In this study, advancements are presented in the in-situ detection of delamination reinitiation from Barely Visible Impact Damage (BVID) in composite materials, utilizing enhancements in Digital Image Correlation (DIC) techniques during a Compression After Impact (CAI) test. The study measured strain fields in the longitudinal, transverse, and shear directions, focusing specifically on the point of highest out-of-plane displacement to identify the onset of delamination propagation from BVID sites generated at different impact energy levels. By correlating the measured strains with the peak out-of-plane displacement, a unique determination of onset damage reinitiation associated with BVID during CAI testing was achieved. This method introduces a refined in-situ assessment technique for structural integrity, allowing for the early detection of critical damage propagation in composite materials.

The study of visualization of impact damage of fruit under different thicknesses of buffer materials can provide more efficient transportation and packaging solutions, and thus the economic losses caused by fruit damage can be reduced. Pearl cotton (EPE) is commonly used as a buffer material in the market, and the impact damage behavior of honey peaches under different thicknesses of EPE buffer material was studied by using the finite element method. Firstly, the damage area, maximum contact force and damage volume during the collision of honey peaches with EPE materials of different thicknesses (2, 4, and 6 mm) were obtained by the single pendulum device, and then the Modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio of peach flesh were obtained by compression test. Finally, the finite element model of honey peach was built and the collision simulations were performed. The results of the study showed that the values of mechanical parameters of honey peach decreased with the increase of the thickness of the buffer material. When the collision angle was below 60°, the honey peaches were not damaged in the collision with the EPE material with a thickness of 4 mm or more. By comparing the tested values with the simulated values, it was found that the errors of the damage area, damage volume and maximum contact force were less than 19.71%, 26.82%, and 25.88%, respectively. The study not only proves the possibility of the finite element method in the quantitative prediction of honey peaches damage but also provides rational support for the packaging design of honey peaches.

Traditional inspection methods often fall short in detecting defects or damage in fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite structures, which can compromise their performance and safety over time. A prime example is barely visible impact damage (BVID) caused by out-of-plane loadings such as indentation and low-velocity impact that can considerably reduce the residual strength. Therefore, developing advanced visual inspection techniques is essential for early detection of defects, enabling proactive maintenance and extending the lifespan of composite structures. This study explores the viability of using novel bio-inspired hybrid composite sensors for detecting BVID in laminated FRP composite structures. Drawing inspiration from the colour-changing mechanisms found in nature, hybrid composite sensors composed of thin-ply glass and carbon layers are designed and attached to the surface of laminated FRP composites exposed to transverse loading. A comprehensive experimental characterisation, including quasi-static indentation and low-velocity impact tests alongside non-destructive evaluations such as ultrasonic C-scan and visual inspection, is conducted to assess the sensors' efficacy in detecting BVID. Moreover, a comparison between the two transverse loading types, static indentation and low-velocity impact, is presented. The results suggest that integrating sensors into composite structures has a minimal effect on mechanical properties such as structural stiffness and energy absorption, while substantially improving damage visibility. Additionally, the influence of fibre orientation of the sensing layer on sensor performance is evaluated, and correlations between internal and surface damage are demonstrated.

Room temperature drop hammer impact and compression after impact (CAI) experiments were conducted on carbon fiber-epoxy resin (CF/EP) composites to investigate the variation in impact load and absorbed energy, as well as to determine the residual compressive strength of CF/EP composites following impact damage. Industrial CT scanning was employed to observe the damage morphology after both impact and compression, aiding in the study of impact-damage and compression-failure mechanisms. The results indicate that, under the impact load, the surface of a CF/EP composite exhibits evident cratering as the impact energy increases, while cracks form along the length direction on the back surface. The residual compressive strength exhibits an inverse relationship with the impact energy. Impact damage occurring at an energy lower than 45 J results in end crushing during the compression of CF/EP composites, whereas energy exceeding 45 J leads to the formation of long cracks spanning the entire width of the specimen, primarily distributed symmetrically along the center of the specimen.

