RESUMO

We reevaluate acute retinal pigment epitheliitis (ARPE) first described by Krill and Deutman in 1972, integrating a meticulous literature review with advanced multimodal imaging analyses. Our review included 98 eyes from 86 published cases diagnosed with ARPE. We scrutinized ARPE's clinical presentations, variability, and imaging characteristics, revealing that a large majority (90 %) of cases previously diagnosed as ARPE align more closely with other retinal disorders based on modern diagnostic criteria and imaging techniques. Only a small fraction (5 eyes) did not fit into any known categories, casting doubt on ARPE's distinct existence. This underscores the critical role of multimodal imaging in redefining our understanding of macular diseases and challenges the historical classification of ARPE as a unique clinical entity.

The reddish-orange color of Antarctic krill oil fades during storage, and the mechanism remains unclear. Model systems containing different combinations of astaxanthin (ASTA), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), and tocopherol were subjected to accelerated storage. Among all groups containing ASTA, only the ones with added PE showed significant fading. Meanwhile, the specific UV-visible absorption (A470 and A495) showed a similar trend. Peroxide value and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances increased during storage, while ASTA and PE contents decreased. Correlation analysis suggested that oxidized PE promoted fading by accelerating the transformation of ASTA. PE content exceeded the critical micelle concentration (1µg/g) indicating the formation of reverse micelles. Molecular docking analysis indicated that PE also interacted with ASTA in an anchor-like manner. Therefore, it is speculated that amphiphilic ASTA is more readily distributed at the oil-water interface of reverse micelles and captured by oxidized PE, which facilitates oxidation transfer, leading to ASTA oxidation and color fading.

In recent times, video inpainting techniques have intended to fill the missing areas or gaps in a video by utilizing known pixels. The variety in brightness or difference of the patches causes the state-of-the-art video inpainting techniques to exhibit high computation complexity and create seams in the target areas. To resolve these issues, this paper introduces a novel video inpainting technique that employs the Morphological Haar Wavelet Transform combined with the Krill Herd based Criminisi algorithm (MHWT-KHCA) to address the challenges of high computational demand and visible seam artifacts in current inpainting practices. The proposed MHWT-KHCA algorithm strategically reduces computation times and enhances the seamlessness of the inpainting process in videos. Through a series of experiments, the technique is validated against standard metrics such as peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity index (SSIM), where it demonstrates superior performance compared to existing methods. Additionally, the paper outlines potential real-world applications ranging from video restoration to real-time surveillance enhancement, highlighting the technique's versatility and effectiveness. Future research directions include optimizing the algorithm for diverse video formats and integrating machine learning models to advance its capabilities further.

The aim of the present study was to explore changes in the profile of volatile compounds (VCs) in canned Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) at different processing stages using partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-IMS). A total of 43 VCs were detected using GC-IMS in all krill meat samples, which included mainly alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, and furans. Considering the different processing stages, the highest variation in VCs and the highest VC content were observed in krill meat which underwent both blanching and salt addition. PLS-DA further revealed flavor differences in canned Antarctic krill meat at different processing stages, with octanal, 2-hexanol, 2-octane, 2,3,5-trimethyl pyrazine, and cis-3-hexanol as the main contributors to observed differences in VC profiles. These findings contribute to the production of high-quality canned krill meat, enhancing its flavor quality and providing a feasible theoretical basis for future krill meat pretreatment and industry development.

Renewable microgrids enhance security, reliability, and power quality in power systems by integrating solar and wind sources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This paper proposes a machine learning approach, leveraging Gaussian Process (GP) and Krill Herd Algorithm (KHA), for energy management in renewable microgrids with a reconfigurable structure based on remote switching of tie and sectionalizing. The method utilizes Gaussian Process (GP) for modeling hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) charging demand. To counteract HEV charging effects, two scenarios are explored: coordinated and intelligent charging. A novel optimization method inspired by the Krill Herd Algorithm (KHA) is introduced for the complex problem, along with a self-adaptive modification to tailor solutions to specific situations. Simulation on an IEEE microgrid demonstrates efficiency in both scenarios. The predictive model yields a remarkably low Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 1.02381 for total HEV charging demand. Results also reveal a reduction in microgrid operation cost in the intelligent charging scenario compared to coordinated charging.

