Grasslands represent a major biome on Earth and play a vital role in ecosystem functioning and dynamics. However, owing to the variations among grassland types, the impact of grazing on plant community diversity and stability remains unclear. This study is based on the typical steppe of the Mongolian Plateau. Field sampling and data analysis were combined to qualitatively and quantitatively investigate the structural characteristics, species diversity, and stability of plant communities under varying grazing intensities, that is, four-season nomadic, two-season rotational, and sedentary grazing (FSNG, TSRG, and SG, respectively). The results indicated that FSNG pastures exhibited the largest number of plant species while FSNG and TSRG pastures exhibited relatively high importance values for the primary dominant species. Carex duriuscula, Chenopodium glaucum, and Cleistogenes squarrosa were prominent in SG pastures, with C. duriuscula having the largest importance value. The mean height, cover, and aboveground biomass of plant communities in FSNG were significantly higher than those in SG (p < 0.05), with no significant difference observed between FSNG and TSRG. FSNG also demonstrated the highest Shannon-Wiener, Simpson, and Pielou indexes. The Shannon-Wiener and Simpson indexes between the FSNG, TSRG, and SG pastures showed significant differences (p < 0.05). Nomadic plant communities displayed positive loosely interspecific traits, suggesting independence and positive succession. Conversely, communities in TSRG and SG exhibited negative correlations and higher instability. The stability analysis ranked community stability as FSNG > TSRG > SG, suggesting that judicious grazing practices could enhance grassland stability. The findings reveal that grazing patterns influence plant community composition and function and that FSNG pastures promote higher species diversity, perennial dominance, and overall stability compared with TSRG and SG pastures.

Spectral analysis of meat combined with chemometric analysis has been identified as a promising tool for authenticating livestock-animal diets. The objectives of this study were (i) to determine whether the visible-NIR spectrum of perirenal adipose tissue (PAT) and caudal adipose tissue (CAT) can reliably discriminate lambs pasture-finished for different durations before slaughter, and (ii) to analyze the kinetics of appearance and stabilization of the visible-NIR spectrum-based pasture signature in PAT and CAT. Four groups of 50-55 lambs were used over three years: lambs finished on lucerne pasture for 0 (L0, concentrate-fed in stall), 21 (L21), 42 (L42) and 63 (L63) days before slaughter. Partial least squares discriminant analysis was applied on PAT or CAT visible-NIR spectra to discriminate the groups. No one adipose tissue reliably discriminated the four groups, with less than 62 % lambs correctly classified. However, visible-NIR spectroscopy was able to discriminate stall-fed (L0) from pasture-finished (L21 + L42 + L63) lambs, with an accuracy of 93.8 % and 87.5 % lambs correctly classified based on PAT and CAT spectra, respectively. The lucerne pasture fingerprint (or signature) on visible-NIR spectrum appeared between 0 and 42 days in more than 95 % of lambs. It stabilized between 42 and 63 days in CAT, but had not stabilized within the range of grazing durations pre-slaughter explored in PAT. Further research into shorter and longer pasture-finishing durations could help determine more precisely the time required for the pasture signature to appear and stabilize in animal tissues.

Central European forests have been shaped by complex human interactions throughout the Holocene, with significant changes following the introduction of domesticated animals in the Neolithic (∼7.5-6.0 ka before present [BP]). However, understanding early pastoral practices and their impact on forests is limited by methods for detecting animal movement across past landscapes. Here, we examine ancient sedimentary DNA (sedaDNA) preserved at the Velký Mamuták rock shelter in northern Bohemia (Czech Republic), which has been a forested enclave since the early Holocene. We find that domesticated animals, their associated microbiomes, and plants potentially gathered for fodder have clear representation by the Late Neolithic, around 6.0 ka BP, and persist throughout the Bronze Age into recent times. We identify a change in dominant grazing species from sheep to pigs in the Bronze Age (∼4.1-3.0 ka BP) and interpret the impact this had in the mid-Holocene retrogressions that still define the structure of Central European forests today. This study highlights the ability of ancient metagenomics to bridge archaeological and paleoecological methods and provide an enhanced perspective on the roots of the "Anthropocene."

