Pharmacokinetics studies have investigated meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, dosing strategies in a wide variety of non-domestic animals; however, there is no prior study examining well-founded dosing for pinnipeds. To develop dosing protocols, pharmacokinetic information is needed, with an examination of differences between pinniped species. Apparently, healthy California sea lions (Zalophus californianus: CSL; n = 13) and Pacific harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardii: PHS; n = 17) that had completed rehabilitation were enrolled into a population-based pharmacokinetic study. Each animal was administered a single oral dose of meloxicam at 0.1 mg/kg, and two blood samples were collected from each animal at varying intervals during a 96-h study period. Plasma concentrations of meloxicam were determined by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Data were analyzed with nonlinear mixed effects modeling (Phoenix® NLME™, Certara, St. Louis, MO 63105, USA). The results indicated that in PHS, peak plasma concentration (Cmax) was 0.33 µg/mL with an elimination half-life (Ke t½) of 31.53 h. In CSL, Cmax was 0.17 µg/mL with Ke t½ of 32.71 h. All animals enrolled completed the study without outward adverse clinical signs. The elimination half-life was longer than previously recommended dosing intervals for pinnipeds; however, we cannot speculate in the optimum clinical dose from these results.

Pests are a significant challenge in paddy cultivation, resulting in a global loss of approximately 20 % of rice yield. Early detection of paddy insects can help to save these potential losses. Several ways have been suggested for identifying and categorizing insects in paddy fields, employing a range of advanced, noninvasive, and portable technologies. However, none of these systems have successfully incorporated feature optimization techniques with Deep Learning and Machine Learning. Hence, the current research provided a framework utilizing these techniques to detect and categorize images of paddy insects promptly. Initially, the suggested research will gather the image dataset and categorize it into two groups: one without paddy insects and the other with paddy insects. Furthermore, various pre-processing techniques, such as augmentation and image filtering, will be applied to enhance the quality of the dataset and eliminate any unwanted noise. To determine and analyze the deep characteristics of an image, the suggested architecture will incorporate 5 pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network models. Following that, feature selection techniques, including Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE), Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA), and an optimization algorithm called Lion Optimization, were utilized in order to further reduce the redundant number of features that were collected for the study. Subsequently, the process of identifying the paddy insects will be carried out by employing 7 ML algorithms. Finally, a set of experimental data analysis has been conducted to achieve the objectives, and the proposed approach demonstrates that the extracted feature vectors of ResNet50 with Logistic Regression and PCA have achieved the highest accuracy, precisely 99.28 %. However, the present idea will significantly impact how paddy insects are diagnosed in the field.

Many-objective optimization (MaO) is an important aspect of engineering scenarios. In many-objective optimization algorithms (MaOAs), a key challenge is to strike a balance between diversity and convergence. MaOAs employs various tactics to either enhance selection pressure for better convergence and/or implements additional measures for sustaining diversity. With increase in number of objectives, the process becomes more complex, mainly due to challenges in achieving convergence during population selection. This paper introduces a novel Many-Objective Ant Lion Optimizer (MaOALO), featuring the widely-popular ant lion optimizer algorithm. This method utilizes reference point, niche preserve and information feedback mechanism (IFM), to enhance the convergence and diversity of the population. Extensive experimental tests on five real-world (RWMaOP1- RWMaOP5) optimization problems and standard problem classes, including MaF1-MaF15 (for 5, 9 and 15 objectives), DTLZ1-DTLZ7 (for 8 objectives) has been carried out. It is shown that MaOALO is superior compared to ARMOEA, NSGA-III, MaOTLBO, RVEA, MaOABC-TA, DSAE, RL-RVEA and MaOEA-IH algorithms in terms of GD, IGD, SP, SD, HV and RT metrics. Hericium erinaceus has long been favored for its remarkable nutritional and health-promoting benefits, and erinacine A is the key component responsible for the neuroprotective properties of H. erinaceus. Establishing an efficient method for separating erinacine A from H. erinaceus and screening the erinacine A-enriched strains is crucial to maximizing its benefits. Herein, we first reported that high-speed counter current chromatography (HSCCC) is an effective method for separating high-purity erinacine A. Using a two-phase solvent system composed of n-hexane/ethyl acetate/methanol/water (4.5:5:4.5:5, v/v/v/v), erinacine A with a purity of over 95% was separated. Then, we evaluated the content and yield of erinacine A in the liquid-fermented mycelia of Hericium germplasms. Both the content and yield of erinacine A varied greatly among the surveyed strains. The significant effect of the strain on the erinacine A content and yield was revealed by an analysis of variance. The highest erinacine A content and yield were observed in the mycelia of a wild strain HeG, reaching 42.16 mg/g and 358.78 mg/L, which is superior to the current highest outcomes achieved using submerged cultivation. The isolation method established and the strains screened in this study can be beneficial for the scaling up of erinacine A extraction and nutraceutical development to industrial levels.