To reduce the cost of developing composite aeronautical structures, manufacturers and university researchers are increasingly using "virtual testing" methods. Then, finite element methods (FEMs) are intensively used to calculate mechanical behavior and to predict the damage to fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites under impact loading, which is a crucial design aspect for aeronautical composite structures. But these FEMs require a lot of knowledge and a significant number of IT resources to run. Therefore, artificial intelligence could be an interesting way of sizing composites in terms of impact damage tolerance. In this research, the authors propose a methodology and deep learning-based approach to predict impact damage to composites. The data are both collected from the literature and created using an impact simulation performed using an FEM. The data augmentation method is also proposed to increase the data number from 149 to 2725. Firstly, a CNN model is built and optimized, and secondly, an aggregation of two CNN architectures is proposed. The results show that the use of an aggregation of two CNNs provides better performance than a single CNN. Finally, the aggregated CNN model prediction demonstrates the potential for CNN models to accelerate composite design by showing a 0.15 mm precision for all the length measurements, an average delaminated surface error of 56 mm2, and an error rate of 7% for the prediction of the presence of delamination.

An integrated analysis of the transcriptome and metabolome was conducted to investigate the underlying mechanisms of apple fruit response to impact damage stress. During the post-damage storage, a total of 124 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified, which were mainly annotated in 13 pathways, including phenylpropanoid biosynthesis. Besides, 175 differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs), including 142 up-regulated and 33 down-regulated metabolites, exhibited significant alteration after impact damage. The DEGs and DEMs were simultaneously annotated in 7 metabolic pathways, including flavonoid biosynthesis. Key genes in the volatile esters and flavonoid biosynthesis pathways were revealed, which may play a crucial role in the coping mechanisms of apple fruit under impact damage stress. Moreover, 13 ABC transporters were significantly upregulated, indicating that ABC transporters may contribute to the transportation of secondary metabolites associated with response to impact damage stress. The results may elucidate the comprehension of metabolic networks and molecular mechanisms in apple fruits that have undergone impact damage.

Damage detection and localization based on ultrasonic guided waves revealed to be promising for structural health monitoring and nondestructive testing. However, the use of a piezoelectric sensor's network to locate and image damaged areas in composite structures requires a number of precautions including the consideration of anisotropy and baseline signals. The lack of information related to these two parameters drastically deteriorates the imaging performance of numerous signal processing methods. To avoid such deterioration, the present contribution proposes different methods to build baseline signals in different types of composites. Baseline signals are first constructed from a numerical simulation model using the previously determined elasticity tensor of the structure. Since the latter tensor is not always easy to obtain especially in the case of anisotropic materials, a second PZT network is used in order to obtain signals related to Lamb waves propagating in different directions. Waveforms are then translated according to a simplified theoretical propagation model of Lamb waves in homogeneous structures. The application of the different methods on transversely isotropic, unidirectional and quasi-transversely isotropic composites allows to have satisfactory images that well represent the damaged areas with the help of the delay-and-sum algorithm.

Muscle injuries frequently happen during sports activities and exercise, which could have serious consequences if not diagnosed and treated promptly. This research aims to investigate the quasi-static and dynamic responses of over 30 fresh frog semitendinosus muscles utilizing Split Hopkinson Pressure Bars (SHPB) and a material testing system under strain rates between 0.001 ~ 200 s-1. To accommodate the special shape of muscle-tendon-bone samples, PLA clampers were produced by the 3D printer to properly hold and prevent slipping during the testing process. The mechanical characteristics of the whole muscle bundle, including Young's modulus and stress-strain curve, are illustrated at various strain rates. The findings showed that the muscle properties were sensitive to strain rate when under passive deformation. Both maximum stress and Young's modulus increased with the rise of strain rate, and modulus at 200 s-1 can be as high as 10 times compared with quasi-static conditions.