Grazing in Miombo woodlands is essential for the livelihoods of the pastoral and agropastoral communities that live adjacent to these fragile ecosystems. However, Miombo woodlands offer not only fodder for livestock but also fertile land for crop farming; hence, they are equally important to the farmers residing in these areas. Due to the importance of the Miombo woodlands for the livelihoods of several groups, the consumption of and competition for Miombo resources has increased over time and now threatens the overall health of the ecosystem. This study aimed to identify the grazing techniques practiced by different livelihood groups in Miombo woodlands; their preferences for different practices, as well as the factors that influence these preferences, so as to understand how sustainable grazing can be achieved for better ecosystem health. The study was conducted in Handeni, Kilombero, and Kilosa districts and covered pastoralists, agropastoralists, and farmers. We carried out focus group discussions, key informant interviews, and a survey of 246 respondents. Un-patterned rotational grazing was the most preferred grazing technique by all three groups, and the only technique the three groups shared a preference for. All the groups took a neutral stance in relation to continuous grazing. Their preferences for other grazing techniques differ. The study highlights the need to raise awareness amongst pastoralists about land ownership and management and recommends enhancing land property rights for all groups in order to harmonize livestock keeping and other land uses for achieving sustainable grazing and overall ecosystem health in the fragile Miombo woodlands of Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Northern ecosystems are strongly influenced by herbivores that differ in their impacts on the ecosystem. Yet the role of herbivore diversity in shaping the structure and functioning of tundra ecosystems has been overlooked. With climate and land-use changes causing rapid shifts in Arctic species assemblages, a better understanding of the consequences of herbivore diversity changes for tundra ecosystem functioning is urgently needed. This systematic review synthesizes available evidence on the effects of herbivore diversity on different processes, functions, and properties of tundra ecosystems. METHODS: Following a published protocol, our systematic review combined primary field studies retrieved from bibliographic databases, search engines and specialist websites that compared tundra ecosystem responses to different levels of vertebrate and invertebrate herbivore diversity. We used the number of functional groups of herbivores (i.e., functional group richness) as a measure of the diversity of the herbivore assemblage. We screened titles, abstracts, and full texts of studies using pre-defined eligibility criteria. We critically appraised the validity of the studies, tested the influence of different moderators, and conducted sensitivity analyses. Quantitative synthesis (i.e., calculation of effect sizes) was performed for ecosystem responses reported by at least five articles and meta-regressions including the effects of potential modifiers for those reported by at least 10 articles. REVIEW FINDINGS: The literature searches retrieved 5944 articles. After screening titles, abstracts, and full texts, 201 articles including 3713 studies (i.e., individual comparisons) were deemed relevant for the systematic review, with 2844 of these studies included in quantitative syntheses. The available evidence base on the effects of herbivore diversity on tundra ecosystems is concentrated around well-established research locations and focuses mainly on the impacts of vertebrate herbivores on vegetation. Overall, greater herbivore diversity led to increased abundance of feeding marks by herbivores and soil temperature, and to reduced total abundance of plants, graminoids, forbs, and litter, plant leaf size, plant height, and moss depth, but the effects of herbivore diversity were difficult to tease apart from those of excluding vertebrate herbivores. The effects of different functional groups of herbivores on graminoid and lichen abundance compensated each other, leading to no net effects when herbivore effects were combined. In turn, smaller herbivores and large-bodied herbivores only reduced plant height when occurring together but not when occurring separately. Greater herbivore diversity increased plant diversity in graminoid tundra but not in other habitat types. CONCLUSIONS: This systematic review underscores the importance of herbivore diversity in shaping the structure and function of Arctic ecosystems, with different functional groups of herbivores exerting additive or compensatory effects that can be modulated by environmental conditions. Still, many challenges remain to fully understand the complex impacts of herbivore diversity on tundra ecosystems. Future studies should explicitly address the role of herbivore diversity beyond presence-absence, targeting a broader range of ecosystem responses and explicitly including invertebrate herbivores. A better understanding of the role of herbivore diversity will enhance our ability to predict whether and where shifts in herbivore assemblages might mitigate or further amplify the impacts of environmental change on Arctic ecosystems.

