RESUMO

Human eyes' optical components are misaligned. This study presents comprehensive geometric constructions in the binocular system, with the eye model incorporating the fovea that is displaced from the posterior pole and the lens that is tilted away from the eye's optical axis. It extends their previously considered horizontal misalignment with the vertical components. When the eyes' binocular posture changes, 3D spatial coordinates of the retinal disparity (iso-disparity curves), the subjective vertical horopter, and the eye's torsional orientation transformations are visualized in GeoGebra's simulations. The consequences and functional roles of vertical misalignment of the eye's optical components are explained in the following findings: (1) The classic Helmholtz theory, which states that the subjective vertical retinal meridian inclination to the retinal horizon explains the backward tilt of the perceived vertical horopter, is less relevant when the eye's optical components are misaligned. Instead, the lens vertical tilt provides the retinal vertical criterion that explains the experimentally measured vertical horopter inclination. (2) Listing's law, which originally restricts single-eye torsional positions and has imprecise binocular extensions, is formulated for binocular fixations using Euler's rotation theorem. It, however, replaces Listing's plane, which is defined for eyes looking at infinity, with the eyes muscles' natural tonus resting position corresponding to the abathic distance fixation of empirical straight frontal horopter. This new meaning of Listing's plane provides neurophysiological significance that has remained elusive.

Understanding factors influencing Listeria monocytogenes biofilms aid in developing more effective elimination/prevention strategies. This study examined the effect of temperature (4 °C, 21 °C, 30 °C), materials (stainless steel 316 L with 2B and 2 R finishes, glass, and polypropylene), and slope (0°/horizontal or 90°/vertical) on mono- and dual-species biofilms using two L. monocytogenes strains and one Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain. All biofilms were grown in 10% TSB for 24 h and analyzed using culture-based methods. Additionally, the architecture of monospecies biofilms was studied using fluorescence microscopy. Overall, P. aeruginosa showed higher biofilm formation potential (6.2 log CFU/cm2) than L. monocytogenes (4.0 log CFU/cm2). Temperature greatly influenced P. aeruginosa and varied for L. monocytogenes. The slope predominantly influenced L. monocytogenes monospecies biofilms, with cell counts increasing by up to 2 log CFU/cm2. Surface material had little impact on biofilm formation. The study highlights the varying effects of different parameters on multispecies biofilms and the importance of surface geometry.

Visual performance across the visual fields interacts with visual tasks and visual stimuli, and visual resolution decreases as a function of eccentricity, varying at isoeccentric locations. In this study, we investigated the extent of asymmetry and the rate of change in visual acuity threshold for visual word form (VWF) identification at horizontal and vertical azimuths across the fovea, and at eccentricities of 1°, 2°, 4°, 6° and 8° for 10%, 20%, 40%, and 80% contrast levels, to determine whether and how the eccentricities, meridians, and contrasts modulated the VWF identification acuity threshold. The stimuli were 16 traditional Chinese characters of similar legibility. Participants pressed a key to indicate the character presented, either monocularly or binocularly, at one of 21 randomly selected locations. A staircase procedure was used to determine the threshold, and a multiple linear regression model was used to fit the linear cortical magnification factor (CMF). We found that (1) the asymmetry was most pronounced on the vertical and superior azimuths, (2) the asymmetry between the right and left azimuths was not significant, (3) the CMF was significantly smaller on the vertical azimuth than on the horizontal azimuth, (4) the CMF was smaller on the superior vertical azimuth than on the inferior azimuth, and (5) monocular viewing and low contrast enhanced the CMF difference between azimuths. In conclusion, vertical and horizontal azimuths, location of eccentricity, contrast levels of word symbols, and monocular/binocular viewing have different effects on visual field asymmetry and cortical magnification factors.

