RESUMO

Temporary anchorage devices (TADs) are frequently applied to different anatomic areas with different protocols to increase skeletal effects and anchorage in orthodontic treatment planning. It has been reported in many literatures that primary stability for orthodontic TADs is significant for long-term survival rate. For this reason, different areas of the palatal region, which has many indications, have been widely used in the studies. In this evaluation where bone quality and thickness are important, density, bone thickness, and fractal dimension (FD) on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) will provide more predictable clinical results. The aim of this study was to evaluate bone thickness, density, and FD in the palatal region of the first, and second premolars, and first molars. There was a remarkable difference (p < 0.05) between the parameters of FD, thickness and density of bone in the identified areas in the palatal region. In terms of thickness and FD, the 1st premolar region had significantly higher values than the other regions (p < 0.05). In terms of density, the values in the right 1st molar and right 1st premolar regions were significantly higher (p < 0.05). The 1st premolar region is an ideal site for placement of palatal TADs. CBCT-assisted preliminary evaluation of FD value, bone density, and thickness may increase clinical success when selecting the location of TADs to be applied to the palatal bone.

RESUMO

Prevention of intestinal fibrosis remains an unresolved problem in the treatment of Crohn's disease (CD), as specific antifibrotic therapies are not yet available. Appropriate analysis of fibrosis severity is essential for assessing the therapeutic efficacy of potential antifibrotic drugs. The aim of this study was to develop an observer-independent method to quantify intestinal fibrosis in surgical specimens from patients with CD using structural analysis of the extracellular matrix (ECM). We performed fractal analysis in fibrotic and control histological sections of patients with surgery for CD (n = 28). To specifically assess the structure of the collagen matrix, polarized light microscopy was used. A score to quantify collagen fiber alignment and the color of the polarized light was established. Fractal dimension as a measure for the structural complexity correlated significantly with the histological fibrosis score whereas lacunarity as a measure for the compactness of the ECM showed a negative correlation. Polarized light microscopy to visualize the collagen network underlined the structural changes in the ECM network in advanced fibrosis. In conclusion, observer-independent quantification of the structural complexity of the ECM by fractal analysis is a suitable method to quantify the degree of intestinal fibrosis in histological samples from patients with CD.

RESUMO

Chemical composition and physical parameters of the implant surface, such as roughness, regulate the cellular response leading to implant bone osseointegration. Possible implant surface modifications include anodization or the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) treatment process that produces a thick and dense oxide coating superior to normal anodic oxidation. Experimental modifications with Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) titanium and titanium alloy Ti6Al4V plates and PEO additionally treated with low-pressure oxygen plasma (PEO-S) were used in this study to evaluate their physical and chemical properties. Cytotoxicity of experimental titanium samples as well as cell adhesion to their surface were assessed using normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) or L929 cell line. Moreover, the surface roughness, fractal dimension analysis, and texture analysis were calculated. Samples after surface treatment have substantially improved properties compared to the reference SLA (sandblasted and acid-etched) surface. The surface roughness (Sa) was 0.59-2.38 µm, and none of the tested surfaces had cytotoxic effect on NHDF and L929 cell lines. A greater cell growth of NHDF was observed on the tested PEO and PEO-S samples compared to reference SLA sample titanium.

RESUMO

AIM: It was aimed to evaluate the bone microarchitecture of children with FMF in the city of Tokat, where the disease is highly prevalent, in Turkey, one of the countries where familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) disease is the most common, using mandibular indexes and fractal dimension analysis on panoramic radiography. METHODS: In this retrospective study, the results were evaluated and compared using the mandibular cortical index (MCI), the mental index (MI), the panoramic mandibular index (PMI), and the fractal dimension analysis of six different regions (condyle, angulus, and interdental) on dental panoramic radiographs in 124 children with FMF and 124 healthy children. The data were analyzed using the IBM SPSS V23. RESULTS: The distribution of MCI in children with FMF was similar to the control group (p > 0.05). The mean MI (3.59) values in FMF patients were statistically higher than the control group (p = 0.016). No statistically significant difference was found in PMI between the patients with FMF and the control group (p > 0.05). No statistically significant difference was found between the mean fractal dimension (FD) values according to the groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Trabecular bone microarchitecture of children with FMF is similar to healthy children. There is no correlation between the duration of colchicine use and bone microarchitecture.