BACKGROUND: Traditionally managed semi-natural pastures are recognised for their high biodiversity. One drawback is that these pastures are often low in fodder production and hence rather unprofitable, which may lead to abandonment. Two ways to increase production and profitability and maintain grazing are to (i) offer the grazers supplementary feed, or (ii) co-enclose the semi-natural pasture with an improved pasture. Both practices may transfer nutrients to the semi-natural pasture, with potential negative effects on biodiversity. This systematic review aimed to analyse the available evidence concerning the following primary question: "What is the effect of giving grazers access to additional nutrient sources on biodiversity in semi-natural pastures?" (Q1). We also used two supporting questions: "What is the effect of giving grazers access to additional nutrient sources on nutrient status of the soils of semi-natural pastures?" (Q2) and "How do the grazers of semi-natural pastures behave while having access to additional nutrient sources?" (Q3). METHODS: Searches for peer-reviewed and grey literature were made using bibliographic databases, search engines, specialist websites, and stakeholder contacts. Literature was screened for relevance according to predefined eligibility criteria, and critical appraisal was performed using the tool CEECAT. A database of the relevant studies was compiled. Descriptive information about the evidence base is presented in tables and an interactive evidence atlas. Because of absent study setup replication, Q1 and Q2 were not analysed quantitatively. However, sample size allowed the use of mixed modelling to quantitatively analyse Q3 regarding the effects of (i) co-enclosing an improved pasture on grazers' electivity for the improved area, and (ii) supplementary feed on the forage intake of grazers. REVIEW FINDINGS: A total of 12 articles on the effects of supplementary feeding and 19 on the effects of co-enclosing an improved pasture were included, of which some targeted multiple review questions. Because of the limited literature, it is not possible to draw any conclusions concerning the effects on biodiversity (Q1) or nutritional status (Q2) in semi-natural pastures. For Q3, 28 studies fulfilled our criteria, of which 18 investigated the behaviour of grazers related to co-enclosing an improved pasture, and 10 investigated their forage intake while having access to supplementary fodder. The results show that all grazer species except goats preferred grazing in the improved areas regardless of whether they were grazing together with other grazer species or not. We found no effect of supplementary feeding on forage intake of the grazers. CONCLUSIONS: We detected a knowledge gap concerning the effects of the two additional nutrient sources on semi-natural pasture biodiversity (Q1) and nutrient status (Q2), which points toward further research needs. Analysis of Q3 showed that grazers prefer to graze improved compared to semi-natural pasture areas. However, how this behaviour subsequently affects nutrient transport and biodiversity is unclear and cannot be translated into management recommendations. To gain better knowledge about the primary question of our review, research focusing specifically on this question is needed. We provide suggestions for how such studies could be designed, including spatio-temporal setup, and key management and environmental conditions to consider.

Meat quality is important in the meat-production chain. Conflicting reports of the effects of feeding systems on sheep growth performance and meat quality exist. By way of meta-analysis, we reviewed the literature on the growth and slaughter performance, and meat quality of lambs that grazed solely on pasture, those that grazed on pasture but received a dietary supplement, and those were exclusively fed indoors. The relevant literature comprised 28 papers, from which response variables of interest were obtained. Compared with stall-fed sheep, pasture-grazing led to significantly (p < 0.05) lower average daily gain, slaughter live weight, hot carcass weight, cold carcass weight, and similar dressing percentage, but pasture-grazed sheep fed a supplement had similar (p > 0.05) values for each of these attributes to stall-fed sheep. The quality of the longissimus muscle from lambs that grazed either exclusively on pasture or pasture with a supplement had significantly (p < 0.05) lower lightness and intramuscular fat content, and significantly (p < 0.05) higher yellowness, Warner-Bratzler shear force, and protein content than meat from stall-fed sheep. We conclude that sheep that have fed exclusively on pasture have lower carcass yield and meat edibility, but improved meat quality, and that pasture-fed sheep that received a supplement had comparable carcass attributes, but greater meat color and health quality than stall-fed sheep.