Jaw cysts are mainly caused by abnormal tooth development, chronic oral inflammation, or jaw damage, which may lead to facial swelling, deformity, tooth loss, and other symptoms. Due to the diversity and complexity of cyst images, deep-learning algorithms still face many difficulties and challenges. In response to these problems, we present a horizontal-vertical interaction and multiple side-outputs network for cyst segmentation in jaw images. First, the horizontal-vertical interaction mechanism facilitates complex communication paths in the vertical and horizontal dimensions, and it has the ability to capture a wide range of context dependencies. Second, the feature-fused unit is introduced to adjust the network's receptive field, which enhances the ability of acquiring multi-scale context information. Third, the multiple side-outputs strategy intelligently combines feature maps to generate more accurate and detailed change maps. Finally, experiments were carried out on the self-established jaw cyst dataset and compared with different specialist physicians to evaluate its clinical usability. The research results indicate that the Matthews correlation coefficient (Mcc), Dice, and Jaccard of HIMS-Net were 93.61, 93.66 and 88.10% respectively, which may contribute to rapid and accurate diagnosis in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: In previous studies, most research on motion perception have been conducted under background-free condition when the stimulus moved in a plane parallel to the observer. In real-life situations, people's perception of the motion state of objects is usually done under different visual noise. Based on the occlusion paradigm, this study aimed to investigate whether different background information and motion speed affect the trend and accuracy of time-to-collision (TTC) estimation when stimuli move in a plane parallel to the observer. METHODS: Thirty five college students (mean age = 20.94, SD = 2.95, range = 18-28 years) participated in experiment 1, and used a 2 (background orientation: horizontal, vertical) × 3 (motion speed: slow, medium, fast) design to explore the effect of different line segment orientations and motion speed on TTC estimation performance; 36 college students (mean age = 20.81, SD = 2.82, range = 18-28 years) participated in experiment 2, and used a 2 (background dimension: two-dimensional background, three-dimensional background) × 3 (motion speed: slow, medium, fast) design to explore the effect of different background dimensions and motion speed on the performance of TTC estimation. The data were analyzed using SPSS 25.0. RESULTS: The results revealed that: (1) The TTC was underestimated for the slow speed condition and overestimated for the medium and fast speed conditions. (2) The highest accuracy of TTC estimation was obtained for the fast condition. (3) The TTC were overestimated for the vertical background condition and underestimated for the horizontal background condition. (4) Compared to the two-dimensional background, the TTC was overestimated in the three-dimensional background. CONCLUSIONS: Object motion speed affected the TTC estimation performance, and different background information affected the TTC estimation performance when the object moved in a plane parallel to the observer. Meanwhile, the impact of background orientation and motion speed showed significant interactions.

Time and space are intimately related to each other. Previous evidence has shown that stimulus size can affect perceived duration even when size differences are illusory. In the present study, we investigated the effect of visual-spatial illusions on duration judgments in a temporal reproduction paradigm. Specifically, we induced the Ebbinghaus illusion (Exp. 1) and the horizontal-vertical illusion (Exp. 2) during the encoding phase of the target interval or the reproduction phase. The results showed (a) that illusory size affects temporal processing similarly to the way physical size does, (b) that the effect is independent of whether the illusion appeared during encoding or reproduction, and (c) that the interference between size and temporal processing is bidirectional. These results suggest a rather late locus of size-time interference in the processing stream.

The limitation of indoor visible light coverage and the attenuation of its signal when propagating in line-of-sight has seriously affected the stable communication of receiving devices when users move randomly and also aggravated the power consumption of visible light networking systems. According to the above situation, on the basis of the heterogeneous networking of visible light communication (VLC) and RF communication integration, this article proposes a horizontal-vertical collaborative handover strategy based on the communication blind area dwell time (CBD-HVHO). Combining asymmetrically clipped optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (ACO-OFDM) technology with networking handover technology, ACO-OFDM is used to determine the indoor communication blind area by calculating the bit error rate (BER) value at the signal receiver while reducing the multipath interference generated by visible light signals during channel transmission. To achieve this, set the communication blind channel interruption time as the threshold time, compare the communication blind area dwell time with the threshold time, and finally combine the horizontal and vertical collaborative handover strategies based on the communication blind area dwell time. The simulation results show that the handover probability is 0.009, the average number of handovers is 1.006, and the average network throughput is 195.2826 Mbps. Compared with the previously proposed immediate vertical handover (I-VHO) scheme and the dwell vertical handover (D-VHO) scheme, the communication stability is significantly improved, and the power consumption of the network system is reduced to a certain extent.