RESUMO

Orthodontic removable appliances made of transparent thermoplastic materials-aligners-are becoming increasingly popular in contemporary orthodontic practice. It is important for the clinician to fully understand the mechanical properties and behavior of the appliance used. Because of that, the aim of our study was to investigate the changes in aligner surface after immersion in Coca-Cola and orange juice. For surface evaluation, fractal analysis, texture analysis, and wetting angle measurement were performed. Statistically significant changes were found between some of the groups in the fractal dimension analysis. In texture analysis, all but one intergroup comparison showed statistically significant differences. For wetting angle assessment, statistically significant differences were found. These were, however, more numerous when assessing glycol droplets, rather than water droplets. Fractal dimension analysis confirmed a correlation between the intensity of changes in the aligner surface with immersion time in the liquids assessed. Texture analysis showed a high sensitivity to the changes in aligner surface. It failed, however, to reveal changes relative to immersion time. Wetting angle analysis revealed aligner surface degradation for Coca-Cola. It did not, however, prove the dependence of the intensity of this degradation as a function of time. Both Coca-Cola and orange juice can cause aligner surface degradation.

RESUMO

Clinical diagnosis of pigmented lesions can be a challenge in everyday practice. Benign and dysplastic nevi and melanomas may have similar clinical presentations, but completely different prognoses. Fractal dimensions of shape and texture can describe the complexity of the pigmented lesion structure. This study aims to apply fractal dimension analysis to differentiate melanomas, dysplastic nevi, and benign nevi in polarized and non-polarized light. A total of 87 Eighty-four patients with 97 lesions were included in this study. All examined lesions were photographed under polarized and non-polarized light, surgically removed, and examined by a histopathologist to establish the correct diagnosis. The obtained images were then processed and analyzed. Area, perimeter, and fractal dimensions of shape and texture were calculated for all the lesions under polarized and non-polarized light. The fractal dimension of shape in polarized light enables differentiating melanomas, dysplastic nevi, and benign nevi. It also makes it possible to distinguish melanomas from benign and dysplastic nevi under non-polarized light. The fractal dimension of texture allows distinguishing melanomas from benign and dysplastic nevi under polarized light. All examined parameters of shape and texture can be used for developing an automatic computer-aided diagnosis system. Polarized light is superior to non-polarized light for imaging texture details.

RESUMO

Laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) are the sub-wavelength periodic nanostructures generated by the femtosecond laser. Implant topography and its nanostructural changes can be important for biomedical applications. In order to compare the surface topography of different implants, appropriate mathematical and physical descriptive methods should be provided. The aim of the study was to evaluate the experimental LIPSS-based-Low Spatial Frequency LIPSS (LSFL) dental implant surfaces. Novel methods of surface analysis, such as Fractal Dimension Analysis and Texture Analysis, were compared to the standard surface roughness evaluation. Secondary, cell viability, and attachment tests were applied in order to evaluate the biological properties of the new titanium surface and to compare their correlation with the physical properties of the new surfaces. A Normal Human Dermal Fibroblast (NHDF) cytotoxicity test did not show an impact on the vitality of the cells. Our study has shown that the laser LIPSS implant surface modifications significantly improved the cell adhesion to the tested surfaces. We observed a strong correlation of adhesion and the growth of cells on the tested surface, with an increase in implant surface roughness with the best results for the moderately rough (2 µm) surfaces. Texture and fractal dimension analyses are promising methods to evaluate dental implants with complex geometry.

RESUMO

The surface topography of orthodontic brackets can have a significant impact on both the effectiveness of the therapy and the behavior of these elements in the oral cavity environment. In this situation, striving to obtain the most uniform, smooth surface in a repeatable manner for each manufactured element should be a sine qua non condition for each supplier of orthodontic brackets. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the surfaces of orthodontic brackets using different methods. One of them-that is relatively simple and repeatable-is the analysis of the fractal dimension and the analysis of the textures of the optical images on the surface. In the presented study, fractal dimension analysis and texture analysis were performed by selecting four brackets from three different manufacturers (Mini Sprint, Sprint, Nu-Edge, Orthos SS). The area of each bracket slot was analyzed at six predefined points. The smoothest and most uniform and reproducible surface structure was shown by the Mini Sprint bracket. On the other hand, Sprint brackets showed the least homogeneous and least repeatable surface structure.