To evaluate the ecosystem services of silvopastoral systems through grazing activities, an advanced Internet of Things (IoT) framework is introduced for capturing extensive data on the spatial dynamics of sheep and goat grazing. The methodology employed an innovative IoT system, integrating a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) tracker and environmental sensors mounted on the animals to accurately monitor the extent, intensity, and frequency of grazing. The experimental results demonstrated the high performance and robustness of the IoT system, with minimal data loss and significant battery efficiency, validating its suitability for long-term field evaluations. Long Range (LoRa) technology ensured consistent communication over long distances, covering the entire grazing zone and a range of 6 km in open areas. The superior battery performance, enhanced by a solar panel, allowed uninterrupted operation for up to 37 days with 5-min interval acquisitions. The GNSS module provided high-resolution data on movement patterns, with an accuracy of up to 10 m after firmware adjustments. The two-part division of the device ensured it did not rotate on the animals' necks. The system demonstrated adaptability and resilience in various terrains and animal conditions, confirming the viability of IoT-based systems for pasture monitoring and highlighting their potential to improve silvopastoral management, promoting sustainable practices and conservation strategies. This work uniquely focuses on documenting the shepherd's role in the ecosystem, providing a low-cost solution that distinguishes itself from commercial alternatives aimed primarily at real-time flock tracking.

Grazing plays a significant role in shaping both aboveground vegetation and belowground microbial communities in arid and semi-arid grasslands, which in turn affects ecosystem functions and sustainability. Therefore, it was essential to implement effective grazing management practices to preserve ecological balance and support sustainable development in these delicate environments. To optimize the traditional continuous grazing policy, we conducted a 10-year seasonal grazing experiment with five treatments in a typical grassland in northern China: no grazing (NG), continuous summer grazing (CG), and three seasonal grazing treatments (G57 in May and July, G68 in June and August, and G79 in July and September). Our study found that although grazing reduced plant community biomass, G68 treatment maintained high plant height and community diversity (P < 0.05). Grazing did not affect soil bacterial and archaeal alpha diversity, but CG treatment reduced soil fungal diversity (P < 0.05). CG reduced the archaeal network's vertices (which represent microbial taxa, OTUs) and connections (ecological interactions between taxa), but seasonal grazing increased its complexity. Furthermore, grazing did not change bacterial networks but enhanced cross-domain interactions (relationships between different biological groups) of plant-soil fungi and plant-soil archaea. Overall, we used the Mantel test to find that soil microbial diversity was positively correlated with soil physicochemical properties rather than plant community characteristics after grazing. These findings are beneficial for the optimization of sustainable grassland management policies and the protection of plant and soil biodiversity.

The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the Hg, Pb, Cd, and Mn levels in egg feed, soil, and water among laying hens, laying ducks, and free-grazing duck farms in contaminated and uncontaminated areas. This study revealed that the Hg concentration in the eggs of free-grazing ducks was significantly greater than that in the eggs of laying hens and ducks in both contaminated and uncontaminated areas. However, the Pb and Mn levels in the eggs of laying ducks and free-grazing ducks were significantly greater than those in the eggs of laying hens in the contaminated area. Unfortunately, the Hg, Pb, Cd, and Mn concentrations in the feed, soil, and water from these three farms in both areas were not significantly different (P > 0.05). Hg and Cd were confirmed to be enriched in the egg albumin fraction, while Pb and Mn were found mainly in the egg yolk. However, egg consumption from free-grazing duck farms was the riskiest to Hg, Pb, and Mn contamination in the contaminated area. Additionally, the ecological risk factor (ER) in the soil revealed that all the farms were at considerable to high environmental risk for Cd except for Hg and Pb. Although the potential ecological risk index (RI) indicated a moderate risk for all farms in both contaminated and uncontaminated areas, these results were not consistent with our hypothesis. Therefore, the information gained in this study could be useful for setting up mitigation strategies and making decisions about public health concerns related to health hazards, especially for ecological risk assessments of heavy metal contamination.