To achieve a krill meal of high quality, a two-stage drying involving hot-air drying and vacuum drying was investigated. Five experimental groups were established according to the different drying conditions in the second stage, including 95 °C and 101 kPa, 95 °C and 60 kPa, 75 °C and 101 kPa, 75 °C and 60 kPa, and 75 °C and 20 kPa. The results showed that reducing the drying temperature and vacuum pressure in the second stage had a significant impact on the drying characteristics, sensory quality, and bioactive compounds of krill meal. Among all five groups, the drying condition of 75 °C and 60 kPa maintained a high drying rate while preserving a phospholipid content of 30.01 mg/kg and an astaxanthin content of 37.41 mg/kg. It also effectively reduced the isomerization of astaxanthin and the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids. These results suggested that the two-stage drying method may contribute to the production of high-quality krill meal.

We investigated the recent spatial variation in the mesozooplankton community on the broad shelf of the RSR MPA during the bloom season. The mesozooplankton community was geographically divided into three regions: the Terra Nova Bay polynya, the Ross Sea polynya, and the marginal polynya. Larval euphausiids were dominant in the two polynya regions, whereas copepods were predominant in the marginal polynya region. Salinity, sea ice, and dissolved oxygen related to the different water mass compositions were the most significant factors distinguishing the mesozooplankton community. The key environmental variable separating the three groups was salinity. In accordance with the relatively high mesozooplankton abundance in the polynya regions, the occurrence and size of the polynyas in the December Ross Sea are thought to affect the spatial distribution of mesozooplankton. Consequently, this study indicates that two polynyas in the Ross Sea are vital habitats for krill during summer. Our observation results provide fundamental information for evaluating marine ecosystems and establishing a management plan for the RSR MPA.

Antarctic krill shell waste (AKSW), a byproduct of Antarctic krill processing, has substantial quantity but low utilization. Utilizing microbial-based cell factories, with Pseudomonas putida as a promising candidate, offers an ecofriendly and sustainable approach to producing valuable bioproducts from renewable sources. However, the high fluoride content in AKSW impedes the cell growth of P. putida. This study aims to investigate the transcriptional response of P. putida to fluoride stress from AKSW and subsequently conduct genetic modification of the strain based on insights gained from transcriptomic analysis. Notably, the engineered strain KT+16840+03100 exhibited a remarkable 33.7-fold increase in cell growth, capable of fermenting AKSW for medium-chain-length-polyhydroxyalkanoates (mcl-PHA) biosynthesis, achieving a 40.3-fold increase in mcl-PHA yield compared to the control strain. This research advances our understanding of how P. putida responds to fluoride stress from AKSW and provides engineered strains that serve as excellent platforms for producing mcl-PHA through AKSW.

Food-grade biopolymer-based complexes are of particular interest in the field of biologic ingredient delivery owing to unique controlled-release properties. Herein, three calcium-loaded complexes using Antarctic krill protein (P) and pectin (HMP) with different blending sequences were designed, named P + Ca + HMP, P + HMP + Ca and HMP + Ca + P, respectively. The calcium-loaded capacity, structural properties, and in vitro gastrointestinal calcium release of the complexes were investigated. The results demonstrated that the calcium binding rate and content of the P + Ca + HMP complex were the highest, reaching to 90.3 % and 39.0 mg/g, respectively. Particularly, the P + Ca + HMP complex exhibited a more stable fruit tree-like structure. Furthermore, the structural analysis confirmed that the primary interaction forces involved hydrogen bond, electrostatic, hydrophobic and ionic bond interaction. Ultimately, the P + Ca + HMP complex demonstrated superior calcium delivery. In conclusion, a novel calcium delivery system was successfully developed based on optimized the self-assembly sequence, which held significant importance in promoting the high-value utilization of Antarctic krill protein and enhancing the in vitro bioaccessibility of calcium.