Composite materials are one of the primary structural components in most current transportation applications, such as the aerospace industry. Composite material diagnostics is a promising area in the fight against structural damage in aircraft and spaceships. Detection and diagnostic technologies often provide analysts with a valuable and rapid mechanism to monitor the health and safety of composite materials. Although many attempts have been made to develop damage detection techniques and make operations more efficient, there is still a need to develop/improve existing methods. Pulsed thermography (PT) technology was used in this study to obtain healthy and defective data sets from custom-designed composite samples having similar dimensions but different thicknesses (1.6 and 3.8). Ten carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) panels were tested. The samples were subjected to impact damage of various energy levels, ranging from 4 to 12 J. Two different methods have been applied to detect and classify the damage to the composite structures. The first applied method is the statistical analysis, where seven different statistical criteria have been calculated. The final results have proved the possibility of detecting the damaged area in most cases. However, for a more accurate detection technique, a machine learning method was applied to thermal images; specifically, the Cube Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithm was selected. The prediction accuracy of the proposed classification models was calculated within a confusion matrix based on the dataset patterns representing the healthy and defective areas. The classification results ranged from 78.7% to 93.5%, and these promising results are paving the way to develop an automated model to efficiently evaluate the damage to composite materials based on the non-distractive testing (NDT) technique.

This study was devoted to the development of novel devices and a methodology intended for generating ultrasonic waves in an air medium by using atmospheric pressure gas discharge. In the proposed electrode system, the discharge process was accompanied by the generation of acoustic waves on the emitter surface and, consequently, in the ambient air. The gas discharge emitter vibrations were analyzed by applying the technique of Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometry (SLDV). It was shown that the magnitude of displacements matched the corresponding characteristics of classical piezoelectric and magnetostrictive transducers. The use of the Fast Fourier transform procedure supplied amplitude-frequency spectra of vibrations generated by the gas discharge emitter. The amplitude-frequency spectrum analysis showed that the proposed emitter was able to generate acoustic waves in the air with frequencies from 50 Hz to 100 kHz, and such a device can be used for the nondestructive testing (NDT) of materials. The results of the statistical analysis of vibration displacements in the repetitive pulsed mode were discussed. A non-stable characteristic of the vibration displacement of the emitter membrane was demonstrated. The parameters of such instability were associated with the features of gas discharge processes. In the experiments, the proposed gas discharge emitter was used in combination with SLDV for inspecting carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer composites. The experiments demonstrated the possibility of using an air-coupled gas discharge transmitter to generate acoustic waves in NDT applications.

In the rotational moulding industry, non-used, scrap, and waste purge materials have tremendous potential to be reprocessed and applied in skin-foam-skin sandwich structures to replace and reduce the use of virgin polymers. This approach not only encourages the re-use of these waste materials but also significantly contributes to reduce environmental impacts associated with the use of virgin polymers in this sector. The demand of rotationally moulded sandwich structures is rapidly increasing in automotive, marine, and storage tanks, where investigating their impact and after-impact responses are crucial. Hence, this study investigated the low-velocity impact (LVI) and flexure-after-impact (FAI) responses of rotationally moulded sandwich structures manufactured using reprocessed materials. Results obtained from LVI induced damage at two different incident energy levels (15 J, 30 J), and the residual flexural strength of impacted structures evaluated by three-points bending tests were compared with non-reprocessed sandwich structures (virgin materials). The impact damage progression mechanism was characterized using the X-ray micro-computer-tomography technique. Reprocessed sandwiches demonstrated 91% and 66% post-impact residual strength at 15 J and 30 J respectively, while for non-reprocessed sandwiches, these values were calculated as 93% and 88%. Although reprocessed sandwich structures showed a lower performance over non-reprocessed sandwiches, they have a strong potential to be used in sandwich structures for various applications.