Grasslands are recognized as important reservoirs of soil biodiversity. Livestock grazing is implemented as a grassland management strategy to improve soil quality and enhance plant diversity. Soil microbial communities play a pivotal role in grassland ecosystems, so it is important to examine whether grazing practices affect the soil microbiome. Previous studies on grazing have primarily focused on bacteria and fungi, overlooking an important group-protists. Protists are vital in soil microbiomes as they drive nutrient availability and trophic interactions. Determining the impact of grazing on protists and their relationships with bacterial and fungal communities is important for understanding soil microbiome dynamics in grazed ecosystems. In this study, we investigated soil bacterial, fungal, and protist communities under four grazing levels: no grazing, moderate-use grazing, full-use grazing, and heavy-use grazing. Our results showed that heavy grazing led to a greater diversity of protists with specific groups, such as Discoba and Conosa, increasing in abundance. We also found strong associations between protist and bacterial/fungal members, indicating their intricate relationships within the soil microbiome. For example, the abundance of predatory protists increased under grazing while arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi decreased. Notably, arbuscular mycorrhizae were negatively associated with predatory groups. Furthermore, we observed that microbial network complexity increased with grazing intensity, with fungal members playing an important role in the network. Overall, our study reports the impact of temporal grazing intensity on soil microbial dynamics and highlights the importance of considering protist ecology when evaluating the effects of grazing on belowground communities in grassland ecosystems. IMPORTANCE: The significance of this study lies in its exploration of the effects of temporal grazing intensity on the dynamics of the soil microbiome, specifically focusing on the often-neglected role of protists. Our findings provide insights into the complex relationships between protists, bacteria, and fungi, emphasizing their impact on trophic interactions in the soil. Gaining a better understanding of these dynamics is essential for developing effective strategies for grassland management and conservation, underscoring the importance of incorporating protist ecology into microbiome studies in grasslands.

Free-ranging native Dartmoor and Exmoor ponies have not only held strong cultural and environmental significance for thousands of years within their respective national parks, but their environmental benefits and naturally selected characteristics have also been acknowledged and harnessed for conservation grazing and rewilding programmes. Despite a wealth of literature regarding the welfare of sports, leisure and working horses, there is little information concerning the welfare of free-ranging and extensively grazing ponies. The present study compared the welfare of native Exmoor and Dartmoor ponies grazing on the moors in their respective national parks (n = 47) with those that have been translocated to other areas of the UK for use in conservation grazing and rewilding programmes (n = 29) using a specifically designed observational welfare assessment protocol for free-ranging ponies. The results showed a significant difference between common land and conservation grazing ponies in the scores for Body Condition Score, Water Quality and Availability, Environmental Hazards, Human Disturbance, Skin and Coat Condition and the Human Approach Test. Despite no evidence of significant welfare compromise being identified, this study emphasises the importance of year-round monitoring of welfare and the feasibility of the observational welfare protocol to be used by pony keepers and grazing managers in the future.

OBJECTIVE: Grazing, defined as the unplanned and repetitive consumption of small or moderate amounts of food without feeling hungry, has been particulary investigated in relation to insufficient weight loss or early weight regain following bariatric surgery in recent years. The aim of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of the Turkish form of the Repetitive Eating Scale (Rep[eat]-Q), which assesses grazing within a standardized framework. METHOD: The sample of the study consisted of a total of 491 adults, including 334 females and 157 males, with ages ranging from 17 to 62 participated in the study. The data were collected using the Rep[eat]-Q Turkish Form, Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ-R21), CES-D Depression Scale (CES-D), and Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7 (GAD-7). RESULTS: Results of the confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the structure of the Rep[eat]-Q Turkish Form aligns with the original form, indicating that the scale consists of two factors named Compulsive Grazing (CG) and Repetitive Eating (RE). The internal consistency coefficients were found to be 0.93 for the total scale score, 0.91 for the RE subscale, and 0.88 for the CG subscale. The test-retest reliability ranged from 0.73 to 0.83 (p<0.001). It was found that the total score of the Rep(eat)-Q is strongly positively correlated with Emotional Eating and Uncontrolled Eating subscales of the TFEQ-R21, and moderately positively correlated with the CES-D (depression) and the GAD-7 (anxiety). CONCLUSION: The findings of the study demonstrated that the Turkish version of the Rep(eat)-Q is a reliable and valid measure to assess grazing.

