in rats. The Enzyme linked immunosorbent assays for oxidative stress markers and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for inflammatory cytokines were carried out. The Tissue Organ Bath Technique was used for the evaluation of the spasmolytic effect of campesterol. Different pharmacological antagonists have been used to explore the mechanism of action of campesterol. Treatment with campesterol (70 mg/kg) reduced nociception (55 %), edema (67 %), hemorrhage (67 %), and protein leakage significantly (94 %). The antioxidant activity of campesterol was exhibited by a fall in MDA, NO, and an elevation in SOD, CAT, and GPX levels. Campesterol presented anti-inflammatory potential by decreasing IL-1, TNF-α, and TGF-ß expression levels. Histologically, it preserved urothelium from the deleterious effect of CYP. Campesterol showed a spasmolytic effect by reducing bladder overactivity that was dependent on muscarinic receptors, voltage-gated calcium and KATP channels, and cyclo-oxygenase pathways. In silico studies confirmed the biochemical findings. The findings suggest that campesterol could be valorized as a possible therapeutic agent against cyclophosphamide-induced interstitial cystitis.

In this study, a suite of efficient CRISPR/Cas9 tools was developed to overcome the genetic manipulation challenges posed by the polyploid genome of industrial yeast Cyberlindnera jadinii. The developed CRISPR/Cas9 system can achieve a 100% single-gene knockdown efficiency in strain NBRC0988. Moreover, the integration of a single exogenous gene into the target locus using a 50 bp homology arm achieved near-100% efficiency. The efficiency of simultaneous integration of three genes into the chromosome is strongly influenced by the length of the homology arm, with the highest integration efficiency of 62.5% obtained when selecting a homology arm of about 500 bp. By utilizing the CRISPR/Cas system, this study demonstrated the potential of C. jadinii in producing heterologous sterols. Through shake-flask fermentation, the engineered strains produced 92.1 and 81.8 mg/L of campesterol and cholesterol, respectively. Furthermore, the production levels of these two sterols were further enhanced through high-cell-density fed-batch fermentation in a 5 L bioreactor. The highest titer of campesterol reached 807 mg/L [biomass OD600 = 294, productivity of 6.73 mg/(L·h)]. The titer of cholesterol reached 1.52 g/L [biomass OD600 = 380, productivity of 9.06 mg/(L·h)], marking the first gram-scale production of steroidal compounds in C. jadinii.

In this study, twelve campesterol derivatives (2-13) were prepared by esterification reaction at the hydroxy group in C-3 and catalytic hydrogenation at the carbon-carbon double bond in C-5(6). All obtained compounds were characterized by IR, 1 H-NMR, 13 C-NMR, and MS spectra. Campesterol (1) and its derivatives (2-13) were evaluated in vitro against Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 6538), Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 0046), Escherichia coli (ATCC 10536), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 15442), and Klebsiella pneumoniae (ATCC 10031) using the microdilution method. Among tested compounds, 4, 6, 9, 11, 12, and 13 displayed the best antibacterial activity. Moreover, to support the antibacterial activity experiments, the investigation of molecular interactions of more active compounds, and also compound 1 and neomycin, used as starting material and positive control, respectively, at the binding site of the target proteins was performed using molecular docking simulations. Four compounds (7, 9, 10 and 11) are herein described for the first time.

The prevalence of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) markedly increases with age. Phytotherapeutic approaches have been developed over time owing to the adverse side effects of conventional medications such as 5-reductase inhibitors and α1-adrenergic receptor antagonists. Therefore, dietary supplements (DS) containing active compounds that benefit BPH are widely available. Phytosterols (PSs) are well recognized for their role in maintaining blood cholesterol levels; however, their potential in BPH treatment remains unexplored. This review aims to provide a general overview of the available data regarding the clinical evidence and a good understanding of the detailed pharmacological roles of PSs-induced activities at a molecular level in BPH. Furthermore, we will explore the authenticity of PSs content in DS used by patients with BPH compared to the current legislation and appropriate analytical methods for tracking DS containing PSs. The results showed that PSs might be a useful pharmacological treatment option for men with mild to moderate BPH, but the lack of standardized extracts linked with the regulation of DS containing PSs and experimental evidence to elucidate the mechanisms of action limit the use of PSs in BPH. Moreover, the results suggest multiple research directions in this field.