Steller sea lions (SSL) are sentinels for monitoring environmental contaminants in remote areas of the Aleutian Islands, Alaska. Therefore, concentrations of several organochlorines (OCs) were measured in blood from 123 SSL pups sampled from 3 regions; the western Aleutian Islands (WAI), central Aleutian Islands (CAI), and the central Gulf of Alaska. Blood, blubber, and milk from 12 adult female SSL from WAI, CAI and southeast Alaska also were analyzed. Findings included the following. SSL pups had higher concentrations of some OCs and mercury (Hg) on rookeries in the WAI than those more easterly. Pups had significantly higher blood concentrations of many OC classes than adult females sampled within the same region; some pups had PCB concentrations exceeding thresholds of concern (∑PCBs >8600 ng/g lw). ∑PCB concentration in pup whole blood was positively correlated with the trophic marker, δ15N within the regions sampled, along with two PCB congeners (PCB138 and PCB153). This suggests that the dams of pups with higher ∑PCBs, PCB138, and PCB153 concentrations were feeding on more predatory prey. Adult female blubber ∑DDT and hexachlorocyclohexane concentrations were also positively correlated with δ15N values. Several pups (mostly from WAI) had blood Hg concentrations and/or blood PCB concentrations (surrogate for overall OC exposures) of concern. The finding that WAI SSL pups have been exposed to multiple contaminants calls for future investigation of their cumulative exposure to a mixture of contaminants especially their transplacental and then transmammary exposure routes.

IMPORTANCE: Canine extraction of large carnivores can pose significant risk due to extensive tissue damage during aggressive bone reduction. This report highlights a rare instance in which the use of a piezoelectric surgical unit (PSU) for maxillary canine extraction in a large carnivore resulted in successful outcomes with minimal tissue damage. CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old male African lion presented with decreased appetite because of bilateral maxillary canine fractures. Intraoral radiographs revealed enlarged root canals and periapical radiolucency of the fractured canines, leading to a diagnosis of periapical periodontitis and pulpitis. To extract the right maxillary canine, conventional method using hand instrument failed to achieve adequate luxation, necessitating the use of the flat blade of the PSU to sever the periodontal ligament. The left maxillary canine was extracted using PSU from the beginning, and the extraction time was markedly shortened by using PSU without additional alveolar bone damage or bleeding. CONCLUSION AND RELEVANCE: This case demonstrated that utilizing PSU for canine extraction in a lion resulted in periodontal ligament separation, reducing damage to the alveolar bone and shortening surgical time. It suggests the promising application of PSU in tooth extraction for large wild animals, indicating its potential significance in veterinary dentistry.