Background: Infection with tick-borne pathogens (TBPs) causes anemia, jaundice, and growth retardation in cattle. Many studies have conducted antigen (Ag) tests for major TBPs, such as Anaplasma spp. and Theileria spp., in Korean indigenous cattle (KIC); however, few studies have analyzed antibodies (Ab) against these pathogens. Materials and Methods: This study simultaneously tested 15 housed cattle raised indoor for over a year and 67 grazing cattle for Anaplasma spp. and Theileria spp. Ag using polymerase chain reaction analysis and Ab using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: The A. phagocytophilum was detected in 3 housed cattle (20.0%) and 30 grazing cattle (44.8%), whereas the T. orientalis was detected in 3 housed cattle (20.0%) and 54 grazing cattle (80.6%). The positivity rates for Anaplasma spp. Ab did not differ significantly between housed and grazing cattle (4 out of 15 [93.3%] and 55 out of 67 [80.0%], respectively). The positivity rates for Theileria spp. Ab were higher in grazing cattle than in housed cattle (21 of 67 [31.3%] and 0 out of 15 [0.0%], respectively) (P < 0.01). No difference was observed between the frequency of grazing and the abundance of Ab against either pathogen. Meanwhile, as a result of comparing the detection of pathogen Ag and Ab, Anaplasma spp. showed the highest proportions of 73.3% and 47.8% in Ag (-)/Ab (+) for housed cattle and grazing cattle, respectively. Theileria spp. showed the highest rates of 80.0% in Ag (-)/Ab (-) for housed cattle and 52.2% in Ag (+)/Ab (-) for grazing cattle. Conclusions: This is the first study to determine the impact of antibody abundance against Anaplasma spp. and Theileria spp. on antigen prevalence in KIC.

The production of allelochemicals by the toxigenic dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella is one of the suggested mechanisms to facilitate its bloom formation and persistence by outcompeting other phototrophic protists and reducing grazing pressure. In Southern California, toxic events caused by A. catenella and paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) regularly impact coastal ecosystems; however, the trophic interactions and mechanisms promoting this species in a food web context are still not fully understood. In the present study, we combined a dynamical mathematical model with laboratory experiments to investigate potential toxic and allelochemical effects of an A. catenella strain isolated off the coast of Los Angeles, Southern California, on competitors and a common zooplankton consumer. Experiments were conducted using three toxigenic strains of A. catenella, comparing the new Californian isolate (Alex Cal) to two strains previously described from the North Sea, a lytic (Alex2) and non-lytic (Alex5) strain, testing for donor density-dependent effects on two phytoplankton species (Rhodomonas salina, Tetraselmis sp.) and on the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis. Bioassays revealed a steep decline in competitor and consumer populations with increasing Alex Cal concentrations, indicating an intermediate lytic activity compared to the North Sea strains (lytic Alex2 and non-lytic Alex5). The rotifer fed and grew well on the PST- toxic, but non-lytic Alex5 strain, while its survival significantly decreased with increasing concentrations of the two lytic strains Alex Cal and Alex 2, indicating that negative effects on the rotifer were mediated by allelochemicals rather than PST-toxins. Mixed culture experiments including both competitors and consumers demonstrated that the intensity of allelochemical effects not only depended on the A. catenella density but also on the target density. Negative effects on grazers were alleviated by co-occurring competitors with a lower sensitivity to allelochemicals, thus reducing harmful compounds and allowing grazing control on the dinoflagellate to come into effect again. Results from mixed culture experiments were supported by the mathematical approach used in this study which was calibrated with data from simple monoculture growth, pairwise competition and predator-prey experiments, demonstrating the applicability of this model approach to predict the outcome of more complex food web dynamics at the community level.