A series of model tests were conducted to investigate the bearing capacity and reinforced mechanism of a horizontal-vertical (H-V) geogrid-reinforced foundation. The bearing capacities of the unreinforced foundation, the conventional geogrid, and the H-V geogrid-reinforced foundation were compared. The parameters, including the length of the H-V geogrid, the vertical geogrid height, the depth of the top layer, and the number of H-V geogrid layers, are discussed. Through experiments, it was found that the optimal length of H-V geogrid is around 4B, the optimal vertical geogrid height is approximately 0.6B, and the optimal depth of the top H-V geogrid layer is between 0.33B and 1B. The optimal number of H-V geogrid layers is 2. The result also indicates that the bearing capacity of H-V geogrid is almost 1.7 times greater than that of conventional geogrid. Additionally, the maximum top subsidence of H-V geogrid-reinforced foundation decreased by 13.63% compared to that of conventional geogrid-reinforced foundation. Under the same settlement, the bearing capacity ratio of two H-V geogrid-reinforced foundation layers is 75.28% higher than that of one layer. The results also demonstrate that the vertical elements of H-V geogrid interlock the sand from being displaced under the applied load and redistribute the surcharge over a wider area, thereby increasing the shear strength and improving the bearing capacity of an H-V geogrid-reinforced foundation.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between widely used otolith function tests: the Subjective Visual Horizontal (SVH) and Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials (VEMP). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 301 patients who underwent SVH, ocular and cervical VEMP (oVEMP and cVEMP) tests on the same day. Correlations between the mean SVH tilt and amplitude asymmetry ratios for bone-conducted (BC) oVEMP and air-conducted (AC) cVEMP were examined. Diagnoses included vestibular neuritis, stroke, vestibular migraine, Meniere's disease, sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) and vestibular schwannoma. RESULTS: SVH results were concordant with the oVEMP in 64% of cases and the cVEMP in 51%. Across all patients, SVH demonstrated a significant moderate correlation with BC oVEMP amplitude asymmetry ratios (r = 0.55, p < 0.001) and a weak correlation with AC cVEMP amplitude asymmetry ratios (r = 0.35, p < 0.001). A stronger correlation between SVH and oVEMPs was observed in patients with vestibular neuritis (r = 0.67, p < 0.001) and SSNHL (r = 0.76, p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: SVH correlates better with oVEMP than cVEMP symmetry. SIGNIFICANCE: This finding reinforces the hypothesis of a common utricular origin for both SVH and oVEMPs which is distinct from the saccular origin of cVEMPs.

Partial replications of experiments reported by Cai et al. (Attention, Perception, & Psychophysics, 79(4), 1217-1226, 2017) on the so-called Horizontal-vertical illusion confirmed that dissecting L-figures into two separate lines yields greater overestimation of (near-)verticals than do intact Ls. However, contrary to Cai et al.'s findings, which had been obtained with a staircase procedure, with the method of constant stimuli, the amount of illusion was much smaller. This divergence is explained by the self-reinforcing nature of adjustment procedures. Another finding, already reported by Cormack and Cormack (Perception & Psychophysics, 16(2), 208-212, 1974), that obtuse angles between an L's lines yield greater bias than acute angles, was also replicated in one experiment but tended to be reversed in another. Mixing dissected, upright and top-down inverted Ls and laterally oriented Ts, both with tilted lines, within one experiment confirmed that the bias for Ts is opposite to the one for Ls: For Ts, the effect of (virtual) bisection dominates, yielding an overestimation of the length of the undivided line, whereas for Ls, the horizontal-vertical anisotropy dominates, yielding an overestimation of the length of the vertical line. The differential gap effects can possibly be explained by interactions within the neural substrate between orientation-sensitive and end-inhibited neurons, and the method effects by perceptual learning.

Humans perceive 3D shapes even from 2D images. A slant can be perceived from images of slanted rectangular objects, which include texture gradients and linear perspective contours. How does the visual system integrate and utilize these pictorial depth cues? A new visual illusion that provides some insights into this issue was examined. A box-like object with disk figures drawn on its upper surface was rendered in a linear perspective image. The length of the object's upper surface side line was overestimated, probably due to the foreshortened disks serving as slant cues. This illusory effect occurred even when observers estimated the line length on the image plane, suggesting that the slant perception from the disks was mandatory. Five experiments revealed that multiple depth cues were utilized for the slant perception; the aspect ratio of the disks, texture gradients, trapezium/parallelogram contours, and the side surfaces of the box-like object. However, foreshortened disks outside the object were not utilized as depth cues. These results suggested that various depth cues belonging to the target object are integrated for the slant perception.