Social information is predicted to enhance the quality of animals' migratory decisions in dynamic ecosystems, but the relative benefits of social information in the long-range movements of marine megafauna are unknown. In particular, whether and how migrants use nonlocal information gained through social communication at the large spatial scale of oceanic ecosystems remains unclear. Here we test hypotheses about the cues underlying timing of blue whales' breeding migration in the Northeast Pacific via individual-based models parameterized by empirical behavioral data. Comparing emergent patterns from individual-based models to individual and population-level empirical metrics of migration timing, we find that individual whales likely rely on both personal and social sources of information about forage availability in deciding when to depart from their vast and dynamic foraging habitat and initiate breeding migration. Empirical patterns of migratory phenology can only be reproduced by models in which individuals use long-distance social information about conspecifics' behavioral state, which is known to be encoded in the patterning of their widely propagating songs. Further, social communication improves pre-migration seasonal foraging performance by over 60% relative to asocial movement mechanisms. Our results suggest that long-range communication enhances the perceptual ranges of migrating whales beyond that of any individual, resulting in increased foraging performance and more collective migration timing. These findings indicate the value of nonlocal social information in an oceanic migrant and suggest the importance of long-distance acoustic communication in the collective migration of wide-ranging marine megafauna.

This study aimed to determine the effect of different frozen temperatures during storage on the quality of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) and assess the change at the metabolite level via a combination of physicochemical property analysis, liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS) based non-targeted metabolomics profiling. Regarding samples stored at -20 °C, the expressions of 7055 metabolites were elevated, while 2313 were downregulated. Lipids and lipid molecules had the highest proportion of differential metabolites. A total of 432 discriminatory metabolites with Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) IDs was obtained. We also observed that the concentrations of differential bitter free amino acids (FAAs) and oxidation products of arachidonic and linoleic acid increased. Moreover, as the storage temperature increased, the freshness, umami, and sweetness components were considerably reduced. Furthermore, results indicated that the color, pH and water-holding capacity (WHC) were potential indicators of quality deterioration, while inosinic acid was a probable biomarker for umami degradation of frozen Antarctic krill. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that storage at lower temperatures can be beneficial for maintaining the freshness of Antarctic krill from macro and micro perspectives.

Southern hemisphere humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae, SHHW) breeding populations follow a high-fidelity Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) diet while feeding in distinct sectors of the Southern Ocean. Their capital breeding life history requires predictable ecosystem productivity to fuel migration and migration-related behaviours. It is therefore postulated that populations feeding in areas subject to the strongest climate change impacts are more likely to show the first signs of a departure from a high-fidelity krill diet. We tested this hypothesis by investigating blubber fatty acid profiles and skin stable isotopes obtained from five SHHW populations in 2019, and comparing them to Antarctic krill stable isotopes sampled in three SHHW feeding areas in the Southern Ocean in 2019. Fatty acid profiles and δ13C and δ15N varied significantly among all five populations, however, calculated trophic positions did not (2.7 to 3.1). Similarly, fatty acid ratios, 16:1ω7c/16:0 and 20:5ω3/22:6ω3 were above 1, showing that whales from all five populations are secondary heterotrophs following an omnivorous diet with a diatom-origin. Thus, evidence for a potential departure from a high-fidelity Antarctic krill diet was not seen in any population. δ13C of all populations were similar to δ13C of krill sampled in productive upwelling areas or the marginal sea-ice zone. Consistency in trophic position and diet origin but significant fatty acid and stable isotope differences demonstrate that the observed variability arises at lower trophic levels. Our results indicate that, at present, there is no evidence of a divergence from a high-fidelity krill diet. Nevertheless, the characteristic isotopic signal of whales feeding in productive upwelling areas, or in the marginal sea-ice zone, implies that future cryosphere reductions could impact their feeding ecology.

Excipient selection is crucial to address the oxidation and solubility challenges of bioactive substances, impacting their safety and efficacy. AKPL, a novel ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) esterified phospholipid derived from Antarctic krill, demonstrates unique antioxidant capabilities and synergistic effects. It exhibits pronounced surface activity and electronegativity at physiological pH, as evidenced by a critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 0.15 g/L and ζ-potential of -49.9 mV. In aqueous environments, AKPL self-assembles into liposomal structures, offering high biocompatibility and promoting cell proliferation. Its polyunsaturated bond-rich structure provides additional oxidation sites, imparting antioxidant properties superior to other phospholipids like DSPC and DOPC. Additionally, AKPL augments the efficacy of lipophilic antioxidants, such as alpha-tocopherol and curcumin, in aqueous media through both intermolecular and intramolecular interactions. In sum, AKPL emerges as an innovative unsaturated phospholipid, offering new strategies for encapsulating and delivering oxygen-sensitive agents.