Invasive species that outcompete endemic ones and toxic harmful algae that cause algal blooms threaten marine resources like fisheries, aquaculture, and even tourism. Environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding can help as a method for early alert. In this study, we have analyzed communities inhabiting six lagoons within the Gulf of Lion (northwest Mediterranean Sea) with spatial protection as RAMSAR and Natura 2000 sites. Employing the COI gene as the only metabarcode, we found 15 genera that have caused recognized algal bloom outbreaks in the studied lagoons since 2000. In addition, seven alien invasive species that can pose risks to the rich marine resources of the zone and lagoons were also found. The results found from eDNA are consistent with events of toxic algae blooms before and after the sampling moment and with reported occurrences of the invasive species in nearby Mediterranean areas. Multivariate multiple analysis showed the importance of anthropic pressure in the abundance of these nuisance species. Mitigation actions and routine eDNA metabarcoding in zones of special interest like these fragile French Mediterranean lagoons are recommended for early alert of nuisance species in order to plan timely management actions.

Laparoscopic ovariectomy under general anesthesia was planned in a 10-year-old, 146 kg, apparently healthy female African lion (Panthera leo). The lion was immobilized via intramuscular darts containing midazolam (0.033 mg/kg), medetomidine (50 µg/kg) and ketamine (2.5 mg/kg), and intubated using an endotracheal tube (16 mm internal diameter). The anesthesia was maintained using sevoflurane (0.9-2.1% end-tidal concentration), in combination with remifentanil (0.1 µg/kg/min) and ketamine (11 µg/kg/min) at a constant rate infusion (CRI), with Hartmann's solution (5 mL/kg/hr). Surgery was conducted with stable vital signs, but hypotension (mean arterial blood pressure 55 mmHg) developed, requiring dobutamine treatment. The hypotension was effectively controlled by adjusting dobutamine from 5 µg/kg/min to 0.2 to 0.3 µg/kg/min. This case suggests possibilities that dosages in this range can be clinically useful for peri-anesthetic hypotension in lions.

The golden lion tamarin (GLT) is an Endangered primate endemic to Brazil's lowland Atlantic Forest. After centuries of deforestation and capture for the pet trade, only a few hundred individuals survived, all in isolated forest fragments 85 km from Rio de Janeiro city. Intensive conservation actions, including reintroduction of zoo-born tamarins, increased numbers to about 3700 in 2014. The most severe yellow fever epidemic/epizootic in Brazil in 80 years reduced two of the largest GLT populations by over 90%. Herein we report the results of a 2023 survey of GLTs designed to examine the dynamics of population recovery following yellow fever. Results indicate that populations hard hit by yellow fever are recovering due in part to immigration from adjacent forest fragments. No local extirpations were observed. About 4800 GLTs live in the survey area. This represents a 31% increase since the baseline survey completed in 2014. Two factors explain most of the increase: four large areas that had no GLTs or very low-density populations in 2014 are now at moderate density (three areas) or low density (one area), explaining 71% of overall increase since 2014. Increase in forest area within our survey area may explain up to 16% of the increase in GLT numbers since 2014. Results of computer simulations suggest that strengthening forest connectivity will facilitate metapopulation resilience in the face of mortality factors such as yellow fever.

Mercury is a global contaminant that bioaccumulates in a tissue-specific manner in long-lived predators such as Steller sea lions (SSL). Bone is a well-preserved material amenable for studying millennial scale trends; however, little is known about the distribution and variability of total mercury concentrations ([THg]) within individual bones and among bone elements in SSL. We assessed SSL bone [THg] variability with respect to physiologic age, bone type, longitudinally within a bone, and among bone elements. Pup bones (mean ± SD; 31.4 ± 13.58 ppb) had greater [THg] than adults (7.9 ± 1.91 ppb). There were greater and more variable [THg] within individual long bones near epiphyses compared to mid-diaphysis. Pup spongy bone in ribs (62.7 ± 44.79 ppb) had greater [THg] than long bones (23.5 ± 8.83 ppb) and phalanges (19.6 ± 10.78 ppb). These differences are likely due to variability in bone composition, growth, and turnover rate. This study informs standardized sampling procedures for [THg] in bone to improve interpretations of mercury variability over time and space.