As an important part of urban green infrastructure, the landscape effect of the urban waterfront green space varies, and sometimes, the green space with an excellent landscape aesthetic value fails to serve the needs of most citizens. This seriously affects the construction of a green ecological civilization and the implementation of the concept of "common prosperity" in China. Based on multi-source data, this study took the Qiantang River Basin as an example, selected 12 representative waterfront green spaces along the river as the research objects, and used qualitative and quantitative analysis methods to determine the landscape aesthetic value of the research area from the different dimensions of space, psychology, and physiology. We examined the relationship between each dimension so as to objectively and comprehensively reflect the landscape value characteristics of the waterfront green space in the study area and provide a reasonable theoretical framework and practical development path for future urban waterfront green space landscape design. We obtained the following results: (1) The results of the spatial dimension research indicated that the spatial value index of the waterfront green space in the study area was three-dimensional space > vertical space > horizontal space, and the overall spatial value was low; Qianjiang Ecological Park obtained the highest value (0.5473), and Urban Balcony Park obtained the lowest value (0.4619). (2) The results of the psychological dimension indicated that people's perceptions of the waterfront green space in the study area were relatively weak, mainly focusing on visual perception, but the waterfront green space with a relative emotional value greater than one accounted for 75%, and the overall recognition of the landscape was high. (3) The results of the behavioral dimension showed that the overall heat of the waterfront green space in the study area was insufficient (1.3719-7.1583), which was mainly concentrated in low-heat levels, and the population density was unevenly distributed (0.0014-0.0663), which was mainly concentrated in the medium-density level. The main purpose of users was to visit, and they stayed an average of 1.5 h. (4) The results of the coupling coordination analysis of the spatial-psychological-behavioral dimensions showed that the landscape value of the waterfront green space in the study area presented a form of 'high coupling degree and low coordination degree'.

The horizontal-vertical illusion (HVI) has been proposed as a method to increase the perceived height of steps, increase toe clearance and prevent falls. High contrast vertical stripes are placed on the step riser abutting a horizontal edge-highlighter creating 'T' junctions which are thought to promote the illusion. Various configurations of the HVI were tested including luminance gratings (L) and second-order modulations of contrast (CM), spatial frequency (FM) and orientation (OM). Observers were asked to compare the apparent height of gratings with that of either filled, unmodulated rectangles or unfilled rectangles. Rectangles were presented alone or as part of a step with a highlighter. In some conditions highlighters matched the properties of the grating; in others or not. In one critical experiment, the HVI was compared for steps with highlighters that were separated from the riser by a thin line and those where the risers and highlighters were continuous. All gratings except FM appeared taller when presented in the step configuration with a continuous, matching highlighter. This effect was greatly reduced when a thin line separated the grating from the highlighter and abolished for mis-matched highlighters and risers. In the rectangle conditions, all cues appeared taller than blank rectangles and L and CM appeared taller than filled-unmodulated rectangles. In conclusion, second-order cues may be useful for inducing the HVI onto steps. However, the ability of vertical stripes and edge-highlighters to accentuate perceived step height may be due to aggregation of the highlighter into the grating rather than the normal horizontal-vertical illusion.

Performance as a function of polar angle at isoeccentric locations across the visual field is known as a performance field (PF) and is characterized by two asymmetries: the HVA (horizontal-vertical anisotropy) and VMA (vertical meridian asymmetry). Exogenous (involuntary) spatial attention does not affect the shape of the PF, improving performance similarly across polar angle. Here we investigated whether endogenous (voluntary) spatial attention, a flexible mechanism, can attenuate these perceptual asymmetries. Twenty participants performed an orientation discrimination task while their endogenous attention was either directed to the target location or distributed across all possible locations. The effects of attention were assessed either using the same stimulus contrast across locations or equating difficulty across locations using individually titrated contrast thresholds. In both experiments, endogenous attention similarly improved performance at all locations, maintaining the canonical PF shape. Thus, despite its voluntary nature, like exogenous attention, endogenous attention cannot alleviate perceptual asymmetries at isoeccentric locations.