Krill oil is extracted from krill, a small crustacean in the Antarctic Ocean. It has received growing attention because of krill oil's unique properties and diverse health benefits. Recent experimental and clinical studies suggest that it has potential therapeutic benefits in preventing the development of a range of chronic conditions, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Krill oil is enriched with long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic acids, and the potent antioxidant astaxanthin, contributing to its therapeutic properties. The possible underlying mechanisms of krill oil's health benefits include anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions, maintaining intestinal barrier functions, and modulating gut microbiota. This review aims to provide an overview of the beneficial effects of krill oil and its bioactive components on intestinal inflammation and to discuss the findings on the molecular mechanisms associated with the role of krill oil in IBD prevention and treatment.

AIMS: To develop Antarctic krill oil emulsions with casein and whey protein concentrate (WPC) and study their physicochemical properties and storage stability. METHODS: Emulsions were prepared by homogenisation and ultrasonication. The properties of the emulsions were investigated via ultraviolet ray spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, confocal laser scanning microscope, sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, Fourier transform infra-red spectrometer, and fluorescence spectrum. Shelf life was predicted by the Arrhenius model. RESULTS: Casein- and WPC-krill oil emulsions were well formed; the mean particle diameters were less than 128.19 ± 0.64 nm and 158 ± 1.56 nm, the polymer dispersity indices were less than 0.26 ± 0.01 and 0.27 ± 0.01, and the zeta potential were around -46.88 ± 5.02 mV and -33.51 ± 2.68 mV, respectively. Shelf life was predicted to be 32.67 ± 1.55 days and 29.62 ± 0.65 days (40 °C), 27.69 ± 1.15 days and 23.58 ± 0.14 days (50 °C), 24.02 ± 0.15 days and 20.1 ± 0.08 days (60 °C). CONCLUSION: The prepared krill oil emulsions have great potential to become a new krill oil supplement.

Aging and stress have contributed to the development of memory disorders. Phe-Pro-Phe (FPF) was identified with high stability by mass spectrometry from simulated gastrointestinal digestion and everted gut sac products of the Antarctic krill peptide Ser-Ser-Asp-Ala-Phe-Phe-Pro-Phe-Arg (SSDAFFPFR) which was found to have a positive impact on memory enhancement. This study investigated the digestive stability, absorption, and memory-enhancing effects of FPF using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, simulated gastrointestinal digestion, in vivo fluorescence distribution analysis, mouse behavioral experiments, acetylcholine function, Nissl staining, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemistry. FPF crossed the blood-brain barrier into the brain after digestion, significantly reduced shock time, working memory errors, and reference memory errors, and increased the recognition index. Additionally, FPF elevated ACh content; Nissl body counts; and CREB, SYN, and PSD-95 expression levels, while reducing AChE activity (P < 0.05). This implies that FPF prevents scopolamine-induced memory impairment and provides a basis for future research on memory disorders.

The mitogenome of Euphausia crystallorophias collected from the Ross Sea Region Marine Protected Area (RSR MPA) is described for the first time. The assembled mitogenome was 17,291 bp in length and consisted of two ribosomal RNAs (rRNAs), 22 transfer RNAs (tRNAs), 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), and noncoding regions, all of which were identical to those of other euphausiid species. The most common start codon for the 13 PCGs was ATG, and the most common termination codon was TAA. The overall G + C content was 33.2% in the heavy strand. Euphausia crystallorophias was sister to E. superba in the phylogenetic analysis. The mitogenome of E. crystallorophias provided significant DNA molecular data for further identification and phylogenetic analysis within the euphausiids.