The present paper investigates the impact behaviour of both pristine carbon-fibre-reinforced-plastic (CFRP) composite laminates and repaired CFRP laminates. For the patch-repaired CFRP specimen, the pristine CFRP panel specimen has been damaged by cutting out a central disc of the CFRP material and then repaired using an adhesively bonded patch of CFRP to cover the hole. Drop-weight, impact tests are performed on these two types of specimens and a numerical elastic-plastic, three-dimensional damage model is developed and employed to simulate the impact behaviour of both types of specimen. This numerical model is meso-scale in nature and assumes that cracks initiate in the CFRP at a nano-scale, in the matrix around fibres, and trigger sub-micrometre intralaminar matrix cracks during the impact event. These localized regions of intralaminar cracking then lead to interlaminar, i.e. delamination, cracking between the neighbouring plies which possess different fibre orientations. These meso-scale, intralaminar and interlaminar, damage processes are modelled using the numerical finite-element analysis model with each individual ply treated as a continuum. Good agreement is found between the results from the experimental studies and the predictions from the numerical simulations. This paper aims to explore the fatigue life estimation approach of welded joints with precrack under coupled impact and fatigue loading, and the base metal is dissimilar 5083H111 and 5754 aluminum alloy. Impact tests are first carried out on the dissimilar lightweight materials welded joint with precrack located in the middle of the specimen, and a stress and strain field is obtained to determine the fatigue damage model parameters by using finite element dynamic analysis to simulate the impact process. Based, on the S-N curve of welded joints, the predicted life expectancy is found to be inconsistent with the experimental results. According to the continuum damage mechanics, the lifetime assessment model is presented to calculate both impact and fatigue damage. The estimated results agree well with the experimental ones.

The fourth dataset dedicated to the Open Guided Waves platform [1] presented in this work aims at a carbon fiber composite plate with an additional omega stringer at constant temperature conditions. The dataset provides full ultrasonic guided wavefields. Two types of signals were used for guided wave excitation, namely chirp signal and tone-burst signal. The chirp signal had a frequency range of 20-500 kHz. The tone-burst signals had a form of sine modulated by Hann window with 5 cycles and carrier frequencies 16.5 kHz, 50 kHz, 100 kHz, 200 kHz, 300 kHz. The piezoceramic actuator used for this purpose was attached to the center of the stringer side surface of the core plate. Three scenarios are provided with this setup: (1) wavefield measurements without damage, (2) wavefield measurements with a local stringer debond and (3) wavefield measurements with a large stringer debond. The defects were caused by impacts performed from the backside of the plate. As result, the stringer feet debonds locally which was verified with conventional ultrasound measurements.

When impact damage occurs in carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) structures, it is barely visible but may cause significant degradation in the mechanical properties of the structure. Hence, a structural health monitoring (SHM) system that can be installed in CFRP mobility structures and is sensitive to impact damage is needed. In this study, we attempted to establish an SHM system based on ultrasonic guided waves, which are generated by inputting a broadband chirp signal into a film-like piezoelectric actuator. The relationship between impact damage size and maximum time-of-flight (ToF) delay was investigated for three types of CFRP plates: woven, non-woven, and hybrid laminates. As a result, it was found that the maximum ToF delay increased linearly with an increase in the damage size for all CFRP laminates. Moreover, the amplitude of the A0 mode was found to be significantly affected by the damage length in the wave propagation direction. Thus, this SHM method using chirp ultrasonic waves can quantitatively evaluate the size and extent of the impact damage in CFRP laminates.

Strawberries are susceptible to mechanical damage. The detection of damaged strawberries by their volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can avoid the deficiencies of manual observation and spectral imaging technologies that cannot detect packaged fruits. In the present study, the detection of strawberries with impact damage is investigated using electronic nose (e-nose) technology. The results show that the e-nose technology can be used to detect strawberries that have suffered impact damage. The best model for detecting the extent of impact damage had a residual predictive deviation (RPD) value of 2.730, and the correct rate of the best model for identifying the damaged strawberries was 97.5%. However, the accuracy of the prediction of the occurrence time of impact was poor, and the RPD value of the best model was only 1.969. In addition, the gas chromatography-mass spectrophotometry analysis further shows that the VOCs of the strawberries changed after suffering impact damage, which was the reason why the e-nose technology could detect the damaged fruit. The above results show that the mechanical force of impact caused changes in the VOCs of strawberries and that it is possible to detect strawberries that have suffered impact damage using e-nose technology.