INTRODUCTION: Tripping on stairs results from insufficient foot to step edge clearance and can often lead to a fall in older adults. A stair horizontal-vertical illusion is suggested to increase the perceived riser height of a step and increase foot clearance when stepping up. However, this perception-action link has not been empirically determined in older adults. Previous findings suggesting a perception-action effect have also been limited to a single step or a three-step staircase. On larger staircases, somatosensory learning of step heights may be greater which could override the illusory effect on the top step. Furthermore, the striped nature of the existing stair horizontal-vertical illusion is associated with visual stress and may not be aesthetically suitable for use on public stairs. These issues need resolving before potential future implementation on public stairs. METHODS: Experiment 1. A series of four computer-based perception tests were conducted in older (N = 14: 70 ± 6 years) and young adults (N = 42: 24 ± 3 years) to test the influence of different illusion designs on stair riser height estimation. Participants compared images of stairs, with horizontal-vertical illusions or arbitrary designs on the bottom step, to a plain stair with different bottom step riser heights and selected the stair they perceived to have the tallest bottom riser. Horizontal-vertical illusions included a previously developed design and versions with modified spatial frequencies and mark space ratios. Perceived riser height differences were assessed between designs and between age groups. Experiment 2. To assess the perception-action link, sixteen older (70 ± 7 years) and fifteen young (24 ± 3 years) adults ascended a seven-step staircase with and without horizontal-vertical illusions tested in experiment 1 placed onto steps one and seven. Foot clearances were measured over each step. To determine whether changes in perception were linked to changes in foot clearance, perceived riser heights for each horizontal-vertical illusion were assessed using the perception test from experiment 1 before and after stair ascent. Additional measures to characterise stair safety included vertical foot clearance, margins of stability, foot overhang, stair speed, and gaze duration, which were assessed over all seven steps. RESULTS: Experiment 1. All horizontal-vertical illusion designs led to significant increases in the perceived riser height in both young and older adults (12-19% increase) with no differences between age groups. Experiment 2. On step 7, each horizontal-vertical illusion led to an increase in vertical foot clearance for young (up to 0.8 cm) and older adults (up to 2.1 cm). On step 1 significant increases in vertical foot clearance were found for a single horizontal-vertical illusion when compared to plain (1.19 cm increase). The horizontal-vertical illusions caused significant increases in the perceived riser height (young; 13% increase, older; 11% increase) with no differences between illusion design, group or before and after stair ascent. No further differences were found for the remaining variables and steps. CONCLUSION: Results indicate a perception-action link between perceived riser height and vertical foot clearance in response to modified versions of the horizontal-vertical illusion in both young and older adults. This was shown with no detriment to additional stair safety measures. Further evaluating these illusions on private/public stairs, especially those with inconsistently taller steps, may be beneficial to help improve stair safety for older adults.

Armenia, as a post-Soviet country, has not been included in cross-cultural studies, since it is not viewed as a typically collectivistic or individualistic society. Objective: To investigate how promotion and prevention regulatory foci can predict subjective well-being, as conditioned by individualistic-collectivistic cultural orientations within Armenian society, and to reveal the links between regulatory focus and subjective well-being within Armenian culture, considering the effect of personality-culture fit. Design: We carried out two studies. In Study 1, regression analysis was conducted to reveal how promotion and prevention foci predicted different aspects of subjective well-being. In Study 2, mediation analysis was conducted to reveal how vertical and horizontal collectivism and individualism mediate the linkage between a promotion or prevention focus, and different aspects of subjective well-being. Results: Regression analysis replicated the findings of other studies, showing that promotion focus has a great predictive role in subjective well-being, while prevention focus neither predicts or obviates different aspects of subjective well-being. Mediation analysis indicated that vertical collectivism had a partially mediating effect on the linkage between promotion and cognitive, emotional, and psychological aspects of subjective well-being. Vertical individualism had a mediating effect on the linkage between prevention and social well-being. Conclusion: Vertical collectivism is a consistent pattern in people experiencing subjective well-being when they behave in a promotion-based way in different settings in the Armenian cultural context.

Hemispatial neglect, after unilateral lesions to parietal brain areas, is characterized by an inability to respond to unexpected stimuli in contralesional space. As the visual field's horizontal meridian is most severely affected, the brain networks controlling visuospatial processes might be tuned explicitly to this axis. We investigated such a potential directional tuning in the dorsal and ventral frontoparietal attention networks, with a particular focus on attentional reorientation. We used an orientation-discrimination task where a spatial precue indicated the target position with 80% validity. Healthy participants (n = 29) performed this task in two runs and were required to (re-)orient attention either only along the horizontal or the vertical meridian, while fMRI and behavioral measures were recorded. By using a general linear model for behavioral and fMRI data, dynamic causal modeling for effective connectivity, and other predictive approaches, we found strong statistical evidence for a reorientation effect for horizontal and vertical runs. However, neither neural nor behavioral measures differed between vertical and horizontal reorienting. Moreover, models from one run successfully predicted the cueing condition in the respective other run. Our results suggest that activations in the dorsal and ventral attention networks represent higher-order cognitive processes related to spatial attentional (re-)orientating that are independent of directional tuning and that unilateral attention deficits after brain damage are based on disrupted interactions between higher-level attention networks and sensory areas.