RESUMO

Biocompatibility is defined as "the ability of a biomaterial, prosthesis, or medical device to perform with an appropriate host response in a specific application". Biocompatibility is especially important for restorative dentists as they use materials that remain in close contact with living tissues for a long time. The research material involves six types of cement used frequently in the subgingival region: Ketac Fil Plus (3M ESPE, Germany), Riva Self Cure (SDI, Australia) (Glass Ionomer Cements), Breeze (Pentron Clinical, USA) (Resin-based Cement), Adhesor Carbofine (Pentron, Czech Republic), Harvard Polycarboxylat Cement (Harvard Dental, Great Britain) (Zinc polycarboxylate types of cement) and Agatos S (Chema-Elektromet, Poland) (Zinc Phosphate Cement). Texture and fractal dimension analysis was applied. An evaluation of cytotoxicity and cell adhesion was carried out. The fractal dimension of Breeze (Pentron Clinical, USA) differed in each of the tested types of cement. Adhesor Carbofine (Pentron, Czech Republic) cytotoxicity was rated 4 on a 0-4 scale. The Ketac Fil Plus (3M ESPE, Germany) and Riva Self Cure (SDI, Australia) cements showed the most favorable conditions for the adhesion of fibroblasts, despite statistically significant differences in the fractal dimension of their surfaces.

RESUMO

Thanks to the continuous development of light-curing resin composites it is now possible to print permanent single-tooth restorations. The purpose of this study was to compare resin composites for milling -Gandio Blocks (GR), Brilliant Crios (CR) and Enamic (EN) with resin composite for 3D printing-Varseo Smile Crown plus (VSC). Three-point bending was used to measure flexural strength (σf) and flexural modulus (Ef). The microhardness was measured using a Vickers method, while fractographic, microstructural, texture and fractal dimension (FD) analyses were performed using SEM, optical microscope and picture analysis methods. The values of σf ranged from 118.96 (±2.81) MPa for EN to 186.02 (±10.49) MPa for GR, and the values of Ef ranged from 4.37 (±0.8) GPa for VSC to 28.55 (±0.34) GPa for EN. HV01 ranged from 25.8 (±0.7) for VSC to 273.42 (±27.11) for EN. The filler content ranged from 19-24 vol. % for VSC to 70-80 vol. % for GR and EN. The observed fractures are typical for brittle materials. The correlation between FD of materials microstructure and Ef was observed. σf of the printed resin depends on layers orientation and is significantly lower than σf of GR and CR. Ef of the printed material is significantly lower than Ef of blocks for milling.

RESUMO

Venous lake (VL) is a common lesion resulting from the enlargement of thin-walled veins surrounded by a thick wall of fibrous tissue. Photocoagulation is becoming one of the basic methods for treating small vascular lesions. The aim of this study was an application of texture analysis (TA) and fractal dimension analysis (FDA) to evaluate VL treatment. Twenty-three VLs were included in the study. We used a 980 nm diode laser, 6 W, 100 ms pulse mode with a 50% duty cycle. The total dose of energy was in a range from 80 J to 600 J. We used the difference of intensity algorithm for FDA and microcontrast and a co-occurrence matrix for TA. A complete therapeutic effect was achieved in 83%, and in 9%, scar formation was observed after three months. No healing was observed in 4%, and there was partial healing in 4%. No differences in FD were observed between the lesions after three months and the healthy mucosa. The fractal dimension and microcontrast of a vascular lesion are mutually coupled. FDA and TA is a useful and objective method of assessing treatment effects for venous lakes. The non-contact mode of the 980 nm diode laser is an effective and safe method for treating a VL.