Reproductive success is an important aspect of marine mammals' population health, as it is an indicator of the trajectory for the population into the future. The aim of this study is to provide additional relevant data on fetus-maternal ultrasonographic monitoring in sea lion species, in order to evaluate possible fetal distress or abnormalities. From 2018 to 2023, serial ultrasonographic scans of two healthy California sea lion females (16 ± 4 years old), kept under human care, were performed over the course of two pregnancies for each female. Animals were monitored from the ovulation to the delivery. Ultrasonography was performed weekly, and, during the last month, daily images were recorded using Logiq Versana Active, General Electric, with a 2-5 MHz curvilinear transducer, and Logiq V2, General Electric, with a 2-5 MHz curvilinear transducer. Right and left lateral recumbencies have been used during the examination. To the author's knowledge, this is the first study describing in detail the sea lion organogenesis and their correlation with the stage of pregnancy.

The study of the immune function in marine mammals is essential to understand their physiology and can help to improve their welfare in the aquariums. Dedicating efforts to studying marine mammal physiology, pathophysiology, and implementing new diagnostic and therapeutic tools promote progress towards preventive medicine in aquariums by facilitating early detection and treatment of diseases. However, biological and clinical research on marine mammals is currently very limited due to difficult access to these species and their biological samples. With this objective, our group has adapted to marine mammals a commercially available assay routinely used to evaluate the phagocytic capacity of monocytes and granulocytes in human whole blood samples. We adapted IngoflowEx kit to bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas), walruses (Odobenus rosmarus), Patagonian sea lions (Otaria flavescens), and harbor (Phoca vitulina). In this paper, we report the modifications carried out on the original protocol for their correct functioning in marine mammals. We obtained physiological values of phagocytic capacity in each species after repeated sampling for 4 years in various individuals of each species. Specific results revealed that the % phagocytic cells that ingested E.coli in bottlenose dolphins were 59.6 ± 1.27, in walruses 62.6 ± 2.17, in sea lions 57.5 ± 4.3, and in beluga whales 61.7 ± 1.4. In the case of the % phagocytic cells producing respiratory burst in bottlenose dolphins were 34.2 ± 3.6, in walruses 36.3 ± 4.3, in sea lions 40.8 ± 10.2, and in beluga whales 26.3 ± 3.7. These preliminary results can be used as a reference to detect alterations in phagocytic capacity either by immunosuppression or by exacerbation of the response in infectious inflammatory processes. Clinical applicability of the assay was verified in two clinical cases in which Ingoflow was useful to detect immune alterations in two diseased individuals, before and after the onset of clinical signs.

Lions (Panthera leo) play a crucial ecological role in shaping and maintaining fragile ecosystems within Africa. Conservation efforts should focus on genetic variability within wild populations when considering reintroduction attempts. We studied two groups of lions from two conservation sites located in Zambia and Zimbabwe to determine their genetic make-up, information that is usually unknown to the sites. In this study, we analysed 17 specimens for cytb and seven microsatellite markers to ascertain family relationships and genetic diversity previously obtained by observational studies. We then produced a standardised haplogroup phylogeny using all available entire mitogenomes, as well as calculating a revised molecular clock. The modern lion lineage diverged ~151 kya and was divided into two subspecies, both containing three distinct haplogroups. We confirm that Panthera leo persica is not a subspecies, but rather a haplogroup of the northern P.l. leo that exited Africa at least ~31 kya. The progenitor to all lions existed ~1.2 Mya, possibly in SE Africa, and later exited Africa and split into the two cave lion lineages ~175 kya. Species demography is correlated to major climactic events. We now have a detailed phylogeny of lion evolution and an idea of their conservation status given the threat of climate change.

In human medicine, various pathologies, including decompression sickness, thrombocytopenia, and rheumatoid arthritis, have been linked to changes in cellular microparticles (MP) formation, particularly platelet microparticles (PMP). Similar disorders in marine mammals might be attributed to anthropogenic threats or illnesses, potentially impacting blood PMP levels. Thus, detecting platelet phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure and PMP formation could serve as a crucial diagnostic and monitoring approach for these conditions in marine mammals. Our group has developed a methodology to assess real-time PS exposure and PMP formation specifically tailored for marine mammals. This method, pioneered in species such as bottlenose dolphins, beluga whales, walruses, and California sea lions, represents a novel approach with significant implications for both clinical assessment and further research into platelet function in these animals. The adapted methodology for evaluating PS exposure and PMP formation in marine mammals has yielded promising results. By applying this approach, we have observed significant correlations between alterations in PMP levels and specific pathologies or environmental factors. These findings underscore the potential of platelet function assessment as a diagnostic and monitoring tool in marine mammal health. The successful adaptation and application of this methodology in marine mammals highlight its utility for understanding and managing health concerns in these animals.