Sclareol, a diterpene, has a wide range of physiological effects on plants, such as antimicrobial activity; disease resistance against pathogens; and the expression of genes encoding proteins involved in metabolism, transport, and phytohormone biosynthesis and signaling. Exogenous sclareol reduces the content of chlorophyll in Arabidopsis leaves. However, the endogenous compounds responsible for sclareol-induced chlorophyll reduction remain unknown. The phytosterols campesterol and stigmasterol were identified as compounds that reduce the content of chlorophyll in sclareol-treated Arabidopsis plants. The exogenous application of campesterol or stigmasterol dose-dependently reduced the content of chlorophyll in Arabidopsis leaves. Exogenously-applied sclareol enhanced the endogenous contents of campesterol and stigmasterol and the accumulation of transcripts for phytosterol biosynthetic genes. These results suggest that the phytosterols campesterol and stigmasterol, the production of which is enhanced in response to sclareol, contribute to reductions in chlorophyll content in Arabidopsis leaves.

Campesterol is a major phytosterol that plays important roles in regulating membrane properties and serves as the precursor to multiple specialized metabolites, such as the phytohormone brassinosteroids. Recently, we established a campesterol-producing yeast strain and extended the bioproduction to 22-hydroxycampesterol and 22-hydroxycampest-4-en-3-one, the precursors to brassinolide. However, there is a trade-off in growth due to the disrupted sterol metabolism. In this study, we enhanced the growth of the campesterol-producing yeast by partially restoring the activity of the sterol acyltransferase and engineering upstream FPP supply. Furthermore, genome sequencing analysis also revealed a pool of genes possibly associated with the altered sterol metabolism. Retro engineering implies an essential role of ASG1, especially the C-terminal asparagine-rich domain of ASG1, in the sterol metabolism of yeast especially under stress. The performance of the campesterol-producing yeast strain was enhanced with the titer of campesterol to 18.4 mg/L, and the stationary OD600 was improved by ∼33% compared to the unoptimized strain. In addition, we examined the activity of a plant cytochrome P450 in the engineered strain, which exhibits more than 9-fold higher activity than when expressed in the wild-type yeast strain. Therefore, the engineered campesterol-producing yeast strain also serves as a robust host for the functional expression of plant membrane proteins.

Objectives: Phytosterols obtained from medicinal plants are well known for their anti-diabetic, anti-cardiovascular, anti-cancer, and anti-microbial properties. Strychnos innocua (a member of the Loganiaceae family) grows in several African nations and is frequently used for medicinal purposes. Methods: The chromatographic separation of S. innocua (root bark) ethyl acetate extract resulted in the isolation of campesterol (1) and ß-sitosterol (2). Results: The structures of 1 and 2 were confirmed by mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance (1D and 2D NMR), and literature data. This is a novel report of campesterol and ß-sitosterol from S. innocua. Docking studies revealed that the binding affinities of 1 with the binding sites of Staphylococcus aureus pyruvate carboxylase (PDB: 3HO8) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa virulence factor regulator (PDB: 2OZ6) were -7.8 and -7.9 kcal/mol, respectively. Furthermore, 2 had binding affinities of -7.6 and -7.7 kcal/mol with binding sites of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, respectively, whereas ciprofloxacin (a standard drug) had binding affinities of -6.6 and -8.7 kcal/mol. Conclusion: This study indicated that S. innocua root bark is rich in campesterol and ß-sitosterol. In silico molecular docking demonstrated that the compounds interact well with the binding sites of S. aureus and P. aeruginosa.