RESUMO

Mechanical properties of orthodontic wires can have a very significant impact both on the resistance of the entire appliance to the oral cavity conditions and directly on the effectiveness of the therapy. Striving to achieve repeatability of mechanical characteristics of orthodontic wires of a given type should be an obligatory condition in their production. To achieve it, these components should be thoroughly analyzed using various mechanical tests. Twenty-four steel and nickel-titanium orthodontic wires from four different manufacturers were examined. Each wire was subjected to fractal dimension analysis and texture analysis. The two sides of each wire were compared against each other, as well as in terms of variation in the surface area for each wire type made by different manufacturers. Most wires showed significant variation in fractal dimension and texture, both when comparing two sides of the same wire and between individual wires of a given type made by a single manufacturer. When conducting research and clinically using orthodontic wires made of Ni-Ti alloys and stainless steel, it should be assumed that the surface of orthodontic wires shows a significant degree of variation, and wires of the same type from the same manufacturer may differ significantly in this respect.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Oral leukoplakia (OL) is a potential neoplasmic lesion. The aim of this study was to apply texture analysis (TA) and fractal dimension analysis (FDA) to estimate the effectiveness of OL treatment using an Er:YAG laser. METHODS: Eighteen patients with 32 lesions were treated. Laser procedures were conducted using the LiteTouch™ Er:YAG Dental Laser. The diameter of the operational tip was 1.3 mm, the power was 50 mJ, the frequency was 50 Hz, and the wavelength was 2940 nm. TA was based on long and short-run emphasis inverse moments, difference entropy, inverse difference moment, and wavelet decomposition for two-dimensional photography. FDA was measured using the box-counting method. RESULTS: Total response was achieved in 50% of lesions, partial response was observed in 47%, and 3% of lesions did not respond to treatment. Recurrence occurred in 34% of lesions. TA features indicated pathological images depicting leukoplakia and complete reconstruction of the correct mucosal image after laser ablation. The discrete wavelet transformation feature detects much larger structures than the properties derived from the run-length matrix and co-occurrence matrix. CONCLUSIONS: The Er:YAG laser is an effective treatment method in cases of oral leukoplakia. Leukoplakia treatment by Er:YAG laser is an effective modality, as revealed by the oral mucosa microstructure. TA and FDA are promising methods to estimate the effectiveness of OL treatment.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To study the association between the assessment of central macular vascular layers by optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) and peripheral nonperfusion evaluated by fluorescein angiography (FA) in patients with retinal venous occlusion (RVO). METHODS: Retrospective review of RVO patients without macular edema. Patients underwent a comprehensive ophthalmic examination including FA, spectral-domain OCT, and OCT-A. Significant ischemia was defined as nonperfusion areas superior or equal to the equivalent of one retinal quadrant on FA. Vascular density (VD) and foveal avascular zone were measured using AngioAnalytics software. Fractal dimension (FD) and lacunarity (LAC) were computed using an algorithm designed by MATLAB (MathWorks, Natick, MA). These variables were used to build a model that translates their association with OCT-A parameters. RESULTS: There were 48 eyes (48 patients) of which 19 had significant peripheral nonperfusion. Deep capillary plexus FD, VD, and LAC were associated with significant ischemia. In fact, regarding the association with this outcome, LAC alone had the highest area under the curve (AUC = 0.88) followed by FD (AUC = 0.85) and VD (AUC = 0.73). The multivariable model that included LAC and VD, adjusted by best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) achieved the best performance for the identification of severe nonperfusion on wide-field FA (AUC = 0.93). CONCLUSIONS: The characteristics of the central macular deep capillary plexus on OCT-A may be associated with peripheral nonperfusion on FA, particularly the combination of LAC and vessel density after adjusting by BCVA. TRANSLATIONAL RELEVANCE: Fractal-based metrics applied to OCT-A may become a valuable marker of ischemia in RVO and help guide the clinical decision to perform invasive angiography.

RESUMO

We present a box counting fractal dimension (FD) analysis of the dendritic patterns obtained under conditions far from equilibrium via rapid evaporation of a sessile drop containing reactive ZnO nanoparticles. These dendrites were manifestations of solidified Bénard-Marangoni (BM) instability convection cells, and we previously noted that their complex hierarchical morphologies were superficially analogous to the foliage of red algae, Spanish dagger, or spider plant. The fractal dimension of the Bénard-Marangoni dendrites was found to vary in the range of 1.77-1.89 and also depend on the size of the Bénard-Marangoni cells. These fractal dimension results were correlated with the morphological details of the Bénard-Marangoni cells and ZnO particle characteristics, providing a quantitative description of such complex surface patterns emerging from the dynamic process of the Bénard-Marangoni instability.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a noninvasive method for the treatment of premalignant lesions, such as leukoplakia and lichen planus (LP). These lesions are very irregular. In the case of such irregular lesions, fractal dimension analysis (FDA) is very helpful. Photodynamic diagnosis (PDD) enables the visualization of irregular lesion shapes more precisely than a classical white-light examination. OBJECTIVES: In our study, we tried to distinguish oral leukoplakia and LP, using FDA in a classical examination with white light and PDD. Lesions treated using PDT were histopathologically verified. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We enrolled 35 patients in our study. Fractalyse software v. 2.4 (University of Franche-Comté, Besançon, France) was used to count fractal dimensions (FDs). Photodynamic therapy and PDD were mediated with 20% delta-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA). RESULTS: Fractal dimensions of leukoplakia foci of the tongue in a white-light examination were significantly lower than in PDD. In the case of LP, a significant difference of FDs was observed between lesions in the cheek and in the alveolar ridge region. Differences in FDs were observed between leukoplakia foci of the alveolar ridge, tongue and palate. A complete response of leukoplakia foci to PDT was observed in 10 out of 34 lesions, partial remission occurred in 20 lesions and a total lack of response was noted in 4 lesions. Generally, LP was completely treated in 7 out of 14 cases, a partial response was observed in 5 lesions and a failure of PDT treatment was noted in 2 cases. CONCLUSIONS: Fractal dimension analysis may be a useful method in the comparison of complicated shapes of such lesions as LP or leukoplakia, but our study did not confirm that this method may be used to distinguish LP and leukoplakia without a histopathological examination. Photodynamic therapy is an effective treatment method in the case of LP and leukoplakia of the oral cavity.