Dominant species occupy a pivotal role in plant community, influencing the structure and function of the ecosystem. The spatial distributions of dominant species can react to the effect of different grazing intensities, thereby reflecting their tolerance and adaptive strategies toward grazing. In this study, geostatistical methods were mainly used to study the spatial distribution characteristics of Stipa krylovii Roshev. and Leymus chinensis (Trin.) Tzvel. species at two interval scales (quadrat size 5 m × 5 m, 10 m × 10 m) and two treatments (free grazing, FG, 1.66 sheep·ha- 1·a- 1; control, CK, 0 sheep·ha- 1·a- 1) in typical steppe of Inner Mongolia. A systematic sampling method was used in each 100 m × 100 m representative sample plots to obtain the height, coverage, and density of all species in the community. The results showed that grazing altered the concentrated distribution of S. krylovii and the spatial mosaic distribution pattern of S. krylovii and L. chinensis while having no effect on the spatial clumped distribution of L. chinensis. It also found that the spatial distributions of dominant species are primarily affected by structural factors, and random factors such as long-term grazing led to a transition of S. krylovii from a concentrated distribution to a small patchy random pattern should not be overlooked. Our findings suggest that long-term grazing alters the spatial distribution pattern of dominant species and that adaptive strategies may be the key for maintaining the dominant role of structural factors.

BACKGROUND: Equine obesity is a growing concern. Much of the current management advice centres on dietary restrictions, including the removal or limitation of grazing. Little is known about the impact of these approaches on the welfare of the horse. OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the effect of two commonly used grazing systems advocated for the control of weight-the 'strip-grazing' and the 'track' systems-on the behaviour and welfare of outdoor-living ponies. STUDY DESIGN: A within-subject cross-over experimental design with four groups of pasture-kept ponies experiencing each system for 4 weeks in a random order. METHODS: Time budgets and behavioural indicators of welfare were measured using 24-h electronic surveillance, morphometric parameters including weight, body condition score and cresty neck score were measured weekly and activity levels were tracked. The effect of grazing system on movement and behaviour was tested using a general linear model. RESULTS: Ponies moved more [median (IQR) % time spent moving, track: 3.23% (2.08%), strip: 2.02% (0.90%); p = 0.001] and travelled a greater distance [median (IQR) metres/24 h, track: 7013.47 m (1761.49 m), strip: 5331.91 m (494.16 m); p < 0.001] and engaged in less overt agonistic behaviour on the track system compared with the strip system [median (IQR) prevalence per hour; track: 0.14 (0.30), strip: 0.21 (0.37) p = 0.02]. MAIN LIMITATIONS: A relatively short time period of exposure to each grazing system. CONCLUSIONS: Ponies on strip systems moved less and exhibited increased agonistic interactions compared with the track system, maybe as a result of a perceived reduction in space or concentration of resources, although the accessible areas were matched. These results suggest that there may be physical as well as psychological health benefits to the track system.

We selected 15 sheep-grazed sand pastures along a gradient of increasing grazing intensity to study the fine-scale patterns of main biomass fractions (green biomass, litter) and that of plant species and functional groups (life forms and social behaviour types). We classified them into five grazing intensity levels based on stocking density, proximity to drinking and resting places and the number of faeces. We aimed to answer the following questions: (i) How does increasing intensity of sheep grazing affect the amount of green biomass, the species richness and their relationship in sand pastures? (ii) How does increasing intensity of sheep grazing affect the biomass of perennial and short-lived graminoids and forbs? (iii) How does the disturbance value-expressed in the biomass ratio of disturbance-tolerant and ruderal species-change along the gradient of grazing intensity? A unimodal relationship between green biomass and species richness was detected; however, the ordination (canonical correspondence analysis, CCA) showed no clustering of pastures subjected to the same levels of grazing intensity. Along the grazing intensity gradient we found an increasing trend in species richness and significant differences in green biomass (decreasing trend), litter (decreasing trend), graminoids (decreasing trend) and short-lived forbs (increasing trend). We found an increasing amount of disturbance-tolerant and ruderal species with increasing grazing intensity. We suggest that we might need to use multiple scales for sampling and a fine-scale assessment of grazing intensity. Our findings might be instructive for pastures in densely populated regions, which are prone to the encroachment of disturbance-tolerant and ruderal species.