This study investigates the use of untapped mesopelagic species as a source of long-chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids (LC n-3 PUFAs) to meet the growing demand. The challenges faced by commercial fishing vessels, such as varying catch rates and species distribution affecting lipid levels, are addressed. Marine oils were produced post-catch using thermal separation and enzymatic hydrolysis during four commercial cruises, screening approximately 20,000 kg of mixed mesopelagic species. Maurolicus muelleri and Benthosema glaciale were the dominant species in the catch, while krill was the primary bycatch. The lipid composition varied, with B. glaciale having a higher prevalence of wax esters, while triacylglycerols and phospholipids were more predominant in the other species. LC n-3 PUFAs ranged from 19% to 44% of lipids, with an average EPA + DHA content of 202 mg/g of oil. Both processing methods achieved oil recoveries of over 90%. Estimates indicate that the mesopelagic biomass in the Northeast Atlantic could supply annual recommended levels of EPA + DHA to 1.5 million people, promoting healthy heart and brain functions. These findings offer valuable insights for considering mesopelagic species as a potential source of dietary marine lipids, laying the groundwork for further research and innovation in processing and obtaining valuable compounds from such species.

Memory impairment is a serious problem with organismal aging and increased social pressure. The tetrapeptide Ala-Phe-Phe-Pro (AFFP) is a synthetic analogue of Antarctic krill derived from the memory-improving Antarctic krill peptide Ser-Ser-Asp-Ala-Phe-Phe-Pro-Phe-Arg (SSDAFFPFR) after digestion and absorption. The objective of this research was to assess the neuroprotective effects of AFFP by reducing oxidative stress and controlling lipid metabolism in the brains of mice with memory impairment caused by scopolamine. The 1H Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy results showed that AFFP had three active hydrogen sites that could contribute to its antioxidant properties. The findings from in vivo tests demonstrated that AFFP greatly enhanced the mice's behavioral performance in the passive avoidance, novel object recognition, and eight-arm maze experiments. AFFP reduced oxidative stress by enhancing superoxide dismutase activity and malondialdehyde levels in mice serum, thereby decreasing reactive oxygen species level in the mice hippocampus. In addition, AFFP increased the unsaturated lipid content to balance the unsaturated lipid level against the neurotoxicity of the mice hippocampus. Our findings suggest that AFFP emerges as a potential dietary intervention for the prevention of memory impairment disorders.

Antarctic krill tropomyosin (AkTM) has been shown in mice to cause IgE-mediated food allergy. The objective of this work was to investigate the role of Notch signaling in AkTM-sensitized mice, as well as to determine the changes in gut microbiota composition and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the allergic mice. An AkTM-induced food allergy mouse model was built and N-[N-(3,5-difluorophenacetyl)-L-alanyl]-S-phenylglycine t-butyl ester (DAPT) was used as an γ-secretase inhibitor to inhibit the activation of Notch signaling. Food allergy indices, some key transcription factors, histologic alterations in the small intestine, and changes in gut microbiota composition were examined. The results showed that DAPT inhibited Notch signaling, which reduced AkTM-specific IgE, suppressed mast cell degranulation, decreased IL-4 but increased IFN-γ production, and alleviated allergic symptoms. Quantitative real-time PCR and Western blotting analyses revealed that expressions of Hes-1, Gata3, and IL-4 were down-regulated after DAPT treatment, accompanied by increases in T-bet and IFN-γ, indicating that Notch signaling was active in AkTM-sensitized mice and blocking it could reverse the Th1/Th2 imbalance. Expressions of key transcription factors revealed that Notch signaling could promote Th2 cell differentiation in sensitized mice. Furthermore, 16S rRNA sequencing results revealed that AkTM could alter the diversity and composition of gut microbiota in mice, leading to increases in inflammation-inducing bacteria such as Enterococcus and Escherichia-Shigella. Correlation analysis indicated that reduced SCFA concentrations in AkTM-allergic mice may be related to decreases in certain SCFA-producing bacteria, such as Clostridia_UCG-014. The changes in gut microbiota and SCFAs could be partially restored by DAPT treatment. Our findings showed that inhibiting Notch signaling could alleviate AkTM-induced food allergy by correcting Th1/Th2 imbalance and modulating the gut microbiota.
