During the procedure a sample for histologic study was taken that confirmed the existence of an ovarian yolk sac tumor, reason why she was operated again to extirpate the contralateral ovary and the infiltrated omentum. Later on polychemotherapy was indicated according to the protocol and the post-treatment clinical course was satisfactory.

RESUMO

Extragonadal teratomas in adults are an extremely rare entity. Teratomas may be mature or immature and are characterized by their midline presentation. We are presenting here a case report of immature teratoma of the palm in a 35-year-old female. The patient developed a recurrent swelling of the palm from which a wedge biopsy was taken and sent for histopathological examination. A diagnosis of "immature teratoma, grade 2" was made, whose margins were compromised. Later on ultrasonography (USG) abdomen and pelvis and whole-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed no significant findings ruling out the possibility of an occult primary. MRI palm showed a well-defined cystic lesion with loculations suggestive of teratoma. Re-exploration was advised to achieve free margins.

RESUMO

Worldwide, ovarian cancer (OC) is the seventh most common type of malignant neoplasm in women and the eighth cause of mortality in them. The classification of OC is made by the possible origin of one of the three main components of the ovary: epithelium, stroma, and germinal cells. Due to this the main malignant tumors arising from the ovary are epithelial carcinoma, germ cell tumor, sex cord-stromal tumor, and Krukenberg's tumor. The most common are the epithelial carcinomas, in which the most prevalent is serous ovarian carcinoma. Nevertheless, the subtype of OC varies according to the age of appearance. The global incidence of OC has been stable during the last decades, but, it´s still a disease that has contributed to a considerable number of deaths around the world. The epidemiology of this cancer shows differences between races and countries due to several factors including genetic and economic. The detection of this cancer has been problematic as there is no screening public program for its early detection and as a consequence, most OCs are detected in an advanced stage where most of the time it has already spread to other parts different from the ovary. The purpose of this article is to present a comprehensive review of the general epidemiology, incidence rates, prevalence rates, mortality, and survival of the different types of OC worldwide and in certain regions.

Retroperitoneal teratomas constitute 3% of all pediatric tumors. However, no information is available in Colombia to support this frequency, and there is no consensus on the diagnosis, management and prognosis of this tumor. We report a case in a newborn girl in Bucaramanga, Colombia, diagnosed by means of imaginological studies and treated by surgery. We review the literature, considering general aspects, differential diagnosis, histological features and management, in order to guide physicians to consider this diagnostic possibility.