Grazing management significantly contributes to low beef production in cow-calf systems within the Rio de la Plata native grasslands. An herbage allowance (HA) of 4 kg DM/kg BW increased the productive response of primiparous cows grazing shallow soils compared to 2.5. However, the impact of HA on metabolic changes and its association with productive response were not studied. We studied two levels of native grassland HA from -150 days relative to calving (DC) to weaning (195 DC) in spring-calving primiparous beef cows undergoing temporary weaning (TW) and flushing at 86 ±â€¯12 DC on herbage intake (HI), body condition score (BCS), BW, milk yield, calf weight, concentrations of metabolic hormones, and the probability of ovulation and pregnancy. Thirty-one heifers were assigned to HA treatments that fluctuated throughout seasons: autumn (-150 to -90 DC) at 5 and 3 kg DM/kg BW, winter (-90 to 0 DC) at 3 and 3 kg DM/kg BW, and spring-summer (0 to 195 DC) at 4 and 2 kg DM/kg BW for High and Low HA, respectively. Data were analysed using linear models and generalised linear models for continuous and categorical variables, respectively. During the autumn period, HI, insulin, IGF-I, BCS, and BW were higher in High HA than Low, despite small differences in herbage mass between HA. Throughout the winter, spring, and summer, HI, insulin, leptin, and BCS changes did not differ between HA. However, IGF-I concentrations were greater at -65 and -40 DC (84 vs 55 ±â€¯8.6 ng/mL; P < 0.05) and tended to be greater after TW in High HA than Low. The probability of ovulation did not reach significance (0.94 vs 0.75 ±â€¯0.11 for High and Low HA, respectively; P = 0.125), while the probability of pregnancy was greater in High HA than in Low HA (0.9 vs 0.61 ±â€¯0.10; P = 0.07). Ovulation probability exhibited a positive association with IGF-I concentrations at -90 and -40 DC (P < 0.05), but not postpartum. Milk yield did not differ between treatments, while calf weight was heavier at weaning in High HA cows (194 vs 178 ±â€¯3.3 kg; P < 0.05). High HA enhances autumn HI and BCS and generates a carry-over effect on IGF-I concentrations throughout winter and after TW ("metabolic memory"), explaining the better reproductive response. Moderate changes in cows' nutrition during autumn contribute to changes in metabolic status and reproductive outcomes in primiparous cows grazing moderate herbage production native grasslands.

Global grassland degradation poses a significant threat to the sustainable socio-economic development of humanity. However, this trend can be effectively mitigated through scientifically sound and rational grassland improvement measures. Grassland improvement utilizes the theory of pratacultural science, especially the theory of the four production levels of grassland agro-ecosystems, to solve the fundamental contradiction between the seasonal imbalance of grassland supply and livestock demand through integrates a number of improvement techniques. In order to clarify the implementation subject, target and specific measures of grassland improvement and to improve the science and efficiency of management and conservation, we classify grassland improvement into four types according to the target, scale and attributes of grassland and livestock feedback mechanism. Grassland improvement is generally based on one key technology, with multiple technologies used in combination, and synergy or superposition formed between integrated technologies. Individual technologies mainly include enclosure of livestock, reclamation, ripping, overseeding, fertilization, irrigation, fire work and grazing management, while integrated technologies are a combination of two or more technologies. Compared to individual techniques, the integrated approach resulted in a significant enhancement of community aboveground biomass by 17-38% and species richness by 2-24%, with no discernible impact on soil properties in the short term. The establishment of a standardized grazing-based improvement process while adhering to the principles of improvement after utilization, comprehensiveness, standardization and scale consistence to improve the structure and function of grassland ecosystems. Strategy of grassland improvement reassesses "nuisance" species as "citizens" of the ecosystem because they supply productivity, species biodiversity and other ecosystem services, and they can be managed at an unharmful and even benefitful level through identifying the ecological and economic thresholds.