We aimed at showing that children are able to identify and draw a line of best fit through a cloud of points according to the concept of linear regression. A sample of 72 children in third and fourth primary school grades were given two different tasks. In a first task, 10 different sheets with three illustrations of the same scatterplot with different lines of regression to choose from were presented. In a second task, scatterplots were given and children were asked to draw a line of best fit with pencil and ruler. In the first task bisector regression was preferred (χ2 = 15.21, df = 4, p = .004), whereas in the second conventional regression ordinary least squares (X|Y) was favored (χ2 = 27.14, df = 4, p < .001). In summary, the preference of the traditional regression model using a minimization in the vertical dimension was only partly supported by our data.

OBJECTIVELumboperitoneal (LP) shunts have a role not only in pseudotumor cerebri, but also in patients with slit-like ventricles who are treated with CSF shunting on a chronic basis. Hesitation to utilize LP shunts is based on previous conventional beliefs including the tendency for overdrainage, difficulties accessing the shunt to tap or revise, and risk of progressive cerebellar tonsillar herniation. The authors hypothesized that the use of horizontal-vertical (HV) valves may reduce the risk of these complications, particularly overdrainage and development of Chiari malformation.METHODSAll pediatric cases involving patients treated with an LP shunt at the Children's Hospital of Michigan were reviewed in this retrospective case series. A total of 143 patients with hydrocephalus were treated with LP shunts from 1997-2015 (follow-up range 8 months-8 years, median 4.2 years). Patients with pseudotumor cerebri underwent placement of an LP shunt as a primary procedure. In patients with slit ventricles from chronically treated hydrocephalus or repeated shunt malfunctions from proximal catheter obstruction, a lumbar drain was inserted to assess candidacy for conversion to an LP shunt. In patients who tolerated the lumbar drain and demonstrated communication of the ventricles with the spinal cisterns, treatment was converted to an LP shunt. All patients included in the series had undergone initial shunt placement between birth and age 16 years.RESULTSIn 30% of patients (n = 43), LP shunts were placed as the initial shunt treatment; in 70% (n = 100), treatment was converted to LP shunts from ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunts. The patients' age at insertion of or conversion to an LP shunt ranged from 1 to 43 years (median 8.5 years). Of the patients with clear pre-LP and post-LP shunt follow-up imaging, none were found to develop an acquired Chiari malformation. In patients with pre-existing tonsillar ectopia, no progression was noted on follow-up MRIs of the brain in these patients after LP shunt insertion. In our LP shunt case series, no patient presented with acute deterioration from shunt malfunction.CONCLUSIONSConversion to an LP shunt may minimize acute deterioration from shunt malfunction and decrease morbidity of repeated procedures in patients with chronically shunt-treated hydrocephalus and small ventricles. In comparison to previously published case series of LP shunt treatment, the use of LP shunts in conjunction with HV valves may decrease the overall risk of cerebellar tonsillar herniation. The use of an LP shunt may be an alternative in the management of slit ventricles when VP shunting repeatedly fails.

: Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can be important drivers of population dynamics because of their negative effects on reproduction. However, screening for STDs, especially in wildlife populations, is widely neglected. Using the promiscuous, polygynandrous European badger ( Meles meles) as a model, we investigated the presence and prevalence of herpesviruses (HVs) in a wild, high-density population and assessed potential differences in somatic fitness and female reproductive condition between infected and uninfected individuals. We collected n=98 genital swabs from 71 females (51 adults and 20 cubs) and 27 males (26 adults and 1 cub) during spring and summer 2015. Using a PCR specific for a mustelid α-HV, all genital-swab samples tested negative. In a panherpes PCR, a γ-HV was found in 55% (54/98; 39 adults and 15 cubs), identified as mustelid gammaherpesvirus 1 (MusGHV-1) using DNA sequencing. This contrasts with the results of a previous study, which reported MusGHV-1 in 98% (354/361) of blood samples taken from 218 badgers in the same population using PCR. The detection of MusHV-1 in the female reproductive tract strongly indicates the potential for a horizontal and, likely also a vertical, route of transmission. Our results suggest a potential linkage of genital HVs and impaired future reproductive success in females, but because reproductive failure can have many reasons in badgers, the causative link of this negative relationship remains to be investigated.