AIM: Blood cholesterol absorption and synthesis biomarkers predict cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to determine the values of serum non-cholesterol sterol markers [lathosterol (Latho), campesterol (Campe), and sitosterol (Sito)] in healthy individuals and factors affecting these markers. METHODS: The CACHE Consortium compiled clinical data, including serum Latho (cholesterol synthesis marker), and Campe and Sito (cholesterol absorption markers), by a gas chromatography method in 2944 individuals. Healthy subjects were selected by excluding those with prior cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, familial hypercholesterolemia, sitosterolemia, current smokers, those with low (<17 kg/m2) or high (≥ 30 kg/m2) body mass index (BMI), and those with treatment for dyslipidemia or hyperuricemia. Nonlinear regression stratified by sex was used to examine the associations of cholesterol metabolism markers with age, BMI, and serum lipid levels. RESULTS: Of 479 individuals selected, 59.4% were female; the median age was 48 years in females and 50 years in males. The three markers showed positively skewed distributions, and sex differences were present. Age was associated positively with Latho, inversely with Campe, but not significantly with Sito. BMI was associated positively with Latho, but not significantly with Campe or Sito. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) was positively associated with Campe and Sito, but not significantly with Latho. Non-HDL-C was positively associated with the three markers. CONCLUSION: Our study results in the healthy subjects help to interpret the non-cholesterol sterol markers for cardiovascular risk assessment in patients with cardiovascular risk factors.

Plant sterols are molecules that are structurally similar to cholesterol and provided only as dietary sources (e.g., vegetables, fruits, nuts, cereals) since they cannot be synthesized by humans. Sterol-enriched diets (≥2 g/day) may decrease total and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations by 5-10%, either alone or when added to statins, since they antagonize dietary cholesterol absorption in the intestine. On the other hand, increased serum phytosterol concentrations, (including when associated with sitosterolemia, a rare genetic defect) may contribute to atherosclerotic risk, although a threshold for such a role has not been established. Medications such as ezetimibe may effectively reduce cholesterol and phytosterol absorption. Whether the therapeutic approach associated with the reduction of phytosterol absorption is also translated into a reduction in a patient's residual cardiovascular risk needs to be established.

AIM: Serum levels of cholesterol absorption and synthesis markers are known to be associated with cardiovascular risk. Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a well-known inherited disorder presenting elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and total cholesterol (TC) levels and premature coronary disease. In this study, we aim to examine the differences in terms of serum markers of cholesterol metabolism between FH and non-FH individuals and to examine their associations with serum lipid levels. METHODS: In this study, we utilized data on serum markers of cholesterol metabolism, namely, lathosterol (Latho, synthesis marker), campesterol (Campe, absorption marker), and sitosterol (Sito, absorption marker) measured by gas chromatography of the CACHE consortium, which comprised of 13 research groups in Japan. Clinical data were compiled using REDCap system. Among the 2944 individuals in the CACHE population, we selected individuals without lipid-lowering medications and hemodialysis patients for this CACHE study FH analysis. Multivariable adjustment was performed to assess the associations. RESULTS: In this study, we analyzed data from 51 FH patients and 1924 non-FH individuals. After adjustment for possible confounders, the FH group was shown to have significantly higher Campe and Sito concentrations and insignificantly higher Latho concentrations than the non-FH group. These marker concentrations showed nonlinear associations with TC in the FH group. Campe/Latho and Sito/Latho ratios were significantly higher in the FH group than in the non-FH group. CONCLUSION: FH group had significantly elevated serum Campe and Sito concentrations and insignificantly elevated Latho concentrations; thus, intestinal cholesterol absorption relative to hepatic cholesterol synthesis was suggested to be elevated in patients with FH. Serum Latho, Campe, and Sito concentrations showed nonlinear associations with TC in the FH group.

AIM: Risk of cardiovascular disease is increased in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Cholesterol metabolism (hepatic synthesis and intestinal absorption) is known to be associated with cardiovascular risk. Next, we examined the association of DM with cholesterol absorption/synthesis. METHODS: The CACHE Consortium, which is comprised of 13 research groups in Japan possessing data of lathosterol (Latho, synthesis marker) and campesterol (Campe, absorption marker) measured by gas chromatography, compiled the clinical data using the REDCap system. Among the 3597 records, data from 2944 individuals were used for several analyses including this study. RESULTS: This study analyzed data from eligible 2182 individuals including 830 patients with DM; 42.2% were female, median age was 59 years, and median HbA1c of patients with DM was 7.0%. There was no difference in Latho between DM and non-DM individuals. Campe and Campe/Latho ratio were significantly lower in DM individuals than in non-DM individuals. When the associations of glycemic control markers with these markers were analyzed with multivariable-adjusted regression model using restricted cubic splines, Campe and Campe/Latho ratio showed inverse associations with glucose levels and HbA1c. However, Latho showed an inverted U-shaped association with plasma glucose, whereas Latho showed a U-shaped association with HbA1c. These associations remained even after excluding statin and/or ezetimibe users. CONCLUSION: We demonstrated that DM and hyperglycemia were independent factors for lower cholesterol absorption marker levels regardless of statin/ezetimibe use.