RESUMO

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is characterized by muscle extracellular matrix disorganization due to the increased collagen deposition leading to fibrosis that significantly exacerbates disease progression. Fractal dimension analysis is a method that quantifies tissue/cellular disorganization and characterizes complex structures. The first objective of the present study was use fractal analysis to evaluate extracellular matrix disorganization in mdx mice soleus muscle. Next, we mimic a hyper-proliferation of fibrogenic cells by co-culturing NIH3T3 fibroblasts and C2C12 myoblasts to test whether fibroblasts induce disorganization in myoblast arrangement. Here, we show mdx presented high skeletal muscle disorganization as revealed by fractal analysis. Similarly, this method revealed that myoblasts co-cultured with fibroblast also presented cellular arrangement disorganization. We also reanalyzed skeletal muscle microarrays transcriptomic data from mdx and DMD patients that revealed transcripts related to extracellular matrix organization. This analysis also identified Osteoglycin, which was validated as a potential regulator of ECM organization in mdx dystrophic muscles. Our results demonstrate that fractal dimension is useful tool for the analysis of skeletal muscle disorganization in DMD and also reveal a fibroblast-myoblast cross-talk that contributes to "in vitro" myoblast disarrangement.

RESUMO

The suitability of new dynamic system analysis was investigated to compare postural control in Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) and Down syndrome (DS) patients. Time-domain, frequency-domain parameters and fractal dimension (FD) of centre of pressure (CoP) were computed in maintaining normal standing on a force platform in 20 DS and 13 PWS patients, compared to 26 obese (obese control group, OCG) and 20 healthy individuals (healthy control group, HCG). DS and PWS showed greater displacements along both directions and longer sway path (SP) parameter than HCG and OCG, with statistical differences between PWS and DS for anteroposterior displacement and SP. DS used higher frequency strategy when compared to PWS, OCG and HCG. Both DS and PWS were characterised by greater values of FD than OCG and HCG, with higher values in DS. The analyses in frequency domain and of the dynamic nature of CoP suggest that DS patients are characterised by a more complex and irregular signal than PWS patients.

RESUMO

We studied the evaporation-induced pattern formation in droplets of common wheat kernel leakages prepared out of ancient and modern wheat cultivars as a possible tool for wheat quality analysis. The experiments showed that the substances which passed into the water during the soaking of the kernels created crystalline structures with different degrees of complexity while the droplets were evaporating. The forms ranged from spots and simple structures with single ramifications, through dendrites, up to highly organized hexagonal shapes and fractal-like structures. The patterns were observed and photographed using dark field microscopy in small magnifications. The evaluation of the patterns was performed both visually and by means of the fractal dimension analysis. From the results, it can be inferred that the wheat cultivars differed in their pattern-forming capacities. Two of the analyzed wheat cultivars showed poor pattern formation, whereas another two created well-formed and complex patterns. Additionally, the wheat cultivars were analyzed for their vigor by means of the germination test and measurement of the electrical conductivity of the grain leakages. The results showed that the more vigorous cultivars also created more complex patterns, whereas the weaker cultivars created predominantly poor forms. This observation suggests a correlation between the wheat seed quality and droplet evaporation patterns.