The problem of characterizing the structural residual life is one of the most challenging issues of the damage tolerance concept currently applied in modern aviation. Considering the complexity of the internal architecture of composite structures widely applied for aircraft components nowadays, as well as the additional complexity related to the appearance of barely visible impact damage, prediction of the structural residual life is a demanding task. In this paper, the authors proposed a method based on detection of structural damage after low-velocity impact loading and its classification with respect to types of acting stress on constituents of composite structures using the developed processing algorithm based on segmentation of 3D X-ray computed tomograms using the rebmix package, real-oriented dual-tree wavelet transform and supporting image processing procedures. The presented algorithm allowed for accurate distinguishing of defined types of damage from X-ray computed tomograms with strong robustness to noise and measurement artifacts. The processing was performed on experimental data obtained from X-ray computed tomography of a composite structure with barely visible impact damage, which allowed better understanding of fracture mechanisms in such conditions. The gained knowledge will allow for a more accurate simulation of structural damage in composite structures, which will provide higher accuracy in predicting structural residual life.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the moisture absorption behaviour and its influence on the mechanical properties of newly developed sandwich biocomposites with flax fibre-reinforced poly-lactic acid (PLA) face sheets and soft cork as the core material. Three different types of sandwich biocomposite laminates comprised of different layup configurations, namely, non-woven flax/PLA (Sample A), non-woven flax/PLA and cork as core (Sample B) and non-woven flax/paper backing/PLA, cork as core (Sample C), were fabricated. In order to evaluate the influence of moisture ingress on the mechanical properties, the biocomposites were immersed in seawater for a period of 1200 h. The biocomposites (both dry and water immersed) were then subjected to tensile, flexural and low-velocity falling weight impact tests. It was observed from the experimental results that the moisture uptake significantly influenced the mechanical properties of the biocomposites. The presence of the cork and paper in sample C made it more susceptible to water absorption, reaching a value of 34.33%. The presence of cork in the core also has a considerable effect on the mechanical, as well as energy dissipation, behaviours. The results of sample A exhibited improved mechanical performance in both dry and wet conditions compared to samples B and C. Sample A exhibits 32.6% more tensile strength and 81.4% more flexural strength in dry conditions than that in sample C. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray micro-CT images revealed that the failure modes observed are a combination of matrix cracking, core crushing and face core debonding. The results from this study suggest that flax/PLA sandwich biocomposites can be used in various lightweight applications with improved environmental benefits.

Glass fiber-reinforced polymer structures (GFRPS) are widely used in civil and mechanical fields due to their light weight and corrosion resistance. However, these structures are prone to damage with very-low-energy impacts. The reliability of such structures is of prime importance before their installation and usage. This study aimed to identify, visualize, localize, and verify multiple barely visible impact damage (BVID) in a GFRPS using a combination of guided waves (GW)-based online structural health monitoring (SHM) and thermal strain-based nondestructive testing (NDT) approaches. Global NDT techniques like the use of a laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV) and digital image correlation (DIC) were used in the experimental analysis. The effectiveness of the experimental LDV-GW process was also checked numerically with the spectral element method (SEM). A threshold-based baseline free SHM approach to effectively localize the damages was proposed along with quick DIC verification of composite structure with thermal loading based on short-pulse heating as an excitation source. This study analyzed combined experimental- and numerical-based SHM-NDT methods in characterizing the multiple BVIDs located in a GFRPS.

There has been a lot of interest in understanding the low-velocity impact (LVI) response of thermoplastic composites. However, little research has focussed on studying the impact behaviour of non-crimp fabric (NCF)-based fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the LVI responses of two types of non-crimp fabric (NCF) carbon fibre reinforced thermoplastic laminated composites that have been considered attractive in the automotive and aerospace industry: (i) T700/polyamide 6.6 (PA6.6) and (ii) T700/polyphenylene sulphide (PPS). Each carbon/thermoplastic type was impacted at three different energy levels (40, 100 and 160 J), which were determined to achieve three degrees of penetrability, i.e., no penetration, partial penetration and full penetration, respectively. Two distinct non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques ((i) ultrasonic C-scanning and (ii) X-ray tomography) were used to assess the extent of damage after impact. The laminated composite plates were subjected to an out-of-plane, localised impact using an INSTRON® drop-weight tower with a hemispherical impactor measuring 16 mm in diameter. The time histories of force, deflection and velocity are reported and discussed. A nonlinear finite element model of the LVI phenomenon was developed using a finite element (FE) solver LS-DYNA® and validated against the experimental observations. The extent of damage observed and level of impact energy absorption calculated on both the experiment and FE analysis are compared and discussed.