Hypercholesterolemia is a major driver of atherosclerosis, thus contributing to high morbidity and mortality worldwide. Gut microbiota have been identified as modulator of blood lipids including cholesterol levels. Few studies have already linked certain bacteria and microbial mechanisms to host cholesterol. However, in particular mouse models revealed conflicting results depending on genetics and experimental protocol. To gain further insights into the relationship between intestinal bacteria and host cholesterol metabolism, we first performed fecal 16S rRNA targeted metagenomic sequencing in a human cohort (n = 24) naïve for cholesterol lowering drugs. Here, we show alterations in the gut microbiota composition of hypercholesterolemic patients with depletion of Bifidobacteria, expansion of Clostridia and increased Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio. To test whether pharmacological intervention in gut microbiota impacts host serum levels of cholesterol, we treated hypercholesterolemic Apolipoprotein E knockout with oral largely non-absorbable antibiotics. Antibiotics increased serum cholesterol, but only when mice were fed normal chow diet and cholesterol was measured in the random fed state. These elevations in cholesterol already occurred few days after treatment initiation and were reversible after stopping antibiotics with re-acquisition of intestinal bacteria. Gene expression analyses pointed to increased intestinal cholesterol uptake mediated by antibiotics in the fed state. Non-targeted serum metabolomics suggested that diminished plant sterol levels and reduced bile acid cycling were involved microbial mechanisms. In conclusion, our work further enlightens the link between gut microbiota and host cholesterol metabolism. Pharmacological disruption of the gut flora by antibiotics was able to exacerbate serum cholesterol and may impact cardiovascular disease.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Rubus idaeus Linnaeus (RI) is a Chinese herbal medicine that has been widely used in China for a long time to reinforce the kidney, nourish the liver, improve vision, and arrest polyuria. AIM OF THE STUDY: This work aims to evaluate the recent progress of the chemical composition, pharmacological activity, pharmacokinetics, metabolism, and quality control and of Rubus idaeus, which focuses on the insufficiency of existing research and will shed light on future studies of Rubus idaeus. METHODS: Literatures about "Rubus idaeus","Red raspberry" and "Fupenzi"are retrieved by browsing the database, such as Web of Science (http://www.webofknowledge.com/wos), Pubmed (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/), CNKI (http://www.cnki.net/), and Wanfang Data (http://www.wanfangdata.com.cn). In addition, related textbooks and digital documents are interrogated to provide a holistic and critical review of the topic. The period of the literature covered from 1981 to 2022. RESULTS: Approximately 194 compounds have been isolated from Rubus idaeus, which is rich in phenols, terpenoids, alkaloids, steroids, and fatty acids. Numerous investigations have demonstrated that Rubus idaeus exhibits many pharmacological activities, including hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic, anti-Alzheimer effect, anti-osteoporosis, hepatoprotective, anti-cancer, neuroprotective, anti-bacteria and skin care, etc. However, it is worth noting that most of the research is not associated with the conventional effect, such as reducing urination and treating opacity of the cornea. CONCLUSION: The effectiveness of Rubus idaeus has been proved by its long-term clinical application. The research on the pharmacological activity of Rubus idaeus has flourished. In many pharmacological experiments, only the high-dose group can achieve the corresponding efficacy, so the efficacy of Rubus idaeus needs to be further interrogated. Meanwhile, the relationship between pharmacological activity and specific compounds of Rubus idaeus has not been clarified yet. Last but not least, studies involving toxicology and pharmacokinetics are very limited. Knowledge of bioavailability and toxicological behavior of Rubus idaeus can help understand the herb's pharmacodynamic and safety profile.