There is limited published data regarding cardiovascular disease in nondomestic felid populations. To address this knowledge gap, necropsy cases of tigers and lions with representative myocardial samples submitted to a diagnostic laboratory were histologically assessed with hematoxylin and eosin and Sirius red stains. A total of 32 submissions (15 tigers, 17 lions) were identified in a 4-year period. All tigers and lions had some degree of coronary artery lesions in the left ventricle and/or interventricular septum. Major findings included moderate to marked arteriosclerosis in 8 tigers (53%) and 4 lions (24%) and moderate to marked perivascular fibrosis in 10 tigers (67%) and 9 lions (53%). Moreover, 10 tigers (67%) and 8 lions (47%) had coronary artery lesions with variable degrees of perivascular cardiomyocyte degeneration and/or loss. To our knowledge, this is the first report describing coronary artery pathology in captive tigers and lions.

The most fatal disease affecting women worldwide now is breast cancer. Early detection of breast cancer enhances the likelihood of a full recovery and lowers mortality. Based on medical imaging, researchers from all around the world are developing breast cancer screening technologies. Due to their rapid progress, deep learning algorithms have caught the interest of many in the field of medical imaging. This research proposes a novel method in mammogram image feature extraction with classification and optimization using machine learning in breast cancer detection. The input image has been processed for noise removal, smoothening, and normalization. The input image features were extracted using probabilistic principal component analysis for detecting the presence of tumors in mammogram images. The extracted tumor region is classified using the Naïve Bayes classifier and transfer integrated convolution neural networks. The classified output has been optimized using firefly binary grey optimization and metaheuristic moth flame lion optimization. The experimental analysis has been carried out in terms of different parameters based on datasets. The proposed framework used an ensemble model for breast cancer that made use of the proposed Bayes + FBGO and TCNN + MMFLO classifier and optimizer for diverse mammography image datasets. The INbreast dataset was evaluated using the proposed Bayes + FBGO and TCNN + MMFLO classifiers, which achieved 95% and 98% accuracy, respectively.

BACKGROUND: Feline pulmonary Langerhans cells histiocytosis (PLCH) is a rare disorder that results in progressive respiratory failure secondary to pulmonary parenchymal infiltration with Langerhans cells (LCs). A diagnosis of PLCH is proposed based on the clinical features and pathological findings and confirmed based on the infiltrating histiocytic cells. There are few documented cases of feline PLCH, and this case report of PLCH in an African Lion could present new information and aspects of this feline histiocytic disease. CASE PRESENTATION: An African lion at Hohhot Zoo showing severe hyporexia and dyspnea with subsequent mental depression and emaciation died of exhaustion after a 35-day course of illness. Empirical treatment did not have a significant effect. An autopsy revealed that the lungs were enlarged and hardened due to infiltrative lesions, with many yellowish-white foci in all the lobes and sections. Furthermore, the kidneys were atrophied and had scattered grayish-white lesions on the surface. At the same time, congestion was widely distributed in various locations, including the liver, subcutaneous loose connective tissues, serosal surface and other tissues and organs. Histologically, proliferative histiocytic cells (PHCs) were scattered in the alveolar cavities, bronchioles and submucosa of bronchioles, with evident cellular and nuclear pleomorphism, and thus the alveolar septa were obliterated. The histopathological changes in other organs included chronic sclerosing glomerulonephritis, proliferated Kupffer cells in the liver, adrenal edema and interstitial connective tissue hyperplasia, as well as atrophy of the small intestines and spleen. Furthermore, immunohistochemical analysis results were strongly positive for CD1a, vimentin, S100 and E-cadherin in the membrane or cytoplasm of PHCs, supporting an LC phenotype. CONCLUSIONS: Here, we present a rare pulmonary Langerhans cell histiocytosis case in an African lion.

Cognitive enrichment is becoming more prevalent in professional marine mammal facilities. Research with dolphins has suggested that such enrichment provides more welfare benefits than enrichment that does not incorporate cognitive challenge. However, there is little research supporting the use of cognitive enrichment as a means to improve the welfare of sea lions. Recently, a novel form of technological cognitive enrichment, the Enclosure Video Enrichment (EVE) system, was introduced to a population of California sea lions at the US Navy's Marine Mammal Program as a means to enhance welfare. Two of the initial focal animals introduced to EVE were selected based on their health history and the possible benefits of cognitive enrichment in improving health measures. To evaluate this, information regarding the animals' consumption of their offered diet was compared to other animals in the population of similar age and the absence of a similar health history. Subsequently, the total diet consumption of the targeted animals was evaluated in the two years prior to the introduction to EVE and compared to the total diet consumption during the initial 2 years of regular EVE sessions. There was a significant decrease in the number of days in which the sea lions did not consume their entire offered diet in the two years after implementing regular EVE sessions, an increase in participation and performance of voluntary husbandry behaviors, and a reduction in the number of days animals were clinically ill. This study provides evidence of cognitive enrichment as a management tool to improve animal health and welfare as well as performance in training sessions.

Brugia malayi and B. pahangi, potential zoonotic pathogens transmitted by mosquitoes, are believed to primarily infect dogs and cats as reservoir hosts. Although previous studies have indicated nematode infections in lions, particularly in zoo environments where human contact with these reservoirs is possible, limited documentation exists regarding Brugia sp. infections in lions in Thailand. This study aims to investigate a case of Brugia infection in a lion from a zoo in Thailand. The blood sample was collected and examined from a female lion, using staining methods to morphologically identify microfilaria at the genus level. Subsequently, the PCR was employed targeting specific genes, including mitochondrial 12S rDNA, 18S rDNA, cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and Wolbachia surface protein (wsp), to confirm the species of the filarial nematode parasite. The genetic sequencing results revealed a high similarity (99-100%) to B. malayi for the 12S rDNA, 18S rDNA, COI and wsp genes. Phylogenetic analysis based on nucleotide sequences from the 12S rDNA, 18S rDNA, COI and wsp genes showed that the sequences from this study belong to different clusters. This marks the inaugural documentation of molecular identification of Brugia infection in a lion, signifying that lions could function as reservoirs for this parasite and present a potential public health risk in the region. Our research underscores the effectiveness of molecular techniques and phylogenetic analysis in discerning and comprehending the evolution of filarial parasites. Additionally, it emphasizes the significance of these methods in enhancing the diagnosis, control, and prevention of zoonotic filarial nematode infections.

Tracking PFAS in ecosystems is challenging. In this context, monitoring programs are crucial to fill data gaps, especially in marine environments, which are the ultimate outlets for these forever chemicals. The 2021 chemical contamination monitoring campaign along the French Mediterranean coast established a baseline for PFAS concentrations in mussels, with 90 % of measurements below quantification limits. When detected, long-chain PFCA's were predominant. Spatial distribution patterns suggested continuous PFAS inputs and complex dynamics, shaped by the influence of large watersheds and rivers (Rhône, Aude, Huveaune). Lapeyrade shallow lagoon stood out as the most contaminated site. Similar PFAS profiles in connected sites implied shared sources but raised questions about accumulation processes in mussels. While certain sites had evident sources (e.g., military airbase for Palo lagoon), others remained uncertain (e.g., Toulon bay). Coastal stations (Banyuls, Cap Agde, Brégançon, Pampelonne) showed PFAS contamination without clear onshore sources, possibly due to insufficient transportation process understanding.
